CAT AND MOUSE GAME ENDS UP IN COURT FOR TRADER SELLING ILLEGAL TOBACCO
The director of a former Walsall shop, where more than 6000 illegal cigarettes and over 1kg of hand-rolling tobacco was discovered in August 2018, has finally been brought to justice. Ramen Amini appeared before Walsall Magistrates Court on 10 January after a cat and mouse game which saw two warrants for his arrest being made due to previous failures to attend Court. He pleaded guilty to all 12 counts under The Trade Marks Act and was fined £120, ordered to pay a victim surcharge of £34 as well as a contribution to legal costs of £500. The stash of tobacco was discovered at APO Pleck supermarket Ltd, Wednesbury Road, Walsall back in August 2018 when officers visited the shop to undertake a routine advisory visit. On entering the shop, Trading Standards Officers witnessed Mr Amini throwing items under the counter which on investigation were found to be packets of illegal tobacco. A further search of the premises revealed a box and black bin liner containing large quantities of cigarettes and handrolling tobacco. The haul included a mixture of counterfeit, non-duty paid or illicit cheap white cigarettes. They were incorrectly packaged and did not carry the correct UK health warnings – often an indication that items are not genuine.
The shop did also sell genuine tobacco however Mr Amini admitted that the price he’d paid for the illegal ones, from a man selling them door to door, was much less than genuine products – another indication that something is not quite right. Councillor Garry Perry, Deputy Leader for resilient communities said, “This investigation clearly demonstrates the persistence and continued efforts our Trading standards Team in partnership with WM Police go to to investigate and bring to justice the perpetrators involved in illegal trade.” “The illegal tobacco trade is often led by organised crime groups and therefore this haul has meant that illicit items are taken out of circulation resulting in a real impact on the wider illegal trade network.” “Money from the sale of such products often goes back into the organised crime network and funds further criminality such as the drug industry, people trafficking and gun crime. “This makes it even more important that we are all vigilant and report any concerns about the genuine nature of products that we purchase to stop this taking place in our borough.”

CHANGES ANNOUNCED TO SELF-ISOLATION GUIDANCE
– wearing a face covering in indoor spaces and crowded areas – working from home if possible – maintaining social distancing – regular hand washing – reduce your contact with who might be at a higher risk of severe illness if they got COVID-19.
The Government have announced from Monday 17 January 2022, the self-isolation period for those who test positive for COVID-19 will change. This means people can leave isolation on the sixth day, providing they test negative on the fifth and sixth day with a lateral flow device (LFD) and do not have a high temperature. However, if the day 5 test is positive, they must continue to isolate, it is law. People can take further tests on subsequent days – day 6, 7, 8 or 9 until day 10. If two LFD tests taken 24 hours apart on consecutive days are negative, they can leave self-isolation. Self-isolation may continue in certain circumstances, such as for those who work with vulnerable people. The government will publish further guidance in due course. Stephen Gunther, Director of Public Health said: “We are starting to hear from local employers who are having business continuity issues due to the number of employees self-isolating. Data from the UK Health Security Agency suggests two-thirds of people are no longer infectious after five days of isolation. The change to guidance should help ease some of the pressures
they are facing but we all still need to be cautious. “I would like to remind people that the self-isolation period continues to be 10 days for people who test positive for COVID-19. You can only leave self-isolation early when you have received two negative LFD tests on two consecutive days and do not have a temperature. This will reduce the chance of people still being infectious and passing the virus on to others. Lateral flow tests can be obtained by calling 119 or by visiting gov.uk. If you are self-isolating, you cannot leave your home to collect a LFD test kit.
Stephen Gunther, Director of Public Health said:
“
The levels of COVID-19 in Walsall have increased significantly in recent weeks and continue to rise. Self-isolation is effective in preventing the spread of COVID-19 to other people.
“
If you stop self-isolating on or after day 6, it is important that you follow some key public health guidance to reduce the chance of passing COVID-19 on to others. This includes:
UNIVERSITY OF BIRMINGHAM LAUNCHES HONG KONG FOUNDATION
The University of Birmingham has launched a Hong Kong Foundation – a new initiative to offer the brightest students a chance to make the most of their talents, as well as funding research that benefits Hong Kong, the Greater Bay Area and the wider world. Harnessing the power of philanthropy among the city’s almost 3,000 strong alumni community, the University of Birmingham Hong Kong Foundation aims to accelerate progress in addressing issues that matter to Hong Kong and mainland China, such as beating diseases like cancer, combating climate change and improving public health. The Foundation will support research exchange partnerships for researchers from Birmingham, Hong Kong and mainland China, as well as the Geoffrey Ma Scholarships for students from Hong Kong, which recognise the Foundation’s first Honorary President. It will also increase exchange programmes for Birmingham students from disadvantaged communities in the UK to travel to Hong Kong to develop their cultural awareness and global leadership skills. Chaired by Ir. Dr. Conrad Wong, the eight-strong Board will meet twice a year to distribute funding to charitable priorities at the University that have an impact in Hong Kong, the mainland and beyond.
Ir. Dr. Wong commented: “I am very excited to be the first Chair of the Hong Kong Foundation and, along with the Board, to be in a position to shape how the Foundation can help strengthen Birmingham’s presence in Hong Kong. “We created the Foundation to bring together Hong Kong’s almost 3,000 strong alumni community and begin a bold new chapter in the long and special relationship between the University of Birmingham and our great city.” The University of Birmingham was built on philanthropy 120 years ago and today’s philanthropists continue to work with the University to change young lives and to improve the world for future generations. University of Birmingham Vice-Chancellor Professor Sir David Eastwood commented: “Our Hong Kong alumni have been generous in their philanthropic giving to the University of Birmingham – making contributions to scholarships and teaching laboratories, as well as research tackling Ebola and antibiotic resistance. “We are a global civic University and committed to changing lives for the better in Birmingham and beyond. The Foundation allows us to build on our successes and continue to deepen our collective impact in Hong Kong and beyond.”

