PETER & PAUL CATHOLIC PRIMARY ACADEMY CLASSMATES TAUGHT CRUCIAL LIFE LESSONS THROUGH FIRST AID WORKSHOP

Savlon – the UK’s #1 Antiseptic Cream* – has partnered with Mini First Aid to host lifesaving first aid workshops for children, with Peter & Paul Catholic Primary Academy in Wolverhampton selected to receive a free workshop as part of the programme. The workshop taught the children key life skills ranging from what happens to their bodies if they were hurt and how they would be treated by a grown up, to understanding basic first aid knowledge required for a first aid emergency. The classmates at Peter & Paul Catholic Primary Academy enjoyed their First Aid workshop on 9th June 2022, courtesy of Mini First Aid and partner, Savlon®. Mini First Aid is the UK’s largest specialist Paediatric First Aid training company, having appeared on Dragons’ Den and securing investment from Sara Davies MBE, the initiative successfully provides early years with award-winning first aid workshops and training. The classes are certified by The First Aid Industry Body, Association of First Aiders & Federation of First Aid Training Organisations, whilst also meeting the 2020 National Curriculum requirements. Mrs J Byrne, Headteacher at Peter & Paul Catholic Primary Academy said: “We are thrilled to have been offered this opportunity. The session was so carefully thought out, insightful and informative and it was great for the children to engage in an experience like this outside of their usual classroom activities.” “It was lovely to see the children’s confidence and skills building throughout the

session and it has left them with a great sense of independence and reassurance that they know how to act in a first aid emergency.” The children were shown how to deal with bumps, burns, breaks, bleeding, how to carry out CPR and, how to deal with choking. The Mini First Aid course content has been carefully crafted in partnership with educational psycholo-

gists, teachers and first aid industry bodies, and all its trainers are experienced in working with children as young as three years old. At the end of the workshops the children were awarded a certificate and booklet to take home. Founded in 2014 by mum of six Kate Ball, Mini First Aid was a response to a lack of early years focused and childfriendly first aid courses available to

adults and children. The workshops are hugely beneficial to the children, whilst also providing reassurance to parents and teachers that their children are equipped with the correct tools and techniques needed to remain as safe as possible. Brittany Skeels, Savlon Brand Manager, added: “As Savlon is considered a first aid kit essential, our partnership with Mini First Aid goes hand in hand.

We are proud to have been able to play a part in providing the local children of Peter & Paul Catholic Primary Academy with these fantastic classes and it’s great to hear the children and teachers shared such a positive experience with the Little First Aider Academy.”

MIDLANDS AIR AMBULANCE CHARITY LAUNCHES VOLUNTEER RECRUITMENT DRIVE

A lifesaving charity that provides prehospital care to critically ill and injured patients is making a plea to local people to volunteer time to help keep its charity shops open. A recent report by the Retail Trust, which surveyed over 1,500 retail staff, found that one in five (21 per cent) British retail workers are planning to quit the sector. Without volunteers, Midlands Air Ambulance Charity may not be able to keep its charity shops open or attend as many fundraising events this summer. So the charity is calling on local communities to donate their time to support its rapid response emergency service. With a host of fundraising events back in the calendar and its high street shops now fully open, Midlands Air Ambulance Charity is recruiting for a range of volunteers that can help keep funds coming in to raise the £10million it needs to remain operational each year. Alison Hill, volunteer manager for Midlands Air Ambulance Charity, said: “Our volunteers play a crucial role in keeping

our charity running – some work behind the scenes in administrative roles at our busy HQ in Stourbridge, while others are front and centre at our fundraising events. A dedicated few also support our retail operations across our six charity shops, meaning they can stay open and carry on bringing in funds to make missions possible. “We’re proud to have a 200-strong family of volunteers who donate their time regularly or on a more micro-volunteer basis, but there’s always room for more to join the family. “What unites all of our existing volunteers is their commitment to raise as much money as possible so our rapid response emergency service can continue to operate. We’re eager to recruit a new cohort of volunteers who are as equally dedicated and passionate in raising funds. In return they’ll become part of a muchloved team and they’ll get a real sense of achievement knowing they’re making a tangible difference in their community.” Midlands Air Ambulance Charity is cur-

their efforts as a positive contribution to society. Through a rigorous nomination process, these nominators had to demonstrate the nominee’s impact in five key areas: Vision, Social Impact, Inspiring Others, Youth Leadership, and Service Journey. There are 20 Diana Award Judging Panels representing each region or nation both in the UK and internationally. Panels consist of three judges who understand the value of young people, including one young person representative. The panels have an important main purpose: to determine which nominations from each region or nation will receive a Diana Award. Nominations are judged using the Criteria Guide and Scoring Guide which have been created to measure quality of youth social action.

Tessy Ojo CBE, CEO of The Diana Award, says:

We warmly congratulate our new Diana Award recipients from the UK and across the world who are changemakers for their generation. It is especially poignant as we remember Princess Diana twenty five years on. We know by receiving this honour they will inspire more young people to get involved in their communities and begin their own journey as active citizens.

MAJOR NEW INITIATIVE TACKLING SEXUAL VIOLENCE IN MUSIC VENUES AND CLUBS LAUNCHED A new UK-wide initiative working with music venues, clubs and industry to tackle sexual violence through a framework of support, guidance and technology officially launched today. Safer Dance, created by Birmingham City University graduate Sam Hennerley and business partner Jack Young, has launched after pilots with three major nightclubs in Birmingham, Liverpool and London. Launched in partnership with risk assurance consultants RSM UK, the Safer Dance initiative is an holistic suite of tools that provide support, guidance and technology for venues to help reduce sexual harassment risks and ensure a safer environment for music fans and staff. The new service was first outlined in Sam’s final year Music Industries university project. Safer Dance founder Sam Hennerley said: “Jack and I have been involved in the night-time economy over the past five years and through conversations with the public and our own contemporary research, we became aware of the issues that are common in certain environments, such as at live gigs and club nights.” “To propel change in attitudes towards sexual misconduct, accessibility to information, guidance and support has always been at the forefront of our thinking. We see the self-assessment tool as the first step for venues to start taking further action to improve fan and staff safety.” Since graduating from Birmingham City University, Sam has worked with music marketing consultant Jack to develop the initiative over the past 12 months, realising a shared ambition to change attitudes towards sexual harassment and misconduct in music spaces. The duo now plan to work closely with local authorities targeting geographical areas to improve overall nightlife safety, starting locally in the Midlands but expanding across the UK.

The rollout of Safer Dance – with a free online self-assessment tool available – follows a pledge from 100 UK music festivals to address sexual violence and the rise in incidents of alleged ‘drink spiking’ at nightspots across the country, and the emergence of a new foundation to help survivors of sexual abuse in the music industry. Paul Callum, associate director of risk assurance, RSM UK, said: “Managing sexual harassment can be challenging for venues, so having a risk management framework provides them, their staff and their customers with the confidence that they take safety seriously.

“As clubs and venues have emerged from the pandemic, they have faced a whole new world of uncertainty and nervousness among customers, regulators, investors, social agitators and government. Businesses are therefore seeking to formalise and strengthen the management of key risks, and Safer Dance helps progressive business leaders in the night-time economy do that.” Current Birmingham City University Music Industry students fed into research undertaken by Sam and Jack, and the team are exploring ways to embed Safer Dance into the University’s Students’ Union.

The initiative has also received a boost through support from Birmingham native and techno DJ, producer and record label manager DJ Rebekah, who in 2020 created a campaign called #ForTheMusic, named for the women and LGBTQ+ members of the electronic music scene who want to enjoy gigs without being harassed or fearing for their safety. Safer Dance co-founder Jack Young said “After living in Ibiza and travelling to festivals and events around the world I witnessed a dark side of the music industry relating to cases of sexual violence, security incompetence, black-

mail and drug abuse. In coming back to the UK and starting my business I knew I wanted to offer support where possible to help eradicate these issues. By ensuring venues have the correct mechanisms in place to best manage risk, music fan and clubber spaces can be safer and more enjoyable. “We are delighted to be at a stage where we can support venues around key business risks with our mission to improve nightlife safety, for everyone. Our collaborations with RSM UK, organisations likes RSVP and movements such as MeToo have helped to make this possible.”

