REPUBLICAN presidential candidate Donald Trump on Monday, Dec. 7, called for a ban on all Muslims entering the United States. “Until we are able to determine and understand this problem and the dangerous threat it poses, our country cannot be the victims of horrendous attacks by people that believe only in jihad, and have no sense of reason or respect for human life,” Trump said in a statement. A campaign press release cited an online poll from the controversial Center for Security Policy, which claimed that 25 percent of Muslims living in the United States believe violence Americans is justified as part of a global jihadist campaign. The organization is run by a man named Frank Gaffney who is identified as an anti-Muslim extremist by the Southern Poverty Law Center, The Washington Post reported. In reading a press release announcing the immigration proposal in South Carolina, Trump said it was “common sense” and that

NBI: Ranking execs may be tagged in tanim-bala by Ghio

MANILA – Senior officials and security personnel at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) may face charges in connection with the bullet-planting scam. National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) Director Virgilio Mendez on Monday, Dec. 7 revealed some ranking officers who were on duty when bullet-planting cas-

es occurred could be charged. The involvement of the officials was a trend the NBI saw in the course of its probe, he said. The bullet-planting or tanimbala extortion scheme involves NAIA security officials and personnel demanding money from a passenger in exchange for dropping criminal charges for possession of a bullet. Public outrage prompted the NBI to step into the probe while airport authorities continued its

investigation that led to the suspension and dismissal of some personnel from the office of Transportation Security (oTS), the agency principally blamed for the irregularity. Mendez said the NBI would recommend charging the officers involved in the scheme, and they are awaiting the go signal from the Department of Justice. “Let’s just wait for the final disposition of the case by the De-

CALIFoRNIA Governor Jerry Brown is calling for action on the part of the federal government, pushing for stronger gun laws and vigilance against potential terrorist threats. Speaking from the convention center in Paris on Monday, Dec. 7, where he is attending the United Nations Climate Change Conference, Brown told CNN, “People are concerned. And I myself want to make sure that the federal government is vetting these individuals, and not just refugees, but we have to be able to take measures to protect the people of this country.” The governor’s comments came in the wake of last week’s shooting rampage in San Bernardino, California, where 14 people were killed by a pair of radicalized attackers at the Inland Regional Center. The massacre is being called the deadliest in the US since 2012, when 20 children and six adults were gunned

SEN. Grace Poe’s big pre-election fight has reached the Supreme Court (SC). Rizalito David – a radio commentator who sought to nullify Poe’s win in the 2013 elections over citizenship and residency issues – on Tuesday, Dec. 8 filed a petition for certiorari contesting the ruling of the Senate Electoral Tribunal to dismiss his case. David had filed a quo warranto petition with the tribunal, which ruled 5-4 in Poe’s favor. He argued that Poe did not meet the constitutional requirement on citizenship and residency when she ran for senator and emerged as the topnotcher in 2013. Being a foundling with no known biological Filipino parents, Poe could not claim being a naturalborn citizen, David said. He withdrew the residency issue during the pretrial stage. All three justice-members of the electoral tribunal voted to affirm David’s arguments. All five tribunal members who voted to dismiss the petition were Poe’s colleagues in the Senate. In his latest petition, David assailed the Senate Electoral Tribunal’s majority decision declaring Poe a natural-born citizen “despite the absence of proof of blood ties to a Filipino father or mother.” He also questioned Poe’s reacquisition of her Philippine citizenship. “Clearly, the [tribunal’s] majority misinterpreted

TUESDAY, Dec. 8 marked the beginning of an important year in the Catholic Church--the beginning of the Year of Mercy, a special holy year for Catholics. Pope Francis opened the Holy Door at St. Peter’s Basilica on Tuesday morning, officially launching the yearlong celebration of mercy, compassion and forgiveness for Catholics around the world. Francis stood in prayer before the great bronze doors leading into the Basilica, the largest Catholic Church in the world, before pushing them open and walking through its entrance. He is the first of an estimated 10 million faithful who will pass through the doors over the course of the next year, in a rite of holy pilgrimage that dates back centuries, reported The Associated Press. Francis’ aging predecessor, Benedict XVI, followed the Pope through the giant doors into the Basilica. In a solemn, gloomy day Mass attend-

ed by thousands gathered in St. Peter’s Square at the Vatican, the pontiff celebrated the feast of the Immaculate Conception, celebrating the birth of Mary, the mother of Jesus. He also praised the work of the Second Vatican Council, saying that the newly-begun Jubilee Year “compels us not to neglect the spirit which emerged.” The Eucharistic celebration Tuesday was opened with readings of excerpts from the Vatican II’s four constitutions and its documents on ecumenism and religious liberty. In his homily, Francis said the Council documents “verify the great advance in faith” made at the event, said National Catholic Reporter. “How much wrong we do to God and His grace when we speak of sins being punished by his judgment before we speak of their being forgiven by His mercy,” Pope Francis told an estimated 50,000 people in attendance. “We have to put mercy before judgment, and in any event God’s judgment will always be in the light of His mercy.”

and 21 injured. The terrorists--a Muslim husband and wife, who were killed in a shootout with police hours after the attack-were “radicalized, embracing a perverted interpretation of Islam that calls for war against America and the West.” “We cannot turn against one another by letting this fight be defined as a war between America and Islam. ISIL does not speak for Islam. They are…part of a cult of death, and they account for a tiny fraction of more than a billion Muslims around the world,” Obama said, emphasizing that the US is not involved in a war on religion. “We must enlist Muslim communities as some of our strongest allies, rather than push them away through suspicion and hate.” In his speech, the president also laid out his administration’s strategy for combating terror: deploying Special Operations Forces, sending proper training and equipment to freedom fighters in Iraq and Syria, launching heavy airstrikes on

oil tankers (which provide extremist groups with much of their revenue), high intelligence-sharing with European allies, and Secretary of State John Kerry’s “Vienna process” plan to halt the civil war in Syria, so that all parties can focus on a common enemy, according to the New York Times. “The threat from terrorism is real, but we will overcome it. We will destroy ISIL and any other organization that tries to harm us. Our success won’t depend on tough talk, or abandoning our values, or giving into fear. That’s what groups like ISIL are hoping for. Instead, we will prevail by being strong and smart, resilient and relentless, and by drawing upon every aspect of American power,” Obama said. In an impassioned plea, he urged Congress’ action to ensure that any potential suspects who are on the nation’s no-fly list are not able to buy a gun. “What could possibly be the argument for allowing a terrorist suspect to buy a semi-automatic weapon? This is a matter of na-

tional security,” he stated. “We need to make it harder for people to buy powerful assault weapons like the ones that were used in San Bernardino.” A day after the president’s speech, the FBI also announced that the attackers were radicalized, and “had been for quite some time,” according to ABC News. Officials had found a stockpile of assault weapons, ammunition, and pipe bombs in their Redlands home. The FBI has not determined whether the attack was directed by a terrorist organization overseas, but are investigating it as an act of terrorism. “We do not see any evidence so far of a plot outside the continental US,” said David Bowdich, the assistant director of the Los Angeles bureau of the FBI. “We may find it someday, we may not, we don’t know. But right now we’re looking at these two individuals and beginning to focus on building it out from there. We will get to the bottom of this. We don’t know everything yet, but we will

Duterte goes to Comelec to ‘reaffirm’…

PAGE A1 t

Duterte, accompanied by his running mate Alan Peter Cayetano, checked the validity of his certificate of candidacy (COC) at the Comelec law department. “There have been a lot of issues (being brought up against my COC). So once and for all I’ve decided to go to the Comelec to ask if the papers and documents I submitted were OK. If not, I told them to just disqualify me, if my papers don’t follow the procedure,” Duterte told reporters. Duterte’s camp initially planned to have him file a new COC to correct possible defects in the one he submitted through a representative on Nov. 27. “I was told that my papers were OK, no need to correct or attach new documents,” he said, adding that he reaffirmed only the contents of the first COC he had filed. But Duterte said he wouldn’t mind the Comelec disqualifying him if its decision was based on a “legal reason.” He said he was not worried about the outcome of the disqualification case filed against

him by broadcaster Ruben Castor as he would accept any decision of the Comelec first division on the case. “I will not lose sleep because I’m not the President. I won’t die if I don’t become President,” he told reporters. In his petition, Castor claimed “there is clearly no candidate for President who is withdrawing his candidacy for the same position of President; that there is none that respondent Duterte may substitute.” Duterte initially filed his COC for reelection in Davao City, but eventually withdrew it and named his daughter Sara as his substitute. At the period of filing of the COC in October, Duterte repeatedly said he was not interested in seeking a national post despite a clamor from his supporters. However, he changed his mind recently after the Senate Electoral Tribunal ruled that Sen. Grace Poe, who is also running for President, was a natural-born Filipino and therefore should not be unseated as a lawmaker. “At this time the water has

passed under the bridge. It has come to pass that I really did file my COC. So any reason would be a good reason at this time,” Duterte said. Vitaliano Aguirre, the lead counsel of Duterte, said the possibility that the mayor would be disqualified due to a clerical error on his COC was no longer a problem. “We have perfected the certificate of candidacy and the clerical error was no longer a problem. The remaining legal case is the one filed by a certain Ruben Pastor,” Aguirre told the Inquirer on the sidelines of Duterte’s appearance at the Comelec yesterday. Aguirre said the Duterte camp had asked the Comelec law department about any additional requirements to ensure the correctness of the COC. “We have been assured that everything is complete and there’s nothing more we need for the COC,” he said. He said there was no legal reason for Duterte to show up at the Comelec, but on the request of the PDP-Laban president, Sen. Koko Pimentel, the mayor had agreed to appear. n

the Constitution, the laws, procedural rules and jurisprudence in giving effect to non-binding international [laws] and in acknowledging the flawed theory of citizenship by legal fiction,” David said in a statement. He criticized the tribunal’s majority for allegedly voting based on “personal and or political considerations” in violation of the Lerias doctrine, in which judges were reminded to rule on cases as judges, not as politicians. Those who voted in Poe’s favor were Senators Vicente Sotto 3rd, Loren Legarda, Cynthia Villar, Pia Cayetano and Paolo Benigno Aquino 4th.