A Mountain of a Challenge - Metro Bank Colleagues Climb Snowdon for Local Charity
The UK’s community bank, Metro Bank, gives every colleague a Day to Amaze – essentially a paid day off to support a local charity or good cause. Colleagues from Metro Bank’s Birmingham store chose to take on a mammoth task for their Day to Amaze by climbing Mount Snowdon in aid of Edward’s Trust, a charity which provides support to people affected by grief. Based in Birmingham, Edward’s Trust provides a variety of services – counselling, therapy and social events for parents and adults affected either by the death of a loved one or a relative suffering from a terminal illness. Birmingham Metro Bank colleagues Beth Freeman, Jessica Stringer, Gavin Conner, Simran Kaur, Charlotte Hughes, Rajpal Rai and Jazmeen Mahill hoped to raise £1,000 by climbing Mount Snowdon but thanks to the generosity of colleagues
and customers they have already raised over £2,000. “Climbing up the mountain was made just a little easier knowing every step would make a real difference”, said Metro Bank assistant store manager Jessica Stringer. “And well worth it as the views from the top were simply breath taking.” “We’re thrilled to have raised so much money for Edward’s Trust,” explained Metro Bank’s Birmingham store manager, Beth Freeman. “As a community bank, we want to make a difference to our local community. Huge thanks to everyone who helped us raise this money which we know will make a difference locally.” Metro Bank’s Birmingham store can be found at 85 to 88 High St, Birmingham B4 7TE. The store is currently open Monday – Saturday 08:30am - 6pm. Sunday: 11am - 5pm.
Dr Nick Smith, courses director and founder of The Oxford Open Learning Trust, said: “After another year of disruption, this year’s A-level students deserve tremendous credit for persevering and achieving so much. It’s brilliant to see that many have secured the results they wanted and they should be incredibly proud of their hard work. “However, with schools closing for much of the last year and students missing many hours of teaching, there will inevitably be students who don’t quite receive the grades they hoped for. “These students will naturally feel disappointed, but they shouldn’t worry, as there are a number of options available to those who don’t quite get the A-levels they expected or needed. “First of all, check out the UCAS clearing system as many institutions will still have places available. Its website will show whether your course is available somewhere else, but it’s also worth giving them a call. “If you feel that you’ve been given a grade that is too low, you can also appeal by contacting your school, who will then inform the exam board. The board will examine evidence provid-
ed by the school and decide whether any changes are needed. “Universities are expecting a high number of appeals this year, with grades calculated by teacher assessment rather than exams, and this is why results have been released earlier, to allow for this process. “You also have the option of exploring other learning pathways, like work experience or apprenticeships. Gap years are also a possibility, allowing you to travel or volunteer, but make sure you check international travel restrictions if heading abroad. “Alternatively, you could take a break from traditional education but carry on learning by either resitting your A-levels or studying new
ones while working. Distance learning is the most flexible way of doing this as everything you need is available online, so you can learn wherever and whenever is convenient for you.” To find out more about distance learning, visit https://www.ool.co.uk

WHO GOES FIRST ON THE UK HIGHWAYS ACCORDING TO THE NEW HIGHWAY CODE HIERARCHY? The addition of the hierarchy to The Highway Code is welcomed by Birmingham City Council which, like other UK councils, is increasing its active travel infrastructure which includes Places for People, cycle lanes and footpaths. Pedestrians, who are considered most at risk, will be ranked first followed by cyclists, horse riders, motorcyclists, cars, taxis, vans, minibuses. Reflecting the Government’s consultation on the safety needs of the most vulnerable road user groups, buses and lorries will be placed last. The revised Highway Code will also strengthen the messages that pedestrians have priority when seeking to cross a road and that a minimum 1.5m distance should be maintained by cars when overtaking cyclists. Local authorities may also be given new powers to fine people who park vehicles on pavements. The revisions are being made because cycling has increased more in the last year than in the previous 20 years together, according to the Department for Transport, which claims that the number of miles cycled on British roads rose by 45.7% to 5 billion. However, AA research indicates that only one-third of road-users knew about the prioritisation of pedestrians at junctions. To avoid confusion, make sure you read the Highway Code which lays down the rules about who has
priority on the UK’s roads; the revised edition should be available soon from the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency. Before then, you may read more about the revisions in the summary of the consulation of The Highway Code.
Cabinet Member for Transport and Environment, Councillor Waseem Zaffar said:
“
The official creation of hierarchy of road users in The Highway Code is good news for Birmingham City Council because we are creating more cycle lanes and more footpaths to encourage even more people to walk or cycle short-distances instead of drive because we are working towards an ambitious net-zero by 2030 target.

It’s very sad, it’s humiliating. Women are using tissue papers (as sanitary pads). Some of them are cutting their childs diapers in two, some use newspapers, some use old cloth. It’s very humiliating, and most importantly, it’s not hygienic.
“
29 January 2022 is the day when greater protection should be given to the safety of active travellers as the Government’s proposed hierarchy of road users takes effect.
Masri, Health Worker Women in Lebanon can no longer afford menstrual and basic hygiene products as plummeting economic conditions in the country have pushed 78% of the population below the poverty line. For many fe-
male refugees, it’s a case of choosing between food or hygiene items. Period Poverty is defined by the lack of access to sanitary products, a safe and hygienic place in which to use them, and the right to manage menstruation without shame or stigma. It is becoming a widespread issue in Lebanon. With no other options in sight, many have been forced to find alternatives, such as using newspapers, old cloth or tissue paper. All are very unhygienic and cause health issues that they cannot afford to treat.

Mitesh is an advisory board member for the Diversity Project, an active member of the CEO sponsor group for the gender

Recognised for both his personal work alongside professional, Mitesh has volunteered for more than 20 years for the Divine Youth Association (DYA UK), a charity inspired by the late Templeton Prize winner Pandurang Shastri Athavale.
I feel blessed to have been recognised for this important work we have been doing over the past few years. It has been a big collaborative effort and it needs to be as there is still a very long way to go. The pandemic has further increased the inequalities in our society – we need less talk and more action. If we keep doing what we’ve always done, we’ll continue to get the results that we have always got. As leaders we have a responsibility and opportunity to change ourselves, our teams, our organisations and over time the world. We must begin with empathy and compassion for our fellow human beings, create a safe space to talk and learn openly, be agile in failing fast and sharing lessons to build bridges for all those that are being left behind. I am inspired every day by the many incredible people, past and present, who are creating a more sustainable and equitable industry and world for our children.

