Bradford Charity needs hikers to stride out in battle against poverty Charity needs hikers to stride out in battle against poverty. THE temperate beauty of the Yorkshire Dales may seem a long way from the heat of Pakistan but a new charity event is setting out to help make the world a smaller place. Walkers from all communities across the Bradford district are being urged to sign up for a “Hike and Barbecue” in support of the city’s Poverty Alleviation Scholarships (PAS) Foundation, which aims to help reduce abject poverty in developing countries. The walk will start at the Ribblehead Viaduct and take in some fabulous scenery and stunning waterfalls on the way to Whernside, where hikers will be rewarded with a “mouth-watering” barbecue, prepared by awardwinning chef Aurangzeb Khan, from the Kabana restaurant, in Huddersfield. The event, the first of its kind organised by the PAS Foundation, takes place on Sunday, April 28, starting at 9am with the barbecue at 1pm.
Tickets, which cost £11.25 per person, are available from event organiser Asif Khan, the PAS community engagement coordinator, telephone 07800 864780 or e-mail: asifkhan77@hotmail.com. The PAS Foundation charity was set up and supported by the Bradford-based QED Foundation to help alleviate poverty in some of the poorest corners of the world by helping young people into work. Its main focus so far has been on Pakistan, where 70 per cent of the country’s 210 million people are under the age of 30 and 1.5 million new jobs are needed every year. The charity has three main aims: to financially support young people from very poor families to earn their livelihoods, become less dependent on handouts and live with respect and dignity, with a particular focus on single mothers, orphans and ethnic minorities who suffer most; to develop the capacity of education and training establishments in Pakistan by helping them engage with their UK-based counterparts to provide nationally- and internationallyrecognised vocational
qualifications; and, thirdly, to encourage British Pakistanis to invest in training and improving the skills of their poorer relatives and friends. Dr Mohammed Ali OBE, founder and chief executive of QED, said: “Poor and unemployed young people are in danger of getting into drugs and can be targets for extremists. “In the inter-connected world we live in they would often make hazardous journeys to reach western countries to escape their circumstances – but we want to help them earn their own livelihoods in their own countries.
“The PAS Foundation operates in partnership with reputable training providers in Pakistan and our work is already helping to enable young men and women to qualify as refrigeration and mobile phone technicians, electricians, plumbers and joiners, security guards and sewing machinists, to name but a few. “We would like all communities to help us achieve our mission to help 10,000 young men and women and we hope this hike and barbecue will provide a way for people to support us and have some fun at the same time.” You can find out more about the charity at: pasfoundationuk.org

Will Batley Get Its Own Council? Batley is the latest community to look at forming its own Council and now the group behind the bid have launched a petition. The petition will be key in highlighting support within Batley for the Town Council. A Town or Parish Council is the most local level of government run voluntarily by residents for the benefit of the community. There are around 9,000 such councils in England serving about 16 million people or 25% of the population. One of the reasons residents in Batley decided to form one is because they felt their town “was consistently left behind.” Vice Chair of the group, Ann Hall said:“We don’t feature in any of Kirklees plans, the council haven’t invested in Batley in recent years, and all funds are going to Huddersfield and Dewsbury.” “Residents were also unhappy about plans to build new housing estates and wanted to influence that so instead of complaining about this we felt we should try to make a different to Batley and af-

A local council aims to “represent the community, deliver services to meet local needs and strive to improve the quality of life in the area.” Town Councils therefore have an important role in promoting and managing the interests of the town and as such are independent of any political party. This independence is important to the Batley Town Council group and has been written into their constitution.

4,000 homes for Riverside Village By Bilal Saloo bilal@asiansunday.co.uk
Kirklees Council have given the go-ahead for an ambitious development which will build 4,000 new homes on the green belt. The Dewsbury Riverside Masterplan, which was approved on 19 March, will be located on a 160 hectare site in South Dewsbury, on land south of Ravensthorpe and south east of Mirfield. It is proposed to have six neighbourhoods with a large public park at the centre and a new local centre that will have shops, a GP practice, a pharmacy, a relocated mosque and community sports pitches. Connected and surrounded by woodlands, residents will be encouraged to live healthy lifestyles with natural play areas, allotments, walking and cycling routes and bridle paths. The first 1,869 homes of the 4,000 are to be built in the next fifteen years along with a new primary school and parks and public facilities as part of the Local Plan approved on 27 February. The re-

