that it was the DoJ that would have to determine the next steps based on the recommendation.
"Yes, I am aware of that. Well, the DoJ has to make that assessment. that's the process," the president told reporters when asked about the house panel's recommendation.
marcos stressed the need for a thorough assessment before any legal actions could be pursued.
"they need to thoroughly assess the findings to determine which cases to file and to see if the quadcomm recommendations are appropriate," he said. u PAGE A2
"When they do an oversight hearing, they have findings, and they will forward their findings to the DoJ with their own recommendations," marcos said. the president said the DoJ would then analyze these findings to determine if there is sufficient ground to file cases against Duterte and his allies, what specific charges could be applicable, and how to construct a legal case.
Pope praises Pinoys for their faith
mANILA — Pope francis has praised filipinos for their faith, describing the work of some of them working in the Vatican as “fantastic” because of “the faith they have and the witness they give.” the filipinos are men of faith, women of faith,” the pontiff said in his address to the local migrant community in spain last Dec. 16, the eve of his 88th birthday.
he instructed the filipinos to “continue to bear witness in this society that has become too rich, too competent, too self-sufficient. thank you for what you do.” the pope also expressed his fondness for the tagalog word “tahanan” because it
signified that the church can be someone’s home wherever they may be.
“You chose to call your mission in madrid ‘Tahanan’ – a beautiful word that we can translate as ‘home.’ And it is true, everywhere we go, the Church is always a home for us, a warm and welcoming home, and today the house of Peter is also like a home for you,” he added.
In madrid, many filipino migrants who experience difficulties and misunderstandings turn to their headquarters, the Parish of Nuestra señora del espino.

mANILA — Law-abiding filipinos in the United states are not the target of President-elect Donald trump’s mass deportation policy, an official of the Department of foreign Affairs (DfA) said on monday, December 16.
DfA Undersecretary eduardo Jose de Vega said the incoming trump administration plans to deport illegal immigrants involved in criminal activity or those who are not contributing to the U.s. economy.

mANILA — President ferdinand marcos Jr. is leaving it up to legal experts to determine if mary Jane Veloso – the filipina worker who returned to the Philippines last Wednesday, December 18 after being on death row in Indonesia for 14 years for drug trafficking – can be given clemency.
In a media interview at the Villamor Air Base on thursday, December 19, marcos said the prospect of clemency for Veloso is still at a “very preliminary stage.”
“We are still far from that. We still have to have a look at what (her status really) is. And then of course, we’re aware of the request for clemency from her representative and of course her family,” the president said.
“We will leave it to the legal judgment, the judgment of our legal experts to determine whether the provision of clemency is appropriate... Indonesia did not set conditions so it’s really up to us,” he added.

Marcos: DOJ to study cases vs...
During his sponsorship speech at the house session on Wednesday, December 18, quad committee chairman and surigao del Norte rep. robert
Ace Barbers said the four panels recommended charges against Duterte and senators ronald dela rosa and Bong Go for violating republic Act 9851, or the Philippine Act on Crimes Against International humanitarian Law, Genocide, and other Crimes Against humanity.
Barbers said Duterte himself admitted that key elements of his administration's drug war, including the existence of the so-called Davao Death squad and the Davao template of a reward system for police officers involved in extrajudicial killings (eJKs).
he added that Duterte assumed "full legal responsibility" for the deadly war against illegal drugs. other personalities tagged in the quad committee's partial report were former Philippine National Police chiefs oscar Albayalde and Debold sinas; retired police colonels royina Garma and edilberto Leonardo; and former malacañang aide Irmina espino. the quad committee has been looking into the alleged interconnected issues of Philippine offshore gaming operators, eJKs, money laundering, illegal drugs, and the previous Duterte administration's bloody war on drugs.
the committee has held 13 marathon hearings since August, with Duterte serving as its highest-profile witness.
"the most chilling revelations pertain to the extrajudicial killings that have scarred our nation's history. the investigations brought to light a harrowing narrative of abuse of power and institutional impunity during the Duterte administration," Barbers said.
"Witness testimonies, corroborated by evidence, revealed a system that incentivized the killing of suspected drug personalities — a system modeled after the so-called 'Davao template' and replicated nationwide," he added.
the Partido Demokratiko Pilipino-Lakas ng Bayan (PDPLaban) on thursday slammed the quad committee, saying its recommendations were politically motivated.
"this act by quadcom is clearly politically motivated and with no clear legal and evidentiary
basis since the testimonies gathered during the hearings were obtained under pressure or coercion, with the resource persons always threatened with contempt if they did not follow the script of quadcom," the PDPLaban said in a statement. they also said the hearings were all biased against the former president and his daughter, Vice President sara Duterte.
"the quadcom also conducted the hearings on the antidrug campaign of the Duterte administration without due process and [with] a strong antiDuterte bias, obviously carried over from the hearings of another house committee attempting to pin down Vice President sara Duterte on alleged fund misuse," the party said.
"this clearly shows that the house of representatives has launched a carefully planned, well-funded, but poorly executed demolition job against [Duterte] and his allies ahead of the 2025 elections," they added. they also questioned the speed of how the quad committee made its recommendations, since the last hearing of the case was just less than a week ago.
the filipino people, however, has seen through the charade quadcom has perpetrated and knows for themselves the success of the anti-drug war in their own communities. No amount of black propaganda or disinformation can ever change the unprecedented anticrime legacy of the Duterte Administration," the PDP-Laban said.
meanwhile, former senator Leila de Lima said the filing of charges against Duterte and his allies is long overdue.
"the quadcom recommendation to file charges against Duterte, et. al. for crimes against
humanity under [republic Act] 9851 in the implementation of the war on drugs is a long-awaited and welcome conclusion to the months-long house inquiry," de Lima wrote on X on thursday.
"It is also a vindication of the efforts of all those who fought the past administration's drug war eJKs [extrajudicial killings] from the very beginning, when Duterte was at the peak of power and there was popular support for his murderous drug war," she added.
on Wednesday night, Davao City 1st District rep. Paolo Duterte welcomed any investigation by an "impartial and credible" body of his supposed links to the illegal drugs shipment in the Port of manila as alleged by two former customs employees after the house quad committee recommended he and others be investigated.
In his sponsorship speech at the house of representatives on Wednesday, quadcom lead Chairman Barbers said that aside from Duterte, those who should be investigated for their alleged participation in the illegal drug trade as revealed by former Bureau of Customs employee Jimmy Guban and former Customs broker mark taguba include Davao Councilor Nilo Abellera Jr., former Presidential task force on media security head Paulino Gutierrez, former environment undersecretary and National Irrigation administrator Benny Antiporda, and individuals Jojo Bacud, Allen Capuyan, and a Tita Nanie."
In a statement late Wednesday night, Duterte said he remained committed to clearing his name and remained confident that the truth will "expose the baseless nature of these accusations." n

