CLIMATE CHANGE 'DOUBLE WHAMMY' COULD KILL OFF FISH SPECIES: STUDY New research by the University of Reading scientists suggests that fish like sardines, pilchards and herring will struggle to keep pace with accelerating climate change as warmer waters reduce their size, and therefore their ability to relocate to more suitable environments The study, published in the journal Nature Climate Change, also provides the first evidence to counter the scientific theory that decreased movement will result in more species, by suggesting the opposite is true. This means many species will also be less able to evolve to cope with warmer temperatures, increasing their risk of dying out. Professor Chris Venditti, an evolutionary biologist at the University of Reading, and co-author of the study said "Warming waters are a double whammy for fish, as they not only cause them to evolve to a smaller size, but also reduce their ability to move to more suitable environments. "Our research supports the theory that fish will get smaller as oceans

warm under climate change but reveals the worrying news that they will also not be able to evolve to cope as efficiently as first thought. With sea temperatures rising faster than ever, fish will very quickly get left behind in evolutionary terms and struggle to survive. "This has serious implications for all fish and our food security, as many of the species we eat could become increasingly scarce or even nonexistent in decades to come." The study, led by the Center for

Advanced Studies in Arid Zones (CEAZA) in Chile and the University of Reading in the UK, used statistical analyses of a large dataset of globally distributed fish species to study their evolution over the past 150 million years. The study provides the first solid evidence of how historical global temperature fluctuations have affected the evolution of these species. It focused on Clupeiforms -- a highly diverse group of fish found all over the world, which includes important species for fisheries, such as anchovies, Atlantic herring, Japanese pilchard, Pacific herring, and South American pilchard. However, the findings have implications for all fish. Fish have thus far only had to deal with a maximum average ocean temperature rise of around 0.8°C per millennium. This is far lower than current warming rates reported by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration of 0.18°C per decade since 1981. The findings support the long-held

expectation among scientists that fish will generally get smaller and move less as the world warms, due to having to increase their metabolism and therefore needing more oxygen to sustain their body functions. This will impact fish species because larger fish are able to travel longer distances owing to their greater energy reserves, whereas smaller fish are less able to seek out new environments with favourable conditions as the climate changes. However, the research contradicts the assumption that an increase in smaller fish will mean more new species emerging because of concentrating genetic variations within local areas. Instead, the scientists found warmer waters would lead to fewer new species developing, robbing fish of another of their key weapons to cope with climate change. Overfishing has also been found to make fish smaller in size, so the new study adds to the list of pressures they face as a consequence of human actions.

UK RECORDS HIGHEST DAILY COVID-RELATED DEATH TOLL SINCE MARCH The UK reported another 170 coronavirus-related deaths, the highest number of fatalities recorded in one day since March 12, according to official figures released on Tuesday 17 August. The total number of coronavirus-related deaths in Britain now stands at 131,149. These figures only include the deaths of people who died within 28 days of their first positive test, Xinhua news agency reported. Another 26,852 people in Britain have

tested positive for Covid-19, bringing the total number of coronavirus cases in the country to 6,322,241. The latest data came as Britain's Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) approved the use of the Moderna Covid-19 vaccine for the 12 to 17-year-olds. "I am pleased to confirm that the Covid-19 vaccine made by Moderna has now been authorized in 12-17-yearolds. The vaccine is safe and effective in this age group," said June Raine,

MHRA Chief Executive in a statement. "It is for the Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunization (JCVI) to advise on whether this age group should be vaccinated with the Covid-19 vaccine made by Moderna as part of the deployment program," said Raine. Nearly 90 per cent of the adults in Britain have received a Covid-19 vaccine, while more than 77 per cent have had the second jab, according to the latest figures.

BRITISH AIRWAYS ANNOUNCES ADDITIONAL FLIGHTS FROM INDIA TO LONDON

British Airways has increased flights from India to the UK from 10 to 20 per week from 16 August. The decision came as the UK government moved

India to an amber list. "British Airways will now operate 20 direct return flights across Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru and Hyderabad

providing convenient options for customers wanting to travel to London, Heathrow," British Airways said in a statement. Earlier, the UK government moved India from 'red' list to 'amber' list on August 8. In addition, the Indian government allowed UK carriers to operate additional flights, increasing the weekly cap from 15 to 34 per week. "It is wonderful to see connections between India and London being restored after months of uncertainty caused by the global pandemic. These additional new flights will allow our Indian customers, who have waited so patiently, to reunite with their loved ones. The flights also provide new travel options for Indian students wishing to travel to the UK and beyond

for further studies, ahead of the start of a new academic year," said Moran Birger, British Airways' Head of Sales for South Asia, Middle East and Africa. Customers booking with British Airways are able to exchange their booking for a voucher or move their dates without incurring a change fee, read the statement. "To help customers navigate the changing entry requirement and facilitate a seamless journey, they can choose to download the VeriFLY app before departing to London. The digital health app allows customers to combine their travel verification documents and Covid-19 test results in one place and confirms their eligibility with a few simple steps," the statement added.