How Do You Prepare For Ramadan?
By BILAL SALOO
bilal@asiansunday.co.uk As a Muslim, Ramadan is the most important month of the year for me. From the first day to the last, it’s a time of reflection, prayer and personal improvement. But the months before can be as important in preparing oneself for the long days of fasting from dawn to sunset. After all, when you’re thirsty and tired from fasting for seventeen hours, the last thing anyone needs is an unnecessary task. I talked to some people about what they do to prepare for the holy month. “It’s about getting the freezers stocked” Food is one highlight. Sinking your chompers into a samosa to break a fast is as refreshing as torrential rainfall after a drought. But these quickly-cooked, snack-able delicacies are made in advance, as Asma from Dewsbury said: “For Ramadan I make the usual samosas and other snacks well in advance. We prepare these as a family, we all decide what to make and we all help to make them. We then share the food out between us.” “In terms of religious preparation I start my Quran praying a few days before Ramadan as this allows my mind to prepare for the holy month ahead.” Mohamed, a father, has seen food
and freezer size increase over the years: “I help to make the savouries. It seems once upon a time savouries magically appeared at Iftar, but I now find they need to be made in large quantities in the run-up to Ramadan. The quantities seem to have increased too, I mean the box freezer from the 1980s was replaced by the chest freezer, which subsequently was upgraded to the six compartment standing freezer.” “I suppose I do plan a routine. And that includes time for prayers and recitation of the Quran. A regular hour nap at 5pm. It’s needed, especially on work days.Basically anything which can be done beforehand gets done”
“In planning for Ramadan, it’s about getting the freezers stocked. Samosas and savoury pancakes are our favourites.”
Khatija, a mum with young kids, saves time by getting things done beforehand: “Ramadan preparations usually include bulk shopping a week or two before, which saves time in Ramadan and just leaves the perishable items to get.”
Getting into the right frame of mind is important to focus on the religious aspect of the month and overcome the temptation to sneak a tea, like Yousuf, from Batley: “Mostly I try to get into the right mental state. I read a bit more into Islam. I try to be more peaceful and let arguments go. I just try to become a better Muslim and focus on the spiritual side of things.”
“A few weeks before is the crazy rush of freezer filling with homemade savouries to last through Ramadan, which saves a bit of time and just leaves the daily cooking to do. Then will come the de-cluttering of the house and any other important jobs. Basically anything which can be done beforehand gets done so it gives more time to focus on praying and doing Ibadat (worshipping).” Talking to Bilal he said the important part was stocking the freezers:
“We also clean the house top to bottom, try to keep a few fasts in the lead up to it and get into a routine to ensure we make the most of Ramadan.” “Samosas, kebabs, spring rolls, you know, the usual” Rozina makes food with her family: “I spend my time making samosas, rolls and kebabs. I’ll make them with my mother-in-law and help her make some as well.”
“Personally I don’t cook, but my mother does. Spending the weeks before Ramadan making Samosas, kebabs, spring rolls, you know, the usual. This year there’ll be less than normal because fried foods are difficult to digest with so little time between fasts. We’re also trying to eat healthier so we don’t make as much fried food anymore.”
“To be brutally honest, I don’t really do anything different” There are also a few mavericks, who do much less to prepare for the challenging month ahead. Sumayyah just goes about her daily routine: “I don’t really do anything. I do everything pretty much the same that I would do on a normal day, even going to the gym.” Adam, a father, has a very generous friend: “I don’t do too much when it comes to preparing for Ramadan, but my friend does. He buys ZamZam water and dates every year for all the mosques in the town he lives in.” Ibrahim, from Dewsbury, prepares a little with his family:“To be brutally honest, I don’t really do anything different, I just try to eat a little less often because I know that I’m going to have to fast for a long time in Ramadan.” “Me and my family do try to pray more than we usually do and what we eat for sehri, we start to eat that about a month earlier. But not much else really.” This year Ramadan starts in early May and ends in early June. The exact dates will be confirmed after the traditional sighting of the new crescent moon by naked eye. How do you prepare for Ramadan? Share your experience with us.

