Now on to 2016, we promise not to disappoint you for the coming year and have some really amazing things in store. This issue, we have the dashing Akshay Kumar gracing our cover. Personally I think this is one individual who has aged gracefully and has matured rather well as an actor. His fitness mantra really seems to be working in his favour. I am sure we all want to look that fit at that age. Akshay if you're reading this, please invite me for a workout sometime, I can get up at 5am (if it's for you). On a serious note do go watch his Airlift, which is out in cinemas on 22 January, based on a real life story. Coming to fashion, well our B-town stars are not far there either, as it's awards seasons our A and B listers will be gracing the red carpet with their hit or miss style statements...Our fashion police have been keeping an eye, so don't worry we've got that covered this edition along with so much more...So from mu-a ciao for now. Yours lovingly

Star Screen Awards 2016 It’s awards season and our B-Town hunks and our darling heroines surely do liven up the red carpet in their dazzling looks. But the fashion police radar may not always be favourable to our stars. Let’s see who was a hit and who was a miss on the red carpet at this year’s Star Screen Awards 2016

Well if we say anything bad about Ranveer, the ladies in the Asian Style office will probably chase us round the room with a stick…On a serious note away from his eccentric and bright wardrobe Ranveer does look rather dashing in this Dior Homme piece, which shows the star looks oh so hot in this chic attire.

Actress Sonakshi Sinha dazzled in a beautiful burgundy gown by designer duo Gauri and Nainika Harshaali Malhotra, the cute little girl who played Munni in Bhajrangi Bhaijaan just looks too cute here. Irrfan Khan who won

the jury’s choice award on the night for Best Actor in Talvar looked every so comfortable in this blue and white combination.

Top 5

Bollywood films to watch out for in 2016

2015 ended magnanimously at the box office for the Bollywood industry, with both Bajirao Mastani and Dilwale bringing in the moolah for their producers and it seems that the largest film industry in the world is gearing up for a fabulous 2016 too. We think 2016 promises to be one heck of a year when it comes to the Bollywood line-up of releases. Given the choices, narrowing down to our list of most-awaited was no easy task, but in true filmy style, we give you our top-five Bollywood films you should not miss.

by Ayesha Babar

Fan

This Shah Rukh Khan starrer is one movie that fans of not just Shah Rukh Khan but any superstar will be able to relate to. The director, Maneesh Sharma, is a self-proclaimed fan of SRK and in many ways it will be a feature ‘made by the fans, for the fans’! The promotional strategy has so far capitalised on this theme, from running a competition for fans to be featured in the official movie logo to plans for different songs to be released at fan-centric events. Fan will also be a welcome change for Shah Rukh who has focussed on popcorn entertainers in the past few years which have brought in the money but have left some die-hard fans and critics of the actor underwhelmed. An intense Shah Rukh Khan is the best, we say!

2

The wait ends on April 15, 2016 with the film’s worldwide release.

Sultan

Salman Khan has had a record-breaking year in 2015 with the very humane ‘Bajrangi Bhaijaan’ and ‘Prem Ratan Dhan Payo’ where he went back to basics as ‘Prem’ raking in record box office figures. Salman’s next, Sultan, which features him as a wrestler will be the first film to be released after the 50-year old Khan’s acquittal in his 2002 hit and run case. The leading lady for the film has just been zeroed in on as Anushka Sharma after months and months of speculation. With the physical preparations for Sultan well underway for Salman, we are sure this one will be high on content as well as brawn! Sultan clashes with the Shah Rukh Khan starrer ‘Raees’ on Eid 2016 and it remains to be seen which one comes out on top. We are wishing the best for both!

Imagine Ranbir Kapoor, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and Anushka Sharma in the same frame. Add Karan Johar behind the camera and you get a seriously good-looking film! We are most excited about this film because of the unusual and fresh pairing of Aishwarya and Ranbir. The film, for which the shooting is almost 70 per cent complete is set mainly in London and also features Pakistani heartthrobs, Fawad Afzal Khan and Imran Abbas in supporting roles. We are hoping this film will also showcase Karan Johar’s darker, edgier style as the story deals with love, tragedy and broken hearts.

Ae Dil Hai Mushkil hits theatres on 28 October, 2016.

