The Emerging Sikh boxing Star

Image Credit: Tal Singh Khan will manage the 26-year-old talented player. He is an England amateur champion. Khan is negotiating with various promoters to push Singh into the professional ranks this year. The lightweight athlete has been training in Khan’s gym since last spring and impressed the world champion, who announced Singh as his first signatory. Khan said that he is negotiating with Eddie Hearn and other promoters. He hopes that people would like Tal’s unconventional style and the power and speed he possesses. “He has now obtained a boxing license. It is great to make him my first protégé. He said: “This is a huge step. I am a fighter myself and I am still fighting today.” Khan mentioned his reason of participation in it. He said that boxing has slowed down for him and maybe he has a fight or two left in his career. I want to enter the management to help these young fighters and give them confidence so that they can reach their highest level. “There has never been a Sikh world champion. He may be the first.” Singh revealed how Khan participated in one of his early battles and then offered to train with him after the Covid-19 pandemic brought Liverpool’s advance on

the amateur circuit to a halt. Singh said, ``It’s amazing. I know there is a lot of pressure, and the expectations are high. ‘’ “I wanted to spend some time at this level in the beginning. All of this is about experience, but I am very confident that once we gain the pace, we will definitely provide those who need training”. There are no words to show how I feel, it’s really incredible.” Singh expressed his appreciation and recounted how he got the trophy when Amir joined his second amateur competition. He said that it still feels unreal that khan is training him to the highest point. Khan won world championships in both divisions, including becoming a 140-pound uniform belt holder and enjoying the opportunity to pass on his ring skills. Khan said: “I saw Taal fighting and I thought ‘wow’.” He possesses everything needed to be a champion. “I’ve been competing for a long time. I have met a lot of fighters, but not only the skill and speed, but also the level of your effort in the gym. When we knew this, we started to train each other together.I thought “he is a combative warrior”, so why not bring him under my wings”, he added. “I am a long-range fighter. He is more like an internal fighter, so I taught him some external things. To win the historic world title is the main inspiration of Singh. Moreover, he also wanted to inspire and encourage more young boxers in the Sikh Community. He said: “As the struggle progresses and my career evolves, I hope people will see my success as inspiration and draw inspiration from them to make their dreams come true and what they want to do.”

Can you help Birmingham City Council develop a Policy to support people to stay independent in their own home? Birmingham City Council is looking at how we better use the Disabled Facilities Grant (DFG). Using revised legislation, the council is now able to develop a new approach to help citizens who have care and support needs with renewals, repairs and adaptations in their homes. This new approach will be supporting the health and social care priorities in areas such as hospital discharge, keeping citizens independent at home and reducing hospital re-admission by enabling citizens to apply for grants or loans including using the DFG. We are looking for a number of citizens including those who have received a DFG, who would like to work with us to inform this new approach. Initially we are looking for a small group to tell us your experiences and what did or didn’t work, followed by a more formal wider

group to comment and critique the draft policy and documentation. The first online meeting is planned to take place on: Wednesday 21st April 2021 1pm – 2pm. If you would like to be considered to work with us, can we please ask you to drop us an email to getinvolved@ birmingham.gov.uk telling us why you would like to be involved and what experience you could offer to the group by Wednesday 14th April 2021 and if you

are successful we will confirm your attendance to the first meeting on Thursday 15th April. We are expecting a big response, so if you are not invited initially to be involved, we will ensure you are invited later as part of the project. If you have any further questions, please contact the Citizen Involvement team at getinvolved@birmingham.gov. uk or call us on 0121 464 4133.

HRH The Prince of Wales congratulates Bangladesh on its Golden Jubilee and celebrates the shared values of the UK and Bangladesh His Royal Highness The Prince of Wales has delivered a video message to everyone around the world celebrating the Golden Jubilee of Bangladesh, and expressed sadness that the pandemic had prevented him from visiting Bangladesh to mark the occasion. Reflecting on the past fifty years, The Prince commended Bangladesh’s remarkable achievements, including: bringing more than 50 million people out of extreme poverty since 1990; increasing life expectancy and reducing infant mortality; and turning the economy into one of the fastestgrowing in the world. The Prince also commended Bangladesh’s “considerable leadership on tackling the existential threats from accelerating climate change” and welcomed “the role of The Honourable Prime Minister, Sheikh Hasina, in chairing the Climate Vulnerable Forum of nations most affected by the multiple threats of global warming, climate change and biodiversity loss”. The Prince, who is Royal Founding Patron of the British Asian Trust, noted the Trust’s support for Bangladesh, and highlighted the Trust’s work in the past year which has included

setting up COVID-19 sample collection kiosks, building on mental health awareness by providing counselling services, and supporting children missing out on school through a virtual education initiative. Contemplating the pandemic, The Prince acknowledged the “dreadfully heavy impact on so many lives and livelihoods” and expressed “heartfelt gratitude to frontline workers helping to keep Bangladesh safe during these difficult times, and to the many British Bangladeshis who contribute so much to the National Health Service in the UK”. The Prince went on to recognise the 600,000 strong British-Bangladeshi diaspora community and the “incredible contribution this community has made to all walks of British life”. In closing, The Prince observed that the UK and Bangladesh “have a shared history, a shared constitutional commitment to freedom, the rule of law, free speech and democracy and an affection which continues to bind us in friendship. “We come together today in the context of the Commonwealth, as friends and beneficiaries of a common heritage. We shall remain together as partners over the years to come. “I send my fondest wishes to Bangladesh and all those celebrating this very special occasion. Shadhinotar ponchash bochhore Bangladesh ke amar obhinandan!”

British Kebab Awards breaks new record for entries despite the coronavirus pandemic Whilst the hospitality sector is waiting to reopen its doors in April following the current lockdown, the British Kebab Awards has exceeded all expectations given the current circumstances and attracted the most ever entries in its nine-year history. The Awards, which are sponsored by JUST EAT and supported by the Kebab Alliance, the new industry body recently set up to represent the sector, recognise and champion the efforts of local kebab takeaways and restaurants across the UK. More than 350 entries have made it to the semi-final longlist – the most ever since the awards began in 2013 – and have a chance of winning an award at a prestigious ceremony at the Park Plaza Westminster Bridge Hotel on 26 October. Over 1,200 guests, including Cabinet ministers and Shadow Cabinet members, usually attend the VIP-studded ceremony. Recognising the UK’s thriving kebab restaurant and takeaway sector is very important. I’m proud to be part of this landmark event which will showcase what the sector has to offer and reward the best businesses for their success.” Andrew Kenny, UK Managing Director of longstanding award sponsors, Just Eat, added: “We’re delighted to continue our sponsorship of the British Kebab Awards, which recognises individuals and businesses at

the forefront of the kebab industry. Not only do the longlisted restaurants and takeaways serve fantastic food, they also offer a vital source of local jobs, bring diversity to our high streets and make a significant contribution to the UK economy - particularly important at the end of a challenging year.” Ibrahim Dogus, founder of the British Kebab Awards and Director of the newly formed Kebab Alliance, commented: “This year’s longlist demonstrates the sector’s diversity, with more entries than ever before including from a wide range of restaurants and takeaways across the UK. From twists on the classics, to new

vegan varieties, we are proud to celebrate one of the nation’s best loved industries, the kebab industry, as it continues to grow in new and exciting ways. After such a challenging year of COVID lockdowns, the ceremony will also give staff who work in the industry a chance to celebrate.” The awards are also sponsored by Unilever, Cobra Beer, Big K Charcoal, Bookers, Coca-Cola, Alton and Co Accountants, Atlacarte, DD Points, Troy Digital, McCain Foods and Foodelo. Horacio Cal, Away-from-Home CD Director at Unilever, said: “We are delighted to be part of the 2021 British Kebab Awards for the 4th year

running and I want to congratulate all the semi-finalists! As our partnership grows stronger, the number of kebab independent restaurants realising the value of offering Unilever ice cream is growing every year. They provide some of our most loved ice cream brands available for every occasion: Magnum (the number one Ice Cream brand in the UK) and Ben & Jerry’s (the number one dessert in the UK). We look forward to continuing to work in partnership with the Kebab restaurant industry, as we continue to increase our knowledge of how we can better support this favourite of the British High Street.” Lord Karan Bilimoria, the Founder and Chairman of Cobra Beer said: “Cobra beer is proud to sponsor the 9th British Kebab Awards. Kebabs have become a great British institution, with over 1 million kebabs sold a day. The Kebab awards celebrate the hard work and achievement of the industry which contributes billions of pounds to the UK economy and employs over 200,000 people. I wish the Kebab Awards team, its inspirational founder Ibrahim Dogus, and all the nominees every success.” Voting is now open to the general public who select their local kebab eateries at: britishkebabawards.co.uk.

