Road Traffic Accident Hotspot 6 SPECIAL INVESTIGATION: THE TRUTH ABOUT FACTORY FARMING

FOOD REVIEW: CURRY GOES GOURMET

19 BY GRAHAME ANDERSON A tragic early morning accident back in August provided a sobering reminder of how lives can be decimated when things go wrong on our roads. In Bradford, four young Asian men with great futures ahead of them were killed on Toller Lane on the City Ward border, when their BMW crashed on the way to a mosque. All were under the age of 23 and were old school friends. Such was the impact of this event more than 1,000 people turned out to pay their respects at the joint funeral.

16 THE PERENNIAL DISPUTE: MAWLID

Imam Muhammed Asim spoke passionately of the consequences of dangerous driving, and within weeks letters spreading this message were sent to city mosques by Bradford Road Safety Partnership. Thankfully there have been no further fatal accidents in the City across the Autumn months.

Dealing with The Problem Councillor Nussrat Mohammed (Lab, Heaton) told a meeting of Bradford Council’s Regeneration and Environment Overview and Scrutiny Committee it must be dealt with in the district. She said: “Every time there is a local fatality, there is a huge turnout at the funeral. Sermons are being given raising the consequences of dangerous driving, and they have an impact for a short period. But then after a while everything goes back to normal.” The Hard facts A Freedom of Information request made by Asian Sunday has revealed in the 12 month period to August 2018, a staggering total of 1,186 road traffic accidents had been recorded in City Ward alone. This included 994 carrying damage only, 164 with slight damage to vehicles,

26 serious incidents and two fatalities. This was by far and away the biggest in Bradford compared to Bowling and Barkerend, who recorded 577 RTA's including one fatality, and Keighley Central with 457 incidents and a single fatality. At the other end of the scale Wharfedale suffered 89 RTA'S without a single death. Figures issued to Asian Sunday by West Yorkshire police up to the end of July however, show a slight general decrease in City Ward over the past 36 months. But of course, one fatality anywhere is one too many in terms of the impact it can have on families. The Area City Ward is an electoral ward within the ..cont on pages 10 & 11

Warning to Bradford District

Householders in Bradford have been issued a warning not to put hazardous waste such as used hypodermic needles in their general or recycling waste bin.

Bradford Council’s Household Waste Recycling Centre’s are providing patients to return their needles there, if for any reason cannot be returned to a health facility.

recycling bins. They should be disposed of in the proper containers and returned to where they come from so they can be destroyed without causing risk to anyone.

Recycling employees are worried that staff whose job is to sort through the recycled waste are being put at a major risk by the needles.

Councillor Sarah Ferriby, Bradford Council’s Executive Member for Healthy People and Place said: “We don’t want needles in our

“Recycling collection and sorting staff have a very challenging job to do without having to put

up with serious risks to their health from items which should not be in the recycling stream.” This comes after a man was fined for burning a rubbish fire that was left near a residents home in Hollins Bank Lane Steeton, a court was told.

Boxes of needles or even plastic bottled overfed with needles have been retrieved from the recycling collection. A few of these have burst leaving potentially harmful needles or other contaminated products loose in the recycling stream. Clinical waste such as needles are hazardous and are requested to be returned to the chemist or other health facilities from where they came from. Staff will be able to point out hazardous waste bins where they can be deposited.

Bradford Meets Expectations of

Emerging Destination Honour

A recently published report into tourism in the Bradford district proves that it is living up to the “Emerging Luxury Destination in Europe Award”. Bradford received the award from The Luxury Travel Guide earlier this year.

The Cambridge Report displayed the amount of overnight trips made by visitors from abroad increased by 10 per cent compared to 2016. The report also demonstrates that around £134 million was spent by overnight visitors on trips to Bradford in 2017 which is an increase of 3 percent. 11.8 million tourist day trips were made to the Bradford district in 2017, a rise of 2 per cent compared to 2016 and has also identified a 5 percent increase in the amount spent by day trippers. The Bradford District tourist industry is now worth around £680.6 million, a 4 per cent increase from £656 million in 2016. It employs over 1000 more people than it did in 2016 with around 14, 531 jobs, an increase of 7 per cent, supported by the tourism industry in 2017. Councillor Sarah Ferriby, Bradford

Council’s Executive Member for Healthy People and Places said: "These figures show tourism is continuing to thrive in our district. We are seeing more and more UK and overseas visitors coming to the district to spend their time and money. “We have so much to offer visitors including fantastic events like Bingley Music Live, the award winning Bradford Literature Festival, the Bradford Festival and Illuminate. Our amazing Sparkling Bradford Christmas campaign has lots of festive fun for people enjoy in the run up to the big day. Also who can forget the stunning spectacles put on for when the Tour de Yorkshire comes to the district? “With excellent museums and galleries, including the National Science and Media Museum, the district continues to draw visitors from far and wide to see the worldclass installations and exhibitions that we put on.” Patricia Tillotson, Visitor and Business Development Manager at Bradford

Council, said: “Bradford is a cultural city with a flourishing arts scene. Our beautiful Alhambra Theatre, hosts West End productions and one of the most popular Pantomime’s in Yorkshire. “Our district has amazing countryside, combined with the former home of literary greats, such as the Bronte’s, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is first ever UNESCO City of Film and it is the Curry Capital of Britain, having won the title for six years in a row. The Bradford district has seen visitor numbers and tourism spend in the district increase year on year and this report confirms that Bradford is living up to its Emerging Destination accolade.” Bradford was once considered to be the wool capital of the world and is now proud to be the first ever UNESCO City of Film. The City Park, a brilliant awardwinning high tech water feature, adds to the latest of features in Bradford. The Bradford Broadway has also attracted

customers from all over the United Kingdom. Ian Ward, General Manager of Broadway, also chaired and won the BID Initiative which will see funding into leisure establishments and businesses. He told us: “The BID is working in the background at the moment, we’re putting an office and interviews together to sort everything out. The BID won’t come to life until December. Two and a half million pound investment in the City Centre which can only be good news to Bradford. The Broadway opened its doors in 2015, with new retailers and The Light Cinema being recently introduced, gave Bradford a strong push of reaching towards of being a leisure destination.

Tributes pour in for former council leader Ian Greenwood, who died age 68 Respected politician and former leader of Bradford Council, Ian Greenwood has died at the age of 68. In a career in local politics spanning four decades Councillor Greenwood was twice leader of the Council. He represented Little Horton ward from 1995 to 2012 and returned to the Council this year to represent Bolton and Undercliffe ward. He had previously served as a County Councillor on West Yorkshire County Council. Councillor Greenwood served as the Chair and latterly Vice Chair of the West Yorkshire Pension Fund and forged a national profile in the pensions industry as Chair of the Local Authorities Pensions Fund Forum (LAPFF) representing funds with a combined value of £230 billion. In 2013 he was awarded the OBE for services to local government. Leader Of Bradford Council, Coun Susan Hinchcliffe, said: “This is an enormous loss to Bradford District. For a generation, Ian was possibly the most recognisable and certainly one of the most influential figures in Bradford politics. He was immensely proud to be able to serve the people of his home city which he loved dearly and he wore his passion for the place and its people like a badge of honour. “Ian was a pragmatic, big tent politician motivated by an overwhelming desire to bring people together to do the right thing for Bradford. His leadership transcended cultural, community and political party boundaries and his legacy and impact will be long lasting.” Bradford Council’s Chief Executive, Kersten England, said: “Many, many people in the Council, the pension fund and across the District in our

communities, public services and businesses have worked with Ian over the years and will be sharing a huge sense of loss today. Ian worked tirelessly on behalf of Bradford bringing a unique and irreplaceable wealth of experience, wisdom and insight to his work.” Colleague and close friend MP Imran Hussain took to social media to express his grief. The Bradford East MP wrote: “It is with great sadness and a heavy heart that I write about the passing of my dear friend, Ian Greenwood. Ian was more than just a

colleague, he was a close and dear friend to me throughout both the good times and the bad, and I am proud to call him so. He will be deeply missed by the all of those who met him, and my thoughts and prayers are with his family at this deeply tragic time. For many years, Ian worked tirelessly for Bradford as a keen and devoted public servant, proud Bradfordian and supporter of the trade union movement. He was a giant of Bradford politics, leading the Council for many years, doing much to turn the City around and

make life better for its residents, and his passion, experience and character leaves a huge hole that will stand irreplaceable. His passing leaves us all poorer and is a tremendous loss to the City, the wider region and civic politics as a whole, but what will endure is his legacy of positive change across Bradford, his belief that we as a City are stronger when we all work and come together, and his drive to make Bradford an even better place.”

