LOCKDOWN AND ITS IMPACT ON THE BUSINESS

Front cover story cont’d... There has been some kind of movement whatever the situation is but this has been the first time that the whole world is at standstill. Right now the time we publish this article, 2.6 billion out of 7.8 billion world population is in absolute lockdown; i.e. 1/3rd of the total population and the other 2/3rd is in partial lockdown. Not only does this come to us at a huge economic cost but also a moral and social cost. The businesses at the small and medium level are the ones that are suffering the most. With little or no capital and cash in hand, it has become a situation of deep concern for the authorities to compensate for the losses and the survival of the bourgeois. Looking at it from a different perspective; Businesses are still spending on the salaries and the other fixed expenses like interest on loan and mortgages; while on the other hand no income is being generated. This situation is what we term here as double grinding - losing money on both ends. According to the United Nations (UN), the slowdown in the global economy caused by the coronavirus outbreak is likely to cost at least $1 trillion in 2020. The repercussion faced will last till 2022, study says. The major Stock Exchanges in the world saw their biggest one day fall ever since its inception. Stock Indices like FTSE, Dow Jones, S&P 500 Index, NASDAQ Composite, Nikkei 225, and BSE Sensex are all struggling to gain momentum after a major blowback from multiple di-

rections (lockdown playing the major part). The UN has also stated that the World economy will go into recession with the likely exception of India and China. While on the one side Bank of America says the recession is already here: ‘Jobs will be lost, wealth will be destroyed’ on the other hand job losses could go as high as 47 million, according to a Federal Reserve estimate. The other facet to the game could come

from this unemployment which might go unnoticed. These unemployed people are no more an asset to the economy and thus reduce the overall spending, causing a loss of potential business for all the small, medium and large enterprises. Although UK lockdown could be relaxed in weeks, says top govt. adviser but keeping the 6-month long lockdown in mind, the country could lose all its year’s business with ham-

pered revival and growth in the coming years. Australia as a country can be put forth as a perfect example of how grave the lockdown caused by the pandemic is – Australia has never been in a state of recession for the past 28 years, even surviving the 2008 global recession but now it is struggling to keep up its economy and business alive. Overall the lockdown has created an omnipresent impact on the business all

over the world. Time, a precious jewel is getting wasted with no value addition to the world economy. According to the Fitch Rating Agency - the world economic activity could contract by 1.9 % (with Europe up to 4%) leaving a mere insignificant growth for the financial year 2020. The coronavirus as a pandemic has destroyed the business for all the people like a blow from a sword.

Community Strength, Link FM, ‘A Breath of Fresh Air ‘ By Iffat Yasmin

HOW TO HANDLE STRESS DURING CORONAVIRUS

Stress is many a time used as a social indicator of uneasiness and personal resistance from certain objects, places, persons, or environment. Environmental anxiety is what some people are facing in the current situation. The COVID-19, which is caused by SARS 2 (SEVERE ACUTE RESPIRATORY SYNDROME), has created an atmosphere of panic and chaos in the minds of people all around the world. With over 208 countries and territories being affected around the world, the pandemic has become more than we ever imagined. With the current situation of the virus, which has a fatality rate of nearly 5% becoming anxious is typical. The stress is bursting out for various reasons be it social or financial. Due to the lockdown people sure are missing out on potential opportunities; Financial instability for the working class, Education for students, life for healthcare workers and coronavirus positive patients and more. Considering such a huge situation, governments, organizations, hospitals, volunteers around the world trying hard to create a positive and optimistic atmosphere to ease down the stress of the public by providing the right set of information, safety measures, and providing necessary support in all possible ways. As communities across the globe feel the mental, physical and financial pressure of the ‘Stay At Home‘, social distancing measures, a volunteer- based community radio station operating from the premises of Pakistan Muslim Centre is witnessing global appreciation and acknowledgement for the role it is playing in addressing social isolation and loneliness. The radio station, spearheaded under Link FMs Operations Manager ( Mr Hafees Rehman ) has focused all its efforts in reaching out to vulnerable sectors of the community. With novel ideas such as the diary of day, your recipe, or story of the day, to live telephone shows, the radio station creates ample opportunities to entertain and socially engage people who are under self isolatiion. More interestingly despite the increase in use of social mobile apps and the nation’s religious viewing of televised news broadcasts, this medium of radio has proven to be a great favourite amongst local communities who feel Link FM brings with it a more closer to home touch. Mr Hussain an 83 year from the Darnall area of Sheffield recently shared his appreciation. “I’ve been self isolating for three weeks now. I’m anxious and concerned and don’t know what’s happening. When I hear people telephoning and sharing their stories I feel stronger, knowing I’m not solely sailing this lonely ship. The opportunities given to everybody to telephone in to share their experiences and survival tips make this station a truly mentally nourishing medium of information “. The station has meticulously allowed for routes of mental escapism

by bringing encouraging local stories and opening creative opportunities whereby guest are encouraged to come live on air to showcase their talents. Whether that is storytelling, poetry corners or cooking tips, Link FM is helping families and communities stay stronger and safe. Link FM’s Operations Manager Hafeas Rehman believes “with over 9 million people in the UK, (that’s almost a fifth of the population being classed as lonely, with a further - over half 51% aged 75 or over living alone, domestic violence on the rise, child helpline being inundated with calls, Samaritans reporting a substantive rise in people feeling the financial pressure thus raising concerns of peoples mental wellbeing, there are has never been a stronger case for radio stations to up their game. We are following the orthodox routes by inviting specialist guests on the show which helps signpost people but we are also providing people with a window to their local community by firstly encouraging local stories and local news, with a focus on the community hero effort. Secondly we are providing mental escapism opportunities so people can detach themselves from the barrage of worries and challenges corona virus is posing. Link Fm which broadcasts on 96.7FM and is one of many successful projects run by the charity Pakistan Muslim Centre has been operating for several years and broadcasts locally, nationally and internationally in multiple languages and has managed to pool all its resources to assist the local community during the current crisis period. Last week alone the radio station and the Pakistan Muslim Centre were able