DESIGN CONCEPT IMAGES OF COVID-19 MEMORIAL GARDENS RELEASED

Pictures showing the concept of what a series of COVID-19 memorial community gardens across Birmingham could look like have been released by the city council. The images have been revealed on the eve of the first anniversary of the first Coronavirus lockdown, which started on March 24 last year.

At present the council is developing a proposal to work with local communities on a series of such gardens across the city, in recognition of the fact the virus has affected all parts of Birmingham. Community groups have been in discussions with the council over the idea of how to best remember those who

Cllr Ian Ward, Leader of Birmingham City Council, said: “The last year has been a time of grief and heartbreak for too many people in Birmingham as communities and neighbourhoods right across the city have experienced loss and tragedy and it’s important to remember and pay tribute. Our initial designs are an excellent starting point and will help us develop ideas in partnership with the people of Birmingham. Now we want to work with communities on this and we look forward to hearing from those who want to help us shape the ideas.”

ISLAMIC RELIEF UK LAUNCHES ITS PRERAMADAN CAMPAIGN AS MUSLIMS PREPARE FOR A SECOND RAMADAN IN LOCKDOWN

With the holy month of Ramadan approaching, the faith-inspired charity, Islamic Relief UK begins its pre-Ramadan campaign, with appeals focusing on providing relief to vulnerable communities at home and abroad. This year’s Ramadan campaign will be split into three strands, with the Pre-Ramadan stage of the campaign focusing on the beliefs of Muslim people and the beliefs that Islamic Relief holds dear. It uses the slogan: We Believe. From 11 March – 11 April, the preRamadan campaign will highlight the work that the Charity supported last year; it will reassure supporters and potential supporters that if they donate to Islamic Relief, their funds will reach people in need and will be spent as efficiently and effectively as possible. By donating to Islamic Relief, supporters have the opportunity to help people in up to 37 countries. Last year, the charity assisted 13.8 million people. As part of the pre-Ramadan campaign, supporters will receive a poster with the message, We Believe, reminding us to continue to have faith and not to despair in these trying times. Islamic Relief UK encourages supporters who receive the direct mail and the poster to display it in their windows, or at their local mosque, as a sign of solidarity with those suffering around the world. This year, Islamic Relief UK will also be hosting a variety of events during Ramadan. The award winning Cake Campaign, which was put on hold in 2020, will return in

April 2021 along with a Ramadan quiz on the Islam Channel. There will be a virtual mosque on the website, where you can find a prayer timetable and some duas, and children’s resources and information on how to have an Eco-Ramadan. There will also be more new content on Islamic Relief UK’s new TikTok channel and a podcast launching later this month. Ramadan is a time when Muslims are more charitable, often supporting their community through an obligatory religious levy, zakat*. In 2020, Islamic Relief helped over 13.8 million people worldwide, and this Ramadan will be an opportunity to show donors and supporters

exactly why their donations are essential. Islamic Relief UK’s Ramadan campaign will continue through the holy month, finishing in early June with a post-Ramadan campaign containing messages of thanks to those who have chosen to support the charity. Zia Salik, the interim Director of Islamic Relief UK said: “When we talk to our supporters about our international work, we normally ask them to imagine what it must be like to live in a developing country where there is poverty and poor health- we ask them to put themselves in the shoes of others; to feel their suffering. Over the last year, we really have lived some

of the experiences of others. We too have suffered poor health and some of us have experienced increased poverty as we have lost jobs or businesses or been put on furlough. To a certain extent, we have suffered as others normally suffer. “Of course we should worry about ourselves, but throughout all our own suffering, our faith teaches us not to forget to feel for others. We need to come together to feel as one. When someone else aches, we should ache too. We believe in Allah and we believe in responding as one to the suffering of our brothers and sisters.”

lost their lives in the pandemic – and have supported the concept unveiled today. In the outline designs drawn up by the council’s Chelsea Flower Show award-winning team, the central feature is a pebble bed that would give communities the opportunity to write the name of someone lost in the pandemic on one of the stones. Additionally, the concept includes colourful plant species like forgetme-not, and the trees that would form part of the gardens would be spaced at two-metre intervals – as a nod to the social distancing guidance people have been asked to follow over the last 12 months. The benches are intended to provide people with somewhere to reflect and discuss their memories in a setting local to them. The city council would maintain any sites developed as part of the ongoing maintenance of the city’s parks and open spaces, with volunteer support also welcomed where capacity and interest exists. There is also work ongoing regarding a suitable city memorial, and details will be announced once finalised. Cllr John O’Shea, Cabinet Member for Street Scene and Parks at Birmingham City Council, added: “During the pandemic our open spaces have taken on a hugely significant role for the people of Birmingham as a place for exercising and safely meeting. “These gardens would add another dimension to our parks and give people a way in which to remember those we have lost and everything that has happened during these tragic times. “We are keen to work with communities in all parts of Birmingham to develop plans for memorial gardens so please get in touch if you want to get involved.” As of 5 March, a total of 2,873 deaths had been recorded in Birmingham with COVID-19 on the death certificate.

Can drinking cocoa protect your heart when you’re stressed?

Increased consumption of flavanols – a group of molecules occurring naturally in fruit and vegetables – could protect people from mental stress-induced cardiovascular events such as stroke, heart disease and thrombosis, according to new research. Researchers have discovered that blood vessels were able to function better during mental stress when people were given a cocoa drink containing high levels of flavanols than when drinking a nonflavanol enriched drink. A thin membrane of cells lining the heart and blood vessels, when functioning efficiently the endothelium helps to reduce the risk of peripheral vascular disease, stroke, heart disease, diabetes, kidney failure, tumour growth, thrombosis, and severe viral infectious diseases. We know that mental stress can have a negative effect on blood vessel function. A UK research team from the University of Birmingham examined the effects of cocoa flavanols on stress-induced changes on vascular function – publishing their findings in Nutrients. Lead author, Dr. Catarina Rendeiro, of the University of Birmingham’s School of Sport, Exercise and Rehabilitation Sciences, explains: “We found that drinking flavanol-rich cocoa can be an effective dietary strategy to reduce temporary impairments in endothelial function following mental stress and also improve blood flow during stressful episodes”. “Flavanols are extremely common in a wide range of fruit and vegetables. By utilizing the known cardiovascular ben-

efits of these compounds during periods of acute vascular vulnerability (such as stress) we can offer improved guidance to people about how to make the most of their dietary choices during stressful periods.” In a randomized study, conducted by postgraduate student Rosalind Baynham, a group of healthy men drank a high-flavanol cocoa beverage 90 minutes before completing an eight-minute mental stress task. The researchers measured forearm blood flow and cardiovascular activity at rest and during stress and assessed functioning of the blood vessels up to 90 min

post stress – discovering that blood vessel function was less impaired when the participants drank high-flavanol cocoa. The researchers also discovered that flavanols improve blood flow during stress. Stress is highly prevalent in today’s society and has been linked with both psychological and physical health. Mental stress induces immediate increases in heart rate and blood pressure (BP) in healthy adults and also results in temporary impairments in the function of arteries even after the episode of stress has ceased. Single episodes of stress have been shown to increase the risk of acute cardiovascular events and the impact of stress on the blood vessels has been suggested to contribute to these stress-induced cardiovascular events. Indeed, previous research by Dr Jet Veldhuijzen van Zanten, co-investigator on this study, has shown that people at risk for cardiovascular disease show poorer vascular responses to acute stress. “Our findings are significant for everyday diet, given that the daily dosage administered could be achieved by consuming a variety of foods rich in flavanols - particularly apples, black grapes, blackberries, cherries, raspberries, pears, pulses, green tea and unprocessed cocoa. This has important implications for measures to protect the blood vessels of those individuals who are more vulnerable to the effects of mental stress,” commented Dr. Rendeiro.

Academic offers Sikh faith expertise for BBC documentary over 60 years and there is still a degree of illiteracy about their religion and this documentary explores the importance of the ethics around Sikh beliefs and practices including wearing of the turban and the kirpan.” Being Sikh is currently available to watch on BBC iPlayer and is being

aired on BBC One on Tuesday 13 April 2021 at 10.45 pm. Listen to a recent interview by Dr Takhar on BBC Radio Wolverhampton. The Centre for Sikh and Panjabi Studies is the first of its kind in the UK and was launched in 2018, offering PhDs and Master’s level courses in Sikh

studies as well as continuing professional development (CPD) courses for teachers and managers. Anyone interested in studying in the University’s School of Humanities should register for one of the University’s forthcoming Virtual Open Days.