PLANNING EXCELLENCE CELEBRATED AT RTPI CEREMONY A brand-new music Ensemble for young people from migrant communities living in Birmingham has been chosen to perform in the 20th edition of Celebrating Sanctuary’s Birmingham Refugee Week Festival on Saturday 25th June. Just three months after the Ensemble’s launch. The GLOBAL MUSIC YOUTH ENSEMBLE has been created by internationally renowned musician Sarvar Sabri, Co-Founder of the multi award-winning Sonia Sabri Company, who bring together participants aged 12-25 at Birmingham’s Midlands Arts Centre each week. Rehearsals provide over ten participants with a chance to share their cultures, experiences and skills with others who have travelled across the globe from countries such as Yemen, Congo, Zimbabwe, Haiti, India, and Pakistan to settle in the city. Collaborating with established professional artists and musicians from Sonia Sabri Company and Celebrating Sanctuary Birmingham, the Ensemble enables young people with talent and potential to progress as musicians or producers, developing their music and personal skills. The professional artists, some of whom come from migrant communities themselves and are inspirational role models, include Germa Adan known for her unique use of the fiddle and guitar. Her recent writing is influenced by Haitian, American, British, and global folk, as well as jazz harmonies, classical and contemporary composition techniques. Germa Adan was born in Les Cayes, Haiti, and spent a big part of her life in the US before settling in Birmingham. Her diverse ancestry of creolisation and unique journey across borders led to an organic sound within her music that

captures the many influences that have shaped her as a person as well as a music creator. Other professional artists include Katie Stevens a Royal Birmingham Conservatoire alumni. Her evergrowing fascination with woodwind instruments and the techniques integral to them allow her to travel and learn through lessons and workshops with great masters around the world. Katie plays regularly with Birmingham’s eclectic folk/ world band ‘Bonfire Radicals,’ the powerhouse that is megafolk band ‘The Destroyers’ and features as a freelance musician in many other groups that tour the UK festival and rural touring networks. Ensemble Founder Sarvar Sabri is an internationally renowned tabla player and composer whose versatility and passion for rich diversity of the world’s musical traditions has spurred him to experiment constantly with other world-class musicians, composers, and dancers. As well as Indian classical music, Sarvar is involved with experimental work. His works ranges from BCMG in collaboration with composer Judith Weir, (CBSO ), Bournemouth Sinfonietta, East of England Orchestra and Sinfonia Baltica. He has worked with City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, LSO (London) and Viva Sinfonia (Derby). Under Sarvar’s guidance and musical leadership the Ensemble, which has enabled the musicians to develop their own GLOBAL MUSIC YOUTH ENSEMBLE sound, will be performing two world premieres at Midlands Arts Centre featuring choral vocals, guitar, tabla and spoken word. The performance will feature ‘Your Love’ which tells the story of making a foreign country a place of their own, living in harmo-

ny, peace and love, and ‘Crossing’ about a journey into the unknown. The Ensemble aims to tour across the country providing a unique opportunity to play a multitude of music styles and genres for a range of diverse audiences in a variety of venues, festivals, and spaces. Sarvar who launched the Ensemble as part of Sonia Sabri Company’s 20th anniversary this year said “To be asked to perform as part of the Festival during Refugee Week after only 3 months of being together is a testament to the talent of these incredible musicians. No matter where we are born, music is one thing that we all share quite naturally. I am so proud that through this project, we can encourage these young people, who wouldn’t normally have the opportunity, to continue to develop their musical skills.” The Global Music Youth Ensemble is in partnership with Celebrating Sanctuary Birmingham (CSB) a diverse music and arts organisation with a mission to support, promote and develop artists from refugee and migrant backgrounds. Rachael Cox, Programme Manager, Celebrating Sanctuary Birmingham added: In our 20th year we are excited to be working in partnership with Sonia Sabri Company and the Global Music Youth Ensemble. This was an idea we first started discussing back in 2019, so it’s been great to see it develop. It’s a fantastic opportunity for artists from diverse backgrounds to collaborate and work in new ways, and for young people to have a diverse and open platform to share musical ideas whilst developing skills. We look forward to welcoming the ensemble to our Refugee Week Festival event at Midlands Arts Centre on 25th June.”

THOUSANDS OF CHILDREN AND YOUNG PEOPLE VISIT BIRMINGHAM CITY UNIVERSITY’S INSPIRED FAMILY DAY Thousands of young curious minds flocked to Birmingham City University to take part in its Inspired Family Day providing a plethora of fun and creative activities including a book reading and signing by its Chancellor Sir Lenny Henry. The event, at the University’s Parkside and Curzon buildings, took place on Saturday (11 June) and marked the launch of Inspired Festival – a two-week programme of events that showcase the work of art and design graduates. Inspired Family Day saw youngsters and their families get involved in a host of exciting workshops and demonstrations including percussion sessions with Royal Birmingham Conservatoire musicians, medal making with a School of Jewellery expert, family portraits in the biggest green screen studio outside London, and designing gaming characters with School of Games, Film and Animation specialists. University chancellor Sir Lenny Henry signed copies of his children’s book ‘The Boy With Wings’ whilst staff from the University’s Faculty of Health Education and Life Sciences were also on hand to demonstrate medical equipment, including laparoscopy kits and electromyograms. Exhibitions featuring work by final year art and design students – including exhibitions in photography, fashion, jewellery, product design, architecture, art, English and music – as part of the BCU Inspired Festival, officially went on show across Parkside. Sara Harris, Interim Deputy Dean for the Faculty of Arts, Design and Media, said: “It’s been wonderful to welcome so many families here on campus after a two-year Covid hiatus. Our Inspired Family Day is the perfect way to share incredible work by the next generation of

home-grown talent in the West Midlands with the wider world.” The University’s partner organisations, including Craftspace and HS2, were also on hand to offer sessions making gifts for athletes visiting the city later this year, and many visitors enjoyed trying out a construction simulator and designing high-speed rail routes. The University’s chosen charities, Acorns Children’s Hospice and Birmingham and Solihull Women’s Aid (BWSA), were also on site during Inspired Family Day, speaking with visitors about their work. Anna Fawcett, Income Generation and Corporate Relationships Manager for BWSA, said: “This was our first large community event since before the pandemic. We chatted with families about inspiring women, encouraging children at our stall to make posters and friendship bracelets, and we talked about our work supporting women and children in our area. “Hopefully our presence at the event helped to remind anyone in an abusive relationship, or people concerned about someone in their life that we are here for them, and they need not be alone – our helpline is open 7 days a week and there is support out there.” Inspired Family Day was also part of an extensive and exciting events programme running up until November this year which aims to celebrate the work of the University and its ambitions set out within its 2025 Strategy. To find out more about the BCU 2025 Strategy, please visit www.bcu.ac.uk/2025. Inspired Family Day also coincided with Birmingham Design Festival, which included workshops and talks across the University’s Parkside Building. Visitors were encouraged to make sustainable choices to travel to the city.

WINNING DESIGNS FOR PROUD HOST CITY PRESENTATION ITEMS REVEALED brothers Henry and James Deakin. Their coin has an intricate design, with one side showcasing a number of city landmarks including the Hall of Memory, the Sentinel ‘Spitfire Island’ artwork at Castle Vale, the Rotunda and Library of Birmingham – with the other side displaying the city’s crest and motto ‘Forward’. Renowned merchandising company Touch of Ginger won the second competition tender and appointed A.E. Williams, a renowned pewter item manufacturer, to manufacture the Proud Host City bull on their behalf. Established in 1779 by Thomas Williams from his home on the Welsh border, making flatware and dishes, the business set up a base in Birmingham in 1840 to take advantage of the demand for pewter items, and by the early 20th Century was producing tea sets for the Ritz hotel in London. In more recent times, the firm has produced props for films, television shows and major stage productions – and in 2010, a recreation of the Henry VIII Wine Fountain at Hampton Court Palace was unveiled. A.E. Williams are the only company, besides the Royal Mint, to make coinage for the Crown in over 500 years. Visitors use the coins to pay for a goblet of wine from the fountain. Sat on a round base, the bull, complete with a ring through its nose, will be presented in a cylindrical presentation box to those in the privileged position of receiving one.