to assist several members of the vulnerable community, including more notably a domestic violence victim who was left homeless. Sharing positive stories has resulted in the station witnessing a rise in community spirit and positivity with a number of people looking for volunteering opportunities. With the fast approaching month of Ramadan, (a month where Muslims across the globe will fast from sunrise to sunset), the rising in community tensions in the Page Hall area of Sheffield where pockets of communities have been accused of failing to respect social distance protocols, the radio station feels it has a much larger role to play in keeping communities safe. Chairman of the Pakistan Muslim Centre and CEO of Link FM, Muhammad Ali states “There are great challenges ahead because of how corona virus (covid19) safety measures affect us all. People are told they cannot go to places of worship, cannot visit family, there is a breeze of confusion and uncertainly, we want to use the medium of radio to help people understand their individual responsibilities and how they can keep themselves safe. We want to most importantly keep people mentally strong. If there has ever been an absolute concrete case for everybody to pool together to keep each other strong during these testing times it is now.” The station is now asking for anyone interested to contact them, “whether you have a positive story to share, a talent to showcase or want to participate on one of the shows we would love to hear from you. “ Anyone interested should contact Link Fm on 075930 92737 or email info@linkfm.org.

Here are some of the ways that we’ve mentioned to help yourself: Take proper sleep - Most of the time we ignore the fact that a proper sleep of at least 8 hours is necessary for the proper functioning of our brain and body. A drained out mind increases the stress level and thereby you feel more isolated. So a proper nap regardless of the situations outside is a way to healthy living. Meditation - Yoga, and meditation if done, would help you overcome the stress as you will be more connected and involved with yourself. You will be able to see an altogether different version of yourself where you are more diligent and confident. Create plans for future - See this as an opportunity to create a resourceful activity for the future, remember - your plans today decide whether you’re an asset or a liability in the future. Take out some family time - All we do in our life is to support our family and on the other hand, it’s the family that receives our least time. You could educate your family about the benefits of staying indoors, not falling prey to depression and anxiety.

liveroo. The fast-casual restaurant chain’s 30,000 free meal contribution will be made available where both German Doner Kebab and Deliveroo provide coverage, and where there is demand from NHS hospitals. Meals will be available over time as Deliveroo works with individual hospitals to identify where need is greatest. Will Shu, CEO and founder of Deliveroo, said: “German Doner Kebab were the first to contribute to this important initiative and we are incredibly grateful for their generosity. “Those in the NHS working night and day to save lives are the real heroes of this crisis, and we want to do our small part to support them and the vulnerable who aren’t able to leave their homes.

German Doner Kebab is partnering with food-delivery company Deliveroo to provide 30,000 free meals to frontline NHS workers and vulnerable people who are unable to leave their homes. Deliveroo, the UK’s leading food delivery company, is set to make 500,000 meals available for free to NHS workers. German Doner Kebab has six restaurants in the Midlands with three in Birmingham and one each in Coventry, Leicester and Walsall. It is backing the campaign as part of its ongoing commitment to support communities and frontline staff during the Coronavirus response. The growing brand’s signature dish ‘The Original German Doner Kebab’ has become one of the country’s most ordered dishes in the past month, according to De-

Thousands of foreign NHS workers to have UK visas extended for one year The home department will extend the work visas of NHS doctor, nurses and paramedics. The measure was announced by Home secretary Priti Patel. The visas will be extended for a year free of charge so that the doctors ,nurses and paramedics staff can focus on their duty in fighting against corona virus. The extension applies to around 2,800 medical staff from overseas ,whose residency document expire on or before 1st October. In order to give them

peace of mind to fight this deadly virus , this extension will also apply to their family members. The extension will be automatic so that the medical staff will not be burdened with the task of paper work at a time when they are battling with the disease. The home ministry decided to automatically extend visas. So that the NHS workers do not get distracted by the visa process. NHS workers are playing a leading role to tackle Corona virus thus we owe them a great deal of gratitude for all what they do” said by Ms. Patel.

Imran Sayed, GDK CEO, said:

We have been completely overwhelmed and inspired by the incredible dedication and courage shown by NHS staff during the Covid-19 crisis. Our commitment to provide 30,000 free meals to NHS workers is a big gesture of support from the GDK family and recognises their super-human efforts in an already overwhelmed NHS service. We stand beside them during these unprecedented times and will continue to do our best to provide valuable help to the selfless heroes that are saving lives and helping vulnerable people in communities throughout the country.