SLEEP OUT FOR SYRIA

The documentary, Being Sikh, explores how people within the Sikh faith celebrate and mark some of life’s biggest moments from birth to coming of age, marriage and end of life. Dr Takhar is an internationally recognised researcher within Sikh Studies and the Centre for Sikh and Panjabi Studies at the University of Wolverhampton is the only centre across the UK and Europe that researches and teaches subject matter relating to the Sikh and Panjabi communities. Her publication on ‘Sikh Identity: An exploration of Groups among Sikhs’ (Ashgate 2005) is used as a key text in many Universities around the world. Takhar’s research is on-going in terms of caste issues and gender dynamics

amongst Punjabis, and Sikhs specifically. She is currently supervising two research projects. Dr Takhar said: “Sikh identity has always had multiple layers even from the time of the Gurus and it’s really positive to see this become the subject matter of a new BBC documentary. “The programme explores several stories and the relationship that Sikhs have with their faith at pivotal moments in their life, such as when a child is born or when a family member dies. “I was honoured to consult on the programme. My expertise ensures that the views are representative of what Sikhs believe and practise. “Sikhs have been living in the UK for

Monday 15th March marked ten years since the beginning of the conflict that has engulfed Syria, costing countless lives, and displacing millions more. Many Syrians are unable to return home, and have spent the past decade in makeshift tents in poorly equipped camps. On Saturday 20th March, Manchester charity Human Appeal called on supporters to spend a night in a tent, under the stars, or anywhere that isn’t the comfort of their own bedroom, and to share their experience on social media with the hashtag #SleepOutForSyria. One family that answered the call was North Leeds mum Naggina Asaf and her children Mariya and Muhammad. Naggina said: “I took part in Sleep Out for Syria because I wanted to do something to show solidarity with the millions of Syrians who don’t have any choice but to sleep in the worst conditions. I loved seeing so many people taking part and it gives me hope that after ten years of war the world can come together to try and stop the suffering.” Human Appeal has been active in Syria since the start of the conflict a decade

ago, carrying out emergency interventions and providing food, water, sanitation and hygiene aid. Their Al Imaan Hospital for Women and Children is also the last hope for many thousands in northwest Syria, and carries out lifesaving operations as well as giving refuge to expecting mothers. Dr Mohamed Ashmawey, Human Appeal CEO said: “This small act of solidarity with the Syrian people will have such a huge impact if more and more people get involved. While we east, sit and sleep in our homes, there are millions of Syrians for whom home is a distant memory, and a generation of children is being born whose only idea of home is a makeshift tent. “I am encouraged when I see people Sleeping out for Syria, and I look forward to Human Appeal being able to bring change to even more lives in Syria as a result.” Fahad Khan, from Human Appeal’s UK Programmes Team said: “I know I speak for everyone at Human Appeal when I say that I can’t thank Naggina and others like her enough for

the effort they’ve made to support the Syrian people. It’s so heartwarming to see people doing their bit and I know we’re going to be able to change so many lives for the better because people decided to Sleep out for Syria. “By working together we can rebuild Syria and make sure we don’t have to mark the next decade, and the decade after that, where more and more lives will be lost.”

CHINA-IRAN BILLION DEAL AND PROSPECTS FOR PAKISTAN

China has signed a 25-year agreement with Iran. This is a $400 billion transaction. This could prove to be a game-changer. The agreement was signed on Saturday during the Tehran visit of Wang Yi who is the Foreign Minister of China. He met with all major stakeholders, including Iranian President Hassan Rouhani. This is a comprehensive agreement. Beijing and Tehran have not disclosed details. The report said it was largely based on an 18-page draft that was leaked last year. China will invest 400 billion U.S. dollars in Iran. This will expand in the next 25 years. The money will be invested in Banking, telecommunications, ports, railways, healthcare, etc. Iran is one of the top oil producers in the world. It holds 10% of the world’s proven oil reserves. According to reports, China will receive “normal and substantially discounted” Iranian oil supplies. So this would be a win-win situation for both countries. Remember, both China and Iran are facing US sanctions. Therefore, they have signed the deal. It transcends the economy. This is a strategic agreement. Last year’s draft showed the military relationship between China and Iran. It called for “deepening military cooperation,” which includes joint training and exercises, joint research and weapon development, and intelligence sharing. Therefore, in the words of the spokesperson of the Iranian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, this is a “complete road map.” PROSPECTS FOR PAKISTAN: Pakistan is the third party that has benefited the most from the China-Iran strategic partnership agreement that was concluded this weekend. According to reports, Beijing plans to invest more than US$400 billion in the Islamic Republic’s economy within 25 years, with a focus on energy and infrastructure. It is no exaggeration to say that one can correctly describe this as a much-needed lifeline, which may ensure West Asia’s stability in the face of severe US sanctions and increased US-led regional

military pressure from the Gulf Cooperation Council and its “Israeli” opponents. Islamabad’s interest lies not only in ensuring the stability of the larger community but also in strengthening its regional ties with all interested countries through the country’s new grand economic and diplomatic strategy announced at the first Islamabad Security Dialogue earlier this month. Considering that Pakistan is the host country of the “One Belt, One Road” initiative (the flagship of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC)), it is natural that the large-scale project will expand westward to Iran because China is said to have committed to investing in the country. This will advance the vision of regional integration called WCPEC+. “W” refers to the westward expansion of CPEC. In this case, it reached Turkey and Azerbaijan through Iran, and finally reached Russia and the European Union through these two major transit countries. W-CPEC+ is the best opportunity to achieve this goal, and it may eventually lead to the emergence of a broader regional integration network composed of all four countries, which can be temporarily called TIPA after its initial name. The rise of TIPA promoted by China through W-CPEC+ may produce a strong and economically stable Muslim-majority belt across the borders of West and Central Asia, which will have a profound impact on trans-regional geopolitics. In summary, the economic and geopolitical significance of the China-Iran strategic partnership is undoubtedly a game-changer, although it will certainly take time to realize these expected benefits. The four complementary factors affecting these conditions are CPEC, W-CPEC+, the recently improved trilateral coordination between AzerbaijanPakistan-Turkey, and Iran’s inevitable incorporation of the former to establish the TIPA regional integration network. All these are prepared to combine in a mutually beneficial way to unleash the power of the Eurasian Century, thereby improving Pakistan’s key role in the Eurasian Century.

PROTESTS IN BANGLADESH ON MODI’S VISIT

Bangladesh’s Golden Jubilee celebration plan became outrageous as large-scale protests broke out against Modi who arrived in Dhaka on March 26 as the main guest. In anti-Modi’s protests, at least 10 people were killed and dozens were injured. The Prime Minister of India was invited to commemorate the 50th Independence day of the country. The Bangladeshi government was forced to deploy border security forces across the country to maintain peace and order. It also restricted access to Facebook and its messaging app to contain the mobilization of protesters. A week ago, the Conservative Party and the Left-leaning Student Union held many rallies and demonstrations in the capital Dhaka. The public’s anger at Modi’s visit to the country became clear at those rallies. Demonstrators criticized Modi’s role in the 2002 Gujarat massacre, in which at least 1,000 people were killed, most of them Muslims. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi faced backlash for violent human right conditions in Kashmir, New Delhi and

some other parts of India. Right after Modi landed in Bangladesh on March 26th, the protests became intense in the cities near the Indian border. Security forces opened fire on the demonstrators, killing at least 10 people and injuring dozens of others. Some political analysts raised questions that Modi has visited Bangladesh before in 2015 but that didn’t trigger such protests. So what has changed now? “The general public opinion is that the extremely unpopular government of Bangladesh’s Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will only be able to remain in power with the support of India.” In 2014, when the national elections held under the leadership of

the current Hasina government were nothing more than a farce, because more than half of the seats were decided without competition. India supported Hasina. The election was guaranteed. This clinched that Hasina can continue to serve and that complaints from the United States and Europe about the legitimacy of the new government were ruled out. Then in 2019, in another election, Hasina came to power for the fourth time with an overwhelming victory, bagging 288 from 300 parliamentary seats. But the election has been widely criticized because Hasina faces charges of massive manipulation, intimidation of opposition work-

ers and widespread violence. India once again supported the Hasina government and she won. Another interesting thing to notice is that Hasina was able to stay in power not only because of the support of the Indians but also because she vigorously allocated the resources of Bangladesh to the elites of India, the West and Bangladesh.” At the same time, from the nationality issue of India to the BJP’s remarks against Muslims that also demean Bangladeshis has also outraged them against Modi and these anti-Modi sentiments were shown as violent protests that broke out against him on his visit.