FB'S ACQUISITION OF GIF SEARCH ENGINE GIPHY HITS UK ROADBLOCK The top UK anti-trust regulator has said that Facebook's takeover of popular GIF search engine Giphy raises competition concerns and if its concerns are confirmed, it could require Facebook to unwind the deal and sell off Giphy in its entirety. Facebook said last year that it was acquiring Giphy for nearly $400 million. The UK's Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) said in a statement late last week that following an in-depth investigation, it has provisionally found that Facebook's takeover of Giphy will negatively impact competition between social media platforms. "Alternatively, it could change the terms of this access - for example, Facebook could require Giphy customers, such as TikTok, Twitter and Snapchat, to

provide more user data in order to access Giphy GIFs," the CMA said in a statement. Such actions could increase Facebook's market power, which is already significant. The CMA's analysis suggests that Facebook's platforms - Facebook, WhatsApp, and Instagram - account for over 70 per cent of the time people spend on social media and are accessed at least once a month by 80 per cent of all internet users. Millions of posts every day on social media sites now include a GIF. "Any reduction in the choice or quality of these GIFs could significantly affect how people use these sites and whether or not they switch to a different platform, such as Facebook," said the CMA. "As most major social media

sites that compete with Facebook use Giphy GIFs, and there is only one other large provider of GIFs - Google's Tenor - these platforms have very little choice," it added. In May, Facebook wrote in a filing to the UK regulator that Giphy had "no meaningful audience of its own" and was already "reliant on Facebook for a significant proportion of its user traffic." "We disagree with the CMA's preliminary findings, which we do not believe to be supported by the evidence," a Facebook spokesperson told The Verge. The CMA found that, prior to the deal, Giphy was considering expanding its advertising services to other countries, including the UK. "This would have brought a new player into the advertising market and a potential

challenger to Facebook. It would also have encouraged greater innovation from others in the market, including social media sites and advertisers," the regulator noted. Stuart McIntosh, chair of the independent inquiry group at CMA, said that while their investigation has shown serious competition concerns, these are

provisional. "We will now consult on our findings before completing our review. Should we conclude that the merger is detrimental to the market and social media users, we will take the necessary actions to make sure people are protected," he said. The CMA will announce its final decision by October 6.

'NOT ON THE CARDS': UK DEFENCE SECRETARY ON WHETHER BRITISH FORCES WILL RETURN TO AFGHANISTAN British Secretary of Defence Ben Wallace said on Monday that British forces will not be returning to Afghanistan after the Taliban seized the Afghan capital city of Kabul. Responding to a question by Sky News if Britain and NATO forces would return to Afghanistan, Wallace said,

"That's not on the cards that we're going to go back." Wallace said Britain was doing everything it could to evacuate British nationals and Afghans with links to Britain. "Our target is...about 1,200 to 1,500 exit a day in the capacity of our aeroplanes, and we'll keep that flow," he said. British Prime Minister Boris Johnson said on Sunday 15 August that the US decision to pull out of Afghanistan has "accelerated things." Parliament will be recalled on Wednesday from their summer recess to debate the British government's response to the rapidly evolving situation in Afghanistan. The British Defence Secretary on Friday said the US decision to pull its military forces out of Afghanistan was a "mistake," which has handed the Taliban "momentum" in the country.

WEST YORKSHIRE’S YOUNG PEOPLE TO BENEFIT FROM 1,000 ‘GREEN JOBS’ BOOST West Yorkshire has the pipeline of talent needed to realise its ambitious target of becoming a net-zero carbon economy by 2038 with significant progress by the end of the decade.

BY SHAWNA HEALEY Young people across West Yorkshire are to benefit from the creation of 1,000 ‘green jobs’ through an initiative that will also follow through on the Mayor’s pledge to make the region a net-zero carbon economy by 2038.

Green Jobs are defined as employment in an activity that directly contributes to or indirectly supports, the achievement of the UK’s net zero emissions target and other environmental goals, such as nature restoration and mitigation against climate risks.

Tracy Brabin, Mayor of West Yorkshire, has announced a major step towards fulfilling her commitment of creating 1,000 well paid, skilled, green jobs for young people aged under 30 with the formation of a Green Jobs Taskforce for the county. As well as becoming a founding member of the Green Jobs Taskforce, Northern Powergrid has committed to supporting the Mayor’s pledge as it takes a leading role in getting West Yorkshire ready for a low carbon future. The Mayoral Green Jobs Gateway on the West Yorkshire Combined Authority website has also recently launched on their website, with employers are encouraged to sign up to support the Mayor by pledging jobs for young people.

Tracy Brabin has marked more than 100 days in office as the first Mayor of the West Yorkshire Combined Authority deliver on my pledge of creating 1,000 well paid, skilled, green jobs for young people, who have been so severely impacted by the pandemic. It reflects the fact that almost every organisation and occupation in West Yorkshire has an opportunity to contribute to tackling the climate emergency, whether working in low carbon sectors, ensuring a just transition for high carbon sectors, or making environmentally friendly changes to their working practices. Estimates show that West Yorkshire has the potential to create over 70,000 good, new, high skilled jobs in the green economy by the middle of the century, and 40,000 of them by 2030.

“Creating a diverse workforce with the skillsets needed to manage a smarter, more digitalised electricity network will be essential as we seek to create a greener energy system for our customers and support the drive to net-zero.