Since the opening of The Broadway, Bradford’s top end of the city centre has been struggling to attract businesses to invest, thanks to low footfall numbers. Bradford Council hope to change that, with plans to demolish a number of buildings on Darley Street, including the former Marks & Spencer building, and build a new food market and public square in their place. A full planning application for the development has been submitted, detailing the layout, elevations, and access for deliveries among other things, with the development expected to cost around £21million. The discussions for this development have been in the pipeline for some time as part of a regeneration of the city’s markets. If plans go ahead the Oastler Centre will close, with food stalls opening in this new market and non-food stalls moving to a refurbished Kirkgate Market. Meet the two friends who like to call themselves the ‘sapna fillers’
LEFT: NUTAN PATEL RIGHT: KAPILA PARMAR
By FATIMA PATEL fatima@asiansunday.co.uk
Nutan Patel and Kapila Parmar, may seem like ordinary homemakers to most at first glance, but the two friends who share an amazing bond are far more than meets the eye. The good friends recently hosted a Mother’s Day fundraiser, at the Ukranian Community Centre in Bradford 7, in which they raised more £3000 for their charity Marie Curie Hospice. More than 300 people attended and had a rocking time, dancing to Bhangra and Bollywood beats. It’s not the first time the friends have done a fundraiser, previously they hosted one in St Antonys Church, Clayton, where 250 people attended and £2700 was raised for their charity. All this within less than a year of their friendship? “We’ve known each other longer, but we met properly last August during a walk.” Nutan told me over a cup of coffee. Her friend Kapila joined her to reveal to me that they really bonded properly for the first
time during their walk and have never looked back. They do Yoga together in Nutan’s garage and go swimming together. This bond also gave them the strength to go out of their comfort zone and put on events together – their way of putting something back into to the community. “There was always a desire to want to do something, but there was always a hurdle. Now with both us, we can take on 50/50 of the workload, which means our other commitments don’t suffer.” Nutan told Asian Sunday Nutan, is 54 years old, was born and raised in the UK and has two grown up children. Along with being self-employed and running the family business, she is also a property dealer. On the other hand, Kapila, was raised in India and came to the UK when she married her partner. She is 51 years old and also has grown up children and helps out in the family restaurant called Parmars, based in Liversedge.
difference. Sometimes if you want to do something you just do it” continued Nutan. “Running events is a risk as you may not always recover your costs. So, the way we plan it, is to keep overheads low and ticket prices affordable, that way if there are any losses, we can cover them with our own money and give to charity” Nutan explained. “But thank goodness, that’s not happened, and we have been successful on both our events, that everyone keeps asking us even now, that when is our next one!” “Their enjoyment and happiness brings a smile to our faces and hearts and makes us want to do more.” Added Kapila
“We just want people to know that it’s never too late to fulfil your dreams. I want to inspire every woman out there to never give up” Listening to both Kapila and Nutan is so energising, the two have had many struggles during their early years, but never let their past dictate their present and hope to live life to their fullest. Nutan said: “As long as our kids and our partners are fed and we have paid our bills, then the remaining time is ours and we intend to make full use of it and keep doing events, which bring our community happiness and at the same time, help us raise funds for needy charities.” “We would like to call ourselves the ‘sapna (dream) fillers’” . the look of both the characters; the eye liner, ear ring and the long hair portray the similarity. The characters are completely different, and I would always talk to Abhisekh about Zafar’s character and try to understand the struggle that the character Zafar was going through in his childhood. So, I have tried to portray the character as per the script. Although I did speak to Shahrukh sir after the teaser launch, I wanted to know what he thought of my character in the teaser. He said that it’s good to see that you are working hard and that these are the roles that get you closer to the audiences. You have a great comfort level with Alia, as you have done maximum films with her and that s very evident during the film promotions. ho else did you find to be the most easiest going or comfortable interacting with on the sets of Kalank? Aditya and I share great friendship; we were always goofing around on the sets of Kalank. Sonaskshi and I have been good friends and know each other since childhood, so there was a great amount of comfort with the both of them. ould you say your character of Zafar in Kalank, is perhaps the most mature character you have played till date? The mannerisms, the look, the performance all show us a much more mature Varun Dhawan, what are your comments on that? Zafar is the most challenging role of my career so far. I had to follow a rigorous training schedule to achieve the look of the character. There was a scene that had to be shot in Kargil and the temperature was really low. I had taken the shot bare-bodied, but I had to act like I wasn’t feeling cold, these were the minor challenges. The most difficult part was to connect with character as I hadn’t played such a character that had an air of arrogance. The character of afar flirts with life and danger and has an intense look throughout the movie. It’s been a hell of a journey playing the character of Zafar. I just hope that the audiences will like the character of Zafar when they watch the movie. During your promotions, you seem to be having a lot of fun with the cast and crew, no doubt it must have been the same on set, if you were to recall your most fondest memory of working on Kalank what would it be? I had a great time shooting on the sets of Kalank. The best memory was shooting alongside Madhuri Ma’am. e had such long scenes together in the film and have never shot such a long scene with anyone, so while shooting I would forget that I was acting beside Madhuri Ma’am and Abhisekh would come and tell me that you are shooting with Madhuri Ma’am so don’t forget your lines. If I didn t feel confident about a particular dialogue, Madhuri Ma’am would tell me to try it in a different way. She was a great support throughout.