INDIAN FARMERS ANNOUNCED TO MARCH TO PARLIAMENT IN MAY

Thousands of farmers have been protesting against the central government’s three agricultural laws near the Delhi border for more than five months. They will go to the parliament in the first half of May. Samyukta Kisan Morcha, an umbrella organization composed of 40 farmers’ unions, will lead the stir. “SKM has announced the parliamentary parade in the first two weeks of May. In addition to farmers and labourers, women, Dalit-AwapasiBahhu, unemployed youth and all sectors of society will participate in the march.” According to the statement, the march will be completely peaceful. The agency said the protesters will

travel in vehicles to the three main protest venues-Sindhu, Tikri and Ghazpur, to participate in a “walking” march to the parliament. It added that the date of the event will be announced in the next few days. From April 1, the farmers’ union will increase its agitation on the law. They said that from April 10, they will block the KMP highway for 24 hours. The march was originally scheduled to be held on February 1st, budget day. However, the event was cancelled after a violent incident occurred during the tractor march of Farmers on Republic Day. The farmers’ union claimed that the violence was part of the government’s conspiracy to disrupt most of

its peaceful protests. Farmers worry that with the help of the new law, large corporate houses will eliminate traditional crop markets, leading to their exploitation. They also claimed that the centre wanted to cancel the minimum support price system. The centre claims that these laws aim to eliminate the role of middlemen by providing more ways for farmers to sell their crops. They assured the protesters that the MSP system would not be scrapped. Several rounds of negotiations between the centre and farmers failed to break the deadlock.

LEADING BUSINESS FIGURE DECLARED AS Unite launches hotline and campaign HIGH SHERIFF OF THE WEST MIDLANDS to get a ‘new deal’ for Amazon A leading business figure in the region has been appointed as High Sheriff of the County of West Midlands. Louise Bennett OBE DL, Chief Executive of the Coventry & Warwickshire Chamber of Commerce, was appointed to one of the oldest ceremonial positions in the UK during a ‘virtual’ Declaration Ceremony, led by Her Majesty’s Lord-Lieutenant and Mr Justice Jeremy Baker, Presider of the West Midlands Circuit. Over 180 people were invited to witness the historic proceedings which were broadcast from the Chamber offices. Guests also had the opportunity to see an exciting preview of Coventry 2021 – UK City of Culture, by Martin Sutherland, Chief Executive of the Coventry City of Culture Trust. Louise, who has been Chief Executive of the Chamber of Commerce since 2003, said she was looking to bring a fresh, modern perspective to the office of High Sheriff and make it more inclusive, while adding value to the region. As part of her shrieval year Louise will focus on recognising the importance of leadership in business and the community and providing opportunities for young people, with an emphasis on those in care system. Over the coming months Louise will highlight the work of inspiring individuals in local businesses, communities, workplaces and the voluntary sector – including those who work tirelessly to keep people safe. As part of this, Louise is looking to maximise the social, economic and cultural opportunities created by Coventry’s UK City of Culture celebrations – which start in May – reaping benefits for Coventry, Warwickshire and the wider West Midlands region. It is also the first time in 21 years a representative from Coventry has taken the regional role since

workers in the West Midlands

David Burbidge CBE DL who was a previous High Sheriff of the West Midlands and is now, of course, Chairman of the Coventry City of Culture Trust, making Louise’s new role even more exciting. The mother-of-two, who has also been a foster carer for the past eight years, will also promote the importance of investing in children and young people, in particular the thousands of vulnerable individuals in the care system. Over the next 12 months she will raise awareness of the importance of surrounding them with positive influences and affording them the same opportunities in society. She said: “The primary role of the office of the High Sheriff is to support the judiciary, so one of my early priorities will be to reach out to our courts, the police, prison service and probation among others, to see how we can all work more closely together to improve opportunities for all young people, achieving positive outcomes. “Similarly, we will be looking to promote the importance of leadership and will give focus to some of those unsung leaders in our communities.” Louise’s appointment is testa-

ment to her achievements in Coventry and Warwickshire over almost two decades. In 2007 she was awarded the OBE for her services to enterprise and in 2015 was made a Deputy Lieutenant of West Midlands, supporting the Lord Lieutenant in representing Her Majesty The Queen and promoting the prestigious Queens Award for Enterprise to businesses. She is also a qualified counsellor and has devoted many hours of her free time volunteering for a local bereavement charity to provide a listening ear to people suffering with grief, loss and trauma. Louise is one of just 55 High Sheriffs serving the counties of England and Wales in the yearlong appointment. An independent, non-political Royal appointment the role dates back to Saxon times when the Shire reeve was responsible for maintaining law and order within a shire. Historically, the role also involved collecting taxes due to the Monarch. Over the years the role has evolved and today focuses on work with crime prevention agencies, the emergency services and the voluntary sector.

Unite, Britain’s leading union, has opened a confidential whistle-blowing hotline for Amazon workers across the West Midlands including in Rugeley, Walsall, Stoke, Rugby, Coventry, and Droitwich. The union has begun a national newspaper and digital Facebook advertising campaign to alert Amazon workers that they can blow the whistle and expose poor treatment free from reprisals by calling 08000 141 461 or visiting the https://actiononamazon.org/ hotline/. The hotline coincides with the launch of the campaign alliance ‘Action on Amazon’ that is demanding a ‘new deal’ for Amazon workers, including a union and a greater share of the firm’s enormous profits. The West Midlands is home to three major Amazon fulfilment centres, with huge sites in Rugeley, Coventry and Rugby. Today (Wednesday 31 March) campaigners will also unfurl a giant banner at Birmingham Council House and Coventry Cathedral to mark the launch of the nationwide campaign as part of a series of regional launches. Against a backdrop of reports of

poor working conditions, Amazon workers have been essential during the Covid crisis. The company increased its permanent workforce by one third (10,000) in 2020 as well as taking on 20,000 additional seasonal staff. The company almost doubled its profit in 2020 compared to 2019 and Jeff Bezos is now ranked the world’s richest man. But Amazon stops any attempts by workers to gain a collective voice of their own. It has failed to sign up to either the United Nations Global Compact or the Ethical Trading Initiative – bodies that recognise the right of all workers to a collective voice and are signed up to by most of the biggest names on the high street. The union is now calling on Amazon’s Jeff Bezos to sign up to a ‘new deal’, including commitments that recognise workers’

right to unionise. Unite executive officer Sharon Graham said: “Unite has opened a confidential hotline for Amazon workers in the West Midlands to blow the whistle on poor treatment and working practices. “Amazon attacks all attempts by workers to gain a collective voice of their own. This is why Unite is launching ‘Action on Amazon’ to give Amazon workers a voice, so they don’t have to rely on whistle-blowing or calling confidential hotlines. “Jeff Bezos has become the world’s richest man off the backs of workers who have played a crucial part in so many people’s lives during the pandemic. It is prime time Amazon gave workers in the West Midlands the right to be in a Union and to do so without interference, bullying and intimidation.”

WASTE TO ENERGY GIANTS GIVEN GREENLIGHT FOR PLANNING PERMISSION OF £300 MILLION TEESSIDE PROJECT Two of the UK’s leading waste to energy companies – Low Carbon Ltd and PMAC Energy – have this month announced that planning consent has been granted for a new £300 million pound state-of-the-art waste to energy centre on the site of the former Corus Steel works. The Redcar Energy Centre – which is set for completion in 2025 – forms a cornerstone development for the UK’s largest industrial zone as part of the South Tees Development Corporation’s ambitious redevelopment objectives to provide heat and electricity to advanced manufacturing facilities and residential properties in the local area. And with the site providing excellent

road, rail and port facilities to both the UK and European waste markets it is expected to divert between 350,000 and 490,000 tons of refuse derived fuels per annum away from UK landfill, generate enough energy to power over 100,00 homes and deliver more than £300million of inward investment to the region. This will include the employment of over 400 local and highly skilled workers during its 36-month construction phase with the availability of over 100 full time operational jobs. In line with its ambitions to be a greener, more efficient and lower cost solution to landfill and export and – in partnership with the Net Zero Teesside Carbon Capture project located adja-

cent to the site – the plant is committed to zero emission energy from waste. Speaking about the project Rob Lewis, MD at PMAC Energy said: “Redcar is the perfect site for the location of this plant. It has always been a long-term goal of PMAC Energy to develop a large-scale sustainable Energy from Waste recovery centre in the North East and we are thrilled to have the support of Low Carbon in developing the Redcar Energy Centre. Using our extensive experience, we have designed a smart, flexible solution for both waste management and energy recovery to support the expanding list of future developments in neighbouring areas.”

Occupying a 25-acre site within Redcar Bulk Transport, and alongside the River Tees, the Redcar Energy Centre is a joint venture between Low Carbon and PMAC Energy, both of which are vastly experienced in delivering waste to energy schemes, with Low Carbon having six assets currently in development across the UK and Europe. Roy Bedlow, Founder and Chief Executive of Low Carbon added: “The 49.9MW subsidy-free Redcar Energy Centre will use proven conventional technology to provide a reliable source of controllable energy for more than 100,000 homes. Not only this but it adds flexibility to the fuel and recycling supply chains and provides hundreds of

jobs to an area with a proud industrial heritage. “Low Carbon is delighted to bring forward our third consented waste project in the UK and to use our experience in developing large-scale renewable and low-carbon energy projects to help deliver this project in the Tees Valley.” As part of the partnership’s continued effort to communicate with local residents and stakeholders, Low Carbon and PMAC Energy has launched a website where further information on the project is available, including frequently asked questions and stakeholder communication. This is available at http://redcarenergy.com.