Mitesh Sheth, outgoing CEO of leading independent investment consultant Redington, has been awarded an MBE in the Queen’s New Year Honours lists for services to diversity and inclusion within the financial services sector. Mitesh, who stepped back from his role as Redington CEO at the end of 2021 following eight years at the firm, has long been an influential force championing inclusion and diversity across financial services. During his five years as CEO, Redington experienced a level of growth that saw employee numbers go from less than 80 to over 200, all unified by a company-wide mission to help make 100 million people become financially secure – for the benefit of people and the planet. This sense of purpose has flowed authentically into the firm’s efforts to create a more trusted, sustainable and equitable industry. Under his leadership, Redington has consistently led the way on issues relating to diversity and inclusion, with the business being one of the first in the sector to dramatically reduce its gender pay gap – it has a current mean gender pay gap of 4.9%, and bonus pay gap of 3.5% (far lower than the industry average pay gap of 30% according to PWC). The firm has won praise for having one of the most open, innovative and inclusive workplace cultures. Key to its success has been a willingness to experiment, fail fast and iterate, sharing best practice along the way – from returnship programs, line manager training and en-

Amrit has been awarded an OBE in recognition for his services to Charity and Community. “
I was stunned with disbelief when I received the email notification of the honour. I’d had a difficult day and it was instantly forgotten! I feel truly humbled to have received this honour for services to charity and community. Seva, selfless service, for the community has been the ethos of our family business since it was founded, and I accept this honour not just for me, but on behalf of the generations that came before me who made huge sacrifices, took chances, and shared their spirit with me. The recognitions strengthen my resolve to continue my philanthropic work championing issues, such as women’s rights, fighting social injustice, highlighting British Sikh history and support and increase Sikh representation contribution to our fantastic Armed Torces and other key services such as the Police Force.”

the Norwegian Refugee Council’s (NRC) Country Director in Bangladesh. The origin of yesterday’s fire is unknown at this stage. However, the only temporary shelters that are allowed in the camps in Bangladesh are those made of highly flammable bamboo and tarpaulin. Refugees told NRC teams on the ground that they had to cut through the wire fencing to escape from the fire. In overcrowded settlements fenced in by barbed wire, the risk of the next disaster is always high. Asma, a single refugee mother of three living in the camps, barely escaped with her children, and had to spend the night under the open winter sky. “Everything is gone, we barely escaped with only the clothes on our back,” she said. The Norwegian Refugee Council is working with local partners today to assess needs.

ROHINGYA REFUGEE CAMPS IN BANGLADESH HIT BY SECOND FIRE IN 10 DAYS Front cover story cont’d... A massive fire broke out just before 17.00 local time yesterday, sweeping through a refugee camp in Cox’s Bazar, Bangladesh. The flames were contained to one area, Camp 16, but the damage was extensive. Over 3,600 Rohingya refugees have lost their homes, with almost 600 shelters burnt to the ground, according to local authorities. “This is the second fire in the camps in 2022 and we are only in the second week of January. Our fear is not only about what happened this time, but that future fires will cause even greater destruction and cost lives. We need to provide safe, dignified shelter for refugees using fire-retardant material, and the dangerous barbed wire fencing should be removed that divides the camps and slows the escape of people fleeing the flames,” said Roberto Vila-Sexto,

T: 0121 771 4545 BUSINESS Forget the detached house price boom, this is the property type to have performed best in the last decade
www.asianworldnews.co.uk
The latest research by Birmingham estate and lettings agent, Barrows and Forrester, reveals that terraced houses are the best property investment in the UK after experiencing stronger price growth than any other type of home over the past decade. The UK housing market has boomed. Surging demand has been met by dwindling supply to push house prices to record highs. During this boom, one common narrative has been an increasing buyer desire for larger, more spacious homes. As such, many industry commentators have reported that detached homes are the most influential driving force behind recent market success and that demand and value for detached properties is outperforming any other type of home. However, Barrows and Forrester has analysed the past ten years of British house price data and discovered that detached homes are not in fact the market leaders on a long-term basis. Between 2011 and 2021, the average annual rate of price growth for a detached home in Great Britain was 4.41%. This means that detached homes have enjoyed more growth than flats
(4.10%), but have been outperformed by both semi-detached homes, with 4.57% growth, and terraced homes with the highest overall growth of 4.70% over the ten-year period. By breaking the data down to a local level, Barrows and Forrester has also been able to shed light on what types of property have enjoyed the biggest average annual price growth in the various regions of Great Britain. Detached homes have seen the highest growth of any property type in Scotland (3.21%), North East England (2.17%), and Yorkshire & Humber (3.54%). But Semi-detached homes have led the way in six British regions between 2011 and 2021, including the West Midlands (4.38%), North West England (4.17%), South East England (5.24%), South West England (4.33%), Wales (3.82%), and the East of England (5.34%). Terraced houses have seen the strongest average annual growth among all property types in the East Midlands (4.82%), London (6.59%), and the West Midlands (4.38%). Meanwhile, despite enjoying overall average growth of 4.10% across Britain, flats have not led
the way in any specific regions. In fact, price growth for flats has consistently ranked bottom across the board in every part of the nation. Managing Director of Barrows and Forrester, James Forrester, commented:
“There is no doubt that detached homes have enjoyed a significant increase in demand over the past 18-months or so but, semi-detached and terraced homes have long been the most popular types of home and this data proves that the recent boom for detached
homes has not been enough to move it higher than the number three spot. But the biggest takeaway from this should be a celebration of how diverse our housing market is. The real winner of this story is not terraced homes, it’s the UK
housing market. Price growth has been consistently positive for all types of homes over the past decade and ranking the performance of each leaves us with less than 1% separating them all.”