Sotto is running for reelection under Poe’s ticket and had served as the spokesman for the senator’s father, Fernando Poe Jr., in the 2004 elections while Legarda was the elder Poe’s running mate. Villar is the wife of former Senate president Manuel Villar, leader of the Nacionalista Party, which had earlier entertained the idea to adopt Poe as its standardbearer. Those who voted for the petition were SC Associate Justices Antonio Carpio, Teresita Leonardo-de Castro and Arturo Brion and Sen. Nancy Binay, whose father, Vice President Jejomar Binay, is also running for Presi-

dent. Poe is still facing multiple disqualification cases with the Commission on Elections (Comelec) on the same grounds. The Comelec’s Second Division has approved the disqualification case filed by lawyer Estrella Elamparo and has ruled to cancel Poe’s certificate of candidacy for President. The case is under appeal. The First Division, meanwhile, is yet to issue its ruling on the three other cases filed by former senator Francisco Tatad, Dela Salle University professor and political analyst Antonio Contreras and former law dean Amado Valdez. n

He said the scheme was seen as just an opportunity for some officials to extort money. The NBI is set to submit its findings and recommendations before the DOJ. n

Thousands of police, Roman soldiers, and extra heightened security were also present in the square. A no-fly zone had been imposed on Rome’s skies, to protect pilgrims flocking to witness the celebration. Francis launched the 12-month Jubilee Year to emphasize the importance of mercy, healing and forgiveness to a church with a bad-rep for moralizing and

judgment. A Jubilee Year is defined by Dynamic Catholic as “when the Catholic Church across the world takes approximately a year to focus on forgiveness and healing in a special way…to help people grow spiritually, strengthen their faith, and encourage works of service, and to promote unity within the Catholic Church and society” as a whole.

Obama: ‘Threat from terrorism is real… PAGE A2 t

leave no stone unturned.” Congress to vote on restrictions for visa-free travel In his remarks, Obama also promised for stronger security screenings. Separately, some lawmakers have discussed looking at the K1 fiancée visa program, through which the female shooter Tashfeen Malik, came through US borders from Saudi Arabia after her marriage to Syed Rizwan Farook, the other shooter in the San Bernardino attacks. In a rare agreement, Congress and the White House are ready to combat terrorism with legislation that would slap on new, more secure travel restrictions on foreign visitors to the US who have recently been to Syria, Iraq, Iran or Sudan. The legislation has overwhelming wide bipartisan support and White House backing, said The Associated Press. The House measure, which was hammered out in private talks between the administration and leaders of Congress following the attacks in Paris last month, would ban visa-free entry of citizens from 38 countries, including most of Europe and several US allies in Asia, if they report on a travel application that they have visited any of the four targeted countries since 2011. The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) would also gather more detailed information from travelers about their past visits to countries like Syria and Iraq. The program currently allows eligible citizens of the 38 approved countries--including Belgium and France--to travel into the States without first obtaining a visa. Instead, this new measure would require people from those countries to apply for entry to the US through the traditional visa process. The measure would also

require all 38 countries that participate in the visa-waiver program to share traveler information with the US. In the past, some countries had been slow to provide such vital information, some officials complained. Under the bill, those countries could face elimination from the program if they fail to comply. Though the polls have shown a majority of Americans who also oppose the plan, officials such as CIA Director John Brennan to Sen. Richard Burr (R-NC), the chairman of the Senate Intelligence committee and California Democrat Sen. Diane Feinstein, the committee’s ranking member, are more worried that the visa waiver program is a greater concern in that it makes it much harder to keep track of potential terrorists and prevent attacks in the US. One potentially huge roadblock to passage of the visawaiver bill remains in the Senate, where Sen. Feinstein has pushed for even tougher restrictions added to the program. Under Feinstein’s proposal, which was drafted with Sen. Jeff Flake (R-Ariz.), first-time visitors who apply through the visawaiver program must undergo biometric fingerprint and photograph screening at US embassies or consulates in their home countries, rather than after they arrive to the US. A major difference between the House and Senate versions of the bill concerns which countries are affected. While the House bill also blocks visa-free travel for those who admit to visiting Iran and Sudan, with several exceptions for citizens involved with government or the military, Feinstein’s bill in the Senate restricts those who have gone to Syria and Iraq, and gives the DHS the ability to add countries to the restricted list, with no exceptions for any travelers. “Sen. Feinstein is encouraged by the consensus on strengthen-

ing the security of the visa-waiver program and will work with her colleagues to get something signed into law,” said a Feinstein aide. Critics of the Senate proposal say that overseas facilities are not staffed up to handle the expected onslaught of a potential thousands of visitors who would need extra prescreening. Some also argue that the new restrictions might create problems for innocent citizens, such as Iranian or Iraqi immigrants who have settled in Europe and visited their home countries in recent years. As the administration works to address such concerns, the DHS will also look at pilot programs for collecting biometric information, such as travelers’ fingerprints, the White House said in a statement. A task force in the House of Representatives is meeting to discuss details of the program, and hopes to craft legislation to pass “by the end of the year,” said House Majority Leader Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) last week. “The House bill’s more limited approach [would bring] thoughtful solutions that will enhance America’s security,” said US Travel Assn. President Roger Dow in a statement, also warning against “knee-jerk restrictions that could harm tourism to the US.” Around 20 million visitors a year--roughly 59 percent of all overseas visitors--travel on the current visa-waiver program, which grants 90-day stays in the US, and is vital to America’s tourism economy, says the travel association. The visa-waiver program changes are likely to be attached to a must-pass spending bill to fund federal operations in Congress, which is expected to have approved the bill by the end of the week to avoid a government shutdown. n

down at an elementary school in Connecticut. “My reaction is that the Legislature has been responsive on this whole matter of regulating and controlling the use of guns,” Brown said. “Now, when you do an initiative it tends to get more rigid.” He criticized lenient gun laws in neighboring states Nevada and Arizona, saying, “California has some of the toughest gun control laws of any state,” reported the Sacramento Bee. “It’s time for other states and for the federal government to catch up with California.” “We have among the strictest gun control regulations in the

country, and it doesn’t do us that much good if other states and the federal government is basically passive in this effort to keep guns out of the wrong hands.” The governor also accused several politicians of “demonizing” and “exploiting” the terrorism issue, calling out Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump for going “to a rather extreme level,” for his inflammatory comments about tracking Muslim Americans and restricting incoming Muslim immigrants entering the country. “That doesn’t mean we don’t have to be pretty intensive in our effort to ferret out these people who are developing these attitudes that then turn into mass

slaughter. I don’t have the full answer, but I wouldn’t be too complacent that we’ve got it right yet,” Brown said, according to the Los Angeles Times. “It’s a very different circumstance because we’ve never seen anything like it. It’s unprecedented and we’re going to have to take some…unprecedented steps to deal with it.” The governor expressed his desire for more collaboration at both the state and national government levels. He also said that the US government should ban gun purchases by people on the nofly list, siding with President Obama’s push for stronger na-

the nation has to do it. “These are people who are here, by the way,” he said, citing the poll. “These are people who only believe in jihad. They have no respect for human life,” he continued. In an earlier interview on Fox News, Trump said his proposal doesn’t apply to Muslims residing in the United States, “but we have to be vigilant.” Political leaders condemn Trump’s proposal Trump’s call to action has elicited backlash from a number of individuals, including rival presidential candidates and international leaders. However, he has defended his “reasonable precaution” by citing how Roosevelt classified Japanese, Germans and Italians in the United States as “enemy aliens” during World War II when he was president. “This is a president highly respected by all; he did the same thing,” Trump said, according to The New York Times. Just as America was at war in the 1940s, it is now “at war with radical Islam,” he said. “This is the kind of thing that people say when they have no experience and don’t know what they’re talking about,” said Republican presidential candidate