7 WAYS TO STAY MOTIVATED AT WORK DURING THE CHALLENGING TIMES With most of the country on strict lockdown and no prospect of returning to the office any time soon, 2021 is playing out like much of last year so far, and people all over the country are understandably frustrated and tired. With uncertainty around the future and remote working continuing for most, staying motivated at work is crucial for us to maintain positive momentum and mindset this year. For 2021, a recent study by YouGov shows changing careers is still within the top 5 resolutions for Britons, particularly within the 18-24 age group, and more employees are looking to climb the career ladder this year. As we’ve settled into new work, flexible schedules and working remotely, managing work-life balance may be slightly more straightforward, but staying motivated may be challenging, especially in January Here are seven ways to help boost your motivation at work all year round, according to Workspace Specialists Instant Offices: 1.Prioritise Mental Health Now more than ever, mental health needs to come first. Uncertainty from

AW Facts Did you know? Starbucks’ round tables were created specifically so customers would feel less alone

the pandemic and additional stresses make it even more difficult for us to focus. On the one hand, you might be throwing yourself into work to avoid having to address other issues, leading to burnout, or you’re completely detached from work because of stress from COVID, lockdown and other elements. Now is the time to put yourself first to flourish this year. 2. Practice Gratitude With all the uncertainty and stress from the pandemic, it’s very easy to become despondent, making it even more chal-

lenging to be motivated for work. Being thankful for what you have can lift your spirits. Dr Robert Emmons, an expert on the science of gratitude, has found that those who practice gratitude at work have better relationships with themselves and others, allowing them to work better. 3 Find Career Support More content is available online than ever before due to most people offering services, classes and expertise online during lockdown. Take charge of your career track this year by finding a mentor willing to share their insights and experi-

ence. In addition to guiding you on career growth and decision making, their constructive feedback can help you expand your skillset. Fortune 500 companies understand the value of mentorship – 71% offer formal mentoring programs to their employees. 4. Stay Busy Around 40% of UK employees admit to being bored at work, and more than half think their existing skills are being wasted. Boredom at work is a significant source of stress and can lead to depression and disinterest. Ensure you take

regular breaks during long tasks, even when working from home, but if you’re in a quiet period, keep yourself busy by learning a new skill that can bolster your career. 5. Upskill Yourself Increase your value at work by learning a new skill. If you’re working from home and have more time on your hands, taking an online course or reading up on something you’re interested in can only benefit you and your career. During lockdown in the UK, 24% tried to learn a new language, while 19% brushed up on IT and digital skills. 6.Use Holiday Time Having small breaks throughout the year instead of saving all of your holidays for the end of the year can really benefit your mental health in the long run. Even if you’re working from home, taking some time away from your devices, emails and workstation can be very refreshing. You don’t need to venture far from home for a holiday either. If restrictions allow it, go for a walk or simply get outside to restimulate your mental space. 7. Ask for an Increase As of August 2020, 37% of Britons think they deserve to be paid more for their jobs, according to YouGov. A poll of 5,000 people showed 68% hadn’t received a pay rise or promotion in the last year, leading to unhappiness at work. If you’re committed to your job but need more to keep you motivated, it’s definitely time to stop stalling and ask for a raise. Nobody knows what 2021 will bring but taking charge of our happiness one step at a time will help contribute to a better work-life ahead for the new year.

TOUQEER BUTT ANNOUNCES LAUNCH OF DEBUT SINGLE “EK HI TO DIL” ‘Ek hi to Dil’ comes straight from the heartstrings of Touqeer Butt, an up-and-coming British-Asian artist on the horizon. Having signed with Zee Music company, his song first debuted on their official YouTube channel on 6th January 2021. Touqeer has been singing from a young age and is finally ready to share this talent with the world in this charmingly romantic track. Having worked as a radio presenter and producer, Touqeer has worked with artists, actors and musicians closely and knows just what it takes to weave a rhythmic story. Part of this talent comes directly from his classical music training in vocals from the AR Rehman Foundation, KM Music Conservatory. It was there that he first developed his musical signature; one made through the marriage of semi-classical Qawwali and Sufi music with more modern Bollywood beats. What makes Touqeer’s sound unique isn’t just the balance of the old and the new but also the deeply personal way in which he creates music. There is

something delicate about ‘Ek hi to Dil’; a feeling that stems directly from the vocals and the cadence of his voice. With 154k views in the six weeks since it was released, it seems like the listeners agree with Touqeer’s sentiments. The opening notes are immediately inviting and beautiful in their simplicity. The listener gets an immediate sense of familiarity, knowing that they too must have felt the same emotions at some point in their lives. The track has been received well by artists, industry professionals and the public alike with one listener appreciating the “Beautiful lyrics and soulful singing…” Soulful is the right word and energy that one recognizes immediately at the beginning. The song is almost a journey in the manner in which it leads you through its rhythms and vocals, allowing you to not only relate to the message but also understand the inherent charm of being in love.

association. With an exemplary cast and a story that is unique yet steeped in history, we look forward to continuing to entertain our customers the world over.” Actor Akshay Kumar added, “The story of Ram Setu is one that has always intrigued and inspired me: it represents strength, bravery and love, and uniquely

Indian values that have formed the moral and social fabric of our great country. Ram Setu is a bridge between generations past, present and future. I look forward to telling the story of a significant part of Indian heritage, especially for the youth and I am happy that, with Amazon Prime Video, the story will cut across geographies and strike a chord with viewers across the world.” Adding to the excitement Vikram Malhotra, Founder & CEO of Abundantia Entertainment, said, “In India, mythology, religion and history are deeply inter-twined. They form the nerve system of our nation and have always given us the foundation for great, epic storytelling. Ram Setu is a story formed on facts, science and historical heritage and is anchored in the deep belief of Indians since centuries We have had a wonderful association with Amazon Prime Video for our successful Amazon Original Series Breathe and Breathe: Into The Shadows as well as for films like Shakuntala Devi, and the upcoming tentpole series - The End, also starring Akshay Kumar. I am thrilled to collaborate with Amazon once again for the opportunity to share this amazing story with a global audience.” Amazon Prime Video will be the worldwide exclusive streaming partner for Ram Setu following its theatrical release.

NHS ROLLS OUT CAPSULE CAMERAS TO TEST FOR CANCER Miniature cameras which patients can swallow to get checked for cancer are being trialled across the NHS. The imaging technology, in a capsule no bigger than a pill, can provide a diagnosis within hours. Known as a colon capsule endoscopy, the cameras are the latest NHS innovation to help patients access cancer checks at home. Traditional endoscopies mean patients need to attend hospital and have a tube inserted whereas the new technology means that people can go about their normal day. An initial group of 11,000 NHS patients in England will receive the capsule cameras in more than 40 parts of the country.

The NHS has prioritised cancer care during the coronavirus pandemic and the latest figures show that hospitals carried out more than two cancer treatments for every patient they treated for Covid-19. In December alone, more than 25,000 patients were treated for cancer and more than 200,000 people came forward for checks – 13,000 more than the same month the previous year. Professor Peter Johnson, NHS clinical director for cancer said: “From the cutting edge technology of these colon capsules to Covid protected hubs and chemo home deliveries, the NHS has fast tracked new ways of treating and diagnosing cancer – all while responding to the corona-

virus pandemic. “Endoscopy services continue and thanks to the hard work of NHS staff, cancer treatment and

MY FIT LIFE WITH

RAMADAN PREPARATIONS BEGIN

Preparations are well underway for the holy month of Ramadan and those observing the fasts know just how quick paced it can be, but when used correctly, Ramadan can present the perfect opportunity to show reverence to Allah and escape from the pace of everyday life. The month is of huge importance across the Islamic world and involves Muslims focusing on spiritual gains by guarding their hunger, thirst, frustration, irritation and sexual attraction. Tips for a healthier Ramadan

Suhur

The Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him, highly recommend eating this pre-dawn meal before a day of fasting. While you may want to pass to catch some more sleep, remember that you can always take a catnap while you’re fasting, but you won’t be able to eat or drink. To make it easier, set out utensils and dry food on the table before going to bed so you can quickly eat and go back to sleep after Suhur

Afternoon nap

Experts say you don’t need more than a 15-minute siesta to really refresh you. During lunch hour, find a quiet spot, set the alarm on your watch/cell phone and nap. This can help your body adjust to the daily Ramadan1 schedule that requires early waking for Suhur.

Moderate Iftar

A healthy Iftar goes hand in hand with the traditions: starting with 2 dates, then a glass of water or laban, then start the meal with a warm bowl of soup, a salad and the main course. Of course moderation is key to health.

