FA CONDEMNS RACIST ABUSE OF PLAYERS AFTER ENGLAND'S DEFEAT TO ITALY IN FINAL England's Football Association in the early hours of Monday morning, after the final at Wembley condemned racist abuse of players on social media following the Three Lions' loss in the Euro Cup final. Italy ended hosts England's dream to win the Euro 2020 at the Wembley Stadium on Sunday. Azzurri defeated England 3-2 on penalties after the normal 90-minute action had finished at 1-1 and even extra time was not able to break the deadlock. Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho, and Bukayo Saka all missed the chance to net goal in the penalty shootouts. "The FA strongly condemns all forms of discrimination and is appalled by the online racism that has been aimed at some of our England players on social media," an official statement read. "We could not be clearer that anyone behind such disgusting behaviour is not welcome in following the team. We will do all we can to support the players affected while urging the toughest punishments possible for anyone responsible," it added. The England football team felt "disgusted" when the players were subjected to "discriminatory abuse" on social media following the Euro Cup final loss. "We're disgusted that some of our squad - who have
given everything for the shirt this summer - have been subjected to discriminatory abuse online after tonight's game. We stand with our players," the England team tweeted. England captain Harry Kane said anyone can
miss the penalty and players will grow from it as they did everything possible for a win but it wasn't the hosts' night. "You've got to hold your heads high. It's been a fantastic tournament. Anyone can miss a penalty. We win together, we lose together," Kane told BBC One as reported by goal. com. "We'll learn and grow from it. Those boys will grow from it and it will give us more motivation for the World Cup next year. We were playing against a very good side. We got off to the perfect start. "Maybe dropped a little too deep sometimes. They had a lot of the ball. We looked fairly in control, they didn't create too many chances. Penalties is penalties. We went through a process. The boys did everything they could, it just wasn't our night," he added. After England got off to a flying start, Leonardo Bonucci got the equaliser for Italy as he netted the ball into the goalpost in the 67th minute, bringing the scoreline level at 1-1. No more goals were scored in the match, and hence the game had to progress to extra time. The extra time was also not able to separate the two teams, and hence the game progressed to the much-dreaded penalty shootout. In the penalty shootout, Italy edged out England 3-2 and as a result, Italy won their second Euro title.
BRANSON-BEZOS SPACE TOURISM RIVALRY GETS NASTIER BEFORE FLIGHT While billionaire Branson has jet off to space aboard his Virgin Galactic's VSS Unity spaceplane on July 11, Amazon Founder Bezos is expected to take off in his own space tourism rocket on July 20. Blue Origin tweeted a chart two days before Branson's flight, comparing Virgin Galactic's spaceplane to Blue Origin's New Shepard on window size, vehicle type, escape system, and other factors. "From the beginning, New Shepard was designed to fly above the Karman line, so none of our astronauts have an asterisk next to their name," the company said in its tweet. The Karman line, 100 kms above the
ground, is the boundary of space. Blue Origin's New Shepard rocket aims to launch its crew capsule just beyond the Karman line for a few minutes of weightlessness, while Virgin Galactic's SpaceShipTwo spaceplane flies 89 kms high - just over the boundary of space defined by the US government, reports The Verge. Blue Origin further tweeted. "For 96 per cent of the world's population, space begins 100 km up at the internationally recognised Karman line." Reacting to the tweet, Nicola Pecile, a Virgin Galactic test pilot, posted "This pissing contest about the Karman
line is so childish that is getting really embarrassing to watch". "Flying above 100K ft is already so complicated that anyone doing so should deserve a special recognition," Pecile tweeted. The tweet was later deleted. In another tweet, he cited Virgin Galactic's first spaceflight with humans in 2018 and added that Blue Origin "has flown only mannequins so far." Earlier, Blue Origin's CEO Bob Smith wished Branson well after Virgin's announcement, but said that "they're not flying above the Karman line and it's a very different experience." When Branson was asked on
CNBC whether he's trying to beat Bezos to space, he replied "Jeff who?" "I've always been a dreamer. My mom taught me to never give up and to reach for the stars. On July 11, it's time to turn that dream into a reality aboard the next Virgin Galactic spaceflight," Branson said in a tweet. Last month, Bezos announced a trip to the edge of space aboard his venture Blue Origin's first crewed mission of New Shepard on July 20 with his brother Mark and two others. On July 1, Bezos announced the fourth crew member Wally Funk, a legendary aviator who also holds a ticket for Virgin's VSS Unity

£50,000 OF CASH AND CARS SEIZED FROM DEWSBURY DRUG DEALERS Police investigating organised crime in Kirklees have seized cars and cash worth up to £50,000 as part of an investigation into Class A drug dealing. The Kirklees Programme Precision Team and police financial investigators will apply to confiscate the two Volkswagen Golf cars and £40,000 in cash under the Proceeds of Crime Act following the conviction and sentencing of two Dewsbury men at Leeds Crown Court. Suhail Hussain (28) was sentenced to three years six months in prison on June 29 after pleading guilty to two Possession with Intent to Supply Class A drugs offences and two Possession with Intent to Supply
Class B drugs offences. His brother Aqib Hussain (27) was sentenced to 15 months in prison on the same date after also pleading guilty to two Possession with Intent to Supply Class B drugs offences. Officers raided a property on Victoria Road in Dewsbury in November 2019 and recovered significant amounts of cash and drugs. A number of enquiries followed which resulted in both men being charged with drugs offending in December 2020. Programme Precision officers themselves are embedded within each District of West Yorkshire and work with colleagues to investigate all manner of organised crime
including style offending. Police Constable Sean Carter of the Kirklees Programme Precision Team, said: “Programme Precision was established to both combat serious organised crime in West Yorkshire and to protect communities from its insidious effects, and this has been the

from them. “We now intend to use Proceeds of Crime Act legislation to confiscate the cash and cars from them permanently.” He added: “Organised crime is a blight on communities in West Yorkshire and officers are determined to make sure those involved lose out financially as well as losing their freedom. We continue to appeal to residents to help us make this happen. “If you have information about drug dealing or any other form of such organised crime in Kirklees please contact us. “You can also contact the independent Crimestoppers charity anonymously on 0800 555 111.”
DONALD TRUMP’S NEW DOPPELGÄNGER IS SINGING ICE CREAM MAN FROM PAKISTAN
Donald Trump has had many doppelgängers over the years – but
people in a small Pakistani city think they’ve found the ultimate lookalike in a singing ice cream man. Locals believe the crooning vendor, thought to be in his mid-40s, in Sahiwal, Punjab bears a startling resemblance to the former US President. The man, who has albinism, has won the hearts of locals by regularly belting out songs in Urdu. While he’s unlikely to enter US politics anytime soon, onlookers say he’s made for the stage. Fan Imran Malik said: ‘His voice is soulful – he’s an artist. ‘He seems to fascinate everyone on the streets not because of selling ice cream but because of his incredible singing. ‘This man should have been rocking the stage rather than selling ice cream.’ Another local named Azam Khan, agreed, saying: ‘He has set an example for all