the Los Angeles County Department of Public health is reminding residents to remain vigilant as the holidays approach and to use the preventive tools available to protect the County’s most vulnerable populations from CoVID-19. With the rise in gatherings and travel, it is critical to remember that the elderly, those with pre-existing health conditions, and individuals with weakened immune systems are at higher risk of severe illness from the virus. Given the vulnerability of skilled nursing facility residents associated with advanced age and serious health conditions, preventing the spread of CoVID-19 and other respiratory viruses at these facilities remains of paramount importance.
Although the number of open outbreak investigations across Los Angeles County is low in comparison to previous winter seasons, skilled nursing facilities (sNfs) continue to experience a higher number of outbreaks when compared to other sectors. In the past three weeks, three sNfs with active CoVID-19 outbreaks have reported more than fifty total patient cases of CoVID-19.
Cumulatively, over the course of the pandemic, there have been more than 90,000 confirmed CoVID-19 cases among residents and staff at skilled nursing facilities, and more than 6,000 deaths have been reported among residents, highlighting the vulnerability of individuals receiving care at these sites. the proportion of CoVID-19 deaths among skilled nursing facility residents has dropped steadily since vaccinations became available. In the summer of 2020, 58% of CoVID-19 deaths were among skilled nursing facility residents; in June of 2024, this number declined to less than 10%.
"the holidays are a time for connection and celebration, and we are grateful, that this season, we can safely gather with others. however, because some of us will be spending time with residents at higher risk of bad outcomes should they become infected with CoVID-19 or other respiratory viruses, it makes sense to continue to take steps to minimize transmission," said Dr. Barbara ferrer, Ph.D., m.P.h m ed., Director of the Los Angeles County Department of Public health. "By following
sensible precautions including getting an updated CoVID-19 and flu vaccine, wearing masks as appropriate, practicing good hand hygiene, and staying home when feeling unwell, we can protect the most vulnerable members of our community. this is especially important for those of us working with or visiting skilled nursing facility patients.”
staff play a key role in preventing transmission of the virus in settings with vulnerable residents. Public health is working closely with local skilled nursing facilities to communicate the importance of staying home when sick, monitoring adherence to routine infection control practices such as proper hand hygiene and use of personal protective equipment and encourage staff to receive the updated CoVID-19 and flu vaccines if they are not already vaccinated. All healthcare personnel working in licensed care facilities must receive both an annual flu vaccine and the updated CoVID-19 vaccine for the current respiratory virus season (November 1 to April 30) or wear a respiratory mask for the duration of the season while in contact with patients or working in patient-care areas. for helpful resources including guidance on infection prevention and control practices, infectious disease toolkits and guidance documents, policy and procedure templates, previously recorded webinars, and training materials, long-term care facilities can visit Public health’s Long-term Care facilities website: http:// publichealth.lacounty.gov/acd/ LtCf/index.htm.
family members and friends should also take steps to prevent infection when visiting loved ones at skilled nursing facilities. If a person has any signs of illness,
including coughing, sore throat, fever or headache, they should delay their visit until symptoms have passed. taking a CoVID-19 test before a visit can provide extra assurance. since July, all sNfs in LA County have been offering visitors rapid antigen tests and masks. masking is strongly recommended during respiratory virus season, and during the winter months everyone should wear a mask indoors in a skilled nursing facility - this includes staff, residents, and visitors. Vaccination remains one of the most effective tools to protect against the severe effects of CoVID-19.
Updated 2024-2025 CoVID-19 are widely available at many pharmacies and community health centers or through your provider if you have insurance. free vaccines are available to uninsured and underinsured adults at many health care providers and health centers through the California CoVID-19 Bridge Access Program. Public health also provides updated free CoVID-19 and flu vaccines through its Public health clinics, multi-service vaccination sites, and mobile teams, to ensure that the county’s most vulnerable populations, including elderly, disabled people and persons experiencing homelessness, have easy access to vaccines. LA County residents can visit ph.lacounty.gov/vaccines to find vaccine locations. Anyone who has questions, needs assistance with appointments, or are homebound and need to be vaccinated should contact the Public health InfoLine, which is open seven days a week, from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. the number is 1-833-540-0473. for more information, visit: ph.lacounty.gov/vaccines. n

the American education system is poised to be a battleground for funding, diversity and immigration issues under President trump. on his campaign trail, trump has mentioned ending the U.s. Department of education; rolling back federal funding of public schools, particularly those maintaining diversity, equity and inclusion (DeI) policies; supporting vouchers allowing parents, even wealthy ones, to receive taxpayer money to send their kids to private schools; and overturning title IX, a law prohibiting sexbased discrimination which was expanded under Biden to include sexual orientation- and gender-based discrimination.
In late November, trump picked Linda mcmahon to
be the next Department of education (eD) secretary; mcmahon, a major republican donor, is also co-chair of his presidential transition team; former small Business Administration head under his first term; and founder, former president and former Ceo of World Wrestling entertainment (WWe).
K-12 and higher education
“We can expect lots of resistance if trump tries to proceed with plans to dismantle the Department of education, and it will come from unlikely quarters, including other republicans in Congress and the senate,” said Pedro Noguera, dean of the University of southern California rossier school of education. “eliminating the department won’t eliminate public education, but it would jeopardize oversight.”
About 90% of general K-12 public education is state- and local government-funded, with 10% — about $800 billion in 2021 — coming from the federal government. there’s more federal funding at stake in compensatory cases, like special education and schools in impoverished areas,” he explained. “many of these kids are from republican families and areas, and cutbacks to that support are going to get pushback.”
title I, a grant program established in 1965 for disadvantaged schools, commits the federal government to fund 40% of per-pupil special education costs, although actual funding has always remained below 20%, and was less than 13% in 2023.

Tulfo, Ong, Lacson top Senate 4th-quarter poll
by red Mendoza and FranCo JoSe C. Baroña ManilaTimes.net
rePreseNtAtIVe erwin tulfo, physician Willie ong and former senator Panfilo Lacson were the frontrunners in the last survey for the year of senatorial hopefuls conducted by independent pollster Publicus Asia.
tulfo, the ACt-CIs Party-list congressman running under the administration ticket, had a 41-percent voter preference rating, the highest among potential 2025 senatorial candidates. his trust rating dropped slightly from 32 percent in the third quarter to 27 percent.
ong, of the Aksyon Demokratiko party, tied with returning senator Panfilo Lacson at second place with a 39-percent voter preference.
the next top six are former senate President Vicente sotto III, and senators Bong Go and Pia Cayetano.
rounding out the magic 12 are broadcaster Bienvenido tulfo, sen. ronald Dela rosa, former senators emmanuel Pacquiao, francis Pangilinan and Paolo Benigno Aquino, and sen. francis tolentino, who edged out sen. Imee marcos from the previous quarter.
marcos and fellow senators ramon Bong revilla Jr. and Lito Lapid also chalked up lower voter preference and trust ratings compared to previous quarters.
Among new candidates, entertainer Willie revillame debuted in the survey with a 19-percent voter preference, while sagip Party-list rep. rodante marcoleta and former senator Gregorio honasan had 18 percent.
former executive secretary Victor rodriguez had an 11-percent voter preference, an improvement from the 7 percent in the october poll, but remained last in the top 24.
the survey also noted a notable shift in political leanings, with proadministration voters dropping to 28 percent. those who claim to be antiadministration and pro-opposition also rose steadily at 30 percent and 22 percent, respectively.
"Despite these changes,
neutral sentiment continues to dominate, with 48 percent of voters remaining neutral toward the marcos Administration and 51 percent toward the opposition," Publicus said. the survey, which was conducted from Nov. 29 to Dec. 3, had 1,500 respondents randomly drawn from the panel of over 200,000 registered filipino voters maintained by the singapore office of Purespectrum, a U.s.based panel marketplace with a multinational presence.
In a separate survey conducted by tangere, senate President francis escudero remained as the highest-rated government official in the country. the survey, carried out from Dec. 16 to 19, showed slight but consistent increases in both escudero's satisfaction and trust ratings.
his satisfaction rating rose from 52.5 percent to 52.7 percent, and his trust rating from 61.3 percent to 61.5 percent. escudero also had the lowest levels of dissatisfaction and distrust among top officials, reinforcing his widespread approval.
President ferdinand marcos Jr.'s ratings were also up, with satisfaction increasing from 47.30 percent to 47.90 percent, and trust climbing from 59.60 percent to 60.10 percent. the increases were driven primarily by respondents from Northern Luzon and those ages 18 to 50 years old. however, dissatisfaction and distrust remained significant in mindanao and among respondents ages 51 and above.
Vice President sara Duterte experienced a decline in both satisfaction (from 47.5 percent to 45.5 percent) and trust (from 55.5 percent to 53.4 percent).
Duterte continued to enjoy strong support in mindanao, where her ratings remain highest. however, dissatisfaction and distrust toward the vice president have risen slightly, particularly among respondents from Central Luzon, Northern Luzon, southern Luzon and metro manila.
speaker martin romualdez showed modest gains in satisfaction (from 47.3 percent to 47.9 percent) and trust (from 57.4 percent to 58.2 percent). the improvements were driven by respondents in Northern Luzon, metro manila and eastern Visayas. Like the president, romualdez had higher levels of dissatisfaction and distrust in mindanao and among older respondents ages 51 and above.
Chief Justice Alexander Gesmundo recorded a slight increase in his satisfaction and trust ratings, attributed to heightened awareness of his role among respondents in Luzon. the survey used a mobile-based respondent application with a sample size of 2,000 participants.
twelve percent of the respondents were from the National Capital region, 23 percent from Northern Luzon, 22 percent from southern Luzon, 29 percent from the Visayas, and 23 percent from mindanao.