Keep it balanced

A balanced main dish at Iftar should contain a source of carbohydrates like rice, pasta, potatoes or burghul, as well as some form of protein like beef, chicken or fish, in addition to cooked vegetables. Balance and moderation are the key to health!

Take a walk

Before you fall over from exhaustion after Iftar and dinner, take a short walk around the block or just around your building. The change of environment and exposure to fresh air may just wake you up in time for your prayer.

Plenty of Water

Don’t forget to drink plenty of water during the holy month of Ramadan. At least 8 glasses distributed in small quantities so not to feel bloated. To prevent thirst, avoid foods that are too spicy or salty, and consume more fruits and vegetables that are refreshing!

AVI SAMRA

lead to weight gain. Eating a healthy Iftar, eating starters and sweets in moderation, choosing more fruits and vegetables, avoiding sweetened beverages, and being active everyday will help you maintain your weight.

Struggling with motivation?

I put my hands up, I often struggle with motivation. If working out was easy then we would always be motivated! Some days, I have absolutely no motivation to work out. I’ve come to realise that it’s ok, there is no way we can be motivated 100% of the time, that just isn’t realistic. Some days, when my motivation isn’t there, I just have to reply on commitment and dedication to get it done. When every fibre of my being doesn’t want to train, I dig deep and just get it done because my goals are important.

Suhoor Suggestions

Suhoor is a vital meal in Ramadan. It gives you strength and vitality for the day and can make fasting easier and tolerable. Make sure that this meal is rich in slowly absorbed Carbohydrates such as whole grain breads, rice and whole grain cereals that can help maintain your blood sugar levels. People who suffer from headache or dizziness due to low blood sugar levels during the fasting period should break the fast at Iftar time by starting with 2-3 dates which will help replenish blood sugar levels.

Follow the Prophet’s golden rule of one-third This especially needs to be said in Ramadan. We should strive to have no more than one-third food, one-third liquid and onethird air in our stomachs when eating.

Everything in moderation

Some people tend to eat more during Ramadan and this can

REASONS BEHIND POOR HEALTH

The Physical reasons for feeling tired are many and if addressed correctly, can subject an individual to a new leash of energy release. Are you getting enough sleep? : It is recommended an individual gets up to eight hours of sleep a night. Stress, Alcohol, pain and digestive problems can all contribute to a disturbed sleep amongst many other conditions. Try to eat your evening meal at least two hours before you sleep. In the same way, taking pain relief on time and ensuring you eat light at night; will help to promote a good sleep pattern. Are you drinking enough? Being dehydrated or not consuming enough fluid can give rise to headaches and fatigue. Other problems associated with this are constipation, urine infections Dry skin conditions. One should aim to drink at least eight glasses of water a day. It’s easy to calculate and manage this by having two glasses of water after every five hours. Do remember that, caffeine based fluids like Coffee and Tea can cause you to pass urine more often and Aggravate dehydration! Medical related problems: People who suffer from underlying Heart disease, Lung problems, Anemia, Kidney problems and Diabetes will more than often present to their GP, with tiredness as their initial presentation. Feeling short of breath, Dizziness, lightheadedness, can all be a sign of these underlying conditions. Many of the above are stabilized with adequate dosages of medications, with associated lifestyle

Feeling tired all the time?

advice. Moderate exercise in the above can all improve a person’s ability to feel more alert and reenergized. The more isolated medical problems associated with Tiredness are : Lack of Iron – Not ingesting the recommended seven pieces of fruit and vegetables a day can lead to iron deficiency. Women who have heavy blood loss during their period, or bleeding from elsewhere can lead to a lack of Iron which is important in the production of Blood cells . A deficiency of Iron can lead to Anemia associated with shortness of breath , fatigue and tiredness , palpitations and dizziness , Iron is found in foods such as Red Meat , Dairy products , Green vegetables , Apples . You may find you are given a course of iron tablets to help bring your levels up to normal if

your iron is found to be low in a blood test . Thyroid Problems: The Thyroid Gland sits in the middle of the neck at the front and is responsible for overseeing every single chemical reaction in the body . It regulates our temperature , the rate of digestion , keeps energy levels up amongst the many other functions it has . The Thyroid gland secretes the Thyroid hormone that is involved in kick starting these various reactions in the body . If you feel colder more than normal, find yourself fatigued and tired , sleepy , gaining weight, having heavy periods in women , as well as hair loss and some memory loss, you may find it useful to ask your GP to perform blood tests for your Thyroid gland . If you have an underactive thyroid you will usually

be placed on a medication for life, to reverse the symptoms you are suffering from. Some people, if diagnosed with an underactive Thyroid may be at risk of falling into a coma if they do not take medication properly , or take none at all . Liver Conditions: Checking the Liver Enzymes for abnormalities can usually pick up any signs of alcohol abuse in a person who takes the exceeded recommended amount of alcohol and feels tired all the time . The recommended intake is 14 units a week for men and women both . Vitamin D deficiency: On the rise now in the UK, people with vitamin D deficiency will complain of Fatigue and often aching limbs. It is usually women of child bearing age . This is most commonly due to a lack of Calcium in the body which is converted from Vitamin D to support healthy Bone strength. One natural source is sunlight, Oily fish, dairy products and Pulses also have high reserves of Vitamin D . In pregnancy, Women dilute their own calcium levels towards healthy bone formation in the fetus, They also become deficient whilst breastfeeding. If you feel you may suffer from any of the above symptoms or signs, get going to see your GP today. It’s a very common problem feeling tired all the time. And most cases don’t need any intervention at all. Why wait? When you can make a difference to your health and life. Your new beginning should start now!

These are something I do when I’m struggling to get motivated: 1) Prepare I train early mornings before the kids are awake. The night before I take out my workout clothes, write my training plan, get my headphones ready and water bottle. So that in the morning, everything is set up. There is nothing worse than feeling unmotivated and then trying to get all your bits and pieces ready for a workout. So try and set yourself up so that when its workout time, everything is ready for you to go. 2) Post workout Think of something nice you will do after your workout. For me, I think about sitting down having my super strong coffee and breakfast. This will give you something to look forward too once you’ve finished working out. It could be something as simple as a nice hot shower! 3) Music I always have music on when I train but some days I will put the volume up higher. Quite often, I’ll be doing some bhangra in between lifting heavy weights! This makes the whole workout more enjoyable and feels less like a chore. You have to have fun and bring your own personality to training sessions. 4) Bigger picture I try not just to think about that one single workout, I think about my overall goals and how this one workout is helping me achieve those goals. Instead of saying ‘I really don’t want to do this’ say ‘if I work out it means I’m closer to reaching my goal’. If you are feeling unmotivated right now, try some of the tips above and hopefully it will make a difference! THE SHADES OF INDIAN FOOD

“ Indian food is

different from rest of the world not only in taste but also in cooking methods. It reflects a perfect blend of various cultures and ages. Just like Indian culture, food in India has also been influenced by various civilizations, which have contributed their share in its overall development and the present form.

AW Facts Did you know? Apples give you more energy than coffee

Prawn and Pomfret.

Foods of India are better known for its spiciness. Throughout India, be it North India or South India, spices are used generously in food. But one must not forget that every single spice used in Indian dishes carries some or the other nutritional as well as medicinal properties.

Food in the north India, to begin with, Kashmiri cuisines reflect strong Central Asian influences. In Kashmir, mostly all the dishes are prepared around the main course of rice found abundantly in the beautiful valley. Another delicious item cooked here is the ‘Saag‘ that is prepared with a green leafy vegetable known as the ‘Hak‘. But on the other hand states like the Punjab, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh show high consumption of chapatis as staple food. Again, these chapatis are prepared with a variety of flours such as wheat, rice, maida, besan etc. Besides chapatis other closely related breads baked in these regions include Tandoori, Rumaali and Naan etc. However in the northern region impact of Mughlai food is quite obvious.

West Indian Food In western India, the desert cuisine is famous for its unique taste and varieties of food. Rajasthan and Gujarat are

In Goa, that is further down towards south, one can notice Portuguese influence in the cooking style as well as in the dishes. Some of the major dishes of this regiun are the sweet and sour Vindaloo, duck baffad, sorpotel and egg molie etc.

South Indian Food the states that represent the desseert flavor of Indian food. Here an immense variety of dals and achars (pickles/preserves) is used that simply substitutes the relative lack of fresh vegetables in these areas.

