Amira London, relocates from Bradford to Batley Despite success in Bradford, owners of modest fashion store Amira London have decided to move their business to Batley. Owner Zubair Khan feels his market and clientele is more suited for the demographic in Batley. Mr Khan has been selling abayas, hijabs and ‘burkinis’ for more than three years in Bradford. He has since relocated his store to Batley’s upcoming Commercial Street, where he feels he has a better connect with the audiences. “I feel most of my customers are based in Batley/Dewsbury and so when I knew Batley Plaza was opening and there were vacant units, I immediately took the opportunity. “Since opening, we have had such a welcoming response and it’s been great to be in the heart of Batley. “We will continue to offer the same exceptional service that our customers were used to in Bradford, and along with our Abayas, exclusive designs and selection of workwear of blouses and shirts designed by exclusive designers” Rails are packed to capacity at the store and customers seem to be enjoying their shopping experience. Take a visit and see for yourself the fabulous and eye-catching abayas, sitting alongside simpler day-to-day robes for wearing around the house and for those who enjoy a bit of extravagance then there is plenty for you too, with the designer patterning, intricate embroidery and stretch jersey sleeves for special events.

Caught on Camera: Businessmen Guilty of Fly-tipping in Dewsbury Two company directors have been prosecuted by Kirklees Council after waste from their business was flytipped. Directors of Louis Conrad Ltd ,Mr Rizwan Abed (35) of St Mary’s Avenue, Batley and Mr Altaf Ravat (36) of Cobden Close, Batley, pleaded guilty to five offences of losing control of business waste which was later found fly-tipped. CCTV footage showed how bedding waste was being dumped in huge loads from a van. Ravat admitted paying £250 in cash to two men whom he identified as being from a company called wetakeanywaste.com – this was discovered not to be true after the Waste Transfer Notice he provided was found to be forged. The people who actually dumped the waste have not been identified. Abed was sentenced on 28 August, and was fined £450 consecutive for each offence, making a total fine of £2,250. He was also ordered to pay costs of £1,000, compensation of £755 and

a victim surcharge of £45 totalling £4,050. Ravat was sentenced on the same date and was subsequently fined £481 consecutive for each offence, making a total fine of £2405. He was also ordered to pay costs of £1,000, compensation of £755 and a victim surcharge of £48 totalling £4,208. Councillor Naheed Mather, Cabinet Member for Greener Kirklees, said: “We are very happy with the results of this court case, it supports our zero-tolerance stance to such selfish behaviour. “It’s completely unacceptable to dump rubbish in Kirklees and those caught will pay the price. It’s also important that people realise that if they pay for someone else to dispose of their rubbish illegally, they will be prosecuted. “Flytipping ruins the appearance of our wonderful communities and poses an environmental risk, costing the taxpayer every time we have to clear it up. Businesses must comply with their legal responsibility and their duty of care to dispose of waste correctly.”

A former care assistant has been jailed for 20 months after punching a Muslim woman and pulling off her hijab in a racially aggravated assault in Bradford’s Kirkgate Market.

illness but said that she had suffered serious emotional trauma and struggling with issues of substance misuse and aggression following an abusive relationship.

Bradford Crown Court heard how Ellie Burns attacked two female shoppers on April 29 after they complained that a song she was singing was racist.

Her barrister, said that Burns had conducted herself well in her role as a care assistant, dealing capably with very challenging situations.

Burns spat at the first victim and pulled her hair, as well as punching her and pulling off her hijab She then slapped and pushed over the second woman.

“When sober and calm, she is insightful and thoughtful; when she is intoxicated, it is another story,” Miss Morland told the court.

Prosecutor Giles Bridge told Bradford Crown Court both women were left deeply distressed by the incident. Burns then assaulted a police officer called to the scene by scratching and nipping him. Burns, of Roundwood Glen, Ravenscliffe. The attack, on 29 April, happened just 25 days after she had received a suspended prison sentence for vodka and cocaine-fuelled attacks on a taxi driver and five police officers. In that earlier incident, she had hurled racist abuse at the driver and punched him in the face before assaulting five arresting officers. On April 4, she was sentenced to 15 months imprisonment, suspended for 18 months, for a racially aggravated assault on a taxi driver, racially aggravated harassment, theft and assaulting five police officers, in April and January last year. When the police arrived, she struggled during arrest causing a cut to an officer’s finger. Back at the station, the officer was kicked and spat at, and Burns threatened to bite his nose. Three months earlier, Burns stole a packet of cigarettes from a petrol station in Killinghall Road, Bradford. When the police arrived to arrest her, she pulled over a sweet display, smashed a bottle and kicked an officer. Days later, she elbowed an officer in the chest, attempted to headbutt another and spat in one’s face. In July this year, Burns was remanded in custody and probation and psychiatric reports were prepared. Camille Morland, Burns’ barrister, said she was not suffering from a mental

The Recorder of Bradford, Judge Jonathan Durham Hall QC, told Burns: “Life hasn’t been at all easy for you.” But she had breached the suspended sentence order “conclusively, in a very effective way.” “How can I overlook a flagrant breach of a suspended sentence?” Judge Durham Hall asked. He activated ten months of the suspended sentence and jailed Burns for a total of ten months for the new offences, the sentences to run consecutively.

Locals Raise Funds for Charity Whilst Trekking & Exploring The Breathtaking Sights in Pakistan

A team of 26 trekkers from Bradford and across the U.K. took the challenge of a lifetime by hiking to the base of “killer mountain”, Nanga Parbat, in Pakistan. The brave team also hiked to Rush Lake; the highest alpine lake in Pakistan and Rush Peak, a mountain in the Karakoram range, nestled at an altitude of 5,098m.

people are second to none.

The adventurous team comprised of men and women from as young as age 14 to age 72. Their mission was simple – to raise funds and awareness for Imran Khan Cancer Appeal.

Halima Nawaz from Leeds who was on the trek too, said: “This trek was a challenge for all of us, we were camping in the wilderness, with the night beside Rush Lake being the coldest but with all the challenges of the mountains, glacier walking and contending with the harsh elements, we reminded ourselves of our purpose every morning in our daily prayers; that we are here by choice and that we are blessed with health.

Ikhlaq Ahmed, Manager of the U.K. registered charity, Imran Khan Cancer Appeal told Asian Sunday: “We are really pleased to have been able to complete the challenge in Pakistan this year. Not only is this year the 25th anniversary of the Lahore facility opening, but also trekking in Pakistan for such a worthwhile cause whilst exploring and showcasing the beauty of this resilient and naturally well-endowed country was another purpose of the challenge. “We wanted the world to see that Pakistan is a place where charity thrives and meets in literally breathtaking locations. We want the world to see that Pakistan is a land that is rich in natural beauty and the generosity and hospitality of its

We look forward to arranging more trips for overseas Pakistanis in the years to come and hope that our inaugural challenge in Pakistan will be a source of inspiration for many more supporters to come forward and join us on future treks.”