The Truth About Factory Farming

An Asian Sunday Special Investigation

by GRAHAME ANDERSON Factory farming has been dubbed one of the biggest human crimes against both animals and the planet. Our constant food demands set against a commercial backdrop and the pressures of modern life, has meant how the food reaches us has been largely ignored by consumers. It's believed by some, most animals finally arrive at slaughterhouses traumatised after months of ill treatment. Investigating the Process Asian Sunday has discovered the majority of counties in England have at least one industrial scale livestock farm. Across the UK however, this extends up to 800 all based on the United States model of

mega farming. These set ups are beginning to change the face of our countryside, and it's seen a rise in intensive factory farming of more than 25 per cent in recent years. It would seem modern demand from consumers has intensified commercial pressures on both food company's and farmers, to produce vast amounts of foodstuffs at the lowest possible price. To be deemed 'intensive', by the Environment Agency any farm must have on site 2,000 pigs, 40,000 birds or 750 breeding sows. Each farm needs to have a permit, though under British law there is no clear definition of what constitutes a factory farm in real terms. No complete statistics are kept, but our

research under Freedom of Information, has shown at least 789 such farms exist here in the UK. Each one is known in the industry as a concentrated

animal feeding operation. Controversial Methods Several artificial methods are employed to maintain

FEATURE animal health with the general aim of improving production and speeding physical growth. These can include the use of antimicrobial agents, vitamin supplements, and growth hormones. One of the problems seems to be however, animals can have their movement severely restricted – even being restrained in many cases, and all to produce cheaper food. What's more these densely populated factory farms create huge animal waste, and it's not uncommon for caged animals to be urinated on by those animals above them. In fact, the list of what might be deemed cruel practices can become quite sizeable, and this includes mutilation. 'VIVA' are Bristol based campaigners and advocates of the VEGAN approach supported by well- known people like actor Martin Shaw and musician Paul McCartney. They have film footage involving some of the biggest UK names in meat and dairy production. The result is a video called 'Cruel Brittania, UK life and death on British Farms'. It's available from the group’s website, and they are freely encouraging the public to take a look in order to get their message across. www.viva.org.uk Animal Aid’s filming of the abuse of

pigs in an abattoir in Brentwood, Essex, saw two men eventually jailed. The defendants claimed ‘abuse was part of the culture of the slaughterhouse’. In a distressing video, a slaughterer is seen pushing a lit cigarette onto the foreheads and snouts of three different pigs, forcing hot ash into one of the animals’ faces. One pig was beaten 30 times in just over a minute Faith and Farming The Quran tells of how The Prophet Muhammad forbade people to capture and cage birds, burn anthills, and whip or brand animals. Muslims are forbidden from eating the meat of al-mujathama) —animals penned in and killed under stress for sport. In fact, an ill-treated animal is said to testify against the one who abused it on the Day of Judgement. When animals are slaughtered for food, this must be done to Islamic procedure, in order to cause as less suffering as possible. HMC Report A recent report involving HMC found: 'Muslims account for 20 per cent of lamb consumption in this country and a small but increasing amount of beef. This alone makes the Halal meat market therefore a multi-million-pound contributor to the British economy. All told, 90 per cent of Muslim communities consume Halal meat. More than eight out of 10 Muslims tend to consume meat regularly with almost six out of 10 indicating they eat meat most of the

time. There are no discernible generational differences.

a full life, able to move freely and display their natural behaviours.”

Popular in Bradford 'A small number of meat suppliers use HMC certification, with the organisation being particularly popular in parts of Bradford, London and the South East. Many of those butchers reported HMC had become synonymous with meat that is 100 per cent Halal – a view shared by their customers.

Asian Sunday approached HFA (Halal Food Authority) and HMC to see if their certification processes accounted for compassion for animals, as per the Islamic guidelines of showing compassion for animals. Following weeks of following up, neither were able to provide comment.

'Sadly, many other butchers have never heard of the HMC or any other certification bodies. Butchers do acknowledge such certification is expensive. Some also revealed they had found themselves short of stock when their usual supplier had failed to deliver, and they were forbidden to source from non-HMC suppliers as an alternative.'

The Free Range, Alternative Free range is the term given to describe a method of farming where the animals, for at least part of the day, can roam freely outdoors. It can also mean they have free access to either graze or forage for food. Some critics believe not all of these areas are fully regulated, and free range can also be interpreted in different ways.

Compassion for Animals Emma Slawinski, Director of Campaigns at Compassion in World Farming told Asian Sunday: “With around 70 per cent of farm animals in the UK kept in factory farms, this is a practice we should be moving away from, not towards. Animals are not simply commodities, whose sole purpose is production. “The huge implications on animal welfare, human health and our environment cannot be ignored. There is a better way. By choosing cage-free, free range and organic produce you are providing farm animals with the opportunity to live

We've all it seems, created commercial pressures because of our fast-paced modern lives, and not least an unwillingness to pay higher prices to help raise standards of animal welfare within farms.

Balancing the Picture In defence of factory farming a British poultry spokesperson said: “Birds reared on intensive farms enjoyed good standards. These are high health and welfare farms. The husbandry of the birds is the crucial element here – the image of hens roaming around a farm is long gone. That's not how chicken is farmed anymore.” Creating A Benchmark Making farm animal welfare an integral part of a solid business strategy is much easier said than done, especially given our demand for things like fast food. We've all it seems, created commercial pressures because of our fast-paced modern lives, and not least an unwillingness to pay higher prices to help raise standards of animal welfare within farms. The good news is the 'Business Benchmark on Farm Animal Welfare', offers a leading global measure of business performance, so we can see at a glance which companies are doing their bit to make a difference. In its six years the report has become a leading pointer toward strategy change and approach within the food industry. It's true to report more than half of the world’s leading food companies have now published targets on farm animal welfare. Of the 110 companies covered by the 2017 Benchmark including 'Macdonalds', 52 or 47 per cent now have explicit board or senior management oversight of farm animal welfare and 79 or 72 per cent have published formal improvement objectives. There is so much more still to do however, to make a significant change to the way we farm animals. It seems clear the argument against factory farming is growing apace. It all comes down to how we want our animals to live and the conscience of each individual.