Mary Jane Veloso clemency far off...
In 2010, Veloso was apprehended at the Yogyakarta airport after 2.6 kilos of heroin were found in her baggage. she denied being part of a narcotics syndicate and claimed she was not aware that there were illegal drugs in her suitcase. According to her, someone had tricked her into bringing the heroin to Indonesia from malaysia while she was looking for work.
An Indonesian court sentenced Veloso to death in the same year. the filipina worker was supposed to be executed by firing squad in April 2015 but was given a temporary reprieve after her recruiter had surrendered to filipino authorities. the marcos administration asked Indonesia to grant Veloso clemency in 2022. Last month, marcos announced that Indonesia had lowered Veloso’s death sentence to life imprisonment, a development he attributed to the “good relations” between manila and Jakarta.
Veloso returned to the Philippines on Wednesday morning with government officials and was taken to the Correctional Institution for Women (CIW) in mandaluyong City. she then urged marcos to grant her clemency.
With her transfer to the Philippines, Veloso’s sentence has been lowered to life imprisonment since there is no capital punishment in the country.
If marcos decides to grant Veloso clemency, the Philippines no longer needs to seek
permission from Indonesia since no condition was set for her repatriation.
GCTA eligibility Bureau of Corrections (BuCor) has announced that it will form a board to evaluate whether Veloso qualifies for Good Conduct time Allowance (GCtA). the board will review Veloso’s records, which were provided by Indonesian authorities. It will also determine if the 15 years she spent incarcerated in Indonesia can be credited to GCtA, which could potentially reduce her sentence.
“In due time, we will be able to know if mary Jane is qualified for GCtA and if there’s GCtA, has she served the minimum so that will entitle her to parole at our level, we can recommend that,” BuCor Director General Gregorio Catapang confirmed on Wednesday.
meanwhile, Justice Undersecretary raul Vasquez said Veloso is now subject to the laws and regulations of Philippine jurisdiction, just like any other persons deprived of liberty as referenced by a recent supreme Court ruling which extended GCtA eligibility to those convicted of heinous crimes, recidivists and escapees. the moment mary Jane Veloso was transferred to the Philippines, she would be subjected just like any person deprived of liberty to all the privileges, rights, and prerogatives granted to a person deprived of liberty,” Vasquez explained. Vasquez also mentioned that

Existential threat
Workers in poultry and dairy industries are at a unique risk for catching an infection: humans who have close contact with sick birds can catch the virus when it gets into a person’s eyes, nose or mouth, or is inhaled. Before looking into the matter, the DmV quickly issued a public apology, saying it was “taking swift action to recall” the plate, which was meant to honor the truck owner’s heritage and grandchildren.
In a post on X, DmV described the plate as “unacceptable and disturbing.”
the son of the truck’s owner bewailed the misunderstanding and said the explanation for the meaning of the plate was included in the application, as is required.