None of our struggles compare to those who need cancer treatment but cannot afford it. Shaukat Khanum has existed for 25 years and we pray that it stands serving the Pakistani community for many many more years to come. As a British born Pakistani, I am so proud to have my roots in a country that has someone as inspiring as Imran Khan as its leader - someone who has devoted his entire life to public service. Politics aside; we all need to do our

part in supporting the philanthropic path he has paved for us. As a nation, we are only as strong as our weakest link. We must uplift and support those in need and the Shaukat Khanum hospitals are a source of hope for the weak. I hope that more and more people become advocates of this cause and raise awareness and much needed funds to ensure its longevity.” Last year, the Imran Khan Cancer Appeal undertook their first overseas challenge to Everest Base Camp (EBC) and the team raised a sum in excess of £60,000 with a further £61,000 raised by husband and wife Nasreen and Sajjad Khan from Leicester who returned from the EBC challenge to organise a spectacular fundraising event for the charity. Fundraising efforts have continued this year, with individuals organising family and friend’s picnics. One Bradford woman, Aliya Darr, managed to raise more than £13000 by baking a staggering 2,000 cupcakes during the month of Ramadan. “Such sums go a long way” said Ikhlaq. “They help pay for the treatment of cancer patients at the Shaukat Khanum cancer hospitals and we are optimistic that this larger group, having visited the hospital for

themselves, will go on to be lifetime ambassadors of the charitable cause and raise more funds for the cancer hospital in the weeks and months to come.” The Imran Khan Cancer Appeal want to do more to help raise funds for the

cause and have plenty planned for 2020. If you are interested in outdoor treks and challenges or have an idea on fundraising for the cancer hospital, The Imran Khan Cancer Appeal would like you to get in touch at info@ikca.org.uk.

Supporting Refugees in More Than Six Countries

By FATIMA PATEL BY ANISAH ARIF

editor@asiansunday.co.uk anisah@asiansunday.co.uk As a media person, we often work odd hours finishing off stories or picking up on new news stories as they break. So, while up late one night (it was past 1am in the morning) researching on an article, casually browsing LinkedIn, I noticed a new connection Noushin Raja was also online. “It’s passed 1am what are you doing up so late?” I questioned her from my keyboard. “You would share my pain. These projects don’t just

happen we never stop” came back the reply. Noushin Raja is the founder and CEO of international charity Moonlight Trust, which was founded following the tragic death of her brother Amaar Raja, lovingly called Moon. I had bumped into Noushin on a number of occasions and good old social media kept me up to date about her fundraisers for her charitable organisation, but with so many other charities, constantly trying to grab my attention (not to mention my heavy workload) I never really got the chance to learn more about Noushin and the work she does for Moonlight Trust. But her late-night reply got me intrigued and wanting to learn more about these projects. Noushin is a Pakistani British Muslim, who at an early age was sent to a boarding school in Pakistan so she could learn Urdu. Upon completing her GCSE’s Noushin returned to the UK to develop her passion and career in IT. Having secured herself with a master’s in computing Noushin managed to get the job of a lifetime. “I got the job I wanted.” She told me over a cup of coffee. “The job was funded and was as part of a talent hunt from thirty thousand applications of which only 12 graduate

students were chosen, so I was on top of the world when I got selected. “Sadly, though my world came crashing down as my brother who was aged 17 years then, got robbed and murdered by a bunch of drunken youth. I had everything for my future, but life took a different turn.” She said. Despite coming from a fairly well to do family, where her mother was a politician in Pakistan and ties to the Zardari and Bhutto family, Noushin hasn’t always had it easy. Everything seemed fine until tragedy struck and Noushin’s direction of becoming a successful IT professional quickly maneuvered to helping the less fortunate across the globe. “Prior to my brother dying I still always wanted to help people, I saw a lot of poverty in Pakistan and always thought to myself I want to help people in need after I graduate. “I just didn’t think I would do it so soon, my brother’s death deeply impacted on me and I even went for Islamic counselling.” The computing graduate said. “He had 42 injuries it was the worst thing that could happen to any sister. I had to go to hospital to identify his body, then court trial. We had to sit there for 30 days listening to them discussing every wound of his. So, it was horrifying and then it was in the papers, so I lost my identity. If I went to the corner shop people would say, ‘Oh, this is the girl whose brother got murdered.’ So, in so many ways life just changed.

“My Islamic counsellor had said to me there are two things you can do for him. You can either pray for him, or you can help other people in his memory by doing a charity. So, then I realized that setting up a charity was something I always wanted to do, never imagined it would be under these circumstances, but nonetheless – Moonlight Trust was born. The charity initially started by helping the homeless in Leeds, Batley and Dewsbury. Noushin’s mum had a small NGO in Pakistan, she was in politics, through her Noushin got to know women and started supporting them. “I remember one woman coming in and saying that her husband had cut her nose, she had gone back to her

parents and they had said to her, we are so poor we can’t look after you so go back to your husband. So, I started to then support women and families like that and now today the charity is supporting refugees in six different countries. That certainly wasn’t the plan. Further opportunities came when the University she worked for asked her to join them as a peace diplomat in Palestine. While in Palestine Noushin met a freelance journalist called Daniel Adamson, who she credits for her firsthand experience of on the groundwork in conflict areas. “Through Dan I learnt so much on the ground and met many inspirational people and this is more or less how

Moonlight Trust officially formed.” Noushin’s anamnesis of the very first project Moonlight Trust funded is still very clear. Noushin said: “It was a Christian lady called Amal, who we helped. “She was living in a cave, because her house had been demolished her electricity had been cut, her water had been blocked and her road had been blocked. She was a physiotherapist in Bethlehem, and it took her two hours to travel there. But she was the last

woman in the 21st century living in a cave. Because the project was about non-violence resistance she really related with our project. She had a board outside saying: Refuse to be enemies and all these other good beautiful messages written on stones. She was also running a summer camp for the children, whose parents had died and who were suffering from war trauma. She was inviting groups like ours and artists musicians etc, to support her work. She got her water from rainwater. Amal means hope in Arabic and she says you never give up hope. She was the last woman standing on the mountain, they had come t o

scare her with dogs and threatened her, cut off 9 of her olive trees. She wouldn’t leave, because once she left that space would become occupied by settlers. In her words she said I am not protecting my house I am protecting Palestine. So, we crossed the border and spoke to Jewish people and told them their stories and one group even went there, so these are the kind of projects Dan was working on and ones that Moonlight Trust funded. I didn’t seek publicity from this, as it was just something I had to do, but of course to sustain things I realise you have to share what you are doing and so people can hear about it and can perhaps get involved and support.” Noushin counts herself very lucky that she had coaches and mentors. The quality of those projects and how cost effective they were. Their resilience, their compassion really changed Noushin: “I used to be very bitter when my brother died. I was like he did not hurt a fly, why did he have to die? Why did God take him? Why did you have to torture? So, when I met these people, they had lost so much but were always grateful to the Almighty.” When news came in of Aylan Kurdi being swept ashore Noushin was even more determined to make a difference. “I was very close and connected to refugees” She said. “They were landing on European shores and people in my office started saying we need to do something and so I launched a campaign we raised significant

amount of money and with the help of my University professionals we then started working and supporting in Greece.” She continued “We now fund boat rescue missions. I literally took babies out with my own hands and I remember a charity called Doctors without Borders, who were short of volunteers, so we ended up helping out. Our brief was when you take people out of the boats, make sure they are your size, don’t take an adult, take a baby, because you might drop them if they are unconscious and they will drown. Look into their eyes if they can’t make eye contact with you run and get the medics and change their socks and trousers, two people died from hypothermia that week. So, I mentally prepared myself, when the first boat arrived, I could hear screams at 12 midnight, and I started panicking and so I asked this Spanish doctor what is going on. He said is this your first boat. He said this is normal, because they put children in the middle and because these are dinghy boats 60

people stand around, so they fall on top of the children, the space is just for 30 people. I took a Syrian mother out and she had three children and she couldn’t recognise her own children, she was in such a state of shock. I then put her children down and they couldn’t make eye contact with me and I had never prayed so hard that night. The medic attending to them told me not to worry they are alive, they are drowsy the smugglers have given them drugs, which you’re not supposed to give to children and that’s made them like this, to stop them from screaming. So, they will be fine after 24 hours. So, these are just some of the scenes I have witnessed.” Noushins horrific experiences of relief work were never ending and this gave more rise for the need for her charity Moonlight Trust to continue raising funds and doing the incredible work they are doing. Batley & Spen MP Blasts ‘reckless’ Government Over Food Poverty Bill