COMMUNITY MEMBERS GATHER AT SEMINAR TO DISCUSS RACIAL DISCRIMINATION IN THE FIELD OF SPORT. Bradford based community organisation ‘Sport Campaign Against Racism’ (SCAR), founded by Delroy Dacres (manager of Campion Football club for more than two decades) and Shazad Parvais (first South Asian Football scout), held a seminar on Sunday titled ‘Combatting Racial Discrimination in the Field of Sport’ at Manningham Mills, Bradford.

The panel of guests included Saima Hussain, the country’s first Asian female rugby league player, Humayun Islam, CEO of BEAP, Fatima Patel, founder of Inspirational Woman’s

The event was attended by local sports clubs, community organisations, members of the public which included an esteemed guest panel, chaired by Kick It Out CEO Tony Burnet.

sport. Saima Hussain who has had racial slurs shouted at her during a game of rugby said: “Governing bodies need to do more. As a coach it is incumbent on us to understand each other’s way of life, but when this doesn’t happen governing bodies need to step up. It shouldn’t be brushed under the carpet.” Guest Mumtaz Khan, who has an ongoing dispute with the governing body for Ju-Jitsu also shared her frustrations. The award-winning, sports woman, told the audience how she has been battling with Sport England to address racism and discrimination faced by her and her club members from their governing body for more than

Humayun Islam BEM, CEO of BEAP partnership, a community organisation and one of the founders of Bangla Bantams added that “we shouldn’t shy away and keep challenging when things are not right, but we should do it in a positive way. If someone is shouting racist slurs, we need to shout louder with our

positivity and that’s what Bangla Bantams do.” The audience in the room resonated with the panel and the general feeling was that racism in sport is very much ‘alive and kicking’ which was more recently reinforced with the Euro 2020 final where Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho and Bukayo Saka were all abused online for missing penalties. If that’s not enough then the stats on representation from black, Asian and minority communities in professional sports shows an even bleaker story. Let’s look at the Olympics, despite having the first Muslim, Mohamed Sbihi, being the flag bearer for Team GB, the team is still not as diverse and inclusive as they would like us to believe. It is a predominantly white squad; 86% of the athletes are white, 12% are black and the remaining

RENTS WILL COME DOWN FOR COUNCILOWNED COMMERCIAL PROPERTIES

The Huddersfield Blueprint. The view of what is now the Piazza, showing most of the shopping centre demolished and new landscaping down to Queen Street. A modern extension has been added to Huddersfield Library and Art Gallery BY TONY EARNSHAW Rents for council-owned commercial properties in Huddersfield will be “considerably less” in the future as efforts are made to revive the town centre. Partly a reaction to the impact of the ongoing Covid pandemic, it comes as national retail brands desert the town leaving large premises empty. Council staff are now looking anew at rents and incentives to attract tenants – and to tiein with plans for the so-called Huddersfield Blueprint. The council’s disposal acquisitions surveyor, Matthew Garbutt, said a rent review had taken place as a result of the coronavirus and how that affected retail. Speaking to a meeting of the Corporate Scrutiny Panel he said: “We’ve had to re-look at rents. “The rents that we were previously getting will be potentially considerably less

[in future]. The incentives that we need to give occupiers may increase. “Prior to Covid occupiers would get a couple of months rent-free if they were going to fit out, redecorate or make some improvements to the building. “Depending on the occupier [and] how strong they are we may need to give significantly more of an incentive to get these units occupied.” Mr Garbutt also exploded the myth that the council owns all the commercial properties within the parameters of the ring road. He said that 10% was a more accurate figure, with the majority of tenants within the commercial estate being local independent businesses or regional-based retailers. However, he accepted that some national names – such as Top Shop, Ernest Jones and Thomas Cook – had given up premises in the town. He said estate agent Edison’s

had been appointed to help with the re-letting of empty properties over the next month. “We’ve seen a shift in demand. There’s still quite a bit of demand from local independent businesses. It’s the national retailers that have really struggled and those type of retailers that have disappeared. “We lost Thomas Cook preCovid and there have been a number of other businesses. The tenants within the commercial estate are more regional and local. “People do like the council as their landlord. We do charge market rents but they do like the knowledge that the council is their landlord and we’re quite accessible as opposed to a pension fund that has an office in London and a managing agent in Manchester.” He said the current climate was “challenging”. Among the council’s commercial spaces – often

retail units beneath council offices – are High Street Buildings, Kirkgate Buildings, Somerset Buildings, the Byram Arcade, Estate Buildings opposite the railway station, and a block at 2-14 New Street.

The privately-owned commercial properties in Huddersfield include Kingsgate, the Packhorse Centre, the Imperial Arcade and “both sides of the far end of New Street”.

Assets bought as part of the assembly of the £250m Huddersfield Blueprint are not commercial investments as the revenue they generate does not form part of the council’s commercial estate.

All are described as “prime areas”.

That includes the piazza, bought for £3.25m, which is to be demolished to create a large town centre green space.

“We do get a lot of inquiries through our team from people who think the council own everything.

Meanwhile the revival of the area around St George’s Square – and the creation of pedestrianised alfresco dining areas around Wood Street – have been positively received.

“One of the confusing factors for some people is that the council still owns the freehold of the majority of the town centre but a high proportion of that is subject to 999-year leases.

Mr Garbutt said those “strategic acquisitions” give the council “some element of control” in terms of how it shapes some of the town centre going forward, and that the piazza was “a good example” of that process.

Mr Garbutt added: “It is quite limited what we own and what we can control through the commercial estate management.