RESEARCHERS FIND HOW PLANTS BECOME GOOD NEIGHBOURS IN TIMES OF STRESS. BY NEWS DESK Scientists at the John Innes and the University of Bristol have discovered how plants manage to live alongside each other in places that are dark and shady. Moderate shade or even the threat of shade - detected by phytochrome photoreceptors - causes plants to elongate to try to outgrow the competition. But in the deep gloom of a dense forest or a cramped crop canopy where resources and photosynthesis are limited, this strategy does not work. In these conditions, it would be a waste of energy and detrimental to survival to elongate stems because seedlings would never be able to over-grow larger neighbours. So how do plants prevent elongated growth under deep shade conditions? The secret lies in their internal clocks, said the research collaboration from the John Innes Centre and the University of Bristol. They
have discovered that when plants detect deep shade, this changes the expression of genes in certain parts of the circadian clock - the internal daily timer found in plants and other organisms. These clock components perform an additional role in suppressing stem elongation, blocking the
over-topping of neighbours that would normally happen in moderate shade. The work identifies a previously unknown role for the circadian clock in regulating plant development, and the findings have implications for both natural plant populations and crops, say the researchers.
The study is relevant to natural plant populations because the researchers identify a new process that controls the development of plants growing under conditions such as those found in temperate woodlands in summer and tropical rainforests. Crops are often grown in dense stands which means that the
plants shade each other; so the findings identify processes that might be manipulated to allow crops to be grown more densely or to control their height. Professor Antony Dodd of the John Innes Centre said, "The biological clock of plants is a key regulator of their development and fitness. This work sheds new light on a new role for circadian rhythms in adapting plants to competition with other plants in their environments." Professor Kerry Franklin of the University of Bristol said, "The majority of plant shade avoidance research focuses on early neighbour detection and moderate shading. This work reveals new insights into how plants adapt to very deep shade, where resources are severely limited." The study provides evidence for the robustness and stability of the circadian clock in stressful environments, and information that may be useful in developing new generations of crops in a challenging climate.

His father had even won many titles in body building which included YMCA barbell champion and unified Yorkshire champion among many. “I used to watch my uncle and dad train and was always mesmerised and in awe of their physique, but I never thought of doing what they did.” Explained Dody.

Dody started his career in competitive body building at the tender age of eighteen. While he never knew that this would be his calling, he remembers vividly as a nine-year-old child watching his late father and uncle training in the family garage and competing

“The turning point for me came, at around age eleven, when walking home from school I saw a group of boys jump my brother. I was really upset by this, and I started shouting that I am going to come back and get you. So, my brother and I started training and from there it just grew and grew and I loved it.” Continued Dody. However, things weren’t all that smooth sailing. Dody recalls at

the age of 14 things took a very troubling turn for him. His father had gone back to Pakistan, he felt distanced towards his six siblings and was subject to bullying at school. “So, from when I started getting bullied things got even more serious for me. One day I snuck into a gym called Top Bodies. When I went in, I saw this guy who was massive. His legs were bigger than mine, that I was so spooked out I left.” Dody said. Undeterred Dody, braved a return to the gym and met Tina Barker, who took him under her wing and supported his body building journey. A short stint in prison and some aggressive workouts Dody started to compete as a body builder.
“At around age 27 I got a job and started off at around 12 stone weight, but as time went by, I wasn’t happy with what I was doing and piled on weight to 19.5 stone. It wasn’t until I reached my thirties that I started getting pains in my chest and breathlessness and I thought this wasn’t good. That’s when I started to implement things that were taught to me by Tina at the age of 14 back into my life.

But Nigel was the one who taught me how to pose. They loved my waist which went from a 44 down to 25 inch and my quads were like 20-25 almost same as my waist and I was a very desirable aesthetic shape. I had the shape that no Asians had. So, they decided to put me in a show.” Dody qualified in his first outing and went on to play further competitions, which he started getting top prizes for. He took Dody just six months to go from 19.5 stone to 11 stone. It became so good that I then just quit my job.” Today Dody trains men and women from all over the world. Some of his clients have called him out to Turkey to train. He is perhaps also the only natural body builder who deliberately puts weight on and joins his client, so that they could do the journey together. This was particularly useful during lockdown, where Dody found many people suffering with physical and mental wellbeing.
he had achieved everything he could and finances at home were become really tight. “I remember going to work, and being almost broke, but there was still something inside me that felt I needed to do something. So, I decided to coach, and I was doing it for free”. Dody said. “It was really hard. In fact, I recall when at one competition I was on stage and I had one, but I started to cry. Everyone was like, why are you so upset? Are you emotional because you have won? I was like no, it’s because I have no money left. So, I had no money, and my Mrs was so upset because I had so much passion for it that I had lost out financially and falling behind on my mortgage. Then to make matters worse, that same year my wife became really ill. So that had a bad impact, but I had one more show left, which I did and lost. “I started crying, because I just couldn’t
He told us: “You can either go one way, and I went the other and I tried to show people that you can adapt your lifestyle and make a positive outcome out of something bad and sit there thinking the world is going to end. So, I tried to encourage people to do what I did.” The natural, body builder, also helps his clients with their diet. His famous protein kebabs are a big hit among his fans and clients. One of Dody’s best challenges has been his best friend who came to him to lose weight and eventually became a body building champion. Dody’s social media is littered with images of his clients before and after images, with successful weight losses and toned up bodies. Dody has certainly come along way and he credits everything to Tina for taking him under her wing. However, his father remains his inspiration for body building and now he wants to be that fatherly inspiration for everyone else, by helping children and adults, male or female in cleaning up their life, be that physical or mental. So if you think you could do with a bit of Dody magic, then look him up at Dody Building.

