Bradford Residents Invited To Have Their Say On Library Services By Newsroom

Newsdesk@asiansunday.co.uk Bradford Council wants to hear residents’ views as it develops plans for the district’s Library Service. The Council understands the importance of libraries as places for learning, leisure and for people to meet. It knows that local communities value their libraries which in many cases have been there for generations. Bradford Council has ambitions to use culture to drive regeneration through increased tourism, improved perception of the local area, and to improve the wellbeing of the district’s residents.

significantly. But while it recognises the valuable contribution that libraries make to the district’s communities, like many other local authorities across the country it has to balance its ambitions with the need to reduce its budget and deliver savings because of government cuts. Budget savings for the Library Service of £1.05m have been agreed for the financial year 1 April 2020 to 31 March 2021 which will leave the Council with an available gross budget of £1.82m to deliver the library service in the future. So far savings have been achieved by looking at different ways of running libraries – so some are now community run and staffed by volunteers, while others are a mixture of volunteers and staff.

Against this backdrop, it is recognised that libraries play an important role in improving outcomes related to learning, civic pride, community cohesion, tourism, health & wellbeing and economic development, but this requires investment and a collaborative approach to future delivery.

Staffing changes made this year have started to put in place the roles needed to support the district’s family of libraries and, going forward, the workforce will be supported and re-equipped with the skills necessary to deliver this.

Bradford Council has made sure that its library network has remained intact, even when the Council’s budget has been cut

The Council is now launching a period of engagement with all those in the district who want to give their views on the future of

libraries. This is a chance for residents to tell the Council what they want out of a library network and to help shape proposals that will be drawn up when the engagement ends. Those proposals will then be subject to formal consultation before any final decisions are taken in the New Year. The Council has developed a survey which asks some key initial questions which are very important to future decision making. All residents are encouraged to complete a survey – whether they use a library all the time or not at all. It only takes a few minutes to have your say via this link: www.bradford.gov.uk/consultations/currentconsultations/libraries-service-engagement/ The page also features more information on the Council’s plans to re-shape the service, including a ‘needs analysis’ which will help residents better understand the performance of our libraries and assist them in forming a view before completing the survey. Steve Hartley, Director for Place at Bradford Council, said: “Our Library Service plays a vital role within our communities and for residents across the district of all ages and circumstances. “That’s why it’s so important

that we engage with our residents and listen to their thoughts and views on our plans. “We want to ensure that their feedback is used to help steer our plans for our libraries and find smarter ways to use public money ensuring we deliver services which are modern, fit for the 21st century and meet the needs of the communities they serve.” Following this engagement exercise, we will review all the data collected across the district and will use this to develop detailed proposals for each of our libraries which will be published for all stakeholders to access. We will then consult with staff, residents, and wider stakeholders on these early in 2020. Bradford Council is committed to undertaking an extensive and inclusive engagement and consultation process and will listen to the voices of all stakeholders including staff, library users, partners and residents. If you are unable to complete the survey online, a hard copy version of the needs analysis, survey and other associated documents will be available in your local library. Site Preparation Begins On £21m Markets Project By Newsroom

Newsdesk@asiansunday.co.uk Work is set to begin on Bradford’s transformational new multimillion pound markets scheme. Bradford Council’s contractors will move onto the Darley Street site soon to begin the strip out of the buildings in readiness for their demolition next year making way for the construction of the new market. Colourful hoardings heralding the scheme will be erected around the former Marks and Spencer building as the demolition preparations begin. The authority’s new scheme features a spacious modern market with dedicated underground servicing areas and a dynamic new public space for open air events and outdoors stalls. The new market will offer high quality food and non-food items giving people the opportunity to discover unusual or specialist items, whilst shopping for daily fresh food or enjoying a meal or light snack. The new market will feature a floor dedicated to non-food sales, one selling for fresh food and a food hall offering hot food and drinks. The Council believes the new development will act as a regeneration catalyst, adding to

the Bradford’s draw as a shopping and leisure destination and attracting thousands of people into the city. The stunning new building and square will be designed to increase the profile of Piccadilly which boasts a number of high quality Victorian buildings. The Council has been conducting research

giving people an opportunity to have their say on the name of the new market. Deadline to participate in the survey is 14 November 2019 and it is believed thousands of applications have already been received. Coun Alex Ross-Shaw, Portfolio Holder for Regeneration, Planning and Transport, said:

“This is a major step in realising this significant transformational project. “The markets will help redefine Darley Street and the city centre, and showcase the fantastic Victorian buildings on Piccadilly by making them a lot more visible.”

Winter Healthcare Guidance: Stay Well This Winter By Newsroom

Newsdesk@asiansunday.co.uk As the weather turns colder and wetter, Bradford District Care NHS Foundation Trust is offering useful winter healthcare guidance and advice to support local people and their families in staying well over the winter months and beyond. As part of the NHS’s ‘Help Us Help You’ winter campaign the Care Trust has a range of selfcare information on its ‘stay well’ web pages including general winter wellness tips together with advice on preventing flu, keeping little ones well, foot health, mental wellbeing and other top tips. Winter weather can cause problems for the over ‘65s or for people with a long-term condition such as diabetes, or a heart or respiratory condition like asthma, so it’s important that people in these groups have the information they need to spot the signs of illness and treat them early. First point of call for minor illnesses, such as sore throats, coughs, colds, upset stomach and aches should be the local pharmacist. The advice is not to wait until it gets worse, but to see your pharmacist for expert, confidential advice and treatment - there’s no need for an appointment. It’s also important to remember that antibiotics don’t work for viruses - they can only treat bacterial infections. Problems like diarrhoea, vomiting, sore throats and colds are usually caused by a virus so should clear up within a few days to a week. Symptoms can be treated at home with over-the-counter medicines. It’s helpful to stock up now with your usual choice of pain management products, rehydration salts, bandages, plasters, thermometer, antiseptic cream/wipes etc. In a life-threatening emergency always call 999; and, for a mental health crisis, if you live in Bradford, Airedale, Wharfedale or Craven, call the First Response service on 01274 221181, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Sarah Horsfall, District Nurse at Bradford District Care NHS Foundation Trust, said: “The colder months can affect our elderly relatives, friends and neighbours who might not be able to get out and about easily in the wind, ice or snow, so as well as looking after yourself and your

family, please do keep an eye out for vulnerable people nearby who may need extra help.