“While the plate’s owner has shared that “LoLo” means “grandfather” in tagalog, and the configuration was intended to honor their filipino heritage, we recognize that the same combination of letters and numbers has been interpreted by others as offensive, particularly within the Jewish community,”
orrock said.
“Given the DmV’s commitment to ensuring that personalized license plates do not carry configurations that can be interpreted in a manner prohibited by our regulations, in line with established protocols, we will recall this specific plate configuration.
“We understand that language and symbols can hold different meanings across cultures and communities. What may be a term of endearment in one context can be perceived differently in another.” the department apologizes “for any distress this situation may have caused and appreciate the public’s understanding as we work to improve our procedures,” orrock said. percent of students from low-income families are also eligible for title I. In 2022, these and similar title I funds for impoverished schools accounted for $15.6 billion; about 63% of public schools in the country’s over 13,000 districts were eligible.
among the privileges of the GCtA is good conduct during the imprisonment period. eligibility, including the conditions she faced in Indonesia, would factor in her behavior during incarceration, and any favorable circumstances.
meanwhile, discussions surrounding an absolute pardon for Veloso continue, with calls for President marcos to grant her clemency.
Vasquez noted that the decision on granting such a pardon remains solely at the president’s discretion. “Anything is on the table,” he said when asked about the possibility of clemency or parole.
for now, Veloso will undergo a 60-day quarantine, evaluation, and initial security classification at the CIW. After this, she will be transferred to the facility’s maximum-security camp.
meanwhile, thousands of people have so far signed the online petition urging President marcos to pardon Veloso.
As of thursday afternoon, the petition on change.org has gathered 3,293 signatures, which pleaded with marcos to show compassion by granting Veloso clemency based on humanitarian grounds as she is a victim of human trafficking.
While Veloso remains in detention, police have started security preparations for her possible homecoming, should she be given clemency and decide to return to Cabanatuan City in Nueva ecija, the place where she grew up. (With reports from Emmanuel Tupas)
In his first and upcoming administration, trump has also supported private school choice proposals including tax credit vouchers, a measure overwhelmingly rejected in 2018 by voters in states including Arizona, Nebraska, Kentucky and Colorado.
however, backing from wealthy conservatives has led nearly a dozen states to create or expand private school voucher or savings programs in recent years.
Despite resistance to policies like these, often from their own voter base, “a lot of what is driving the administration right now is ideology aimed at launching and sustaining culture wars, like attacks on transgender students and DeI … without bridging the educational gaps our students face,” said Nogura.
According to eD data, 54% of Americans between ages 16 and 74 read below a sixth grade level.
“our demographics are changing to include more students traditionally left out of our nation’s education priorities, and I don’t see the incoming administration’s policies doing better by them,” said thomas toch, director of the futureed program at Georgetown University’s mcCourt school of Public Policy.
higher education policies supported by trump include taxing endowments, nearly half of which are held by 22 out of nearly 6,000 U.s. colleges and universities; reducing oversight of for-profit institutions like
the unaccredited trump University, which ceased in 2010 after several lawsuits; reducing federal Pell Grants and work-study programs like AmeriCorps; and ending loan forgiveness and DeI initiatives created under President Biden. toch added that “International students are also at risk, given the administration’s promises to limit legal and illegal immigration into the Us,” particularly given trump’s pick of first-term immigration hardliner stephen miller as the White house deputy chief of staff for policy.
Legal challenges
Legal precedents present major barriers to other trumpsupported policies, like immigration status-dependent public school attendance and Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) rollbacks, said thomas A. saenz, president and general counsel of the mexican American Legal Defense and education fund.
Plyler v. Doe, the 1982 supreme Court decision guaranteeing every child the right to attend free K-12 public school, “is not in any imminent danger at all,” he explained.
“I know we’ve seen a court majority that has overturned long-standing precedent for reproductive choice and affirmative action, but both cases were results of decadeslong overturning campaigns by the right, which is not the case with Plyler.” the Plyler decision, which has been incorporated into federal statutory law, would also prevent raids by ICe or individual immigration officers on public K-12 school campuses. When the supreme Court overturned trump’s attempt to eliminate DACA in 2020, it did not have the six-to-three republican-appointed majority it currently does. however, eliminating DACA
would be more difficult in trump’s second term than the first attempt, which was done through an announcement by the Attorney General to change an obama-era policy.
In 2022, the Biden administration strengthened DACA through a formal regulatory rule-making process. this means that eliminating DACA would require an extensive process involving a public proposal in the federal register with public comment and government response periods.
“many of the antidiscrimination protections and civil rights we count on in education are even more protected by legislation which would require action from a Congress that, despite formal republican control, is quite evenly split in the house of representatives, where it would be difficult to enact anything without unanimous republican support,” saenz said.
“What we will get is a daily barrage of rhetoric that is anti-immigrant, anti-DeI, anticivil rights and anti-public education, including overstated powers of the President to do what he wants,” he continued.
“It’s a calculated campaign to convince local decision makers, including school district officials, to withdraw on their own from these issue … But that rhetoric can’t be made real in most cases without congressional action.” my biggest concern is that rhetoric still has repercussions. People get scared by it, even if it’s not followed up by action. We certainly saw that under the first trump administration,” he added. “We need to do the best we can to prepare for that rhetoric, and remember that the President and his cabinet members do not have dictatorial power. they still have to follow due process for the major changes they’d like to see.” n
Probe Immigration over Roque’s escape from PH – quad comm
by FAith ARgosino Inquirer.net
mANILA — the Bureau of Immigration (BI) must be probed to uncover who helped former Presidential spokesperson harry roque leave the country undetected, according to the house of representatives quad committee. the mega panel investigating illegal drugs, the Philippine offshore gambling operators (PoGos), and the extrajudicial killings during the administration of former President rodrigo Duterte made the recommendation in a progress report submitted to the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI).
evading legal orders issued by the Joint Committee legal orders issued by the Joint Committee, Atty. herminio harry roque, Jr. and myla roque were reported to have flown to the United Arab emirates after he was cited in contempt for failure to submit pertinent documents,” a copy of the report released to the media on thursday, December 19 read.
“Accordingly, the Bureau of Immigration should be investigated to determine who helped Atty. herminio harry roque, Jr. escaped undetected,” it added.
It was Vice President sara Duterte who first dropped a hint that roque might be out of the country.
During the media briefing last month, Duterte mentioned roque, whom the Philippine National Police had been tracking down since the quad comm issued an arrest order against him last september 12.
“Look at sec. harry roque, ayaw umalis non sa bansa kasi ‘yung mga anak niya maiiwanan. Pero look at him, umalis na lang,” Duterte said. there was a long pause from her before she added: “But no, hindi, bastos sila, bastos din kami.”
(Look at roque—he didn’t want to leave the country before because his kids would be left behind. But now, look at him— he left anyway. But no, they’re rude, so we’re rude too.) the news was only confirmed after roque submitted his counter-affidavit to the qualified human trafficking complaints
filed against him in Abu Dhabi, United Arab emirates, on December 3, as revealed by the Department of Justice. on the same day, the BI said that roque may have left the country through illegal means, “possibly aided by unscrupulous individuals.” the agency said it was also eyeing to file a falsification of public documents complaint against roque.
A month prior, BI also reported that mylah roque also left the country. she was in singapore for a checkup, according to surigao del Norte 2nd District rep. Ace Barbers. this came after the quad committee held mylah in contempt and ordered her arrest in october after she failed to respond to a subpoena from the panel.
mylah was invited to the quad committee after her name popped up in some companies owned by her husband. those firms were believed to be linked to PoGo hub Lucky south 99 in Porac, Pampanga. the PoGo hub was raided due to human trafficking allegations. harry, on the other hand, was also linked to Lucky south 99 after authorities found bank documents and other papers bearing his signature during the raid.
he also admitted later that he accompanied Katherine Cassandra Li ong, an incorporator of Whirlwind Corporation that leased land to the raided PoGo hub in Porac, to settle fees with the Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corporation.
the former spokesperson was also invited to the quad comm’s probe but was cited for contempt twice after he skipped the hearing last september 12 and refused to comply with a subpoena on key documents, like his statement of Assets, Liabilities, and Net Worth, and other tax declarations.
Probe into Roque’s involvement in POGOs
Aside from investigating the BI, the mega panel also recommended the criminal investigation into the extent of roque’s “involvement in the operation of Lucky south 99 and Whirlwind Corporation, among others.”
moreover, it recommended the Anti-money Laundering Council to investigate the acquisition of roque’s assets.
“thereafter, a freeze order over the assets owned by Atty. herminio harry roque, Jr. should be applied for provided it is shown that they are materially linked, relates to, or involves predicate offenses defined in republic Act No. 9160 (2001) or the Anti-money Laundering Act of 2001,” it added. regarding his location, the mega panel said relevant government agencies “should be mobilized and tapped to locate him and bring him back to the Philippines.”
“If a criminal investigation has been commenced against Atty. herminio harry roque, Jr. and he is in a country where the Philippines has an extradition treaty with, efforts should be made to bring him back based on that treaty,” the report said. n
Drug war deaths: Go, Dela Rosa to let court decide if cases will be filed
by ChARie mAe F. ABARCA Inquirer.net
mANILA — senators ronald “Bato” dela rosa and Christopher Lawrence “Bong” Go are leaving it up to the Philippine courts to decide if ever cases are filed against them over drug war deaths. the two senators aired their stance a few hours after the house of representatives’ quad committee recommended the filing of charges against them, former president rodrigo Duterte and others over drug war deaths during the previous administration.
Dela rosa, who served as the chief implementer of Duterte’s bloody drug war being a former top cop, said these developments prove that the lower chamber wants to demolish the Dutertes and their allies.
“that’s what they really want to happen, to implicate us hard— so you know—to demolish us. to demolish us, especially with the upcoming election and
when sen. Bong Go will not win next year because we have been demolished so much now. [If we don’t win] next year, the next Congress will continue to be theirs. there will be no obstruction here in the senate in their impeachment of Vice President sara Duterte. so that’s it. they will continue with it. the world is theirs,” said Dela rosa in an interview over DZrh Asked if he will face the charges, should it push through, fair and square in court, the former top cop answered in the affirmative.
“Yes. I have a lot of faith in our judicial system. our courts never sleep and God never sleeps. God knows what is really happening here in our country, the Philippines, so I am confident that we will get justice,” he said.
A similar sentiment was aired by Go who maintained, in a statement also issued Wednesday, December 18 that it’s vital to let the filipinos decide if there was “peace and order” during the previous administration.
But like Dela rosa, Go said he is also leaving it to Philippine courts to decide should cases be filed. since that is the recommendation of the quad comm, then we leave it up to the Philippine courts to decide if ever cases are filed. After all, that’s what former President rodrigo Duterte said numerous times,” said Go.
Go, however, couldn’t help but question the intent of the lower chamber’s quad committee, noting that it was them who first emphasized the need not to implicate those who are not involved.
“But now, it seems that everything that was mentioned in their hearings, even if it was hearsay or without evidence, they accepted,” said Go.
“I don’t look like a criminal. they said that I am kind. so let the people really judge. As for me, I will continue to help as much as I can and I will prioritize serving my fellow filipinos,” he added. n

End the export of Filipinos
President Marcos has a dream: to “make overseas work a choice rather than a necessity” one day.
speaking at a ceremony in malacañang last week to honor individuals and organizations for excelling in their fields and championing overseas filipino workers (ofWs), the president cited reforms in governance and economic development that, he said, would provide filipinos with more and better opportunities here.
But he also recognized that filipino talents would continue to cross international borders in search of better-paying jobs. “Against this backdrop, the Philippines remains committed to ensuring that the rights and well-being of our overseas filipinos and their families are safeguarded at all times, wherever they may be,” mr. marcos said.
And there’s the rub.
Cornerstone of economic policy
As dramatic as it sounds, it’s hard to take the president’s “dream” seriously when a cornerstone of his administration’s economic policy is precisely geared toward the exportation, or exploitation, of filipino workers, whose remittances help keep the economy afloat. It’s even harder to appreciate his vision in the face of the realities that push our compatriots to seek greener pastures abroad.
As the think tank migration Policy Institute (mPI) noted in an article published in January, the Philippines has relied on international migration as an economic engine since the enactment of the Labor Code under Presidential Decree No. 442, signed by mr. marcos’ late father and namesake in 1974. that law explicitly mandates the government to “promote the overseas employment of filipino workers through a comprehensive market promotion and development program,” and “to recruit and place workers for overseas employment on a governmentto-government arrangement and in such other