“So, it doesn’t really give the council any real level of control over what happens to those assets or what they’re used for.” Article by Local Democracy Reporting Service

MAYOR ASKS WEST YORKSHIRE WOMEN TO TAKE PART IN SAFETY ROUNDTABLE Increasing safety for women and girls across West Yorkshire is one of Mayor Tracy Brabin's pledges for improving the area priorities of local people and local partners and aims to make sure that all of our communities across West Yorkshire are safe and feel safe. These priorities have been identified through consultation with the general public, partners and West Yorkshire Police.

BY SHAWNA HEALEY Communities and partnership organisations across West Yorkshire are being encouraged to share their experience and knowledge to help improve safety for women and girls. The Mayor of West Yorkshire, Tracy Brabin, has recently launched a call for evidence on the theme, which will help to shape her forthcoming Police and Crime Plan.

A ‘Tackling Domestic Abuse’ conference involving the third sector is due to take place on 16 November which will be an in-person and virtual event, with further details to be announced soon.

Under the Police Reform and Social Responsibility Act 2011 the Mayor must produce a Police and Crime Plan that sets out West Yorkshire’s strategic policing and crime priorities and how she plans to meet them. The plan draws on a wide range of information, from consultation with local people, the police, community safety,

criminal justice and third sector partners to ensure it reflects the policing and crime issues which are affecting

West Yorkshire. Formal consultation on the plan set for early September, alongside a round-table event, focused on safety for women and girls. The roundtable event will take place virtually between 2:30 pm -4:30 pm on Tuesday 7 September. Mayor of West Yorkshire, Tracy Brabin says that she wants to capture a diverse range of perspectives. She said: “The safety of women and girls is of great concern to me and a key pledge at the very heart of my Mayoral manifesto. That is why I have arranged for a roundtable event on 7 September, to hear more about people’s experiences and understand how we can work better together. We know this is a complex subject and there is much to be done at a national level, but we also need a local conversation now to gather our combined knowledge.

Mayor Tracy Brabin

“I am really keen to hear from

local voices on key issues such as stalking, domestic abuse, sexual offences, honourbased abuse, misogyny, modern slavery and safety in public spaces.

To register your interest in attending the roundtable, email Consultation.PC@ westyorks-ca.gov.uk by 1 September 2021 or to submit evidence, email Consultation. PC@westyorks-ca.gov.uk or call 0113 348 1740 by Friday 17 September.

“I want to know how we can bring about the behavioural change, which will influence attitudes towards women and girls in wider society.” West Yorkshire’s Deputy Mayor for Policing and Crime, Alison Lowe added: “Our conversation will be crucial in informing the Police and Crime Plan 2021-2024, which is a key document and will drive policing and partnership efforts to support women and girls over the next 3 years. “The vision for our work is to come together with partners including the police, local authorities, health, education, third sector, our communities and those supporting and advocating for women and girls across all sectors.” The Police and Crime Plan reflects the views and

WORKING FROM HOME

The key disadvantage in my opinion has been working in a team based, environment. I believe working from home in reality has impacted many individuals, as it has meant little social interaction, and not being able to socialise properly.

A long time ago, circa 15 years now, I decided to set up a business, and work from home. I then went back to office work, as put simply it was getting boring, being in my office, and I was missing the social interaction. Anyhow fast forward 15 years, Covid forced many of us to work from home. In reality, this was forced on many of us, as employers did not want us coming into the offices, and neither did the government. So, now that Covid is going the right way, and not a huge impact on our lives as it was, the government want us back in the city centres, and so do employers. I think one of the key factors that many employees, and employers have realised is that with many roles and jobs you

can effectively work from home. Now after nearly two years of working at home, many people have realised how expensive going to work is for your back pocket. I didn’t realise until recently how expensive a season train ticket is, then we have the lunches, the car parking etc. In reality, many individuals have saved a fair

amount due to not attending an office for the sake of sitting there and doing the same job that can be done from home. The second issue dilemma is how much time is saved not attending the office. Many of us save circa two hours a day not travelling to the office, and instead working from home. It has given us more time to spend on ourselves, and get things done, which we would normally put off. The key disadvantage in my opinion has been working in a team based, environment. I believe working from home in reality has impacted many individuals, as it has meant little social interaction, and not being able to socialise properly. So, now when many are expected to go back what are your options? Well, I would encourage you to review your personal situation, and discuss

any concerns you might have with your employer. It is always easier to discuss and raise your concerns with your employer. In reality, all employees have had the legal right to work flexibly, if one has been employed for 26 weeks by the same employer, However, an employer is within their rights to turn down a request if this is not reasonable, and the employer has a good business reason to turn down the application. In the meantime, working from home has also meant we are able to access the microservice HMRC launched where we can claim £6 per week, even If we worked for one day from home This means you are able to claim 2-years worth of working from home by simply following a link online if you do not complete tax returns. If you do, then this can be done on a self-assessment form.