“Staying warm is really important too - wrap up when you go out and keep your house warm when you’re at home. Young children, the elderly, people with long-term conditions and those who care for vulnerable loved ones at home, are all eligible for a flu vaccination so if you’ve not had yours yet, check with your GP or pharmacist.” The ‘stay well’ healthcare advice from the Care Trust is being launched in time for SelfCare Week (18-24 November) which focuses on supporting self-care for people of all ages across local communities. The Care Trust is also partnering with Bradford District Council’s Living Well initiative and Age UK Bradford District for two local events during Self Care week, offering advice on staying well in winter. Community nurses and Age UK staff will be on hand to answer any questions: 10.00am - 2.00pm Monday 18 November, Airedale Shopping Centre BD21 3QQ 9.00am to 1.00pm Thursday 21 November, Broadway Shopping Centre, BD1 1JR Age UK Bradford District’s Director of Services Stephanie Smith commented: “Over the winter period we support an increased number of older people across the district who are struggling to maintain a warm home environment, and the ‘eat or heat’ deliberation is sadly very real. “This winter we are working in partnership with four other voluntary organisations to support vulnerable people to stay warm and well this winter. We’re looking forward to attending both of these events to talk to anyone who needs advice, so do pop along to see us.” If you are unable to attend either events but would like more information, visit the Trust’s ‘staywell’ web pages at www.bdct.nhs.uk/stay-well/ to learn more about how to keep yourself and your family well, or contact Age UK on 01274 391190 or www.ageuk.org.uk/bradforddistrict/

Bradford Teenager Dispels Myth Of Asian Boy Racers By Opening A Unique Snack Outlet

The common stereotypes of young Asian Muslim men in Bradford is that of boy racers, street gangs or turning to drugs. TV Programs like Hometown A Killing and Lost Boys continue to feed into this narrative, but one young man wants to prove that, that’s not the reality of young Pakistani men in Bradford. Fifteen-year-old Ibrahim Ai invited Asian Sunday to his brand new, store opening, based on Thornton Road in Bradford. The teenager is ambitious and wants to prove that Bradford’s young Asian men are hard working and have an entrepreneurial side that’s never spoken about or highlighted. From an early age Ibrahim has seen his father, Hasan Ali work hard and build a career in retail, with his most successful retail brand The Bazaar over the last decade. Ibrahim spent many evenings and weekends watching his mother and father graft away in retail both managing other market traders and their own café and market stall. Inspired by their work ethos and success, Ibrahim decided to start his own entrepreneurial journey.

The Titus Salt student wanted to own his own retail snack shop with a difference. He began following trends on social media site Instagram and there developed his spark for establishing his own snack shop - Snacks R Us Snacks R Us offers a wide range of snacks and confectionery that is not commonly available on the high street. Items such as a large bag of Cheetos Flamin Hot, breakfast cereals like Oreo cereal, strawberry Krispies and Reese’s puffs and a large range of soft drinks such as Chuppa Chupps, Millions, Mountain Dew along with the very popular Chocomel are available at the shop. These can be purchased on a retail or wholesale basis. Ibrahim was lucky he didn’t have to go far for investment, as both his parents loved his business plan and agreed to not only offer him some capital, but even provided their family owned retail premises, (which used to be a fabric store run by Hasan’s mum) to base his business from. In fact, the entire family is so proud of Ibrahim’s initiative that Ibrahim’s grandma (Hasan’s mum) also offered some investment for the business.

Loaded with the perfect investment and location, Ibrahim was further supported by his friends, who volunteered and help clean the place, and stack the shelves. The only question was, how Ibrahim juggled running the business with his studies, especially as he is currently doing his GCSE’s. “I work during weekends and most evenings, all other days my aunty helps to run the business, so that it doesn’t affect my studies” said Ibrahim. Ibrahim’s family and friends have really got behind him, to help make his vision a success.

“I am really proud though that my son is now running his business in the same premises that my mum ran her fabric business from. As a young child I remember spending my time in this shop helping my mum and now I will be spending some time here helping my son.” Asian Sunday wishes young Ebrahim and his new venture Snacks R Us all the best for the future. Snacks R Us is open Mon – Friday 7am – 8pm, Saturdays 12noon – 8pm and can be found on Facebook, Instagram and Snapchat.

“The response has been great so far, as everyone has come forward to offer their help and help me make Snacks R Us a huge success. Ibrahim told Asian Sunday “Some of my dad’s friends who have their own wholesale business have come forward to help out and get me the best deals, so I can offer them to my customers.” “Having this business will make me more responsible and hopefully give me focus in life. I think my friends are also very excited at my venture and having them supporting me means, we all have something more meaningful to work for in our spare time, rather than be hanging out with the wrong crowds.” “I want to be an example to other young Asian boys by showing that working hard is important and not only help set a good example for young Pakistani Muslim boys, but it will also be good for my future and my family. Ibrahim’s father, Hasan Ali said: “This was all his idea, his mum and I simply supported him with some financial backing. My mother is also very proud of Ibrahim and is supporting him in a generous way.