POSTGRADUATE STUDENTS FROM LEEDS UNIVERSITY WORKING WITH BRADFORD COUNCIL TO CREATE GREENER CITY BY SHAWNA HEALEY Three MSc students from Leeds University have been working with Bradford Council and Incommunities on research projects which will look at how to build a zero-carbon, greener, cleaner future for the district. Incommunities is one of the largest social housing providers in the UK, formed in 2003 after a stock transfer from Bradford Council. Their main business is to provide and maintain affordable high-quality housing for neighbourhoods across the district. Since 2003 they have invested over £400 million in modernising customer homes and built over 700 homes for rent, shared ownership and outright sale. The students, Bilal Mian, James Ireland, and Samantha Clatworthy are nearing the end of their research projects, with their final reports due to be submitted by the end of August. Mr Mian has been working with Bradford Council on developing a framework to help engage with key stakeholders in the district who could help address the climate crisis. This includes developing an interactive map to track climate action and sustainable development activity in the Bradford district. Mr Mian said: “Once I have completed my MSc, I am hoping to work in industry in a role related to sustainability or the charity/humanitarian sector where I can utilise the skills from both my undergraduate degree in Civil Engineering BEng and my postgraduate MSc in Sustainability and Consultancy.” Mr Ireland is also working with the council, looking at how the authority can meet its target of net-zero carbon emissions by 2038. This target is aimed at reducing the effects of global warming, such as flooding and helping the district to recover from the pandemic with a sustainable economy, reduced fuel poverty, green job opportunities, improved air quality and more active lifestyles. Mr Ireland said: “I hope to identify areas, strategies, and
Image: John Cameron.
Bilal Mian. policies where the council can make substantial progress in reducing their own greenhouse gas emissions by 2030. This will allow the council to be a leader for the whole district's net-zero transition by demonstrating what is possible.” After he completes his studies, James hopes to continue working in the sustainability sector either in a local authority or for a consultancy firm.
Cllr Sarah Ferriby, Portfolio Holder for Healthy People and Places, said: “It’s great to know that we and our partners Incommunities are working to support the studies and future careers of upcoming sustainability and environmental specialists. I am sure we will also benefit greatly from their hard work and knowledge. I wish them all the best for their final research projects and for whatever they do next.” Ms Clatworthy is working with social housing provider Incommunities, investigating the potential for green space on its sites. Ms Clatworth said: “Green spaces are being increasingly recognised as providing important social, environmental, and economic benefits to communities. Currently, Incommunities is developing their Sustainability Strategy 2030 and their Biodiversity and
Green Space Plan. They own and manage 230 hectares of open land vital to achieving their climate and biodiversity net gain targets.” Ms Clatworthy's project will include mapping Incommunities’ land and looking at how to improve and maximize the social and environmental benefits of their current green spaces. Next, Ms Clatworthy hopes to work in a role that involves improving the sustainability of the built environment. She is working towards IEMA (Institute of Environmental Management & Assessment) practitioner status and wants to become certified in BREEAM (Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method), which sets best practice standards for the environmental performance of buildings. Alexis Durrant, Sustainability Manager at Incommunities said: “We have a responsibility to
deliver a sustainable future for our customers and communities and we were delighted to have Samantha join our team for this project. Maximizing the social and environmental benefits of our green spaces is a key part of our future sustainability plans and this work will provide important insights for us for the future.” Professor Alice Owen, who organises the students' MSc Sustainability projects from the University of Leeds, said: “It’s the first time we’ve had students working on such a great range of projects in Bradford, and it shows how the city is tackling sustainability on several fronts and connecting social and environmental issues together. It’s a fantastic experience for the MSc students to deal with real pressures and challenges, and hopefully, they can contribute to progress in the city as well.”

BRIGGATE DEBENHAMS WILL BECOME STUDENT FLATS BY RICHARD BEECHAM Plans to convert the former Debenhams building in Leeds city centre into student flats have been approved in principle by a panel of council decision-makers this week. Plans submitted for the iconic Briggate landmark by Orchard Street Investment Management include the redevelopment of the existing building while also adding a rooftop extension. Members of Leeds City Council’s City Plans Panel called the proposals, which include more than 100 flats and communal spaces as “imaginative”, “sensible” and “interesting”. It followed earlier versions of the plans going before councillors earlier this year, following the closure of Briggate Debenhams. Speaking at a meeting of Leeds City Council’s City Plans Panel, Cllr Dan Cohen (Con) said: “I really liked this application at (preapplication stage) and I still really like this application. I think the thing I like most about it is that it is timely, and it is bringing it into use in a sensible way.” Cllr David Blackburn (Green) added: “This is the way for
Debenhams Leeds the future for some of these city centre buildings. What they are proposing looks really good. “I hope they will let us look round when they finish it because I bet it will be wonderful.”
would be created in the centre of the former department store from the second floor up and cover 240 square metres. A smaller communal roof terrace is also proposed, while
The development will include 124 bed spaces in 107 student flats. Ninety of these will be studio flats, while a further 17 will be duel-occupancy studios, termed “twodios” – effectively one room with two double beds.
Cllr Dan Cohen
It would also mean demolishing the current rooftop extension, which was built in the 1980s. Debenhams closed earlier this year, after the firm was a high profile casualty of the economic hardship caused by the Covid-19 pandemic. The site has been vacant ever since.
Cllr Al Garthwaite (Lab) said: “I think it is an imaginative, interesting proposal, and I am very happy with it.”
Four communal areas are proposed, with a new “courtyard wellness garden”
two lounges, and a study room are also proposed.
Cllr David Blackburn
A report into the proposals by Leeds City Council planning officers stated: “It is considered that the proposal would result in a high quality, appropriate development. The scheme would bring active use to an important historic building and would add to the vibrancy and vitality to
Cllr Al Garthwaite the area and furthering its regeneration.” The proposal was approved in principle by members of the panel, with final details delegated to planning officers. Article by Local Democracy Reporting Service

Divorce, Separation and Your Gold Jewellery As divorce specialists, we’re often asked by clients what happens to their gold jewellery on divorce or separation. Its wedding season again and so many families are celebrating the joys of a couple starting on their own lives together. Wedding halls are being booked, caterers confirmed, outfits selected, and ex-pensive jewellery being bought. It’s hoped that the couple go on to enjoy a long and fruitful marriage with the security of relying on assets such as the family gold should it ever be needed. Unfortunately, in some cases, marriages do not stand the test of time and very soon issues around the joint wealth of the couple come to the fore. As divorce specialists, we’re often asked by clients what happens to their gold jewellery on divorce or separation. The answer may depend on a tiny piece of paper…your receipt! Many cases involv-ing gold and its ownership fail due to the lack of documentary evidence. For many families, jewellery represents heritage, culture and financial independence. In South Asian families, the gifting of gold jewellery to a woman from her family or in-laws on marriage is a longstanding practice. As a South Asian woman, our jumka, bangles, or earrings are more than pieces of jewellery..they remind of us of our mothers and grandmothers before us. Equally, many families on the groom’s side gift jewellery which they consider heirloom pieces and want returned to their family. On divorce, your gold jewellery will become part of the ‘matrimonial pot’. When a couple divorces, their assets such as property, money or jewellery are divided during the financial settlement. There are a few simple steps you can take to avoid disputes about jewellery on divorce. 1. Speak Up. As early as possible, tell your solicitor about any high value items of jewellery; you may want the item returned because it
was a gift or have significant sentimental value; or you may want it added to the matrimonial pot because it was intended for both of you; 2. Keep Your Receipts. Many cases involving gold and its ownership fail due to a lack of docu-mentary evidence. As someone of South Asian heritage, I’m surprised by the number of families gifting their children gold jewellery without keeping any receipts. Clients often remember these expensive gifts much later in a case. Where possible, keep some evidence of your purchase. Make a list of the items you purchases. Take photographs. Keep the receipt. A receipt can make a big difference. It can prove when the jewellery was purchased, the cost of the item and ideally, the weight of the gold. If you have no receipts, get a valuation of the item. 3. Record The Gift. If you’re giving a gift, make a record of the intention. This can be on a piece of paper or a witnessed

MICHELLE PFEIFFER: THERE ARE MORE OPPORTUNITIES FOR ACTRESSES OF MY AGE
Actress Michelle Pfeiffer has spoken about what it's like to be a mature actress in Hollywood now. She says there are many more "interesting roles" than there were a few decades ago. The 63-year-old actress said "Something is changing, there are more opportunities for actresses of my age and for women above 30 maybe not really sexy or leading roles, but interesting." Her latest work includes the comedy-drama "French Exit" where she had to smoke non-nicotine or tar cigarettes to portray her character "Frances Price". She had quit the habit in 1992. "I quit smoking years ago, yet it's always such a joy to pick up again. I have always liked it but the cigarettes I use do not contain nicotine or tar, and are not addictive. Finished the movie, finished the party!" Pfeiffer told an Italian publication IO Donna, reports femalefirst.co.uk.