The Covid-19 lockdown is a death sentence for many women. Not from the virus, but from being stuck indoors with a violent partner

The outbreak of Covid-19 and the subsequent lockdown made many women more prone to fall prey to their violent partner’s anger. It has been just a week since the lockdown is imposed on UK families, nine people have already been killed and it is sadly expected to exceed more in coming days. Although our daily routine has been shut and everything is closed but it is not the case with domestic violence. In fact, it has been increased many folds. Lockdown initiated a horrible spate of domestic violence which left nine people dead across Britain. The recent case involves a family living in Sussex, having four members consisting of the builder and his partner with two daughter aged five and three. Two other men have been charged the murder of their wives. According to a UK-based author of The Devil At Home, Rachel Williams who is a campaigner of domestic violence and a victim because she was too, shot by her husband, puts forward her fear of further expected violence, considering this just a beginning. She says; “The lockdown is hard for everyone, but if you’re a victim of abuse, it’s hell. You get no downtime,” “You’re imprisoned with your captor 24/7, with no respite, when they could be in work, the pub or somewhere else. “What’s even worse, is that children will be at home from school in less-than-ideal circumstances. Often, they won’t get fed, and will experience things they should not be experiencing. But victims and perpetrators need to know that the police

will come and they will force the door down regardless. They will do it.” According to a survey of March 2019, in England and Wales, approximately 1.6 million women and 786,000 men experienced domestic violence. This count is expected to elevate due to this lockdown. Warning the oppressors, home Secretary Priti Patel, who is minister in charge of police has wrote a column in a Sunday newspaper, saying; “My message to every potential victim is simple: we have not forgotten you and we will not let you down. And my message to every perpetrator is equally as simple: you will not get away with your crimes.” The main problem being faced is intense shortage of hostels for women due to insufficient steps took by Government for it as Local authority spent €31.2m in 2010 and it reduced to €23.9m in 2017 which led most of the refuges to shut their doors for people turning them away. A UK-charity, running 24 hours, posted a catalogue enlisting the websites providing safety tips for survivors. many people were furious after a video by, English boxer, Billy Joe Saunders was released in which he was sarcastically telling the opponent that this is how to hit the female partner. He hitting the punch bag explained this is what you should do if “your old woman is giving you mouth” and “hit her on the chin” and then “finish her off.” Afterwards when British Boxing Board took away his license, he apologized saying that he never approves domestic violence. Upon this video, San-

dra Horley, Chief executive of refuge stated that the video was as “dangerous as it is shocking.” The issue of domestic violence is not just limited to UK but it happens all across the world with 137 women dying everyday being murdered by a family member which according to a rough estimate in one-third cases happen to be their exhusband or partner. Cases of domestic violence reported in china, after the outbreak of Covid-19, reported in February 2020 are threefold increased than those reported in February, 2019. According to the founder of Anti-domestic violence group in Jingzhou, central Hubei Province, domestic violence has hurled at the local police station. He reported that in Jianli 162 reports of 7domestic violence has been received which make up threefold of those reported Feb-

ruary 2019. Stating it according to Statistics, he said 90% cases are consequences of Covid-19. In India lockdown is imposed from last three days. According to statistics in India a woman is raped after every 15 minutes with Delhi being the rape capital of the world. The count of people calling children’s charity childline is reported to increase by 9% in Ireland. Since the schools have been shut, visits to the websites of charity has been increased 26% and people has started using its text with an increase of 20%. According to a spokesman, youth wants to discuss more about corona virus, family relationship, anxiety and worry. A frequently asked question to such victims is why they don’t just live but in this condition and especially in a country with pathetic conditions of promot-

ing humans right, it is not just hard but nearly impossible to run away from such relationship. Although these victims have been acknowledged that their not alone and for them 24- hour helpline is there. 30% increase in such cases is seen in France. Women, under such condition, has been suggested to call 3919, under the Slogan ‘It’s not forbidden to flee’. France’s Secretary of State in charge of Gender Equality Marlène Schiappa said; “The crisis that we are going through and the quarantine could unfortunately create a fertile ground for domestic violence,” further elaborating, that “the situation of emergency shelters for female victims of domestic violence is a major concern.” But just hotlines are not enough. Victims need a shelter to go. They are in a need of new forms of communication and good friends. Rachel Williams suggests for this that “Why not just open the hotel rooms for people in need? Why not give them phones? If you think your friend or neighbour is being abused, now might be the time they want help,” Although we have become scared of the people and we are supposed to keep a good distance of 2 meters from them but that should not be a hurdle in way of asking them, ‘Are you okay?” For this we can use social media means. Government, in order to save lives has stepped back to authoritarian and Draconian measures but sadly, and shamefully, many would fall prey of domestic violence .

BURMA ARMY KILLS KAREN COMMUNITY LEADER SHOPPING FOR FOOD

On the evening of 31st March at around 7 pm, the Burma Army killed a Karen community leader who was shopping for food along with other villagers. He had previously gathered community members to buy and provide supplies to Internally Displaced People (IDPs) who had fled due to attacks by the Burma military. Saw Thet Mee was 45 years old, married and had children. He was from Htee Baw Kee village, Saw Mu Plaw village tract, Luthaw township, Mutraw district, Kawthoolei (Karen State). He was crossing a road at Saw Mu Plaw with other villagers returning home with food, when a Burma Army soldier opened fire on them. This is not the first instance of the Burma Army killing civilian villagers in what is supposed to be a ceasefire area. On April 5th 2018, Karen environmental activist Saw O Moo was shot and killed by Burma Army soldiers. There have been hundreds of other instances of the Burma Army breaking the ceasefire. In conflict zones in Kawthoolei, road building doesn’t bring development, it brings death and poverty. Villagers can be cut off from their fields, from nearby villages they trade with, and from access to healthcare and education. This is because it is too dangerous to cross roads. New roads allow the Burma Army to access areas it was previously unable to, increasing the risk of human rights violations against local people. At a time when everyone needs to work together to fight the coronavirus pandemic, the government of Burma and the Burma Army seem to see the global focus on the pandemic as an opportunity to step up their agenda of repression, especially against ethnic people. While ethnic armed organisations call for an immediate nationwide ceasefire, in line with calls from the United Nations General Secretary, the Burma military

continues its operations and killing innocent civilians because of their ethnicity. Journalists who report on conflict in ethnic states are being arrested and ethnic media organisations’ websites, including Karen News, are being blocked by Aung San Suu Kyi’s government, the first time this type of censorship has been imposed since being lifted nine years ago. It may be easy for the killing of Saw Thet Mee to be dismissed by the international community as a sad but all too common event in Burma, but it represents more than that. It is a result of decades of inaction by the international community over the killings of ethnic people in Burma. The military knows they can kill our people without facing consequences. International donors are continuing to lavish funds on the military-led, socalled peace process despite conflict and human rights violations across Burma increasing as a result of Burma Army aggression. International companies continue to do business with the military, helping to fund them, without international sanctions. There is still no arms embargo on Burma even after UN investigators found evidence of genocide. Only a small number of countries impose their own arms embargo on Burma.