Award Winning Bradford Fundraiser Reaches £200k Fundraising Milestone After Returning from Successful Project in Malawai

By Raheema Khan

Raheema@asiansunday.co.uk Bradford’s charity hero Nazim Ali has just returned from a week-long, self-funded humanitarian aid trip to poverty stricken, Malawi in Southern Africa with international charity, Green Crescent Aid UK. The aim of the trip was to distribute various types of aid to the poor and needy in the remote and rural villages. In March 2019, Cyclone Idai caused widespread destruction in Malawi and neighbouring Mozambique. Nazim who has been doing charity work for more than two decades and has won many awards for his work was part of a four strong team known as team ‘Special K-hidma’ (which translates as servitude in Arabic) collectively raised a staggering £40,182.33 of which Nazim raised almost £12,000 (£11,829.68 to be precise) of that, bringing his individual fundraising total to over £200,000 over the last thirteen years. Nazim’s recent charity trip to Malawi was selffunded, meaning flights, accommodation and food was paid by team Special K-hidma, which allowed 100 percent of the £40k donations to go directly towards the aid, especially as the charity involved - Green Crescent Aid UK operate on a 100 per cent donation policy. Following more than 30 hours of travelling riding on just a couple of hours sleep and 30 plus degrees of heat Nazim and his team

‘Special K-hidma’ covered several remote and rural villages in Malawi distributing food parcels. The villages visited included: Chopi, Manguba, Milinjee, Chilambeh, Chinamwali and Lehlo villages. Hundreds of food parcels were delivered, which consisted of 40kg food parcels (10kg Rice, 10kg Maize flour, 5kg Beans, 5 litre Oil, 2kg Salt, 5kg Sugar, 3kg Ground nuts, 1 traditional cloth for women including sanitary products, expected to provide a family for at least one month. In addition to the food parcels more than 500 warm meals (rice, lamb meat and soft drink) was provided to the poor in Manguba and Chopi vilages. The team also held a couple of children’s parties which provided food to over 400 poor children including the distribution of over 1,500 packets of sweets generously donated by Bradford-based Saveco Cash & Carry and Ottoman Tea, Bar & Grill. The charitable distribution didn’t end there as a further 100 food bags (consisting of food, hygiene packs and sweets) were also given to pediatric patients in Balaka District Hospital along with crates of nappies, baby milk, and several hundred chitenjees (traditional clothing for Malawian women). More than 1,000 bottles of soft drinks and biscuits were also donated, including 60 living goats to widows and poor providing them with some sustainable livelihood. 500 pairs of footwear were given to children many of whom were walking barefoot and 600 pairs of footwear to the women. Special K-hidma’ team also opened three water wells and inspected a number of repaired houses which

were badly damaged by March’s Cyclone Idai.

life changing support, both in terms of food and shelter.

Donations didn’t just finish on food and clothing necessities, but also supporting education with 200 poetry books kindly donated by Keighley-based Abu Zahra Foundation. Donations are expected to continue in the coming weeks where hundreds of food parcels will continue to be distributed. Nazim told Asian Sunday: “Heading into the aid trip I was well aware that Malawi is the third poorest country in the world and has a high death rate due to water-borne diseases, HIV/Aids, malnutrition and general poor health. Over 60 per cent of the near 18 million population live under the international poverty line of £1 a day.

Amir Khan (Founder of Green Crescent Aid UK) said: “I am grateful to Nazim Ali, Faisal Khan and Adnan Hussain for all of their unstinting dedication and commitment in raising over £40,000 and their tireless efforts in distributing the aid. The aid will make a massive and life changing difference in one of the poorest countries in the world where clean water is a luxury that we in the UK take for granted.”

“Furthermore, it is estimated there is a GP for every 50,000 Malawians. I have visited war zones and places in which civilians have fled from war zones however, as a seasoned humanitarian and aid worker I was shocked at the poverty I witnessed in Malawi. Nazim shared many experiences of his charitable trip, which included visiting a family who lost their two-year-old son to malaria as they couldn’t get him to hospital in time to get treated. While giving sweets out children would look at the sweets they received with vacant expressions, as they had never seen or had sweets before. Overall though the Bradford man said his experience was humbling as people from the villages would come out to greet him and the team and be grateful for the donations and

Adnan Hussain (Head Volunteer of Green Crescent Aid UK) said; “This was my first deployment and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I was saddened by the poverty I saw and was overwhelmed by the love and appreciation the team received from the Malawians.” Faisal Khan said: “We have a lot to be grateful for in the UK such as having footwear and clean water which many Malawians don’t have. The highlight was seeing so many happy faces particularly the children. I and the team are grateful to all of our donors for all their support.” Donors can view some of the Malawi aid trip videos on my ‘Nazim Ali' YouTube Channel by following this link https://youtube.com/channel/UCIMKv7hIGW7HUnSAGsrTww For more information on volunteering or donating contact Amir Khan on 07786545260.

Midlands Langar Seva Partners With Bradford Community For Weekly Langar

By Fatima Patel

Editor@asiansunday.co.uk Last month, despite heavy rains and darker days Bradford saw the arrival of the Midlands Langar Seva Bus in Centenary Square. Midlands Langar Seva (MLS) established in October 2013 and was founded by Randhir Singh and best friend Parmjit Singh in Wallsall, West Midlands. The purpose of MLS was to bring the concept of the langar from the Gurdwara to the streets and help the needy and homeless. Langar is a free community kitchen and was set up by the founder of Sikhism, Guru Nanak Dev Ji, to break down the caste system and be equal. This year Sikhs across the globe will be celebrating 550 years of Sikhism. The story of the Sikhism founder began in 1481

where at the age of 12, he was offered 20 rupees from his father, Mehta Kalu to use the money to do a “Sacha Sauda” or to “strike a good bargain” meaning get into a profitable trading situation.

Gurdwara named Gurdwara Sacha Sauda. This is how this tradition of Langar (serving of free food) started in Punjab and this is the message that MLS wish to spread across the world.

Instead of doing a worldly “good bargain”, the Guru bought food with the money he had, and distributed everything among the local sadhus (holy people), who had not eaten anything for days. When his father asked him what happened to the money?

Asian Sunday caught up with Parmjit Singh during his Bradford visit, he told us that the MLS is now working in 24 different locations in the UK and has a global base in countries such as Delhi, Canada, Bangkok and Germany.

