SUPERMARKET WORKERS CLOSER TO EQUAL PAY AFTER LANDMARK RULING
Four voluntary organisations in West Sussex have been honoured with the Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service, the highest award a voluntary group can receive in the UK. The successful groups are: 4Sight Vision Support 4SVS improves the quality of the lives of visually impaired people throughout West Sussex, offering outreach support, home visits, telephone befriending, accessible tech support, low vision assessments, assistance with and provision of daily living aids that enable people to remain safe and independent in their own homes. The group celebrates its 100th anniversary in 2021. Gurjar Hindu Union Gurjar Hindu Union serves the needs of the Indian community in Crawley, allowing its members to integrate effectively into society. The group offers activities for children, young people and the elderly and provides skills training for its community as well as cultural and supportive services to the Hindu and wider community. Olive Tree Cancer Support Group Olive Tree Cancer Support Group helps those affected by cancer in Crawley, aiming to encourage patients and their support network to be proactive in their wellbeing. The group’s volunteers hope to reduce the anxiety and stress felt by people of all ages and at different stages on their cancer journey and offer a range of therapies and workshops to suit everyone. Streetlight UK A specialist support service for women involved in prostitution, sexual exploitation and trafficking across Sussex, Surrey and London.
AW Facts Did you know? 90% of the UK is within 4 hours of Birmingham
The group offers hope to thousands of vulnerable women who are hidden, isolated and exploited across the region. Through local partnerships Streetlight tackles violence against women and seeks to prevent perpetrators from reoffending. Later this year the groups will receive their awards from the LordLieutenant of West Sussex, Mrs Susan Pyper, who makes the presentation on behalf of the Queen. Two volunteers from each group will also attend a garden party at Buckingham Palace in 2022 (depending on restrictions at the time). The Lord-Lieutenant commented: ‘I would like to offer my warmest congratulations to the four outstanding and diverse groups in the county that have been honoured with the Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service. The challenges of the last year have put immense pressure on the voluntary sector across the country, and here in West Sussex we have seen countless groups and individuals give their time and expertise to help others, and we have been reminded yet again of the vital contribution that volunteers make to their communities. The Award is a tremendous accolade for these four outstanding groups and I sincerely hope that their achievements will encourage other volunteer groups to consider putting themselves forward for nomination for this prestigious award.’ The Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service was introduced in 2002 and aims to recognise outstanding work by volunteer groups that benefit their local communities. 241 charities, social enterprises and voluntary groups throughout the UK have received the Award this year. The number of nominations remains high year on year, showing that the voluntary sector is thriving and full of innovative ideas to make life better for those around them. The winners are announced each year on 2 June, the anniversary of the Queen’s Coronation.
Supermarkets in the UK have suffered another blow in the battle for equal pay after the Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU) ruled employees working in stores can compare their roles to colleagues working in distribution centres for the purpose of equal pay. Before the UK left the EU, the CJEU was asked whether part of European law could be relied upon by people in the UK making equal value claims against their employer. Under EU law, a woman can compare their role to that of a man’s working in a different establishment if a ‘single source’ has the power to correct the difference in pay. The CJEU said: “Where such pay conditions can be attributed to a single source, the work and the pay of those workers can be compared, even if they work in different establishments.” Leigh Day represents more than 50,000 supermarket shop floor workers, most of whom are women, who claim they are paid unfairly in comparison to distribution centre colleagues, most of whom are men. Earlier in the year, the Supreme Court ruled that Asda shop floor workers can compare their roles to those of their colleagues in distribution centres for the purposes of equal pay. Despite this decision, other supermarkets are still arguing that the roles are not comparable. Kiran Daurka, a partner in the employment team at Leigh Day, said: “This judgment reinforces the Supreme Court’s ruling that the roles of shop floor workers can be compared to those of
their colleagues in distribution centres for the purposes of equal pay. “For a long time, employers have argued that UK law in this area is unclear, but this judgment is simple, if there is a single body responsible for ensuring equality, the roles are comparable. “Clarification from the CJEU confirms that this single source test can be relied upon by people in the UK bringing an equal value claim. This means that employers can no longer hide behind the grey areas of UK law. It’s time for supermarkets to accept that the roles of shop floor workers and distribution centre workers are comparable.” There are a number of British laws relating to equality which were made when
the UK was part of the EU. British Parliament has chosen to retain those laws, including ones relating to equal pay, so they still form part of British law. Pam Jenkins, who works at Tesco, said: “To get a judgment confirming shop floor workers can use an easier legal test to compare their jobs to male colleagues in distribution is up lifting. “I’ve always been proud to work at Tesco but knowing that male colleagues working in distribution centres are being paid more is demoralising. “I’m hopeful that Tesco will recognise the contribution shop floor workers make to the business and reflect that in our pay.”