CELEBRATING 25 YEARS OF SANJAY LEELA BHANSALI Sanjay Leela Bhansali completes 25 years in the Indian film industry. With nine magnum opuses like Black, Saawariya, Padmaavat, Ram Leela, Bajirao Mastani, Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam and Devdas to his name, Sanjay Leela Bhansali has carved a special niche as a filmmaker. His eye for detail, thematic style of direction and powerful storylines have left an indelible mark on Bollywood. As he completes quarter of a century in Bollywood, he is currently working on his tenth film Gangubai Kathiawadi. Celebrating his 25 years of great cinema, Bhansali Productions posted a showreel of Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s legacy on social media. The reel has taken the internet by storm and includes all the iconic spectacles, dialogues and artistes across every one of the nine movies that he has created so far. Speaking about his journey thus far, Sanjay Leela Bhansali said, “It has not always been an easy journey but I’ve thor-
oughly enjoyed myself regardless - I’ve won some and learnt some. But these 25 years would not be complete without the incredible effort of every single person I’ve worked with so far. The movie that an audience watches on their screens is a creative culmination of so many different forms of art – from the soundtrack, colours, screenplay, architecture, dialogues to every thread on every costume. It’s the fantabulous team of technicians, artistes, writers, producers and assistant directors that have been the real pillar behind every movie made. That’s why I like the call my films ‘handmade movies’. The years ahead are blank pages waiting to be written and I am itching to write them.” In his 25 years, he has put India on the global map of cinema with movies like Devdas premiering at the Cannes Film Festival in 2002. The movie was also nominated for British Academy of Film and Television Awards for Best Film Not in the English Language. His Big B and Rani Mukherji starrer, Black, inspired
by the life of Helen Keller, stood fifth in Time’s “10 Best Movies of the Year 2005” (Europe) amongst films from across the world. Not only that, but he has changed the face of Indian cinema by stirring a movement that focuses on artistic sets, clean direction and thematic backdrops. Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s signature style of highly choreographed sequences and largerthan-life mega-musicals are somehow still rooted in realism. A music connoisseur, Sanjay Leela Bhansali turned music director over the years. His movies have given us some memorable melodies such as Ram Chahe Leela, Tattad Tattad, Lahu Munh Lag Gaya, Ghoomar, Dholi Taro Dhol Baaje, Aankhon Ki Gustakhiyan, Chand
Chupa Baadal Mein, Nimbooda, Mastani, Saawariya, Jab Se Tere Naina. He has also produced movies like Gabbar Is Back, Laal Ishq, Mary Kom, Rowdy Rathore, My Friend Pintoand Shirin Farhad Ki Toh Nikal Padi. As a writer, he has 13 credits to his name and has penned some of his work including Padmaavat, Bajirao Mastani, Ram Leela, Black, Devdas and Guzaarish, amongst others. In 2015, Sanjay Leela Bhansali was honoured with the Padma Shri. He has a legacy of 38 awards to his name including National Film Awards, Filmfare Awards, Mirchi Music Awards, Screen Awards, IIFA Awards, Zee Cine Awards and Zee Gold Awards.
Ranveer Singh Reveals the plan for Rohit Shetty’s next; says, ‘It was always intended to be a franchise’
Ranveer Singh may ace several character on screen, but one role that will remain close to his and his fans’ hearts and would be hard pressed to be topped over the course of his career is Simmba. Not only was the 2018 movie a blockbuster, but the character and its quirks have also seeped into pop culture, not to mention having made a successful transition into Director Rohit Shetty’s cop universe with Sooryavanshi. Now, even though Ranveer Singh’s next is Cirkus, again with Rohit Shetty, and the excitement is no doubt high to see what the duo bring together to the table this time, there’s already chatter about Simmba 2, particularly with the latter having announced Singham 3 during the climax of Sooryavanshi.

zhou, Wuhan, Lishui, Ningbo, Nanchang, and Taizhou. The trial was set up to provide clinical evidence with a robust methodology, to help medical professionals select appropriate anaesthesia for older patients to try and reduce the development of delirium. Researchers in Birmingham and WenZhou today published the findings in JAMA. After the hip fracture surgery, delirium occurred in 6.2% of the group who had general anaesthesia, and 5.1% in those who had a regional anaesthesia. The difference between the two groups could be explained by chance. The Chief Investigator of RAGA trial, Professor Fang Gao, from the University of Birmingham, NIHR Senior Investigator, commented: “There is a high incidence of delirium after surgery in hip fracture patients, but we had no robust evidence demonstrating the effectiveness of the two most commonly used anaesthetic techniques causing delirium – creating an urgent need to investigate delirium prevention. “The causes of delirium remain poorly understood, but our trial highlights that factors such as general anaesthetic agents, that we thought may be associated with delirium, are in fact unlikely to cause delirium.” “Our trial has also provided clinical evidence on the safety of RA

CHINA-WIDE STUDY WILL BOOST UNDERSTANDING OF FATAL SURGICAL COMPLICATION
Older patients in hospitals across China took part in a major multicentre open-label randomised clinical trial that showed there was no difference in post-operative delirium in older people with a hip fracture, if they had a general anaesthesia, or a regional anaesthesia. Post-operative delirium is a common, serious, neurological, complication where people have a sudden change in their brain functions after an operation. It is more common in older people, and leads to increased death, dementia, post-traumatic stress disorder, a longer length of hospital stay, extra nursing requirements and increased healthcare costs. People with a hip fracture require an operation to fix the fracture which requires anaesthesia – classified as general anaesthesia, or regional anaesthesia. A general anaesthetic technique involves inducing sleep or loss of consciousness through inhaled or intravenous anaesthetics. Regional anaesthesia involves injecting local anaesthetic inside the spine or around the nerves to prevent pain in the leg with the hip fracture. It was commonly thought that one of the causes of delirium is a general anaesthesia. Led by the University of Birmingham and Wenzhou Medical University Second Affiliated Hospital, this randomised trial was the first of its kind in China. 950 older adult took part, from hospitals in Wen-