Multi Million Pound plan revealed to create new “Bradford Exhibition Centre”

by ANISAH ARIF

Grand plans have been submitted for a brand-new “multi-million pound” event space supposedly named the “Bradford Exhibition Centre” to replace a longempty, neglected site. The site, which was previously occupied by Alston Mills wool combing plant, has been empty since 1983 when the buildings were demolished. The proposal was unveiled to Bradford Council and would hope to see the creation of an event venue, made up of four separate spaces, and 15 business units on Princeroyd Way, off Ingleby Road. The application, submitted by Ingleby Developments and TH3M Architects, displays CGI Images showing how the land would be transformed. It shows that strong emphasis has been placed on creating a building of “high architectural merit” to enhance the local area. It adds: "The proposed development at Princeroyd Way aspires to create a new exhibition/community facility for local residents and aims to create a unique destination for individuals and businesses from around the UK to host events, exhibitions and wedding functions, which in turn is hoped to improve the local economy and help in the further regeneration of the city. "The proposed development aims to create a unique architectural landmark in the form of the 'Bradford Exhibition Centre' or 'BEC' in short, at the same time providing small scale industrial units which are currently in high-demand due to limited availability of similar building types in the city and surrounding regions. "The mixed use development provides

opportunity for employment generation and start-up enterprise occupying the units, in-turn improving the socio-economic status of the local district."The applicants are serious about delivering the project and say, subject to the plans being given the green light, they are "eager" to get going, with funds and investment in place.

"The proposed scheme will finally bring this long-derelict site back into productive and beneficial use," says the application. The application says the "significant undertaking" has been "very carefully" designed in relation to the site, the neighbouring housing, other businesses and the immediate and wider road network. The events building is described as being of a "high architectural quality" and contemporary design, which will "offer a clear and welcome contrast to much of the mundane and, in too many cases, poor architectural quality of the surroundings". This new proposal has the potential to create new employment and as the increasing demand for event and wedding venue is becoming clear in the Bradford area, it may give locals a place to function events. However, the concern for additional traffic and parking problems will be an on-going issue for objectors within the area. Mike Cartwright from the West and North Yorkshire Chamber of Commerce told the Asian Sunday: “Bringing more vacant buildings and sites back into use has to be a good thing. It improves the landscape of the locality and adds to the vibrancy of the area. We have far too many empty buildings and vacant plots of land that could be better utilised in some way. This scheme would enhance the facilities offer for business and leisure events, create jobs and assist with regeneration. However, we have to have the right

developments in the most suitable places, of course, and other factors such as parking and access need to be taken into account, aswell as having the best blend of businesses and organisations from different sectors. We look forward to hearing of the application’s progress.” The new venture is just one of many that aim to create a specialised space for event operations. Recently opened, Leeds Plaza on Leeds Road,

contains many Asian designer formal and party wear which has successfully attracted many local people wanting to find the perfect party wear. Prior to this, a previous attempt was made to convert a nearby empty mill and former clothing store into an Asian venue. The Bradford Council refused the plans, named Westfield House, saying the site did not have enough parking for the proposed use as a banqueting suite for the use of weddings.

rOLE OF COUNCILLOrS The duties of a local councillor can be defined as to: direct and control the affairs of the local authority; take key policy decisions defining the objectives of the Council and allocating the resources required to attain them and keep under review the progress and performance of local services (social care, education, housing and so forth). Councillors are also known as Elected Members. There are 90

councillors on the Council – three for every Council ‘ward’ (an area of the district). These councillors are members of the public who put themselves forward for the role and are elected by the people who live in the area they represent. Councillors are paid an allowance, but are not employed by the Council. They can also claim for out-ofpocket expenses, such as travel, incurred in the course of their duties. Councillors may

belong to a political party, or they may stand as an independent. Those who belong to a political party form ‘groups’ on the Council.

There is a definite trend to inexperienced drivers taking control of new and more powerful vehicles. With this in mind police are also working with hire companies with regard to possible age restrictions.” The Insurance Factor So, has the high RTC figure resulted in higher car insurance premiums in City Ward? In truth, a number of factors are involved with individual insurance companies rating certain areas differently to others. Someone living in an area with low crime is likely to get a cheaper car insurance quote than someone living in an area where crime is regularly happening regardless of RTC'S So the answer is no. In fact, according to Moneysupermarket.com, Girlington, Manningham and Lower Grange have the most expensive premiums in Bradford, with the highest being recorded at £818-79. The AA say the City of Bradford isone of the top 15 for the most expensive car insurance in the UK, with a premium weighted average of £847-19. Most road traffic accidents aren't crime related.

They told Asian Sunday: “Essentially, car insurance premiums are based on risk so a whole range of factors combine to deliver a quoted annual car insurance premium. If there are more claims such as car thefts or thefts from cars, car vandalism, or uninsured drivers, from a particular location such as Bradford City, this indicates there is a higher risk for the insurer of customers making a claim – thus the premium will be higher to reflect that risk.

number of fatal and serious road casualties in West Yorkshire by 50 per cent by 2026. Nazam Azam added: “We must keep doing everything possible collectively to make City Ward a safer place for drivers, residents and pedestrians.” Number Plate Recognition Recent investment of more than £2m in Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) technology has already led to the arrest of thousands of road and traffic offenders, though more still needs to be done. Not Clear Cut The conclusion seems to be a range of factors are involved including police budget cuts, the rise in noninsured drivers, speeding, human error, an increase of powerful cars on the roads and in some cases, lack of regard for pedestrians, local residents and other road users. It's clear however these issues need to be tackled quickly as Bradford fights to become a safer place for motorists and pedestrians alike.

Let's break the 'circle' Those who know me, know I am a very highly opinionated person and have a very no nonsense approach to most issues, especially those concerning my hometown.

businesses. So how did I get here? Well, I didn't reach my goal by breaking the glass ceiling but by breaking the circle.

Yes, I love my birth city, warts and all . And yes I will always defend it, whenever someone tries to talk Bradford down.

Bradford like most cities it's size is a very close knit community with the business and political communities being the most exclusive of them all.

Nevertheless, I am also a realist and so when there are issues of concern, they must also be discussed................... constructively.

Our politics has often been marred with the term 'biraderi' meaning clan and the claims go that if you have a big clan you are likely to succeed.

So, here's the issue - During a discussion with our youth, I was told blatantly that Bradford has 'no opportunities' for young people and that's why those who are ambitious or talented end up going to places like Leeds or even further afield looking for opportunities.

The business community is no different it has it's own network and if you are part of the 'circle' you're let in and you can successfully do business. The further up the ladder you go the clique's are tighter and they tend to look out for 'their people'

I was somewhat disturbed at hearing this, especially considering Bradford has been labelled, the UK's youngest city, with more than 30% of our population are under the age of 20, and we have the highest number of under-16s in the country. Yet, we have one of the highest levels of youth unemployment in the UK. According to statistics 26% of our young people were out of work in 2015, up from 11.3% in 2004. These statistics definitely do back up the conversation I had with this group of young people. If I am brutally honest and I rewind back, even I as a youngster faced the same and dashed down to London to make a name for myself as the opportunities in my hometown were almost non-existant. However, when I look at my achievements today, my work is in Bradford which has blossomed thanks to the support of local Bradford

These are experiences I have witnessed so while may not be everyone's experience, but they are certainly my experiences. So when I rewind back seven years, I was not known and had just started in the media world. Looking for chances many doors were closed on me, not because of my talent, (to be honest no one cared to see my talent, I was asked questions such as who are you? What connections do you have? Well I don't but I know I am ambitious and I know I am talented. Well we can't work with you, because we support such and such, so no matter

what your offer, we're not interested!!!