Fitoor Mohenjo Daro

Hrithik Roshan, who was last seen in 2014’s ‘Bang Bang’, is all set to return to the big screen this year with Mohenjo Daro. The film has Hrithik, who has recently had a rough patch in his personal life, collaborating with the master director, Ashoutosh Gowariker, to bring to life a love story set in 2600 B.C. Their first outing together was the delightful period drama ‘Jodha Akbar’. Mohenjo Daro will also feature music by A.R. Rahman making this a soundtrack to watch out for. Mohenjo Daro will release on 12 August, 2016 and we cannot wait!

The trailer is already out for Fitoor, Abhishek Kapoor’s latest love saga set in the picturesque locales of Kashmir. The film is an adaptation of the classic British novel, ‘Great Expectations’ and is all set to bring us some great performances from Aditya Roy Kapur, Tabu and Katrina Kaif. While the music is already creating a buzz, we are really eager to see how the story has been translated onto reel. In recent years, Bollywood has done a rather good job of adapting classic English literature to our desi tastes – whether it was a the brilliant Shahid Kapoor starrer, Haider, or the poetry in every frame, ‘Lootera’. Will Fitoor join that league? We’ll have to wait until 12 February to find out. Saying that we are excited would be an understatement!

Zayn Malik “never felt like he belonged” in One Direction

Even after ‘Fan’, Shah Rukh Khan The 23-year-old singer quit the group - who were put together on ‘The X Factor’ in 2010 - last March but admits he didn’t have to make a big decision to leave because he always had underlying doubts about what he was doing. He said: “When I decided to leave, it wasn’t a big build up, it had always been underlying. I never felt like I belonged in the group, I was just doing it because at the time, I felt like it was the right place for me to be.” And Zayn claims he always “distanced” himself from the group’s music because he never felt he was being true to himself. He told Italy’s Vogue magazine: “To be honest, I mentally and physically distanced myself from

what I was doing creatively because I didn’t want any part of it really. It didn’t feel like I was really being me.” These days, the hunky star is busy working on his debut solo album and relishing every second in the studio. He said: “Now that I can really be myself and make music that feels honest to me, it doesn’t feel like work. It really is relaxing to me.” Asked if there’ll be any collaborations on the record, he added: “I just want this album to be about me and me standing on my own two feet. I’ve sung with four other voices for over four years now so I want to hear myself, alone for once”.

still doesn’t understand people’s adulation Superstar Shah Rukh Khan says shooting for his forthcoming film “Fan” has been a difficult journey as an actor, but says he still doesn’t have any clarity on how people love him so much. “Before I could become a fan, I became a star. I still don’t understand how people love me so much... care for me and their mothers and children and families (also shower affections). It is quite a responsibility for me sometimes...,” Shah Rukh noted. In Maneesh Sharma’s “Fan”, slated for an April 15 release, SRK essays a fan obsessed with a reigning superstar who looks just like him, and travels to Mumbai to meet the actor. Quizzed on how he juggled playing the role of an obsessed fan, SRK said it felt “quite schizophrenic” to do that. “One has to maintain a dignity of what a fan is. That part I have kept in mind. It’s been a difficult journey as an actor... quite schizophrenic ... quite dichotomous.” The “Dilwale” star revealed his take on stardom and clarified that he is not a fan of himself. “Not at all... I am amazed that I should have become a star. My general belief is people who become actors are people who do not love themselves. They just want to be a different person every morning. People who love themselves become extremely fantastic stars. So I am not a big fan of myself,” he added.

I’m very normal: Jennifer Lopez Singer-actress Jennifer Lopez says she is “very normal” and will always be “down-to-earth” despite her superstar status. “There was a lot of misconceptions about me being a real diva or a problem or being very demanding and things like that. As unusual as my life is, I am very normal, I think, and down-to-earth,” Lopez told TV Guide magazine “I am happy to be one of the people who are breaking the mould. We can’t keep acting like we are in the 1950s. Women are strong. Women are bold. And now it is reflected in our art,” she added.