and GA in older patients for hip fracture surgery, helping anaesthetists in selecting appropriate anaesthesia for these patients – particularly those at high risk of POD.” The older population has grown quickly over the last 20 years in most parts of the world and the number of older people undergoing surgical procedures has increased. Hip fractures are a global health problem, with over 1.6 million patients suffering such injuries worldwide every year. Some 680 000 of these injuries occur among the 70 million elderly people in China and it is predicted that 50% of total global hip fractures will occur in Asia by 2050. Dr Thomas Jackson, Associate Professor in Geriatric Medicine and Board member of the European Delirium Association says; “Delirium is first and foremost a destressing condition for the suffer and their care givers, and to date we have no treatments we know to shorten or stop delirium when it develops. “This trial is an important step forward in our understanding of how people develop delirium after an operation. By demonstrating that a general anaesthetic is not a probable cause of delirium will allow researchers to further study other areas, such as the bodies inflammatory response to the surgery itself, and how this carries over into the brain.”

LINK FOUND BETWEEN GUM DISEASE AND OTHER ILLNESS SUCH AS MENTAL HEALTH AND HEART CONDITIONS, STUDY FINDS
A University of Birmingham-led study shows an increased risk of patients developing illnesses including mental ill-health and heart conditions if they have a GP-inputted medical history of periodontal (gum) disease. Experts carried out a first of its kind study of the GP records of 64,379 patients who had a GP-inputted recorded history of periodontal disease, including gingivitis and periodontitis (the condition that occurs if gum disease is left untreated and can lead to tooth loss). Of these, 60,995 had gingivitis and 3,384 had periodontitis. These patients’ records were compared to those of 251,161 patients who had no record of periodontal disease. Across the cohorts, the average age was 44 years and 43% were male, while 30% were smokers. Body Mass Index (BMI), ethnicity and deprivation levels were also similar across the groups. The researchers examined the data to establish how many of the patients with and without periodontal disease go on to develop cardiovascular disease (e.g., heart failure, stroke, vascular dementia), cardiometabolic disorders (e.g., high blood pressure, Type 2 diabetes), autoimmune conditions (e.g., arthritis, Type 1 diabetes, psoriasis), and mental ill-health (e.g., depression, anxiety and serious mental illness) over an average follow-up of around three years. From the research, published today in journal BMJ Open, the team discovered that those patients with a recorded history of periodontal disease
at the start of the study were more likely to go on and be diagnosed with one of these additional conditions over an average of three years, compared to those in the cohort without periodontal disease at the beginning of the research. The results of the study showed, in patients with a recorded history of periodontal disease at the start of the study, the increased risk of developing mental ill-health was 37%, while the risk of developing autoimmune disease was increased by 33%, and the risk of developing cardiovascular disease was raised by 18%, while the risk of having a cardiometabolic disorder was increased by 7% (with the increased risk much higher for
Type 2 diabetes at 26%). Co-first author, Dr Joht Singh Chandan, of the University of Birmingham’s Institute of Applied Health Research, said: “Poor oral health is extremely common, both here in the UK and globally. When oral ill-health progresses, it can lead to a substantially reduced quality of life. However, until now, not much has been known about the association of poor oral health and many chronic diseases, particularly mental illhealth. Therefore, we conducted one of the largest epidemiological studies of its kind to date, using UK primary care data to explore the association between periodontal disease and sev-
eral chronic conditions. We found evidence that periodontal disease appears to be associated with an increased risk of developing these associated chronic diseases. As periodontal diseases are very common, an increased risk of other chronic diseases may represent a substantial public health burden.” Co-first author, Dr Dawit Zemedikun, of the University of Birmingham’s Institute of Applied Health Research, said:“Our study was the most comprehensive study of its kind and the results provided vital confirmation of evidence which has previously either been lacking in strength or has had gaps – particularly the association between oral ill-health and mental ill-health.” Co-senior author, Professor Krish Nirantharakumar, also of the University of Birmingham’s Institute of Applied Health Research, said: “An important implication of our findings is the need for effective communication between dental and other healthcare professionals to ensure patients obtain an effective treatment plan targeting both oral and wider health to improve their existing overall health and reduce the risk of future illness.” Periodontal specialist, Dr Devan Raindi, of the University of Birmingham’s School of Dentistry, said: “This study strengthens the continually evolving research associating periodontal disease, in particular periodontitis, and various general health conditions. It reinforces the importance of prevention, early identifica-
tion and treatment of periodontitis and the need for members of the public to attend regular oral health checks with a dentist or dental care professional.” The research was partly funded by Versus Arthritis’s Centre for Musculoskeletal Ageing Research based at the University of Birmingham, and supported by the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) Birmingham Biomedical Research Centre. Caroline Aylott, Head of Research Delivery at Versus Arthritis, said: “Some of the biggest challenges of arthritis, especially auto-immune conditions like rheumatoid arthritis (RA) which affects 400,000 people in the UK, is being able to know who is more at risk of developing it, and finding ways to prevent it. Previous studies have shown that people with RA were four times more likely to have gum disease than their RA-free counterparts and it tended to be more severe. This research provides further clear evidence why healthcare professionals need to be vigilant for early signs of gum disease and how it can have wide-reaching implications for a person’s health, reinforcing the importance of taking a holistic approach when treating people.” It was carried out in collaboration with the University of Oxford, Birmingham Dental Hospital, the University of Warwick, Newcastle Upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, Newcastle University, and Sandwell and West Birmingham NHS Trust.
HEALTHY HEART TIP: CURB YOUR COUCH POTATO We all spend at least some of our time each day sitting down, whether it’s when we are working or watching the television, but research shows that too much sitting can be bad for our heart. We should ideally aim to sit down for no more than 8 hours each day, but this can be difficult, especially if we have a deskbased job. Here are some tips on how to be more active: Set a Movement Reminder If you are working at a desk, try setting an alarm once every hour to get up and move. This could be as simple as walking to get a glass of water or doing a few star-jumps on the spot! Vary Your Workspace If you have access to a standing desk, this can be a great way to re-
duce the amount of time you spend sitting down. If not, there are lots of ways that you can still change your work setup, such as by using a raised surface like a kitchen worktop, or by placing your laptop on a sturdy box. Take Active Breaks Taking a short walk on a lunch break can be a great way to take your mind off your work, enhance your energy levels and get your heart pumping. Get Creative Setting cues can help to remind us to move during the day. A fun and creative way to do this is to label each door in your house with an exercise such as squats, star jumps or jogging, and every time you walk through each door, you do the exercise labelled on that door.