Want That Summer Body? Here Are Our Top Tips To Help You Cut Out The Long Run Turns out marathoning for an hour on the treadmill isn’t only boring as hell, but it doesn’t even give you that great of a workout. Experts say if you’re trying to flatten your abs, one of the most effective methods is actually interval training, which means incorporating short bursts of high-intensity burnouts into whatever you’re doing, whether that’s running, squats, whatever. And bonus — it’ll keep you burning calories for up to 16 hours post-exercise. Hydrate, Hydrate, Hydrate We get that the last thing you want to do when you’re feeling puffy is chug water, but experts say it’s critical to regulating your metabolic rate (and consequently, your body’s fat-burning mechanisms). Drinking your recommended eight glasses of H2O daily will help your body run more efficiently, making your workouts and healthy eating efforts way more effective. Plus, the more water you drink, the more e cess you ll flush out, so you wind up actually de-bloating as a result. Win-win. Curb That Before-Bed Snack You know not to crush half a pizza before jumping in bed, but even munching on something healthy-ish at night can throw off your calorie-burning momentum. Ideally, while you're sleeping, you want your body to burn its current fat storages for fuel as opposed to whatever you ate as a midnight snack. ake sure to fill up at dinner every night, and then banish yourself from the kitchen at least two hours before bed.
Get Your Zzzs Adult women require anywhere from six to eight hours of sleep every night. If you’re staying up late on the regs and aren’t meeting that minimum, you’ll throw off your natural rhythm, which can cause your body to freak out and start overproducing hormones (including cortisol). By getting the right amount of sleep every night, your body and metabolism will stay regulated — keeping you and your tummy on point.
Dip Into the Olive Oil Yeah, it sounds a little weird, but hear us out. Experts say that certain compounds in olive oil stimulate a hormone in your stomach that signals to your brain that it’s full. Thus, it curbs your appetite so your body doesn’t feel quite as hungry. You probably don’t want to shoot it straight up, so try dipping some multigrain bread into about a tablespoon of the stuff 15 minutes before a meal. Quirky, but it should keep you from overeating and packing on unnecessary pounds.
Eat Every Three Hours You might think passing on lunch will save calories and trim your middle, but you’re actually trending toCardio is Critical You know cardio is critical to tummy toning, ward the opposite. Going long periods of time without eating can send your body into starvation mode, but weightlifting is just as clutch since it meaning it starts storing everything you’ve already helps up your body’s lean muscle mass. eaten as fat since it doesn’t know when you’re going The more muscle you have, the more efficiently your body processes calories and to feed it again. And guess where that chub piles on first up. our midsection. perts say having a small burns body fat. So not only will you get a sculpted middle, you’ll also make it so you meal or snack every three hours will keep your body can eat more without packing on any extra fueled and in prime calorie-torching mode all day. poundage.
Green leafy veg – you know they’re good for you Not only are vegetables like kale, lettuce, and broccoli practically calorie-free, they’re also full of vitamins and are super filling. Munching on these at lunchtime or for a snack will make you less likely to eat something naughty and pudge-inducing later on.
Eat Dark Chocolate Seriously. It’s packed with zinc, which experts say is pretty much your belly’s best friend. Zinc increases your body’s levels of circulating leptin, which is a hormone that regulates your energy expenditures, fat storages, and appetite … so pretty much everything that impacts having that e tra bit of fluff overtop your abs. You’ll obviously need to opt for the lower-in-sugar kinds and indulge in moderation, but it should help chip away at that pooch. Now that we can dig.

How can I help a friend with depression?
By Lowri Dowthwaite Lecturer in Psychological Interventions, University of Central Lancashire
How do I help a depressed friend? She’s 13 and she says it’s due to trauma, and even though we’re bffs she’s never told me what the trauma is. – Anonymous.
(I’ve linked to some sources below). Understanding depression. We all feel sad or down from time to time, but depression is worse than that, and typically affects the way we feel, how we think and how we behave. We know from research that people with depression often withdraw from friends and family, stop doing things they enjoy and have more negative thoughts, which make them feel hopeless. You may have noticed some of these signs with your friend.
Coping with trauma ost victims of trauma find it hard to talk about the trauma itself, as this can bring back the feelings and physical sensations that they experienced at the time. Trauma is defined as a deeply distressing or disturbing experience. It can be triggered by a one off event, or can be the result of ongoing stress.