For an impressionable young woman who is trying to carve out her career, those responses were difficult to absorb. I kept looking to break this glass ceiling, but realised even before the glass ceiling I need to break this 'circle' and force people to let me in and give me a chance. I am not saying it's the same for our youth today, but what I am saying is that the only way we can change those statistics and opinion of our youth is by opening up the door of opportunities. If you are reading this and are in a position of influence then please just open the door a bit more and allow yourself to sit and listen to someone you don't know, and learn about their talent. If you can give them that one opportunity to prove their talent. Remove the gate keeper's in your organisation, in the system and allow as many people to be heard, to be given just that one opportunity to prove they are capable and surely this will make Bradford a city of opportunities. Let me know your thoughts. If you have struggled to get anywhere or be given a chance to showcase your talent, then drop me a line at editor@asiansunday.co.uk and I will make sure you are heard,

Kareena Kapoor Khan:

We have to have gumption as an actor Actress Kareena Kapoor Khan, who was last seen onscreen in "Veere Di Wedding", says that actors or actresses have to have gumption to do whatever they feel like doing irrespective of any medium.

Kareena was interacting with the media when she launched her radio show titled "What Women Want with Kareena Kapoor Khan" on Ishq 104.8 FM in India. When asked whether it is difficult for actresses in the film industry to follow their heart because it's consistently telling them to be a certain way and to look a certain way and they lose out on roles if they speak up, she said, "I think in any field there would be this issue. We hear about it a lot because we are in the film industry and lot of reporting is done of this field. "I am sure it's everywhere, but I think today we have lot of opportunities and pathbreaking actors be it Radhika Apte and the girl in 'Sacred Games' Kubra (Sait played role of transgender in the web series), so we are having these girls who are fighting back and doing these kind roles which is brilliant. So, I think we have to have gumption as actors or actresses that this is what we are going to do be it on any medium. "I think actor's colour,

shape or size, nothing matters. If you are putting your best effort, then your hard work and talent will succeed, and we are building up to that." Asked whether the film industry is giving a secure environment to women at the work place, she said, "Of course that's what we want. We are openly having conversation today. The fact that so many women have come out and spoken, I think that's a start. "In fact, earlier people haven't spoken for years and today people have come forward so, I really appreciate those women who had the courage to stand up and talk because that is going to help all of us to change our workplace and to give ourselves security." Kareena also urged that we have to keep this conversation alive. "It doesn't matter whether you are biggest superstar or the smallest, but women have to be secured and most importantly, we have to keep momentum going and keep conversation alive. If we keep that alive a lot will change." Kareena expressed.

I focus more on character than genre: Sunny Deol

National award-winning Bollywood actor Sunny Deol who is coming up with a new film "Bhaiaji Superhit" says that though he has a tag of an action hero, he does not choose a script based on genre but character and story.

Asked about "Bhaiaji Superhit", an action comedy, Deol told media in India: "I focus more on the character than any genre because the film is about storytelling. If the story is good, the character is well written, I go for it." Set in Varanasi, the story of the film revolves around 'bhaiaji' who wants to be an actor in Hindi cinema. Deol, who had a great time shooting the film, said: "Since we worked with good actors in the film, every scene turned out right. When good actors collaborate things become Interesting"

"Bhaiaji Superhit", which also features Preity Zinta, Arshad Warsi, Shreyas

Talpade, and Ameesha Patel among others, is releasing worldwide on November 23.

INTERVIEW

ALI FAZAL: "Victoria and Abdul was a peaking moment for me"

Ali Fazal has been on an amazing journey between Hollywood and Bollywood. The actor who was noticed in Fukrey, went on to star in a lead role opposite Dame Judi Dench in Victoria and Abdul. But that wasn’t his first calling to Hollywood, prior to that he did a cameo in the famous franchise Fast & Furious 7. Since then the actor has signed up a slate of films which includes the new Amazon Prime video series Mirzapur. We caught up with the jovial Ali Fazal, ahead of the release of Mirzapur, to talk about his role in Mirzapur and more. Over to Ali.

What attracted you to the act in Mirzapur? It was something very different and I am glad I did this. If you weren’t offered the role of Guddu which other character would you have fancied playing? That’s an interesting question. I probably would have played the antagonist. Munna! Munna Tripathi. Yah, him or one of the girls. I think the girls are pretty badass.

Well, we don’t get to see much of them in the trailer, so I am looking forward to seeing how their roles pan out. Oh yeah, the girls are quite interesting. The girls of Mirzapur are wow. You’ve stunned us in the trailer with how effortlessly you fit into the character of Guddu and how easy you explain the rules of murder in a scene. Your diction and gangster look is so different from most of the other roles you have played. How did you prepare for your scenes?

INTERVIEW I had to crack this a lot, I mean the dialect. I had to get the dialect right, I wasn’t really aware of the area in Uttar Pardes. We worked on the body and I had to train for a couple of months. Also, at the time I was busy promoting Victoria and Abdul, so I couldn’t really spend any time with my team. My readings were only with my Director, so we were just hoping that I could just do it on the day I arrived. I literally just landed from my last screening in LA to Mirzapur. It was quite a contrast. So, I had 16 hours on flight to get into it. Somehow my walk my demeanor and everything changed and it kind of became his (Guddu) walk and his body. What was the most challenging scene for you to play? It’s a lot of adrenaline from the word go for the show. One of the hardest scenes was…. the thing is I can’t give it away. It’s a beautiful scene and I am looking at myself in the mirror and I don’t know if I should cry or laugh. There is no emotion and I remember we just improvised. It was

not even in the script eventually. Something magical happened that day. It’s a very emotional scene. God, I wish I could give it away. It’s right the tail end of the series. It’s the marriage scene, I walk into the bathroom and I am looking at myself in the mirror and that’s it. You will know.

You’ve done films, television and web series, which platform do you find as an actor you get the most scope to perform? This was a kind of part that I could go all over and perform, we had that liberty to do that on Mirzapur. I got to explore a totally different side of me. My body, in so many ways; my dialect my accent everything. But again, if I have to talk about enjoying a performance, then every film does that, but Victoria and Abdul was a peaking moment for me, the thing that StephenFrears managed to get out of me, was amazing. I have never seen myself like that on screen. As an actor when you’re performing you will know you’re looking a certain way on camera and then suddenly you see yourself and usually I am very critical of myself and I saw myself and I was bowled over. I was amazed that what Danny and Stephen captured. It almost makes you feel stripped off and vulnerable. You’re like sh*t, they saw me in that moment. That’s a really good feeling. Do you think there is a possibility for a

Mirzapur series 2? I don’t know you will have to see, you will have to ask Amazon, but I think there is a chance for a season 2. The story does have potential to go forward, because it is written a certain way. Is it true you’ve signed a film with Pradeep Sarkar? (Laughs) Yes, I did. I have just finished work on two other Bollywood films. One is Milan Talkies, which is due January 2019 and there’s another one called Prasthanam which is with Amyra and myself. It’s a remake of a very big hit movie down south and it’s the story of a father and son. So, it’s a different story. We’re still filming it. Mirzapur is now out on Amazon Prime and is co-produced by Excel Entertainment. well.

10 ‘Diet’ Foods That Could Make You Fat

Dieters have been warned that eleven seemingly healthy food choices could actually cause them to pile on the pounds.

The oats will give you the slow release energy you need and you can add banana or fresh berries for one of your five a day.

essential Omega-3 fatty acids is good for you, but when it comes layered in starchy rice and smothered in soy sauce, it’s a recipe for bloating disaster.

Granola for breakfast, a brown bread sandwich for lunch and washing them down with fruit juice may sound like a healthy meal plan but these ‘healthy’ foods could be causing you to gain weight.

2.Trail mixes Trail mix is often seen as a healthy alternative to snacking. But dried fruit can be full of extra sugar and mixed with nuts, a large bag can contain up to 3,000 calories.