National Charity Provides £4.5 Million of Support to Muslim Communities in Need During Pandemic
UK Charity, National Zakat Foundation, has announced it saw a huge surge in generosity from the UK Muslim community in particular throughout this time, raising a total of £4.92 million* to support those in need over the past 12 months, a significant increase compared to the year prior. For Muslims, the act of donating Zakat, which is understood as 2.5% of an individual’s total wealth, is a vital part of the faith. According to the charity, however, Zakat is much more than a religious obligation. Mahboob Hussain, Head of Marketing Communications at National Zakat Foundation, explains “Zakat is now a lifeline for UK Muslims as many struggle to gain the right monetary support elsewhere. “The generosity of Muslims in the past 12 months has exceeded our expec-
tations and it’s incredible to see how Zakat is transforming lives and making a difference.” The charity, which collects and distributes Zakat within the UK, has so far helped over 17,000 Muslims across the UK within the past 12 months. The foundation have plans to continue this work, with the hope that the strong sense of community and selflessness that has so far been witnessed will continue throughout the remainder of the year. The generosity seen during the last year is at least predicted to continue over the coming months. with a recent survey by blood cancer charity, DKMS, revealing that upwards of 44% of Brits feel more inclined to take part in charitable acts since the pandemic began.[2] Yet whilst the outlook may appear positive, there’s still much work to be done. Whilst dona-
tions appear to have skyrocketed across many charities throughout this time, the need for support has also increased at an equally aggressive rate. “We have received over 19,000 applications within the past 12 months for various funding, mainly surrounding hardship and housing”, adds Hussain. Muslims are falling into poverty at a rate 10 times higher than any other demographic in the UK[3], meaning donations count more than ever. The charity are keen to encourage Muslims across the UK to continue giving what they can in order to help feed the demand for support and minimise the level of poverty within the community. Commemorative Bench Gifted To Lifesaving Charity
MEDIA ADVISORY: Court of Justice of the European Union to hand own its decision on equal value compatibility
The Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU) will hand down its decision as to how employees working in stores can compare their roles to that of their colleagues working in distribution centres for the purpose of equal pay. The decision is expected at 8.30am (GMT) on Thursday, 3 June 2021. The hearing will not be live streamed. A written statement is expected within an hour of the judgment being handed down. Background Before the UK left the EU, law firm Leigh Day, on behalf of supermarket workers, asked the CJEU whether part of European law could be relied upon by people in the UK making equal value claims against their employer. Under EU law, which is still retained as part of British law, a woman can compare themselves to somebody working in a different establishment if a ‘single source’ has the authority to correct the difference in pay. Law firm Leigh Day represents more than 50,000 supermarket shop floor workers, most of whom are women, who claim they are paid unfairly in comparison to distribution centre colleagues, most of whom are men. Earlier in the year, the Supreme Court ruled that Asda shop floor workers can compare their roles to those of their colleagues in distribution centres for the purposes of equal pay.
Despite this decision, other supermarkets are still arguing that the roles are not comparable. According to Leigh Day, if the CJEU’s decision enables employees working in stores to rely on the single source test, it would reinforce the Supreme Court’s ruling and make it extremely difficult for other supermarkets to argue the roles of shop floor workers cannot be compared to those of their colleagues in distribution centres.
FRIENDS OF AL AQSA HOST THE LEMONAID BOYS MEET LOWKEY Two seven-year-old boys who raised more than £100,000 for charity by making lemonade are now looking to help those killed by Israel’s recent bombing of the Gaza. Best friends Ayaan Moosa and Mikaeel Ishaaq set up their homemade lemonade initiative – dubbed “Lemonade for Yemen-Aid” – last year to raise money for the people of Yemen and soon went viral around the world. As part of the young boy’s efforts to raise awareness of the situation in Palestine they are interviewing the rapper Lowkey, who is a British -Iraqi Rapper who merges political activism with music making. He started off in legendary UK hip-hop crew Poisonous Poets in the mid2000s, garnering a loyal legion of fans through a series of thought provoking bodies of work, singles, and performances that doubled as demonstrations against injustice. Since then,
he has proven himself time and time again at being able to deliver socially and politically articulated raps about topics ranging from the war on terror to the plight of Palestinians. The interview is meant to be a light hearted insight into who Lowkey is and a very chid friendly way to educate young people about Palestine. Shamiul Joarder of Friends of Al Aqsa who bought the 2 parties together says of the interview
Worcester City Council has kindly gifted a commemorative bench to Midlands Air Ambulance Charity to mark its 30th year in operation. The Mayor or Worcester, Councillor Jo Hodges, presented the bench on Monday 17th May to flight doctors, Dr David Freeman and Dr Katie White and critical care paramedic, Ben Jones, who work on-board the lifesaving helicopters and critical care cars. The bench has been located outside Guildhall and features a personalised plaque for locals to appreciate and reflect on the lifesaving work of the charity. Dr David Freeman, who initiated talks with the Council about the bench, said: “I’m so pleased Midlands Air Ambulance Charity was able to be recognised for its lifesaving work in the city centre. After 30 years, the charity has saved countless lives across Worcestershire and the wider Midlands region, and I’m sure locals will enjoy having this bench in their area which honours the charity’s fantastic work.” Cllr Jo Hodges, Mayor of Worcester said: “Midlands Air Ambulance Charity provides a crucial service in our area, saving many lives which would have been cruelly cut short without their rapid intervention. I know just how popular and appreciated this charity is, from talking to Worcester residents across the years. I am delighted to unveil a commemorative bench in this, my final week as Mayor of Worcester.” Emma Gray, chief operating officer for Midlands Air Ambulance Charity, said: “In the past year alone, 30 per cent of Midlands Air Ambulance Charity’s operations have been in Worcestershire, so we are delighted that Worcester City Council chose to mark our momentous occasion with this bench. “As well as the air ambulance at our Strensham airbase, Worcester residents also benefit from one of our two critical care cars operating in their local area, responding to time-critical medical emergencies. As our charity receives no Government or NHS Charities Together funding, we could not continue to operate our service without the support of the public. This bench will mark Worcester locals’ support over the last 30 years, of which we are so grateful for.” To find out more about the charity, visit midlandsairambulance.com and follow the service on social media.