Donors also continue to lavish funds on support for Aung San Suu Kyi’s government, despite her government’s own appalling record on human rights, with hundreds of political prisoners in jail, keeping repressive laws in place, jailing journalists who report on human rights violations in ethnic states, and now banning ethnic media. At the same time as the international community fund our oppressors, most of the international donors, who never provided enough aid even for basic food, shelter, education and medical care for refugees and IDPs, have been cutting funding for victims of conflict and human rights violations by the Burma Army, leaving them even more vulnerable to the impacts of COVID-19. Until the international community force the military and the government to pay a price for killing and oppressing our people, they will continue to do so. So far, they have paid no price. We have made this point before and we make it again. If a Burma Army soldier had taken out his rifle and shot dead a father and husband while shopping in Yangon, would we see the same silence and inaction as we see when a father and husband is killed in an ethnic state? The twins – a boy and a girl – were born in the Indian state of Chhattisgarh during the on-going 21 day long nationwide lockdown on 27th march. According to Preeti and Vinay – the parents of twins – the delivery happened after facing several difficulties and therefore we wanted to make the day memorable. They further said that the name would remind them of this day and the hardships they faced while heading to hospital. The on-going 21 days nationwide lockdown has resulted in the sus-

pension of all sorts of transport. So, the ambulance that carried them to hospital was stopped several times on road by police. Moreover, the family members didn’t visit them because the country was under lockdown. The babies were born within 45 minutes of the couple’s arrival to the hospital on march 27. Right after the delivery, the hospital staff started calling the babies corona and covid, so we finally decided to name them after pandemic, added the mother of the twins. The twins were born at Dr. Bhim Rao Ambedkar memorial hospital in the state capital, Raipur. The couple is originally from Uttar Pradesh but live in a rented house in the Purani Basti area of the city.

Racism Is a Virus The Coronavirus Pandemic and a major economic crash create the conditions in which racism can grow. Donald Trump calls it ‘the Chinese virus’ and we have seen violent attacks on the Chinese and Asian Communities. In the Midlands there have been false claims blaming the Muslim Community for crowding into mosques and local shops and defying the social distancing rules. Stand Up To Racism Birmingham is determined that we will not allow the fact that we are isolated in our houses prevent us from continuing to oppose racism in all its forms. We note that the first 5 Doctors to die in the UK were all Muslims. Far from being a drain on our society it is migrants that make our NHS. Rose Brown, joint chair SUTR Birmingham says ‘The faces of coronavirus fatalities in the NHS are far from white. The first deaths were of doctors who were not British nationals. Our NHS relies heavily on support of people from all over the world. Healthcare refugees asked to be considered in the fight against coronavirus.More now than ever we need to remember that disease does not discriminate - and nor should we.’ Martin Lynch, Convenor Black Country SUTR, said ‘The most powerful thing to come out of this disaster is the way in which communities have stood together. The Covid-19 virus is indicriminate. Scapegoating and racism have no place in our society’. We ask everyone to join ‘Clap For Our Carers: Migrants Make the NHS’ at 8pm every Thursday.

New airborne regulations may see hundreds of UK industrial facilities close The latest EU emission control regulations could leave hundreds of industrial facilities around the UK inoperable.

Air pollution control experts Lodge Cottrell are hosting a free Webinar at 10 am on Thursday, 30 April 2020, to help businesses navigate these new changes

It is obvious that “ many businesses are just not prepared for the changes in regulations and have no idea if and how they need to modify their plants to continue operating

Notwithstanding the current COVID-19 pandemic, poor air quality is one of the biggest causes of premature deaths across the globe. Once the current crisis is over, poor air quality will resume its role as a major killer. According to the World Health Organization, ‘Air pollution kills an estimated seven million people worldwide every year.’ On 30 April, Lodge Cottrell, the oldest industrial air pollution control company in the world and now part of KC GreenHoldings, will be hosting a webinar to help industrial businesses further reduce the amount of airborne pollution they emit into our atmosphere. Policymakers are well aware of the effects of poor air quality and are introducing stricter regulations to reduce the emission of airborne pollutants. There are well over 1,000 industrial facilities in the UK, ranging from power plants, mines, mineral processing facilities and chemical plants through to waste treatment plants, paper mills and food processing factories. Yet few of these are ready to comply with the changes to the IED regulations, which are governed

by the Environment Agency and are part of their operating licences. Very many of these businesses are totally unaware of how they might need to modify their plants or operations, what budget they will need for this work, and whether these changes will affect their routine operations or cause unforeseen losses in production. Q/A with Duaa Karim

Q1. Hi Dùaa. Can you tell us a bit about who you are? A1- Hi I’m Dúaa Karim, I’m 18 years old. I am studying for my A Levels at sixth form at the moment. I’m also an actress and I love singing too. Q2. Why did you apply to star in Man like Mobeen? A2- I have always thought the idea of acting would be so amazing but I also thought it was impossible for a normal person to get into, however it’s totally not! I applied for the role of Aksa on Man Like Mobeen, with no acting experience and I got it.