President marcos, our team at the Philippine embassy in Washington, D.C. is going full blast with our economic diplomacy efforts as we continue our engagements with U.s. legislators and government officials. In fact, we discussed this extensively during our strategic planning session with Philippine consuls general all across the United states, including Guam, on how we will be moving forward relative to the incoming trump administration.
We see a number of opportunities in exploring potential joint ventures in various sectors between U.s. and Philippine investors. A very good example of a successful joint venture is Amber Kinetics, a global leader in the design and manufacture of long-duration flywheel energy storage systems.
I recently visited their facility in Union City, California and was
DoNALD trump’s re-election against the backdrop of a record marred by criminal allegations and accusations of immorality can speak volumes for the powerful strategies and the messaging capacity to resonate with certain segments of the electorate. reflecting elements of the Philippine political landscape, rodrigo Duterte and ferdinand “Bongbong” marcos Jr. both emerged victorious in previous elections despite controversial backgrounds and strong opposition. By examining the messaging, public relations tactics and socio-political contexts in each case, the power of great Pr shines through in influencing voter perception and behavior. The power of a strong persona and identity politics trump’s re-election, like the political successes of Duterte and marcos in the Philippines, was dependent on a strong, unconventional persona that gained the support of a particular audience. the Pr campaign that supported trump, Duterte and marcos all focused on themes of “toughness” and the ability
sectors as policy may dictate.” It has been 50 years since the Labor Code was passed, and as the Philippines emerges from the CoVID-19 pandemic that hindered migration globally, “the country is doubling down on its ambitions to serve as a provider of workers to the world,” the mPI said.
Another indicator of the government’s intentions to continue pursuing overseas employment was the creation of the Department of migrant Workers (DmW) in December 2021.
10 million OFWs in 200 countries
Born from the ashes of multiple fragmented agencies, the DmW claims to protect ofWs and facilitate reintegration. But its very existence underscores an inherent contradiction at the center of the government’s policies on overseas employment: Instead of creating livelihood opportunities at home, the administration continues to institutionalize migration as a solution, reinforcing the unofficial labor export policy that began in the 1970s.
As a result of such a policy, an estimated 10 million filipinos now live and work in more than 200 countries, many in temporary or irregular status, according to the mPI report. In 2022, more than 1.2 million ofWs were deployed, more than double the figure in 2020, when much of the world had closed its doors to migrant workers at the height of the pandemic.
Unfortunately, despite the president’s declaration, it’s unlikely that the government will turn its back on ofW remittances, which account for nearly 9 percent of the gross domestic product, in lieu of substantive reforms. remittances soared to record levels in 2022, reaching $32.5 billion, providing a lifeline to an economy that is still recovering from pandemic shocks, the mPI report said.
Economic diplomacy
given a briefing on the company’s cutting-edge technology that provides safe, sustainable and reliable energy storage solutions for the modern grid.
former country chairman of shell in the Philippines edgar Chua is the Ceo of Amber Kinetics. During a tour of the facility, I spoke with chief technology officer and co-founder Dr. seth sanders, who said they are expanding operations in the Philippines where their innovation hub is located. their facility in Batangas manufactures, assembles and tests flywheels, while their demo site is located at the De La salle University in Laguna.
Amber Kinetics is a modest company, but it has huge potential because of the role it plays in global efforts to transition towards a clean energy future. It also has a significant role in advancing the Philippines’ renewable energy sector because its investment and innovation in energy storage are transforming the country’s energy landscape, driving sustainability and supporting our transition to a greener future.
Armscor Global Defense is
another company that has joint ventures in the United states, with facilities in Nevada, montana and Utah. this is an example of a quid pro quo business engagement since it will be beneficial to both the U.s. and the Philippines – which is how we are going to approach our economic diplomacy agenda with the trump administration. these are the kinds of economic activities that we want to see more of in the future, with joint ventures in various sectors that include semiconductors, digital, infrastructure and artificial intelligence. our main thrust is economic diplomacy that would help the country achieve economic prosperity that can translate to economic security. to this end, there have been a lot of positive developments like the P1.25-billion partnership between ramon Ang’s New NAIA Infra Corp. (NNIC) and manny Pangilinan’s manila electric Company (meralco) to upgrade the power supply at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA). this collaboration will ensure a reliable supply of electricity at NAIA and will “directly improve
Yet, this dependence on ofWs comes at a high cost. filipino workers are sent to war zones in the middle east, caught in the crossfire among combatants, or become victims of illegal recruiters and traffickers, facing potential execution in countries where capital punishment is imposed. mary Jane Veloso, whose death sentence was commuted by Indonesia and who is set to be transferred to the Philippines, stands as a rare exception to the fate suffered by ofWs on death row abroad.
Preserving workers’ dignity such vulnerabilities are the natural consequence of a system that prioritizes dollar inflows over the safety and welfare of the people.
If the president truly aspires to redefine the future of filipino labor, he must walk his talk by stopping
functionality, safety and the passenger experience, setting the foundation for a world class airport that every filipino can be proud of,” said NNIC President ramon Ang.
I have known ramon for a long time, whom I fondly call “Don ramon” considering how he has transformed san miguel into what it is today. our good friend, the late smC chairman eduardo “Danding” Cojuangco, had great admiration for ramon’s business acumen and his vision, and many would agree that without him, smC would not be what it has become today – one of the biggest and most diversified conglomerates in the Philippines. enhancing power reliability at NAIA will help “empower the tourism and travel industry, support economic growth” and transform NAIA into a world-class facility, said meralco chairman manny Pangilinan.
I have said on several occasions that a stable and reliable supply of electricity is crucial in attracting investors to sustain growth and transform the economy, and the country’s biggest private electric distribution company can help bring economic progress to many parts of the country.
Explaining Trump, Duterte and Marcos
to incite radical change. even though each politician has tainted reputations, the person in question tended to get a certain “champion of the people” image across, one who would “stand up” to the elites, the status quo and the mainstream media. In trump’s case, his Pr strategy set the story that he was victimized and unfairly targeted by political foes. the campaign “swept under the rug” claims of criminal conduct and portrayed it as an effort to silence a populist leader. Duterte, in the same vein, postured himself as an “outsider” who could take some fight against the “clash” system, more so with his populist anti-drug war advocacies. similarly, marcos Jr. deployed Pr tactics to restore the reputation of the marcos family by repositioning them as victims of politics and hImseLf as a victor in a struggle for a reputation of “strong” leadership. In each of these three examples, each leader successfully positioned himself as an underdog fighting for the “little guy,” which increased his appeal and eclipsed his negatives. Control of narrative the dominance over the media narrative is a critical factor that explains the electoral success of trump, Duterte and marcos. these leaders utilized a directto-audience approach on social
media to circumvent traditional media channels. this style enabled them to communicate directly with their supporters, create or push counter-narratives, and discredit mainstream media as biased or out-of-touch. trump’s use of X, formerly twitter, Duterte’s reliance on social media platforms and marcos’s broad network of influencers on the internet all contributed to what had become an echo chamber for their message, amplifying their messages and shutting them off from public criticism.
Duterte and marcos used Pr tactics that blurred lines between truth and propaganda very effectively. Duterte’s infamous facebook-centric campaign created a deluge of proadministration content not only in promoting him as a “man of action” but also casting suspicion over mainstream media’s credibility. marcos’ campaign utilized the social space to “rewrite” the marcos regime narrative to frame his father’s rule as positive. this is similar to trump’s re-election campaign, which exploited his “fake news” narrative to discredit negative coverage. from a public relations perspective, controlling the narrative enabled these leaders to create an “alternative reality” for their followers, in which criticism and allegations did not apply to them.
Appeal to emotions and national identity
A classic Pr strategy that trump, Duterte and marcos utilized was the appeal to emotions, especially in terms of nationalism and identity.
trump’s “make America Great Again” slogan cleverly tapped into the disillusionment of globalization and demographic shifts with the promise of a nostalgic ideal of America that appealed to a great many voters.
Duterte presented his campaign as promising to “restore peace and order” by tapping into the fears associated with crime and drugs as embracing a strongman who would defend at all costs the people he serves. marcos, by nostalgia for his father’s regime, framed the marcos era as a “golden age” for the Philippines – a narrative that Pr campaigns pushed in hopes to attract voters who are disillusioned by current political elites. this appeal to national identity is particularly powerful because it extends beyond scandals and controversies the candidate might be involved in. A leader who is perceived as fighting for the “soul” of the nation or an idealized version of that country will have people blinded to personal failures. the Pr tactic here is to elevate the
the government’s reliance on labor export and fixing the structural weaknesses that drive migration: corruption, red tape, the patronage system, and government neglect. Decades of dependence have created a vicious cycle where families invest heavily in education not to keep talent in the country but to export it, and where nurses, doctors, engineers, teachers, and skilled workers are seen as commodities rather than valued pillars of society. In the end, the president must transform his dream into a vow and a call to action. ending the labor export policy is not just about economics—it is about preserving the dignity of filipino workers. Above all, it is about proving to our people they hold the same potential to thrive at home as they do on foreign soil. (inquirer.net)
As pointed out by meralco senior vice president Arnel Casanova during a financial forum with the monday Circle to discuss the economic and business landscape, a primary objective is to “make the Philippines competitive in the global economy, particularly in the context of becoming digital.”
In terms of food security, for instance, power is needed for cold storage. In the area of health care, power is crucial for hospitals to operate very well, for quality of life to be better and for businesses to thrive. the Philippines is really in a good place today, judging from the positive economic outlooks from international financial institutions like the World Bank that projects the economy growing at an average of six percent over the period from 2024 to 2026.
According to World Bank country director for the Philippines Zafer mustafaoglu, “strong growth puts the country on a firmer footing to maintain gains in poverty reduction,” but warned about the country’s vulnerability to extreme weather events like typhoons.
Knowing the economic impact of natural disasters, President marcos has called on the National Disaster risk reduction and man-
candidate above personal qualities and place them within a bigger nationalistic narrative so criticisms can seem irrelevant or unpatriotic.
Strategic deployment of scapegoating and anti-system sentiment
A common denominator between the three – rump, Duterte and marcos – is their exploitation of scapegoating for Pr purposes. trump blamed “the radical left,” the “deep state” and undocumented immigrants for America’s ailments, playing to fears and locking in his voting base.
Duterte pointed to drug addicts and criminals. marcos tapped into a deep-seated list of grievances against liberal democratic elites. By identifying enemies that were already unpopular or viewed with suspicion, they tapped into preexisting prejudices and redirected voter anger. this tactic creates a strong sense of “us vs them” among supporters, who see their candidate as the last defense against these perceived threats.
Distrust in the system has, in particular, become a potent Pr strategy in recent years: the assertions of election fraud by Donald trump and of media bias by rodrigo Duterte echo classic campaign rhetoric of ferdinand marcos, which portrayed him as a victim of an unjust political order. the narratives were constantly hammered home by the Pr teams
agement Council, other concerned agencies and local government units to “develop innovative solutions” that are science-based, sustainable and future ready. the Luzon economic Corridor (LeC), which is a partnership between the Philippines, Japan and the United states to develop infrastructure projects such as railways, port modernization and upgrades, semiconductor supply chains and others aimed at driving economic growth, is also attracting interest from countries like Australia, south Korea, sweden and the United Kingdom to participate in development projects under the LeC. We have positive vibes and confidence that under the trump administration, the economic relationship between the Philippines and the United states would be even better, since our focus on investments down the line is a two-way street – beneficial to both countries in the long run. to whip up support, cultivating a sense of collective victimhood among their followers and garbing their leaders with trappings of resistance.
Lessons in PR: Harnessing controversial but effective strategies the reelection of leaders like trump, Duterte and marcos illustrates that Pr campaigns, particularly when accompanied by social media, can be effective in shaping popular perception. A lesson for political Pr practitioners is that winning is not tantamount to a perfect reputation. It is winning and holding onto a strong, memorable brand. Both of these leaders employed controversial strategies that polarized voters, but their populist, nationalist and anti-institutional narratives proved more compelling than the voices warning about moral or legal issues. furthermore, it has changed the concept of “truth” from the public’s point of view by deploying counter-narratives and information flow control. here, the power of Pr in influencing political discourse is palpable, also showing how a leader can use controversy as an instrument rather than an obstacle. by Armin P. AdinA Inquirer.net
CHELSEA Manalo revealed that a lot of doors have opened for her after being proclaimed as the first-ever Miss Universe Asia at the recently concluded 73rd Miss Universe pageant in Mexico.
The 25-year-old tourism management graduate from De La Salle-Araneta University has been modeling professionally since she was a teenager, and now she could embark on a career outside the fashion industry.
“Maraming pumapasok na (I have been receiving so many) opportunities like showbiz, hosting, modeling international, theater, singer, so marami (there are a lot),” she told INQUIRER. net in a sit-down interview after her homecoming press conference mounted by Bingo Plus at the Empire Studio at Estancia Mall in Pasig City on Saturday afternoon, December 14.
“La Bulakenya” faced journalists and online content creators five days since coming back from Los Angeles, California, in the United States, where she stayed for a little while after the international competition in Mexico, to relax and catch up with family and friends.
Manalo also shared that she would still want to continue working with the Miss Universe Philippines organization (MUPH) “on the advocacy that is close to my heart, which are the youth.”
The first black woman to represent the Philippines in Miss Universe finds her new international title as an honor.
“It is dream come true [that] I will forever treasure. It goes not just to me, but I am extending this beyond, to each and every Filipino and women,” Manalo said.
She also profusely thanked everyone who supported her in her journey to the Miss Universe pageant, which has been transformational for her personally.
“I think I have already become that woman that has brought that power and influence for so many women. You can dream much more than just Miss Universe,” she shared. When asked how different is the Chelsea Manalo now from the person who got on the plane to Mexico in late October, she said: “She is strong-willed, more
powerful. She already knows how to navigate challenges in her life. Now she is becoming a person who has so much influence and opportunity that she can extend too.”
She is confident that her title as Miss Universe Asia will also take her to ventures outside pageantry.
“It will reinvent me as a better person. I hope it takes me to a greater and more beautiful person, and take me to more opportunities,” she said.
The national pageant is about to roll out its 2025 edition early next year, with several ladies hoping to succeed Manalo already chosen, while many others are about to get crowned.
And the reigning queen is positive that she will relinquish her title to somebody “who is very powerful, strong, with a heart, and with the dignity and heart of a Filipino woman.”