Try instead: Fish that has been steamed or grilled. Make sure you get your fishy benefits by tucking into a plate of steamed salmon or grilled tuna steak a few times a week. The way they are cooked will mean they taste great without any salty condiments.

That’s according to the health and fitness experts at Vivotion.com who claim the usual suspects dieters turn to when trying to shed pounds can actually have the reverse effect.

Try instead: Portioned fruit, nut and seed mix If you limit your intake to 40g of dried fruit and nuts you’ll get all the nutrients you need without constantly grazing on the huge bags of trail mix. Try a handy bag to grab on the go for a nutritious balance of proteins, fats and carbs.

They say granola is packed with fat and sugar, and fruit juice contains more sugar than some fizzy drinks. Instead they suggest replacing them with truly healthy alternatives including porridge, peas and homemade kale chips. Drinks aren’t safe either, with the experts suggesting swapping sugary fruit juices for fruit tea coolers. A spokesman from Vivotion.com said: “With the large amount of choices and ease of these so-called healthy foods so readily available, it’s no wonder dieters keep going back for more. “Just because something is low in calories does not necessarily mean it’s the healthiest option. “It’s important to make sure that you have an adequate amount of fibre and protein in your diet too so you can keep those telltale pangs of hunger after a disappointing rice cake at bay.” Here are the site’s 11 diet foods you should avoid along with the best alternatives. 1.Granola It’s easy to see granola as a healthy breakfast option but most supermarket granolas are packed with fat and sugar. Granola does contain some healthy ingredients like low GI oats and nuts, which are a good source of fat. Try instead: Porridge Porridge made with rolled oats is a natural and healthy way to kick-start your day without any added sugars or preservatives. 3.Fruit juice Fruit juice is seen as a healthy start to the day and despite being packed full of vitamins and minerals fruit juice is also full of sugar. Even if it’s made with real fruit all the good stuff, like the fibre, has been removed. Try instead: Fruit tea soda If you like to have that fruity boost in your drink, make a pot of fruit herbal tea then leave overnight to chill. In the morning, top it up with soda water for a refreshing drink with little to no sugar. 4.Agave nectar Agave nectar is a syrup often added to food to give it a sweet kick. However, agave is known to contain high levels of fructose which in large amounts can cause elevated levels of insulin the fat storing hormone.

7.Rice Cakes Rice cakes have long been known as an alternative to snacking on fatty foods, as they contain very few calories. However, because they have pretty much nothing in them, they lack fibre and protein that leaves you craving food more than if you didn’t eat anything at all. Try instead: Celery with peanut butter. This is a perfect snack to munch on when you hit the mid-afternoon lull. This will contain both fibre and protein so will keep you fuller for longer. 8.Vegetable crisps These colourful alternatives to potatobased crisps are high in vitamins A and C and are supposedly healthy for you. However, they are highly salty and a handful can hold up to 150 calories and nine grams of fat. Try instead: Kale chips For a healthier and cheaper alternative, grab a bag of kale from your local supermarket, place them on a baking tray and coat with coconut oil. You can season with anything from chilli to miso paste. Bake on a low temperature for around an hour until the chips are light and crispy. 9.Wraps The healthy option of the sandwich is just as lethal. The wrap alone is very high in calories due to the fat and sodium content. Adding any fillings to it just piles on the calories.

The Perennial Dispute:

Mawlid by ANISAH ARIF

It’s that time of the year again. Where we see social media infused with alternating posts and videos from opposing sides about the permissibility of celebrating the Prophet Muhammad’s birthday. The squabbling of this debate has become more prevalent in recent years, where recognisable public figures from each party presented the solid reasons behind their standpoint. The Prophet Muhammad is deeply placed in the heart of Islam where Muslims use his actions as a way of life. His name mentioned nearly every day in every prayer, to seek blessings. No other human in the history of Islam comes above the Prophet Muhammad and no other human dares to. After all, his name is Muhammad, which means the most praised one. However, how to praise the most praised one, is one of many topics that is hovering in the air of the Islamic world. On one end of the spectrum you have strong disbelievers of the celebrating of the Prophet’s Birthday, i.e. Mawlid and on the other side, members in abundance who do celebrate this day to highest of their ability. The agreed date by Sunni Muslims is the 12th day of the Islamic month Rabbi Al-Awwal, whereas Shia Muslims celebrate on the 17th day. The many that celebrate spend this day cherishing the Prophet Muhammad’s memory and glorifying him by singing and reciting. This spiritual method plays across all over the world, from Damascus to Delhi, Pakistan to Timbuktu, where sweets are distributed and flags waved in streets, chanting his name ‘Ya Muhammad, Ya Muhammad’.

Their argument is that they are celebrating the birth of Islam and God’s most beautiful creation. By partaking in this day, they are getting closer to God and increasing their faith. Imam Asim, Founder of Al-Hikam Institute hosts Mawlid events every year for the community: “For many Muslims around the world, Rabi ul-Awwal is the time of the year where they celebrate the birth of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). It is important now more than ever before for Muslims to rejoice and unite at the Prophet Muhammad’s coming in to this world for us to study his blessed life and teachings. Though some object against this rejoicing and in turn creating tension within the Ummah, it’s evidence is found within the Shariah Law (Islamic Law) and we encourage everyone to rejoice”.

Others who beg to differ, insist that the celebration of this day is an act of Bid’ah (Innovation). Their argument is that the Qur’an and the Hadith (ways of the Prophet Muhammad) have already perfected the religion, thus any new addition to the practices of Islam is regarded as forbidden on the grounds that it is misguiding others. This party treats this day like any other and regards this commemoration completely unacceptable. The General Presidency of Scholarly Research and Ifta said: “It is a prohibited Bid’ah to hold a celebration on the night of the birth anniversary of the Prophet (PBUH). The Prophet (PBUH) is the most aware of his status and the proper manner of venerating him. He is the most

knowledgeable of the Shariah Law of Allah. It was not authentically reported that the Prophet (PBUH) celebrated his birthday, or the birthday of one of his previous fellow Prophets (PBUH) or the birthday of his Sahabah (Companions of the Prophet).”. Isra Ahmed, is from a Salafi background, a strict orthodox Sunni sect. She says: “The prophet was sent down to be an example of how we should live our life, to teach us right from wrong. The prophet did not once recognise his birthday, except fasting on the day of the week He was born, i.e. Mondays and Thursday. It is not from the sunnah. If the best of Islam didn’t partake in this event, then why should we

believe Mawlid is from Islam”. This controversy that has been uncontrollable for many years and over the recent course of the debate, what was once a polite discussion, has seen members resort to calling one another derogatory names “pagans” and “deviants” and “kuffars” (disbelievers). But when the Muslim world is in jeopardy, the argument of this issue seems trivial. With the Muslim hate crimes increasing, Western-led wars and oppression, famine in Muslim countries, unemployment, the matter of Mawlid appears

fruitless. People will spend a large chunk of their time vehemently debating parts of Islam that differentiates to their own personal view. In a time where unity is paramount to society, bigger issues need to be addressed. We should perhaps question what the benefits are of such disputes and the consequences. Last year we saw figures from each opposing party, battle it out in a series of videos back and forth on the topic of Mawlid. We at Asian Sunday strongly believe in respecting everyone’s views and practices. Let’s focus on the similarities than the differences and stand together as one!

Do you have fake likes, or fake followers on Instagram? Then you better read this Photo-sharing platform Instagram has announced a new initiative that will target fake likes and comments.