Tracy Brabin MP has spoken of her frustration with the Conservative Government’s decision to suspend parliament. The suspension means that not only will MPs be unable to represent their constituents but also that important upcoming business in the House of Commons has also disappeared. For Ms Brabin, this means that she will no longer be able to fulfil her commitment to introduce a Bill to parliament that would outlaw food poverty, entitled the Right to Food Bill. Food poverty is an issue close to the MP’s heart as she has seen the devastating affects it has on local people through her constituency surgery and hears continued warnings about the growing problem from teachers and health care professionals. Commenting, Tracy Brabin MP said, “With all of the uncertainty around Brexit is absolutely reckless of the Conservative Government to suspend parliament at this time, however it is not the only issue facing the country. My surgeries are regularly attended by people who are unable to feed their families and the sad truth is that the problem of food poverty is rising. That is why I was intending to introduce the Right to Food bill,

which would create legislation that would bring an end to this scourge on our communities.” “Batley Food Bank and other food banks across the country do excellent work in helping those in need. From my visits there, I know that Batley Food Bank helping over 150 people per week. But with a crisis of this scale, we need the Government to take action. A Right to Food bill would’ve forced the Government to take notice and act to tackle food poverty.” The Batley Food Bank based on Brunswick Street, collects food from the public and redistributes it to families in need, hoping to provide enough food for the whole family for three meals a day for a week. However, despite supermarket collections and generous donations from local groups, businesses and residents, the team at the food bank say they are so busy they have run out of supplies. According to figures there are now around 2,000 food banks across the UK, with the Trussell Trust accounting for about 1,200 of them. The number of supplies being distributed has risen by 73 per cent over the past five years.

Fans in a Frenzy as World Heavyweight Champion Visits New Restaurant in Batley

Fans went into a frenzy as world heavyweight boxing champion, Deontay Wilder landed in Batley.

Wilder responded on his Instagram by writing: “#Manchester/ #Batley is lit right now.

It’s amazing to see so many businesses choosing Batley to be their home, and for us to welcome a world class athlete.”

The boxing champ who goes by the nicknames the Bronze Bomber and the Alabama Slammer came to open the second branch of Bradford’s popular eatery Mr T’s on Bradford Road, in Batley.

“Thanks to all my UK fan for the continuous love you give. What an amazing time every damn time from start literally to finish you guys don’t stop.”

Wilder also paid a visit to Bradford, where he was pampered by the award winning Prity’s for a facial before heading to Mr T’s.

Also present were Kirklees Council Leader Shabir Pandor and Batley and Spen MP Tracy Brabin.

The facial has now become popular with Wilder endorsing it on his Instagram.

While getting mobbed by fans the Wilder managed to enjoy some food, which included having a milkshake named after him and interact with media.

Cllr Pandor wrote on his social media: “He’s a knockout! Great to meet the @WBCBoxing champ of the world, Deontay Wilder @BronzeBomber at the opening of Mr T’s in #Batley. DW is a big man with a big heart. His ambition matches that of the owners of yet another new enterprise in my hometown. “

Wilder wrote: “I just got a Wilder facial, it was terrific, you’ve got to come in and get it.

Owner of the restaurant chain, Tauseef Malik told Asian Sunday: “It’s been a great pleasure having Deontay Wilder come and open our second branch. I am glad he enjoyed his experience and am grateful to all the fans who turned up to see him.

MP Tracy Brabin also welcomed the visit and wrote: “Had an amazing time at the grand opening of Mr T’s restaurant in Batley, with special guest and heavyweight boxing champion of the world Deontay Wilder.

As of May 2019, Wilder, 33, was ranked as the world’s secondbest active heavyweight by BoxRec, and third by the Transnational Boxing Rankings Board and The Ring magazine.

The restaurant chain is no stranger to boxing stars, as they have already had Tyson Fury and Floyd Mayweather visit their Bradford branch.

“If you want your face to feel refreshed, then Prity salon is the place.”

John Abraham to shoot his upcoming biker film at Isle Of Man TT circuit

Following a healthy stint at the box office with his recent spate of patriotic films, actor John Abraham is all set to don the helmet once again in his upcoming yet-to-be-titled biker film. John will star and co-produce the movie as well. The actor had announced the film in March this year. If reports are true the actor has secured permission to shoot parts of the film at the Isle of Man TT circuit. The 60.72 km racing circuit is one of the fastest and deadliest in the world, with average speeds far over the modern MotoGP racing. The roads are closed to the public during any racing event and a crash while racing usually means hitting a house, a stone wall, or a tree.

The film will be helmed by Rensil D’Silva, who has previously made films like ‘Kurbaan’ and ‘Ungli’. John said that the film has been in development for a couple of years, so it has been a wellthought-out plan as to how the makers wanted to proceed with it. The actor further added that he has seen many races on the Isle Of Man and the team has done the recce. The Dhoom actor further revealed that he met the Minister for Enterprise Laurence Skelly and he granted the permission for the team to shoot the film. The film will start rolling in April next year. The actor reveals that the shoot of the film is scheduled in such a way that they can film the live Isle Of Man Tourist Trophy and the Southern 100 that takes place every summer.

Kriti Sanon: Glad to be part of female-centric film ‘Mimi’ Actress Kriti Sanon is happy to be part of “Mimi” where she plays a young surrogate mother, which will also be her first woman-centric film. Directed by ‘Luka Chuppi’ fame Laxman Utekar, Kriti considers the project a huge responsibility. “I am quite nervous. But nervousness is what is so exciting. The fact that I haven’t done something like this before, the fact that it’s so away from me and it’s got emotions I have never experienced, is what is challenging.

According to Kriti, ‘Mimi’ has its heart in the right place. “It makes you smile, laugh, weep, feel good, everything,” she added. “Laxman sir has a knack of understanding emotions and presenting it in an entertaining manner with a lot of situational humour and characters that you take back home.” ‘Mimi’ also features actor Pankaj Tripathi.