After marrying Cielo in the Philippines, Carlos petitioned for her green card. When the priority date became current, the couple sought Atty. Gurfinkel’s expertise again, concerned that the “phantom marriage” might jeopardize her chances.
With careful preparation and guidance, Cielo confidently addressed the Consul’s questions during her visa interview, successfully securing her immigrant visa. Megastar calls BBM ‘my favorite in their family’
by HAnnAH mAllorcA Inquirer.net
POLITICS took a backseat at the annual “ Konsyerto sa Palasyo ” where Sharon Cuneta and her husband, former Senator Francis “Kiko” Pangilinan, were among the guests of President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. and First Lady Liza AranetaMarcos in Malacañanang on Sunday night, December 15.
The fifth concert edition was held at the historic Kalayaan Grounds, coinciding with the 50th Metro Manila Film Festival (MMFF) where some celebrities whose films are participating in the festival took to the stage and were honored.
Cuneta shared their interaction with the Marcoses on her Instagram page, saying it was an event filled with “nothing but love and other friends.” She also recalled some of her unforgettable
memories when she was in Malacañang, saying it was the place where she saw a disco “for the very first time,” and saw then visiting Pope Paul VI, among other memories.
“When we arrived tonight, I got the warmest hug from the FL (Araneta-Marcos), like no time had passed! And then, of course, the warmest, biggest hug from the president. With some side kwento ( stories ), just like old times! Thank you so much again, Mr. President and Madam First Lady,” she said. She further said that Marcos has always been her “favorite in their family.”
Marcos and Pangilinan — who is seeking reelection in the 2025 mid-term polls — came from two opposing political camps in the 2022 presidential elections, where the latter ran for vice president, losing to Sara Duterte-Carpio. Marcos and Duterte eventually won an overwhelming lead over