Chef Gregory Doyen EXPERIENCE AND “GD SWEET CONCEPTS” By: Rida Khan (Aviation Author)
Chef Gregory Doyen ( Instagram A/c : gregorydoyen ) from the French Burgundy region is a well known pastry chef . His passion to become a pastry chef rose when he saw his mother cooking and dad making glass sculptures . He combined both their professions and used in his career as glass sculpture helps him to become more artistic. After completing his studies he started his career as a confectioner at “ Grand Vefour” in Paris and at 5 star restaurant “Le St Paul” in South of France . There he refined his knowledge in “ Dessert sur assiette”. In 2011 he became an executive pastry chef for Hediard group in Russia, designed and opened a 650m2 luxury pastry laboratory. In December 2015 he became executive pastry chef for Luxury Mandarin Oriental Hotel in Taipei, Taiwan. Not only this Gregory improved his management and pastry skills by running the pastry production with 35 employees in his team , he produced over 500 different pastries daily for gourmet restaurant, room service and catering. In 2018 he decided to move forward in life so he made his own consulting and an educational project known as “GD Sweet Concepts”. From here he became internationally famous and worked in different countries like London, India, China etc. He made high profile clients like : Cartier , Louis Vuitton, Hermes, Gucci, Chanel, Prada, Jaguar, BMW, Mercedes Benz, Mont Blanc, Dior Parfum, Land Rover, Philips etc.
Q
Why did you choose the profession of becoming a pastry chef ? It was an evidence for me, I was born into an artistic family and my mother loves to cook. The only job that can match both the professions is being a “PASTRY ” Chef.
Q
From your life experience , one part was that you made 500 different pastries daily with your team. Was it a difficult task ? If yes then how did you manage it ? It was not a difficult task , in this job you have to always “Keep the quality” and “Organizing the things” is the key to success. When I start making desserts everything is super organized.
Q
How you feel making desserts for your high profile clients like Louis Vuitton, Cartier , Mercedes Benz etc. Do you make something special for them ? I feel really good and yes something special is always there because you can’t propose the same stuff for other clients, you have to always create something new for them.
Q
You are from the French Burgundy region which is famous for producing wine. Tell me something about burgundy desserts ? Yes it’s true Burgundy region is famously known for wine but it’s also special for other things like berries especially blackcurrant, pear and some spicy bread (pain D’Epices and nonette) . There are a lot of traditional Burgundy desserts and they are not really fancy like I do, but definitely they are tasty which is most important.
Q
Your desserts have a magic of lots of colors with the creativity of flowers including fresh fruits in it. Is it because you are from France or is there some other reason ? Chef Gregory : It’s not because I am French, actually I love fruits. In fruits you will get the original sweetness and for me they are a precious ingredient. And by adding a pinch of chocolate the desserts become incredible. I travel around the world and fruits are always an amazing ingredient.
Q
How did your father’s handcrafted glass sculptures help you to choose your career as a pastry chef ? The art of glass is very much similar to Artistic Pastry and I always get amazed by the Artistic Pastry.
Q
Please tell us about your brand GD Sweet Concept? GD Sweet concept is a consulting brand who assist in different areas : - Developing new ideas, concept for horeca - Pastry shop , hotel / restaurant developing menu - Designing production - Management and teaching
Q
I
Being a pastry chef you are a good dessert teacher also. What do you have to say about it ? love to share my experience, knowledge and teaching, my art is very important. I mostly teach the passionate and curious people who want a career in this field.
serts My
Q
What is that one thing which makes your desunique ? desserts are not sweet and there is always a special touch or reflections in it that is why they are so unique.
Q
Any advice for the upcoming chefs who want to make their career as a pastry chef ? You have to be passionate and motivated to make your career as a Pastry Chef. Being a pastry chef like me , you have to count a minimum of 12 years , don’t count your hours and money at the beginning .

The UK’s most vibrant Halal burger chain has seen over 100 enquires for stores. Launching in Birmingham in 2016 Mak Halal began its expansion earlier this year with plans to have 10 stores by spring 2022. However the increase demand for Halal meat in the UK has seen more enquiries for locations. In 2020 the spending in the UK Halal food and drink sector was estimated at £4.64 billion or 8% of the total UK food and drink spending. The money is spent in Halal is expected increase as the UK’s Muslim community grows. According to the Pew Research centre there are over 4 million Muslims in the UK or 5% of the population. They estimate that the number of Muslims in the UK will triple by 2050. However with every new store opening Mak Halal is introducing non Muslims to the taste of Halal and are doing their best to meet the growing demand. The study by cybersecurity and privacy experts VPN Overview analysed ONS data across more than 400 areas of the UK to discover the country’s social media capital. The research looked at the internet usage among different age groups compared to the demographic make-up of each unitary authority, district and borough in the UK. Islington ranked top of the list with residents spending an average of one hour 45 minutes on social media each day. This is driven by the fact that the borough has one of the highest proportions of women under 35 in any area of the UK. Women aged 16 to 24 spend the longest amount of time on social media each day, estimated at an average of 192 minutes – three hours and 37 minutes – while women between 25 and 34 years old spend around two hours and 42 minutes on social each day. In Islington, 16% of women are between 16 and 24 – considerably higher than the UK average of 10%, while 27% are between 25 and 34, which is more than double the national average of 13%. As a result, the North London borough, which has a population of 248,115, is estimated to spend a combined total of 434,136 hours on social sites and apps each day.`
SEARCHES FOR ‘SELL BLACKBERRY’ EXPLODE 1,528% AS COMPANY ANNOUNCES THE DEVICE WILL STOP WORKING eted to 16 times the average volume in one day as owners of old BlackBerry phones seek to sell their devices. A spokesperson from VpnOverview. com commented on the findings: “BlackBerry was the go-to smartphone brand in the early 2010s with the brand’s phones being easily recognised because of their qwerty keyboards. In more recent years, BlackBerry has fallen behind companies like Apple and Samsung in the smartphone market. Customers could be looking to sell not only because they are unable to use the device but also to profit from the vintage aspect the phone will now adopt. This is a big move by BlackBerry as they look to strengthen their position in the cyber-security software market.” Google searches for “BlackBerry phones” also increased 590% on the same day.
Analysis of Google search data reveals that online searches for “Sell BlackBerry” exploded 1,528% on 4th January, the same day BlackBerry announced they would be stopping the support for their operating system used on their phones. Analysis by internet experts VpnOverview.com reveals that online interest for selling old BlackBerry phones skyrock-