The company say they have developed tools that can identify accounts that use third-party services and apps to artificially boost their popularity. Any accounts violating will be warned and told to change their password. Since its launch in 2010, Instagram has become a tool for online influencers to amass large followings and often, in turn, get paid to market products. Payment for this form of advertising is often scaled by the size of the influencer's online audience and engagements but an online investigation by marketing agency Mediakiz last year showed just how easy it is to become a fake influencer. Some popular apps utilised by users to boost their followings have been recently shut down, but others that pay monthly subscription fees are still available, website Techcrunch reports.

These services often require users to hand over their private log in information, something Instagram warns violates its community guidelines and compromises individual security. The firm says people who continue to use third-party apps to fake activity "may see their Instagram experience impacted". They say the move is "just another step" to

keep. Instagram "a vibrant community where people connect in authentic ways". It is the latest in a string of high-profile moves by social media firms to secure themselves against misinformation, fake users and fraudulent activity.

Instagram was purchased by

Facebook in 2012 for $1bn (ÂŁ760m) in cash and stock, and has continued to grow in popularity recent years having passed a billion users. In September, its founders announced they were leaving the firm after reports of tension between the pair and Facebook.

Everyone has heard the name Nawaab. It's a reputable curry house, which firmly established itself as a leading curry house more than three decades ago. With several branches across the country there is no doubt they have mastered the art of South Asian cuisine. So when the new Nawaab Gourmet opened I was intrigued. Yes Nawaab Gourmet is from the same Nawaab group, but has launched itself as a slightly more cafe style restaurant, serving food with a fusion twist. The building that Nawaab Gourmet occupies is th former Italain restaurant The Ital. A popular eatery which I am sure many like me miss, but does Nawaab Gourmet fill the void? Free spacious car parking is always a good start. As you walk into the restaurant, you are greeting with two images of Bollywood stars. I quite like the mixture of Hollywood and Bollywood style, along with the spacious and airy dining space. The staff are very friendly and we are immediately taken to a table of our choosing. Perhaps when it gets

more busy we may not get that luxury again. Nevertheless, so far so good. Our waiter brings us our menus and asks us if we would like to have anything to drink, while we look through and decide what to order, which in my experience many of Bradford's curry houses miss to ask. I order water and my friend orders a ginger beer.

and a nice charcoal touch. The only downfall was the sides were slightly over cooked, losing the crispiness, but the flavour and taste of the overall chop made up for the over cooked edges.

The only thing I think could have lifted the atmosphere more was if The staff seem to have taken my the restaurant had more criticism well and promised to feed customers. The menu is impressive with some unique dishes just for Nawaab Gourmet diners. The prices are reasonable, but it's all in the taste. I decide to ask the waiter what he would recommend. The waiter seems knowlegeable and takes time to find out what kind of foods I enjoy eating and how I like my curry, before making his recommendation. We order lamb chops for starters and a tawa gosht (meat cooked on a small tawa platter) to share, accompanied by naan and salad. Our starters arrive within 15 minutes of our order, sizzling hot and full of fragrance. The presentation is also commendable

Still it's early days, and I am sure if they maintain the service, and food taste and standards, this place will probably become another popular curry destination.

Is property reducing or is it overpriced?

@AsianSundayNews

@AS TV

finance column

SHABAB GULFRAZ Shabab Gulfraz is our resident Finance expert.

I have seen many articles recently talking about the drop in property prices, and whether it is the right time to pick up a bargain. Britain is seeing a large drop in prices of property across the country. A recent survey on Zoopla showed that 40% of properties marketed across the UK have had a price reduction. This means that the owners are failing to sell the property hence they are reducing the price to get more interest, and hopefully get a sale. It is said the average reduction is circa 8.5% or as an average around ÂŁ26,000 off the asking price. For those of our readers in London the discount is less around 7% which is about ÂŁ65,000off the asking price of a typical property in the south. Now as always estate agents will be saying this is the best time to buy as research shows two fifths of all properties on the market have had prices reduced, as well as fact estate agents want the market to be buoyant otherwise the make no profit at all.

So o are houses cheap or are they overpriced. My view is that the markets are still correcting from the mass property bubble that the government failed tostop between 1998 and 2008. In reality has property gone up in value since 2008? The answer for the majority of the UK is probably a no. The exception being the south which has seen property values increase, but for how long. I have always believed prices in London are too high due to demand, and that demand will continue but the lack of supply of property will push up prices, which can only mean one thing in the future, and that is that most likely a correction will happen at some point in the future. The other issue is people value their property as higher than it might be. This has always been the case, and then when buyer go to buy they make an offer, which might be far less. At the end of the day the price of property is what someone is willing to pay for it, not what

House prices are propped up by debt because the majority of households have mortgage debt secured on properties. It is debt that it used to purpose property for the majority of people. The majority of you will be aware the price of debt is incredibly cheap at the moment. I very much doubt that interest rates will stay as low as they are, and if they increase rapidly to say 4% for an average 5 years fix then in reality will families be able to afford such a large rise. The reality is no, so perhaps if people cannot afford to sell, they might not upsize, which means demand across the property ladder might just not be there to ensure prices continue rising. Overall, my opinion is house prices are too volatile to judge, but my gut instinct is telling me property is still expensive, and will remain around the same level as at present for some years to come before prices across the UK begin to rise.

Programme designed to help Pakistani

husbands for a new life in the UK proves success The University of Bristol and Bradford-based charity QED have joined forces to uncover the challenges faced by Pakistani men migrating to the UK. In the UK, South Asian groups have been the particular focus when concerned with marriage-related migration. Now new research shows that Pakistani men face many tough challenges that make their experience in Britain difficult. The University of Bristol and QED Foundation delivered a pre-departure training programme aimed at preparing husbands for a new life in the UK. Two groups of men were also interviewed to hear about the experiences of those who had been settled for up to four years or for more than a decade. One in five partners or spouses granted clearance to enter the UK in 2016 was from Pakistan. “The men we spoke to before leaving didn't seem very worried about encountering challenges when they moved to the UK,” says University of Bristol reader in sociology Dr Katharine Charsley.

“So it comes as a real shock to many new arrivals when they find themselves trapped in low-paid, dead-end jobs, working long and often anti-social hours to help to support their families in the UK, whilst also hoping to send remittances to aging parents or younger siblings left behind in Pakistan.” Their research suggested that time and money were two main factors required for the husbands to gain the training and language skills needed to find better jobs. These were often lacking and limited their ability to develop new social networks. The expectation of following the same career path that they had in Pakistan was common among some men that were interviewed. However, the only opportunities open to them consisted of dishwashing, warehousing, catering and factory work. The reporter further shows that the men in the family are no longer the main breadwinner because their wives earned more. This created loss of self-esteem and disappointment.

Another common theme was newly husbands were often dependent on their in-laws to find them jobs within the family and offer accommodation, so could end up at the bottom of the family pecking order. The QED Foundation delivered two five-week pre-departure courses which involved English and employment improvement, which helped up to 24 men. The training also entailed practical skills such as shopping, banking and the use of public transport and health services. British heritage, society and culture, education, housing and law and order were also part of the programme. This aims to support them to develop a community and social life. “QED Foundation pioneered the development of similar courses for women coming to join their husbands in the UK so we know that it's a winning formula,” says project manager Adeeba Malik CBE. “Other EU countries have since adopted predeparture training and there has recently been growing recognition of the needs of Pakistani migrant wives. “But so far, the plight of husbands coming to the UK has been overlooked, with the result that

many people find it impossible to make the most of their existing skills and qualifications and break out of a vicious circle of low pay, hard work and long hours.” Recently, the issue of marriage-related migration has been gaining increasing political importance across Europe, with considerable tightening of spousal immigration regulations in countries such as Denmark and the Netherlands. Recent government reports including the Casey Review and the Integrated Communities Strategy White Paper have expressed concern about how migrants can be supported to settle in to their new lives but so far most of the research has directly focused on women rather than men.