Will Salman push ‘Dabangg 3’ to Eid 2020? If sources in the Salman Khan camp are to be believed, the superstar is now seriously thinking of postponing his home production “Dabangg 3” to Eid 2020. The film is all set for a December 20, 2019 release as of now. With “Kick 2” producer-director Sajid Nadiadwala openly denying reports that his film will be ready for release on Eid next year, choices have gradually narrowed down for Salman when it comes to delivering fans the cinematic Eid treat he recently promised in a tweet. “It is a serious thought, and one which

‘Dabangg 3’ director Prabhudheva has been asked to consider,” said the source. For those who came in late, Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s “Inshallah”, starring Salman with Alia Bhatt, was originally being lined up for Eid 2020. After the film was shelved, Salman sent out a cryptic tweet “Itna mat sochna mere baare mein, Dil mein aata hoon.. aur Eid pe bhi (Don’t worry about me, I reside in your hearts.. and arrive on Eid, too).” The line took off from a dialogue in Salman’s dialogue in his 2014 Eid blockbuster, “Kick”, which went “Mere

baare mein itna mat sochna, dil mein aata hoon, samajh mein nahi (Don’t worry about me, I reside in your hearts but you can’t figure me out).” This led to speculations that Salman would release “Kick 2” on Eid 2020, following “Inshallah” being shelved. Having committed himself to being in theatres on Eid next year, Salman finds himself in a quandary. After all, Bhai ke izzat ka sawaal hai. And didn’t he mouth those prophetic lines in Prabhudheva’s “Wanted” all those years ago? “Ek baar jo maine commitment kar di, toh phir main khudki bhi nahi sunta.”

Jackie, Anil to reunite in hilarious crime story: Subhash Ghai

Filmmaker Subhash Ghai is set to bring back the “Ram Lakhan” jodi of Jackie Shroff and Anil Kapoor on the big screen, but the new film is not a sequel to the 1989 superhit. Rather, the upcoming project is an original crime comedy with a message, titled “Ram Chand Kishan Chand”. “It’s not a sequel. I have narrated the story of ‘Ram Chand Kishan Chand’ to Jackie Shroff and Anil Kapoor. They have liked the story, plot and characters. Now we have to complete the script and do our best. They share fantastic chemistry,” Ghai told Indian media.

Sharing details about the film, the filmmaker said “It’s a hilarious crime story with a message.

It is about a good cop and a bad cop in their fifties, from two different states of India.” A young director will be roped in to helm the film, which might go on floors early next year. “I will be the creative producer, and the film will be made under the Mukta Arts banner. I look forward to seeing these two together in this blockbuster,” said Ghai.

Britney Spears, Kevin Federline reach new custody agreement Singer-songwriter Britney Spears and rapper Kevin Federline have reached a new custody agreement. The former partners have made a change to the child custody agreement they have regarding their sons Preston (13) and Jayden (12), reported Us Weekly. The duo, who called it quits in 2007, have formally agreed that the 41-year-old rapper will get 70 per cent custody of their children, while the 37-year-old singer will only get 30 percent unsupervised custodial rights, a source confirmed to the outlet. Earlier, the Grammy-winning singer and Kevin shared 50-50 custody of their boys, but they haven’t been following that arrangement since August 2018, according to documents obtained by TMZ. Instead, the former couple has been trying out their new 70-30 custody schedule before

formalising it in documents, which were filed on August 28. The ‘Baby One More Time’ songstress has been documenting the time spent with her sons on her social media handles all summer, posting pictures from their Disneyland trip with her boyfriend, Sam Asghari, in August and their trampoline time in June. In May, amid Britney’s conservatorship drama and following her mental health treatment, a source told Us Weekly that her ex-husband did not want to grant her any additional time with their sons. “Britney’s immediate concern has been in having increased visitation time with her boys,” the insider told the outlet at that time. “Kevin won’t allow the boys to spend more time with their mother until Britney is once again stable and therapeutic on

medication. He allows the boys to spend time with Britney, but it’s at his discretion,” the insider added. Britney filed for divorce from Kevin in November 2006. The split was settled by March 2007. At the time, Kevin maintained custody of the children until Britney stabilised after her breakdown. The singer has been struggling with her mental health recently. In April, Britney checked into a mental health facility due to the stress of her father Jamie Spears’ illness. Kevin is a proud father to four other children. He and his ex Shar Jackson share Kori (17), and Kaleb (15) while he welcomed Jordan (8) and Peyton (5) with his wife, Victoria Prince. As for Britney, she has been dating personal trainer Sam since late 2016.

Howard Gordon and Warren Leight set to write and serve as showrunners.

Gere was set to star in one of the two lead roles. He would have starred as one of two elderly Vietnam vets and best friends

According to sources, creative differences between Apple, Gordon, and Leight led to the streamer releasing the project and paying out a large financial penalty to the producers. There is still no official launch date for

Miley Cyrus, Kaitlynn Carter are ‘very happy together’ Singer-songwriter Miley Cyrus, who recently parted ways from her husband and actor Liam Hemsworth, has found new love in Kaitlynn Carter! The two were spotted spending their Labour Day weekend arm-in-arm, reported People. The 26-year-old singer and Carter were spotted on a lunch date in Los Angeles on Sunday with Cyrus’s mother Tish. In photographs from their outing, Cyrus can be seen wrapping her arm around Carter’s shoulder as both the ladies wore matching white t-shirts. “They live together and are very happy. Miley is doing great. She is moving on. She seems to have no regrets. She loves being with Kaitlynn,” a source close to Cyrus told People. Things between the pair have been heating up since August when the news of Cyrus calling it quits with Hemsworth first broke. Shortly after that, she and Carter, who recently split from husband Brody Jenner, were spotted kissing on an Italian getaway. Since returning to Los Angeles, the two have been inseparable and spotted together on multiple occasions, including last week’s MTV Video Music Awards in Newark, New Jersey. MTV cameras briefly caught Carter placing her hand on Cyrus’s head backstage before the singer performed an emotional version of her break-up anthem ‘Slide Away’ at the award ceremony. Later, they were photographed holding hands as they walked into the Up and

Down nightclub in New York City for the after-party. “Miley is very close with Kaitlynn. It’s romantic, but also a friendship. They are both going through similar stuff right now and are bonding over it,” an insider previously told the outlet. Cyrus and Hemsworth announced their separation in a statement released in August, just seven months after getting hitched following an on-again, off-again relationship of 10 years. “Liam and Miley have agreed to separate at this time,” the couple’s rep said in a statement. “Ever-evolving, changing as partners and individuals, they have decided this is what’s best while they both focus on themselves and careers. They still remain dedicated parents to all of the animals they share while lovingly taking this time apart. Please respect their process and privacy,” the rep added. Hemsworth filed for divorce on August 21, citing “irreconcilable differences”. The pair signed a prenuptial agreement ahead of their wedding. “She didn’t expect it and is a bit disappointed, but she is still doing well and has obviously moved on as well,” an insider close to Cyrus previously told People. Cyrus and Hemsworth first met in 2009 on the sets of ‘The Last Song’. They began dating shortly after that and made their red carpet debut as a couple in 2010. They’ve had some bumps in their romance over the years. The two were dating on

and off before Liam proposed in 2012. They called off their engagement a year later and reconciled their relationship in 2015. They officially tied the knot at their Nashville home in December 2018.

Liam Gallagher to get married for the third time Oasis frontman Liam Gallagher is all set to walk down the aisle for the third time after he reportedly got engaged to girlfriend Debbie Gwyther.

The rock legend proposed to Debbie while they were on a vacation in Italy, according to a report in “thesun.co.uk”. A source said that Debbie was “still in shock that Liam has finally popped the question”, although marriage has been on the cards for a while now. “The couple are hoping to tie the knot next year and Liam wants his kids by

his side on the big day,” the source added.

Liam was previously married to Patsy Kensit and Nicole Appleton. He has four children, Molly, 21, with ex-partner songwriter Lisa Moorish, Lennon, 19, with Patsy, Gene, 17, with Nicole, and Gemma, six, with American journalist Liza Ghorbani. The rockstar recently posted a lovedup photograph with Debbie on Instagram. “Behind every guru there’s another great guru,” he captioned the image.