People can experience trauma as a result of ordinary life events such as illness, divorce or losing a loved one, or more extreme events such as assault, injury or natural disasters. No matter how the trauma came about, I would urge you to be very careful about uncovering this with your friend – it would be better if you could seek support together from a trusted adult, or through a specialist service.
The next thing you could do is give your friend some information about what support is out there. FOOD REVIEW

newsdesk@ asiansunday.co.uk Bombay Bites Bombay Buildings, Shearbridge Road, Bradford BD7 1NX 01274 965122 Taste: 4/5 Ambience: 4/5 Service: 4/5 Value for money: 5/5 Living in Bradford all your life, you’re spoilt for choice for food. There is something new opening on every corner of Bradford, whether that is a dessert bar or a new restaurant. Friends from other cities travel to Bradford for the popular Great Horton Road and Leeds Road and all they have to offer, but what needs to be more addressed is the smaller businesses. Next door to one of the UK’s largest Indian department store, Bombay Stores, Bombay Bites (Shearbridge Road) stands tall in the Bombay empire, serving some of the most popular South Asian food from across the globe. Serving the likes of Tikkas and kebabs, that what they claim takes you to the tandoors of Mohammedali road, Mumbai. Starters included Pav Bhaji, Vada Pav that have travelled half the world to

serve you their original spices. Bombay Bites has just been one of the many stores on the lists that falls under ‘I need to try that place’. Studying for three years in a different city, makes you appreciate the true flavour radford has to offer. I have been to Bombay stores numerous times, but have never tried the food next door. After making a trip to the branch, finally decided to put my taste buds to the test. During this time, the weather was wet, windy and just plain wet. Clinging onto my umbrella, I fought against the wind and rain, arriving at my destination. The breeze of warm air as opening the double door was promising. For a Tuesday afternoon, the restaurant was fairly busy, with mostly students from across the University likely grabbing their lunch. The staff member serving me was very polite, and smiled throughout. Her positive attitude made the place seem more friendly and calm. I picked up the menu at the counter, to see my eyes wander towards the grilled chicken steak and chips. Being a big fan of steak, I am very picky. I thought it would be very hard to get right, so this is a good challenge. The price for this including a bottled drink was £7.50, which wasn’t bad at all in my books. A couple of tables were not clean yet to sit, so I placed myself at the back. The only downside; Behind
me were the toilets, so this wasn’t very pleasing when trying to have a nice meal. The music playing was traditional mash-ups of old and modern Bollywood music, which seemed ideal for the atmosphere it was holding. Not too loud, not too quiet. It was about five minutes before saw my food arriving on my neatly laid out table, with cutlery carefully positioned, on what seemed like a big black slate. The portion seemed perfect for what I paid, and the food looked even more appealing. I saw the smoke rise from the plate as well as the steak sizzling in its essence. The condiment on the size added a nice touch. Being a big mayonnaise fan, I asked for some to the waiter and she bought me a decent portion. Normally, other restaurants give you it in a small jar, where it would finish within minutes. The steak was cut into smaller pieces placed over the chips, that were smothered in grilled onions and peppers. The chicken was oozing with rich spices with a sweet undertone and the chips were well cooked. I used the added chilli sauce on the side which gave it slightly more richer taste, along with the provided salad, dipped in my favourite mayonnaise.. T he food was hot but gave the right satisfaction of taste. It was no secret they were shortlisted for the Curry Awards last year. The staff member who was a
woman, attended to all the unclean tables as well as listening to other customer’s request, ensuring the best customer service. Other Desi dishes were included in the menu that were popular among other customers. In addition to offering an Indian breakfast, main dishes include a wide selection of curries, Indian rolls and dosas (a crispy fermented crepe rolled and stuffed with a potato filling, fried onion and spice mix, served with coconut chutney and sambar). There is a choice of desserts including Indian favourite’s and popular British classics, as well as a vast selection of hot and cold drinks including fruit lassis, a flavoured yoghurt drink. Already being full up, I could not possibly think of dessert. Maybe, next time Bombay Bites. All in all, the food was brilliant. I would definitely recommend this to anyone craving the taste of their homeland food. The price was just right in balance with the portion size. Some restaurants take advantage of the price, in reasoning to the décor on the walls. The service was of high quality and the restaurant was fairly clean and warm. For me, this Bombay branch is only going to be climbing success. Expanding across the country perhaps?