Shraddha to shoot ‘Half Girlfriend’ after ‘Baaghi’ , ‘Rock On 2’ Bollywood actress Shraddha Kapoor will shoot for “Half Girlfriend” and the remake of “O Kandhal Kanmani” after she finishes the shooting of “Baaghi” and “Rock On 2”. “I’m very excited to be working on ‘Half Girlfriend’ and the ‘Ok Kanmani’ remake’, I’ll start shooting for them after ‘Baaghi’ and ‘Rock On’,” Shraddha said at the launch of photographer Dabboo Ratnani’s calendar. Arjun Kapoor has been finalized to star opposite Shraddha in the adaptation of Chetan Bhagat’s “Half Girlfriend”, to be directed by her “Ek Villain” director Mohit Suri. Earlier, Sushant Singh Rajput was set to star in it but he backed out due to date issues. The

names of actresses Alia Bhatt and Kriti Sanon were being discussed, but it was Shraddha who bagged the role. The remake of Mani Ratnam’s Tamil film “O Kandhal Kanmani” will be helmed by “Saathiya” director Shaad Ali and will reunite her with rumoured real¬life love Aditya Roy Kapur after their blockbuster “Aashiqui 2”. Karan Johar’s Dharma Productions will produce the film and it will have music by maestro A.R. Rahman. Shraddha, who had shown her dancing skills in “ABCD 2”, will display her singing skills in “Rock On 2” and “Baaghi”, which sees her reuniting with school friend Tiger Shroff.

Jennifer Aniston has 15 pet chickens.

Om Puri excited about his first Pakistani film The ‘Cake’ actress and her husband Justin Theroux take great care of their feathered friends and have “super fun” collecting fresh eggs every morning. She said: “We have a chicken coop. We inherited it with the property when we bought it. “We have about 15 chickens in the backyard. For holidays, we’ve received six or eight baby chicks over the last two years. They’re adorable. “You have to separate them for the big kids. You have to create a little fence between the babies [and the adults], because the grown-ups are nasty, until they mature. “To go in and pick the eggs is super fun. We feed them in the mornings. They love rice. “My friends’ kids come over,

and they can pick the eggs, too. It’s a fun thing we do.” Both the 46-year-old actress and her 44-year-old spouse enjoy “tinkering” in the kitchen, and their chickens’ eggs play a big part in their culinary creations. Speaking to Yahoo! Food, Jennifer said: “Justin and I both love to tinker in the kitchen. “We make a pasta carbonara that’s so easy. We have eggs from our chickens, and then we make it ‘skinny style’ where we use turkey bacon instead of real bacon, eggs, and parmesan. No oil, butter or creams. And we use pasta water to make it juicier. “Justin’s great at making breakfast. He makes a great huevos rancheros, which I’m fortunate to be at the end off.”

Indian veteran actor Om Puri says he “really enjoyed working” on his first Pakistani film “Actor In Law”, which has an unusual script. “It’s an unusual script. I loved the script so, I decided to do this film. This is my first Pakistani film. I really enjoyed working on the film. I recently completed my shoot,” Om Puri, who had left for Karachi for the film’s shooting on December 31 last year and returned on Monday, told IANS. He also praised the team of “Actor In Law”, which is directed by Nabeel Qureshi and produced by Fizza Ali Meerza. “I had a great and talented team and they have shot the film very professionally. It falls in the category of films like ‘Bol’ and ‘Khuda Kay Liye’,” he shared. The actor, who entered the Indian film industry in 1975 with “Chor Chor Chhupja”, added that he did not find “any kind of animosity” and that the Pakistanis were “extremely kind”. He also said that he was approached for one more Pakistani film, but he didn’t have the dates. “Even that’s a wonderful story though.” Asked about the recent Pathankot attack, he said: “Whatever happened in Pathankot was very sad. Even during the press conference, I said ‘My request is whoever is behind this, I am requesting them it’s not worth it’.”

Ghap Shap with with BBC Asian Network’s

Noreen Khan on marriage and staying positive.

by Adeeba Sanna Zahoor Noreen Khan is a hugely popular radio and TV presenter. She currently takes the much sought after drive time slot at the BBC’s Asian Network radio station. She balances that with being a business woman, having her own accessories and clothing line and has recently started her Noreen Khan - OFF MIC vlog. Having always had a passion for music, Noreen knew she was destined for the music industry, and after volunteering at her local hospital radio show when she was younger, she knew this is where she wanted to be. And here she is, chatting to Asian Style Magazine on the topic of her latest vlog last week: “Why aren’t you married yet?”. Welcome Noreen, you mention in your Vlog that people send you messages frequently asking you when you will be getting married etc, however, do you also get pressure from your family or do they have the same viewpoint and understanding as yourself? I’m very fortunate that my parents and family have never pressurised me about marriage. My mum is very open minded and totally understands where I’m coming from and simply says ‘Noreen when the time is right it will happen for you, I’m not worried that you’re single’. I’m very lucky I have very cool parents!