and New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie. “This is just more of the outrageous divisiveness that characterizes his every breath and another reason why he is entirely unsuited to lead the United States,” said Ohio Gov. John Kasich, also a Republican presidential candidate. Ben Rhodes, President Barack Obama’s deputy national security adviser, told CNN that Trump’s proposal is contrary to the values of Americans and to the nation’s security. “The fact of the matter is ISIL wants to frame this as a war between the United States and Islam, and if we look like we’re applying religious tests to who comes into this country, we’re sending a message that essentially we’re embracing that frame and that is going to make it very difficult to partner with Muslim communities here in the United States and around the world to prevent the scourge of radicalization that we should be focused on,” he said. In an address to the nation on Sunday, Dec. 6, Obama urged Americans to resist the temptation to discriminate. “It’s our responsibility to reject proposals that Muslim Americans should somehow be treated differently,” he said. “Because when we travel down that road,

we lose.” Democratic presidential candidate Sen. Bernie Sanders of Vermont also criticized Trump’s suggestion. “Demagogues throughout our history have attempted to divide us based on race, gender, sexual orientation or country of origin. Now, Trump and others want us to hate all Muslims. The United States is a great nation when we stand together. We are a weak nation when we allow racism and xenophobia to divide us,” he said in a statement. British Prime Minister David Cameron called Trump’s comments “divisive and unhelpful.” UK Independent Party leader Nigel Farage, who has previously said he agrees with some of Trump’s comments, said the candidate has gone too far, according to The Telegraph. “I think that Mr. Trump’s somewhat kneejerk reaction to this, saying that all Muslims should be banned from coming into America, was, perhaps for him, a political mistake too far.” The Council on AmericanIslamic Relations (CAIR) also criticized Trump’s remarks as un-American and unconstitutional. “It seems that Donald Trump is now channelling the worst of the worst of the Islamaphobia

ments for produce — chiefly the high-resolution testing — we believe that some of our local growers will not meet these enhanced standards,” Chipotle spokesman Chris Arnold told ABC News. “We’ll certainly look to work with suppliers that do, and to help others where we can, but at the moment, we aren’t sure what the local program will look like. What we are sure of is that our commitment to using the very best ingredients we can remains as strong as ever.” Many analysts say the brand’s signature appeal — fresh and quality ingredients (free of hormones, antibiotics and GMOs) — is now seen as a weakness. The company noted in its latest annual report that it uses “fresh produce and meats rather than frozen” and relies “on employees cooking with traditional methods rather than automation,” which could contribute to the higher risk of food-borne illness at its locations. “It strikes deeper at their brand because so much of their story is based on the quality of their ingredients,” Allen Adamson, a brand consultant and the former chairman of Landor North America, told Bloomberg. “This can clearly do long-term damage if they don’t get it under control.” Despite the measures taken in the nine affected states, this

week, more bad news came for the restaurant chain. On Tuesday, Dec. 8, Boston College announced that 80 students, including members of the basketball team, have complained of gastrointestinal symptoms after dining at a Chipotle over the weekend. Chipotle temporarily closed the location near campus on Monday, Dec. 7 as health officials investigated the location. “Health officials in Boston believe this is likely a norovirus, which seems consistent with the pattern, in our estimation,” Arnold said, according to NBC News. Boston College also said in a statement that all of the students “have been tested for both E. coli and the norovirus.” According to the CDC, some serious forms of the E. coli bacteria can cause diarrhea and other serious infections and illnesses. The bacteria are spread by oral contact with fecal matter. For the norovirus, some symptoms include stomach pain, nausea, diarrhea and vomiting. Chipotle, which has about 1,900 locations across the US, also faced E. coli, norovirus and salmonella outbreaks in Washington, California and Minnesota over the summer. As of press time on Tuesday, Chipotle shares fell by $9.98 (or 1.8 percent) to $541.77 by midday trading. (AJPress)

Global commitment RECENT climatic and environmental events warn that the world is doomed for disastrous consequences. The Philippines—who is among the countries that bear the brunt of this phenomenon—seeks adaptive measures that would strengthen livelihoods, food security and ecosystems. In his trip to Paris, France last week, Pres. Benigno Aquino III called for significant actions to address the challenge of climate change. He urged world leaders to arrive at a “fair consensus” that would help developing countries like the Philippines squarely confront the ruinous impact of climate change. During the 21st Conference of Parties (COP21), Aquino called for global security among heads of state and government, leaders from the private sector and civil society representatives, in addressing climate change saying every country must commit to reduce green house gas emissions and build resilient communities. “It is imperative that all countries do everything, and maximize what can be done to address climate change. Either we all strive and sacrifice, or we all lose to the cycle of destruction and reconstruction,” Aquino said. Aquino added that the economic costs of climate change amount to $44.9 billion annually for the Vulnerable 20 (V20) countries alone, which includes the Philippines. Inaction to this problem

will cost all affected nations even more, Aquino warned, as this number is set to grow almost 10-fold by 2030, bringing the total estimated amount up to $400 billion. Rising water levels brought by climate change threatens the existence of other island-nations such as Kiribati, Tuvalu, and the Maldives. Aquino said that the extinction of these islands would be certain, “unless we pursue realizable goals that acknowledge that, for some nations, the fight against climate change is a matter of survival.” People must understand how the world’s current practices exhaust many of the planet’s limits—leading to risks of damaging the ecosystem that is beyond repair. About 75 percent of disasters are caused by or related to weather. The world has reached a critical stage in its efforts to exercise responsible environmental stewardship. Despite intentions and some admirable actions done by notable organizations, unsustainable use of the world’s natural resources has left the degradation of the global environment unabated. ment and population growth, combined with the impacts of natural calamities have increased the risks. Environmental problems caused by impacts of human activities on resources is a phenomenon commonly known as climate change. As time goes by, the planet becomes more vulnerable. Its ability to ward off wastes and destructive effluent is growing thin. The planet has be-

come fragile, recent catastrophic events should be enough emphasis for nations to change their ways to make this planet a safer place. While we cannot undo the damages done, we are still capable of learning from recent climate change incidents and decelerating the rate of change to produce a desirable future for the planet altogether. Do you agree with Trump’s call to ban Muslims from entering the US? Donald Trump once again shook the nation with yet another plan to purportedly keep America safe following the San Bernardino massacre that killed 14 people and injured 21 others. The Republican presidential frontrunner wants a total shutdown of all Muslims entering America — whether they are immigrants or tourists. While Trump’s fans cheered when he made the announcement on Monday, Dec. 7, many were outraged, even among members of the Republican Party. Recent investigations revealed that the perpetrators of the San Bernardino shooting were radicalized, drawing inspiration from the ideology of extremist group ISIS. As he himself announced on television, “Donald Trump is calling for a total and complete shutdown of Muslims entering the United States until

our country’s representatives can figure out what the hell is The Fil-Am going on.” This proposal excludes Mus- Perspective lims who are already living in the US and those who serve in the US military. The Filipino Channel’s daily newscast “Balitang America” Gel SantoS-reloS reported on the reactions from individuals on either side of the political spectrum, who are against Trump’s proposal. White House Press Secretary Josh Earnest challenged the Republican Party to denounce Donald Trump, and said this proposal disqualifies him from serving the country as president. “What was proposed yesterday is not what this party stands for,” Republican House Speaker

Paul Ryan said, contending that Trump’s statement is in violation of the Constitution. Presidential candidate and former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush called Trump “unhinged”. New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, another presidential candidate, criticized Trump, saying his comments clearly show the frontrunner does not have the experience to be president. Meanwhile, Senator Lindsey Graham said it is time for all Republicans to unite against Trump. On “Balitang America,” I interviewed Abu Qadir Al-Amin to get his reaction to Trump’s plan. Located in the Excelsior District of San Francisco, which has the highest concentration of Filipinos in the city, the Center is where many Filipino Mus-

lims go to pray. While the Imam categorically stated that America is not and should not be at war with ALL Muslims, he said they choose not to respond to Trump, and just live by the very essence of the Muslim faith: to live in peace. This is also the message kababayans in the Philippines want to spread through an art exhibit that they staged, in order to shine a positive light on the stories and contributions of Filipino Muslims. May angal, Circa 2015