Phone Camera War Hots Up As Huawei Announce P30 Pro’s 5x optical zoom The Huawei 30 ro is the first smartphone to have a 5x periscope-like optical zoom and four cameras on the back. Stepping up the smartphone camera wars another notch, the latest flagship smartphone from the Chinese firm at the centre of a political storm looks to raise the bar not only for camera quality but also fle ibility. The previous Huawei P20 Pro had three cameras on the back with a 3x optical zoom. The £899 P30 Pro adds an extra depth-sensing time-of-flight (TOF) camera for improved portrait and augmented reality modes, joining the main 40-megapixel camera and a 20-megapixel ultrawide angle camera. The company says its new SuperSpectrum camera is capable of absorbing significantly more light for dramatically improved lowlight performance, an area of smartphone photography the company dominates alongside Google. But it is the new eight-megapixel SuperZoom camera, which like a periscope uses a prism to reflect light down the inside of the width of the phone to make room for the required series of lenses for a 5x optical zoom, that is the most interesting. Huawei says its resulting 5x optical zoom beats the digital zooms of competitors using only 2x optical zoom cameras, and that its additional 10x hybrid zoom and up to 50x digital zoom, which use data from multiple cameras to increase detail, is the best in the business. The P30 Pro also has a giant 6.47in OLED screen with a small teardrop notch containing a 32-megapi el selfie camera at the top. Huawei has eschewed the 3D face recognition system it introduced on the Mate 20 Pro for an improved optical in-screen fingerprint scanner located towards the bottom of the screen. It has also removed the phone’s ear-
piece speaker, replacing it with what the company calls “electromagnetic levitation”, which vibrates the screen itself, turning it into a speaker. The rest of the phone resembles last year’s Mate 20 Pro with curved glass front and back, a
range of pearlescent and interesting colours, a fairly large-capacity battery and both 40W wired and 15W wireless charging. It can also reverse wirelessly charge another phone or device, a trick introduced with the company’s other phones last year. Alongside the P30 Pro, which
costs £899 with 128GB of storage or £1,099 with 512GB of storage, Huawei also unveiled the slightly cheaper and smaller £699 P30, which has a 6.1in OLED screen, the same in-screen fingerprint scanner, 128GB of storage and premium design. It has a triple camera system on the back but only 3x optical zoom, and has a traditional flat glass front and back, rather than curved.

Shou d ou e f in e t in fund
SHABAB GULFRAZ Shabab Gulfraz is our resident Finance expert.
The world of finance and selfinvestment is ever increasing in the digital age, and there are many people out there that will manage some if not all of their investments. However, how do you go about it, and avoid the pitfalls in the first instance. I guess without sounding like a know it all, my opinion is that you need to do plenty of research, and not just be aware of funds, but also the platform within which you are investing. Now platforms can also be a very useful tool in terms of research and can aid you in your decision making. There are many different selfinvesting platforms out there. I guess it is up to you to find a platform that suits you. My view is that different platforms have different features, advantages and benefits that will work for different people. It’s a matter of jus researching, google reviews, and finding a platform that has an architecture that works for you. In terms of the platforms they
have valuable information on funds, and also funds that they recommend. Many platforms provide you with recommended funds that they offer to clients; however, my view is to undertake independent research on these funds. This is because their maybe a subjective reason why these funds are being offered to you. So, you like a fund what do you do next. I would go to the fund manager’s website and fund out more about the fund you are looking to invest in. This is because the fund manager site would perhaps provide detailed information about the fund, what its objectives and mandates are as well as performance information. I would also look at sites such as Morningstar and Trustnet. This is because these sites provide valuable information to you as an investor. You can usually find independent comment, as well useful analysis tools that may be able to help you make a decision. If you prefer making independent decisions, as well as saving some money by not using a financial adviser then although
it’s not easy independent selfinvesting might be for you. FCA figures detailed last year that circa £185 billion of funds were self-managed with customers directly working with platforms. The issue I see with selfmanagement is knowing your risk profile, risk tolerance and capacity to take risk. These are important concepts and unless taken into consideration you might end up making wrong decisions and investing in funds that are not appropriate for you. If you feel it is too much work, and you would rather not have the headache, then an independent financial adviser might be an appropriate option for you. This is because they can take the hassle away from investing and most report back to you annually via an annual review. Whatever choice you make my view would be to research your options and make a decision that works for you.