Cllr Ian Ward, Leader of Birmingham City Council, said:

The creation of presentation items for visiting dignitaries is yet another way the Commonwealth Games are about more than just the 11 days of sport taking place this summer. It has enabled this opportunity for us to support Birmingham’s businesses as we emerge from the COVID-19 pandemic – and show to the world what a creative and skilled place we are. The designs are bold and capture the essence of what our great city is all about. I’m sure these items will be well-received by everyone who is fortunate to get a coin or a bull, and they will help strengthen friendships and relationships with influential representatives of other nations and organisations in the years to come as we seek to solidify the legacy of being the Proud Host City of the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games.

Two manufacturing businesses from the city are benefitting from an opportunity to support the council’s role in welcoming VIPs and dignitaries during the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games. Last year, designers, manufacturers and tradespeople were invited to enter a competition via a procurement process to supply the council with bespoke presentation items, which are traditionally offered by the Proud Host City to people such as Heads of State, dignitaries, representatives from sporting federations and businesses. After judging a wide range of submissions, a panel featuring Council Leader Cllr Ian Ward, Chief Executive Deborah Cadman and then-Lord Mayor Muhammad Afzal, selected the two concepts they felt best reflected the city of Birmingham – a council investment of £57,000 into local business in the process. One was a Proud Host City coin, designed and manufactured by Deakin & Francis based in the Jewellery Quarter. The other was a Proud Host City bull statue, made by Digbeth-based A.E. Williams. Deakin & Francis, founded in 1786 by Benjamin Woolfield, have over 230 years of heritage. As England’s oldest manufacturing jewellers, the Deakin & Francis factory remains in the same building today as it began in, dating back to the Industrial Revolution. Seven generations later, the business is now managed by

DITCH IT FOR DHUL HIJJAH: MUSLIM SCHOOL CHILDREN GIVE UP TREATS DURING HOLY MONTH TO COMBAT FOOD POVERTY School children are set to take part in a fundraiser this July created by food poverty charity, Charity Right, named Ditch It for Dhul Hijjah. Children in schools across Bradford, London and Blackburn will be giving up one of their everyday treats, from consoles and time on tablets to chocolates and sweets to raise money for starving school children in some of the hungriest countries in the world. Children within Olive Tree School, Al Barakha, Al Nakhon, Raising Explorer’s and Abu Hanifa School will be fundraising throughout the month of Dhul Hijjah, which falls in July, and is the month in which pilgrims make their way to Makkah in Saudi Arabia. Each child has been given a target to raise £150 which will provide a years’ worth of school meals to a child living in severe poverty in countries such as Sudan and Bangladesh. The beneficiaries have no access to regular food and are encouraged to work over attending education in order to provide for themselves and their family. The school meals not only provide consistent nutrients, but also act as an incentive to send children to school and bring them out of the poverty cycle, in turn,

giving them the opportunity of a brighter and more prosperous future. Muslims are encouraged to donate during Dhul Hijjah as during the holy month charitable deeds reap a wealth of benefits, specifically during the first 10 days of the month, which are understood to be even more sacred than the final nights of Ramadan, making it a great period for the school children to fundraise. The fundraiser comes as over 800 million people currently go without food, experiencing some level of hunger and this statistic is on the rise, according to Action Against Hunger. Sajad Mahmood, CEO of Charity Right, says “When children experience acute levels of hunger at such an early age, they will be affected by long term health issues, such as stunting, and cognitive restrictions.” He states that 14 million children under the age of 5 experience severe acute malnutrition worldwide. Both the charity and the schools taking part believe that it is extremely important to educate these school children on. “It’s inspiring to see children from these schools taking the initiative to fundraise for those less fortunate than themselves”, adds Mahmood.

As the UK embraces the joy of the al fresco lifestyle this summer, Aperol – the iconic Italian Aperitivo – is reimagining a stunning Italian square in the heart of Birmingham with Piazza Aperol, a modern twist on the perfect location for an impromptu Aperol Spritz with friends. Piazza Aperol features affectionate nods to the romance of a traditional Italian square as the centre of town life for meeting, socialising, gossip and, of course, Aperitivo. HUMAN APPEAL AND FARESHARE JOIN FORCES TO ALLEVIATE HUNGER IN THE UK

Humanitarian NGO Human Appeal has partnered with FareShare, the UK’s biggest charity fighting hunger and food waste, to help families struggling with the cost of living crisis in the UK. The food distribution collaboration will cover the UK’s West Midlands and coincides with the Eid Qurbani, one of the most importants celebration in the Muslim calendar. In 2021, Human Appeal supported 512,000 people across the globe, up from 111,000 compared to 2020. This year they are hoping to exceed last year’s numbers through the additional partnership with FareShare, which will see just over 1,000 kilos of British mutton provided by Human Appeal reach families in the UK via Fareshare’s regional warehouses. Food inflation in the UK is now at its highest rate since 2008, and research released by The Food Foundation recently revealed that 7.3 million adults in the UK are currently experiencing food insecurity or skipping meals, including 2.6 million children. Michael Shields, Commercial Manager at FareShare, comments: “The current food crisis in the UK is of alarming concern. We’re grateful to the ongoing support from charity partners like Human Appeal, whose mutton donation will provide welcome nutritious meals to many families our network supports across the UK.” Abid Shah, UK Programmes Manager for Human Appeal, adds: “We’re hoping to reach as many families experiencing food insecurity as possible. Partnering with FareShare has been invaluable in distributing food covered by donations, and we’re happy to be supporting their efforts to provide enough food to create 1 million meals a week in the UK.”

GLOBAL ‘AN OPEN WOUND’ – STUDY REVEALS SCARS ON EU MIGRANTS IN POST-BREXIT BRITAIN

www.asianworldnews.co.uk

A new picture of EU migrants living in post-Brexit Britain reveals the enduring scars that leaving the EU has left on its citizens living in the UK. In a study carried out by experts at the University of Birmingham and Lancaster University, two thirds of participants say Brexit has significantly and, for most, negatively affected their feelings about Britain. Brexit has prompted many to question who they are and reconsider their future in the UK.

It also prompted a loss of trust towards British institutions and politicians. Report main author Professor Nando Sigona, from the University of Birmingham, comments: “While the public narrative suggests that Brexit is done and dusted, for EU citizens Brexit is still an open scar. Strong feelings of insecurity, unsettlement and sadness coexist with feelings of home and opportunity, with the latter prevailing in England, while more positive feelings are

expressed by those living in Scotland and Wales. Rebuilding trust is challenging when the ramifications of Brexit still have such profound consequences of the lives of EU citizens in Britain.” The ‘Migration and Citizenship after Brexit’ survey was completed this year by 364 EU/EEA citizens who currently live or have recently lived in the UK. The survey finds that Brexit has had a profound and lasting impact on the lives and sense of identity and belonging of EU citizens living in the UK. A 64-year-old French-born naturalised British female respondent captures a widespread feeling among participants: “I will forever remember that Thursday in 2016 when I woke up and saw the result. I cried. I had to go to work. I felt betrayed, unheard, uncared for, left to wonder about my life in the UK and what had been the point.” Respondents express a strong sense of attachment to the EU, which for many was triggered by the EU referendum and the Brexit negotiations that followed. A 55-year-old female respondent with dual citizenship says: “I had a vague idea of how the EU worked and what it offered its citi-

Eid Special Advertising offers from £25 Over 1.5 million children are at increased risk of waterborne diseases, drowning and malnutrition due to extensive flooding in north-eastern Bangladesh. UNICEF is on the ground with Government and non-government partners to respond to the urgent safety, health, nutrition, clean water and education needs of children and their families. Over four million people in five districts of north-eastern Bangladesh – Sylhet, Sunamganj, Habiganj, Netrokona and Maulvibazar – are affected by extensive flooding. Sylhet and Sunamganj have been most affected, with water flowing above dangerous levels. Agricultural land and critical infrastructure, including power stations and schools, have been submerged. Cases of diarrhoea, respiratory infection, and skin diseases have already been reported. At least three children have died after being struck by lightning. Hundreds of schools have been closed, further jeopardizing the

education of children. After 18 months of pandemic school closures in the last few years, children are once again missing out on learning. “The damage to lives, homes and schools is heartbreaking. In this disaster, as in most others, children are the most vulnerable,” said Mr. Sheldon Yett, UNICEF Representative to Bangladesh. “UNICEF is on the ground to protect children and to meet their urgent needs, supporting the Government and working closely with our local partners.” UNICEF is supporting the Government of Bangladesh’s flood response by supplying clean water, hygiene kits, therapeutic milk and learning kits. UNICEF also works closely with the Department of Social Services to ensure that social workers stand ready to protect the safety and security of children. Raising awareness about drowning prevention in communities is at the centre of the response.