currently underway in New York City on the 10-episode series, which follows the story of Carrie, Miranda and Charlotte as they navigate the journey from the complicated reality of life and friendship in their 30s to an even more complicated reality of life and friendship in their 50s. Parker, Davis and Nixon are executive producing the series along with Julie Rottenberg, Elisa Zuritsky, John Melfi and Michael Patrick King. Writers include King, Samantha Irby, Rachna Fruchbom, Keli Goff, Julie Rottenberg and Elisa Zaritsky. 'And Just Like That' was officially confirmed at HBO
Max back in January. The fourth series regular from the original series, Kim Cattrall, who played Samantha Jones in the show and subsequent movie sequels was absent. 'Sex and the City' was created by Darren Star based on Candace Bushnell's book. The half-hour show ran for six seasons and 94 episodes on HBO between 1998-2004. It was followed by two feature films in 2008 and 2010. The show revolutionised how women's friendships and women's sexuality - are represented in popular culture. No release date for the show has been announced yet.

A week after 'The Tomorrow War' premiered on Amazon Prime Video, Amazon Studios and Skydance are already in talks to produce a sequel to the time-travelling alien invasion thriller. American actor Chris Pratt, who features in 'The Tomorrow War', is expected to return for the sequel, reported The Hollywood Reporter. The current plan is for director Chris McKay, screenwriter Zach Dean, and stars Yvonne Strahovski, Sam Richardson, Betty Gilpin, Edwin Hodge and J.K. Simmons to all return for a second go-around, but no cast deals are done yet. 'The Tomorrow War' debuted on Amazon Prime Video on July 2 and appears to have garnered strong numbers for the service, according to Pratt. While, like many other streamers, Amazon does not provide viewership numbers, Pratt celebrated its release by stating on
Instagram this week that the film broke records in its first 48 hours and "was the No 1 film in the world." One insider said the movie exceeded all expectations. 'The Tomorrow War' stars Pratt as a high school teacher with a military background who is among those recruited from soldiers from the future, who need people to come forward in time to fight off alien invaders. The project was initially set up at Paramount but shifted to Amazon earlier this year amid the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. Amazon shelled out a hefty USD 200 million for it. Amazon also picked up 'Coming 2 America'. To date, 'Coming 2 America' remains the most-viewed original movie in terms of its opening weekend, according to sources. 'The Tomorrow War' did, however, score opening weekend records in select international markets including Japan and Brazil.

Netflix's much-anticipated movie 'Red Notice' starring Dwayne Johnson, Gal Gadot and Ryan Reynolds is set to premiere on the platform in November this year. Former wrestler and American actor Dwayne took to his Twitter account to announce the news, along with a picture featuring the sizzling cast. "You're officially on notice @Netflix's biggest movie ever #REDNOTICE premieres in your living rooms around the globe on NOV 12 FBI's top profiler. World's most wanted art thief. And the greatest conman the world has never seen...@GalGadot @VancityReynolds #REDNOTICE," he tweeted. 'Red Notice' is an upcoming comedic action thriller drama, written and directed by Rawson Marshall Thurber who had earlier collaborated with Dwayne in super
hit movies like 'DodgeBall', 'We're the Millers', 'Central Intelligence' According to Variety, the movie's tagline teases an unlikely trio for the ages the FBI's top profiler (Dwayne) and two rival criminals the world's most wanted art thief (Gadot) and the greatest conman the world has ever seen (Reynolds). An Interpol issued 'Red Notice' is a global alert to hunt and capture the world's most wanted. But when a daring heist brings together the FBI's top profiler, and two rival criminals, there's no telling what will happen. The shooting for the film was halted in March due to the coronavirus induced lockdown of the entertainment industry and resumed in September. Producers on 'Red Notice' include Thurber, Beau Flynn for FlynnPictureCo and Dwayne Johnson, Dany Garcia and Hiram Garcia for Seven Bucks Productions.
GRETA GERWIG TAPPED TO DIRECT 'BARBIE' STARRING MARGOT ROBBIE Oscar-nominated filmmaker Greta Gerwig is set to direct 'Barbie', the highly-anticipated big-screen take on the iconic Mattel doll's story, starring actor Margot Robbie. As per Variety, Gerwig has been on board the Warner Bros. project since 2019, when the actor and filmmaker signed on to co-write the movie's script with Noah Baumbach. Since then, rumours have swirled that Gerwig had been eyed to direct the project, but the deal wasn't officially done. However, during her cover interview for British Vogue's August 2021 issue, Robbie casually noted that Gerwig's creative vision would extend past the screenplay and into
the director's chair. Sources confirmed the development to Variety. When discussing the movie, the Oscar-nominated actor and producer first acknowledged that Barbie "comes with a lot of baggage! And a lot of nostalgic connections." "But with that come a lot of exciting ways to attack it," she explained. She added, "People generally hear 'Barbie' and think, 'I know what that movie is going to be,' and then they hear that Greta Gerwig is writing and directing it, and they're like, 'Oh, well, maybe I don't'." As for the production status of 'Barbie', Gerwig and Baumbach are currently filming his latest
feature 'White Noise', in which Gerwig stars. After that project wraps, the pair will next turn their attention to the toy tale, which is set to kick off production in early 2022 at Warner Bros.' Leavesden Studios in London. A 2023 theatrical release is planned. News that Gerwig will take on directing duties for
the film might not come as a surprise to some, especially given the actor and filmmaker's success with her breakout features 2017's 'Lady Bird' and 2019's 'Little Women', which racked up a combined 11 Oscar nominations and one win, including a nod for Best Director (making Gerwig one of seven women ever
nominated). In addition to starring in the movie, Robbie will also produce Shutterstock the film, under herImage: LuckyChap Entertainment production banner, which is coming off its own Oscar-winning run for last year's 'Promising Young Woman'. Producers on 'Barbie' also include LuckyChap's Tom Ackerley and Josey McNamara; Mattel's Robbie Brenner and Ynon Kreiz; and David Heyman.