“Today male actors are happy to accept roles that might be smaller than the female protagonist.”

SONAM KAPOOR AHUJA

INTERVIEW

By FATIMA PATEL

editor@asianstylemagazine.com Sonam K Ahuja is the daughter of famous Bollywood star Anil Kapoor. While it doesn’t hurt to have a father, who is known the world over, Sonam has truly made a name for herself, all on her own merit. From day one the Neerja actress made her mark, with a lead role in Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s magnum opus Saawariya. Despite the film not doing well at the box office, that didn’t deter Sonam from carving her name in one of the most challenging and competitive industries. Today the fashionista has a National Film Award a Filmfare Award, a clothing brand and has appeared on the Forbes India’s Celebrity 100 list based on her income and popularity. A regular on the Cannes Film circuit this is one celebrity who is certainly going places. Our Editor caught up with the bundle of talent for her upcoming Zoya Factor. Here’s what she had to say.

FATIMA

Firstly, congratulations on Padman winning a national award, you must be elated on the recognition of the film, more so due to the fact that it was around a challenging subject but made impact socially as well.

Thank you! Padman is one of the most special films of my career and I am glad that I was a part of such a film. It was not only entertaining but also inspirational and it started a menstrual hygiene awareness movement in the mainstream which

continues till date. Making a movie based on social issues always have its challenges but this is truly humbling to have received the acceptance of the whole country and this is the only gratification I can ask for.

Let’s talk about your look in the film. You’re a style icon and have your own label as well, so when it comes to styling the look for your characters, such as Zoya, do you get involved and offer your input, or are you entirely led by the production team? When I started out in the industry there wasn’t really a concept of style and fashion stylists. But I always felt like I understood it. I have always wanted to dress the way I wanted to because I felt I had a certain body type and fashion style. I really do believe in being myself when it comes to dressing. Rhea and I launched our label

Rheson (for this very reason!) because we wanted to make experimental style more affordable for women. When it comes to films, specifically the look for the characters, we usually have a team that recommends certain looks and I always give my inputs on what can be changed and what can be improved.

How much do you think luck plays in the success of a film at the box office? I believe it is always a combination of factors and the most important one being your story and content. If that is good and

strong no matter what a films budget is or who the actors are, it will definitely do well at the box office.

SONAM

Let’s talk about Zoya Factor, how did the film come about? When Aarti and Abhishek read the book, they found it very interesting and they called to ask if I would be interested. As I had already read the book, I knew the

story. I jokingly told Aarti saying that ‘I am Zoya’ and nobody else can do it. I was excited that they thought I could play Zoya and of course I agreed to do the role.

Zoya Factor is based on a book written by Anuja Chauhan which I believe you have read. Did this make it easier for you to get into the character of Zoya? I am a voracious reader and I had read the book before the film was offered to me. I found it to be extremely interesting despite its unconventional storyline. It was easy to get into the character because Zoya is a very normal and average character and that’s what I loved about her. I think it is important for me to play such characters

who are normal and regular and who have regular problems because all of us have them. Zoya is real and relatable and I am sure people will feel that after watching the film.

Before signing any movie, you always trust the script and the director but there are times when a film doesn’t get lucky. I believe there are other reasons as well. But

Do you believe in superstitions? If so, what is the most superstitious thing you have ever believed in? I’m not superstitious but I believe more in astrology since I think it has more to do with science and there are strong logics behind it. But I do believe in destiny. I feel

everyone’s destiny is already decided. I feel hard work is important as well and it usually is a combination of destiny and hard work.

Would you say you’ve been pretty lucky, in the sense that you’ve managed to get films where the main protagonist is female, such as Neerja and Aisha and now Zoya Factor? I think the most important thing is the film and its content. Male actors today are happy to accept roles that might be smaller than the female protagonist but strong on content. I have been lucky to work with many such actors through my career such as Dhanush, Dulqueer Salmaan, Ayushman

So, if I was to ask you which film of yours didn’t get lucky at the box office, but should have done, which film would you name?

Khurrana and Rajkumar Rao. These actors are doing much better than their contemporaries. I think it depends on their confidence levels as well and how they feel about themselves and their work. I feel this is progress and this is what is working, content driven cinema.

in the recent past I feel all my films have done reasonably well and that motivates me to do more content driven cinema so that I don’t have to rely on luck alone.

Who would you say is your lucky charm? I don’t know who my lucky charm is, but my dad believes I am his lucky charm. Sonam means the fortunate one. Since I was born my fathers (Anil Kapoor) movies

such as Ram Lakhan and Tezaab did really well at the box office. My father believes his life actually changed since my birth.

What would you describe as one of the most-luckiest moments of your life so far? I don’t think there is any one specific moment but there are a few such moments that make me feel I am so lucky such as being born to the parents that I’ve been born to, to having a loving happy home, to meeting the love of my life and getting

married to him. I’m also very lucky to have a full life and to be passionate about my job. I am very fortunate, and I am always very grateful to God. I don’t know if all of this can be called lucky, but I think I am lucky.

AWARD WINNING BEAUTY SALON

Prity Farooq is the owner & founder of Prity: the award winning beauty salon offering a high end spa, hair & beauty service in Bradford. Prity's impeccable service teamed with its ever-evolving range of products and services has made it a success and it continues to grow bigger and better. The journey that led to the creation of Prity- the salon, began long before in the heart of India where Prity (the owner) grew up. She was born in Jamshedpur, India and from an early age Prity had a creative flair for Business and Art. She honed her skills whilst training in New Delhi, learning ancient herbal and Ayurvedic

remedies which she planned to bring to the Western Market here in the UK. She has since been working as a hair and beauty therapist in the UK since 1991. Prity's debut into the beauty industry came about when she opened her successful flagship branch on Legrams Lane in 2005. Since then, she has received much recognition for her signature beauty treatments, as well as her highly maintained business standards of hygiene. Prity Hair, Beauty & Spa has won numerous awards, most notably the ‘Customer Excellence Awards for three years running.

Do You Suffer from Scarring or Pigmentation? Then Mesotherapy Might Be the Answer Ever since a young age, I have had a special passion for skincare and learnt mostly ancient herbal and ayurvedic remedies. So, when I moved to the UK and opened my salon over a decade ago, I was very focused on maintaining simple natural treatments to my clients and now thanks to advanced technology and regular learning I have been able to bring about new advanced treatments with the help of new technologies. This month therefore I want to share with everyone the treatment of Mesotherapy Mesotherapy is a gentle safe, simple and effective digital collagen induction facial treatment for men and women wanting to target the following: • •

Fine lines and Wrinkles Oily skin

• • •

Scarring, including acne and chickenpox scars. Open pores Pigmentation including age spots