Apl.de.ap hopes to collaborate with Lea Salonga, Sarah Geronimo
MANILA — Filipino American rapper Apl.de.ap of the Black Eyed Peas is thinking of remixing the new Christmas song he co-wrote and co-produced, and perhaps even tap some friends for possible collaborations.
“It’s That Time of the Year” is a collaboration between Apl.de.ap, frequent music producer Keith Harris, and songwriter David “DC” Quinones for the children of the Sisters of Mary School choir.
After telling Philstar.com in an exclusive interview how the song came about, Apl.de. ap shared he had always wanted to make a Christmas album, even with his contestants from the local editions of “The Voice.”
“It’s like a project that we always try to do during the holidays,” he added, reiterating he wants to collaborate with his mentees from “The Voice Teens.”
Apl.de.ap said he and Keith put a Black Eyed Peas twist to “It’s That Time of the Year,” as if the group put out it’s own Christmas song.
“We wanted something very timeless and now we could even, like I just came up with the idea that I wanna remix it,” the rapper continued.
“Definitely I’m planning to do a rap verse [but] with the time constraint that we have, it’s a lot to put
together sometimes. We could grow into it, we could add other artists,” the Grammy-winning artist added.
Some of the names Apl.de.ap mentioned were fellow “The Voice” coaches Lea Salonga and Sarah Geronimo, and Jessica “J. Rey Soul” Reynoso, the Filipino-American session member of the Black Eyed Peas.
“This is just the initial [plan]... so it’s just gonna grow from here,” Apl.de.ap ended.
Gary Valenciano to stage ‘Pure Energy’ concert finale for a cause
MANILA — After the success of his sold-out three nights concert in Mall of Asia Arena last April and May, music maven Gary Valenciano embarks on a ‘final’ performance in Araneta Coliseum, days before Christmas.
Simply dubbed “Pure Energy: One More Time,” the two-day concert at the Big Dome will celebrate Gary’s 40th year in the music industry. The Original Pilipino Music (OPM) icon is going back to where it all began. His over four-decade career is marked by passion, resilience, and a strong rapport with his audience.
“This is a repeat of my three-day concert series last summer, a sort of finale, one last time for a concert of this magnitude - concerts done in big venues - before moving to more intimate (emotional and slow) concert
formats. This also celebrates my fortieth year - and in the same venue, the Big Dome - where it all started at the Araneta Coliseum on April 13, 1984,” shared Gary, during an intimate presser at the Tong Luk resto in Greenhills.
Gary’s repertoire will include such hits as “ Hataw Na ,” “Shout for Joy,” as well as ballads that people come to love. He will also be performing the Chick Corea classic “Spain.” His cover of that song has garnered millions of views on YouTube.
Celebrity couplethe “Songbird” and the “Songwriter” - Regine Velasquez and Ogie Alcasid will grace the first night show with Maymay Entrata; while P-Pop sensations SB19, rapper Gloc-9, Darren Espanto, and Jay Durias will be his guests on the second night.
“The repertoire for the two nights is mostly the same with a change of about five songs, plus the encore,” revealed

“HELLO, Love, Again” (HLA) director Cathy Garcia-Sampana said she is open to the possibility of helming a Part 3 of the love story of Joy and Ethan, the characters brought to life by Kathryn Bernardo and Alden Richards in the movie as well as in its first installment, “Hello, Love, Goodbye” (HLG).
Bernardo and Richards recently bid their farewell to their characters after HLA made film history as the highestgrossing Filipino movie of all time, earning P1.4 billion at the box office. In a TV Patrol report, GarciaSampana said she is not closing her doors to doing a follow-up to HLA, saying one “cannot put a good movie down.” “You don’t end it. Because in real life, tayo we don’t stop going,” she said. The filmmaker said life goes on,
and it will pose new challenges that put one’s “character to the test,” which can also be applied in the case of Joy and Ethan. “We don’t stop encountering new problems and things that will put your character to the test. Kahit natuto na tayo, may dadating na ichachallenge uli ang natutunan mo. Hangga’t buhay si Joy and Ethan, you can make a story out of them,” she said. (We don’t stop encountering new problems and things that put our character to the test. Even if we learn something new, challenges will come to test what we’ve learned. While Joy and Ethan are alive, you can make a story out of them.) Starting the New Year fresh with a divorce
Barrister’s Corner
TO many people, the New Year signifies a chance to have a fresh beginning. This is also the time of the year many people realize when a marriage is not working out and it may be time to start a new life as a single person whether or not you have children. You can decide to take action and file a divorce.
Before you take any action, you need to think about your situation carefully. First, you should decide whether you should move out of the family residence or not? If you and your spouse are communicating and have some type of respect left with one another, it may be more economical to continue residing in the same household until you resolve the issues in the divorce case. However, if your relationship is heated and riddled with conflict, then someone should move out. If your spouse has threatened you, hurt you, or committed domestic violence, you may file a domestic violence temporary restraining order and request the court to order your spouse to move out of the house. In the same application, you may also request for custody, support, and attorney’s fees. If on the other hand you decide to be the one to move out, you should move somewhere close to your spouse if you have children to make it easier for both of you to co-parent with the children.
Second, you should decide whether your spouse is the type who will disclose all the financial assets or not after you file for
divorce. Although the family code (Family Code 2100 et seq.) imposes a duty to disclose all material facts and information, spouses’ are not always forthcoming in disclosing completely all assets, debts, income and expenses specially after a divorce case is commenced. What sometimes happens is once a divorce case is commenced, assets are either not disclosed, disappears, or documents/ bank statements are not produced even with formal discovery. You should gather and make copies of all financial documents before filing the divorce.
Third, there is an automatic temporary restraining order (ATROS) in place once you file and serve your spouse with the divorce papers. The four standard mutual restraining orders are 1) removing their minor children from the state without the prior written consent of the other party or a court order. Family Code Section 2040(A)(1) 2) restraint from transferring, encumbering, hypothecating, concealing, or in any way disposing of any property, real or personal, whether community, quasi-community, or separate without the other party’s written consent or court order; Fam Code 2040(a)(2) 3) restraint from cashing, borrowing against, canceling, transferring, disposing of, or changing the beneficiaries of any insurance or other coverage, including life, health, automobile, and disability held for the benefit of the parties and their child for whom support may be orders. Fam C 2040(a) (3). 4) restraint from creating a nonprobate transfer or modifying a nonprobate transfer in a manner that affects the disposition of property subject to the transfer without the other party’s written consent or court order. Fam C 2040(a)(4)). There are exceptions to the above restrictions. One
exception is for property transfers in the usual course of business or for the necessities of life. Examples would be property transfers as part of your usual business operations or to pay for usual household living expenses. Another exception is payment of reasonable attorney’s fees. Fam C. 2040(a)(2). If you need to do any transactions that may violate the ATROS, it is best to do it prior to filing and serving the divorce petition provided you do not breach your fiduciary duty to your spouse. If you are thinking of filing a divorce, it is best to consult an experienced family law attorney before taking any action.