I CAN NEVER GET ENOUGH OF 'KBC': AMITABH BACHCHAN

Ahead of the release of the latest season of 'Kaun Banega Crorepati', megastar Amitabh Bachchan expressed his happiness to host the show in the presence of a live audience. For the unversed, last year, 'Kaun Banega Crorepati' had taken place without the involvement of a live audience on the sets owing to the coronavirus pandemic. Excited about the upcoming season, Big B said, "It's the 21st year of my association with Kaun Banega Crorepati and I can never get enough of this show. It was probably for the first time, last season, that the studio audience wasn't a part of the show and we saw a major change in the lifelines as well." He added, "I for one, truly missed them and their energy... it's infectious! I am happy that the studio audience is back this season with a newfound vigour and so is the lifeline - Audience Poll. It's an enriching experience for me, each year, to be surrounded

by contestants from all walks of life and I look forward to engaging and fulfilling gameplay. These contestants inspire me in every way." The 'Agneepath' star started hosting the quiz show in the year 2000, and since then he has been a constant part of the show except for one season. Speaking about the new season, a lot of changes have been implemented. As per a statement, Fastest Finger First, with which the show commences, has been modified to Fastest Finger First - Triple Test. While it may

seem challenging, it does hold a gamut of opportunities for the contestants. Instead of one question, the answer to which had to be chronologically aligned, contestants will now have to answer three GK questions. A leaderboard will showcase the time taken by each contestant to answer the respective questions and the one to answer all three questions correctly in the shortest amount of time will head straight to the Hot Seat! When it comes to lifelines, yes, the Audience

Poll is making a comeback this season! With the studio audience being reinstated, the entire vibe of the show has been raised a few notches higher. The other three lifelines include 5050 (wherein 2 incorrect answers will get deleted from the four options); Ask The Expert (wherein the contestant can seek help from one distinguished professional) and Flip The Question (wherein the contestant will get an opportunity to change the question altogether and choose a topic for the replacement question). Ashish Golwalkar, Head Content, Sony Entertainment Television and Digital Business, also spoke about what one can expect from the latest season of the game show. "For a show like KBC that has followed a certain creative pattern, it was time for us to break the mold and approach it differently. While digital auditions replaced the regular audition process, it didn't deter the volume of

entries. In fact, the ease of digital audition encouraged a lot more aspirants, based in the remotest areas possible to participate. We are happy with the spiritedness of each contestant, and we are hopeful that they fulfil their KBC journey," Golwalkar said. Furthermore, while we did introduce AR (Augmented reality) in the previous seasons, this year, the use of AR is far more superior and immersive. From refurbishing the entire set with the play of lights to the graphical elements and LED panels, India is the only country to host the format with inclusion of such refined technological detailing. With distinct modifications to the game this season, we look forward to rewarding gameplay and promise an enhanced viewing experience to the audience," Golwalkar added. The 13th Season of 'Kaun Banega Crorepati' is scheduled to start on Sony Entertainment Television from August 23.

REMEMBERING SRIDEVI Sridevi was one of the most acclaimed actresses in the film industry. Known as the first female superstar, she had pan-India appeal. Even after her death, Sridevi continues to inspire several stars with her acting and dance skills. On the occasion of Sridevi’s 58th birth anniversary we take a look back at the icon’s illustrious career Sridevi was born in Sivakasi, Tamil Nadu on August 13, 1963. When she began her career in Hindi cinema, she had already established herself a name in South Indian cinema. She debuted with her acting career at the age of four in Tamil films and went on to do many more films in Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam. Sridevi won the Kerala State Film Award for Best

Child Artist for her performance in Poompatta in the Malayalam language. The most notable films of her childhood career are, 'Kandan Karunai' (1967), 'Nam Naadu' (1969), 'Prarthanai' (1970), 'Babu' (1971), 'Badi Panthulu' (1972), 'Bala Bharatam' (1972), 'Vasantha Maaligai' (1972) and 'Bhakta Kumbara' (1974). Sridevi made her Bollywood debut as a leading lady in 'Solva Sawan' in 1979, which sank without a trace, but thankfully four years later, along came 'Himmatwala' starring opposite Jeetendra where she hit stardom. The film released in 1983 and became one of the biggest blockbusters of that year. The year was followed by another blockbuster 'Tohfa'. Both films established Sridevi as one of the

leading actresses of Bollywood. Sridevi also featured in the film 'Sadma' in 1983 bringing critical acclaim to the actress. It still remains to be one of the finest films of her career. Sridevi's performance as an autistic child-woman character was widely praised and brought her nominations in the Filmfare for best actress award category and as well as in state awards and National Awards. Though the film didn't perform as per expectations, it is still regarded as an all-time classic. Who can forget the mesmerising Yash Chopra classic ‘Chandni’ (1989), for which Sridevi is also referred to as Chandni. The film went on to be a huge success further cementing Sridevi’s versatility as an actor. ‘Lamhe’, again from the Yash Raj Films stable, reaffirmed her acting calibre, while the film

didn’t ring in the money at the box office, it is still regarding as a film ahead of it’s time by critics. Sridevi was choosy about her projects and had refused even Hollywood great Steven Spielberg’s offer of a role in ‘Jurassic Park’ as she did not find the role meaty. Filmmaker Boney Kapoor had been smitten with her when he first saw her in a south Indian film. Her mother’s botched-up surgery at Sloan Kettering Cancer Centre in New York made her take the doctor to court. Kapoor stood behind her like a rock in those trying times and they tied the knot in 1996. They have two daughters together Jahnvi and Kushi Kapoor. After the film 'Judaai' was released in 1997 along with Anil Kapoor and Urmila Matondkar, Sridevi took a break for 15 years from acting career, after which she did make her brief return through television with 'Malini Iyer' and as a judge in the show 'Kaboom' in 2005.