Q4. Did you find it tough being in the public eye as a British Pakistani? and what advice would you give to any young south Asian men and women, wanting to pursue a career in acting? A4- Being in the public eye as a British Asian female opened my eyes to how many people thought it was impossible for someone of a Pakistani ethnicity to be able to act or be on TV. As long as you have the support, I feel as if anyone could get to where they want to be in life and if they put the work in it. I’d also say, ignore negativity! Focus on the positive thoughts and things in life. Q5. Were your family supportive of your career choice? A5- My family are my biggest motivators, especially my mum. I had so much support from my family and I feel as if it’s so important for you to be able to have that, it makes everything so much easier. Q6. How do you cope with the negativity around Asian female actresses and did you receive any negativity? A6- I received quite a bit of hate towards the start of my journey, it did get to me as I was only 15 however, I had a talk with my mum and she made me realise that being in the public eye I will have both sup-

porters and haters and I should just focus on the supporters. I would say to just block all the negativity out and you can do that because all it takes is one button to block an account who is sending hateful comments etc. Also, if the negativity is getting you down then speak to someone! Never keep it all inside as it builds up, there will always be someone who is willing to listen to you.

Q7. Do you feel you are similar to your character Aqsa in ‘Man like Mobeen?’ A7- I definitely feel as if I am like the character Aqsa in real life as she is so confident

and she speaks her mind and in my opinion Aqsa is such a strong independent girl. Q8. What are you currently working on? A8- I have currently worked on a short film called Going Country (county lines) I have done a voice over for a theatre production called Groomed To Perfection and also I had part in a Netflix show called Feel Good. Man Like Mobeen has been nominated for the Visionary Honours 2020, which takes place on the 18th March, London

A more balanced protein intake can reduce age-related muscle loss

STAYING AT HOME The only reasons to leave home are: To shop for basic necessities or pick up medicine To travel to work when you absolutely cannot work from home To exercise once a day, alone or with members of your household Even when doing these activities, you should reduce time spent outside of the home and always try to stay 2 metres apart from anyone you do not live with. STOPPING PUBLIC GATHERINGS To make sure people are staying at home and apart from each other,

Redbridge GP Dr Sood said:

vital that everyone from the South “AsianIt iscommunity follows these new rules,

I cannot stress this enough. The rules have been put into place to reduce our day to day contact with other people, they are a vital part of our efforts to reduce the rate of transmission of coronavirus. We know it’s not going to be easy, however, if we all follow these new rules, the measures will protect the NHS and save lives.

The most important action we can all take to fight coronavirus is to stay at home. This will save lives and protect the NHS. Anyone can spread Coronavirus and that is why the government has introduced new measures which are effective now and will initially last for the three weeks. We must all follow these new measures. The relevant authorities, including the police, will be given the powers to enforce them. So what do the new rules actually mean?

the Government has also stopped all public gatherings of more than two people. We must not meet others, even friends and family. WHAT ELSE CAN YOU DO TO PROTECT YOURSELF? Wash your hands regularly for 20 seconds, each time using soap and water, or use hand sanitiser HOW CAN WE ALL ADAPT TO THESE NEW RULES? The best thing you can do now is plan for how you can adapt your

daily routine. Some of the ways in which you could prepare include: talk to your neighbours and family and exchange phone numbers of household contacts consider and plan for those in your home who are considered vulnerable create a contact list with phone numbers of neighbours, schools, employer, chemist, NHS 111 set up online shopping accounts if possible Further information is available at: https://www.gov.uk/coronavirus

Eating more protein at breakfast or lunchtime could help older people maintain muscle mass with advancing age – but most people eat proteins fairly unevenly throughout the day, new research at the University of Birmingham has found. The body’s mechanisms for producing new muscle require regular stimulation to function efficiently – this stimulation happens when we eat protein. The mechanisms are less efficient in older people, so they need to eat more protein to get the same response as younger people. But just eating more protein is not enough, though – older people also need to spread that intake evenly across all their meals to ensure they maximise the benefits of protein for muscle mass. Researchers in the School of Sport, Exercise and Rehabilitation Sciences at the University of Birmingham, studied the dietary intake of young, middle-aged and old-aged individuals with a particular focus on the amount, pattern and source of protein consumed. Their results showed that, while the majority of individuals across all three groups met or exceeded current national guidelines (RDA) for protein intake, the protein intake and distribution across daily meals and snacks were very varied. The study involved 120 participants divided into three age groups. In the first, participants had an average age of 23; in the second an average age of 51; and in the third an average age of 77. All participants were asked to complete a food diary over a three-day period, weighing out every single food item consumed. Researchers looked for patterns in the dietary behaviour of participants. In particular, they evaluated the protein intake across the different age groups and found 18 different patterns of protein intake throughout the day, showing a wide variety of eating habits. Most noticeably, the team found that old people, compared to young and middle-

aged individuals, people were more likely to eat a lower-quality protein source, such as bread, at lunchtime. The results offer compelling evidence for revised nutritional guidelines that could help older people adopt habits that spread consumption of good quality proteins across all their meals. “We know that older people show a blunted response to muscle building when consuming a certain amount of protein. Therefore, older individuals need to eat more protein to get the same muscle building response as younger and middle-aged people,” explains Dr Benoit Smeuninx, first author on the study. “another way to help muscles make better use of dietary protein is to perform regular exercise”. “Most people are reaching the Recommended Daily Allowance of protein, but our results show that a one-size-fits-all guideline for protein intake isn’t appropriate across all age groups. Simply saying older people should eat more protein isn’t really enough either. We need a more sophisticated and individualised approach that can help people understand when and how much protein to consume to support muscle mass.” Future areas for research include studying how protein needs in hospitalised individuals could aid the maintenance of muscle mass, and to further elucidate the interaction between physical activity protein consumption in the fight against age-related muscle loss.