Defamation or Malicious Falsehood? If someone makes a false statement about an individual, firm or a company then that statement could either be defamatory or a malicious falsehood which could lead to the injured party bringing a claim for damages or seeking an injunction against the wrong doer. But what is the difference between defamation and malicious falsehood? Defamation A statement is defamatory if it tends to lower a person in the estimation of right-thinking members of society generally. If the statement is in a permanent form such as written words, pictures, television broadcast or on the internet then it is libel. If it is spoken then it is slander. Cole therefore applied to the Court to join the director as a second Claimant and to enforce the Costs Order against him. For a statement to be defamatory it must be published to a third party, contain defamatory words or actions and must reasonably be understood to refer directly or indirectly to the claimant. The claimant does not have to prove that the statement is false but he does have to prove that the words are defamatory of him. If a statement is defamatory, it is assumed that it is false until proved otherwise. The claimant does not have to prove intent so he can sue even if the publication was a mistake. The claimant also does not need to prove any damage but he only needs to show that the statement defamed him. There are a number of defences to any claim for defamation. These includes: • Justification or truth – if the maker of the statement can prove that the statement was true then this is an absolute defence to any claim for defamation.

•Fair comment – it is a defence to a defamation claim if the defendant is able to show that the words complained of were comment on a matter of public interest. •Privilege – there are instances where public interest requires an ability to speak fully and freely about matters without raising the risk of a claim for defamation; in those situations the statements are treated as being privileged. Malicious Falsehood The law of malicious falsehood aims to protect economic interests. Malicious falsehood claims are sometimes brought as an alternative to defamation claims. Although both malicious falsehood and defamation claims deal with the publication of false statements the main difference between the two is that a claimant in a malicious falsehood claim is not required to prove damage to reputation. A claim for malicious falsehood may be brought against a defendant who maliciously publishes a false statement

which identifies the claimant, his business, property or economic interests and can be shown to have caused the claimant financial loss. A typical situation in which a claim for malicious falsehood arises is where one competitor makes an untrue statement about another’s goods or services which is calculated to cause financial loss. In a claim for malicious falsehood, the claimant needs to demonstrate that the defendant intended to publish statements complained of and did so with improper motive or malice. In a malicious falsehood claim it is up to the claimant to prove that the statements complained of were untrue, unlike defamation claims where falsity is assumed and the burden falls on the defendant to prove that the statements are true. Further, the claimant must demonstrate that the statement has caused actual financial loss. If you are involved in any claim for either defamation or malicious falsehood then Blacks Solicitors have specialist lawyers who can assist. Please contact Luke Patel

Lord Lieutenant visits Bradford for opening of Sports Ground

The residents of Greenmoor community were greatly overwhelmed when Her Majesty the Queen’s representatives for West Yorkshire, Lord Lieutenant Ed Anderson and Deputy Lord Lieutenant Zulfiqar Karim attended Khidmat Centre for the opening of Greenmoor Sports Ground.

The event, which was held by Greenmoor Big Local, celebrated the launch of their new sports ground on Spencer Road. This comes after lottery funded company, Big Local, joined forces with Greenmoor community to create recreational facilities for children and young people in the area. Following the allocation of a million pounds, Lidget Green and Scholemoor in Bradford decided to make the area a better place to live. This is part of a pioneering Big Lottery Fund scheme to put decision-making power in the hands of local people. The project is called ‘GreenMoor’, taking part of the name from both areas. Lord Lieutenant Ed Anderson said: “It’s lovely to come here today. It is so heartwarming to see all of the children playing football. So I just like to commend everybody who has been associated with this project and other projects alongside it. It’s a wonderful example of collaboration, community initiative and with

some funding as well. It’s avery proud day for me to come to Bradford and see the end results”.

The Greenmoor Big Local Initiative has been running successfully since 2012 with a number of projects to show for it. From capital projects such as the Spencer Fields lighting project and Multi Use Games Areas to service delivery projects such as Well Being cafes for the elderly, Yoga sessions and ‘Pathways to Work’ where help was provided to those searching for employment. After consultation with the local community, Greenmoor Community Partnership Board recognised the demand for safe play space for children in the area. The construction received £156,000 of funding via Greenmoor Big Local and a number of schools, such as Horton Grange, Farnham Primary worked alongside Greenmoor Big local to discuss what form the l recreational facilities should take in 2016. Khidmat Centre, CNet and the Spencer Park Residents all contributed towards the development of the project. Saira Ali, Team leader Landscape Design and Conservation told the Asian

Sunday:“I worked with the community to get a project together and to find out what the requirements were. Initially we looked at the design work and costing, and worked alongside funding applications to be able to deliver this project. “The response was amazing from the residents. They came together and worked together with us, guiding us, trusting us. Also, the end produce was helped designed by them right down to the colour. It was a project for the community. They knew better than anybody what their needs were”. The idea for a Multi-Use Games Area (muga)

along with the soft ball cricket nets was developed by the Safer Stronger task group for the Sports Ground, which will be accessible around-theclock. Bradford Council’s Landscape, Design & Conservation team drew up the designs and managed the construction project. The Greenmoor Sports Ground is located at Spencer Fields, at the heart of the Scholemoor and Lidget Green community and its 4000 residents. The fields were originally part of the estate of a grand Victorian house called Horton Grange, before becoming playing fields with traditional play equipment and were also used for football and cricket.

ECB and ICC Cricket World Cup 2019 aim to take cricket to 1 million children The ECB and ICC announced their strategic plan to use the ICC Cricket World Cup 2019 to boost cricket participation and help drive the long-term growth of the game in England and Wales.

It will use the iconic global sporting event the biggest prize in world cricket - to inspire and engage 1 million young people, aged between 5 and 12, in the next year. A core pillar of this plan is the Cricket World Cup Schools Programme which launched recently and will aim to engage over 700,000 school children across England and Wales in conjunction with Chance to Shine. The launch event was held at Lord's Cricket Ground - host venue for the ICC Cricket World Cup Final on 14 July 2019 – where current England players David Willey and Heather Knight joined former cricketers Isa Guha and Graeme Swann along with local school children from St. Edwards Primary School.

framework of Cricket Unleashed and supporting the South Asian Action Plan launched earlier this year, the strategy has four key aims to drive growth throughout the game:

in cricket through the ICC Cricket World Cup encourage as many schools as possible to be part of the programme and provide this by tailored marketing, in-stadium unique opportunity to their pupils." experiences and out-of-venue activities

1.Creating stronger, diverse, familyfriendly clubs: A World Cup Small Grants Scheme will see £1,000 grants made available for 3,000 recreational cricket clubs and 3,000 clubs will throw open their doors for special Cricket World Cup events

"Having the ICC Cricket World Cup played here in England and Wales gives us a oncein-a-generation opportunity. We must turn the excitement of a World Cup on home soil into a guaranteed route to draw more players and volunteers to recreational cricket. Cricket can inspire its next generation of fans and players by taking the tournament into clubs, playgrounds and classrooms across England and Wales and we will be working hard together to make the most of this moment."

2.Expanding the reach, relevance and scale of cricket within 8,000 Primary Schools: A World Cup Schools Programme - developed in conjunction with Chance to Shine – to bring cricket to the playground and classroom. It will engage up to 15,000 teachers through the Cricket World Cup teachers' portal and offer World Cup Kwik Cricket competitions in schools.