IN April 2010, towards the end of the Street term of President Gloria Macapagal-Ar- Talk royo, I wrote a biting piece entitled, “May Angal???” I wrote it out of sheer frustration over the abuses of the GreG B. MacaBenta Arroyo administration that we, as citizens, could only helplessly protest. Here’s how that piece read: “If you grew up in the streets and had to deal with a bully, you may recall having been told this to your face: May angal? Literally: Any complaints? If the bully was much bigger than you, and especially if he had other toughies backing him up, you simply swallowed your pride, meekly shook your head, and took whatever abuse was heaped on you. “Your only recourse was to weep in self-pity and complain to the heavens about your fate. If you were the type with some measure of braggadocio, you told your friends that you didn’t have the heart to embarrass the bully or you didn’t want to dignify his lack of manners. But deep inside you, you felt really puny, impotent, and helpless. And ashamed of yourself for not fighting back. “In this country, which has deteriorated into one governed, not by laws but by people wielding raw power, we are being bullied and told to our faces: May angal??? “We make a lot of noises, organize marches, sign petitions, hold up placards, write letters to the media, threaten to go to court, and curse the bullies to high heavens. But after so much sound and fury, the bullies in government still get away with their abuses. In fact, in a literal sense, they get away with murder.” That was the situation then. And that still seems to be the case now, even as the tenure of President Benigno S. Aquino III nears its end. At least, at one point, Arroyo said, “I-am-sorry…”, no matter that she obviously did not mean it and that she

promptly took it back. But Aquino’s self-righteousness appears to be cast in stone. He seems to be a staunch believer in that kiddie taunt, “Sticks and stones may break my bones but names will never hurt me!” In the face of protests and accusations – even being told to his face that he lied - he has brazened it and, in effect, has shot back: May angal? Thousands of victims of super typhoon Yolanda are still living in pitiful conditions in Leyte, two years after the tragedy, and yet P10.28 Billion in rehabilitation funds have not been released by the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) and nearly P4.5 Billion in quick response funds allocated to various national government agencies have remained idle – a clear case of government incompetence and insensitivity. Aquino himself did not even bother to show up in Tacloban for the second year’s commemoration of the disaster, choosing instead to attend the wedding of a taipan’s son. And who can forget how, amidst the death and destruction, Aquino and Mar Roxas, then Interior Secretary, made the most heartless remarks ever mouthed by national leaders? “Buhay ka pa naman, hindi ba?”(You’re still alive, aren’t you?) and “Bahala na kayo sa buhay niyo!” (Loosely: You’re on your own!) May angal??? Some P10 Billion in public funds were spent, thousands of Metro Manilans were made to suffer monstrous inconveniences, businesses had to bear massive financial losses and, in effect, the entire country was swept under the rug, along with the filth of the metropolis, in order to present an impressive façade to the delegates of the APEC summit. In the aftermath, with a straight face, Aquino claimed credit for a “successful” summit, making the inconveniences and financial losses “worthwhile.” Meanwhile, Metro Manila promptly has

returned to “normal” with its shanties, vagrants and horrible traffic. May angal??? Forty-four members of the Philippine National Police (PNP) Special Action Force were slaughtered in Mamasapano, in an operation in which Aquino clearly had a direct hand.. Worse yet, when the remains of the troopers were flown to Manila, Aquino did not bother to honor them with his presence. He preferred, instead, to attend the inauguration of a Mitsubishi facility in nearby Laguna. Former President Fidel V. Ramos was also at that event but left early to meet the SAF remains, along with Vice-President Jejomar Binay. Ignoring the facts, Aquino has stubbornly refused to acknowledge command responsibility for the tragedy, choosing to blame others, including suspended PNP Chief Alan Purisima, for having “misled” him. And yet it was Aquino who had gotten Purisima involved in the operation, in spite of the latter’s suspension. In his last State of the Nation Address, Aquino made no mention of the Fallen 44 and, to this day, their families’ cries for justice have been in vain. May angal??? Sen. Grace Poe-Llamanzares fudged her birth, residency and citizenship records en route to the Senate and, she hopes, the presidency. Three Associate Justices of the Supreme Court, sitting in the Senate Electoral Tribunal, wrote incisive positions against Poe’s claim to being a natural-born Filipino citizen, but five other members of the SET – Senators Pia Cayetano, Cynthia Villar, Tito Sotto, Bam Aquino and Loren Legarda – ignored the Justices’ arguments, as well as their Constitutional underpinnings, in the name of political expediency.. May angal??? The Department of Transportation & Communication (DOTC), once headed by Liberal Party presidential standard bearer, Mar Roxas, and now by LP Acting President Joseph Emilio Aguinaldo Abaya, has been a glaring example of government incompetence and insensitivity. In spite of the daily torment that

THE bullet-planting or tanim-bala extortion scheme involves NAIA security officials and personnel demanding money from a passenger in exchange for dropping criminal charges for possession of a bullet. Rudy Santos/Philstar.com/File

commuters have to suffer in taking the MRT and LRT, the congestion at the country’s airports, the frequent sea mishaps due to lax government oversight, and the infernal traffic made worse by the delayed implementation of infrastructure projects, Aquino has shown no intention of replacing Abaya. “It’s not fatal!” was how Abaya described the traffic situation, while Roxas called it “a sign of economic progress.” May angal??? Hundreds of travellers have reportedly been victimized by extortionists manning the security process at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport. The incidents have been bannered in the international media, further eroding the already tarnished image of the country’s principal airport. Instead of vowing to immediately get to the bottom of the problem, the government responded like a bunch of kids caught with their hands in the cookie jar. President Aquino dismissed the incidents as having been “blown out of proportion by media,” Secretary Abaya

cited figures to show that the affected passengers constituted an insignificant percentage of total travellers, and Manila International Airport Authority (MIAA) General Manager Jose Angel Honrado disclaimed any accountability because, according to him, his function is simply to “coordinate” airport activities. Meanwhile, the mysterious single bullet appearance in the bags of departing passengers continues and a new “profit center” has been devised at the NAIA: an “escort service” to guarantee hassle-free departures. May angal??? The good news is that the Aquino administration will soon make its exit and the citizenry will have a chance to choose a new set of leaders with more competence and compassion than the ones in power. The bad news, however, is that our cherished hopes could be dashed by gold, goons and an automated version of Garci. May angal??? (gregmacabenta@hotmail.com)’

Palace suspends Cebu City mayor by aurea

calica Philstar.com

MANILA – Malacañang has suspended Cebu City Mayor Michael Rama for 60 days for alleged violation of the Constitution, grave abuse of authority, grave misconduct and oppression in connection with a demolition he ordered last year. Rama is a member of the United Nationalist Alliance (UNA) of presidential aspirant Vice President Jejomar Binay. The suspension order was signed by Executive Secretary Paquito Ochoa Jr. on Dec. 2, a source from the Palace said.

In October last year, the Office of the President ordered Rama to submit his answer to the complaint filed by Labangon barangay chairman Victor Buendia in relation to the alleged unlawful demolition of the village’s center island and street lighting project along Katipunan street. Based on the complaint, it was Rama who instructed the members of the city hall’s prevention restoration, order, beautification and enhancement team headed by Raquel Arce to demolish the project. Buendia claimed that the P300,000 center island and street

lighting project had the permission of the mayor himself even before it was constructed. Rama is facing two administrative cases before the Office of the President, including the one filed by lawyer Reymelio Delute in connection with the granting of P20,000 calamity aid to each of the 4,200 officials and employees of the city last December. State auditors had declared that the granting of the calamity assistance was highly irregular. Rama left the Liberal Party in 2012 to join UNA. He is a cousin of movie actress Annabelle Rama. n

The changing retirement landscape: what to know now PREVIOUS generations of Americans were able to retire with confidence, knowing that they could count on a steady stream of income from what is often referred to as the “threelegged stool” of company pensions, social security and personal savings. Today, for most workers, the retirement landscape is different: the availability of traditional pensions has plummeted, wage stagnation has dampened how much middle-income savers can set aside, and the level at which Social Security can play a substantial source of future retirement income is in flux. And now experts are warning that many insurance products that replicate the “paycheck for life” provided by traditional pensions are becoming at risk in this new world. Especially threatened, say retirement specialists, are annuities, which have traditionally offered guaranteed lifetime income no matter what

happens in the markets. “For millions of Americans with moderate incomes, such guarantees are increasingly necessary to help them prepare for a financially stable retirement that could span several decades,” said Helene Rayder, vice president at Lincoln Financial Group. However, some retirement insurance experts are concerned that new regulations proposed by the US Department of Labor (DOL) intended to improve customer value by eliminating conflicts of interest between advisors and their clients, could hurt consumers instead. Rayder said the rules could potentially: • Make it economically unviable for commission-based financial advisors to serve average consumers, forcing individuals to work with more costly pay-based advisors. This will limit the financial advice many middle-class savers rely on today. • Reduce the choice of retire-

ment products savers have in planning, potentially eliminating middle-class savers from choosing commission-based accounts. • Deter financial planners from offering annuities, and as a result savers will pay more and get less over the long term. • Could cost families billions more instead of helping them save. A recent report published by Economists Incorporated says the cost could be as much as $80 billion nationwide. To learn more, visit Lincoln Financial Group’s page www. MyRetirementChoice.org, which provides information about the rule. “While well-intended, the rule’s one-size-fits-all approach will negatively impact middleclass savers,” said Rayder. “Americans can get involved by encouraging the DOL to change its rule, and ask their congressional representatives to make the same request of the Administration.” (StatePoint)

Megaworld sees Fort Bonifacio as PH BPO hub by iris

MANILA – Megaworld Corp., the Andrew Tan-led property giant, is optimistic about the prospects of Fort Bonifacio becoming the prime business process outsourcing (BPO) destination in the country. “We feel that Fort Bonifacio will continue to remain very strong in terms of office space, particularly BPO and office leasing,” Megaworld senior vice president Jericho Go told reporters Monday night. He said prices have appreciated significantly, with Megaworld continuing to exhibit strong growth in lease revenues. “The (price) range in Fort Bonifacio is P700 to P900 per square meter. We’re already in the P900 level (for office),” Go said. The company is on track to build an additional 100,000 square meters of gross leasable area in its portfolio next year. “That is the minimum,” he noted. He said Megaworld is the only

developer that has at least 130 tenants for its office space. “The biggest portion of leases comes from expansion not from new ones,” Go said. The company is building six office towers in its 34.5-hectare McKinley West township in the southern part of Fort Bonifacio. These are One West Campus, Two West Campus, Three West Campus, Five West Campus, Six