Reportedly, Ananya, who was very close to her grandmother couldn't arrive on time as she had stepped out earlier in the day for a professional commitment. While in 2019, on her grandmother's birthday, Ananya had shared an adorable video of her grandmother in which she can be seen shaking a leg to the 'Jawani song' from 'Student Of The Year 2', the movie with which Ananya debuted in Bollywood. She captioned the post as, "Happy birthday to my forever jawan Dadi!!! 83 and still rocking - and on my song!!! How special is that." My mother on the sets of Gunahon ka Faisla 1988. Happy Happy Mothers Day to you All.”
PRIYADARSHAN'S NEW FILM WITH AKSHAY KUMAR IS 'HAPPENING NEXT YEAR'
When Priyadarshan confirms a new film with Akshay Kumar, it's news, indeed. The veteran filmmaker, box-office wizard and National Award winner, has after all delivered rib-tickling comedies like "Hera Pheri", "Bhool Bhulaiyaa", "Garam Masala" and "Bhagam Bhag" with the Bollywood superstar. Confirming his upcoming collaboration with Akshay, Priyadarshini told IANS "Yes that is happening next year. It was supposed to happen this year but got pushed. We start shooting next year." Quizzed if their new film is a comedy, the filmmaker replied "It will be a comedy film. I don't want to take any more risks. Let me entertain my audience. So far, the films in which we both worked have been very successful. Those were almost 70 per cent humorous films with a nice emotional ending." Before his film with Akshay, Priyan, as he is widely known
to friends and colleagues, is busy readying his new film "Hungama 2" for release. The comedy features Paresh Rawal, Shilpa Shetty Kundra, Meezaan Jaffrey and Pranitha Subhash. The filmmaker clarifies the film is not an extension of his 2004 hit "Hungama". "It is not a continuation of Hungama. It is a different story treated in the same way as Hungama. There are confusions, situations, comedy of errors and slapstick but the plot is completely different. It will be a laugh riot, I believe," he said. Priyadarshan's name is synonymous with entertaining comedy films. What are his secret ingredients? "It is very difficult to make people laugh. It is the most difficult thing to create situations and confusions. Because, the moment it becomes buffoonery, the film will be in bad taste. It should look believable and genuine. Maintaining that balance is
important," he replied. Just like many other films, "Hungama 2" is also releasing on an OTT platform instead of a theatrical release amid the ongoing pandemic. Would he miss the big screen experience? "I wish I could release it in the theatres, sit with the audience and enjoy it. I belong to the old school. I have corrected myself by sitting with the crowd and watching my films, by observing what they like and what they don't like. I am going to miss that learning process," the filmmaker expressed, adding "But even on OTT, everybody from the grandfather to the grandson can sit together and laugh. There is no vulgarity or double meaning in this film. It will be absolutely enjoyable. Comedy films are meant for mass viewing because laughter is contagious." With the pandemic affecting our lives in every possible way, is comedy the need of the hour
for our emotional wellbeing? "We know how the economy is affected, how people have lost their money, lost their jobs. How they are struggling not to go out and staying locked in their homes. What is there to smile about? In these times, I feel a comedy film can be a very good medicine," the director said. Priyadarshan, however, does not feel OTT platforms will replace cinema halls entirely. "Definitely OTT is popular but films like Titanic, Baahubali or Avatar, which are meant for the big screen -- you can't watch these on your phone. You can't
enjoy the visuals. Another reason is, in our country, the cheapest entertainment for a common man, especially the middle class, is taking out the family to the cinema. Also, the pleasure of going to the theatre with your friends and family, you cannot get that pleasure by sitting at home and watching the film on your phone. So, theatres will survive all over the world despite the great impact of OTT platforms," he opined. Priyadarshan's new directorial "Hungama 2" is slated to release on Disney+ Hotstar on July 23.

DILIP KUMAR:
The legacy of Bollywood's 'Tragedy King'
Bollywood's tragedy king Dilip Kumar breathed his last on 7 July. The 98-year-old actor passed away due to various age-related ailments. The multiple-award-winning actor's career spanned over more than five decades and during the golden era of Hindi cinema, Dilip Kumar charmed millions of hearts with his performance in more than 65 films. He was also popularly known as the First Khan of Bollywood. Born as Muhammad Yusuf Khan in Peshawar, Pakistan, he began his acting career with the screen name, Dilip Kumar. Dilip Kumar holds the record for winning the maximum number of Filmfare awards. He was the inaugural recipient of the award and won the best actor Filmfare Award eight times. In his five-decade-long career, he contributed to Hindi cinema in different ways, including the introduction of the method acting technique. His first few films, including his Bollywood debut 'Jwar Bhata', which was released in 1944, could not strike a chord with the audiences. But his scintillating performance in 'Jugnu' in the year of Indian Independence, 1947, won hearts, making the film his first major hit. Born on December 11, 1922, Dilip Kumar was one among 12 siblings. The yesteryear actor completed his schooling from the Barnes School, Deolali, Nashik, where he grew up in a mixed neighbourhood.
His childhood friend Raj Kapoor, too, later became his colleague in the film industry. After running a sandwich stall at Pune's Army Club in 1943, Dilip Kumar wanted to establish a business in Mumbai to contribute to the household income and help his father. His father was a fruit merchant and a landlord who owned orchards in Peshawar and Deolali near Nashik. But fate had other plans at the Churchgate Station in Mumbai, Dilip Kumar met Dr Masani, who introduced him to actor Devika Rani, then owner of the renowned film studio in Malad, Bombay Talkies, which has now been shut down. Earlier, Dilip Kumar used to help in the scripting and story-writing department because of his proficiency in the Urdu language. It was upon Devika Rani's request that Muhammed Yusuf Khan changed his professional name to Dilip Kumar. He then embarked on his acting career with Bombay Talkies in the movie 'Jwar Bhata.' In his autobiography 'The Substance and the Shadow', he recalled, "I had no clue what acting in front of a
camera was. It was something to be studied, learned, and practised." During his stint at Bombay Talkies, he met actor Ashok Kumar, who was a star back then. From Ashok Kumar, he learnt that acting was not about being theatrically bombastic, which was the popular trend in those times. After 'Jugnu', he starred in a couple of more hits -- 'Shaheed' and 'Mela'-- before finally landing his breakthrough role in Mehboob Khan's 'Andaz'. The actor was known for his careful selection of scripts and it was evident why Dilip Kumar was more than just an actor, writer, filmmaker, poet, or philosopher. His erudition helped him to stand out and evolve a new method of acting. The dignified silences, the thoughtful pauses, and his poetic dialogue delivery were hallmarks of his understated style. The 1949 film 'Andaz' saw Dilip Kumar, starring alongside two other golden stars of that era - Raj Kapoor and Nargis. Although he had some major hits in the 1940s, it was in