He replied that he had done a “True business” by feeding the hungry holy men. His father was very angry that his son had wasted the money and scolded him. However, his elder sister, Mata Nanki stood by her dear brother and strongly defended his actions. Such noble actions of the young Nanak and his refusal to hoard worldly wealth indicated that he was no ordinary man, but one who was destined to be a true Guru, a spiritual teacher of mankind. Today, at the place where Guru Nanak had fed the poor, stands a

“When we started, we served just 16 meals, we have now served more than 28500 meals internationally.” Said Par mjit. “So, all we have done is take Guru Nanak Devji’s concept of langar from the Gurdwara to the streets and take it to the needy. “We are really pleased to be in Bradford and show the world what Guru Nanak Devji’s message is.” Parmjit was joined by more than a dozen volunteers, one included Bradford man Harjot

Singh, who works in Shipley. Harjot Singh said: We have a lot of sewadars in Bradford. Sewadar is anyone that is coming out and giving time for free to serve the community - helping the public in anyway shape or form. “There should be no one saying, ‘I’m better than you’, ‘I’m lower than you’, ‘I’m higher than you’. We should treat everyone exactly the same. “MLS was designed to uphold the principle of equality among all people, regardless of religion, caste, colour, creed, age, gender or social status. “It was to be equal and to love and respect everybody” “We will be here every Friday and distribute to the general public from 630 – 730pm. It’s raining but it hasn’t stopped us, we are waterproof when it comes to sewa.

Four Generations Come Together To Celebrate 107th Birthday Of Bradford Woman

By Raheema Khan

Raheema@asiansunday.co.uk Four generations of family, friends and community leaders gathered earlier this month to celebrate the 107th birthday of Mrs Kartari Chand. Mrs Chand turned 107 on 1 November, she is the widow of Mr Karam Chand, who died at age 110. Mr and Mrs Chand had held the record for the world’s oldest married couple and their life had been celebrated by many across the globe. Teenage Kartari married Karam in India in 1925 and they both moved to the UK in 1965. Mr Chand began working in the local wool mills before the pair retired in Girlington, Bradford. The couple have eight children, 27 grand children and many great grandchildren. Karam Chand died from natural causes in

hospital in October 2016, he was just six weeks away from his 111th birthday. Mrs Kartari continues to live with her youngest son, Paul, and seems to continue to enjoy life. Paul speaking on behalf of his mum told Asian Sunday the secret to the success of my parent’s marriage was down to ‘giving love a chance’ and the care of a good family, which is rare today, but we are blessed to have them as our role models.”

Celebrating Guru Nanak Gurupurab and Marking 550th anniversary of Sikhism founder Yorkshire is home to six gurdwaras, with Sikhs making up six per cent of Yorkshire’s population. Sikhs are active in business and are involved in many community and charitable projects. Sikhs across the globe will be celebrating Guru Nanak Gurupurab on 12 November Guru Nanak Gurupurab also known as Guru Nanak Jayanti and Guru Nanak Prakash Utsav is dedicated to the first Sikh Guru - Guru Nanak Devji and is one of the most auspicious and celebrated days in the Sikh calendar. This year’s celebration will be extra special as this year will mark the 550th birth anniversary of the founder of Sikhism. Guru Nanak Devji was born on 15 April 1469, in a village called Rai Bhoi di Talwandi, (now popularly known as Nankana Sahib, near Lahore in Pakistan). Guru Nanak Dev ji is regarded as a spiritual teacher who founded

Sikhism in the 15th century. He started writing the Guru Granth Sahib and wrote 974 hymns in it. The main verses from the Guru Granth Sahib elaborate that the creator of the universe was one. His verses also propagate selfless service to humanity, prosperity and social justice for all irrespective of any demographic differences. Sikhism also forbids the concept of messengers and reincarnation. The role of a Guru as a spiritual and social master forms the base of Sikh religion. Celebrations for Gurpurab traditionally start two days prior to the main occasion. The three-day festival begins with an early Prabhat Pheris (early morning processions) at the gurudwaras and then proceed to the localities with Sikh devotees singing hymns. It is led by Panj Pyaras or Nagarkirtan (the five beloved ones), who carry the Sikh flag, known as the

Nishan Sahib and the palanquin of Guru Granth Sahib. Also, traditionally, an Akhand Path or the 48hour non-stop reading of Guru Granth Sahib – the holy text where the teachings of Guru Nanak Dev are preserved – is organised at the Gurdwaras. Some of the popular prayers are – Japji Sahid and Sidh-Ghost. The holy book of the Sikhs also involved the sayings of all the 10 gurus. On the main day of the occasion, devotees wake up early in the morning and sing Asa-diVar and other morning hymns from the Sikh scriptures. In the Gurudwaras, priests recite poems in praise of Guru Nanak Devji. Langar or free community lunch is served in the afternoon to celebrate life and prophecy of Guru Nanak Jayanti. Gatka, a special type of martial art is performed by the people on this occasion with a sword.

This year has particularly been significant for the Sikh community as this was also the year that saw the Kartarpur corridor inaugurated. Shri Darbar Sahib Gurdwara, Kartarpur or Kartarpur Sahib holds special importance in Sikhism. Kartarpur Corridor, which is a border corridor between Pakistan and India, connecting the Sikh shrines of Dera Baba Nanak Sahib and Gurdwara Darbar Sahib, was inaugurated on 9 November in commemoration to Guru Nanak Dev Ji’s 550th birth anniversary. The corridor is intended to allow religious devotees from India to visit the Gurdwara in Kartarpur, 4.7 kilometres from the PakistanIndia border, without a visa. Asian Sunday would like to wish the local and global Sikh community a very happy Gurupurab

Editor@asiansunday.co.uk If you grew up in the eighties, then you will have experienced the euphoria of Bollywood’s Shahenshah Amitabh Bachchan and it wasn’t just the desi’s who had a grand love affair with the superstar but people of many backgrounds and nationalities. I remember growing up, spending time helping in my parent’s in their corner shop and we would have Bollywood film magazines displayed, and as customers walked in, who were of all races, they would instantly recognise Amitabh Bachchan on the cover. In fact one young white British student went as far as buying all of Mr Bachchans film music cassettes (for those who grew up in the 2000’s these are the devices we who grew up pre2000 used to listen music on) The young student declared his ultimate favourite song from the film Amar Akbar Anthony – ‘ My name is Anthony Gonsalves…’ Amitabh Bachchan became well known as the angry young man and still continues his

reign as everyone’s Big B and the Shahenshah of Bollywood.

such as Brahmastra, Gulabo Sitabo, Jhund, Chehre and Hera Pheri 3 in his kitty.