zens. I’ve learnt much more about the EU since 2016 and come to admire the project and its positive impact on EU citizens’ lives.” A 35-year-old Irish citizen explains: “I identify the EU as my homeland now, I identify as a EU citizen before I identify with any nationality.” The survey shows that this is a largely settled population reporting plans to stay put in the longterm, with evidence of multi-generational settlement and changes to legal status to support longterm settlement in the country of residence. However, looking to the future, there is some divergence between those from older and newer EU

member states in terms of migration plans and attitudes to mobility. Among all respondents, despite the majority having settled status or British citizenship, legal status and right to residence are still primary concerns – affecting family relations and shaping thinking on future plans, particularly in mixed-status families. Family and relationships are the main drivers for migration decision-making, both amongst those who have moved on from the UK since Brexit and those who stayed put. They are also the main consideration for those planning to move within the next five years. COVID-19 impacted on people’s attitudes towards their country of

residence, less so towards country of origin and the EU overall. Most EU/EEA citizens living in the UK report that COVID-19 created negative feelings towards the UK (with only a few taking the opposite view) and specifically the Government’s pandemic response. However, respondents praised responses by devolved authorities. A 45-year-old respondent with dual citizenship explains: “My feelings towards Scotland are unchanged, but my view of the UK is more negative due to the incompetence of the UK government in handling the pandemic.” The extensive survey, which included 96 questions, took place between December 2021 and January 2022, a year after the end of the Brexit transition period. It offers insight into a range of issues including migration patterns, residential and nationality status in the country of residence, impacts of Brexit and the pandemic on future plans, family life, political participation in the UK and EU and understanding of identity and belonging.

THE CANDY MEN

London photographer Jon Enoch has released a set of striking night-time portraits featuring candy floss sellers in Mumbai. Never more popular than in the age of social media for some eye-catching likes, the pink sugar clouds are popular for those looking for an affordable treat as India emerges from a series of Covid lockdowns and restrictions. Enoch said: “I’ve been wanting to travel to Mumbai for a number of years, but was sadly delayed due to the Covid pandemic. I felt that the photos of the candy floss sellers portrayed a picture of the city not often seen.” The photo series shows the sellers – the men who live and work in the western sprawl of Mumbai near the cotton candy selling grounds of the beaches and fairs and their unique and varied ways of displaying their goods and attracting a buyer. Enoch explained, “My photography projects tend to capture a fast-changing world and how traditional aspects of a large city are changing – for better or worse – through the embracing of modernity. “The images were taken at night time, partly due to logistics – it’s cooler and usually quieter – and partly because it gives me the chance to experiment with lighting and create a specific portrait of the candy floss sellers.” Jon Enoch is an award-winning lifestyle and portrait photographer and won the prestigious Smithsonian award 2020 for his images of Hanoi motorcycle delivery drivers, and was also nominated for the Sony World Photography Awards, Portraits of Humanity and The AOP Awards.

GLOBAL HUNGER CRISIS PUSHING ONE CHILD INTO SEVERE MALNUTRITION EVERY MINUTE IN 15 CRISIS-HIT COUNTRIES

Almost 8 million children under 5 in 15 crisis-hit countries are at risk of death from severe wasting unless they receive immediate therapeutic food and care – with the number rising by the minute, UNICEF warned as world leaders prepare to meet at the G7 summit. Since the start of the year, the escalating global food crisis has forced an additional 260,000 children – or one child every 60 seconds – to suffer from severe wasting in 15 countries bearing the brunt of the crisis, including in the Horn of Africa and the Central Sahel. This rise in severe wasting is in addition to existing levels of child undernutrition that UNICEF warned amounted to a ‘virtual tinderbox’ last month. “We are now seeing the tinderbox of conditions for extreme levels of child wasting begin to catch fire,” said UNICEF Executive Director Catherine Russell. “Food aid is critical, but we cannot save starving children with bags of wheat. We need to reach these children now with therapeutic treatment before it is too late.” Soaring food prices driven by the war in Ukraine, persistent drought due to climate change in some countries, at times combined with conflict, and the ongoing economic impact of COVID-19 continue to drive up children’s food and nutrition insecurity worldwide, resulting in catastrophic levels of severe malnutrition in children under 5. In response, UNICEF is scaling up its efforts in 15 most affected countries. Afghanistan, Burkina Faso, Chad, Democratic Republic of the Con-

15

As leaders prepare to meet at the G7 summit, UNICEF is calling for US$ 1.2 billion to: • Deliver an essential package of nutrition services and care to avert what could be millions of child deaths in 15 highest burden countries, including prevention programmes to protect maternal and child nutrition among pregnant women and young children, early detection and treatment programmes for children with severe wasting, and the procurement, and distribution of ready-touse therapeutic food. • Prioritize the prevention and treatment of severe wasting in all global food crisis response plans by ensuring budget allocations include preventive nutrition interventions as well as therapeutic food to address the immediate needs of children suffering from severe wasting.

go, Ethiopia, Haiti, Kenya, Madagascar, Mali, Niger, Nigeria, Somalia, South Sudan, Sudan, and Yemen will be included in an acceleration plan to help avert an explosion of child deaths and mitigate the long-term damage of severe wasting. Severe wasting – where children are too thin for their height – is the most visible and lethal form of undernutrition. Weakened immune systems increase the risk of death among children under 5 by up to 11 times compared to well-nourished children. Within the 15 countries, UNICEF estimates that at least 40 million children are severely nutrition insecure, meaning they are not receiving the bare minimum diverse diet they need to grow and de-

velop in early childhood. Further, 21 million children are severely food insecure, meaning they lack access to enough food to meet minimum food needs, leaving them at high risk of death among children under 5 by up to 11 times compared to well-nourished children. Within the 15 countries, UNICEF estimates that at least 40 million children are severely nutrition insecure, meaning they are not receiving the bare minimum diverse diet they need to grow and develop in early childhood. Further, 21 million children are severely food insecure, meaning they lack access to enough food to meet minimum food needs, leaving them at high risk of severe wasting. Meanwhile, the price of ready-to-use

therapeutic food to treat severe wasting has soared by 16 per cent in recent weeks due to a sharp rise in the cost of raw ingredients, leaving up to 600,000 additional children without access to lifesaving treatment and at risk of death. “It is hard to describe what it means for a child to be ‘severely wasted,’ but when you meet a child who is suffering from this most lethal form of malnutrition, you understand – and you never forget,” said Russell. “World leaders gathering in Germany for the G7 Ministerial have a small window of opportunity to act to save these children’s lives. There is no time to waste. Waiting for famine to be declared is waiting for children to die.”

UNIVERSITY LAUNCHES BUSINESS BOOTCAMP FOR STUDENTS AND GRADUATES

Birmingham City University has launched STEAM Hatchery, an intensive training programme, to give 60 participants the opportunity to turn their business dream into a reality with the help of expert mentorship and part of a £10,000 prize fund. The new ten-week programme, based at the University’s new £70m STEAMhouse innovation centre, will offer third year, Master’s and PhD students as well as recent graduates the chance to develop and establish their own company by offering key support, facilities and resources. The Hatchery will see participants develop their business plan with expert input, and be in with the chance of earning a place in STEAMhouse’s Business Incubator, a hub that provides support and facilities to fledgling startups and entrepreneurs. Entrants will need to submit a business plan and present their idea to a panel of judges, made up of local business representatives. At the launch event, 60 participants had the opportunity to network and begin cultivating their ideas and learn from STEAM Hatchery mentors – a group of experts from marketing, finance, intellectual property and other key business areas. The launch took place at the University’s

new STEAMhouse building, a stateof-the-art five-storey innovation centre which will also house the Hatchery participants during the course of their programme. Participants were given an insightful introduction into generating new and innovative business ideas, having a long-term plan, how to be adaptive to changing markets and the importance of working together. It also gave the 60 participants – emerging business professionals from the world

of jewellery, fashion, interior design, logistics and technology – the chance to come together to hear from experts, learn about key aspects of businesses and harbour new collaborations. Sanelisiwe Mafa, a recent Birmingham City University Master’s graduate and owner of her own interior design agency, said: “We’ve just set up our business and could use some expert knowledge, but we lack the funds to pay for those services, so getting them as part of this programme will be incredibly helpful.