Jasmin Akter has been picked to play for her country in the Street Child Cricket World Cup. The new international competition brings together teams of teenagers from nine countries from across the world in an event designed to raise awareness of global youth homelessness. Teenager Jasmin, who lives in Bradford, was selected for Centrepoint Team England after being spotted coaching youngsters at the Karmand Community Centre (KCC) Youth Project. t is not the first time cricket has put Jasmin in the spotlight. Last year she featured in the BBC Three documentary Bats, Balls and Bradford Girls which told the story of an all-Asian girls’ cricket team battling prejudices to play the game. A gifted sportsperson, she has represented West Yorkshire at cricket and also had trials for Yorkshire and also used to play football for Bradford City. The 18-year-old all-rounder is thrilled to now get the chance to play for her country. “It is a very exciting opportunity that I am really looking forward to,” said Jasmin, who is studying a business course at Bradford College and hopes to later train as an accountant. “I will be with the team for eight days, playing games in Cambridge and ondon and on finals day, at one of the world’s most famous pitches, Lord’s, which will be an absolute honour. “It is going to be great to mix with the other competitors from all across the world and do what we can to raise the profile of a very good cause.” England will compete against teams from Bangladesh, Democratic Republic of Congo, North India, South India, Mauritius, Nepal, Pakistan and Tanzania in the tournament that will culminate in a finals day on the hallowed turf at
Lord’s Cricket Ground in London on May 7. Teams are made up of boys and girls, which appeals to Jasmin as a keen advocate of women in sport. “Cricket is a great game for girls,” she said. “When I was in the all-Asian girls’ team at school we faced a lot of discrimination with some people thinking girls should stay at home to cook and clean. “We all wanted to be taken seriously and prove that girls can play cricket and so it is great that this tournament will involve girls and boys,” The Street Child Cricket World Cup has been scheduled ahead of this year’s ICC Cricket World Cup
which is being hosted by England and Wales and begins at the end of May. A number of matches are set to be played at Yorkshire’s Headingley ground in Leeds, and Jasmin and fellow members of the cricket club at Bradford College, will be
flag bearers for those games. Jasmin and her fellow students will also got a chance to see the World Cup trophy up close when it came into the campus on April 11 as part of the official CC Cricket orld Cup Trophy Tour.

ayyaz@asiansunday.co.uk It’s arguably been one of the best tournaments in living memory, but the football community will be dealing with the reality that this season’s FA Cup is coming to an end very soon (end of May). As close as the end of May is, this year’s FA Cup still has one more game to go, just the small matter of the FA Cup final to determine who will reign supreme for this year’s tournament. This seasons tournament arguably has brought some romance back into the cup. For the past few seasons, the socalled bigger teams were using this tournament as a breeding ground for their reserves.
there was Manchester City who was one of the last four teams in the FA Cup semi-final draw. The other sides were Brighton, Watford and Wolves of course.
in their quest for the quadruple. If only it was that simple, in the semi-final The Hornets were 2-0 down, only to come back and win 3-2.
merit. In the league clash between the two sides, Man City was indebted to a dodgy flag, which helped them on their way to a comfortable win in the end.
The latter two served up a cracking five-goal thriller, which really summed up the spirit of this year’s FA Cup. After the qualifying rounds and other preliminary rounds which form part of the FA Cup journey, two teams (Manchester City and Watford) will look to reign supreme come to the end of May.
Watford might not have the most glamorous team on paper, but they have a real togetherness about them and of course do have Gerrard Delofeou in their ranks who in the semi-final showed he can score a goal out of literally nothing, Manchester City you have been warned.
As for Manchester City, their quality speaks for itself. World class players all over the pitch from 1-11, a goalkeeper who has a touch like a playmaker or a centre forward who’s shooting accuracy is the of like Robin Hood is with his bow and arrow.
Looking from outside in, one would naturally say ... the FA Cup final will be another title for Pep’s men
As talented as the former Barcelona man is, Watford have shown what a great team spirit they have and are eighth in the league on
This is something which Liverpool did, and as a result of that were duly knocked out of the oldest cup competition in club football, by Wolves who would also defeat Manchester United in their memorable run to the semi-finals. As impressive as those results were, special mentions deserve to go to Newport, who beat Premier League Leicester City; as well as Millwall who overcame Everton at The New Den. Arguably in seasons gone by, the FA Cup lost some of its romance and the bigger teams were predictably beating the so-called small teams and competing in the latter stages of the cup. For the sake of the neutral, thankfully this didn’t happen. Of course,
Gerrard Delofeou - can score a goagoal out of literally nothing
All good things must come to an end, but no doubt speaking for all lovers of football and sport here, let’s hope English football’s grand showpiece, ends with a bang.