The superstar grew up initially names as Inquilab Shrivastava, but his father later changed his name to Amitabh Bachchan, at the suggestion of fellow poet Sumitranandan Pant and adopting Bachchan as the surname which was used by his father as a pen name for his work.

Bachchan’s fan following is such that every Sunday they gather outside the gates of Jalsa (Amitabh’s home) to gather a glimpse of their Shahenshah. If Bachchan is home fnas are sure to receive a greeting from him normally in the evening around 5:30pm to 6:00pm.

The 77-year-old actor began his career with 1969’s ‘Saat Hindustani’ and gained popularity in the 1970s after working in films such as ‘Zanjeer,’ ‘Deewaar’ and the blockbuster ‘Sholay’.

Bachchan’s has always had an overwhelming response from his legion of die-hard fans. This was particularly noted when Bachchan was hospitalized following an accident on the sets of his film Coolie in 1982.

Amitabh has worked in more than 190 Indian films and bagged an enormous amount, of awards and accolades including most recently the prestigious Dadasaheb Phalke Award and being honoured with the Padma Vibhushan – India’s second highest civilian honour in 2015.

During a fight sequence Bachchan hurt himself as he tried landing on table. The corner of the table struck his abdomen, resulting in a splenic rupture from which he lost a significant amount of blood. He required an emergency splenectomy and remained critically ill in hospital for many months, at times close to death.

While his last outing on the big screen was Badla, Bachchan currently hosts India’s version of who wants to be a millionaire – Kaun Banega Crorepati and has a string of films

The overwhelming public response included prayers in temples and offers to sacrifice limbs to save him, while later, there were long queues of well-wishing fans outside the

hospital where he was recuperating. The super stardom witnessed for Bachchan has been like no other and as he celebrates 50 years in the Hindi film industry, the world once again unites to remember the great body of work and many milestones the angry young man of the 80’s has achieved. Son Abhishek Bachchan was also among the millions of fans who took to social media to celebrate the half a century achievement of Amitabh Bachchan. Along with a throwback picture of the actor, Abhishek wrote, “Not just as a son, but as an actor and a fan... We are all blessed to witness greatness! There is so much to admire, to learn and even more to appreciate. Several generations of cinema lovers get to say we lived in the times of BACHCHAN!!! Congratulations Pa on completing 50 years in the Film industry. We now await the next 50! Love you.” Here’s celebrating five decades of the living legend Amitabh Bachchan.

Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) Therapy PRP is the new treatment being offered at Prity Beauty & Spa Salon for hair and skin restoration. The procedure provides reliable results with a very quick recovery period. It is perfect for clients looking for a cheaper alternative and a quick and simple procedure. You may have heard of platelet-rich plasma therapy (PRP), but you may not actually know much about it. What is PRP used for? What are the benefits of PRP? Who can be a candidate for PRP? Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) is an established injection therapy to enhance tissue regeneration. PRP is concentrated blood plasma that contains about 3 to 5 times the number of platelets found in normal blood. PRP Therapy is an excellent treatment that uses a small amount of your own blood to stimulate the production of collagen and new skin cells. This technique has a long history within orthopaedics medicine and

reconstructive surgery, however in recent years the treatment has become more widely popularised within the cosmetic industry. Studies suggest that it can also serve as an effective and safe treatment for treating hair loss in both men and women. PRP is the same treatment that is done on the face as vampire facelift to reduce acne scars, wrinkles, lines and helps in building collagen. Blood contains cells, serums and platelets. PRP therapy utilises these natural properties to assist the skin in appearing younger and PRP hair restoration uses your plasma to target the regrowth of your hair follicles. Once we have taken a sample of your blood, it is spun through a machine to separate the cells, serums and platelets. The platelets are extracted and injected into the area of treatment, causing a tiny amount of clotting around the injected area. This stimulates the release of growth factors, which causes the regeneration of new, healthier, firmer and more youthful skin tissue. The therapy can be used on any part of the body and is especially effective on: fine lines and wrinkles, loss of volume to the face, crow’s feet, dark circles, smoker’s lines, neck lines and décolletage, and ageing hands. This treatment assists in the rejuvenation of different conditions such as: • • •

Has The Influx Of Online Dating Apps Helped The Process Of Finding A Potential Spouse? As wedding season unwinds from its peak, one of the questions that always gets asked is where/how the couple met. Although there is still a slight taboo of saying you met online it is a popular and convenient method of finding a suitable match. Busy lifestyles and commitments make finding a rishta more complicated and after a while of meeting new perspective matches nearly every weekend (when parents and aunties are looking) it can become a chore especially when working full time, weekends and days off are precious! The alternative of spending 15 mins online and listing all your strengths, likes , dislikes and aspirations saves not only time and hassle it means that when a perspective match comes across your profile they can get all the important information and can decide if they want to pursue you and hopefully will have the info to start a conversation. Looking at some of the top matrimonial and match sites some of the tips to make the best first impression are: 1. Be a natural representation of who you really are. It is easy to build a persona online that is always fun and positive and dressed to impress but the reality is that everyone has their normal make-up free and casual days. 2. Don’t be afraid to list things you can’t compromise on early especially if it means certain habits, re-locating to another city or region and religious obligations. 3. Do list your qualities and achievements as it builds character. If for example, you’re a nurse who likes baking and has a black belt in taekwondo it’s worth a mention. 4. Spend time on sharing who you are. Looking at profiles online of men and women who are searching for long term commitment its quickly apparent that people are not keen to create a full profile but rather have perspective