Not many know that Sridevi named her two daughters Janhvi and Khushi after the names of the heroines in her husband Boney Kapoor’s films, ‘Judaai’ and ‘Hamara Dil Aapke Paas Hai’. It wasn’t until 2011 that Sridevi announced her comeback with 'English Vinglish'. The film was hailed by a lot of international media outlets giving her tags like 'Meryl Streep of India'. Some also praised Sridevi's performance as 'disarmingly charming in a manner that recalls Audrey Hepburn.' Later she did more movies in Tamil and Hindi both languages.

IN PARTNERSHIP WITH THE UK GOVERNMENT

TRAVELING ABROAD HAS CHANGED: THE LATEST TRAVEL UPDATES

The latest guidance with travelling abroad Since the 17 May the UK Government has reopened international travel. The Government’s priority continues to be protecting the public from COVID-19. The Traffic Light system (red, amber, and green) has been introduced to inform those intending to travel to and from the UK to help stop the spread of COVID-19. Everyone needs to follow the rules so that the UK can continue its journey out of the pandemic. The travel health measures are also needed to help prevent the spread of the new variants of COVID-19 that have been identified. It is important to take a day 2 PCR test to identify any variants of concern. The rules may change while you are away meaning extra checks when you come back. If you test positive while abroad, you will have to isolate in the country you are visiting before coming back to the UK.

With the new travel changes in mind, passengers are likely to face longer wait times throughout their journey due to additional health checks to help keep the UK safe. While the Government is making every effort to speed up queues safely it is also good practice to have correct documentation ready to meet UK health and border requirements, to prevent delays, be refused entry, or face a fine. Check gov.uk/guidance/traveladvice-novel-coronavirus before, during and after you travel to ensure you comply with latest COVID-19 and non-COVID-19 regulations for entering the UK and the country you are visiting. We must make sure that all members of the public to and from the countries we visit can travel safely and securely. Visit gov.uk/travel-abroad

Mr and Mrs Hasan Patel are regular travellers to India, however this year despite being double jabbed the couple have decided to explore the stunning region of Yorkshire and rediscover the beautiful landscapes and the many heritage sites. Mr and Mrs Patel who are both in their sixties, often spend winter months in India and summer months at their home in Bradford. They also take a regular two-week break exploring other countries, with the last one being Tunisia in 2019. However, like last year, this year too, they won’t be travelling to India or any other foreign destination. Instead, they have decided to rediscover their own home region, by booking out a cottage and exploring the picturesque scenery and heritage of Yorkshire. Mrs Patel has been briefing herself with the latest information on travelling and what the new covid guidance is for travelling. She believes while there are safety measure in place, PCR testing and having had both vaccines, she prefers to remain cautious about foreign travel and at the same time, use this as an opportunity to explore what’s on her doorstep. “Since taking on retirement my husband and I have loved travelling back to our ancestral home in India and also using our free time as an opportunity to explore other countries. Covid has made this difficult, however, that’s not a bad thing, as this gives me a good reason now to explore what’s around me.

Mr & Mrs Patel, travel frequently to India, but have decided to stay safe and explore local destinations for their annual break I have always wanted to see the Yorkshire Dales, there are some amazing national parks in our region along with some stunning waterfalls, so said to my husband, let’s book a cottage and walk around the national parks and experience the picturesque places on our doorstep.” The Bradford based former shopkeepers, have already used the start of summer to have day trips, shopping and site seeing. They’ve been visiting places like Leicester and London, basking in the recent hot weather and soaking in the plethora of shops and cafes. “We normally do a lot of shopping when we go to India, but Leicester has a really vibrant shopping culture, and they have lots of great places to eat out in. My husband and I are really enjoying the time to re-discover England.”

Due to Covid restrictions, regular trips to India have been put on hold by the Patel’s until foreign travel becomes safer

Here are some useful tips for travelling abroad Check gov.uk/travel-abroad before, during and after your travel to ensure you comply with latest COVID-19 regulations for the UK and the country you are visiting. Ensure you book authorised COVID-19 tests and complete relevant documentation (such

as Passenger Locator Forms) for your destination and return to the UK. Check gov.uk/visiteurope to ensure you comply with any new rules in place as a result of the UK having left the EU Check your passport is valid using gov.uk/check-passport

and allow up to 10 weeks for the renewal process If you need a negative COVID-19 test to enter a country, you should use a private test provider. NHS Test and Trace are a government funded service and do not provide tests for travel. Go to gov.uk/find-travel-

test-provider to find a private provider. Check the new requirements when travelling to Europe as we have left the EU. COVID-19 rates remain high in many countries, find out how you can help protect yourself. Travellers may require a COVID-19

status certificate abroad with them to prove that they have conformed with the destination country’s requirements. Passengers returning to the UK should check gov.uk/travelabroad Non-UK residents should visit gov.uk/uk-border-control