East Indian Food In the eastern India, the Bengali and Assamese styles of cooking are noticeable. The staple food of Bengalis is the yummy combination of rice and fish. Usually the Bengalis love eating varieties of fishes. A special way of preparing the delicacy known as ‘Hilsa‘ is by wrapping it in the pumpkin leaf and then cooking it. Another unusual ingredient that is commonly used in the Bengali cooking is the ‘Bamboo Shoot’. Various sweets prepared in this region, by using milk include the ‘Roshogollas‘,

‘Sandesh‘, ‘Cham-cham‘ and many more. In the states like Maharashtra, the food is usually a mix of both north as well as south cooking styles. Here people use both the rice and the wheat with same interest. Along the coastline of Mumbai a wide variety of fishes is available. Some of the delicious preparations include dishes like the Bombay

In the southern India, the states make great use of spices, fishes and coconuts, as most of them have coastal kitchens. In the foods of Tamil Nadu use of tamarind is frequently made in order to impart sourness to the dishes. It simply distinguishes the Tamil Food from other cuisines. The cooking style of Andhra Pradesh is supposed to make excessive use of chilies, which is obviously to improve the taste of the dishes. In Kerala, some of the delicious dishes are thelamb stew and appams, Malabar fried prawns, Idlis, Dosas, fish molie and rice puttu. Another famous item of this region is the sweetened coconut milk. Yet another dish is Puttu, which is glutinous rice powder steamed like a pudding in a bamboo shoot.

FANTASTIC FOODS TO HAVE AT RAMADAN

Dates Dates are a blessed food mentioned numerous times in the Quran and they are amazing and excellent to include as part of your suhoor meal. Whole oat pudding Oats are a great source of fibre that slow down the release of energy and keep you fuller for longer. Steel-cut oats, which take around 15 minutes to cook, contain even more fibre than other oat varieties. You can cook the oats in milk for a more rich taste. Sweeten your oats with a drizzle of honey, then mix in some dried fruits and top it up with pumpkin seeds and you’re good to go! Peanut butter and banana Peanut butter is an excellent protein source, and it’s filled with healthy monounsaturated fat, which has a satiating effect. Spread on whole grain bread and pair it with sliced bananas. Why bananas you ask? Well, because the yellow fruit is a source of resistant starch, which helps many people to feel full up. Bananas can also help keep those mid-morning cravings away. Poached Eggs Eggs are considered to be a healthy basis of protein and contain vitamin D, although they are avoided by some of due to their high cholesterol content. Add the poached eggs on top of grainy toasts and top them off with sliced tomatoes for a full nutritional

breakfast. Watermelon and halloumi As the name suggests, watermelon is a juicy fruit and it is a great way to hydrate for only 40 calories per cup. If it is combined with white halloumi cheese, it would sustain a great filling effect. Fruit smoothie Not every smoothie is the same. A lot of smoothies have high amounts of sugar and can leave you feeling hungry. The one we have chosen is quite the opposite. Combined with dry chia seeds, yoghurt, grapes with skin intact and ice, then blended together to achieve a smooth and yummy drink. This smoothie would contain omega 3, fibre, and protein all in one go,

while it is keeping your blood sugar balanced. Quinoa porridge Quinoa is a vegetarian food source which is rich in protein and fibre. It also makes a great gluten-free alternative to oats. Cook it with coconut milk and dice in some apples and cinnamon for a great tasting meal. Frozen yoghurt parfait with granola and berries Craving for something sweet? Storebought plain old frozen yoghurt is your answer and it only takes a couple of minutes to prepare it in a bowl. Make sure to select satiating toppings, which include fruits, berries and granola.

West Midlands invest in Bitcoin and value it more than property: new national survey

West Midlands is in the top three regions in Britain investing in cryptocurrency and they would sooner buy Bitcoin than property, according to a new national survey. The survey of 2,000 Brits, commissioned by money app Ziglu and conducted by OnePoll, found that 14 percent of West Mids residents had bought crypto, beaten only by East Mids (15 percent), Northern Ireland (15 percent) and London (30 percent). In a sign that cryptocurrency is gaining legitimacy in the eyes of the public, Bitcoin is considered a wiser investment than property and almost equal to gold in the West Mids. Asked how they would invest £100, more people from the region chose Bitcoin in their top three investments

Mark Hipperson, Founder and CEO of Ziglu, said: “When Elon Musk’s company Tesla bought $1.5 billion of Bitcoin, 28 percent) it was yet another step towards than real estate mainstream acceptance of cryptocurrency. (20 percent) and almost the Now that we’re firmly on that track, same number this survey shows how important it chose gold (29 is to spread the word in the West percent). Almost half (49 percent) stated they had none, followed closely by East Anglia (45 percent) and the North East (44 percent). Almost a third of West Mids respondents (31 percent) are curious about buying crypto but more than four in ten (44 percent) have no intention of doing so. The regions with the highest numbers of crypto investors are London (30 percent), the

East Midlands (15 percent) and Northern Ireland (15 percent). The survey also revealed a gender divide on the reasons for buying crypto. Men mainly bought crypto to make money on it (53%) while women chose to invest after hearing positive feedback about it (45%).

INTELLIGENT AUTOMATION – THE KEY TO PERSONALISED CARE IN A GROWING WORLD Almost every aspect of our lives is streamlined by technology and the pace at which this digital transformation is taking place has increased significantly due to the current Covid-19 Pandemic. The dynamic nature of the Healthcare world – and especially the impact of the Pandemic – has driven an even greater need for clinicians to have access to all patient information in real time whilst at the same time being able to access this information from anywhere. Interoperability and ensuring this information is safe and secure are absolute prerequisites. A tailored approach to healthcare Information, communication, speed and customisation deliver a tailored approach to healthcare for the individual and maintains a personal touch in a world with over 7 billion people. Without using technology to deliver this approach, the individual is lost amongst the masses having their needs dictated to them based on general decision making instead of personalised decision making. It is only through technology that the individual can retain their voice and stand up for their needs. This is “people driven technology”, not “technology forced upon people”. Technology can be used to ensure that the rights of an individual and the right to be considered on a personal basis is respected as the population grows and demand of essential services increases. The importance of Interoperability In order to give the individual a voice and bring about the age of personalised care, the UK healthcare system is undergoing a mass overhaul of its technology systems. All of the technology systems need to be able to talk to each other in a secure way. The process involves healthcare professionals, technology companies and cyber security professionals to work side by side and in step

with each other. More personalised data means better decision making and even opening up the possibilities of preventative and predictive care to be one step ahead of potential problems instead of trying to solve them as they arise. The benefits of Integrated Care are: • The flow of information across health and social care will be faster and more consistent. • Due to immediate and secure access of complete accurate health and care records, better decisions can be made. • This leads to a better experience of care for the patient. • People can move faster through the health and care system, which can save time, money and lead to faster access to care. Intelligent automation In order to reach this new horizon in healthcare, we need to get the foundation right, the digital architecture of the health and care system. The demands on Healthcare professionals over recent months has highlighted the need for their time to be spent with patients more than ever and far less time working through disparate information to support patient care. Intelligent Automation of Clinical Information is an enabler for this new way of working. Numerous vendors have brought to market automation solutions and many have delivered real tangible value to the NHS but the ability to integrate new information into a patient record using technology such as Robotic Process Automation (RPA) whilst maintaining the inherent speed of access to the information has eluded the market to date. A solution has been developed by Darren Atkins, Chief Technology Officer (Automation and AI – NHS) that when used alongside MediViewer™, through utilisation of the open

API structure integrating the BluePrism Cloud RPA engine with MediViewer™, Healthcare professionals are able to access new information from other key hospital systems through the MediViewer™ UI as a single source view. The speed of integration is incredible and demonstrates clearly the value of technology partners working together for the greater good of the Health service. Faster access to information – improving the patient experience MediViewer™ from IMMJ Systems is an Electronic Document Management System (EDMS) which has become firmly established as the EDMS of choice amongst clinicians and the wider NHS in recent years. The intuitiveness of the UI coupled with the inherent speed of access to information has delivered a step change to the way clinicians deliver patient care and equally helped to improve the patient experience. “Leveraging the power of Blue Prism Cloud to interact directly with IMMJ’s MediViewer™ Open API allows the rapid upload of clinical documentation without the need to use the front-end user interface. Using existing processes within the NHS Digital Exchange, for example, retrieving GP referrals from ERS with the MediViewer™ API allows real-time uploading of clinical documentation without any human input. The list of opportunities is endless.” – Darren Atkins, Chief Technology Officer, NHS.

CHALLENGES FOR AVIATION INDUSTRY

By: Rida Khan ( Aviation Author) | Instagram A/c : aviationauthor.ridakhan

After facing losses in the year 2020, we have now moved on in 2021 which gives the light of hope to survive from COVID-19 by vaccination. This will open the doors for the travellers to travel around the world.