West Campus and Eight West Campus. The six towers will have a total of 60,000 square meters of office space, and will be part of the 350,000 square meter office space expansion of the property firm in the entire Fort Bonifacio in the next three years. S&P maintains 5.6% PH growth forecast by Mayvelin

U. Caraballo ManilaTimes.net

STANDARD & Poor’s Ratings Services (S&P) is maintaining its 2015 growth forecast for the Philippines at 5.6 percent, with the economy viewed as the strongest performer among its regional peers. A slight rise to 5.7 percent is expected for 2016, meanwhile, and the debt watcher warned that policy continuity could become an issue as the Aquino administration steps down next year. Both forecasts fall below the government’s 7 percent to 8 percent target and are also lower than last year’s actual growth of 6.1 percent. As of September, gross domestic product (GDP) growth averaged 5.6 percent. S&P described the Philippines as the strong performer in the

Association of Southeast Asian Nations-4 grouping that includes Indonesia, Malaysia and Thailand. “The Philippines remains the strong performer in this group, although there are concerns about policy continuity as President [Benigno] Aquino [3rd]’s term ends,” it said. The Asean-4 would see growth hold up better than the region’s so-called “tiger” economies, S&P said, but it is still not immune to external developments. The “tiger” economies that include Hong Kong, Singapore, South Korea and Taiwan will continue to be weighed down by slow trade growth, including onshoring of manufacturing by China. “Growth in this group will continue to struggle. GDP growth in this group will reach just 2 per-

cent with only a modest recovery in the next two years, with growth remaining below 3 percent,” S&P said. For the whole Asia-Pacific region, S&P said it continued expect relatively sluggish growth of 5.3 percent for 2015 and 2016 and 5.2 percent for 2017. “Moreover, we see a steadily narrowing gap between the developed markets and the emerging markets as the latter have tended to slow more quickly,” it said. China will still lead Asia-Pacific growth next year and the region will continue to outperform the rest of the global economy, S&P said. The region, however, will have to adapt to developments to ensure relatively strong, balanced, and sustainable growth, it noted. n

Safe decorating is another perfect gift for the holidays CHRISTMAS trees are the divas of holiday decorations. They are often the center of attention and they are very high maintenance. They also can be very dangerous. Two reminders of this occurred in less than a week last January when a fire that followed a Christmas tree being ignited by a candle destroyed a home in Azusa and a blaze fed by an aging, brittle tree demolished a North Hollywood home. Though three firefighters were injured in North Hollywood, it could have been worse. To help prevent accidents, Southern California Edison reminds its customers that nothing is more important than safety when putting up and maintaining their decorations this holiday season. “Christmas tree fires can be explosive and fill a room with choking smoke and heat very quickly,” said Paul Jeske, SCE director of Corporate Health and Safety. “For safety, live trees

should be watered daily and artificial trees should be fire resistant, and they must be kept at least three feet away from heat sources like space heaters and candles. They also should never be decorated with worn light stands or broken bulbs.” Christmas tree fires, while not very frequent, are usually serious. U.S. fire departments respond to about 210 home fires annually because of the trees that cause an average of seven deaths, 19 injuries and $17.5 million in damage. Home Christmas tree fires are five times more likely to end in a death compared to home fires not involving trees. One-third of Christmas tree fires result from electrical issues. Meanwhile, power lines should be a major concern when decorating outdoors. Lights or decorations should never be installed on them or utility poles and decorators should stay at least 10 feet away from power lines. SCE recommends some other

safety tips for the holidays: • Use wooden or fiberglass ladders when decorating outdoors. Metal ladders conduct electricity. Stay at least 10 feet away from overhead power lines when using ladders. • Keep lights directly away from carpeting, furniture, drapes and other flammable materials. • Be sure electrical cords are not placed at an angle or position that pinches them, like in windows. • Use plastic zip cords when hanging lights instead of staples, tacks or nails. • Use no more than three strands of lights per extension cord (or follow the manufacturer’s instructions). • Use only decorations bearing the (UL), (CSA) or (ETL) labels. • Always unplug decorative lights when leaving home or before going to bed. Debt Relief Atty. LAwrence yAng CLIENT is 53. She has two sons who are just entering college. She divorced ten years ago. Exhusband does not pay spousal or child support but left her with the community property residence. The house has a small equity. Not much. In plain language, exhusband, left her with two kids to raise all by herself, without giving her any spousal support or child support to help his family, left her with a mortgage to pay all by herself on a house with no equity. Dumped her with what really is his responsibility as head of the household, left her alone with their two children, and just started a new life on his own as if he was never married and had no responsibilities. Client struggled through the last 10 years by herself and raised two sons without a father. Then, the company she worked for downsized and she lost her $75K a year job. Unemployment benefits are hardly enough to make ends meet. So, client fell behind on house payments. It’s been nine months since she last made a mortgage payment. Her mortgage arrears are about $20K. She applied for a loan modification 6 months ago but was denied because she had no income. Two months ago, our God, the one true God, the God of Moses and Israel, El Elohim, whose beloved son, Jesus Christ died for our sins, because they both love us so, heard her prayers and blessed her with a job that paid $80K a year commensurate with her qualifications. With the new job, she resumed her mortgage payment last month but the bank refused to accept payment because of the large arrears. Banks may still accept payment if you are only one or two months behind; Perhaps, even a max of 3 months. But 9 months? No way

Single mom with conditional loan modification seeks chapter 13 relief to stop foreclosure

Jose! Client then proceeds to ask for a loan modification, which is granted with conditions. It’s the normal trial period of 3 months at the reduced mortgage payment that is $600 lower. Once the trial period is completed with timely payments, the conditions must be met. What are these conditions that client must meet? She has to remove all junior liens on her property. The IRS has a lien for $54K. The EDD has a lien for $10K. The HOA has a judgment lien for $17K. Firstly, an IRS cannot be removed even with a motion to avoid lien because IRS liens are not subject to lien cancellation. The only way to remove an IRS lien is to pay it in full, or make a deal with the IRS that allows client to remove the lien just so she can comply with the condition of her loan modification; fat chance of that happening. You know the IRS will garnish your social security for unpaid taxes, so why in this world will the IRS release client’s lien when she now makes $80K annually? This is like asking Donald Trump to be sensitive to minorities and disabled people. It’s not happening in anyone’s lifetime. Secondly, after the IRS there are two more liens for $27K. Where is client going to get $81K to pay off her three junior liens to comply with the loan modification conditions? Therefore, the loan modification conditions are outright RIDICULOUS. Client cannot meet these conditions even at her current pay of $80K a year. Client chooses the only feasible option left. She seeks Chapter 13 relief and will file a motion for court permission to finalize the loan modification in her Chapter 13. This case will allow her to object to the IRS claim of $54K and trim it down to size. She says that

she only owes the IRS $25K because she already paid half of the claim by wage garnishment over the years. With an objection to claim, the judge can rule on how much she really owes to the IRS. She says she only owes the EDD $4K, also, because of previous wage garnishments. Further she says that the HOA only accepted a minimum of $1,000 a month to pay the $17K HOA judgment. In the Chapter 13, she can pay the $17K HOA judgment lien at $284 a month over 60 months. That’s a big relief. Despite the temporary loan modification with ridiculous conditions, the enemy is still banging on client’s door. Bank has set the foreclosure sale of her residence for December! Chapter 13 will stop the foreclosure on its track, allow her to pay the arrears of $20K at $350 a month, pay off the IRS, the EDD and the HOA over 60 months, and with God’s help, allow client to finalize the loan modification in the Chapter 13. After 5 years, her two sons will be done with college and gainfully employed; then they can both help out their mom who raised them against all odds. If the bank sees that all the liens are being paid in full in the Chapter 13 plan, that’s a good faith effort to remove all the liens. So, the bank may continue to finalize her loan modification. “I have set the Lord always before me. Because He is at my right hand, i will not be shaken.” — Psalm 16:8.