I suggest you focus on things that are positive in your life and try to do things that make you happy. Again we are so conditioned to believe if you don’t have this that or the other you can’t be happy or complete.” Noreen Khan What gives you the strength to ignore pressure, considering you’re a public figure and therefore asked these questions many times, as you say in your video? I’ve always been mentally very strong which I get from my parents so I’m never really phased by much. The constant marriage questions have never bothered me much and luckily I can brush it off. Plus my life is very busy so I don’t have time to let it affect me! Would you feel incomplete if you didn’t marry? Hard to say as I’ve not decided I don’t want to marry, ask me in 10 years if I’m still single. Why do you think women are marrying later now than ever before? Because we have more choices meaning we want to pursue careers, travel and do things so marriage isn’t at the top of our agenda. What about those women who don’t

have a successful career to fall back on like yourself? A lot of women are seen as either housewives or career women, if you fall into neither of these brackets, what do you suggest one’s focus could be? I suggest you focus on things that are positive in your life and try to do things that make you happy. Again we are so conditioned to believe if you don’t have this that or the other you can’t be happy or complete. Do you think there is a greater pressure on women rather than men to marry by as certain age and if so why? There’s definitely more pressure on women as we are the ones who have children and that’s something we get reminded about regularly! What do you think can be done to minimise pressure put on Asian women to marry by a certain age? We need to start talking

more and opening up our minds. After my first vlog I had so many women and men message and tweet me saying thank you for doing the video it’s helped me so much or I will show it to my parents to help them understand it’s ok to

be single for now! You can catch Noreen Khan on BBC Asian Network weekdays from 1:30-5pm and check out her vlog on the link below: https:// www.youtube.com/ watch?v=g6DKU6p5G68

Akshay Kumar: Who would have thought, the action packed comedy clown ‘Akshay Kumar’ would want to make so many real life dramas, where the action becomes painfully raw, and the stories hit home so hard it makes you look at life a little more differently… He is Bollywood’s most versatile actor. The superstar says he feels very lucky and is loving his work right now. We spoke with the ‘Khiladi’ of Hindi cinema about his upcoming film, Airlift, box office success and more. In a frank and exclusive interview Akshay tells all. There was a period where you were doing mainly action and then comedy roles, and now there seems to be a move (a successful one at that) to doing true life stories. Do you pre-plan the genre’s you want to do, or is it a case of what’s being

offered by producers? I try not to plan or think too far ahead. Who

would have thought, the action packed comedy clown ‘Akshay Kumar’ would want to make so

many real life dramas, where the action becomes painfully raw, and the stories hit home so hard

it makes you look at life a little more differently… Also It was actually nice to take a break from all the fighting I’ve performed throughout 2015!! It’s been a very physically brutal year on my body, though I can’t tell you enough how much I still enjoy it. But to finally play a successful rich man, even though I am rich for only five minutes of the film, it is my status and way of working that saves so many lives. To shoot someone else’s story, Rajput himself ‘God Rest His Soul’ should have been made a national hero, so to recreate his struggle, his empathy to his fellow Indians was easier for me to understand than I first thought, because in fact he did everything I would have tried to do in his position, I was in fact playing a businessman version of myself. I’m an extremely protective man, if something like this disaster was to ever

happen again, I hope to be that man in real life that provides the kind of safety people are looking for. The best part about this film is it makes you want to be that man as well, so to educate an audience not to let even the darkest of demons like Saddam Hussein control our lives, gives me pleasure already. This is not a jaw dropping film, this is an eye opening film!!! People are loving the trailer to Airlift and it’s very clear you have come a long way as an actor. What for you is more important today, box office success or critical acclaim? I can’t express how lucky I feel, especially with the kind of ambitious cinema we’ve had in 2015, it’s been a whopper of a year!! The feedback I’ve experienced for ‘Airlift’ is so immense and so genuine that I haven’t quite got my head round it yet.