Aviation is getting back to the sky by recovering the losses and finding out ways and measures to make travelling easy as it used to be. But this recovery is followed by many challenges which the aviation industry have to face. According to the IATA report: Airline financial performance is expected to see a significant turn for the better in 2021 even if historically deep losses prevail. By the end of 2021 stronger revenues will improve the situation but the first half of 2021 still looks extremely challenging. Passenger numbers are expected to grow to 2.8 billion in 2021. That would be a billion more trav-

Challenges which aviation industry are facing to get back: 1.) Many airlines have disappeared or have been filed for bankruptcy and some are struggling to get out of the danger by getting taken over by strong players. This will give a big impact on the travellers decision to choose the airline to travel. 2.) Financial support is the biggest factor to survive in the crisis but this factor is being damaged in many airline companies. Only the government can help to survive them in this recovery period . This support will make a bridge to recover the important investments and can save the jobs in the aviation industry. 3.) Many airplanes were retired due to pandemic in 2020. The higher retirement rates of the biggest planes is now a critical challenge for Airbus and Boeing. As the demand for the travellers will rise airline companies will have to adjust with the smaller jetliners or have to make different routes to travel. 4.) Every country has different rules for quarantine but some countries have not opened their borders till they don’t get the vaccines. This is a high risk challenge as the travellers can’t visit those places which they desire to visit . This might make travelling slow to some part of the world. 5.) One way that many airline companies have opted to survive in the year 2020 was reducing their workforce. They furloughed or fired the pilots , crew members, ground staff from their jobs. Now as travelling is coming back airline companies will need more Human Resources to manage the things. And for this they have to again employ a new workforce which will take a lot of time. As they have to train them according to their work environment. This will be one of the challenges which the companies have to face while getting recovered.

ellers than in 2020. Cargo side of business is expected to continue with strong performance. Improved business confidence and the important role that air cargo should play in vaccine distribution is expected to see cargo volumes grow to 61.2 million tonnes. A continued capacity crunch due to the slow reintroduction of belly capacity from passenger services combined with a higher proportion of time and temperature sensitive cargo (vaccines) will see a further 5% increase in yields. This will contribute to strong performance in cargo revenues which are expected to grow to an historic high of $139.8 billion. These are only some challenges which I have listed , there are many other challenges which airline companies are facing to recover back this year. The road of recovery is expected to be long and quite difficult but it’s not impossible. By: Rida Khan (Aviation Author)

Auto Trader launches new service to solve retailers’ part-exchange challenges Auto Trader has launched its Guaranteed Part-Exchange service following a successful beta trial to circa 1,000 retailers. This launch is part of its strategy to enable retailers to sell more cars, more profitability, with more of the buying journey completed online. Now available to all its partners, the service provides retailers with better qualified buyers with high purchase intent and a more profitable route to sourcing stock. It provides consumers the confidence of a guaranteed part-exchange price for their vehicle and the convenience of completing the process from home. The condition-based valuation will be underwritten by Manheim Auction Services, part of Cox Automotive UK, acting as an insurance policy for unwanted partexchanges. The valuation is determined using a combination of Auto Trader’s award-winning valuations and current auction data. Utilising trust and convenience to convert buyers faster Auto Trader research highlights just how common missed opportunities from partexchanges are, often as a result of a mistrust in the process. Circa 70%of buyers have a car to part-exchange as part of their next car purchase, however, 16% said having to haggle over the price with a dealer is the most annoying point. And with 48% believing retailers will offer them less for their car than the valuation they’ve received online, it’s no surprise 29% of car buyers were prepared to walk away from a deal if they were offered less than what they were expecting. This service utilises the strength and trust in the Auto Trader brand, which in a study of over 1,000[v] car buyers was identified as the most trusted website for valuations. The service can help retailers reduce lost sales, save time, and speed up cash flow by attracting highly qualified buyers who are ready to purchase. In fact, nearly two out of three (61%) consumers are more likely to purchase from

retailers who can guarantee the part-exchange price. The service also helps retailers source stock more cost-effectively, by resupplying their forecourts with a continuous flow of part-exchanges, which in doing so, not only reduces a reliance on potentially costly auctions, Auto Trader’s but also keeps commercial product stock among director, Karolina Edwards-Smajda, important step retailers. New vehicle technology could save drivers £327 million in speeding fines

Technology which can read road signs could save drivers £327 million* in speeding fines according to new research by SEAT. The study of 2,000 UK motorists found that nearly 10% admitted to being caught speeding annually, resulting in potentially millions of pounds in fines every year. Analysis by the Spanish car brand, which also found that over three quarters (76%) of drivers don’t always know what speed they are travelling at, comes as the all-new SEAT Leon – featuring the Dynamic Road Sign Display technology – continues to be a sales hit in the UK. The innovation developed by SEAT helps drivers stick to the speed limit – especially useful in areas with changeable limits. Using a front-mounted camera which detects speed limit signs, the latest SEAT models can automatically adjust their speed according to the limit in that area. It will also scan school zones and other road signs. Statistics compiled by the Department for Transport (DfT) show over 50%** of cars exceeded the speed limit on 30mph roads; while 47% of cars broke the limit on motorways in 2020. With SEAT’s own research revealing the high number of motorists caught every year, around 40% of drivers said they would want a similar technology to SEAT’s Dynamic Road Sign Display technology on their car if it was available.

As motorists return to the roads as lockdown eases, the lack of recent experience behind the wheel could be making drivers less confident, making the technology even more important in helping reduce speeds according to local limits, as well as minimizing potential fines. Richard Harrison, Managing Director of SEAT UK, commented: “It’s certainly eye opening to see that significant numbers of motorists aren’t necessarily always aware of their own speeds, but thankfully there is in-car technology – like our Dynamic Road Sign Display – already on the market to make drivers safer on the road.” The SEAT Leon has a strong track record since its introduction in 1998, selling 2.3 million vehicles worldwide, with each generation proving more popular than the last. The latest model has introduced efficient plug-in hybrid variants that continue to earn plaudits for their driving dynamics, practicality and economy.

How long should a beginner hold a plank? If you can hold a plank for 60 seconds or more it is considered ‘strong’. Less than 30 seconds is quite weak and you might be at risk for back problems.

How To Do It: Get into forearm plank position. Ensure your elbows are on the ground directly underneath your shoulders with your feet hip-width apart. Make sure your back is flat and your head and neck are in a neutral position. Drive your elbows into the floor, and squeeze your quads, glutes, and core.

Mountain Climber Mountain climbers are great for building cardio endurance, core strength, and agility. You work several different muscle groups with mountain climbers—it’s almost like getting a total-body workout with just one exercise. And because it’s a cardio exercise, you’ll get heart health benefits and burn calories.

How To Do It: Your hands should be about shoulder-width apart, back flat, abs engaged, and head in alignment. Pull your right knee into your chest as far as you can. Switch legs, pulling one knee out and bringing the other knee in. Keep your hips down, move your knees in and out as far and as fast as you can.

Bicycle Crunches What are bicycle crunches good for? The primary muscles engaged in the bicycle crunch are the rectus abdominus, hips, and obliques. Keeping your legs off the ground targets your lower abs. How To Do It: Lye down on the ground, with your lower back pressed flat into the floor and your head and shoulders raised slightly above it. Place your hands to Wolverhampton and the wider area. “The Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games is already proving to be a real catalyst for encouraging more people to get physically active. Hopefully this news will encourage people across the Black Country to get on their bikes and explore their local area.” Full details of the routes for both events have not yet been finalised and the organisers and local authorities will be engaging with all local stakeholders, including residents and business owners before confirming the details. Birmingham 2022, organisers of the Games, which will be staged from 28 July to 8 August 2022, has however confirmed that the road race will take place on a Sunday. The exact date and the details for the time trial will be unveiled in the next few weeks, when the full daily schedule for the games is set to be published. In the case of the time trial, Birmingham 2022 is working closely with partners from across the Black Country to look at a suitable routes that can showcase key landmarks and the entire local area. More information about all of the venues for the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games is available at Birmingham 2022 where you can also sign-up to receive regular updates about the Games.

lightly on the sides of your head; don’t knit your fingers behind. Bring your left knee up, moving your right elbow across your chest to meet it. Follow with your right knee and left elbow and repeat. Beginners can position their resting leg with their foot flat to the floor (above), where the well-practiced can fully extend the resting leg, raised slightly from the floor. Eating habits play a great role in the body training. Rahat says “Eat more vegetables, nuts, fruits, lean protein, and healthy fats, such as olive oil, fish oils, and avocados. Try to include healthy foods in each meal. Eat some protein for breakfast, lots of vegetables, fibres and drink water rather than calorie-laden beverages. However, moderation is a key.” Rahat trains each client individually, after he determines all information like age, gender, weight, eating habits, etc. After, he creates an exclusive training and diet program. And, of course, he takes into consideration how fast you need to gain the result, whether it is losing weight, toning the body, having healthier look or simply feeling happier with yourself. You can find and contact Rahat on Instagram @rahatfitnessworld or his YouTube channel – Rahat Shah.