Pastor’s Notes
ReveRend Rodel G. BalaGtas
DEAR Parish Family,
The Fourth Sunday of Advent beautifully encapsulates the essence of this sacred season: promise, hope, restoration, repentance, transformation, and joy. These powerful themes do not emerge from the halls of mighty rulers or material wealth. Rather, they spring forth from the hearts of simple and humble individuals like Mary and Elizabeth, as well as from seemingly insignificant places such as Bethlehem and Judea. It is through these ordinary people and locations that the fulfillment of God’s promise is revealed.
In a world often captivated by the image of the “strong man,” wielding power and ambition, God chooses a different path—one that surprises and transforms. He selects the weak and humble to bring forth profound change: transformation, hope, restoration, and new
God’s surprising ways
life. Who are these ordinary individuals? They are us. We are called to recognize our capacity to effect positive change within our communities, bringing hope and light to those around us.
Through our collective efforts and our parish family, we can be instruments of God’s hope in a world that desperately needs it.
Consider Elizabeth and Mary, who were filled with awe at how God worked in their lives. Overwhelmed by His presence in their humble circumstances, they were reminded that God often chooses the lowly to accomplish His great works.
Even the unborn John the Baptist leaped for joy at Mary’s visit, a profound testament to the immense and abiding presence of God.
As we move closer to Christmas, let us envision ourselves in this same light. How might God use us to reveal His power and presence in our world? This season should be a time when we deeply experience the presence of God and the transformative power of
the Holy Spirit in our lives. It is a time to radiate love, reconciliation, peace, and unity in our homes, families, and friendships. Let us awaken our minds and hearts to appreciate how God has used our unique talents and skills to bring about positive change in our communities and society. Each of us has a personal calling—a beautiful and powerful gift that can inspire hope and joy in those around us. This Advent and Christmas, let us take time to celebrate not only the birth of our Savior but also our successes and achievements in serving Him. Together, let’s embrace the extraordinary ways God is moving in our lives and our communities. In Christ’s love, Fr. College credit for real-world experience
RECENTLY, Governor Newsom unveiled the framework for California’s final Master Plan for Career Education. The plan will help Californians, especially veterans, earn college credit for real-world experience, strengthen career pathways and eliminate degree requirements for nearly 30,000 state jobs, with a goal to double that number. Credit for prior learning can allow students to benefit from skills and knowledge gained outside the classroom, giving them a jumpstart on completing their degree and entering the workforce.
California’s 116 community colleges play a pivotal role in this plan which aims to provide at least 250,000 students with college credits for certain kinds of work experience and offer more than 200+ high quality career education programs. These programs provide affordable, hands-on training taught by industry experts who have worked in their respective fields of study.
In response to the Master Plan for Career Education, California Community Colleges Chancellor Sonya Christian said: “Learning is learning – whether it occurs in the classroom or outside the classroom. Credit for Prior Learning, a cornerstone of Vision 2030, creates new opportunities for veterans and working learners by recognizing their valuable skills and experiences with college credit. This investment advances educational opportunity, accelerates career pathways and
strengthens economic mobility for all Californians.”

Gary Valenciano to stage ‘Pure Energy’ concert...
Angeli Valenciano, who added that their kids will also be performing with their dad. Gary will also be performing a medley of movie theme songs like the “Moved” suite with “ Narito ” and “Reachin’ Out.”
Despite medical/health challenges, including a 45year struggle with Type 1 Diabetes, coupled with the
resolve to make things a little “mellow” when he turns 60, “Mr. Pure Energy” does not seem to slow down.
Next year, Gary will be back onstage in July for the musical “Joseph the Dreamer,” but will essay the role of Jacob this time around - and where he’ll be singing a symphony of praise in the midst of relevance.
Directed by Paolo
Valenciano, with Mon Faustino as musical director, “Pure Energy: One More Time,” the concert series, unfolds on December 20 and 22 in Araneta Coliseum. The almost three-hour show promises to bring back reminiscence and nostalgia. Tickets are available at ticketnet.com.ph. Proceeds from this show will benefit the Shining Light Foundation.

Bienvenido Tantoco III, Chairman of the TOYM
foundation, underscored that this year’s awardees have reached “high levels” in their respective fields.
“When I compare winners from the past and the ones today, I see a few differences. In the past, which was maybe a more linear and binary world, it was enough to be excellent in one chosen field. The winners of this year have reached high levels of mastery include sometimes three chosen fields that on the surface look like
these fields have no logical relationship with one another,” he said.
“With that, they need our encouragement to stay on their path. They need an extra boost to continue to be on purpose and also on character,” the chairman added.
Since its inception in 1959, TOYM annually honors Filipinos between the ages of 18 and 40 who have made significant contributions to their field and community.

MANILA — Kim Chiu has taken on varied roles on the small and big screens.
Recently, however, the Kapamilya star has accepted another role, which is the Tanduay Calendar Girl for 2025, and never passed up the chance to be one.
As the face of the brand, Kim represents a woman who is confident, empowered, resilient and strong.
Looking back on the time she won the hearts of everyone as a teen aspiring star to moments she learned the ropes of acting and performing, and proving herself in challenging and mature projects, Kim has come a long way as an actress and as a celebrity.
“I was shocked and I asked myself (then) if I was ready to do this,” recalled the actress-TV host when first she got wind of being tapped as the Tanduay Calendar Girl 2025 in a recent eventcum-press conference for this development in her career. “A lot of people have known me since (my) ‘Pinoy Big Brother’ stint and I grew up in front of everyone’s eyes, not everyone, but maybe most of the people. They’ve known me. And I think it’s about time also for me to do this.” She added that she feels “empowered” with this project
and “grateful.”
“I feel like this is just a powerful moment for me and this is a milestone I never thought of early in my career days. But I believe this is a testament to how much I’ve grown and how far I’ve come, not only as an artist and as an individual, but especially as a woman.”
The event’s theme was “aura” and complemented what a Tanduay Calendar Girl has been symbolizing, such as beauty, confidence, strength and inspiration, according to a piece of information given to this paper.
For Kim, the word “aura” is a celebration of authenticity and individuality.
“I think kasi we all have different types of beauty, we all have different types of confidence, and lahat naman tayo, we all have our own struggles that we hide and it exudes sa confidence natin (aura is shown in our confidence),” said she, adding that being resilient is part of it.
“No matter what life throws at you and you end up standing up, so, I’m here despite all the challenges that I’ve faced, I’m here in front of everyone, smiling, standing as your Tanduay Calendar Girl,” shared she. “So, it was one of those things that I never thought I would be doing in my career, that’s why this is such a big step for me and I’m proud to
be here in front of you. That’s my aura, strong
Asked how she prepared for being the Tanduay Calendar Girl 2025 and the photo shoots that came with it, Kim answered, “Paano naghanda (how did I prepare for it)? Actually, if you follow me on my Instagram account, (you’ll see that) I always work out, parang physically endorphin siya (somehow, I consider working out like endorphins, as mood boosters). It makes me happy and it pumps up my day.”
Aside from the physical preparation to look fit and healthy, Kim said she had to be mentally ready, to represent a woman’s confidence, as one may add, in the outfits she wore as a calendar girl.
“Lalo na yung pictorial namin, yung first suot ko nung damit na yung blue (especially in the pictorial like the blue outfit), oh my god, ‘Am I really doing this?’
‘Am I a woman now?” she said.
“So, more than physical, I really prepared (my mind and did) mental readiness if I (was) really ready to do (it), but I was very much ready, and here I am now, with all these pictures and all.” She added that she was very happy “with the outcome, and how it went,” and Kim was simply thankful for the trust that has been given to her.