“When you finish university, sometimes you wonder where you go from there. This programme gives you extra guidance, the kind you don’t get when you’re studying a specific subject, as well as the skills and confidence to navigate all the different things in setting up a business. It’s also a great chance to collaborate with new people from different areas to enhance our business.” The launch culminated in a talk from Tracy Westall, a non-executive member of the Department for Transport Board

and a business mentor for a range of organisations. Richard Scutt, Head of Growth and Incubation at STEAMhouse, said: “We have, potentially, 60 businesses sitting right here that could all contribute to the economic and cultural growth of Birmingham, which feels truly fantastic. “The Hatchery opportunity is massive. It’s very rare that a programme offers prize funding, let alone the additional support of mentoring and excellent facilities, as well as the ability to talk to a solicitor, an accountant and a bank about important business decisions.” The STEAM Hatchery also ensures BCU’s students and recent graduates are equipped with the attributes needed to be successful in their business endeavours, as well as significantly boosting their employability prospects. Over 10 weeks, they will learn skills in sustainable business models, creating an efficient sales strategy, perfecting business pitches, financial planning and prototyping. The Hatchery and its support solidifies BCU’s position as one of the region’s most entrepreneurial universities, with the University currently ranked in the top 20 nationally for skills, enterprise and entrepreneurship in the Knowledge Exchange Framework.

SOLAR CAR PARK INVESTORS HIT 3TI FUNDING TARGET IN UNDER AN HOUR

Within an hour of opening its first crowdfunding round publicly, 3ti, the UK’s leading designer, installer, funder and operator of Solar Car Parks (SCPs), has smashed its initial £500,000 investment target. Funding will accelerate the roll-out of the world’s first pop-up mini solar car park and electric vehicle charging hub, Papilio3, enable expansion of the 3ti team, and underpin continued clean energy technology development. The initial target on Crowdcube was exceeded within an hour, but the funding round will remain open for 28 days.

“Almost instantly achieving our initial investment target demonstrates a public belief in 3ti’s technology, our vision for renewable energy solutions and the team behind the two largest solar car parks in the UK,” says Tim Evans, 3ti founder and CEO. “The funding round provides investors with an opportunity to back a company committed to decarbonising the UK transport industry

and buy into a dynamic, exciting and unique product: Papilio3. It is expected that 14 million EVs will be on UK roads by 2030. To optimise the environmental benefits of these vehicles replacing polluting petrol and diesel alternatives, it is crucial that an efficient, reliable and sustainable charging infrastructure is in place.” Launched in May 2022 at the Surrey

Research Park, hosted by the University of Surrey, Guildford, Papilio3 can be deployed within 24 hours and provides up to 12 electric vehicle (EV) charge points. It integrates three technologies that are normally considered independently – solar electricity generation, battery energy storage systems and EV charge points. Crucially, Papilio3 harnesses solar power, battery

17

storage and grid energy to optimise the reliability and carbon intensity of EV charging, particularly for drivers who are not able to charge at home. “If we could capture it all, the solar energy that falls on the planet in just one hour is enough to power the whole world for a year. Yet currently, around 40% of UK electricity is still generated from fossil fuels,” continues Evans. “If EV drivers are rapid charging at peak times, then this carbon-rich, expensive electricity is what’s being used to replenish their batteries. This doesn’t need to be the case. Further investment in 3ti through our Crowdcube campaign will enable us to accelerate the deployment of Papilio3 units and inspire a change of mindset for EV drivers. Since launching Papilio3 a month ago, we have received over 100 enquiries worldwide and aim to have at least 30 units in operation by the end of the year.” With an emphasis on sustainability, Papilio3 is built around a recycled shipping container and overcomes many traditional SCP barriers to entry, such as long lead times caused by complex planning and grid approvals and investment requirements. It is envisaged that Papilio3 units will be owned by 3ti and provided to customers on a monthly rental basis. The modular units support 36 solar panels and have battery storage capacity of up to 250 kWh, providing 12 fast EV charge points at 7, 11 and 22 kW.

BIG ISSUE INVEST BACKS MULTI-MILLION POUND SCHEME TO HELP REFUGEES IN GREATER MANCHESTER AND THE WEST MIDLANDS

Big Issue Invest, the investment arm of the Big Issue, is backing a multimillion pound scheme to help improve the lives of refugees living in Greater Manchester and the West Midlands For refugees arriving in the UK, integrating into society is often a challenge. Language barriers and a complex system mean those needing help often do not receive it. To help tackle this, Big Issue Invest – the investment arm of the Big Issue – is backing a multi-million pound scheme to help improve the lives of asylum seekers in Greater Manchester and the West Midlands Big Issue Invest’s Outcomes Investment Fund (OIF) has invested into two Refugee Transitions Outcomes Fund (RTOF) contracts, awarded by the Home Office and providing over £5m of outcome payments to help refugees. Big Issue Invest hopes to aid the integration of nearly 1,000 refugees across the two areas. Loans from the Outcomes Investment Fund will work their way to local authority, accommodation, employment and other partners to support refugees. With a focus on integrating support and evidencing a sustainable approach on the basis of this pilot, this is one of the larg-

est investments from BII’s Outcome Investment Fund. Refugees are entitled to use services in the UK but many don’t, and sometimes end up disengaging completely. Poor language skills and a lack of digital literacy can make things more difficult, as well as the

challenges of demonstrating preexisting qualifications. These barriers also make getting a job that bit harder. During the pandemic, unemployment among refugees rose. Mental health problems and social isolation have also become more prominent – driven

in part by a lack of face-to-face contact. All of the above are challenges that the RTOF aims to tackle, focusing on adult refugees who have recently been granted status, the program will help with employment and housing, alongside integration. In the West Midlands, where nearly 5,000 asylum seekers are accommodated, refugees will work with case workers with the goal of becoming self-sufficient. The network of public services available to refugees is complex to navigate. In Greater Manchester, key workers from local authorities will provide a single point of contact to make this simpler. The programme not only aims to help current refugees, but make life better for future refugees. It is a pioneering form of resettlement policy in the country, with the goal of informing future policy – and helping the UK deal with future crises better. In the 12 months running up to March 2022 there had been 55,146 applications made for asylum in the UK, which related to 65,008 people[1]. The results of the programme, which will run until March 2024,

will help contribute to further government programmes supporting refugees fleeing from conflict zones. Sergio Sanchez, Investment Director at Big Issue Invest, said: “We’re delighted to be investors in the RTOF and to be supporting refugees in the UK through this innovative programme along with our Local Partners and the Home Office, all of whom have worked incredibly hard to launch this Social Outcomes Contract. “The cross-sector and cross-departmental efforts have been very inspiring, as are the opportunities that the RTOF will bring to the people it supports.” To find out more about Big Issue Invest, or how you or your organisation could access BII’s services, please visit: https://www.bigissue. com/invest/

Q&A

20

NEETU KAPOOR ‘JUGJUGG JEEYO’

Q

What was it about Jugjugg Jeeyo that made you agree to the role? When I heard the script, I just fell in love with my role. Although it’s not a very lengthy role, it was very, very impactful. I have a few wonderful scenes, wonderful dialogues and I immediately said I have to do this movie. It was love at first sight. In particular, the strength of my character made me feel this way. The script is absolutely amazing, it is so well-woven. I also feel that every character is very wellwoven and that every character can be identified with. The story is beautiful and different. The emotion portrayed by the film is such a common, universal feeling that everyone has that it will draw cross-sectional audiences.

Q

What attracted you to this movie? What attracted me to this movie was firstly the producer Karan Johar, the director who was absolutely outstanding, and the cast – everybody was so well known to me – Anil Kapoor, Varun, Kiara and everybody so there was kind of a comfort level. And the script was amazing. There were so many things that attracted me to this movie.