However, they can perform exercises that may reduce shortness of breath when they have a lower lung function than is desirable. An example could be someone who has chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). A person should always talk to their doctor before starting any exercise program, including breathing exercises. This is especially true if they have an underlying condition such as COPD. Pursed lip breathing Pursed lip breathing is an exercise that can help to keep the airways open for longer to help air flow. The exercise is easy to perform, and people can do it almost anywhere. To do pursed lip breathing: • Sit up straight. Practicing good posture can help promote better lung movement. • Breathe in deeply through your nose in a slow, controlled fashion. • Purse your lips, which is much like making a “kissing” face where your lips are almost, but not quite, touching. • Breathe out through your pursed lips, making a goal of breathing out twice as long as breathing in. Some people may find it beneficial to set a timer, such as focusing on breathing in for 5 seconds and exhaling for 10 seconds. This exercise can be helpful for someone who is not as physically active as some others and may not be using their breathing muscles as frequently.

Those with COPD can also benefit from performing this exercise. Belly breathing Belly breathing is an exercise that focuses on targeting and strengthening the diaphragm muscle that allows a person to take a deep breath. People can follow these steps to accomplish this exercise: • Rest your hand or another

lightweight object on your stomach. • Breathe in slowly through your nose to note how your stomach rises and falls when breathing. • Breathe out

through your mouth. • Breathe in through your nose again, this time trying to get your stomach to go up more than it did with the previous breath. • Try to exhale for a much longer time than when you inhale, such as two to three times as long. • Periodically, roll your shoulders forward and backward and move your head side to side to ensure you are not building tension in your upper body. This exercise from the American Lung

Association helps to improve the rate at which the lungs fill and empty air. A person can practice belly breathing and pursed lip breathing for about 5 to 10 minutes every day to enhance their lung function. Interval training For people who have problems with breathlessness and shortness of breath

while exercising, interval training may be a better solution than steady-state exercise. Interval training involves alternating a more challenging exercise with a slower recovery period. Examples include walking at a very fast pace for 1 minute, then walking more slowly for 2 minutes. Similarly, a person may perform a weightlifting activity for 1 minute, such as bicep curls or lunges, then step to the side or walk at a gentle pace for 2 to 3 minutes. Interval training allows the lungs time to recover before challenging them again. Whenever a person is exercising and becomes short of breath, slowing down for a few minutes and performing pursed lip breathing can help. They can continue pursed lip breathing until feelings of breathlessness subside. Tips for preserving lung health While lung exercises cannot reverse damage already done to the lungs, they can help a person use their lungs to their best capacity. Exercises are not the only thing a person can do to improve or protect their lung health. Other steps people can take include: • refraining from smoking • drinking plenty of water • staying physically active

The lungs are responsible for the exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide that keep the brain, heart, and other parts of the body healthy. Age, smoking, inhaling pollutants, and other factors can affect lung function. If a person has symptoms of poor lung health, such as shortness of breath during daily activities, pain when breathing, or a cough that will not go away, they should see their doctor. The earlier lung problems receive a diagnosis and treatment, the better the treatment outcome is likely to be. Takeaway Lung exercises can be beneficial to lung function. Pursed lip breathing and diaphragm breathing are two common focuses for people in pulmonary rehabilitation to improve their lung function. Before starting any exercise program, including a lung exercise one, it is best to talk to a doctor to ensure there are not any restrictions or individual recommendations for best results.

Ever since the advent of information and technological revolution, the internet has become the primary mode of transmission all over the world. Ranging from 1G to now 5G, our society has become accustomed to implementing and adapting to novel technologies to cater to the growing needs and demands of the people. We haven’t even absorbed the full potential of 4G as most of the population around the world is still using 4G Volte. In the growing sphere of the 5G revolution, is it really necessary to implement it? According to the experts, 5G is an advanced and more sophisticated version of its predecessor 4G. Qualcomm, the first company to launch 5G modem states it as - “5G is more than about just how “fast” it is. In addition to higher peak data rates, 5G will provide much more network capacity by expanding into a new spectrum, such as millimeter wave (mmWave). 5G will also deliver much lower latency for a quicker immediate response, and an overall more uniform user experience so that the data rates stay consistently high even when users are moving around”. Well, there’s no doubt that 5G is a revolutionary technology but it has more disadvantages than its advantages. Firstly, 4G infrastructure cannot be upgraded

5G AND ITS FUTURE AHEAD

THE REVOLUTIONARY PHASE OF THE INTERNET Though the internet as a technology and service does not have a long-standing history as others, still it has penetrated our lives that others haven’t. It was invented on January 1, 1983, used primarily for military purposes, later it expanded to the purpose of communication among scientists

and now the general public. The way the internet has evolved over the years by becoming a necessity from being a luxury defines its potential. 2020 can be termed as a next step towards the usage of the internet. It has become much more than a service used to communicate and entertain. Break-

ing the chains of its limited use, it has now become a tool to coordinate and complete the other necessary tasks. After the COVID-19 outbreak, usage of the internet has increased by more than 25% over diverse platforms and niches. Video calls have replaced faceto-face interaction with colleagues, family, and friends alike. More people started using video-conferencing software like Zoom. Grocery purchases have shifted to online medium even in the developing nations. “Work from home” initiative has turned the office on the internet mode. The New York Times state “We have suddenly become reliant on services that allow us to work and learn from home” Surely the internet will show up some more hidden positive aspects of itself that will help us ease our lives and change the way we live, work, and entertain ourselves.