the 1950s that he tasted real success for the first time with a string of hits 'Babul,' 'Devdas,' 'Hulchul,' 'Yahudi,' 'Daag,' 'Sairat,' 'Naya Daur,' and 'Deedar'. These were the classic tragedy films that gave Dilip Kumar the title of 'The Tragedy King.' Though he was a teetotaller himself, in 'Devdas' he captured the essence of the self-destructive man driven by unrequited love to become a drunkard. He portrayed the grief of his character Devdas, through his hazy eyes and eloquent silences. It was the social drama 'Daag' that won the legendary star his first ever Filmfare Award in the main category of the lead actor, also making him the inaugural recipient of the award at the time of its inception in 1954. After that, he won the prestigious award several times and till date continues to hold the record for the maximum Filmfare wins with his eight Black Lady trophies. He shared the position with superstar Shah Rukh Khan who also has eight Filmfare Awards to his credit. Though tragedy movies brought him great success on the professional front, Dilip Kumar got so involved in the characters he portrayed that it affected his mental health giving him bouts of depression. After that, on the suggestion of a psychiatrist, he went on to do a few light-hearted roles. He started with Mehboob Khan's 'Aan', which was also his first film shot in technicolour. Though the actor tried to work in different genres to do away with the tag of 'The Tragedy King', his epic portrayals in these films have been so etched in the minds of his fans that he is to date remembered with this title only. He played several lighter roles before finally landing the lead role of Prince Salim in the big-budget magnum opus 'Mughal-e-Azam' in 1960 which went on to be re-released in the full colour format in 2004, 44 years after its original release. In 1961, the late actor also became a film producer, bankrolling and starring in the film 'Ganga Jamuna' alongside actor Vyjayanthimala, though he did not produce any other film thereafter. The movie, which itself had elements borrowed from 'Mother India', later became the precursor for several other films, where one brother becomes an outlaw and the other is a policeman. Dilip Kumar excelled in his performance as a
rustic villager who was forced to become a dacoit due to circumstances. Made in rural dialect, the film retained those flavours in its music and lyrics. He delivered a few more terrific portrayals in the 1960s, which include his dual role in 'Ram Aur Shyam,' Waheeda Rehman starrer 'Aadmi,' and superhit flick 'Sunghursh', in which he again starred opposite Vyjayanthimala. The year 1966 marked the legendary actor's marriage with the then Bollywood diva Saira Banu who was 22 years younger than him. Before marrying Saira Banu, Dilip Kumar had been in a relationship with the queen of elegance Madhubala. He was also linked with Bollywood beauties like Kamini Kaushal and Vyjayanthimala. Lovingly known as Dilip Saab, he was one of the most sought-after celebrities by women. It is said his popularity amongst women was so immense that they used to stand in front of his car, wishing to be run over. On the day of his engagement, a girl from the industry, who was his supposed girlfriend, reportedly took sleeping pills. Dilip Kumar had to make her understand that he was in love with Saira Banu. It was only after she was pacified that he returned to his engagement ceremony. After several back-to-back successes, Dilip Kumar went through a career slump in the 1970s, with only a couple of movies like 'Bairaag' and 'Gopi' performing well at the box office. In 'Gopi' he starred alongside his real-life wife, Saira Banu. Dilip Kumar then took a five-year-long hiatus from films, lasting from the year 1976 to 1981. It was in 1981 that he made a comeback with the multi-starrer flick 'Kranti', playing a central role among the ensemble cast, which included names like Shashi Kapoor, Shatrughan Sinha, Manoj Kumar and Hema Malini. After playing the titular role of a revolutionary fighting for the independence of India, he then starred in the 1982 'Vidhata' directed by Subhash Ghai with stars like Shammi Kapoor, Sanjay Dutt and Sanjeev Kumar among the cast. Featuring with Amitabh Bachchan in the 1982 superhit 'Shakti' directed by Ramesh Sippy, he won his eighth and last Filmfare Award for the best actor. His next film, the 1984 social crime drama 'Mashal' directed by Yash Chopra was a failure at the box office, though his performance was critically acclaimed. Later he also appeared alongside Rishi Kapoor in the 1984 'Duniya' and with Jeetendra in 'Dharm Adhikari',
SEVEN
which was released in 1986. In 1986, he again collaborated with Subhash Ghai for the ensemble action movie 'Karma'. He was paired for the first time with the veteran actor Nutan, though they had earlier collaborated three decades ago in an incomplete film named 'Shikwa'. He was again paired opposite Nutan for the 1989 'Kanoon Apna Apna'. Dilip starred in the 1991 film 'Saudagar' along with veteran actor Raaj Kumar, which later turned out to be his last phenomenal success at the box office and also his last collaboration with director Subhash Ghai. In recognition of his contribution to the film industry for over five decades, he was conferred the Filmfare Lifetime Achievement Award in 1994. In the same year, he was honoured with the prestigious Dadasaheb Phalke Award and was later conferred the Padma Vibhushan in 2015. To mark an official comeback for the actor, film producer Sudhakar Bokade announced the movie 'Kalinga' in 1992, but the film got delayed for several years and was eventually shelved. His last appearance in the movies was in the film titled 'Qila' which was released in 1998. After his acting career came to an end, Dilip was nominated to the upper house of parliament through the Indian National Congress. He served as a Rajya Sabha MP from Maharashtra from 2000 to 2006. Besides acting and politics, the star has also undertaken humanitarian work. While serving as a Rajya Sabha MP, he used his MPLAD fund for improving the gardens of Bandra Fort and Bandstand Promenade. Dilip Kumar was a flame carrier who took Bollywood to heights it had never been before. Living many lives in a lifetime, his persona could never be replaced by anyone else. Poetry and poise are the words that are synonymous with the name Dilip Kumar. No other actor has spent such a long life in the public eye and yet retained an everlasting positive image in the mind of the audiences. Whether it was his alleged love affairs with Madhubala and Kamini Kaushal, his first marriage, or other controversies like the Nishan-E- Imtiaz award (Pakistan's highest civilian award) in 1993, which even raised questions about his patriotism, he handled all of that with grace and maturity. One of the early stars of Bollywood, he rose to a level of prominence never achieved in Indian cinema before. A role model for many, a star, a legend, and the king of the golden era of cinema, Dilip Kumar has left behind a legacy for many acting enthusiasts to enjoy and learn from. The news of his demise has left a void in the hearts of many, including several Bollywood celebs of yesteryears and the present generation. Bollywood has most certainly lost a legend.

build enough social homes. Without access to safe and secure housing, thousands of families are living in temporary accommodation. Too many others are forced to sleep on the streets and some of them die there. The shortage of social homes has fuelled the growth of the
private rental sector. A lack of regulation means that private renters must navigate a minefield of sky-high rents, poor conditions and the threat of unfair eviction. Too many people are living in poor quality homes that they can barely afford. They’re often too afraid to
complain and feel like they have to put up with bad conditions. And life is made even more difficult by a welfare system that simply doesn’t provide enough support to people when they’re struggling. This is the housing emergency and this is what we’re up against.

ARFAN HANIF ANNOUNCED AS NEW CEO FOR MENTAL HEALTH CHARITY TOUCHSTONE Arfan Hanif has worked for the charity since 2012 after taking on a temporary role
“The fact that Mr Hanif began his journey with Touchstone as a service user in 2012 to now becoming the CEO also fills me with love and pride. Mr Hanif is proof positive of Touchstone’s inclusion and service user leadership in practice. Service Users are at the heart of all we do and Mr Hanif will live that value, alongside all Touchstone colleagues, for a very long time to come.”
BY SHAWNA HEALEY Touchstone’s operations director, Arfan Hanif, has been appointed to the role of Chief Executive Officer (CEO) following the departure of Alison Lowe. Mr Hanif originally started at Touchstone on a temporary contract as a community development worker in late 2012. He quickly demonstrated his leadership abilities and was recruited to the senior management team just nine months later. Touchstone aims to secure the rights and entitlements of the people they work with and for. They aim to make the cities work in West Yorkshire more culturally competent and better able to meet the needs of those vulnerable people who live there. The organisation was born out of an identified need for friendship and community in South Leeds in 1982. A Social Worker, Sylvia Landells, and CPN, John Clare, saw that large numbers of vulnerable people were left isolated and distressed out of hours and at weekends, so they set up a “weekend club” which grew into Touchstone. More than 30 years later, they