HS2 contractor supports Birmingham City University graduates into employment 29-year-old Tareq from Alum Rock in Birmingham studied Computer Science at BCU and graduated with a 1st Class Hons Degree. He struggled to find work after leaving University in July 2020; a situation compounded by the effects of the pandemic, which has had a devastating impact on young people’s employment prospects. To boost his career potential, Tareq joined and successfully completed a work placement with BBV. This led to him securing a job as a Digital Transformation Technician, a role which enables him to fully utilise his computer science degree. On a day to day basis, Tareq works on business improvement projects within BBV’s Innovation and Transformation team. He trains and supports BBV staff and subcontractors to adopt and use new business technologies in the collation and processing of data and information. He has a clear talent for developing applications and is working with teams right across the project to drive innovation.
Balfour Beatty VINCI, HS2’s construction partner for the West Midlands section of Britain’s new high-speed railway, is working in partnership with Birmingham City University to support its graduates into employment. Birmingham City University’s (BCU) City Centre Campus is at the heart of the Eastside district
and adjacent to the Curzon Street site which will be home to HS2’s flagship terminus station in the UK’s second city. With over 26,900 students from around 100 countries, BCU has a vested interest in HS2’s arrival. Europe’s biggest engineering project is spearheading major regeneration programmes right across Eastside, which will
Tareq said: “I’m learning so much here and I really do get to put my academic capabilities into practice to improve the businesses systems and processes in place at BBV. I’m learning new skills, which you can only really develop in the workplace, as I’m working on real projects and seeing and understanding all the various interdependencies and challenges.” breathe a new lease of life into the district and make it an even more attractive proposition for future alumni when choosing where to live, work and study. The partnership with Balfour Beatty VINCI (BBV) will add a new dimension to the unique offer that BCU already provides for its students. With a shared ambition to see future talent flourish and pro-
gress seamlessly into meaningful employment, the two organisations have joined forces in a bid to ensure that graduates benefit from upcoming career opportunities linked to the construction and delivery of HS2. Recognising the strength of the local talent pool that BCU is creating, Balfour Beatty VINCI’s dedicated skills and communities team is actively engaging with the University to encourage graduates to apply for upcoming vacancies which align to their specialist subject areas.
“
Universities Minister, Michelle Donelan, said: Students should not have to move away from their communities to pursue a meaningful career. This year’s graduates will face unique challenges as they enter the jobs market, which is why providing students with the opportunities they need to reach their full potential, regardless of their background or location, is so essential as we build back better from this pandemic.

“Universities and local companies need to work together to achieve this, and I welcome this partnership between Birmingham
City University and HS2 and urge others to follow their example.” Julie Venn-Morton, HS2’s Skills Manager for the West Midlands said: “This forward-thinking partnership shows how we are working collaboratively with businesses and education providers to ensure that local people benefit from the broad range of job opportunities that HS2 is creating. “BCU students are graduating with world-class skills. We want to retain that talent locally and create opportunities for the next generation of engineers and technical specialists to make their mark in the delivery of our worldclass railway.” Although in its infancy, the new partnership model has already led to five BCU graduates securing direct employment with Balfour Beatty VINCI on HS2. A further four graduates have benefitted from work placements, one has received a direct referral onto Balfour Beatty VINCI’s graduate programme and two have been offered Kickstart placements. Shilpi Akbar, Head of Stakeholders and Communities at Balfour Beatty VINCI hopes this will inspire the class of 2021 to seize the opportunities ahead of them so that they too can play a part in bringing high-speed rail to the West Midlands. Shilpi explains: “We are absolutely committed to helping our future leaders get their foot on the career ladder. Through our unique partnership with Birmingham City University, we can do just that – offering the cream of the region’s talent the opportunity to develop new skills while working on one of Europe’s largest infrastructure projects. “We have a monumental construction programme ahead of us which will see us recruit for thousands more roles, across a broad range of subjects, and we want Birmingham’s student community to be at the heart of those
opportunities.” The drive to discover and develop new local talent, capable of leaving their mark on this feat in British transport engineering, much the same as James Brindley and Matthew Boulton did in their day, is an exciting opportunity for Birmingham City University to be able to offer its students. Professor Julian Beer at Birmingham City University said: “Employability is at the heart of the education and training we provide for our students, and the partnership with BBV presents a unique opportunity for those entering the jobs market to play a part in one the biggest infrastructure projects in Europe.