ayyaz@asiansunday.co.uk After the football fever of last summer, England’s cricketers will look to carry on that recent feel-good factor that’s been around English sport for a while. The footballers have enjoyed success at Under 17, 19, and Under 20 level, with the senior side finishing in their best position in a World Cup since 1966 (which they won of course). England’s cricketers have enjoyed some World Cup success, it was Paul Collingwood’s side won the World T20 in 2010. This thought, however, is the 50 over format, which is the tournament that has got away for England. After finishing runners up in 2, where they lost to Pakistan, painful early round exits have followed, including 2015. As painful as that was, this lead England to where they are now ... The Three Lions are now the world number ranked side in world cricket and are many pundit’s and cricket experts tip to live the World Cup trophy.
England squad has matured since then, but it can be argued that still is a potential flaw with the ngland batting line up (it can implode at any time). Such is the demand for the swashbuckling cricket that they play, arguably it’s a style of play that the England coaching staff very much encourage.
class calibre, which in world cricket is needed of course. England may have Jonny Bairstow, Jason Roy and Alex Hales in their batting ranks, but India (the bookmakers 2nd favourites to win the World Cup) do possess the batting talents of Rohit Sharma and of course the legendary Virat Kohli.
n the flip side to that argument, hosts England do have players like Joe Root, who although might not be like Alex Hales or Jason Roy for example, is a player who can be just as effective due to the fact that Yorkshireman Root knows how to score runs effectively.
India who are Two-time world champions did come out on the wrong side of a five-game one day series with defending world champions Australia 3-2. Such result is significant, especially with how much the Aussies have been struggling with their side in the last year after the high profile players that weren’t available for The Baggy Green. What made that result all the more impressive was that series win was secured at the fortress that is India’s home.
An ominous sign one might think, especially with the array of bowlers that England possesses and that could include Barbadian Jofra Archer who would be eligible to play for the hosts after completing five years of Citi enship. Archer has impressed in the games shorter formats and could come into a team that seems to have all bases covered, an ominous sign for the rest of the pack.
Judging by the talent that England do have at their disposal, it’s hard to see past them, but it wasn’t too long ago after being heavy favourites, did they manage to lose a semi-final in the Champions Trophy to eventual winners Pakistan, who against all odds defeated Eoin Morgans men.
Such is the beauty of sport, however. Tournaments are not won on paper, no matter how impressive England’s is. That should give solace to the other sides India, Australia, New Zealand and Pakistan. Except for New Zealand, this is a list of sides who have done something that red favourites England have not won the World Cup.
A year or so has passed, one would argue and the fact that this
With these sides, all of them possess a front line spinner of a World
a World Cup and not mention Pakistan. Pakistan, arguably the most unpredictable side in world cricket do have the history of being world champions in 1992, as well as T20 Champions in 2009. Will the men in green be able to pose a threat? With Pakistani, you can never say never, but it s difficult especially with the talent on show in the World Cup. This year’s World Cup will include 10 teams, with the so-called Associate Nations taking part (Afghanistan just to name one) as well, Bangladesh although a fully fledged CC member in the oneday rankings, will hope for a strong showing as they look to become a cricketing force to be reckoned with.
Although not Associate nations, Sri Lanka, South Africa, West Indies have not been mentioned in our Australia’s opponents in the 2015 list as sides to look out for, but this orld Cup final were ew eawould be naive to write them out land, who played their first final in of the reckoning completely. In the their history after years of many semi-final heartaches. Captain ane case of all three sides, all are under transition after legendary veterans Williamson will be looking to help have retired from their ranks. his side overcome that heartache and try and go one better. With West Indies, they have experienced success at Under 19 level With effective spinners like Ish so arguably, a new generation for Sodhi and Mitchell Shatner, you would be naive to dismiss the 2015 The Calypso boys at least is on the runners up off hand. After all, their hori on. s cricket coming home From an English perspective you batting unit does possess the exciting talents of Martin Guptill and would hope yes, if England don’t bring World Cup glory home, then Colin Munro. it could be very difficult for them to do so in the future. If we are going to look at a World Cup, then surely one can’t look at
The cricket World Cup starts on May 30 and concludes on June 14.