Immigrant Living: 101 and Beyond Monette AdevA MAglAyA “REMEMBER the Wonder” was a catchy TV ad slogan from Wonder Bread before it abandoned California for another state. But the phrase can very well be used to refer to the true season of wonder — CHRISTMAS. December days and nights seem to slip from our grasp like fine grains of sand. The hours seem to hurtle through the day as we complete a year’s cycle and move on to the next. Many of us, particularly the women, try in earnest to mesh the unusually heavy demands of the roles we play in our lives specially this season. If we get completely sidetracked by the minutiae and the methodology, the expenses and the endless activities of what constitutes Christmas, we are more than likely to morph into the likes of Ebenezer Scrooge and be tempted to say “Bah, humbug!” But unlike the tightwad Scrooge, the cost of doing Christmas has little to do with it. More than likely, the heaviness and

Once more with feeling … Remembering the Wonder “Love your life but without conceit. It is simply on loan to you.” drudgery that we seem to associate with this season have a lot to do with the failure to find that somewhat elusive sense of real joy that this season can bring in abundance to those who are open to it. Sure, we can go through the motions of Christmas activities, shopping, baking, decorating, partying, drinking and binging. And yet, very often even if we diligently check off all the things in our list, something remains amiss. We just don’t have that Christmas feeling. At the risk of sounding redundant, the spirit of the season is like a butterfly. If you keep mindlessly trashing about in endless activities, it will elude you but if you sit very still, that Christmas feeling might simply alight on you. Be still and soak in the sight, sounds and smells of the season. One trick I have learned is to simplify and not try to take on too much of anything, and that

includes refraining to max out my credit cards, no matter how infinitely tempting it is to rush out and join the shopping madness. Each day of the season, count at least one blessing that you may have taken for granted — like your family, dysfunctional or imperfect the members may be, including yourself, we are all we’ve got. To borrow from a song, “Love the one you’re with.” That means stop looking elsewhere. The internet has proven to be a minefield of dashed hopes and dreams. For the most part, it is definitely not the place to find what you think is missing in your life. If you still have relatively good health and do not have to depend on a cocktail of drugs to get you through the day, REJOICE AND BE GLAD! Many wealthy yet ailing people longing to live a bit longer, will trade places with you in a heartbeat. TAKE NOTHING

to potential foreign investors,” it said. Location-wise, the Philippines also has “competitive” property prices – ranking fourth lowest in the region – as against other Asean members. According to the report, the average property price per square meter in the Philippines stood at $3,156 – lower than Thailand’s $3,638 and Singapore’s $15,251. It is, however, higher than Cambodia ($2,913), Malaysia ($2,873) and Indonesia ($2,692). Foreign manufacturing investments to Asean totaled $41 billion in 2013, up 127.7 percent from $18 billion the previous year. In the Philippines, foreign direct investments (FDI) rose by a fifth to $4 billion during the period. By sector, the country cornered the bulk of manufacturing FDI in the “lower quality, lower cost” auto equipment and components as well as food, beverage and tobacco. “The challenge now is to move up to the higher quality and lower cost category,” the report said. Other challenges also persist.

In a forum marking the report’s launch, corporate officials highlighted avenues for improvement for the Philippines. Cornelio Mapa Jr., executive vice-president of Universal Robina Corp. said a favorable demographics is useless without the necessary skills set. Maria Carolina Dominguez, president of John Clements Consultants Inc., agreed. “We need to challenge information because we need to take decisions very quickly because information is everywhere and we need to be able to use them,” Dominguez said. For his part, George Manzano of the University of Asia and the Pacific said government support will need to be channeled toward better infrastructure and uniform regulations. “We need both soft connectivity and hard connectivity. On one hand, we need to have good regulations, that’s soft connectivity. On the other, we need hard connectivity which are the ports, airports and railways to connect to the system,” Manzano said. n

R.G. Manabat & Co., discussed the country’s prospects on the looming integration of the 10member Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean). On the positive side, the country’s young demographics could work on its favor as it lures back factories that will leave China and go to Asean for opportunities. Filipinos are among the youngest in the Asean, the report said, pointing out that productivity is highly determined by the presence of a large working force to man factories. “The English proficiency of Filipino workers is another advantage of the Philippines in the region,” it said. On the other hand, while the country has the second highest labor cost in Asean, next to Malaysia, KPMG said this is hardly a problem if coupled with high productivity. Cheap credit is also a factor, with the report taking note of the Philippines’ credit upgrades in recent years. “Such rating signals a good financial reputation

Barrister’s Corner Atty. Kenneth UrsUA reyes THERE are situations in both Divorce and Child Support cases where the Summons and Petition resulted to a default against one party for failing to respond on time. In certain situations, the defaulted party failed to respond on time because he or she did not even know that he or she was served with a Summons. This situation places the defaulted party in a precarious situation in that the first time the defaulted party usually becomes aware of

Relief from default in divorce cases the existence of the case is when the default child support judgment or divorce judgment is actually being enforced against the defaulted party. At this point, the party no longer has the right to participate or defend itself in the litigation. Based on my experience in practice, the defaulted party usually gets in this situation because they moved residences and the summons was served at the prior residence. Sometimes, the proof of service of summons is fraudulent or defective. Fortunately, relief is available for

SIPA Crew offers cost-free hip-hop dance & visual media arts classes to youth by Agnes

ConstAnte AJPress

ONE. Two. Three. Four. Five. Six. Seven. Eight. Standing before a wall lined with seven large mirror panels, Fil-Am Van Jovi Wong, 21, counts out loud while demonstrating a dance move called the wave./breaking down the moves involved in the wave. On the first count, he moves his wrist. At two, he lifts his elbow. At three, he accents his shoulder. Wong’s movement is choppy, resembling that of a robot, as he repeats the steps at a slow tempo. Then he speeds it up. One, two, three, four. This time, his wave is smooth with no interruptions. Behind Wong, eight other Fil-Am youth are quickly able to imitate the motion of his wave with a striking degree of precision. It’s the start of a dance class on a Wednesday afternoon at the Search to Involve Pilipino Americans (SIPA) building on Temple Street in Historic Filipinotown. Wong was teaching for the day as the group, called SIPA Crew, was in the process

of looking for an instructor to lead its Wednesday sessions. Now, Culture Shock LA, a nonprofit Hip-Hop dance organization, is providing instructors for those classes: YouTuber David Lee and Lila Frias, who was recently on America’s Got Talent, are teaching members of the SIPA dance group. SIPA Crew came to life in March 2013, with its first class held at the beginning of that month. Prior to that, SIPA’s former executive director, Joel Jacinto, was in talks with Bryan East, a dance instructor with Culture Shock LA, about how great it would be for SIPA to have Hip-Hop classes for youth. Jacinto then approached Joan Maranan, a long-time participant of SIPA programs, who helped in recruiting other youth into the program and is the group’s administrative captain. “Thus, SIPA provided the space, Bryan (via Culture Shock LA) provided the instruction, and Joan brought the youth,” Stephanie Van, counseling coordinator at SIPA, told the Asian Journal. The group has classes twice a week – Wednesday and Fri-

FOR GRANTED. Love your life but without conceit. It is simply on loan to you. Treasure the hours. Forcibly yank out just an hour each day to sit in the silence during this season to take the time to smell the coffee, steep the tea or quaff the cocoa in a quiet spot, free of the interruptions of all those annoying electronic beeps. Unless your job entails spelling the difference between life and death, cut off your electronic leash, at least for just an hour. Who said you have to be on call all the time? That hour you gift yourself with is yours to savor and JUST BE. That hour might very well help you to remember the wonder — to get back that gift of amazement we once had when we were children, before we became jaded, cynical souls. Lest we forget, CHRIST IS STILL THE REASON FOR THE SEASON. Pay no attention to the

godless fools who would like to delete Christ from the season. The strongest evidence of Christ living in our hearts during this season is an inner glow and outward manifestation of joy that wells within, overflows and like a heaven-sent viral infection affects those we work and live with within the orbit of our existence. Sorrow, pain and disappointment, heartache and heartbreak in spades — we will always have. They have a place in the general scheme of things. They work like a sculptor’s tool kit that shapes and molds the structure of resilient souls that can weather all seasons. But just for this season, BELIEVE that you are allowed to get a moratorium from all that. This season is filled with awesome wonders and all it takes is to open our eyes, sharpen our senses and soak them all in. We have become inured to the pos-

sibilities of joy each moment brings. Conditioned by years of mundane repetition, we have lost the magic and instinctive sense of wonder we were born with. We went through the motions of getting an education, raising a family, earning a living, running a business, working ceaselessly, it seems till we drop down dead or until Social Security says we can stop, (whichever comes first), sleeping and doing the same things all over again at daybreak. Routine and predictability though calming and reassuring, can numb the soul over time. Don’t let that happen. Take heart. This season, as God intended it to be, will always be a joyful reminder of what truly matters in life. ***

has strictly construed this term to implement a policy of liberally granting relief so that cases can be resolved on their merits. Olvera v. Olvera, 232 Cal. App. 3d 32, 283 Cal. Receipt of summons and complaint by a non-English speaking defendant lacking in business sophistication may not impart “actual knowledge.” Goya v. P.E.R.U. Enterprises, 87 Cal. App. 3d 886, 151 Cal. lish and are not sophisticated with business and legal matters, you may use the arguments that the default judgment should be set aside because you did not receive “actual notice.” It is the Court’s policy to, as reflected in the Olvera case, to liberally grant setting aside such defaults and having the case heard on the merits. Default Judgment may be set aside by an attorney by filing a Motion for relief from default. This would be accompanied by a declaration from the defaulted party that he never received actual notice. A copy of the proposed response is also required to be filed with the court. This type of motion must be filed and served within 2 years after entry of default judgment or within 180 days after service of a notice of default or default judgment on the defaulted party, whichever comes first. day – at no charge to participants. The majority of its current members are young Fil-Am adults, but it is open to all ages and ethnic groups. Depending on the time of the year, SIPA Crew is home to up to 30 members. But consistently, it has about 10 to 15 dancers. Since it was established, the group has performed at the Festival of Philippine Arts and Culture (FPAC) twice, a Los Angeles Clipper game halftime show, the Lotus Festival in LA and a Tuesday Night Cafe – a free arts and performance series in Downtown Los Angeles. It participated in recent community events, such as the Larry Itliong Day/20th Anniversary Mural Event at Unidad Park and the Festival of Philippine Arts & Culture (FPAC). As a young group, SIPA Crew is still in the process of spreading the word of its existence. But fortune and fame are not among its aims. “Our goal is to just let people know we’re here and you guys can be proud of us and we can