“Having the HS2 works on the doorstep of our City Centre Campus not only brings with it these fantastic opportunities for our graduates, but also unlocks a legacy of future benefits and economic growth for the area, the city and the wider region. “We are proud to see some of our graduates are already taking on this mantle through this partnership.” Once operational, HS2 will put more students within reach of BCU’s state-of-the-art facilities, which are currently benefitting from a £340 million investment. Journey times from Leeds, London and Manchester will all be slashed to under an hour on HS2, providing students north and south with better access to its quality, student-focused education.

Penny Appeal Announce Alex Leith as the new Top Orange!
Penny Appeal’s Board of Trustees are pleased to announce the recruitment of Alex Leith as the charity’s new Chief Executive Officer.
Alex brings extensive experience into the organisation with an illustrious career spanning tech, digital marketing, and finance. Having worked on multimillion-pound campaigns with leading household brands, Alex will bring his corporate expertise into the charity sector, which has faced incredible challenges in the wake of the pandemic. Chair of Trustees of the Wakefield-based charity, Mohammed Jahangir said, “We are excited to have recruited Alex as our new CEO. He brings an incredible wealth of skills to the role. Our interim CEO Harris Iqbal has done an incredible job in the past 18 months. This includes launching a new 5-year strategy, breaking records in annual income, driving a full change management plan as well as ensuring improving effectiveness and efficiencies whilst leading our COVID-19 response worldwide. Sadly, the need for humanitarian intervention, both in the UK and around the world has only increased in recent times. We are confident with Alex at the helm, we can continue to grow in our service to those in need, offering an essential lifeline to vulnerable people around the world.” Alex is also the first non-Muslim to be in such a role within the Muslim-led charity space. It represents the organisation’s commitment to championing
diversity and cross-cultural collaboration. Mohammed Jahangir went on to say, “While the values and vision of Penny Appeal are firmly inspired by our Islamic faith, they are also universally accessible. In Alex we see a leader who recognises the power of communities
coming together for the greater good.” Alex will start in his new role on the 21st of June. He said, “Since its founding in 2009, Penny Appeal has created a truly remarkable humanitarian legacy, lifting generations of people out of the poverty cycle. I was inspired by the
tenacity and appetite of the leadership to strive to always do more for those in need. I’m keen on rolling up my sleeves, learning on the job and bringing my all to the table.” On joining a Muslim-led charity, he added, “Diversity is more than a tick-box exercise, it’s about
recognising and leveraging the strength we have in our differences. I’m proud to have one of the most diverse boards and workforces in the charity sector, together we represent the best of Britain.” Alex’s appointment comes after Interim CEO, Harris Iqbal has chosen to focus on a wider portfolio of consulting work in the public and private sector and scale his family business in the health and leisure industry, whilst continuing to provide senior support to Penny Appeal. He said, “It has been an honour to lead the lifesaving transformative work of Penny Appeal over the past 18 months during a deeply challenging and complex time for the charity. I’m grateful for the support and trust from the board, staff and donors extended to me over this time. I remain ever-committed to Penny Appeal and will continue to work closely with the organisation, as well as with Alex as he assumes his new role.” Entrepreneur, founder and trustee of Penny Appeal, Adeem Younis added, “From humble origins, Penny Appeal has now raised over £100 million for life saving causes both at home and across the globe. With the leadership demonstrated by Harris during his tenure in tough times for the sector, our impact and growth has surpassed our greatest expectations. It is with regret that we see him stand down. Nevertheless, we are really excited about Penny Appeal’s next chapter and are certain under Alex’s stewardship, Penny Appeal will reach new heights and levels of success as we return to our new offices in the heart of the beautiful Thornes Park in Wakefield to begin the next chapter”.

China’s ‘Artificial Sun’ sets new world record
China broke the record of the experimental advanced superconducting Tokamak (EAST), reaching 120 million degrees Celsius in 101 seconds and 160 million degrees Celsius in 20 seconds. This is an important step towards the trial opera-
tion of fusion reactors. The Tokamak device is located in the Hefei Institute of Material Science, Chinese Academy of Sciences. It aims to replicate the nuclear fusion process that occurs naturally in the sun and stars, and
to provide almost unlimited clean energy through controlled nuclear fusion, which is often referred to as the “artificial sun.” This achievement broke the previous record of keeping the plasma temperature at 100 million degrees Celsius for 100
seconds. According to Li Miao, director of the physics department of Shenzhen Southern University of Science and Technology, this is a milestone in achieving the long-term goal of maintaining temperature stability.