Shamshera is set in the heartland of India and will be a high-octane, largerthan-life entertainer with jaw-dropping action sequences and Ranbir Kapoor in a never seen before avatar. Sanjay Dutt will portray the role of the ruthless and merciless villain in the period action adventure Shamshera. He will be pitted against Ranbir Kapoor in the mega action spectacle. Vaani Kapoor is set to sizzle like never before in this film. She will play the character of the most desirable and sought-after travelling performer from heartland India. Directed by Karan Malhotra, Shamshera is set to release in UK cinemas on 22 July 2022.

YRF CELEBRATES 30 GLORIOUS YEARS OF SHAH RUKH KHAN BY UNVEILING HIS INTENSELY GUARDED LOOK FROM PATHAAN!

Q

How much preparation did you have to do for this role? There was a lot of preparation because firstly I had to look like a very ordinary housewife which I am not, so the hair preparation, the makeup, the clothes had to go in a very different zone, which is not my zone, so for me to even get used to that was a big deal. Also, I was coming after a long time so to think about how the character would act and say their lines, I had to prepare how I was going to do this role.

Q

Tell me about your character

My character is the strongest character in the movie, she does what she stands for, her strength is amazing, which is what attracted me to this movie. She is the main person in the household. When you see this movie, you will understand what I mean.

Q

What was it like working with Anil Kapoor? Anil Kapoor is a riot, he is such a funny guy and he is so hard working you feel you are not putting in even 1 per cent of what he is. He is obsessed with his work. He also looks very young, we were always comparing with each other who looks younger. I had good fun working with him. Also I’ve known him for many years from when I got married because our families are so connected so I knew him as a person which was great fun.

Q

What was it like working with Varun and Kiara? With Varun and Kiara, it was gel. Nowadays, you have to change, you have to become that person, you have to become young and I became one of them. They were talking their language and we were chatting on the sets and we were having a riot throughout the filming.

Q

What would your message be to the audience? My message to you all is that you will really love it, there is something there for everyone, for all generations – older, younger, everyone has an issue in the movie, and every issue you will identify with. I really enjoyed playing my character and I think my character is the best

ANIL KAPOOR ‘JUGJUGG JEEYO’

Q&A

LOCAL 4-11

Q

How did you react when you were offered Jugjugg Jeeyo and did you agree straight away? Immediately, no confusion, no discussion, ek second mein! Karan called me up that this is the film, this is the story and immediately I said ‘Done’, khatam.

Q

Tell us about the film and your character. The film is an entertainer, it’s a family comedy – lots of fun, songs, music, high production values, scale, good acting and excellent performances. Today people want to see good performances, performances which look real, which are not over-thetop, which are situational. I play the character of Bheem, who feels that you only live life once and to the extent that you can be selfish also and many people are like that. They become so selfish, self-centred, self-absorbed that they don’t realise in that process that they are hurting other people. I related to the character in a way that I saw a lot of men were like that and it was good to play such a character with so many grey shades and sometimes even black! I don’t want to do only goodygoody characters, it’s too boring. I want some mirch masala!

Q

Do you relate to your character?

Absolutely. Everybody has a selfish streak to them, which can sometimes be disruptive. Some people who have these streaks are too scared to be selfish but I don’t think there is a man or woman who doesn’t have that streak. No one is a saint. For some people, whatever instincts and dreams they have, they keep within themselves, they control themselves but there are some people who don’t care.

Q

Did you face any challenges while filming? No, this was a very smooth journey except for the fact that we shot in two pandemics. The other stress is that you want to do your best. When

I do a film, there is always a hook for my motivation. My motivation for this film was Karan’s father, Yash Johar. We had always wanted to do a film but we never did. So I just wanted to give my absolute best in this film in every which way and make him happy up there. And that’s what I’ve done.

Q

What is your favourite moment in this film? My favourite moments are all the mischievous moments – the parts when I am doing things which I feel nobody is noticing or observing and sometimes I get away with it and sometimes I get caught.

Q

Do you feel this is an all-out entertainer or will there be a message for the audience somewhere? Overall, I feel this is an all-out entertainer but there is a message

and it is not underlying, and I feel all good filmmakers do that. They make a film which entertains you but also makes you think. It’s like when you go to a birthday party. You go to the party, you enjoy the party, but when you leave the party and you get a return gift you feel happier, it becomes a permanent thing. So this film will have the return gift which will remind you to go back and see the film again.

Q

This is your first time working with Neetu Kapoor. What was the experience like? This is my first time working with everyone – Varun, Neetu, Kiara, Karan. It’s always great and exciting to work with people for the first time because you don’t know them, you’re trying to understand them, it’s always very fresh and energetic. It’s exciting as well as tentative and anxious.

CHEF DAVID MAX RIVILLO PEREZ The PASTA DESIGNER Q

Creating such types of unique pasta is more a food science. What do you have to say about it? Chef David: Not entirely, but it helps a lot. After my first design, I realized that if I wanted to keep intact the design and color of the pasta, it was crucial to study the science behind each ingredient involved. Because each ingredient is different and can affect the dough and the pasta flavor in many ways. I think I could not have done it without knowing the science behind it, but it would have taken much longer to get net results.

Have you ever seen multi-coloured pasta with unique designs? If not then you should have a look at Chef David innovation & creation on pasta and you will be shocked after seeing his pastas. He is famously known as “Pasta Designer” and from his continuous food research in colour, designing, and maintaining quality he made unlimited pasta designs & patterns. Chef David Max Rivillo Perez (Instagram A/c: david_rivillo) from Venezuela is a chemist with PhD and a chef. Currently he works as a researcher at the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. He traveled to so many countries for his studies like Spain, Netherlands, Germany. But he started making pasta at the beginning of his professional studies in culinary back in 2016. He makes beautiful farfalle, stained glass silk cloth pasta, stained glass pasta ribbons, striped cannelloni, multicolored tortellini, coral spaghetti, pappardelle with classy patterns, ravioli etc.

Q

You study the science behind every ingredient involved in pasta to get good quality. How much time does this research process take? Chef David: The research process never stops. I’m always looking for new ways to get better designs and understand more about all the ingredients, especially to see the result in look and colors when

Q

You are a chemist with a PhD then why did you choose to be a chef? Chef David: I love cooking and I have cooked all my life. When I was a kid my mother taught me some cooking techniques, since then I always tried to learn and improve my cooking skills as much as possible.

Q

Why have you chosen only pasta as the food ingredient to innovate and not any other ingredient? Chef David: Before focusing on pasta design, I tried for months to master the art of macaroons and sourdough bread, with no success. I failed almost every time I tried. But my relationship with pasta was completely different; I mastered it faster because the learning process is quicker, I could practice with small amounts of pasta dough many times a day. That’s something I couldn’t do with macaroons or sourdough bread because it requires more time to improve.

Q

How did the idea came, to play with so many colors to design a single pasta?

Chef David: Everything started by chance in 2019 when I made my first design to pay tribute to Venezuelan Kinetic Artist Carlos Cruz Diez. He is my favorite artist ever, who recently passed away. I reproduced his artwork “Cromointerferencia de color aditivo”, created as part of the Simón Bolívar International Airport architecture, it’s one of the most representative pieces of artwork for all Venezuelans. Since then, my mind has never stopped thinking about how to get different designs and patterns.

Q

How do you feel when people call you a “Pasta Designer”? Chef David: I like it because it describes very well what I do with pasta.

Q

Which part of your work is difficult to do while designing pasta? Chef David: One of the most difficult parts is predicting how the design will look at the end of the process when the pasta sheet rolls out, especially when it is a new design. Sometimes it turns out something a bit different from what I had in my mind. But at the end of the day, it’s a matter of practicing.

Q

Till now how many pasta designs and patterns you have created and which one is your favorite? Chef David: I’ve created hundreds, I lost count long ago. Stained glass pattern is my favorite.

pasta is cooked. The science behind pasta is more complex than people think, especially egg dough pasta.

Q

Making such beautiful vibrant colored pasta is not an easy task. How do you balance and make such a perfect color combo for your pasta? Chef David: It’s always a trial-and-error process. I’m always looking for the right combination between dark and light colors to find a balance of all the elements involved in the design.