Akshay stars in real life story - Airlift

As for box office I’m a very pragmatic man. I’ve reached that stage where the box office success of a film doesn’t mean as much to me as the interest or the appreciation it can earn wholeheartedly. Not all Blockbusters are worthy, I say that from my own experience, as wonderful as it is to break records, there are very few that make it into the ‘Cult Club’ forever. These are so precious and rare, no one can dish out a ‘Cult’ every year, but there’s no harm in entertaining people while you wait eagerly for that magical script/screenplay that blows the audience away for the rest of their lives. And I’m happy making films that intrigue, excite, entertain people while I search for my next ‘Hera Pheri’ ‘Waqt’ or ‘Namaste London’ ;0) You seem extremely passionate about ‘AirLift’ to the extent of wanting the story to be told in Indian history

books. Do you find you’ve become attached to the character and the story of the film? There is always pressure when you have to slip into the shoes of a real person and to do justice to that role. Performing the role of Ranjit Katyal has been particularly challenging for me, because I’ve had to put myself in his position, the great thing is, he’s a phenomenal human being, so the honour of playing him it’s just wonderful, what a man, what a hero he was... You’re doing around five films a year, whilst other actors are saying they find it hard to play so many different characters in one year, hence stick to doing one film a year. What’s the secret to being able to switch from intense true life to then doing a comedy like Houseful 3? By the time ‘Airlift’ releases, this will be my fifth film within 12 months, so when I work this hard & this much, it gives me more freedom to branch out into many different aspects of Hindi cinema. You see I don’t like to put all my eggs into one basket, I’m not ready to only pray for one humungous success in a year, not yet anyway. I’m actually really enjoying the full mix match of genres I’m playing with right now. It keeps me on my toes & the audience happy that they know I’m not dishing out the same kind of cinema that works in hope it’ll make money. What do you enjoy

Akshay shows he is a versatile actor in comedy, action and real life roles. Seen here in Housefull 2

playing the most, comedy, romantic or action? I think the villain always enjoys so much in major part of the film’s duration. He fixes up the heroine, runs around her. The hero is always busy protecting and working for his sister and mother. Only in the

last five minutes of the film he gets beaten. I want to play a villain’s role more often. There are many untouched genres. Even in comedy there are so many things in which I actually want to catch up with. Finally, would you like to tell our readers why they should go watch

Airlift? Airlift is such an inspiring and great story which has never been told before. It’s not just a film; it’s an insight into the harsh realities of war and the bravery. Brave civilians travelled tirelessly through deserted terrain in desperate hope that

their fellow Indians from their beloved motherland would have the courage to ‘airlift’ them all out of Kuwait, where they had made a new life away from India. However, now they needed desperately to be brought back to safety. Even when people turn their backs on India in search of better horizons, India never turns its back on its people. A story so true that it makes you love your country even when you have forgotten how to!

Natural beauty The UK beauty industry is worth £17 billion and employs around one million workers nationwide, making it one of the most lucrative industries in the country.

The average woman is thought to spend a massive £100,000 on beauty products throughout her lifetime. We clearly love the process of making ourselves look beautiful, and it is this enjoyment that drives a rapidly growing industry. Well, this is where we come in. We believe the best beauty is natural beauty, and as its New year, we’re

helping you make the resolution of spending less. Our beauty team have found lots of simple ways to help you feel more beautiful without paying heavy prices and above all minus the toxic chemicals. We hope you like our top 10 easy, yet natural and luxurious beauty treatments.

Banana and Egg Hair Treatment Moisturising Nail Treatment

Looking for a little more shine in your hair? Simply mix one egg and a mashed up banana. Apply it as a thick paste

to your hair and leave it on for 10 – 30 minutes. Wash it out as you would your usual hair washing ritual (if you usually use a store-bought conditioner you’ll probably only need to condition the ends). Enjoy lushes shiny hair, without breaking the bank and with added natural protein.

Soak your nails in olive oil for five minutes. And then sit back and admire your pretty hands.

ASIAN STYLE MAGAZINE Jan 2016, 1st Edition

Simple Honey Face Mask Raw honey is naturally anti-bacterial and a super quick way to get soft, beautiful skin. Once a week use a tablespoon or so of raw honey (not the processed stuff found in most supermarkets) and gently warm it by rubbing your fingertips together. Spread on your face. Leave on for 5 – 10 minutes and then use warm water to gently rinse it off and pat dry. Bask in the honey glow on your face.