Mr Hanif said: “I am honoured and privileged to be appointed CEO of Touchstone, an organisation whose values are so aligned to my own. I am especially humbled considering my personal journey of travelling through this country’s institutionalised mental health pathways where my freedom and dignity were taken away from me. “I am not alone and much too often many mental health service users especially those from disadvantaged communities are institutionalised, stigmatised and categorised as a diagnosis which further compounds health inequality outcomes. from January to June 2021 being under lockdown restrictions, there were 653 noise complaints about parties.
The rate of complaints grew from just under 20 complaints made every night before the Covid-19 pandemic, to nearly 32.
Due to the changing timeframes and ways noise complaints are reported, the latest figures were not able to be directly compared with previous years.
Complaints about loud or annoying music form the majority of complaints, with 2,499 of the total number, while “shouting” (731) and “banging” (351) also featured in the complaints. Despite the majority of the period
However, in the period between October 1, 2019 and March 31, 2020, only 3,636 out of hours noise complaints were made, a rate of just under 20 complaints per day. Leeds City Council was asked to comment on the figures but did not do so. The council’s own website stated: “If you call our out of hours number, we will discuss your complaint with you and decide how serious the noise is. We will take down your details and try to arrange for one of our teams to visit. “If we’re able to visit the site, we will ask for people to reduce their noise or end their event if it’s safe to do so. The person making the noise may receive a fine.

EURO CUP: ITALY GOALKEEPER GIANLUIGI DONNARUMMA NAMED PLAYER OF THE TOURNAMENT Italy goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma clinched the player of the tournament award following Azzurri’s win in the Euro Cup at Wembley Stadium on Sunday Donnarumma, 22 but with 33 caps to his name already, crowned his tournament in style on Sunday, helping the Azzurri to their second title with two penalty saves in the shoot-out triumph over England. He was a mainstay between the posts for Italy
Roberto Mancini opted to give Salvatore Sirigu a runout. Donnarumma played 719 minutes at the tournament, more than any other player. Donnarumma - and Italy - did not concede in the group stage, letting in a goal for the first time in the round of 16 against Austria. That was the first goal they had shipped in more than 1,000 minutes. Donnarumma had also made a crucial save in the penalty shoot-out
of the Tournament. The 18-year-old had won just four senior caps prior to the tournament but missed only one minute of La Roja’s campaign, going off at the end of extra time in the quarter-final against Switzerland - which Spain went on to win on penalties. According to UEFA, Pedri received widespread acclaim for his majestic performances, particularly in the semi-final loss to Italy

Djokovic Wimbledon 2021 final
World number one Serbian tennis player Novak Djokovic on Sunday won his sixth Wimbledon title. With this win, Djokovic now has 20 Grand Slams to his name, and he is now equal with Swiss tennis maestro Roger Federer and Spanish player Rafael Nadal. With this win, Djokovic has won three Grand Slams this year - the Australian Open, French Open and now the Wimbledon.
The top-seed would now look to end the year on a high by winning the last Grand Slam - the US Open. In the finals of Wimbledon 2021, Djokovic defeated Italy’s Matteo Berrettini 6-7, 6-4, 6-4, 6-3 here at the Centre Court. The entire match lasted for three hours and 24 minutes. In the final, the first set between Djokovic and Berrettini went back and forth and it stood level at 6- 6 with neither one of them
looking to give away an inch. In the end, the Italian Berrettini went on to win the first set 7-6. The 34-year-old Djokovic made a strong comeback in the second set, winning it 6-4. As a result, the match was set to at least go to the fourth set. Carrying his momentum forward, Djokovic won the third set 6-4 and he was just one more set away from capturing his sixth Wimbledon title. The Serbian did not waste any time and he did not let the opportunity go, and as a result, he won the fourth set and as a result, he won the match. Ashleigh Barty the day before was crowned the Wimbledon women’s champion after she defeated Karolina Pliskova in the summit clash. This was the first Wimbledon win for Barty and her second Grand Slam win.

WHAT STOKES, ENGLAND HAVE ACHIEVED AGAINST PAKISTAN IS INCREDIBLE: MORGAN England skipper Eoin Morgan is impressed with his team’s performance in the ongoing ODI series against Pakistan. Last week, three England players and four members of the backroom staff tested positive for coronavirus, and as a result, the management was forced to pick a completely new squad. England then picked a whole new squad with all-rounder Ben Stokes leading the side for the series against Pakistan as the main team had to isolate. The new squad defeated Pakistan in the first two ODIs to clinch the series 2-0. Moreover, with no Jos Buttler and Jofra Archer in the squad, Morgan lavished praise on the England team for the impressive show following their thumping win over Pakistan on Saturday. “15 of the current squad in isolation. Buttler and

Eoin Morgan Archer injured. What @ benstokes38 and the team have achieved is incredible. Looking forward to watching the next game!” Morgan tweeted. In the second ODI, Hasan Ali collected his fourth five-wicket haul but his sublime efforts went in vain following a below-par top-order batting display by Pakistan. Chasing 248, Pakistan got off to a bad start and the side lost four wickets with just 53 runs on the board. Imam-ul-Haq (1), Babar Azam (19), Fakhar Zaman (10), and Mohammad
Rizwan (5) were all sent back cheaply and Pakistan was left in a spot of bother. Saud Shakeel and Sohaib Maqsood put on 33 runs for the fifth wicket, but as soon as Pakistan’s innings started to come on track, Maqsood (19) lost his wicket to Craig Overton, reducing Pakistan to 86/5. Shadab Khan (21) and Faheem Ashraf (1) were also not able to stay at the crease for a long haul, and as a result, Pakistan was left staring down the barrel at 118/7 and the visitors still needed 130 runs for the win. The left-handed Saud fought a lone battle and ended up as a topscorer with a gritty 56 (4x4), while Hasan Ali entertained an almost full house by clubbing three sixes and two fours in a 17-ball 31. Shadab Khan chipped in with a 20-ball 21 before Pakistan was folded for 195.
SPORTS COPA AMERICA: NEYMAR HUGS MESSI AFTER ARGENTINA WIN; FANS GO GAGA OVER SWEET GESTURE Brazil might have lost the Copa America final against Argentina, but striker Neymar’s gesture after the match has won over social media and he is being applauded for being a perfect friend even when he had to face a loss. Angel Di Maris’s strike helped Argentina defeat Brazil 1-0 in the finals of Copa America on Sunday (local time). With this win, Lionel Messi recorded his first victory in a major international tournament. After the match concluded, Neymar met Messi and the duo embraced each other. Messi and Neymar have been long-time friends as they shared the same dressing room while
playing for Spanish club Barcelona. The official Twitter handle of Copa America shared the pictures and captioned the post as “Respecto. Ney Leo.” Since the post was made on social media, it has now gone viral and many users have praised Neymar for being a perfect friend and realising what the win actually meant to Messi. Angel Di Maria scored the lone goal in the massive final as Argentina registered a 1-0 win over Brazil. Maria’s netted a goal in the 22nd minute to ensure Messi ended his drought of an international crown Argentina with Copa America final win. Messi was seven years old when
Argentina last lifted the coveted Copa America trophy. Maria’s strike in the tournament’s final gave Messi or his fans the much-needed relief. Whenever the debate erupted between Messi or any other big player, football pundits always highlighted how the Argentina captain was not able to reap rewards at the big stage. Messi had won everything at the club level, both in personal and team capacity, but missed a major title with Argentina apart from a 2008 gold medal in the Olympics. For now and at least sometimes there will not be people questioning Messi’s legacy as he has finally won his first
trophy with the senior national team. The ‘icon’ Messi would only want Argentina to carry forward the momentum to the FIFA World Cup in 2022. Messi had a hand in nine of the 12 goals Argentina scored during the tournament and was also named the Best Player of the Tournament along with Brazil’s Neymar who had scored two goals and registered three assists himself. With this Copa victory, Argentina secured their 15th continental title, drawing them level with Uruguay as the holders of the most wins. La Albiceleste is joint top with their la Plata neighbours Uruguay while Brazil is in third with 9 wins.