Q

Any advice for the upcoming chefs? Chef David: If you have an idea and strongly believe in it, you have to go forward to make it real. Every obstacle can be faced with the best attitude, good energy, and focus on your goals. Failure is an essential part of the making process. It’s the only way to improve. FEELING THE HEAT AHEAD OF NATIONAL BBQ WEEK?

The warm weather has arrived and the 4th of July (aka the start of National BBQ Week) is swiftly approaching, with hosts across the country locking dates in the diaries and planning their spreads. Plus, with 8.8 million Brits set to go meat-free this year (up 22% YOY)1, the hosting ‘steaks’ have never been higher. However, despite new research from plant-based food brand Garden Gourmet which found that one in five of BBQ hosts in the West Midlands would feel unprepared to serve veggie or vegan guests, hosts don’t need to ‘flip out’ as the leading veggie & vegan brand is on hand with grill-ready meat free options and delicious recipes guaranteed to wow your guests. Indeed, when it comes to catering to vegans, vegetarians and flexitarian guests, there are simple vegan solutions perfect for grilling available to hosts which don’t require buying additional products or resulting in upset guests: Don’t ‘flip out’ with Garden Gourmet’s Sensational Burger (226g, RRP £3.00) – the full burger experience in one bite – with a meat-like texture, juiciness, and a rich, satisfying beef flavour that will have guests (barbe)queuing at the grill. Plant-based food brand Garden Gourmet has ‘grilled’ the West Midlands and found it’s easier than ever for crowd-pleasing barbeque hosts to cater for changing UK dietary requirements; a third (32 per cent) of those surveyed in the region say the amount of plant-based options in supermarkets now makes it easier to provide alternatives for their guests. However, the study also revealed the West Midlands remain unsure of how to ensure all their guests are happy, with 20

provided meat alternatives which the guests didn’t like, and 7 per cent simply forgot to buy meat-free options. However, a successful 46 per cent bought vegetarian or vegan substitutes which their guests enjoyed. Aside from providing for dietary requirements, other aspects of hosting a barbeque which hosts worry about included not buying enough food, a lack of room inside if it rains, and running out of plates or glasses.

per cent admitting they would feel unprepared if they knew a vegetarian was coming to their barbeque, whilst 31 per cent would feel either ‘stressed’ or ‘confused’, and 1 in 5 say they would have no idea what to serve. Laura Mack, Senior Brand Manager, Garden Gourmet, said: “The research shows that when it comes to hosting summer barbeques, hosts can feel unsure about what to serve guests with vegetarian, vegan or flexitarian dietary requirements, but there are many options for meat-free barbeques today that mean you don’t need to compromise on taste, including succulent and delicious vegan burgers, juicy fillet pieces, and sizzling sausages. “Garden Gourmet understands that if you’re not familiar with cooking meatfree items, it can seem daunting, but there

are easy ways to switch out meat-based products for vegan alternatives that all guests will enjoy. “We’d like to think we’re here to making hosting easy, because our range is a onestop-shop solution for everyone.” The study also found, of the 21 per cent in the West Midlands who worry about pleasing their veggie or vegan guests, top reasons include not wanting to buy the wrong thing and offend them, and not wanting to have to clean the barbeque between cooking. Others don’t know what food to buy or serve whilst others admit being unsure how to cook plant-based food. Indeed, 21 per cent in the West Midlands have invited a vegetarian or vegan guest to a barbeque in the past – with 11 per cent of those admitting they asked the guest to bring their own food. A quarter

Alex Head, Founder of Social Pantry and expert caterer and party host, said: “The research suggests more and more people want to be able to cater in a plant based way and accommodate dietary requirements, but that there is still a lot of uncertainty about what this looks

like. Luckily, there are some really easy ways to keep everyone happy! “The huge range of plant based alternatives in supermarkets that replicate the flavour and texture of meat or dairy provide direct swaps, however adopting a more veg focused approach to feeding a crowd has the ability to benefit everyone! “I always suggest shifting the emphasis from a centrepiece to side dishes – not only are they delicious and often people’s favourite part of a meal, but having lots of vibrant colourful dishes on the table conveys that sense of generous abundance that makes people feel relaxed about tucking in, and by offering a range of choices, there is bound to be something for everyone. “Start with great produce – from beautiful salad leaves to the best bread – and invest in dips, condiments and sauces that can transform the simplest of meals. Sharing food is a fundamental way in which we connect with other people, but separate dietary requirements can create divides within a group. “Remember that veg centric food is for everyone – not just vegetarian and vegans – so rather than catering a small amount separately for your plant based guests, make enough for everyone so that you’re all eating the same, with meat/fish as an optional add on. If you focus on making your veg dishes great, everyone will be happy!” Garden Gourmet’s vegan burgers, fillet pieces, mince and sausages can be purchased at selected Tesco, Sainsburys, Morrisons & Asda stores. Many airlines are moving towards Net Zero Carbon Emissions by using Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF). In this Malaysia Airlines also listed their name by operating the first passenger flight between Kuala Lumpur to Singapore. On 5th June 2022 World Environment Day, the National carrier of Malaysia – Malaysia Airlines operated their first passenger flight MH603 from Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KUL) at 12:25 which arrived at Singapore Changi Airport (SIN) at 13:30. This historic flight

was made by B737-800 aircraft fueled by a blend of conventional jet fuel and Neste’s SAF. Neste SAF is produced from 100% renewable waste and residue raw materials such as animal fat waste that was used for SAF fueling on this flight, which can reduce greenhouse gas emissions by up to 80%. Neste, which is one of the world’s largest producers of SAF supplied the fuel through a supply deal with PETCO trading (UK) Ltd which is PETRONAS. The refueling was carried out by PETRONAS Dagangan Berhad

(PDB) at KLIA. The long-term supply of SAF will be made available at KLIA for the potential airlines customers and for the future flights operated by sister airlines under Malaysia Aviation Group (MAG) including Firefly. Neste is fully committed to its ambitious emission reduction goals and is currently expanding its global SAF production capacity to 1.5 million tons by the end of 2023. Philip See, Group Chief Sustainability Officer of MAG said, “MAG aims to be a pioneer in using SAF for flights in Malay-

mize our environmental impacts and plan for more flights powered by SAF for the betterment of the industry, nation and future of our planet. Moving forward we will look to make SAF the cleaner and more viable energy option for our regular flights by 2025.” Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation (CORSIA) is aviation’s global program to stabilize and reduce carbon emissions. In

2027 this program will enter its mandatory phase. For this PETRONAS is evaluating planned developments of greenfield and brownfield biorefineries and coprocessing at existing PETRONAS facilities. PETRONAS aims to supply SAF domestically and internationally with additional operational flexibility to produce hydrogenated vegetable oil (HVO) or Renewable Diesel.

QANTAS GROUP SHAPE ITS FUTURE BY PROJECT SUNRISE By: Rida Khan (Aviation Author) | Instagram A/c: aviationauthor.ridakhan The wait is over now as the Qantas Group got the approval of “Project Sunrise”. The plan was launched just before the pandemic but COVID-19 turned all the things upside down and the project was on hold. Qantas never gave up on the project and continued to struggle till they didn’t get approved. Now the question is what is

Project Sunrise and why is the Qantas group so eager to launch this project? Actually, Qantas wants to shape its future domestically and internationally. There will be non-stop flights operated from Australia to other cities including New York and London. Internationally there will be 12 Airbus A350-1000s ordered to op-

erate the flights. These aircraft are scheduled to start by the end of 2025 from Sydney. This project will also help to create over 1000 jobs as well as many career progression opportunities at a national carrier. It will also improve the journeys of millions of people every year. The main benefit for the passengers from this project is

that they will get more direct routes and therefore less total travel time. Not only this the cabin is specially configured for the improved comfort on long flights and includes a Wellbeing Zone in the centre. Passengers onboard A350 will be treated to luxurious first-class suites with separate bed, recliner lounge chair, personal wardrobe, a next generation business suite, new premium economy seat pitched at 40 inches, a new economy seat pitched at 33 inches and dedicated Wellbeing Zone designed for movement, stretching and hydration. The cabin interior and service design influenced by medical and scientific research carried out on three project sunrise research flights from New York and London to Sydney in 2019. According to the Qantas group CEO Alan Joyce, “New types of aircraft make new things possible. That’s what makes the announcement so significant for the national carrier and for a

country like Australia where air travel is crucial.” “Throughout our history aircraft we’ve flown have defined the era we’re in. The 707 introduced the jet age, the 747 democratised travel and the A380 brought a completely new level of comfort. A350 and Project Sunrise will make any city just one flight away from Australia. It’s the last frontier and the final fix for the tyranny of distance. As you’d expect the cabin is being specially designed for maximum comfort in all classes for long haul flying. A320s and A220s will become the backbone of our domestic fleet for the next 20 years helping to keep this country moving.” “These new aircraft and engines will help to reduce emissions by at least 15% if running on fossil fuels and significantly better run-on sustainable aviation fuels. This order brings us closer to the commitment of Qantas group to reach net zero emissions by 2050.”