25

Elbow and Knee Exfoliate and Skin Brightener

Rough patches on your elbow and knees? To help soften those patches cut an orange in half and rub it on your elbows and knees. Enjoy the citrus smell. Rinse off the sticky mess when you are done

Gentle Body Scrub Mix a 2 to 1 ratio of olive oil and sea salt to make a quick and effective body scrub. This helps get rid of dead skin cells creating softer, more glowing skin. And this natural beauty tip is much cheaper that expensive store bought body scrubs.

Easy Deep Conditioning Hair Treatment Want super soft, hydrated hair? Use melted coconut oil as a deep conditioning hair and scalp treatment. Massage coconut oil into your scalp and then work it through your hair. Leave it on for a couple of hours and then wash it out using shampoo (no need to condition unless you have really long hair and then maybe just the ends.) Note: Keep in mind that coconut oil will saturate your hair with awesome goodness… that can be really hard to get out with just baking soda and *some* natural shampoos. You may want to try just a little coconut oil on a little section of hair and see if you can get it out before you do this. Otherwise you might have really greasy (but soft!) hair for a few washes.

Simple Toxic-Free Shaving Cream Use coconut oil on your legs as a natural replacement for your shaving cream. Talk about a simple, natural beauty tip.

All Natural Black Head Removal Place 4 or 5 drops of raw honey on an open lemon wedge. Then rub the lemon on your face for a minute, emphasizing any trouble areas. Leave the mixture on for 5 minutes and rinse with cold water. (Keep in mind that citrus can make your skin photosensitive so it’s best to do this before bed rather than before going outside).

Dry Brushing for Better Skin Dry brushing is a simple detoxification process for your body. It stimulates a number of organs through a gently massage. It also helps the lymphatic system, eliminates dead skin coatings, strengthens the immune system, can eliminate cellulite, stimulates the hormones, and can help tighten skin through better circulation. Best of all, it’s cheap and easy. So there you have some great natural beauty tips. However, do remember, these tips are not quick fixes. They require good sleep, stress management, proper nutrition, and physical exercise. Remember that real beauty is a result of taking care of your body on a daily basis and as they say at Loreal, because you’re worth it!

DESIG NERS

Jan 2016, 1st Edition

to the stars descend upon

London by Ayesha Babar

Have you been finding yourself drooling over ‘that’ lehenga that Kareena Kapoor Khan wore in her last film? Or maybe Deepika Padukone’s wardrobe in Bajirao Mastani? Well, London got lucky this weekend when some of the leading designers from the subcontinent showcased their latest collections at the Aashni & Co. wedding show. The mega event, presented

in association with Mustang, was a oneday extravaganza at the prestigious Dorchester Hotel in Mayfair, London. While the main Ball Room was pretty much filled to capacity with bride-to-be’s, families and friends, the venue itself looked nothing short of a film set courtesy of florist Zita Elze’s magic! The event saw the famous Manish Malhotra, Kolkata’s master

couturier, Sabyasachi Mukherjee, Gaurav Gupta, Anju Modi, Masaba Gupta, Anamika Khanna and arguably Pakistan’s top designer, Faraz Manan, come together under one roof. The one of its kind event was also special because all these designers were personally attending to clients giving advice on what worked and what didn’t! We asked these leading

designers to share their thoughts on the statement trends for 2016 brides for our readers. ‘Brides are experimenting like never before!’ exclaimed Masaba Gupta, who herself only recently got married. ‘They now come and tell me they want something that makes them stand out and that people will remember.’