Li said that the Breakthrough is a major progress, and the ultimate goal should be to maintain the temperature at a stable level for a long time. He added that the next milestone may be to maintain stability for a week or more. Achieving plasma temperatures above 100 million degrees Celsius is one of the key challenges in the use of nuclear fusion. At the end of 2020, South Korea will reach 100 million degrees Celsius in 20 seconds. It is generally believed that the temperature of the core of the sun is 15 million degrees Celsius, which means that the plasma in the core of the device will be seven times hotter than the sun. Lin Boqiang, director of the China Energy Economic Research Center at Xiamen University, said that the energy produced by nuclear fusion is the most reliable and cleanest energy source and have great economic benefits. However, Lin reminded that because the technology is still in the experimental stage, it will take at least 30 years for the technology to get out of the laboratory. It is more like a future technology vital to China’s green development. The EAST experiment is part of the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER) facility, which is a large-scale global scientific project second only to the International Space Station and consists of China, the EU, South Korea, US, India, Japan and Russia. Its success is of great significance to the peaceful use of international fusion in the future. China invests about 9% of R&D (Research and Development)
Al-Khair Foundation’s Qurbani 2020
Every year at AKF, we carry out Qurbani sacrifices on behalf of generous donors, at our own AKF farms. The sacrificial meat goes towards feeding some of the poorest families all over the developing world. Raising our own livestock ensures that we can keep Qurbani prices low during Eid ul-Adha. This increases the value of every donation and allows us to distribute to more people. In Year 2020, AKF Country Offices along with Partner Organizations mitigated the challenges faced by them during the lock down and successfully implemented Qurbani – 2020 programme by sourcing/ selecting healthy animals, slaughtering and ensuring distribution to the needy families, by following the government guidelines of health & safety. Al-Khair Foundation benefitted more than 3 million individuals across 21 countries (Indonesia, Myanmar, Philippines, Bangladesh, India, Sri Lanka, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Turkey, Palestine (Gaza) Yemen, Somaliland, Kenya, Gambia, Uganda, Tanzania, Djibouti, SUDAN, Malawi, Cameroon, Rwanda) through Qurbani Programme by scarifying 6267 animals ( 2953 goats/ sheep, 3139 cows and 175 camels). AKF implemented the Qurbani programme through 8 AKF field offices and 23 partner organizations.
“The only time of the year that we get to eat meat is when Qurbani meat is delivered to us. It makes us happy because otherwise we would not be able to buy meat” (Beneficiary – Africa).
Al-Khair Foundation’s Qurbani 2021
AKF is planning to organize Qurbani programme in over 25 countries to benefit over 4 million individuals. AKF will implement the Qurbani programme through 8 AKF field offices and over 23 partner organizations worldwide. For an additional fee, we will also provide our donors with the opportunity to provide cooked meals, so that families that have no means of cooking meals can also enjoy meat on this day..

“I want to thank my family, friends, coaching staff and @ CAABase for all their help and support.” Last year, Iqbal, who was only 16 years old, made his debut for the under-18s. He started seven games for them this season before the injury, and he has been excluded since December last year. Despite not playing games in the past four months, Manchester
United is convinced that Iqbal has everything needed to succeed. Iqbal’s form helped Manchester United lead Manchester City by two points in the Under-18 Premier League. Since the 2017-18 season, Manchester United have never won a game again, when Mason Greenwood, James Garner, Angel Gomez and Zhong Taxi were all on the team.