“The Australian national carrier also announced the renewal of its narrow body jets as part of “Project Winton” with firm orders for 20 Airbus A321XLRs and 20 Airbus A220-300s as its Boeing 737s and 717s are retired. A220s will start to arrive in late 2023 and A321XLRs will arrive a year later in late 2024.” These major decisions taken by Qantas group for Project Sunrise will reshape their international and domestic networks over the next decade and beyond. But through this project passengers will enjoy a luxurious flight from and to Australia on direct routes.

GAME CHANGER…

HOW PARKING ON RENTED DRIVEWAYS COULD HELP THE COMMONWEALTH GAMES RUN SMOOTHLY

HOW SOARING PUMP PRICES COULD BE FUELLING SAFER DRIVING HABITS

Soaring fuel costs have left a hole in the pocket of motorists across the country, but it could be having an unexpected positive impact on the safety of Britain’s roads. That’s according to latest research commissioned by the UK’s largest independent road safety charity, IAM RoadSmart, which has revealed that potentially millions of motorists have changed their driving habits for the better amid the fuel crisis. Of 1,004 motorists surveyed, 72 per cent stated that they had changed how they travel due to travel costs. Of this number, 38 per cent stated that they now drive more economically as a result of rising fuel costs, while almost one in five (19 per cent) have taken extra care to stick to the speed limit. This respectively represents up to 12.5 million and 6 million of the 33 million people in possession of a full driving

licence in the UK who have adopted slower or smoother driving habits in recent times. The devastating impact of driving too fast is demonstrated by Department for Transport statistics, which show that exceeding the speed limit was reported as a factor in 7 per cent of all accidents, but of these accidents 17 per cent were fatalities. In addition, exceeding the speed limit and travelling too fast for conditions were factors in 13 per cent of all accidents, and these accidents accounted for 27 per cent of all fatalities. Neil Greig, Director of Policy and Research at IAM RoadSmart commented: “The rising cost of fuel is yet another added expenditure in this difficult cost of living crisis, and our research demonstrates that many have been forced to rethink their driving habits in an effort to keep their fuel

www.capitalbusinesshub.co.uk

costs to a minimum. “Driving slower and more economically will no doubt help keep the pain at the pumps down, but another positive impact of this is, of course, road safety. We would urge those who have

adopted slower and smoother driving habits to maintain these habits, regardless of fuel prices. This way, motorists will not only save money on fuel and travel greener, but also potentially save lives.”

With the 2022 Commonwealth Games now fast approaching, parking on rented driveways could help avoid ‘parking chaos’ close by to the games’ venues, claims an industry expert from YourParkingSpace.co.uk. Up to one million additional visitors are expected to visit Birmingham and the surrounding areas between 28 July and 8 August, as fans, athletes, and the world’s sporting press alike flock to the nation’s second city. The spike in visitors to the region is expected to result in road closures and increased traffic congestion, as well as a scarcity of parking options for motorists looking for somewhere to park at 16 locations hosting the games across the region. This has led CEO at YourParkingSpace. co.uk, Harrison Woods, to warn visitors that traditional pay-on-day parking options could prove difficult to come by during the games, and has urged motorists to consider alternative parking arrangements: “The Commonwealth Games promises to be a spectacular sporting event, and it’s great to see such high levels of enthusiasm for the occasion. However, with so many visitors expected in the region, as well as the planned road closures, it could be parking chaos – spectators must be warned that they shouldn’t just be expecting a race on the athletics circuit, but also a race for parking! “However, parking on rented driveways could offer an alternative to traditional pay-on-day parking options, meaning spectators can enjoy the games, leaving the hard work to the athletes!”. But it’s not just motorists who are benefitting from parking on rented driveways, as more and more Birminghambased homeowners are expected to list their driveways on the YourParkingSpace app to accommodate the increase in visitors during the games. Harrison concluded: “Our booking data reveals that Birmingham has always been one of our driveway hotspots, with residents of the second city pocketing a staggering half-a-million-pounds from renting out their driveways to motorists in 2021 alone. And with the Commonwealth Games taking place in the city this year, I’m sure enterprising Brummies are on track for a record year of driveway income.” To learn more about listing your driveway for the Commonwealth Games, visit www.yourparkingspace.co.uk.

With the help of 10 imaginative children, The Hundred, cricket’s revolutionary competition which fuses blockbuster entertainment with world-class cricket, has unveiled an immersive stadium built in the world’s biggest sandbox video game, Minecraft. With over six million children in the UK playing Minecraft weekly*, the creation of this virtual stadium will engage a wide audience of young fans and take cricket into their world to excite them about this summer’s competition. Released a month before The Hundred kicks off in real life on 3 August, the virtual stadium world is now open for everyone to explore and interact with. To get inspiration to design this stadium, Minecraft-loving kids across the country were invited to take part in The Hundred’s ‘Every Block Counts’ competition, tasked with drawing, painting, sketching or building their ultimate cricket stadium experience, with no limits on what it could contain. The aspiring young Minecrafters’ entries were imaginative, and the top 10 designs included everything required for the virtual stadium. Built in Minecraft space, the world features a seethrough wicket with changing rooms views, a rollercoaster, a rainbow arch, a sea creature moat flowing around the pitch’s boundary and a rooftop nature garden. This is the first ever sports stadium built in the world-famous gaming platform through a kids competition.

A BLOCK-BUSTER WORLD!

The shortlisted winners impressed a judging panel, including Birmingham Phoenix women’s team superstar and gaming aficionado Issy Wong, Minecraft wiz and Founder of BlockWorks, James Delaney.

Commenting on the launch of the world, Issy Wong said: “It’s been fantastic to see the levels of creativity from this competition. We’ve seen submissions beyond our wildest expectations and the final build truly is a blockbuster cricket

stadium. It’s been incredible to be part of this initiative; another first for The Hundred as it continues to push the limits in sport and entertainment.” “As soon as I read the brief, I knew that I had to do something colourful. The

arch over the stadium is a rainbow to celebrate diversity” said 12-year winner old Thea Burgess, talking about her epic cricket ball-shaped build with a rainbow canopy. 8-year-old Rosie Dwyer, whose design also made it into the final stadium experience build, said “In Minecraft your imagination can run wild and free, and I wanted this stadium to have everything! I’ve gone for sea creatures swimming around the pitch as you watch the games.” “Our boys both love playing Minecraft and, living close to Headingley Stadium, The Hundred massively caught their imaginations last year” said Peter Dray, parent of 11-year-old winner Samuel. “Both children loved the challenge of designing Minecraft-inspired cricket stadiums, and we’re thrilled that Samuel’s design was chosen as one of the winners.” The Hundred is back and ready for its second year after smashing records in 2021. With family-friendly blockbuster entertainment and fast-paced cricket action in equal measure, fans are set for another memorable summer. Ticket holders can expect sensational live music performances, nail-biting games and even more to explore off the pitch. Men’s and women’s games kick off on the 3 and 11 August respectively, with the final on 3 September 2022.

He will be joining current brand ambassadors, UFC Champion, Khabib Nurmagomedov and his team of mixed martial arts fighters. Starting his football career at the tender age of 6, Pogba is well known for being part of the Premier League club Manchester United and the France national team, operating primarily as a central midfielder. Both aged 29 yet in vastly different fields, Paul Pogba and Chief Executive Officer of Wahed, Junaid Wahedna, met in September 2021 and found common ground in Wahed’s mission to make ethical investing as accessible and affordable as possible, cementing Pogba’s partnership with the global Islamic fintech.