SUGAR: WHY SOME PEOPLE EXPERIENCE SIDE-EFFECTS WHEN THEY QUIT BY Professor JAMES BROWN It might surprise you to learn that sugar consumption has actually been steadily decreasing since 2008. This could be happening for any number of reasons, including a shift in tastes and lifestyles, with the popularity of lowcarbohydrate diets, like keto, increasing in the past decade. A greater understanding of the dangers of eating excess sugar on our health may also be driving this drop. Reducing sugar intake has clear health benefits, including reduced calorie intake, which can help with weight loss, and improved dental health. But people sometimes report side-effects when they try eating less sugar – including headaches, fatigue or mood changes, which are usually temporary. The reason for these side-effects is poorly understood. But it’s likely these symptoms relate to how the brain reacts when exposed to sugary foods – and the biology of “reward”. Carbohydrates come in several forms – including as sugars, which can naturally occur in many foods, such as fructose in fruits and lactose in milk. Table sugar – known as sucrose – is found in sugar cane and sugar beet, maple syrup and even honey. As mass production of food has become the norm, sucrose and other sugars are now added to foods to make them more palatable. Beyond the improved taste and “mouthfeel” of foods with high sugar content, sugar has profound biological effects in the brain. These effects are so significant it’s even led to a debate as to whether you can be “addicted” to sugar – though this is still being studied. Sucrose activates sweet taste receptors in the mouth which ultimately leads to the release of a chemical called dopamine in the brain. Dopamine is a neurotransmitter, meaning it’s a chemical that passes messages between nerves in the brain. When we’re exposed

Image: Shutterstock

to a rewarding stimulus, the brain responds by releasing dopamine – which is why it’s often called the “reward” chemical. The rewarding effects of dopamine are largely seen in the part of the brain involved in pleasure and reward. Reward governs our behaviour – meaning we’re driven to repeat the behaviours which caused dopamine to be released in the first place. Dopamine can drive us to seek food (such as junk food). Experiments in both animals and people have shown how profoundly sugar activates these reward pathways. Intense sweetness surpasses even cocaine in terms of the internal reward it triggers. Interestingly, sugar is able to activate these reward pathways in the brain whether it’s tasted in the mouth or injected into the bloodstream, as shown in studies on mice. This means its effects are independent of the sweet taste. In rats, there’s strong evidence to suggest that sucrose

consumption can actually change the structures in the brain that dopamine activates as well as altering emotional processing and modifying behaviour in both animals and humans. Quitting sugar It’s obvious that sugar can have a powerful effect on us. So that’s why it’s not surprising to see negative effects when we eat less sugar or remove it from our diet completely. It’s during this early “sugar withdrawal” stage that both mental and physical symptoms have been reported – including depression, anxiety, brain fog and cravings, alongside headaches, fatigue and dizziness. This means giving up sugar can feel unpleasant, both mentally and physically, which may make it difficult for some to stick with the diet change The basis for these symptoms has not been extensively studied, but it’s likely they’re also linked to the reward pathways in the brain.

Although the idea of “sugar addiction” is controversial, evidence in rats has shown that like other addictive substances, sugar is able to induce bingeing, craving and withdrawal anxiety. Other research in animals has demonstrated that the effects of sugar addiction, withdrawal and relapse are similar to those of drugs. But most of the research that exists in this area is on animals, so it’s currently difficult to say whether it’s the same for humans. The reward pathways in the human brain have remained unchanged by evolution – and it’s likely many other organisms have similar reward pathways in their brains. This means that the biological impacts of sugar withdrawal seen in animals are likely to occur to some degree in humans too because our brains have similar reward pathways. A change in the brain’s chemical balance is almost certainly behind the symptoms reported in humans who remove or

reduce dietary sugar. As well as being involved in reward, dopamine also regulates hormonal control, nausea and vomiting and anxiety. As sugar is removed from the diet, the rapid reduction in dopamine’s effects in the brain would likely interfere in the normal function of many different brain pathways, explaining why people report these symptoms. Although research on sugar withdrawal in humans is limited, one study has provided evidence of withdrawal symptoms and increased sugar cravings after sugar was removed from the diets of overweight and obese adolescents. As with any dietary change, sticking to it is key. So if you want to reduce sugar from your diet long term, being able to get through the first few difficult weeks is crucial. It’s important to acknowledge, however, that sugar isn’t “bad” per se – but that it should be eaten in moderation alongside a healthy diet and exercise. MY STORY AT REAL MADRID HAS BEEN WRITTEN: RONALDO ON TRANSFER RUMOURS Juventus star Cristiano Ronaldo has rubbished the disrespectful media reports which suggested the Portugal striker could return to Real Madrid. The star footballer is entering the last year of his Juventus deal and there were talks of him moving to his old club. “Anyone who knows me is aware of how focused I am on my work. Less talk and more action, this has been my guiding motto since the start of my career. However, in view of everything that’s been said and written

rumours, as well as to their players and staff. “My story at Real Madrid has been written. It’s been recorded. In words and numbers, in trophies and titles, in records and in headlines. It’s in the Museum at the Bernabeu Stadium and it’s also in the minds of every fan of the club. “And beyond what I achieved, I remember that in those nine years I had a relationship of deep affection and respect for ‘merengue aficion’, an affection and respect that I retain to this day, and that

“As well as this most recent episode in Spain, there have been frequent news and stories associating me with a number of clubs in many different leagues, with nobody ever being concerned about trying to find out the actual truth,” said Ronaldo. “I’m breaking my silence now to say that I can’t allow people to keep playing around with my name. I remain focused on my career and in my work, committed and prepared for all the challenges that I have to face. Everything else?