This fine appreciation of Bentley’s products was offered to the company’s people as well in what was another challenging year for organisations. In a time of great uncertainty, Bentley’s fast-acting reaction to the COVID-19 pandemic set a gold standard for crisis response that has helped the company navigate one of the greatest challenges in a generation. Efforts to combat COVID-19 were far greater than the introduction of masks, and were rooted in developing a new way of ‘working that allowed it to respond quickly to an ever-changing, frequently uncertain situation’, said Autocar. Remarking on the company’s success, Bentley’s Crisis Management Team was awarded the ‘Innovation Award’ by the UK automotive magazine. Further reward of Bentley’s approach to its people was the celebration of a decade as a Top Employer in 2021 by the internationally-acclaimed Top Employers Institute. New analysis has found that Yeovil, Somerset, is the easiest place to pass your driving test, in the UK. The study by A-Plan Insurance examined the pass rate percentage of major driving test centres in the UK – those that have conducted at least 1,000 tests since April 2020 – to determine the one with the highest pass rate. Yeovil, Somerset came out on top with the highest percentage of pass rates out of all test centres in the UK. This test centre has an average pass rate of 67%, when analysing the passes of all tests from April 2020 to June 2021 – of 1,578 tests taken, 1,051 were passed. Placing second is Dorchester in Dorset, which comes in just below Yeovil with a pass rate of 66%. Dorchester’s test centre has assessed 1,559 prospective drivers since April 2020,
deeming 1,024 of them ready to drive. Aberdeen South (Cover) is the third easiest test centre for someone to pass their driving test in the UK with a pass rate of 65.8%. The Goodmayes (London) test centre in the borough of Redbridge has been the UK’s busiest over the past 18 months, completing 6,668 tests, and handing out just 2,533 licences – a pass rate of just 39.9%. However, it is another test centre in the capital that has the lowest pass rate of centres that have conducted at least 1,000 tests since April 2020. Only 29.4% of learners have passed their tests in Erith, which is in the London borough of Bexley. Belvedere in London is the second most difficult place to pass a test, with a success rate of 31.9%, while Birmingham (South Yardley) has the third-
lowest percentage of people passing – 36.4%. Ipswich just meets the top 10 with a pass rate of 61.9% whilst Poole narrowly misses the top 10 by less than 1%. Reading places 46th out of all of the test centres in the UK whilst Oxford comes 116th. The London centre with the highest pass rate is Sidcup, which places at number 52 on the list, with 55.5% of tests passed. In total between April 2020 and June 2021, there were 727,361 tests taken. Commenting on the figures, a spokesperson for A-Plan Insurance said: “Taking a driving test is a landmark moment in anyone’s life, and can often feel very daunting. It’s fascinating to see the considerable difference in success rates between major test centres.”

EV CONSUMERS STILL NEED EDUCATION AS 42% DON’T UNDERSTAND FULL BENEFITS OF BUYING AN ELECTRIC CAR
Ioanna Stagia, VP International Insights, Teads, comments: “Our research shows a significant consumer shift towards more eco-conscious attitudes when it comes to car buying. What is also clear is that online channels are becoming increasingly important in driving the consumer journey, from awareness through to purchase. In order to maximise success, from the difficult times automakers have had, they must plan their 2022 campaigns accordingly to leverage these two key insights.”
London & New York, 12th Jan 2022: Teads, The Global Media Platform, today released the results of its comprehensive automotive research in partnership with Kantar. The global study unveiled that only a few brands are already strongly associated with electric vehicles (EVs) and that there is still education needed as 42% of all respondents aren’t aware of the full benefits of an EV car. Connecting with the consumer and educating them further on EVs is key for brands to stay relevant and to build for the EV future. A supplementary survey on the Teads platform amongst auto-intenders, specifically about impact of chip shortage on consumer purchase, showed that supply issues are seriously affecting purchase decisions. 89% of consumers looking to buy a car in the next two years, as well as those looking to buy a car in the next 6 months, are aware of the existence of a chip shortage. 31% say the chip shortage will affect their plans to buy a car, specifically 14% of immediate auto intenders globally will consider used cars, 9% will choose from available brands and 8% will delay their car buy, that number being 5%
►►Global study ran across 8 countries and 1,900 automotive consumers, to unveil consumer trends driving EV purchases
►►52% of first time EV buyers said a brand’s website had increased in importance during the pandemic for researching their purchasing decision.
►►Environmental consciousness is the top driver to purchase an electric vehicle in EMEA, whereas North American consumers are primarily motivated by fuel savings.
►►Additional survey showed that an incredible 89% of automotive intenders are aware of chip shortages and their impact on purchase
among Europeans. Customers also expect price reductions for longer waiting time, with 31% of global customers expecting such price reductions if they hold off on their new car purchase, increasing to 34% among European auto intenders. When it comes to advertising for automotive brands, historically TV has been the dominant media choice. However, Teads’ latest research shows that consumers are increasingly relying on digital across their purchase journey and this is even more true for EV intenders. Half of EV consumers would consider going through the entire purchasing process online (vs 35% for fuel intenders), and 74% of them will continue this trend post-covid. Given the importance of digital within the consumer journey it’s interesting to note
that, when looking at online channels that influence the consumer EV journey online, news sites were 1.6x more influential than social media, and consumers wanted to see video ads that were short, relevant, and skippable. Digital ads are very powerful at driving action in the automotive market, as 90% of consumers interested in purchasing an Electric Vehicle, and 85% of overall car buyers, took action as a result of online advertising. The research from Teads found that visiting an automotive brands website was the most likely action (40%) a consumer took after seeing an online auto ad with a further 21% stating they would click on the ad. A brand’s website is also a key touchpoint in the purchase journey as 49 % of EV
intenders in EMEA start their research by visiting the brand’s website, compared to only 28% that visit a dealer. Brand websites are also the most influential sources of purchase decisions with 80% of EV intenders saying that the website has an impact on their final decision. Auto intenders can be reached in a variety of contexts, with news and tech being the two most popular types of content before automotive. Furthermore, technological advances should feature highly in EV campaigns as those interested in EV’s value the latest technology (76%) more compared to those looking for standard fuel cars (56%). Henner Bloemer, Global Senior Industry Director Teads, comments: “It is important to further build out the brand’s EV
profile as brand reputation is key for EV intenders. Established brands have to stay attractive for highly profitable customers in order to grow in an evolving market with new competitor entries, as 57% of EV intenders are willing to pay more for an EV car.”