matches contact them on the phone. This is adequate if your new to online searching but for people who’ve been looking for a while it can be repetitive and monotonous to introduce yourself again and again to many different matches. By creating a full profile, which doesn’t mean you have to share pictures right away, rather to be writing and expressing yourself for the purposes of finding your future husband or wife you are saying that you are investing your time into describing your qualities, interests, requirements and are committed to finding the right match. Keep it concise yet enough to get the person reading want to know more...! Technology has made meeting potential husbands and wives much easier but it’s not without its pitfalls. Catfishing - luring someone with a fake profile, lonely/board individuals who are already in long term relationships and just for fun time wasters are rife and not easy to spot. While it is not possible to completely filter such folks there are some security measures to bear in mind. • A specialised service. It may seem that you are limiting your pool but the positives of this are that all your potential matches are more closer to your requirements and the frustration of having to make introductions to 10 people and only 2 are actually what you specified is greatly reduced. • Privacy features. Not all sites and apps have stringent privacy features especially for image security. If this is something you are worried about or are looking on behalf of a brother, sister etc then check if there are options to only share pictures once adequate information has been shared with both parties and limiting audiences. This also reduces the risk of people using your image for identity fraud. • Paying a subscription. Only a very committed fraudster will go to the trouble of setting up a monthly direct debit and take advantage of people’s good intentions. Paying a service to

unlock further features ensures that no more than a few details are unlocked to non-paying members. Limiting your profile only to serious members. While there is a lot of hope and success stories of finding love and life partners online it’s not for everyone and the recent trend for swiping left or right has made finding a suitable longterm partner seem transactional and purely based on appearance rather than personality, values and life goals. However, using a bit of caution with common sense can make the search easier and the convenience of using multiple platforms means you can widen the parameters and hopefully find the man or woman of your destiny. If this topic has you thinking, and you don’t mind sharing your thoughts or experiences please get in touch via saba@asainsunday. co.uk

Top 5 Tips To Prevent Burglaries As the days get smaller, darker and winter creeps in, we become easy prey for burglaries. So, what's the right course of action to be burglar safe? Well as they say preventative measures are always better. Here are our top 5 tips to stay relatively secure this winter. Step No 1: Secure the Doors Don't help a burglar stroll in through the front door (according to statistics more than 30% of them do!) Inspect all of your exterior doors to make sure the door frames are strong, the hinges are protected, and—if your door has a mail slot—that someone can't reach through it to unlock the door. Here are the quick reinforcements we recommend to help you shore up these vital entryways. Install a deadbolt. Add a strike plate. Upgrade to smart locks. Boost security with a video doorbell. Step No 2: Lock the Windows

Doors and windows are the most common entry points for burglars. Unfortunately, manufacturer latches on windows aren’t always effective— and sometimes they’re downright flimsy. If you don’t like the looks of your window latches, beef up security with locks or key-operated levers. But you don’t have to stop there. whether you live in a flat or a mansion. Step No 3: Light Up the Landscape Vandals, burglars, and other criminals don’t like to be in the spotlight. Keep bad folks at bay with ample outdoor lighting. Place lights around your front and back yards, along pathways, and near the garage and other outdoor structures. Not only will you make intruders skittish, you’ll also cut down your risk of a stumble on your way up the front steps. Step No 4 (Don't Forget the Garage) This entry point to your home is becoming more popular with criminals. And even if they can’t access your house, chances are you

have plenty of good stuff stored in the garage. Make it a habit to lock all doors to the garage—both interior and exterior. You may also consider keeping your garage door opener in the house. That way a burglar can’t grab it out of your car. And if you use a security code to open the garage, make sure you keep it secret and never enter it in front of delivery people, neighbors, or anyone else.

and when you go out. Fit security locks if need be. Follow these steps and the chances are you will never have to face the dilemma of what to do when a burglar breaks in.

Sacrifice a holiday to pay for your security. We all have a responsibility to protect ourselves, our families and our possessions. Don't let the thieves win.

Step No 5: Set Up a Security System Your new home should have some form of a security system, whether it’s a basic DIY system or one that comes with professional monitoring and home automation. Today there are plenty of home security options for every budget and every level of protection. To choose a system that you’re comfortable with, evaluate the needs of your neighborhood and your house. You can contact your local police department for neighborhood crime statistics and help doing a home security evaluation of your home And now for the obvious: close your windows and doors at night

Wills, Lasting Powers Of Attorney, And Planning It is somewhat alarming to highlight that many families could be forced to unravel estates wound up years ago after Lloyds Banking Group discovered a vast trove of old wills it could not match to customers. Lloyds unveiled the large blunder that has taken place, which was revealed by the Financial Times, which has left the bank scrambling to unite 9,000 plus families with loves ones wills. The main concern for me is that people trust just one entity, and leave their most important documents with one solicitor, bank etc. leaving them, and their loved ones vulnerable. The classic mistake detailed above could have major implications for beneficiaries that have benefited from the above wills, when the will might have changed, and Lloyds

hold the revised wills. Now in most cases the wills that Lloyds holds are probably superseded by a revised will; therefore, the damage caused by the blunder might not be severe. The issue that I have is that a will should be updated every few years to take into account financial circumstances, and ensure proper planning has taken place of your affairs. This is because if financial affairs are not reviewed, then this might cause inheritance tax implictations; therefore, your beneficiaries end up with less from your estate. In my opinion most importantly alongside a will you should have a Lasting Power of Attorney, alongside your will. This is because a will takes into account your financial affairs once you have passed; whereas, a Lasting Power of Attorney ensures if

something happens, and you are no longer able to make decisions about your finances or your health. This can be especially important if you hold joint assets as the assets may not be able to be sold without the consent of the Court of Protection which could lead to considerable financial hardship for them and you, until their deputyship is processed and granted by the Court of Protection. Occasionally the Court of Protection may reject someone’s application to become a deputy for someone who’s lost their mental capacity. In this case, it will appoint the local authority (which usually means the donor’s local council) to make those decisions instead. This can be especially traumatic for families. So, in terms of planning if you own a

business, or have joint assets, then in my opinion financial advice, as well as legal advice is required to put your affairs in order. Why plan? Well if you plan your affairs properly, then it means on your death your loved ones do not suffer, and it avoids

arguments in the family. Your wishes are also acted upon, and usually if you have sought financial/legal advice you will more than likely pay less tax than if you simply chose to ignore your affairs throughout your lifetime.