to 5G standards that’s why it will need a whole new set of fresh investment and 5G mm-wave may suffer many such losses (penetration loss, attenuation due to rain, foliage loss, etc. Even if the infrastructure is somehow upgraded, it will exhaust way too much money. Secondly, the 5G bandwidth area is less than 600mts, whereas the 4G bandwidth area is around 2-4KM. This concludes setting up almost three times more towers. Not only will it be unfeasible for a country to carry out such huge infrastructural plans but also maintaining and operating them. These 5G Towers will also release heavy radiofrequency radiations; Thus, dangers increase the harm of EMR poisoning, resulting in headaches, nose bleeding, eye pains, nausea, vomiting, and flu-like symptoms. Although health claims might be relevant to some extent, they are yet not fully approved by the authorities. The idea and data we have now is just a preemptive assumption to it, still even a 1% damage to health is severe in some cases. Meanwhile, the frequencies used to power 5G services are safe, new international guidelines have declared. Forbes quotes it this way - “Fortunately, science already tells us that 5G almost certainly poses no danger to humans, Unless you

value unfounded conspiracies over bona fide science” Scientists from around the world have different and fluctuating views on 5G technology. Dr. Alex Berezow of the American Council on Science and Health states the assumption that 5G is safe is already backed by the full suite of scientific studies. Only, he contends, “if sufficient evidence shows something to the contrary, then we should reconsider the status quo.” While on the other hand Dr. L. Hardell, Professor of Oncology at Örebro University in Sweden, states: “The telecom industry is trying to roll out technology that may have very real, unintended harmful consequences” regarding 5G. Keeping the business in mind companies and governments all around the globe are somehow trying to shell out the fear amongst the public and the experts. Governments know the capital gain and annual revenues they will gain from spectrum charges and other licenses from the commencement of 5G services. 5G ready companies like Altiostar, Cisco Systems, Datang Telecom/Fiberhome, Ericsson, Huawei, Nokia, Qualcomm, Samsung, and ZTE are the on the other hand fighting to win over the war. However, no country has explicitly banned 5G, to show its confidence in novel technologies, though they have become more and more averse from its nationwide launches like Australia, New Zealand, Japan, Taiwan, and the U.S.A. Still, the battle is on air, In UK people are burning down the 5G towers citing its contribution to coronavirus and other diseases, which are bogus but this shows how the general public is against the introduction of 5G services in their area or locality. But governments still aren’t taking a backstep: In UK a £65 million package has been announced for new 5G trials, Winners of £35 million funding pot to help Britain unlock the potential of 5G announced Comes as new £30 million 5G competition for sectors including creative industries launched Part of Government’s continued commitment to level up infrastructure across the UK. On the other hand countries like India, Brazil, Russia, etc have shown their interest in 5G and their trail launches in the coming years. On the ending note, we would like to share with you the future of 5G, According to GSMA GLOBAL “5G will account for as many as 1.2 billion connections by 2025”, now we don’t know how such a thing could happen amid the given diverse disadvantages of 5G. The answer to the question is certainly a million dollar one!

FERRARI TO RESUME PRODUCTION MERCEDES-BENZ IN MARANELLO AND MODENA AS CARS UK LAUNCHES OF 14 APRIL 2020 NEW ONLINE SHOWROOM

Ferrari N.V. announces today that subject to supply chain continuity it now plans to resume production as of 14 April 2020. All activities that can be conducted in smart working will continue to be performed as has been the case in recent weeks. The Company will continue to cover all days of absence to those unable to take advantage of this solution. Given the huge uncertainty and lack of predictability that the Covid-19 has created, the Company is taking all ap-

propriate actions to assure the wellbeing and welfare of its employees and that are deemed to be in the best interest of all stakeholders. The Company anticipates that it will be in a position to provide further financial guidance to the investment community during

its first quarter earnings’ call on May 4, 2020. It remains confident that in view of its brand equity, strong balance sheet and sound business model it will continue to create value for all stakeholders beyond the near term uncertainties.

WEAR YOUR THREE-POINT SEATBELT… OR FACE A THREE-POINT PENALTY

Road safety and breakdown organisation GEM Motoring Assist is calling on the Government to increase the penalty for drivers and passengers who do not wear a seatbelt on journeys. GEM has for many years lobbied the Government to introduce tougher seatbelt offences. Now, with emergency services and hospitals at full stretch dealing with the coronavirus pandemic, it’s time to show everyone still out on the road that they must wear a seatbelt on every journey. GEM road safety officer Neil Worth commented: “Three penalty points for non-wearing of seatbelts creates an effective deterrent. New research shows that Northern Ireland, where the penalty for not wearing a seatbelt includes three points, has the lowest percentage of deaths where a seatbelt was not used of any UK nation.” “We have seen mobile phone penalties for drivers rise in recent years, and if seatbelt offences were made harsher in

this way, we believe would see a significant and immediate reduction in the number of drivers and vehicle occupants killed and seriously injured on our roads.

“As the nation gets to grips with the tough sanctions introduced to deal with coronavirus, we are asking everyone who needs to be out on the road to put that seatbelt on, even for the shortest journeys. “Failure to wear a seatbelt puts you at much greater risk of being seriously hurt in a road collision. That drains NHS resources, which in the current climate is entirely unacceptable. “Since its launch in 1959, the threepoint seatbelt stands as one of the great safety inventions in modern times. We believe the introduction of a threepoint penalty for not wearing one would make a significant contribution to casualty reduction.”

