Urban Design & GIS Portfolio
Yaxing Li
About Eight years ago, with a passion to help people live in a better place, I chose urban planning as my life’s career. To become a high quality planner, I pursued a Master’s Degree of Community Planning at the University of Cincinnati, intending to continue learning and growing. I am interested in a city’s cultures and history, and believe that good design will improve people’s lives, and, also create interest for developers.

Urban Renewal Zhangjiakou Railroad Station established in 1909, which is the first railroad station in China connecting Beijing and Zhangjiakou City. Its location was the center of the city, however, after the completion of Zhangjiakou South Railway Station, the main transportation mission has been taken over. Therefore, the government planned to change the station as a museum, and surrounding areas will also be transformed. Program Used: AutoCAD, Photoshop, SketchUp

RIVER FRONT URBAN DESIGN This project was a real project from my internship in the T-H-U-P-I company. Under the guidance of the supervisor, I did a series of relevant information gathering and analysis, and completed the project maps (except renderings). With good ecological environment, rich waterfront landscape, and flat geography, this project was located on a 310.3 acre farmland in northwest of Anhui province in China. Due to the area is underutilized, the traffic system is inconvenient. Program Used: AutoCAD, Photoshop, Illustrator, SketchUp

Urban Design Project 3 Site Planning
Ault Park Site Plan Ault Park is one of Cincinnati’s largest and most beautiful parks, spanning 224 acres. About 80% of the park is made up of densely wooded vegetation. In the Site Plan class, we took a hypothetical look at how to develop a large piece land with complicated topography. Program Used: ArcMap, AutoCAD, Photoshop, Illustrator, SketchUp

Preferred Areas for Development
After considering the site analysis, the development site was chosen to be the western half of Ault Park, consisting of about 120 acres. Development will be clustered on the two hilltops in the northwest and southern portions of the site. These areas are the most suitable for development because they contain good soils, have only slight slopes, and are well drained. To take advantage of Ault Park’s garden terraces, the densest development (townhomes, and mixed use) will occur along the western half of the Observatory Avenue loop.

Site Anaylsis With a good practice in GIS class, I and partner Frank worked together and produced a series of physical environment analysis maps in Methods of Physical Analysis class. Here are some examples about our GIS mapping. Program Used: ArcMap
University Impact Area Solution Study This project is from my Coop experience, I mapped and evaluated locations of student housing surrounding the University of Cincinnati (UC) campus based on students addresses provided by UC from 2014, to the University of Cincinnati Impact Area Study. And prepared maps including frequency and trends in housing violations for off campus student housing.