Don’t Be Left High And Dry The case of Kings Court Trust Limited v Lancashire Cleaning Services Limited highlights the difficulties that a company can face upon the death of a sole director and shareholder.

If the director/shareholder was to die unexpectedly there would be no executive officer available to run the company. In the above case, Mr Pilling was the sole director and shareholder of a cleaning company who suddenly died. Before his death, Mr Pilling had prepared a will appointing executors to administer his estate. However the company’s Articles of Association did not allow the executors to appoint a director on the death of Mr Pilling. Without a Grant of Probate, the executors had no legal authority to appoint a director or to make

emergency application to the High Court asking the Court to intervene by using its statutory powers to order rectification of the Register of Members to include the names of the executors. This would then allow the executors to pass a written resolution to appoint a new director.

The Court granted the Order sought by the executors although the Judge stressed that he only did so due to the exceptional circumstances of the case. Had it not been the extreme urgency caused by the frozen bank account then it is likely that the executors would have been told by the Court to wait until probate was granted. Companies

ayyaz@asiansunday.co.uk

Award winning Prity’s Beauty & Spa Salon is no stranger to celebrities, and it seems since Deontay Wilder visited to have, what is now well known as the ‘Wilder’ facial, demand is high for the mesotherapy based facial treatment. Since launching the men’s facial treatment Prity’s have been flooded with bookings, which included a booking from local boxer and WBA continental boxing champion Qais Ashfaq.

The Wilder facial costs £175 and includes: • • • • •

Skin feels amazing, perfect for going on holiday next week.” The 26-year-old went on to tell people to ‘definitely give it a try’ Prity told Asian Sunday: “Men, especially those who do a lot of sports tend to put their skin and body through so much, that it’s important to have treatments like mesotherapy to rejuvenate and bring back energy and hydrate the skin. I am so pleased the ‘Wilder’ facial is becoming popular with men and they are taking care of their skin and well-being. “Qais Ashfaq is a lovely person and it was lovely to do the treament on him. Federer Ousts Djokovic To Reach Semis At ATP Finals By AYYAZ MALIK

ayyaz@asiansunday.co.uk The 38-year-old Roger Federer took a clinical win over long-time arch rival Novak Djokovic in London, reaching his 16th semifinal out of 17 appearances at ATP World Tour Finals. The defeat also meant that Djokovic could not challenge Rafael Nadal’s world number one position, seeing the Spaniard finishing as yearend world number one for the fifth time. Ahead of the 49th encounter between the two great players, Djokovic held a 26-22 advantage and won the last five meetings, including their five-set final at this year’s Wimbledon Championships, Xinhua news reports. But Federer dominated O2 Arena’s indoor court on Thursday night, breaking Djokovic three times and only facing break point once. The Swiss legend wrapped it up 6-4, 6-3 after 73 minutes.

“I played incredibly, and I knew I had to because that’s what Novak does and I was able to produce. So it was definitely magical,” Federer said. Two days ago, Djokovic suffered a painful loss to Dominic Thiem, who came from behind to edge the in-form Serbian 7-6 (5), 6-3 and 7-6 (5). “Mentally it was tough to lose a match like that a few nights ago,” said Djokovic. “I started off this tournament amazingly. I felt great. Won Paris. Played really well. Just probably things kind of shifted in terms of the way I feel on the court, and my confidence level wasn’t high today, so Roger could sense that and he used it very well.” Federer was second in Group Bjorn Borg behind Austrian Dominic Thiem. He will face the winner of Group Andre Agassi on Saturday. Tournament debutant Stefanos Tsitsipas leads Group Andre Agassi with two consecutive wins and has booked a semifinal berth.

Racism; The Unwelcome Guest In The World Of Sport By AYYAZ MALIK

ayyaz@asiansunday.co.uk

When you think of sport, many things come to your mind. Excitement, adrenalin, passion and drama are just some of the adjectives that can be used, but unfortunately the world of sport has a very bad ‘disease’ it’s suffering from at the moment. The “disease” of racism. In recent times, racism has welcomed itself back into prominence in sporting arenas (but it’s not very welcome at all). Matches involving Liverpool and Manchester United, United and Crystal Palace, Man U vs Wolves, have all been affected. When I say affected, what I am referring to is that players of an ethnic origin, Messers Pogba, Abraham (Chelsea striker) and Rashford have been subject to online abuse, after both Rashford and Pogba missed costly penalties earlier this season. British Asian Hamza Chaudhry of Leicester City was also subject to vile racist abuse. If you’re a student of sporting knowledge like myself or have had enough life experience to witness the 70’s and 80’s, the natural observation is that such abuse was disgraceful and demonstrated a complete ignorance on the perpetrators part. The general consensus was that although not completely gone, the problem, the “disease” that is racism has been nullified almost. Sadly, this isn’t the case, and it’s become very apparent in football matches that the “prehistoric” times ar e back.

seen doing (that only some of their fans of course and not all).

incidents which happened to have involved England players.

After this match, England said they wanted to do their talking on the pitch, arguably did that with a 6-0 win. The biggest victory it could be said was off the pitch when it was announced that seven men were arrested after the fall of the racist events in Sofia. that matter of racism and the outcry, in turn, saw Bulgaria’s prime minister intervene in this matter, and it was the prime minister himself who demanded the Bulgarian head of FA Broislov Mikhailov to resign, which he duly did.

Sadly, (although not all of their fans are like this) Australia were the team England were facing on both occasions when the racist incident happened. The first case was when former left-arm spinner Monty Panesar was subjected to taunts.

Those consequential actions of Bulgaria from politician to football chief down may have demonstrated just how big of a fall out this is, but this is only just one small way to tackling the issue. England vs Bulgaria may be a high-profile example of a match which involved racism, but it’s a bit lower down the footballing ladder, I want to discuss here. A match between Haringey and Yeovil, an FA Cup qualifier wouldn’t be a match where with the greatest respect, it wouldn’t catch the public eye on a grand scale.