Aston Community Games launch this weekend to unite communities through sport The first-ever Aston Community Games will be launched this month by the Lord Mayor of Birmingham. To mark a year until the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games and to bring communities back together following pandemic isolation over the last 18 months, Brummies are being invited to an outdoor sports-fest in the sunshine. Being held at Aston Park outside Aston Hall, the free public event will host a range of sports and community activities including tennis, football, badminton, cycling lessons, circuit training and Zumba aerobics. There will also be gardening activities, arts & crafts, storytelling, Bhangra dancers, Tai Chi, scouts, face-painting and health & wellbeing initiatives. Residents are encouraged to bring picnics, while an on-site cafe at Aston Hall will also be selling food and drink. Co-organised by local groups Aston Villa Foundation, Saathi House, Birmingham Settlement and Aston Hall, the brand new neighbourhood Community Games will be opened by Lord Mayor Muhammad Afzal and also attented by Aston councillor Nagina Kauser. The Aston Community Games are set to become an annual event with the inaugural fun day created to encourage local pride and bring residents together to work towards better health. Other north-east Birmingham organisations showcasing exciting activities on the day will be Legacy WM, Com-
munities Engage and Thrive CIC, Witton Lodge, Inspire Activity, Aston Old Edwardians and Aston Parish Church. Jen Tullett, Neighbourhood Engagement Officer at Aston Villa Foundation, said: “The Aston Villa Foundation is the community arm of the football club. We have the traditional football which the club takes control of and but we run all the community activities, all local charity partners, things like that. We work with local communities as much as we can. “The Aston Community Games is the first time we’ve run anything like this. After the last 18 months, obviously we haven’t been doing much community

stuff, particularly on a large scale, so we thought a Community Games would be a really good way to start bringing people out of lockdown and also letting local people know what services are available to them. “A lot of the time there’s so much going on locally but they don’t realise it’s available to them. So then we can look at stuff like Zumba, archery, football, it’s all on their doorstep so this Community Games will be a good chance for them to see it all. It’s going to be a real buzz and we hope it’s going to be the start of something that every year we will traditionally have the Aston Community Games. So you don’t want to be the person left out
so come down, have an ice-cream if the weather’s good and see what’s going on!” Mashkura Begum, Chair at women’s empowerment organisation Saathi House, said: “Saathi House is one of the primary partners of the Aston Community Games. It’s basically a day where all the local community organisations come together and celebrate what is best about Aston. “We all know we’ve had a really tough year, a challenging year, so it’s about actually getting everybody out in an open space, Aston park where Aston hall is based. We’ve got Aston Hall Football Club involved, Birmingham
Settlement, Community Games and of course Saathi House. “We’ve got over 20 activities happening on the day so it’s a day for family, women, men and young people to come together and enjoy a bit of outdoor activities. We’ve also got the Commonwealth Games happening in this city in a year’s time so it’s also building up that momentum and getting people active in a safe space. Hopefully the weather will be nice!” Michael Olajide, Youth Worker with Birmingham Settlement, added: “Aston Community Games is an opportunity for people to come out. If you think about what’s been happening for the last 12 months in society with Covid, it’s something that people can look forward to, gets people out of their house, gets them back to social interaction and we know there’s a massive benefit to that. “It’s really an opportunity for people to come together, meet one another, interact with football, games, 5-a-side, cricket, so it’s a fun day really.” Dennis Kennedy, founder of Community Games across the city, said: “Community Games are all about introducing local people with local organisations, more often than not sporting clubs and organisations. The Games that we’re holding in Aston in August have a slightly broader reach so local sporting clubs and local interest groups, people from the local church, the local gardening association as well; so we should have quite a varied and interesting mix of groups and organisations for people to come along and connect with who are all from their local community. “We’ve got things like Zumba, football, tennis, badminton, catchball, there’ll be some face painting, there’s be some chair based activities, there’s also going to be some nordic walking, we’re going to have a gardening association, skites, gouds, there’s about 25 different activities and organisations that people can come and enjoy, meet and talk to and just have a good time! “It’s fresh air and fun with your family. Come out and have a lovely day in the gardens of Aston Hall, meet some local people, have some activities, smile, laugh, bring a picnic if you want, sit on the grass and just have a nice afternoon out with your family and friends, something people haven’t been able to do in a while now.” Aston Community Games take place on Sunday 8th August 2021, between 11am - 4pm at Aston Hall in Birmingham. All welcome.