ASIAN STYLE MAGAZINE Jan 2016, 1st Edition

Anamika Khanna, who is actress Sonam Kapoor’s go-to designer for Cannes and other red carpet appearances agreed with Masaba on this. ‘Certainly brides are now even asking for fusion dresses; pieces that they can wear again too after the wedding. Last year, I was surprised at how many girls wanted to dress up in pastels including whites and ivories, which have traditionally not been considered bridal colours.’ Gaurav Gupta, who counts Hollywood celebrities as clients and is the person behind some of Deepika Padukone’s most iconic red carpet looks in recent times welcomes the changing attitudes towards bridal wear and thinks it down to younger India being more influenced by global fashion and wanting to incorporate some of those cuts into their clothes for their special occasions. ‘Also, girls these day’s work very hard on their bodies and shorter tops and cut-out pieces have been huge trends so that they can show off their hard work!’ Faraz Manan, who is Pakistan’s favourite fashion child at the moment, showcased his intricately embellished dresses much to the ladies’ delight. His was a welcome addition to this year’s show as he introduced beautiful Pakistani cuts and motifs in pastels, silvers and golds - perfect for the spring and summer weddings. He echoed similar sentiments to Anamika and Masaba saying that brides these days want outfits that are a good balance between bling and subtle. ‘ If there is a lot of sparkly embroidery on an outfit then clients

27

definitely prefer more muted colours. No one wants OTT anymore, thankfully! Sabyasachi, who is on every bride-to-be’s wish list with his beautifully embellished sarees and lehengas, still feels that nothing beats a good traditional red lehenga for your big day.

to experiment with their reception and mehendi/ sangeet outfits, they do like a good dose of tradition when it comes to the dress they are getting married in!’ We could tell the ladies agreed seeing the massive queues at the Sabyasachi stall. The busiest stall of the day belonged to Bollywood’s darling, who possibly has everyone from Kareena Kapoor Khan to Gauri Khan on speed dial, Manish Malhotra! Manish, who was on hand to take orders for bridals had come with his latest collection of dresses perfect for brides and bridesmaids. When I asked him his one go to mantra for what makes a perfect bridal, he revealed that the one must-have is, ‘drama’. ‘All eyes are rightfully on the bride and she should razzle dazzle on her big day! So there you have it - all the key trends to follow while choosing your bridal attire straight from these dreamy designers themselves!

Poets Corner

Tupac Amaru Shakur

Tupac Amaru Shakur also known by his stage names 2Pac and, briefly, Makaveli, was an American rapper and actor. It is claimed that Shakur has sold over 75 million records worldwide with his double disc album All Eyez on Me and his Greatest Hits said to be the best selling albums in the United States. He has been listed and ranked as one of the greatest artists of all time by many magazines, including Rolling Stone which ranked him 86th on its list of The 100 Greatest Artists of All Time. The themes of most of Shakur's songs revolved around the violence and hardship in inner cities, racism and other social problems. Both of his parents and several other people in his family were members of the Black Panther Party, whose ideals were reflected in his songs. His life ended tragically, after he was fatally shot in September 1996. Shakur had strong social and political views and was often seen on the wrong side of the law, but he is still loved and described by many as one of the best rappers of all time. Shakur's love of theater and Shakespeare also influenced his work. Shakur understood the Shakespearian psychology of inter-gang wars and inter-cultural conflict, and we can see some of this influence in his poem, ‘Life Through My Eyes’

Life Through My Eyes Life through my bloodshot eyes would scare a square 2 death poverty, murder, violence and never a moment 2 rest Fun and games are few but treasured like gold 2 me cuz I realize that I must return

2 my spot in poverty But mock my words when I say my heart will not exist unless my destiny comes through and puts an end 2 all of this

Win cinema a pair of cinema tickets It’s getting rave reviews, and it’s touted to be one of Akshay’s most promising performances this year. Airlift brings to the fore the little known story of how the peace-loving nation of Jordan helped in the evacuation of 170,000 Indian refugees from Kuwait back to their homeland of India during the Gulf War of 1990. Billed as the largest human evacuation in history, the incident has found its way into the Guinness Book of World Records. In a cynical world, where one often wonders what a country has done for them, this is a stark reminder of what the country did, not for one or ten, but for 170,000 of its own. Airlift marks an event in history which has almost been lost in the sands of time, but is an event we all need to remember. Ranjit Katyal (the character played by Akshay Kumar), along with the many Indian refugees, travel thousands of kilometres across the border into Amman, Jordan, where they find a safe passage across the border. From Amman, Jordan the Indian government flew over 488 Air India commercial flights over a period of 59 days to bring all the Indian civilians back to India. Airlift is directed by Raja Krishna Menon and stars Akshay Kumar and Nimrat Kaur (Homeland, The Lunchbox). The film releases internationally on 21 January 2016 in the UAE and 22 January internationally through B4U. So how about get 2 FREE tickets to watch this film?