be the people that can represent you guys if you guys need us,” Maranan said. As a community-based dance group, the long-term goal is to stay alive, and retain and gain more members. “There’s not [many] organizations like [SIPA], so, therefore, there’s not a lot of opportunities,” Wong said. “Paying for classes is pretty expensive now and as the years go it’s going to get more expensive. So knowing we have something like this around the community, this is very beneficial for everybody.” SIPA Crew is able to provide free classes to youth through partial funding from the Verizon Foundation, API Prevention and Aftercare Services, and its own fundraising efforts through performance stipends and special fundraising dance workshops. Some of these efforts have taken place at SIPA anniversary awards and benefits dinners. At this year’s dinner, the group received more than $3,000 from attendees who agreed to “sponsor a step” worth $250 each. “All proceeds of the Sponsor-a-Step go directly to the

program, which gives us the capacity to increase instructional time, and add more components, such as empowerment sessions [and] leadership team planning,” said Tina SalongaBulchand, director of programs and services at SIPA. The crew has managed to expand in the past few months to offer Visual Media Arts classes, where youth can learn photography and video skills by documenting their dance classes. While the focus of SIPA Crew is on dance, it provides a safe space that facilitates the growth of new friendships. “The best thing is we’re all close with each other and vibe off each other,” said Nicole Salimbangon, 17, who has been a member of the crew for eight months. “I feel everyone’s energy.” As the group continues in its third year of dance classes, community performances and a growing program, Wong says he has one main hope for the long-term future: “As long as [SIPA Crew] is strong, healthy and consistent for many, many years, that’s all I can ask for.” n

ASIAN-AMERICAN

Proudly Inauthentic Recipes from the Philippines to Brooklyn By Dale Talde with JJ Goode by MoMar G. Visaya/AJPress It was bound to happen. After appearing on the Bravo hit series top Chef for three seasons and cooking Filipino dishes on the show; then opening his eponymous restaurants – first in Brooklyn, then in Jersey City; Chef Dale talde’s next career move was eagerly anticipated and expected. Last September 15, the Filipino-American chef and his publishers Grand Central Life & Style released his debut cookbook, ASIAN-AMERICAN: Proudly Inauthentic Recipes From the Philippines to Brooklyn. In the book, Chef Dale shares 75 of his recipes, all told in his inimitable voice with fun, inspired, and gorgeous photography. He proudly dedicates this book to his family – dad Salvador, mom Eva, brother Ian and sister Aileen.

Chef Dale Talde

While some chefs cook to transport readers to Northern thailand or Sichuan province or tokyo, Dale’s food reminds all of us that we’re home, and that is how he wants his recipes done. And the taste? Exciting, straight-forward and ridiculously tasty. A hugely successful restaurateur, Dale is an integral player in the ongoing movement in Brooklyn and across America, led by uniquely creative and hip chefs who are redefining food culture. Dale continues to shape the public dialogue about New AsianAmerican Cuisine and he offers no qualms or apologies about it. to that end, his first cookbook is not only a cookbook; it is a cutting-edge study in cultural fusion and the story of one inventive Chicagoan who

this is the second most-ordered dish, after Buttered-toast Ramen, on talde’s brunch menu. And I can take only partial credit: People just go nuts for the combination of crunchy, salty fried chicken and waffles, no matter who makes it. Yet I like to think that my version would get props even from connoisseurs of the genre. I treat my bird in the Korean style, double frying for extra crunch and coating it in sauce for extra flavor. (Remember, though, that you can always cheat and buy wings from Popeyes.) the Continued on Page 4

understood the universality of food at an early age. Born to Filipino parents, Dale talde grew up both steeped in his family’s culinary heritage and infatuated with American fast food, from burgers to chicken nuggets. He effortlessly blends the tastes, ingredients and nuances of a wide swath of Eastern and Western cuisines and techniques. today, his dual identity is etched on the menu at talde, where he reimagines iconic Asian dishes, imbuing them with Americana while doublingdown on the culinary fireworks that made them so popular in the first place. Emphasizing the unexpected, his riff on pad thai, for example, features bacon and oysters, and he gives juicy pork dumplings the salty, springy exterior of soft pretzels.

I have no loyalties when it comes to lobster rolls. If you pile sweet chunks of crustacean on a bun, I’m sold. Yet there’s something about the Connecticut style—warm, buttery lobster as opposed to the chilled mayo-coated Maine style—that gets me particularly amped. Proudly Inauthentic Recipes... From Page 2 the dishes were not authentic Filipino. To that, Dale has a firm response. “I’m not doing Filipino food, I am not Filipino. My parents are Filipinos, I’m a Filipino American. I think most importantly, my voice through food is Fil-Am,” he told us once, explaining that he grew up in Chicago eating a version of Filipino cuisine that his parents cooked, using American ingredients. “Even people who were born in the Philippines would recognize it as Fil-Am. I don’t speak the language, I wasn’t born there but I grew up in a Filipino household eating Filipino culture, Filipino food all day long. I can only represent who I am, my voice as a FilAm,” he added. And now, his version of the dishes he grew up eating, along with other Asian-American classics, are in one cookbook. In it, he recalleddevouring pizza and tater tots when he was in school, but when he got home, it was kare-kare, sinigang, dinuguan. “We ate that at home all day. It was a completely differ-

ent culture outside the home. For me, that’s the viewpoint that I am taking. I’m a Filipino American and I’m going to put whatever that means to me on the plate. That’s how I push the culture through,” he said. This issue, we are sharing three of the recipes found in his book - Short Rib Kare-Kare, Bao-ed Lobster in Warm Chile Butter and Chicken & Waffles. Other masterfully creative and delicious dishes from the cookbook include Crispy Moo Shoo Beef Tartare Sandwiches; Corncakes with Ham and Coconut Brown Butter Syrup; Sausage, Egg, and Cheese Fried Rice; Roast-Chicken-Dinner Lo Mein; Root Beer Glazed Pork Bahn Mi with Bacon; ButteredToastRamen with Bacon and Eggs; Carrot Rendang; and, of course, Potato Chip and Pretzel Squares with Caramel-Chocolate Ganache. The cookbook is an homage to his family who influenced him to cook, particularly his mom and an aunt, who he honors with his take on her kare-kare recipe. Dale pays tribute to his mom, who still finds time to cook delicious and hearty Filipino dishes after

working 16-hour shifts in a Chicago hospital. That she cooked Filipino dishes almost exclusively pushed the young Dale to rebel and he began to cook his own breakfast and at some point, preferred pizza, burgers and tater tots over his mom’s sinigang, adobo or dinuguan. Then came the realization that he had to live in two worlds and that he practically led a double life. Outside his home, he was an American, but at the end of the day, he comes home and becomes Filipino. This unique perspective is what he explores with the recipes he shares with the world through his Asian-American cookbook. ened with lemon juice. Chinese steamed bao buns provide a slightly sweet, doughy backdrop similar to the classic splittop bun. Ingredients: 6 fresh or frozen Chinese buns (aka gua bao, folded buns, or steamed sandwiches) 1 stick (1/4 pound) unsalted butter, cut into several pieces 1/4 cup Sriracha 1/2 teaspoon red chile flakes 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt, plus more for seasoning 10 ounces cooked lobster

meat (from two 1½-pound lobsters), chopped into bite-size chunks (2 cups) 1 generous tablespoon fresh lemon juice 1 generous tablespoon thinly sliced scallions 1 generous tablespoon loosely packed cilantro leaves Method: 1. Right before you serve, arrange the buns on a plate, cover them with damp paper towels, and microwave, flipping once, about 1 minute. 2. Melt the butter in a small saucepan over medium-low heat and stir in the Sriracha,

chile flakes, and ½ teaspoon salt. Reduce the heat to low, add the lobster, and stir occasionally just until the lobster is hot all the way through, 1 to 2 minutes. Take the pot off the heat and stir in the lemon juice, scallions, and cilantro. Season to taste with more salt and lemon juice. Cover to keep it warm. 3. Remove the buns from the parchment and put them on a plate. Use a slotted spoon to transfer the lobster meat to the bao buns, spoon on as much of the sauce as you’d like, and eat.