MercedesBenz has launched a new advertising campaign to promote the launch of its new online showroom, which aims to make it even easier for customers to find their perfect car.

The TV advert focusses on a series of situations where people are confronted by endless choices that are stripped back to show the one option that perfectly suits them. The website shows a livestock locator, which can be narrowed down by location, and has the capability to run a finance quote which includes the

retailer’s best offer on a specific car. Standalone options have been packaged together into well-equipped model lines, which means customers can compare different cars, retailers and offers to ensure they are getting the best deal. Rob Halloway, Marketing Director, Mercedes-Benz Cars UK, said: “Our online showroom makes it incredibly easy to choose your ideal MercedesBenz car, however you choose to select it. Everything you see is clearly explained and in stock and available to buy from our retailers, today. Every car in the UK is in stock and shown online, and it’s all available 24/7. All done from your phone or computer in a couple of minutes and a few clicks. Rob added: “To support the online showroom opening we created a massive ad campaign– you’ll see our characters in everyday situations, facing bewildering choices. Then, magically, the perfect solution presents itself, which leads to our Mercedes-Benz online showroom. We’re launching with a 30 second TV spot, running all year, supported by a fully integrated digital plan.” Once a customer has found their perfect car, they can put down a deposit there and then via the website.

MAJORITY OF DRIVERS WOULD LIKE TO SEE P PLATES BECOME MANDATORY Over two thirds of people quizzed would like to see P plates become mandatory for all new drivers. A new poll from the UK’s leading independent car retailer found 70 per cent of people want newly qualified drivers to have to automatically display P plates on their vehicle after passing their driving test. Some 590 people part in the poll on the Motorpoint website – www.motorpoint.co.uk Currently there is no legal requirement for new drivers to display a P plate except in Northern Ireland where it is compulsory for everyone to display an R plate (restricted driver plates) for a year after passing their test. This comes as new research revealed that 21.6 per cent of new drivers are involved in a car accident during their first year of driving.

Mark Carpenter, Chief Executive Officer of Motorpoint, said: “The results of the Motorpoint poll clearly show that more serious consideration needs to be given to whether or not P plates should become mandatory throughout the UK for an agreed period of time or at least until a new qualified driver feels confident enough to remove them.”

EFFECTS OF CORONAVIRUS ON CRICKET Cricket is a leading sport in commonwealth nations (Countries that were a part of the British Empire), and it is growing at a rapid pace in other countries too. Played as a gentlemen’s game; Tournaments, Series and Leagues are a crucial part of the cricketing world which are conducted now and then between teams. But due to the coronavirus outbreak, cricket is suffering as badly as any other sport. According to sources, the livelihood of over a million population around the world is dependent on

cricket. With major leagues like IPL (Indian Premier League) and others being canceled or halted, millions of fans and people associated with it are shunned to shock. Bilateral and trilateral series of major teams are also canceled. With the biennial T20 World cup ahead in the next 6 months, ICC and other governing bodies are looking deep into the situation to maintain the Atmosphere of excitement. It has been for the first time that there has been such a long gap between any interna-

tional and domestic matches being played. The ongoing World Test Championship also sees a narrow hope of revival, with the waste of several months. The revival of cricket as of any other sport or event now depends upon the status and outbreak of coronavirus; with hopes all up, fans look forward to being at the stadiums and in front of the TV enjoying their favorite sport again!

Tokyo 2020 Olympics postponed over coronavirus concerns The global competition is the biggest sporting event to be affected by the coronavirus pandemic.

The 2020 Olympic Games will be postponed by a year because of the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, after Japan’s Prime Minister Shinzo Abe reached an agreement with International Olympic Committee (IOC) President. An estimated 10,000 athletes had been scheduled to march into Tokyo’s national stadium for the opening ceremony of the Summer Olympics, and about 600,000 overseas visitors had been expected to flock to the Japanese capital for the world’s largest sporting event, which was set to run July 24 through August 9. Concerns about coronavirus pandemic have led to the abandonment or postponement of major sporting events around the world, from the 2020 Ice Hockey World Championship in Zurich and Lausanne to the Horse Racing World Cup in Dubai. The Olym-

pic Games now join that list. The postponement of Tokyo 2020 comes after mounting pressure to cancel or delay the event due to the risks of COVID-19, which has killed more than 15,000 people worldwide as of March 23. The athletics governing body U.S.A Track and Field (USATF) called for the Games’ postponement in an open letter on March 21, and Norway and Brazil’s national Olympic committees endorsed the same idea on March 20 and 21 respectively. Even President Donald Trump had asked for the Olympic Games to be postponed. Escalating the pressure, Canada warned on Monday that it wouldn’t send its athletes to the Tokyo Olympics unless the Games were delayed until 2021. Hayley Wickenheiser, a six-time Canadian Olympian and a member of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) Athletes’ Commission, had backed the suspension plans. Wickenheiser, who is training to become a doctor,

wrote on Twitter on Tuesday March 17 that the IOC’s insistence on proceeding with Tokyo 2020 “is insensitive and irresponsible.” Canceling or postponing the Olympics was not a decision taken lightly. The financial blow of canceling the games will be substantial for Japan, which has already invested at least $12.6 billion into the 2020 Olympics; by some estimates, it would reduce Japan’s annual GDP growth by 1.4%. Yet it could hardly have come as a shock to Japan’s population. A survey published in Japan in March 20202 showed that about a 70% percent of people didn’t expect the Olympics to go forward in Tokyo this summer.