Mental Health in Pakistan:
Local organisations lead charge in delivering mental health resources and support to country in need
Pakistani health experts have previously called for more attention to mental health in the country during and after the COVID-19 pandemic. Over the last three years the British Asian Trust, with partners CareTech Charitable Foundation, have worked with local Pakistani organisations IRD, Sehat Kahani, Taskeen and Aga Khan University to deliver a sustainable model for low-cost mental health support in Pakistan that addresses the historical lack of resources and understanding of the mental health in the country. Currently, 1 in 4 people (50 million people) in Pakistan are affected by mental health issues such as depression & anxiety but only 0.4% of the national health budget is allocated to mental health. Almost 90% of people in need of treatment in Pakistan have no access to any kind of support and there are fewer than 500 psychologists and 400 psychiatrists for the population of 216 million people. To address these systemic issues, programmes that promoted access to mental health services for the poorest, were undertaken by several British Asian Trust and CareTech partners. Interactive Research & Development (IRD), an organisation committed to building healthcare infrastructure in Pakistan established a model to screen clients and provide lay counselling services and referrals at the community level. Furthermore the British Asian Trust, CareTech and the other donors also partnered with IRD to open the Pursukoon Zindagi Wellness Centre at The Indus Hospital in Karachi, offering free mental health counselling and regular structured group sessions and support groups. Sehat Kahani, an all-female telemedicine
organisation, provided outreach combined with online mental health provision in far flung rural clinics. Taskeen, a mental illness prevention non-profit focused on delivering a multi-channel campaign to raise awareness and reduce stigma of mental health across the country. When the COVID-19 pandemic hit last year, the British Asian Trust worked with its partners to pivot their programmes to respond to the crisis. IRD took their lay counsellors onto helplines so that they could respond to the anxiety exacerbated by the pandemic, Sehat Kahani expanded their telemedicine reach, and Taskeen incorporated messaging related specifically to mental health and COVID-19. Additionally, to address the need for remote mental health support, Aga Khan University piloted an online model for equipping parents with support and skills on ‘parent-mediated therapy’ to support children and young people with mental health issues that had lost access to therapy due to COVID-19. The programme has resulted in the successful delivery of mental health related messaging to 10.3m people, includ-
ing 270,000 people in lowincome urban communities and 725,506 people reached through the COVID-19 proactive mental health helpline and SMS messaging. Improved access to support has been provided to over 63,000 people, through access to quality and appropriate support. The need for the programme was

Additionally, the British Asian Trust and its partners engaged key stakeholders, including the President of Pakistan and the Pakistan Cricket Board to leverage their influence to raise awareness around mental health, mental health policies and national quality standards. Ongoing and future support will be focused on expanding the reach of the programme to a further 28 communities in Pakistan, building a greater local presence, and building further regional and institutional partnerships to support delivery and implementation of the mental health agenda. Haroon Sheikh, Chief Executive of CareTech plc. and Chairman of the CareTech Foundation, said:
“We are thrilled to be a part of this innovative and muchneeded programme with the British Asian Trust. While important and significant strides have been made in addressing the mental health crisis in Pakistan, there is still more work that needs to be done, especially as we begin to exit the COVID-19 pandemic and begin to return to normalcy. More people than ever will need to know where they can go for help and trust the services they are receiving. We look forward to working with the British Asian Trust further on this programme in the future.”

CheT Sharma to launch debut restaurant in Mayfair in partnership with JKS Restaurants Chef Chet Sharma announces the launch of contemporary Indian restaurant, BiBi, in Mayfair, London this summer. Backed by renowned group, JKS Restaurants, for which Sharma has worked as Group Development Chef for the last four years, BiBi will sit on the corner of North Audley Street and Lees Place and will seat 35 guests indoors as well as 20 on the terrace. ‘Bibi’, translating in Urdu as ‘lady of the house’, is used as a term of endearment for grandmothers across the Indian subcontinent. The new restaurant’s concept draws inspiration from Sharma’s own Bibi and her ancestral teachings. The chef’s South Asian roots and passion for Indian cultures are exemplary in a relaxed and playful menu influenced by the street carts and roadside cafés from Punjab in the north, to Kerala in the south. Sharma’s culinary pedigree also shines through at BiBi, both in the techniques used to form each dish, but also in the kitchen’s focus on exceptional British produce. He earnt a name for himself as Development Chef at some of
the UK’s most prestigious fine dining establishments - including Mark Birchall’s Moor Hall and Simon Rogan’s L’Enclume - as well as the world renowned Mugaritz in Spain. His academic background, with a PhD in Physics from the University of Oxford, amongst other accolades, informs his exacting and painstaking approach to cooking. BiBi’s guests can witness the meticulous detail and precision with which each dish takes shape, from a 13-seater kitchen counter overlooking the custom-built sigree (charcoal grill). Divided into four sections, the menu reveals a focus on high impact and flavoursome spice blends, as well as wood and charcoal grilling. First comes a selection of bar snacks (£4£6) like the Lobster Claw Vada and the Chicken Liver Maska Bun. Small plates (£8-£12) follow in the Chaat section with dishes such as the Raw Beef Pepper Fry, featuring dry-aged Dexter top round with a coconut ash dosa and ginger pickle; the Gondhoraj Scallop with scallop roe chaat masala and jalapeño; and the Chalk Stream