TOKYO OLYMPICS: TESTING POSITIVE FOR COVID-19 IN BOXING FINAL WILL LAND OPPONENT GOLD If any participant tests positive for Covid-19 in the finals of the boxing event in the upcoming Tokyo Olympics, then the opponent will receive a gold medal, and the Covid-19 participant will be facilitated with the silver medal. This specification has been made clear in the Tokyo Olympics’ Sport-Specific Regulations (SSR). The Regulations have been jointly formed by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and the International Federations (IFs). “In Boxing, the athlete that cannot compete will not be disqualified and will be marked as DNS in case they cannot start the event and will be treated as Walk-Over once the competition has started,” as per the regulations. “If an athlete is no longer able to compete the opponent will receive a bye and progress to the next round. If an athlete cannot compete in the final due to COVID-19 the bout will
not go ahead and the athlete who can no longer compete will receive the silver medal and the opponent will be awarded the gold medal to protect the safety of the athletes,” it added. Regulations regarding wrestling
state “In Wrestling, if an athlete is not able to compete due to Covid-19 the athlete will not be disqualified and will be marked as DNS. The opponent receives a bye into the next round.” “In case the athlete has reached the final and is no
longer able to compete due to COVID-19 the athlete eliminated in the respective semi-final will fill the vacant place and compete in the final,” it added. The regulations also clarify about someone in the shooting
event testing positive for Covid-19. “In shooting, if an athlete/team is not able to compete due to COVID-19, they will not be disqualified and will be marked as DNS. There will be no change to the competition format or groupings.” “The events take place over one day with the exception of the shotgun events, however, all athletes compete on both days and therefore the results of the daily COVID-19 test will determine if an athlete can start otherwise the event will go ahead with one athlete less. For the mixed team event, in case an athlete can no longer take part in the event, but the NOC has another athlete onsite, the NOC can replace an athlete team member,” the regulations added. The Tokyo Olympics will go on from July 23-August 8. The mega event was slated to go ahead last year, but it had to be postponed due to the pandemic.

EURO 2020: ENGLAND’S DREAMS DASHED WITH ITALY WIN, BUT NATION STILL PROUD OF GARETH SOUTHGATE’S TEAM After reaching the finals the Three Lions were beaten by their arch-rival in penalties. The trophy is not coming home but will go to Rome. Luke Shaw got Gareth Southgate’s side off to the perfect start after two minutes but Leonardo Bonucci’s equaliser in the second half tied a game in which chances came at a premium. Moments became more tense as both sides went to penalties. Jordan Pickford did his best in the shootout with some heroic goalkeeping before Marcus Rashford and Jadon Sancho missed, having both been brought on to take a penalty. Bukayo Saka then missed the decisive spot kick to give Italy the trophy. England captain Harry Kane says his side gave everything they could speaking to BBC Sport post-match. “The boys couldn’t have given more. Penalties obviously, it’s the worst feeling in the world when you lose,” Kane said. “It’s been a fantastic tournament and we should hold our heads up high but of course it’s going to hurt now, it’s going to hurt for a while. We’re on the right track and we’re building and hopefully we can progress from this next year.” “We’re playing against a very good side. We
got off to the perfect start. Maybe dropped a little bit too deep. Sometimes when you score that early it’s easy to try and soak up the pressure and try hold onto that and that’s probably what happened. They had a lot of the ball, they had a lot of possession but to be fair we looked fairly in control. We didn’t create too many chances then obviously they got their breakthrough from the set-piece and then after that it was probably a 50/50. “In extra-time we grew into the game, had a few half-chances then obviously penalties is penalties. We went through our process. The boys did everything they could, it just wasn’t our night.” England fans may not have a victory to celebrate but they certainly have a team to be proud of. England manager Gareth Southgate has admitted England’s penalty shootout takers were down to him. Speaking to BBC Sport, Southgate revealed: “We prepared as well as we could for the [penalty shootout], that’s my responsibility, I chose the guys to take the kicks. In the end, we weren’t quite able to see the game through in the normal regulation time. On handing the fifth penalty to 19-year-old Bukayo Saka, he said: “That’s my decision
to give him that penalty, that’s totally my responsibility. It’s not him or Marcus or Jadon, we work together, we work through them in training, that’s the order we came to. That’s my call as a coach.” On Marcus Rashford and Jadon Sancho, he lamented: “That’s always the risk that you run, but they’ve been by far the best and to get all those attacking players on the pitch you have to do it late. It was a gamble, but if we gambled early, we may have lost the game in normal time anyway. We did start well, I think our system worked well against theirs.” Despite the result, credit goes to Gareth Southgate, who brought his team to the finals after 55 years. He took charge of the team after their exit in the Euro 2016 quarter finals following a defeat to unfancied Iceland. Southgate, a former defender, was the unlikeliest contender to take charge. He was known more for his failures - missing the penalty in the 1996 Euro semifinal against Germany and coaching a Middlesbrough side to relegation and getting sacked from the position. He also coached the England under-21 that failed to do much. However, things at the senior level have changed under him. England reached the semi-final of
the 2018 World Cup - their first in a major international tournament since Euro 1996 and now they were on the cusp of winning their first-ever Euro. Southgate isn’t known for his win-at-allcost attitude and as someone who only wants to see his players win on the football field. He has encouraged his players to take up social issues like ‘taking the knee’, which is a stance against racial abuse. He is also known to be an empathetic person, someone who can take time off from the delirium of victory and visit the opposition camp to console players as he did to Mateus Uribe, a Colombian player, whose missed penalty had handed England a place in the quarter-finals of 2018 World Cup. Former Germany player Philipp Lahm has been effusive in his praise of him. “Southgate has managed to convey to his highly-paid stars that they are not only playing football. He lets them take on social responsibility. That creates an identity,” Lahm had written in The Guardian. “Second, he has made his team believe in his plan, which is nobody will score against us easily or quickly.” Whatever the result, we are proud of England for bringing about much hope and uniting us all as a nation. We win together and we lose together.