Everything else is just talk,” he added. Earlier this month, in one of the biggest transfers in football, Lionel Messi signed for PSG on a two-year contract with an option of a third-year after leaving Barcelona.

Andy Murray

GB’s very own two-time champion Andy Murray made good on a main draw wildcard to win his opening game against Frenchman Richard Gasquet at the Western and Southern Open this week. In his first match since a third-round defeat to Denis Shapovalov at Wimbledon, the former world No. 1 ground out a 6-4, 6-4 victory over the world No. 53. Murray finished with 38 winners, including 15 aces, to Gasquet’s 20 winners. He won 81 per cent of first-serve points to his opponent’s 61 per cent and committed 28 unforced errors. “I thought I did well. I moved pretty well for my first singles match in a while on hard courts,” Murray said. “Certainly, a little bit more confidence in my movement than when I played him a

couple of years ago. It was my first match (in 2019) I’d played since (I had) the metal hip in so I was a bit apprehensive. “He uses all the angles on the court really well and makes you move a lot, so you need to move well against him, and I did that tonight. I served good. I got a lot of free points on my serve. I thought I was taking control of the rallies when I had the opportunities, so it was a good match,” said Murray. Gasquet had beaten Spaniards Fernando Verdasco and Jaume Munar in qualifying to take his place in the main draw and would have done well to remember his most recent encounter with Murray -- a straight-sets victory in his favour at this stage in Cincinnati two years ago. It was Murray who held

the advantage in the pair’s ATP head-to-head and he improved that to 9-4 when he broke Gasquet for the last time to secure victory after one hour and 50 minutes. He awaits the winner of ninth seed Hubert Hurkacz of Poland and Alejandro Davidovich Fokina of Spain. “The courts and the balls are pretty fast. Obviously playing in the evening slows it down a little bit but that was to my advantage,” Murray said. “He played with a lot of spin and during the day the ball gets up very high, but he wasn’t able to get as high on me today, so I was able to step in and control a lot of the points. “It’s amazing. They were saying it’s the 16th year I’ve been here. I don’t think I’ve played any tournament more than that,” he said.

DID NOT LOOK DELIBERATE, JUST ACCIDENTAL: RATHOUR ON ALLEGED BALL-TAMPERING India batting coach Vikram Rathour has said that he does not think England was trying to tamper with the ball, and the whole sequence of events was just accidental, and it was not deliberate. Two English players were seen stepping on the ball with their spikes before the 34th over of India’s second innings in the ongoing second Test at the Lord’s Cricket Ground last Sunday. “Not really, we were sitting outside so we hardly saw those replays. I saw it later, it

accidental, we did not think anything about it actually,” said Rathour during a virtual press conference. Shaun Pollock who was commenting at that time also showed his disapproval regarding the incident. Notably, the ball wasn’t changed by the umpires after this incident. Pollock even mentioned the match referee might want to have a look at it. England pacer Stuart Broad though was quick to call it an accident. Replying to a fan on Twitter, he wrote “As

full footage- it wasn’t deliberate was it. End of Story.” Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli both disappointed with the bat in the second innings after being dismissed for 21 and 20 respectively. While Rohit was sent back to the pavilion while playing his favoured pull shot, Kohli chased a wide delivery bowled outside off. Ajinkya Rahane and Cheteshwar Pujara scored 61 and 45 respectively as India ended day 4 at 181/6 and the visitors have

AHEAD OF CLASH WITH INDIA, PAKISTAN’S AZAM SAYS T20 WORLD CUP IS LIKE A HOME EVENT With the muchanticipated clash between India and Pakistan in the ICC T20 World Cup scheduled to take place in Dubai on October 24, Pakistan skipper Babar Azam said his team will utilise the time between now and the mega-event to play home series against New Zealand and England and “fine-tuning our final outlook.” Speaking on the ICC website, Azam said, “The T20 World Cup schedule announcement brings us one step forward in our preparations for this much-awaited global tournament. We will utilise the build-up period by playing in home series against New Zealand and England and will not only aim to fine-tune our final outlook but also win as many matches as possible so that we can carry that winning form and momentum to the UAE.” In a warning that Pakistan will be a force to reckon with, Azam said, “For Pakistan, the T20 World Cup is like a home event as the UAE has been our venue for more than a decade. We have not only nurtured our talent and developed our side in the UAE but have also beaten the top sides in these conditions to peak to No. 1 in the ICC T20I team

England captain Eoin Morgan said that the standard of T20 cricket around the world is improving exponentially and every nation has a chance of becoming world champions. “It should be one of the closest and most competitive world tournaments to date and we can’t wait to get started,” said Morgan. The complete schedule confirms the highly anticipated match between former champions India and Pakistan will take place on October 24 in Dubai while Ashes rivals England and Australia will play at the same venue six days later. The West Indies, the only side to win the tournament twice, will also feature on the opening day of the Super 12s as they kick off their defence of the title in Dubai against England, top ranked in the T20I team rankings. (PNG) and Scotland, feature in Round 1 of the 16-team tournament, being hosted in the UAE and Oman through to November 14. The top two teams from each group of Round 1 will make it to the Super 12s. T20 cricket is dynamic, and the international scene is highly competitive, with players constantly pushing the boundaries of innovation and we are expecting a spectacular event in the UAE and Oman,” said Pollard.