The tiny needles used in skin micro-needling make microscopic channels in the dermis, triggering the body’s healing response to kickstart production of new collagen and elastin, plumping up the skin resulting in smoother, firmer, younger looking skin. In the treatment of scarring, it rejuvenates tissue resulting in the relaxation of scar tissue. The treatment time takes approximately 30 minutes to an hour and whilst not painful, it can be slightly uncomfortable with minimal downtime. A little bruising and swelling may occur but it will be short lived and should settle within 24 hours, the skin will become more radiant, hydrated, nourished and firmer with an improved texture. There are significant benefits to Mesotherapy. It can instantly improve dull, tired looking skin and superficial wrinkles but can also improve sluggish blood circulation aiding the body to flush out ageing toxins. This treatment can also be used to address pigmentation problems and acne scarring. I recently treated a client who had blocked pores and pigmentation around the face area. Her skin was dry, dull, puffy and lines appearing. On having the first treatment my client described her initial experience as uncomfortable but manageable and said it felt like scratches across her

face. She told me she felt the needle going in and out very quickly (it is a shallow needle) and whilst the needle was going in and out, she felt me moving it across her face almost breaking a layer of the skin which would then help rejuvenation of the skin combined with vitamins. The client said she could also feel the vitamins dripping down the surface of her skin on her face during the treatment and said she found this quite refreshing! Our client had this to say after her first treatment: “I have to admit I left the salon with what looked like cat scratches across my face but after the redness dissipated and my skin was back to normal it felt instantly plumped up, fresh, clean and new looking! “The treatment worked amazingly to reduce the finer lines around my eyes. After a couple of treatments my skin felt and looked hydrated and dewy, the scarring looked minimal too. “I would definitely have this treatment done again and again as the recovery time is minimal and it was almost pain free and

effects were almost instant.” Our customers are really our best advertisers. If you want to see results for yourselves then why not book a free no obligation consultation at our Salon. We now provide a variety of mesotherapy combination treatments that can aid skin rejuvenation, boost elasticity and improve complexion and radiance. From the specialist peel that cleanses and exfoliates the skin, to Mesotherapy that can reduce the appearance of scars, pigmentation and lines, you’ll love whichever treatment you choose. Apple TV Plus to Compete with Netflix FACEBOOK/@ASIANSUNDAYNEWSKIRKLEES TWITTER/@AS_KIRKLEES

Along with the announcement of its brand new products, which consisted of three new phones, a new basic iPad with a slightly larger screen; and a new Apple Watch with a face that never turns off, Apple also announced their plans for their new streaming service Apple TV+ The service is launching with a range of starfilled titles from Jennifer Aniston to Reese Whetherspoon to Jason Momoa. The service will be priced at just £4 a month, but a years subscription will be free for those who purchase an iPhone, iPad, Apple TV or Mac.

However, with an enticing price or the free offer, Apple TV+ may still struggle to compete with the likes f Netflix, because content is most certainly king. Experts believe however that Apple’s intention isn’t to make ‘immediate’ money from streaming, especially since a substantial proportion of the desired user base will qualify for the free year. Instead, the goal is to build up a new platform for the company and make money where it is most successful in selling expensive hardware to users and taking a 30% cut of all the payments they send to developers. To help you understand things better, let’s first explain that there are two things called Apple TV. The first is the set-top box that Apple sells to sit under your TV. Since its relaunch a few years back as an app platform to sit alongside iOS, watchOS and macOS, the Apple TV range has struggled to justify itself in the homes of many: if all you do is watch the two or three largest streaming services, it’s wildly overpowered and overpriced compared with the competition from Roku or Amazon. That’s where the second Apple TV comes in – the TV app, which runs not only on the TV hardware, but also on Macs, iPads and iPhones. The app combines TV and movies from every streaming provider, letting users jump between shows from different services, combine their algorithmic recommendations, and pick up where they left off across devices. It’s also intended to be a revenueraiser for Apple through the Channels service, which lets users subscribe to individual TV channels and watch the content in the app. Great for those services without the backing for their own standalone streaming app, but which still have some exclusive content – and great for Apple sitting in the middle.

There’s just one problem: the TV app is not supported by Netflix, which means a substantial chunk of Apple customers never even open it. And so, Apple TV+. Suddenly, a growing proportion of Apple customers have subscription to a buzzy streaming service only accessible through the TV app. At least on paper, that subscription is worth £48 a year. All it takes is one show to catch on for those viewers, and they get in the habit of opening the TV app, at least weekly, to watch the new episodes, placing Apple in the lucrative middleman position in yet another industry. Apple is likely to get some decent success with Apple TV+.

VisitEngland steps up campaign to get young Brits to holiday at home VisitEngland has launched the next phase of its campaign to get more young Brits to take a short break at home with a series of new short films and images. The new content targets young people with experiences and activities typically taken during a gap year that can be condensed into what VisitEngland has termed a ‘Microgap,’ described as “the best bits of a gap year in a few days in the UK.” The series of five 10-second clips and 10 images urge young Brits to ‘Go Wild,’ ‘Learn More,’ ‘Switch Off’ and ‘Give Back’ and are displayed on digital billboards at sites across England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales. A longer 30-second clip is being used across online channels including social media, digital display and ‘on demand’ television adverts during the six week campaign that runs until the end of October. VisitEngland statistics show that 16-to34 year olds had the lowest growth across all age groups for taking holidays at home during the last decade, 2008 to 2018. VisitBritain/VisitEngland

Director

of

Marketing Clare Mullin said: “We want more young Brits to get out and experience the amazing destinations and activities on our doorstep whether learning how to paddle-board in London, switching off in a log cabin in the Cairngorms in Scotland or tackling cliff camping in Anglesey, Wales, trying your hand at street art in Manchester or contemplating the wonder of nature at the Dark Hedges, Ballymoney in Northern Ireland. “By working with destinations and tourism businesses our Microgap campaign is igniting the passion for domestic travel in young people right now and building a habit that will last a lifetime, boosting growth from tourism and spreading its economic benefits across more of the year.” The #MyMicrogap campaign, now in its second year, follows research by VisitEngland into the travel habits of young Brits which showed that less than a quarter (24%) of 18-to-34 year olds were likely to take a career break to travel in the next three years. The idea of ‘microgapping’ however appealed to almost two-thirds (64%)

with more than half (57%) likely to take a microgap during the next three years. Research showed that young people keen on taking a microgap wanted the same self-development opportunities typical of a gap-year. Top activities and experiences sought were wellbeing and relaxation, visiting iconic landmarks, trying local

food and drink and seeing nature and wildlife. The campaign is run by VisitEngland in partnership with the tourism organisations of Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. #MyMicrogap, part of the UK Government’s GREAT Britain & Northern Ireland campaign, is

expected to generate an additional £50 million in domestic tourism spend for the economy. Tourism is worth £127 billion annually to the UK economy, creating jobs and boosting economic growth right across the country.

Is the Fraud Levy a Good Idea? There has been wide spread criticism over the last few years of how little fraud customers are protected in the event that individuals become victims of fraud. It is widely accepted that the banks do not make it easy in many cases for victims to be able to get compensation. I have written in the past about experiences some of our readers have had in the past, when trying to get compensation. Trade Body UK Finance have proposed a levy on bank transfer transactions over £30, which would add 2.9p to the transaction. This means the banks will effectively pay the charge, and this charge would then be collected with a view to being added to a central fund that will be used to reimburse those that have been the victims of fraud. There is an issue, as although the proposals in my view make sound

sense, we are not aware whether banks will force people to pay the charge. This means each time someone makes a transfer over £30 it will cost them 2.9p. It might be the case that banks indirectly charge the consumer by either forcing people to pay the charge, or by saving rate cuts to compensate for the loss The banks could also increase borrowing rates; therefore, leading to higher cost of borrowing. The proposal comes a few months after some of the UK’s biggest banks agreed to be bound by a code of conduct that is designed to better protect victims of the so called push payment scams. These scams usually take place when consumers agree to transfer money into the bank account of a fraudster. This leaves the victim in a situation where they are blamed, and deemed negligent by the banks.