Together, they took part in a classroom session, using cricket as an educational tool; one key element of the World Cup Schools Programme where teachers can sign up to an online portal, full lesson ideas that take cricket into the classroom.

3.Expanding the accessibility of All Stars Cricket: The ECB's flagship entry-level scheme for 5-8-year-olds will benefit from a ICC Cricket World Cup take-over to further extend the reach of the programme. This will be coupled with a commitment to drive the growth of All Stars Cricket in inner-city areas in conjunction with the South Asian Action Plan.

The strategy builds on the wider ECB

4.Attract New Fans: Engaging families

ECB Chief Executive Tom Harrison said:

ICC Managing Director ICC Cricket World Cup 2019 Steve Elworthy, added: "The ICC Cricket World Cup arrives back to England and Wales for the first time in 20 years and now is the time to seize this priceless opportunity and use the tournament as a platform for growth to create a new generation of fans and players. Through our dedicated Schools Programme, we are excited to take cricket into the classrooms across England and Wales as well as giving young people the unique chance to be part of sporting history. I know how important education through sport can be and we want to

Ambassador for the Cricket World Cup 2019 Schools Programme, Graeme Swann said: "I am delighted to be part of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2019 Schools Programme and play a part in inspiring a new generation of fans and players through this great tournament. "Hosting a World Cup here in England and Wales presents a unique opportunity to use the impact of the tournament to grow the game at grass root level and give schools the opportunity to be part of the special atmosphere a World Cup brings. "I played in the 2011 World Cup and it is the biggest stage in cricket with the world's eyes on you - and now as a fan I find myself excited by what the Cricket World Cup promises deliver for the sport next year." Minister for Sport and Civil Society Tracey Crouch MP said: "Cricket World Cup 2019 will be the biggest cricket tournament to date; showcasing the best of England and Wales on the global stage. By attracting thousands of visitors to our shores and inspiring the next generation of cricket superstars to pick up a bat and ball, I am confident we will have a cricket legacy for the nation to be proud of."

Virat Kohli Becomes Fastest Batsman After 10,000 runs in ODI Cricket Virat Kohli has become the fastest player to reach 10,000 runs in One Day International (ODI) cricket. He reached the milestone in his 205th ODI.

The popular cricketer completed this amazing feat against the West Indies in Vishakpatnam on October 24, 2018. Kohli beat the record insanely by 54 innings, previously held by Sachin Tendulkar. While Sachin got to 10,000 runs in his 259th ODI, Virat reached the same in his 205th match. Kohli breached the mark set by Tendulkar in the 37th over, hitting a simple tip to long-on for a single off Ashley Nurse. Seventeen years ago, Sachin became the first batsman to make 10,000 runs in ODI cricket. Tendulkar hit leg-spinner Shane Warne through the covers in an ODI match against Australia to make history. This came during the 3rd ODI of Australia’s tour to India. The game took place at the Holkar Cricket Stadium in Indore on March 31, 2011. With Virat overtaking the master blaster, Sachin went on Twitter to congratulate the Indian captain: “The intensity and consistency

with which you bat is just amazing. @imVkohli, congratulations on achieving 10,000 runs in ODIs. Keep the runs flowing.” Sachin was not alone in praising the Delhi born batsman.

Fans and experts from the cricket world posted their thoughts on social media using Twitter handles such as #KingKohli.

innings. He smashed thirteen 4s and four 6s as India scored a mammoth 321-6 in their 50 overs. This was the 35th century made by Kohli in ODIs.

“It’s just incredible that he can be so consistent with the way he scores a hundred. He has a pattern to how he scores his runs.

The most amazing aspect to his game is the consistency. Only cricket greats have performed game after game. Having seen a lot of cricket both as a player and coach, former West Indian opener Phil Simmons speaking about Virat said:

“The thing that excites me the most is how he adjusts from the wicket 2-3 days ago. It just shows his attitude.” But the amazing Kohi is a human after all. Towards the end of his innings, he was suffering from fatigue.

Despite ten other cricketers reaching the landmark before him, Kohli is the fastest out of all them. This proves what a force Virat, the “run machine” is in ODI cricket. This is a monumental achievement by Kohli if we take into account all the previous generations who have played the sport. Former Indian pacer Ajit Agarkar was all praise for Virat saying: “It is 54 less innings than the best player who got there. It is phenomenal.” Even though the pitch at Vishakpatnam had a bit of juice for the bowlers it made no difference to Kohli. He came out in the middle as he always does before exploding in the end. Virat made an unbeaten 157 off 129 balls in his record-breaking

Harry Kane sets sights on Wayne Rooney's England goal-scoring record Harry Kane believes he can break Wayne Rooney's England goal-scoring record and is ready to end his barren international run in the familiar surroundings of Wembley on Sunday. The Three Lions captain has not scored for his country in his last seven appearances but still managed to collect the Golden Boot as England made it to the World Cup semifinals in the summer. Rooney bid farewell to international football in the 3-0 friendly win against the United States, earlier this month ending his record-breaking England career with 53 goals from his 120 caps. Kane, 25, has amassed 19 goals so far and will be looking to get back on the scoresheet in England's winner-takes-all Nations League clash with Croatia. He has already been backed by Rooney to one day eclipse his own achievements and now the Tottenham forward has admitted

it is something he is targeting in the longterm. "It is definitely possible," Kane said when asked about breaking Rooney's feat. "It is still a fair bit away. I don't like to set my targets that far ahead in the future because a lot can happen. "We will see over the years how many goals I have got. Hopefully I will still be fit and healthy and getting selected by the manager. It is achievable but not something I'm thinking about too much right now." Kane has become accustomed to playing big games at Wembley, with his Tottenham side using the national stadium as their home while delays on their new ground continue. He feels playing Champions League football there, alongside England colleagues Harry Winks, Eric Dier and Dele Alli, can only help heading into the game against Croatia.

Kell Brook and Amir Khan

SPORTS

to fight in 2019?

AMIR KHAN and Kell Brook could agree a deal to fight each other before Brook’s bout on December 8, Eddie Hearn has revealed. Protracted negotiations between the pair led to Brook agreeing to another fight on before a potential match-up. His opponent has not yet been announced, but the fight will happen at super welterweight and will headline a Sheffield Arena card.

“With Kell, when you’re talking about 147lbs, Kell needs a 15/16-week training camp to make that weight. “So this fight is almost like an extended training camp to have the fight, sharpen the tools, and then stay in camp to make 147lbs. “Kell’s biggest downfall has always been

the life he leads outside of camp. Stuffs his face, next thing he’s 13st and he’s got to work to get that weight down.”

“But there’s gonna be things in this fight that Kell’s gonna have to do to get the fight. But that’s up to him.

When asked whether Brook would take the fight with a rehydration clause, Hearn replied: “I’m not sure. I think right now I’d have to say no.

“I don’t think the public would forgive either guy if the fight didn’t happen. So it’s important for their legacies that it gets over the line.”

Hearn promotes both Khan and Brook and is keen to make the huge domestic bout, which is likely to occur in March 2019. The naturally-smaller Khan wants it so that both men weigh up to 147lbs the day before the fight but can’t weigh more than 157lbs on the night. It is common practice under IBF regulations, which Brook abided by during his 33-month reign as welterweight world champion. But as the fight would be a domestic bout there is no obligation for Brook to agree to the term. “I think Amir wants this rehydration clause in, which could cause some problems,” Hearn continued. “But for Kell right now he’s boxing December and that’s the focus. “Hopefully, by the time that fight takes place we may even have the Khan fight done. “That’s the aim, we want Brook-Khan, and hopefully we can get it over the line for spring.