Trout Jhal Muri. The Sigree section (£6-£60) then takes centre stage with an expansive array of predominantly skewered dishes, inspired by Sharma’s grandfather’s prepartition memories of Lahore’s kebab vendors. Examples are a Green Chukh Masala Thigh; 4-pepper Lobster; and a Dagad Phool Lamb Rump. A selection of sides (£3-£6) are on offer to complement, such as the Roomali Roti; grassfed Ghee Daal; and Yakhni Pulao. Finally, a dessert section (£6-£10) brings an uplifting end to the menu, with dishes such as an Apricot, Buttermilk and Black Sesame Halwa as well as Kashmiri walnut and Pondicherry cocoa. Decadent cocktails (£12-£16) such as the Champagne Lassi, Sparkling Tea (vodka, Napalese cherry blossom tea and fermented rose petal) and an Ice Gola (tequila, calamansi,
apple marigold and chaat masala), are notable for their broad array of flavours inspired by Sharma’s roots. These feature alongside a progressive wine list of 50 bins with prices starting at £6.50/glass and £32/bottle. Curated by sommelier and wine buyer at JKS Restaurants, Seamus Sharkey, the concise list has been carefully compiled to complement Sharma’s dishes. Led by JKS Design Director Sam Hosker, the interiors present mango wood and sandstone furnishings, walls adorned with antique brass and abstract prints. An overall contemporary and simple design achieves authenticity through pockets of detail such as the curved mirrors which echo the classic rhythm of Rajasthani architecture. Intricate patterns on the walls and furniture reveal a fresh take on Indian design. Outside boasts a 20-seat terrace
with rattan chairs and foliage aplenty. Commenting on the upcoming launch, Sharma said: “It has been a long time in the making, but I couldn’t be happier to open BiBi with the team at JKS Restaurants. At BiBi we will tell the story of Indian food through a different lens; pairing impactful flavours with techniques that I have honed at some of Europe’s most celebrated restaurants. My style of cooking is all about marrying the richly diverse cuisines of the Indian subcontinent along with the world-class produce available to us here in the UK.” About JKS Restaurants JKS Restaurants was established in 2008 by Jyotin, Karam, and Sunaina Sethi. The group encompasses the award-winning restaurants created by the Sethis and those they partner with and invest in. It includes restaurants Gymkhana, Trishna, Brigadiers, Hoppers, Berenjak, Lyle’s, Flor, Sabor, Kitchen Table, and BAO, and home delivery brands Motu, ASAP Pizza, and Rice Error. During the pandemic, the group launched e-commerce retail platforms Ambassador General Store, Hoppers Cash & Kari, BAO Convni Store, Sabor En Casa, Berenjak Bazaar, & Home by Kitchen Table, Bubbleshop, Lyle’s Provisions, and Flor Bakery. United is planning supersonic passenger transport by 2029
Ms. Savitt said that
“
Boom’s research shows that passengers want speed, and that faster aircraft can “deep interpersonal relationships and build better business relationships.
“
United Airlines announced plans to purchase 15 new supersonic passenger planes in 2029 and “return supersonic speeds to the aviation sector.” The supersonic passenger flight ended in 2003, when Air France and British Airways retired Concorde. The new Overture aircraft

will be produced by a Denver company called Boom, which has not yet conducted flight tests on supersonic jets. United’s deal is conditional on the new aircraft meeting safety standards. Supersonic flight Supersonic flight means that the speed of aircraft is more than the speed of sound.. At an altitude of 60,000 feet (18,300 meters), this means flying speeds in excess of 660 mph (1,060 km/h). A typical passenger plane might cruise at approximately 560 mph (900 km/h), but Overture is expected to reach 1,122 mph (1,805 km/h)— also known as Mach 1.7. At this speed, the travel time of transatlantic routes (such as London to New York) can be cut in half. Challenge There are two main problems with supersonic passenger travel: noise and pollution. Traveling faster than the speed of sound will cause a sonic boom, and loud thunder or explosions can be heard on the ground. The Boom company got its name from this. Boom limits where airplanes can fly. Usually, they have to slow down until they go to sea, away from citizens who might be disturbed by loud noises. Boom stated that it is confident that its aircraft will not be
noisier than other modern airliners when taking off, flying over land and landing. Another big issue is fuel consumption. Sustainability The core of the Boom plan is to make Overture use sustainable aviation fuel (Saf) entirely. Dr. Guy Gratton, Associate Professor of Aviation and Environment at Cranfield University, explained that this can take the form of “luxury biodiesel,” made from waste animal fats from agriculture to specially grown high-energy crops. But he said that a big problem is that “the world is far from reaching the production capacity required to produce enough biofuels to power the entire aviation industry.” Boom predicts that the “electricity to liquid” process, in which renewable energy sources such as wind power are used to produce liquid fuels, will fill the gap. Demand: Although the development cost of Concorde was high more than 50 years ago, it is believed that it has brought profit to British Airways in the last few years of operation. Concorde is regarded as a luxurious way of travel, and the fare is more expensive than the first-class seats on regular jets.