AFTER discussing the popularity of the “AlDub” phenomenon in an online article, the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) once again featured the hit on-screen love team of actor Alden Richards and Maine “Yaya Dub” Mendoza, this time through an interview. The British news agency on Tuesday, Dec. 8 uploaded Richards and Mendoza’s interview with Filipino BBC host Rico Hizon on the set of noontime show “Eat Bulaga.” Hizon said AlDub’s “meteoric rise” in the Philippines, which was evident both in television and in social media, was “difficult to ignore.” “They have dominated headlines and social media trends – certainly in the Philippines – but few have tried to evaluate this winning formula,” Hizon said. “It is, of course, about great entertainment, but perhaps the magic is also in the marketing, a smart social media strategy, and good business sense.” Noting that the “previously unknown couple” have been pulling an average of 8.6 million viewers daily, Hizon said AlDub’s “phenomenal” success was not only a money-spinner for the show’s producers but also for Richards and Mendoza themselves, as seen in their various commercial endorsements, both local and international. But despite her popularity, Mendoza told Hizon that she has not yet fully absorbed everything that is happening to her. “Everything that is happening now has not sunk in to me yet… The mere fact that people are so engaged and drawn into the whole thing is unbelievable. The support and love of our fans is amazing, they’re incredible,” Mendoza said. Asked about the possibility of having a real-life affair, Richards said: “That possibility is possible.” AlDub creator Jenny Ferre denied to BBC that a potential off-screen relationship

between the actors has been made up to appeal to fans, but admitted that the 36-yearold show had been facing problems in attracting younger viewers. “We were encountering a little problem… before it happened, like how to penetrate social media and how to go

digital,” Ferre said, noting that the AlDub phenomenon was a stroke of luck. “TV is like Dracula, social media is the blood, you just have to suck it out and give TV that strength.” “The show will last as long as AlDub can give me real emotions,” she added. (Inquirer.net)

Mango Mix by Martin

Jason L. ita-as

It’s 2015: an age with new advances in technology and new methods to make what was once time-consuming and

A look into gender equality tedious a thing of the past (literally). But there are a lot of things that have not changed. Unfortunately, one of the things that stay rooted to the past is the battle of the sexes. Some believe in the old ways of males bringing home the bacon, while the women cook

and clean at home. But there are factions that believe the opposite -- that women should make themselves important in the world. While both parties may have points that put their opinions in both positive and negative lights, nothing will get sorted out without a basic understanding of gender roles and how they all came about. Flashback on gender roles Whether we look back into early history or the Bible, women have always been at a disadvantage in the past. As they were generally vulnerable to attack when carrying child, the early women were believed to have looked to their genetically stronger and rougher male counterparts to protect them. Even accounts in the creations of God seem to point that women were the cause of humans’ banishment from the garden of Eden. Because of this, women have often been pushed into the background throughout most of human history. But where there are rules, there are those who are bound to break them. From Queen Nefertiti rising into power to the femme fatale of a pirate, Grace O’Malley, they pioneered the idea of women being on equal footing to their male counterparts. One above the other? As history progressed, women began to break free

male and female rights, things have turned from once a dutyfilled mission into an all-out brawl for supremacy. The fight for women’s rights have been marred with the radical actions of die-hard supporters, resulting in the false ideas that the fight is just a “woman’s way to take over a once male-driven world.” As for the supporters of the male gender, some people have taken them to extremes that make others label their aims for gender equality as a “show of their fragile masculinity”. A paltry form of entertainment for people to bet on which side is going to win the next battle. But what we have to bring into the light is that both males and females are people. Aside from a few minor differences in anatomy, we are all human beings who share the responsibility of building up the world around us for the future

generations. Let us all go back to the root of the intent between supporting both female and male rights: The aim for equality. Men should not put down strong-willed women who have valuable opinions. Women should not respond to male attacks with an equal show of aggression or disrespect in order to avoid inciting further conflict. Instructing the children on how both men and women are of equal footing should be our first priority in introducing the world into a new era where both genders look at each other respectfully. Let us try to avoid putting down one or the other in order to prove the point that we are all one in the same, creatures of intelligence who can learn to get along with one another no matter what role we play in this world. from their roles as housekeepers and wives. Slowly, the once dominated plethora of male jobs and roles were now being occupied by women who proved themselves to be just as effective and as capable. This sparked an interest in women to begin certifying their role as dominant figures in society and began movements to counter the injustice of misogynistic mindsets. On the part of the men, the idea of males being the dominant one between the two genders has permeated throughout history, and still exists even today. These two separate ideas have led to often abrasive confrontations between the two groups who seem to have escalated their aims of overpowering the opposite gender through their respective rights. Short Rib Kare-Kare

From Page 2 with caramelized sugar and pineapple juice. Someone always brought arroz valenciana, a Filipino version of paella, yellow from turmeric rather than saffron and made with sticky rice, Chinese sausage, shrimp, and peas. I ate like a beast but always saved room for several servings of kare-kare, a classic Filipino stew rich with peanuts and funky from shrimp paste. Aunt Catalina reserved the stew for Christmastime, because it took a long time to make. She used oxtail and innards. I rock short ribs. The stew’s so rich you might need some charred cabbage, eggplant, and long beans to go with it. Preheat the oven to 350°F. Combine the oil, annatto seeds, and turmeric in a large Dutch oven or oven-proof pot, set it over medium-high heat, and cook, stirring occasionally, until the oil is a reddish color, about 1 minute. Add the onion, ginger, garlic, and chiles and cook, stirring occasionally, until the onions are brown at the edges, about 5 minutes. Stir in the shrimp paste and sugar and cook, stirring, for about 3 minutes more. Use your hands to add the tomato, squeezing the pieces to release their juice. Cook, stirring occasionally and

scraping the pot to release stuff that’s stuck to it, until the tomatoes begin to fall apart, 5 to 7 minutes. Stir in the coconut milk and vinegar, and let it come to a boil. Add the beef in a more or less even layer, tightly cover the pot, and cook in the oven until the beef is very tender but not falling apart (more like pot roast than pulled pork), about 3 hours. Use a slotted spoon to transfer the beef to a plate and strain the liquid into a large bowl, discarding the solids. Return the liquid to the pot, set it over very low heat, whisk in the peanut butter until it’s fully combined, and return the beef to the liquid. Season with salt (or even better, more shrimp paste) to taste, turn the heat to medium, bring the liquid to a simmer, stir well, then turn off the heat. You can eat it right away— topped with the garlic-chile vinegar, cilantro stems, and toasted coconut flakes—but it’s even better a few days after you cook it. Let the beef cool in the liquid, cover, and store it in the fridge. Gently reheat it when you’re ready to eat. *** 3 tablespoons vegetable oil 1 teaspoon annatto seeds

Moonlighting by Mylah de

Some love or hate it, others write or repeat it. But the obsession with gossip seems here to stay. From what we read about the unholy and unchanging trinity of the subject, the reporter and reader have stoked the human appetite for gossip, dating back to the salad days of the silver screen magazines to the instantaneous communication of the scoop-filled Internet. on the Internet, some enterprising users could pursue “newsâ€? without the constraints and rules of editors and institutions. From the scandals that are too juicy to ignore, too tawdry and salacious, the headline bonanza poisons the atmosphere of real reporting. They go where the stink is, peddling filth as self-styled town criers, versions of Thomas Paine on the Internet and cyberspace, media linchpins, hatchet jobs and exposĂŠs. This “newsâ€? could be malicious, embarrassing, or humiliating, yet true — that’s what hurts. The fuzzy line between news and gossip becomes a complete blur when tabloids sometimes repeatedly overshadow serious news. Neither the inaccuracies nor mistakes angered many, rather it was the stories that reporters got right. The real journalists pride themselves for getting it first and right. They get to the bottom of the story and bend more than backwards to get the other side. That is what we call as fair reportage.

From Page 4

The world of gossip

Publishing and disseminating scandalous information about the rich and powerful have existed as long as the written world. Cuneiform tablets from the 15th century discussed allegations that a mesopotamian mayor was committing adultery with a married woman. But, the commercial publication of scandal and gossip, as we understand it today, began in the 1830s with the Industrial Revolution and the birth of the penny press. Although these papers are filled with scandal, their information usually come from official sources, such as court proceedings and arrest records. In the late 19th century, society columns debuted, which contained information of yacht trips or guest lists at debutante balls that were usually sanctioned by subjects. Walter Winchell is often credited with the invention of the modern gossip column by printing private and sometimes salacious information about famous people, mixing in scandalous, unofficial information about pregnancies, divorce and liaison — the keyhole stuff that riveted his readers. Then came matt Drudge, who began by emailing his tidbits to friends calling it “The Drudge Report. What started off with a few readers transformed into a couple of dozens and within no time, over a thousand subscribers. In 1996 he was getting 10,000 hits a day and soon AoL offered him $36,000 a year to carry “The Drudge Report. He had to quit his job to work on his website full-time. By the summer of 1997, he was averaging 15,000 hits a day, getting hundreds of

emails daily with his rouge status that gave him freedom and flexibility that more established journalists didn’t have, but who went by the highest standards of journalism. Then something even more astonishing happened when NBC invited Drudge to appear on “meet the Press, one of the oldest and most respected news shows on television, where other guests included the most revered journalists in the country. It was appalling that the show regarded Drudge as a cyber columnist who could give the scoop on stories. He insisted that his only allegiance was scandal, saying “I go where the stink is. I’m a partisan for news, which seemed to dismay many people — journalists, celebrities, the rich and powerful, and ordinary citizens. Gossip co-existed vigorously, if not always easily, with more serious news during Walter Winchell’s heyday. Gossip disappeared from newspapers and TV in the 1960s, only to re-emerge in the 70s then spread like a virus in the media in the 90s to now. Understanding how modern media could have reached this bizarre state and how someone like mr. Drudge could come to play a pivotal role in American journalism at the end of the millennium could shape the direction of journalism for decades to come. As the legendary media critic A.J.