Some of you might be surprised to learn it cost victims circa £350 million pounds in losses, and the amount that was paid back to victims by their banks in compensation is unknown. The eight banking groups that signed up to the voluntary code earlier in 2018 had set aside £100 million to compensate victims. Now, so far two banks have said they will not pass the charge onto customers, which is good news, but the cynic in me is thinking how long before this is scrapped, and everyone is paying for transfer of funds. I guess overall in my mind I am thinking is it really a big cost to those of us that hardly make any bank transfers. In my view it is a small cost to pay for peace of mind. This coupled with the fact that banks are already working on ways to reduce push payment scams, such

as a confirmation of payee system. This will let fraud victims know if the name of the account holder they are sending monies to is the same as the name on their transaction. My thoughts are that the fraud levy is

a good idea, and it means most of us even if we undertake 10 transactions a month would only pay 29p. It means victims of fraud, might get their hard earned funds back sooner. It is a small price to pay for peace of mind going forward!

Warehousing Your Claim Warehouses and litigation are two words that are not often associated with one another. However, the High Court case of Asturion Foundation v Alibrahim has clarified the significance of the term “warehousing” in the context of civil litigation. The practice of putting a claim on hold without ever intending to pursue it is commonly referred to as “warehousing”. However, in that case the Judge concluded that case law had not established a test for what constituted “warehousing” or whether the same amounts to an “abuse of process” warranting the striking out of a claim. So, what powers does the Court have when a party to litigation is causing undue delay?

factor which transforms the delay into an “abuse”. On the other hand, delay combined with a total or wholesale disregard of the rules of Court with full awareness as to the consequences is capable of amounting to an “abuse”, entitling the Court to strike out the action. An additional factor to transform the delay into an “abuse” may be an intention to never bring the litigation to a conclusion so where a Claimant delays in prosecuting their case without giving a valid reason, the Court is entitled to infer that their motive is not a proper one. Even if the Claimant subsequently decides to pursue their claim after delaying for a substantial period of time without giving a valid reason, the Court can still find that there has been an “abuse of process”.

The Civil Procedure Rules (the court rules that govern civil claims) allow the Court to strike out a statement of case (pleading) if it appears to the Court that it is an abuse of the court process or it is otherwise likely to prevent the just disposal of the proceedings.

Another factor that, combined with substantial delays, will often amount to an “abuse” is the non-compliance with Court Orders.

When the Court strikes out a statement of case, this will ordinarily lead to the Court giving judgement in favour of the opposing party to the litigation.

Further a claim may also be struck out for abuse of process where the delay has caused significant prejudice to the other side.

Delay, among others, is one category which falls under the “abuse of process” title. However, delay on its own, regardless of the length of the delay, cannot be categorised as an “abuse of process” without there being some additional

The courts take a very dim view of litigants who fail to comply with its orders.

Innovator in Cricket – It’s Saqlain Mushtaq KIRKLEES | SEPTEMBER 2019

Asian Sunday had the good fortune of catching up with the pioneer of ‘Doosra’ (term given in cricket to a particular type of delivery by an off-spin bowler), former international cricketer turned coach Saqlain Mushtaq, thanks to a chance meeting at Bradford’s pioneering property developer’s house - Sonny Ali. How did you two meet? I ask on arrival. “We met in Pakistan” recalled Sonny “But Saqlain being an international cricketer you must meet so many fans and people, how did you manage to take an instant liking to our Bradford based property tycoon” I question. “We both went out to buy groceries for our wives and it was raining.” Replied a humourful Saqlain. “It’s the way he called out my name, very respectful. He called out Saqlainbhai and gave his salaams (salutations). I felt it and thought what a respectful, loving and softly spoken person.

“Because we meet so many people and have so many fans, so it’s just the way he spoke it touched me. I was on the phone too, while he called out and I said to him, can you hold a second while I was listening about getting tomatoes.” Upon Saqlain completing his sentence the entire rooms burst’s into laughter. From his relaxed approach and gentle sense of humour we get to see a glimpse of Saqlain the friend, the father, and the husband just a normal man off the cricket pitch. Wait, did I say ‘normal’? It’s a grave injustice to refer to Saqlain as normal. You cannot put one of the worlds most highly regarded spin bowlers in the history of cricket in the normal c a t e g o r y . Genius and innovator are two

words that immediately come to mind.

Along with inventing the ‘doosra’ he was the fastest to reach the milestones of 100, 150, 200 and 250 wickets in ODIs His journey has been fascinating with a lineage of sporting talent, where his grandfather played the popular South Asian sport Kabbadi, his father played hockey and his brother played cricket. Cricket is number one in Pakistan he informs me. “My brothers used to play first class cricket, so I used to go with them and play.” His interest in cricket first started at age seven, he describes how in Pakistan they lived in a house with terraces and so he used to go on the roof and play cricket using a table tennis ball. “I was small skinny and around seven years of age. So, I used to watch my brother and then play on the roof.” Following a long stint from street cricket, to club cricket it was inevitable for Saqlain to end up playing international cricket. “I wasn’t a bad student, but I wasn’t a great student either.” Saqlain revealed. Growing up Saqlain quickly realised that despite having an education and degrees, his elder brothers struggled to get high profile jobs, so rather than allow his father to continue getting into debt to pay for his further education he chose to work as a mechanic and do electrician work, until his cricketing ambition materialised. “My mother used to say always make prayer, that within 48 hours you never know the acceptance of the dua (prayer).

So, whenever I used to stay up late night, I used to say, give me something special that no one ever has. So, the Almighty gave me the ‘Doosra’

True enough Saqlain became the spin bowler who brought innovation to cricket with the new term ‘doosra’ being coined after his spectacular delivery which others just did not know how to bowl or face. We move on to talk about the master spin bowler’s coach. He tells me that his coach didn’t teach him the technicalities of how to hold a ball. “He used to love me and care about me a lot and I think he saw some kind of potential in me.” Saqlain told me. From ages 13, 14, 15 to 16 Saqlain’s coach used to ask him just, one question every day. “When I started my club cricket, he saw me and said oh wonderful, you’re a very good bowler. On the first day he said to me, how many wickets did you take today? I said I don’t know I didn’t count. So, the next day he called me and said how many wickets! I said sir 30. He said, really? Everyday he used to ask me how many wickets. I filled my whole diary with how many wickets I took.” Recalled Saqlain.

Saqlain Mushtaq with good friend and property tycoon Sonny Ali

“After a few months. He said come tomorrow and count how many wickets you took in the past few months and we counted, it was thousands, so he called everyone and said he took thousands of wickets, we need to get a mithai (Indian sweets) dabba. He paid for it from his own pocket. We all had some mithai. Then another month, he kept asking how many wickets and so he was just playing with my mind. How many wickets? How many wickets? It wasn’t until I started to play under 19’s that the second question he started asking me was, how did you get him out? I used to say, LBW, he said, how, what you did? I used to say big turn. He used to ask front foot or back foot. Oh, back foot, did you know how you got him? So now he was tactically educating me. So, he made my mind, play cricket and how are you going to get him out. So, these two questions are what got me not just playing cricket but thinking cricket and it was the best coaching anyone could ever give”

Saqlain with Engalnd’s Moin Ali

SPORTS

Saqlain was very fond of his coach. He even credits the ‘doosra’ technique to his coach, because of what his

coach seeded in his brain. Sadly, all good things come to an end and Saqlain’s international cricket playing days ended in 2004 due to an injury. Fortunately, after being part of many international teams, the 42-year-old has currently been assigned as a coach for the England cricket team. I ask him how he felt during the Cricket World Cup, when England clinched the title following an intense play of super overs. “I was relaxed” came the reply. In response to my confused look, Saqlain goes on to explain that the reason for his calm composure in every situation is his belief in his faith and his regular prayers. “I prayed before the world cup, whatever will happen will happen, win or lose it comes from the Almighty. I was happy and proud and felt good, but to be honest my wife was asking are you going to the cricket ground or the masjid.” He laughed “You must enjoy the moments. “Keep striving, keep moving forward, don’t step backward.” He advises For cricket fans that’s certainly some advice to cherish.