Archer who has an English father, it’s alleged was racially abused by a fan at Old Trafford. Admirably the ground staff and security were able to eject the man swiftly. Here are just some of the examples of sport’s racism problem. Thought sport’s problem with racism had gone? Sadly, we have all been pretty much fooled.

After a move by Haringey to walk off the pitch after the 64th minute due to some shocking abuse, but the club came in the limelight, in a way that the London club wouldn’t have intended. Haringey’s goalkeeper, Douglas Pajetat was allegedly subjected to this disgraceful abuse. Haringey decided to walk off the pitch after their manager Tom Loizou said some of his players were “frightened” after hearing the abuse in close quarters.

England’s Raheem Sterling, Tyrone Mings and Marcus Rashford were just some of the players that were targeted. In line with UEFA protocol, the announcement of the abandonment of the match if things didn’t improve was announced over the tannoy system.

Thankfully the Metropolitan Police are looking into the matter. Not just for football, but for society, on the whole, the hope would be for arrests to be made. Two men aged 23 and 26, have been remanded in police custody. Sadly, football isn’t the only sport who has had to deal with issues of racist behaviour by fans. Football has been able to punish players like John Terry, or Luis Suarez for alleged racism taunts/chants, but in 2019, there always seems to be another tale to tell where a sports player is getting judged, prejudiced by the colour of his/her skin. Desperate times indeed.

This didn’t deter some of Bulgaria’s fans. T-shirts mocking UEFA’S respect campaign and Nazi salutes were just some of the offensive gestures that Bulgaria’s fans were

Cricket, forever associated with being a gentleman’s sport, but even cricket itself hasn’t been immune from racism. Two incidents which come to my mind are both

Other high-profile incidents were when England went to Bulgaria, who themselves have been punished by footballs governing body UEFA. With the Eastern European side, having this punishment on their record if you like, sadly it didn’t deter their fans.

The Aussies, could turn around and site this incident down to sledging, but to make an alleged insulting remark about someone’s heritage is sledging? Would you disagree? The other incident was this summer and that involved England’s new-found gem Joffra Archer.

Barcelona and Real Madrid will face each other at Camp Nou for the first El Clasico of the 2019-20 season on December 18, La Liga confirmed recently By AYYAZ MALIK

ayyaz@asiansunday.co.uk

The two sides were originally scheduled to face off on October 26, but the La Liga showdown was postponed by the Spanish football federation due to security concerns, Goal.com reported. This will be Barca’s penultimate game of 2019 and the team will be looking to continue their run of great results against their biggest rivals, including a 5-1 win at Camp Nou and 1-0 win at the Santiago Bernabeu last season, as well as knocking the all-whites out of the Copa del

Rey. Barcelona and Real Madrid are levelled on 25 points at the top of La Liga after 12 matches this season, with the former leading on goal difference.

Dhon and Dusted? By AYYAZ MALIK

ayyaz@asiansunday.co.uk

When one thinks of Indian cricket players Mahendra Singh Dhoni, words like inspirational, cool, calm, “excellent leader” and many other superlatives come to mind. To use such words do have their justifications too. Former Indian skipper MS Dhoni, it has been announced, won’t be included in the upcoming T20 squad against local rivals Bangladesh. Dhoni, who has retired from tests, but still was available for limited overs matches, hasn’t played since the agonising semi-final defeat to New Zealand in the 2019 Cricket world cup. The Chennai Super Kings skipper had been called up for military service,

and the 2007 world cup winning captain had been doing his service for his country in his time of leave, but MSK Prasad (one of the selectors of the Indian team), has arguably made a massive call and opted for the younger Rishabh Pant of Dehli Daredevils to take the gloves for the foreseeable future.

A big call considering the stature of the man in question, This MSD, three-time IPL winning captain. Let's not forget the trophy-laden years of his captaincy after replacing “the wall Rahul Dravid” after the doomed 2003 world cup. The 2007 world cup victory followed by 2011 50 over world cup glory as well as the 2013 champions trophy triumph. Here are examples of his leadership bringing success, but let's not

forget cricket fans, the monster six which Dhoni hit on the way to an impressive 91 not out against Sri Lanka in that final of 2011.

Mahendra Dhoni has the legendary ability to finish a match off with a six, the former captain would do this at will almost. Moments like the ones mentioned were what gave MSD the nickname “the finisher”, but sadly age catches up with all, finisher”, a harsh life reality. Former captain Dhoni has been no different. In fact, the demise of the Chennai captain Dhoni has been a sad site I am afraid. The match against England where India lost in bizarre circumstances (still having five wickets finisher” was, left) showed that “the finisher” unfortunately, the not even started one. An icon and legend that he was, it seemed a very controversial call, for MS Dhoni to be called up for the world cup this year, especially with Pant impressing for many years in the IPL, but rather crucially in the International arena too. The 38-year old Dhoni will be some act to follow if this does mean the end for the wicket-keeper batsmen, (most likely it will be). Dhoni played 98 T20 internationals, 90 tests and a whopping 350 one-day internationals. Mahendra leaves quite some legacy behind, the 38-year old in ODI cricket scored 10,773 runs, which included 10 hundred’s. As impressive as those hundred’s. numbers were the Chennai man has struggled for form and as sad as it is to see him go, if indeed this is truly the end (which looks highly likely), it should be greeted with happiness that Rishabh Pant is claiming his place in the Indian batting line up, as well as the wicket keepers gloves. door”, archIn other news across, “next door”, rivals have dispersed of their wicketkeeper batsmen too, with the news that star batsmen Babar Azam is to take charge of the Pakistan T20 side and batsmen Azhar Ali, of the test side, a decision on the one-day side is to be discussed in due course. Former skipper, Sarfraz Ahmed also a wicket-keeper batsman, has not only lost his place in the side to Mohammed Rizwan, but also the captaincy of all three formats. It’s all change in the Asian sub-content. It’s The Sports desk at Asian Sunday will keep you up to date with it all.
