REJUVENATING OFFICE SPACES
PG 4 | COLOUR 9-5
On an average, almost every working adult spends 8 hours every day within the walls of the workplace. That’s a third of our lives that we spend inhabiting a foreign place that is not home. It is only fair that these spaces, therefore, are designed to be welcoming, comforting and inspiring. A well-designed workplace is not a luxury - it is as important as a good paycheck. So from among the millions of colours and schemes, which one will you pick to achieve that perfect feel? How do you decide which organisation should look serious and which should look laid-back? We at Asian Paints decided to take up this challenge. The result of our efforts and studies is Asian Paints Colour 9 to 5 - an intelligent system of workplace palette design that understands the inherent nature of any workplace and helps in choosing the right colour scheme.
PG 6 | COLOUR 9-5
Colours influence us in ways that are overt and subtle. We see red when we are angry, we glow green with envy, we turn pink in embarrassment, we are blue when we are sad. These are not merely phrases - these are some of the obvious signs of our symbiotic relationship with colours. Take the case of synesthesia. It is a rare neurological phenomenon that can be explained as the union of senses. Synesthetes experience sensory inputs in mixed ways. To them, a musical note may appear as a swatch of colour. While this is an exaggerated reaction, all of us associate colours with various things such as emotions, states of mind and environmental mood. Strictly speaking, we are all synesthetes. And yet, despite the huge influence that colours have over our moods, we do not give them their due.
By understanding the many ways in which the spectrum affects, we can take advantage of the relationship and design for a specific mood or purpose. In our quest to understand workplace design, we discovered four main types of organisations: the Conventional, the Contemporary, the Avant Garde, and the Opulent. Each of these four organisations have unique characteristics and goals. Thus, their colour palettes will have to bring out the essential nature of the workplace and establish the governing philosophy of the organisation.

CONTEMPORARY By far the most prevalent, modern professional organisations that are aware of and adapt to regular changes fall into this category. More than personalities, design is influenced by brand guidelines. Refer Page No: 16
Organisations driven by creativity/innovation that deal in new-age business ideas and technologies can be considered Avant Garde. In these offices, fostering creativity is paramount and the whole office is designed with this in mind. Refer Page No: 22

CONVENTIONAL OFFICES
PG 12 | COLOUR 9-5
UNDERSTANDING THE ORGANISATION... Usually conservative in style and nature. In such an organisation, the design aesthetics are usually dictated by the top management and there is a clear hierarchy evident in the allocation of spaces.
WORK CULTURE...
‘
Focused on Heritage: There are clear protocols on behaviour and interaction, especially with senior management.
‘
Goal-Oriented: Conventional organisations are largely driven by the short and long-term goals set by the top management.
OFFICE SPACE
Naturally, the design will be skewed towards giving more space and comfort to the top management, with support staff handily nearby.
CONVENTIONAL
Interaction points, such as conference rooms, are designed with a view to impress the stakeholders and create a perception of assured professionalism.
Functional cubicles are provided to the middle management and the employees, serviced by a utilitarian pantry and simple mess/ canteen areas.
CONTEMPORARY OFFICES
PG 18 | COLOUR 9-5
UNDERSTANDING THE ORGANISATION... Owing to a more democratic structure within the organisation, internal stakeholders are as important as external, and the challenge is to create a workspace that will ensure a holistic experience.
WORK CULTURE...
‘
Brand Focused: Most of these organisations have a well-defined brand image and philosophy that dominate almost every aspect of business and marketing.
‘
Less Hierarchical: There is a visible synergy in such workspaces with top management and the regular employees interacting on a frequent basis, working towards a common vision.
OFFICE SPACE
A good design guideline is to have senior management in transparent cabins to indicate both the ease of approachability and the importance of the office.
CONTEMPORARY
Middle management and other employees are usually seated in an open-space for better cooperation and communication.
Multiple points of interaction are created across the office floor with brand communication being the most important visual need.
The canteens in such organisations are usually welcoming and sometimes even fun. Food courts in such organisations usually become a place to discuss work.
PG 22 | COLOUR 9-5
AVANT GARDE OFFICES
PG 24 | COLOUR 9-5
UNDERSTANDING THE ORGANISATION... In such firms, contrary to a conventional hierarchical setup, employees are the most important assets. No expense or resource is spared in keeping them comfortable and inspired.
WORK CULTURE...
‘
People Focused: The employees are usually young (25-35), energetic and full of ideas to improve the organisation.
‘
Collaborative: All for one and one for all that is the motto in such places where the senior management and employees work together seamlessly.
OFFICE SPACE
AVANT GARDE Homogenous work setting with very little hierarchy visible in space.
The pantry area is designed as part of the workspace and even the canteens are areas of fun.
Conference rooms are reborn as brainstorming areas and are designed more like fun labs with various tools to help the employees visualise and articulate better.
PG 28 | COLOUR 9-5
OPULENT OFFICES
PG 30 | COLOUR 9-5
UNDERSTANDING THE ORGANISATION... The Opulent offices are usually the premises of a renowned professional - a true expert. The design of the workspace is solely guided by the professional and is aimed at creating an impression of impeccable professionalism and expertise.
WORK CULTURE...
‘
Individual Focused: Employees consider it a privilege to be working with such a professional and are motivated to emulate his/her styles.
‘
Unified Style and Vision: There is a very clear hierarchy in such firms, with the entire organisation driven by the visions and ideas of the single individual at the top.
OFFICE SPACE
OPULENT Luxuriously appointed, private space is provided for the top professional.
The expert is identified by his attention to detail. The same philosophy goes for the opulent offices. Subtle design elements are characteristic of such organisations.
Entertaining clients is near the top of the agenda and, as such, waiting rooms and meeting rooms are designed sumptuously.