PCB Chairman Hopeful of Misbah-UlHaq, Sarfraz Ahmed and Babar Azam Trio By AYYAZ MALIK

ayyaz@asiansunday.co.uk PCB Chairman Ehsan Mani is hopeful that the trio of Misbah-ul-Haq, Sarfaraz Ahmed and Babar Azam will do well for Pakistan. Babar Azam has been named Pakistan’s vice-captain for their upcoming home series against Sri Lanka while Sarfaraz Ahmed has been retained as captain of the side.

in a release that it had confirmed the appointments on the basis of recommendations made by Pakistan head coach and chief selector Misbah-ul-Haq and the PCB Cricket Committee. PCB Chairman Ehsan Mani said that Babar’s elevation is part of his gradual development as a future captain. “I am hopeful the trio of Misbah, Sarfaraz and Babar will do well for Pakistan cricket,” Mani said.

Misbah believes that he is better placed to get the best out of Sarfraz as he knows him “better than most of the cricketers” due to the fact that Sarfraz played under Misbah. “I have emphasised on changing the dressing room culture and mind-set of the players to achieve better results, and I believe Sarfaraz is a perfect fit to help me attain these objectives,” said Misbah. “In the past couple of weeks,

Sarfaraz and I have worked together on certain areas of his cricket that will enhance his overall performance. Both of us realise it is a performanceoriented world and we are expected to give our best every time we take the field. I look forward to working with him and hope we will succeed in changing the outlook of the Pakistan cricket team.” Sarfraz echoed Misbah’s opinion. “I have played most of my cricket under Misbah and we know each

other pretty well.

I think we will make a good combination, which will contribute to improved performances of the side across all formats,” he said. The ODI and T20I series will comprise three matches each and will be played between September 27 and October 9. While the ODIs will be played in Karachi, the T20I series will be played in Lahore.

Liverpool Seem to be on Top Form, but can They Beat Man City Record? By AYYAZ MALIK

ayyaz@asiansunday.co.uk Liverpool have been on an incredible winning streak since March. They were Champions League winners in June and five points clear at the top of the Premier League table in mid-September, but can they keep this up? Well the Reds, are currently sitting on top after five wins from five giving them the perfect start in the Premier League with 15 points, giving them a five-point advantage to Manchester City. It also means they have become only the fourth team to win 14 top-fight fixtures in a row, equaling Arsenal’s record of 14 in 2002 and putting them one behind Manchester City’s run of 15 in a row this year and four behind the 18 consecutive league wins City achieved in 2017. Arsenal’s run was ended by a 2-2 draw at West Ham on 24 August 2002 while Tottenham

brought City’s 15-game winning run to an end last month. Their 18-game winning run, meanwhile, was halted by Crystal Palace, who held Pep Guardiola’s side to a goalless draw on 31 December 2017. The next five Premier League games will surely be a major decider for Liverpool to surpass Manchester City’s record run. They play Chelsea on 22 September, Sheff

United on 28 September, Leicester on 5 October, Man Utd on 20 October and Tottenham on 27 October. Last season Liverpool beat Tottenham home and away, but they drew each of the corresponding fixtures with Chelsea, Manchester United and Leicester. The last time they played Sheffield United in the Premier League was back in the 2006-

07 season and on that occasion the Blades managed to hold the reds to a 1-1 draw at Bramall Lane. To add to past form against those sides, all apart from Sheffield United currently occupy the top six. Jurgen Klopp’s side will certainly have to be at their best to maintain their run and overtake City’s record.

Anthony Joshua Ready to Avenge His First Professional Loss with Andy Ruiz Rematch By AYYAZ MALIK

ayyaz@asiansunday.co.uk ANTHONY JOSHUA believes he must beat the “best heavyweight out there” to regain his world titles from Andy Ruiz Jr. Joshua surrendered his IBF, WBA and WBO belts to the Mexican following one of the biggest shocks in boxing history on his American debut in New York in June. The 29-year-old Briton has a swift chance to avenge the first loss of his professional career when the pair meet for a hotly-anticipated rematch on December 7 in Saudi Arabia. “My fights are never what you call cherry-picking in boxing,” Joshua said at a press conference in London. “They are the elite of the elite, top of the crop, that little bit of motivation now when I am fighting someone who has the skill set and is the champion. “It’s not like I’m fighting someone that is a stepping- stone to a champion. “You can’t overlook Andy and his talent and his successes in the ring because I am fighting the best out there right now. In my opinion, Andy Ruiz is the best

heavyweight out there.

“When that bell goes, we are going to get down and dirty and I can’t wait to trade some leather.” Ruiz knocked down Joshua four times to land a seventhround stoppage win at Madison Square Garden on June 1. The 29-yearold, who was born in America but fights under the Mexican flag, was a late replacement for the bout after Jarrell Miller failed

multiple drug tests. Former Olympic champion Joshua faced criticism and accusations of complacency following the unexpected loss but insists he has a relentless desire to return to the top of the sport.

“Motivation – it’s never going to leave. I was watching a documentary on the way here. It was about another boxer, they were talking about, ‘Man, all I want to do is become a champion’,” said Joshua. “And when they got to that stage, it was like they had nothing else to live for, so motivation was capped. “The motivation is forever within me. Once I’ve got my purpose of life organised, I can do anything, and that motivation will remain the same. “Put me on the street

to clean graffiti off the wall, I want to make sure that my graffiti cleaning is better than yours.” While Joshua admits losing his crowns to Ruiz means he must make some changes to his preparation, he has no intention of altering his perceived nice guy image. “I could come up here and start talking in a different manner and in a different fashion to what you are used to due to the fact that I don’t sit here as the current champion,” he continued. “But I felt like circumstances shouldn’t change character. We are who we are. “I’ve got to make a few changes in my lifestyle now to correct and align them again, so come December 7 I’m shooting straight and I know where I’m headed. And that’s towards these

titles. “At the minute, they are just out of reach, but sooner or later I will be able to touch them again.” World champion Ruiz compared the prospect of Joshua taking back the titles to someone attempting to steal breakfast cereal from his children. “I know AJ wants to get these belts back, they’re mine,” said the California-born fighter. “Of course, I still have that hunger. I just got these belts you think I want to lose them right away! “I’ve been doing this since I was sixyears-old. This is the only thing I know to do, besides working with my dad in construction, being in the sun – I don’t want to do that s***. “I feel Anthony’s trying to take my kids’ Cheerios, you know! That’s what gives me that extra motivation. “The only motivation I have right now is for my kids and my loved ones, so if someone’s going to try and take that away from, I am going to die trying [to defend it].”