Pioneering research is Heart Research UK Healthy tip: To Improve first in UK to transform imaging for infants with your cholesterol congenital heart disease Heart Research UK Healthy Heart Tip, written by Dr Helen Flaherty, Head of Health Promotion and Education at Heart Research UK There are two main types of cholesterol, LDL, sometimes termed ‘bad’ cholesterol, and HDL, sometimes termed as ‘good cholesterol’. The reality is that we do need some of both types of cholesterol, but the incorrect balance can be harmful. When LDL cholesterol builds up in the arteries, it can contribute to plaque formation, whilst HDL cholesterol removes harmful cholesterol from the bloodstream. With this in mind, here are some tips for creating a
healthy cholesterol profile. Increase Fibre Intake Fibre, particularly the type found in porridge oats and wholegrains, known as betaglucan, helps to reduce LDL cholesterol levels. Go Plant-Based Diets higher in vegetables, fruits, nuts, beans, and pulses are healthier for the heart than animal-derived alternatives that are high in saturated fats such as meats, cheeses and processed snacks such as biscuits. Eat Good Fats Unsaturated fats, particularly when swapped for saturated fats, can help to increase your HDL cholesterol levels. Excel-
Dr Helen Flaherty lent sources of good fats include oily fish such as salmon and mackerel, extra virgin olive oil and avocados. Exercise Regularly Aerobic exercise such as running or cycling will help to increase levels of HDL in the blood, especially when performed for more than 150 minutes each week. Avoid high Alcohol Consumption Alcohol can increase the amount of fat in the blood and lower HDL cholesterol, therefore drinking less than 14 units per week is recommended.
Dr Malenka Bissell, Clinical Lecturer of Paediatric Cardiology at the University of Leeds and Consultant at Leeds Childrens Hospital alongside the MAGNETOM Prisma from Siemens Healthineers wit The Leeds Children’s Hospital’s Congenital Heart Unit is the first in the United Kingdom to undertake pioneering research addressing challenges in the diagnosis and monitoring of infants with congenital heart disease. The project aims to establish a new approach to imaging these patients by using a 4D Flow MRI prototype software from Siemens Healthineers, reducing scan time to under ten minutes whilst infants sleep in an MRI safe incubator. Congenital heart disease is one of the most common types of birth defect and whilst survival rates have improved, diagnosis and imaging of newborns can be challenging. Traditionally, CT imaging has often been preferred over MRI, due to reduced acoustic noise and faster scan times, while MRI has necessitated breath holds and patient sedation with the associated risk to infants. The use of CT however, requires X-rays and produces a less comprehensive dataset than MRI. The University of Leeds project pushes the boundaries of 4D Flow and cardiac MRI to establish an approach which could provide greater data at a high speed and transform the way imaging is performed on infants. Acquiring a full set of MRI images which provide both anatomical and functional information, can take up to an hour, however, with the application of the 4D Flow technology from Siemens Healthineers, the project aims to achieve this in under ten minutes. 4D Flow provides a comprehen-
sive, non-invasive assessment of the heart in just one acquisition, allowing paediatric cardiologists greater insight with potential to predict which patients may need surgery in the future. Donations led by Children’s Heart Surgery Fund, including Heart Research UK and other generous funders have helped to equip the Leeds Congenital Heart Unit with innovations designed to optimise scanning infants. The new equipment includes an MRI coil and an MRI safe closed incubator, which reduces the noise the infant is exposed to, allowing scans to take place as the baby sleeps in a safe and comfortable environment – supporting improved diagnostic outcomes. “The research we are currently undertaking makes the University of Leeds the first in the UK to scan babies with congenital heart disease this way,” states Dr Malenka Bissell, Clinical Lecturer of Paediatric Cardiology at the University of Leeds and Consultant at Leeds Children’s Hospital. “In combination with the equipment funded by the charity, 4D Flow MRI technology is paving the way to improve diagnostic pathways for these patients. Uncertainty can be one of the most stressful elements for parents, so we’re now looking at how we can use advanced imaging methods to improve our ability to predict when and if a patient will need surgery.” “4D Flow MRI is an exciting advancement, offering the ability to measure and visualise the temporal evolution of complex vas-
cular systems,” states Dr Craig Buckley, Head of Research and Scientific Collaborations at Siemens Healthineers GB&I. “We are pleased to support Leeds with its research and further evaluate the potential of this model to translate into real-world application. Not only could this make for a safer experience for infants, but 4D Flow acquisition has the potential to enhance anatomical imaging, providing the clinician with a much better dataset to help inform diagnosis and treatment.” James Oliver, Congenital Cardiologist and Children’s Heart Surgery Fund Trustee adds: “This exciting new equipment is revolutionising congenital cardiac MRI. For the first time, even our youngest congenital patients can benefit from important research into improving early diagnosis.” Kate Bratt-Farrar, Chief Executive at Heart Research UK said: “We are so thrilled to be supporting this pioneering research, which will make Leeds one of the true centres of excellence for this type of procedure. As a Leeds-based charity, we’re passionate about supporting our local area, and about funding projects that bring about tangible benefits for patients. By reducing risks associated with traditional imaging methods and increasing diagnostic accuracy, this project will have a real effect on how capable we are of providing better care to patients, in this case often very unwell babies.”

When it comes to certain foods, pregnancy requires caution. Pregnant women are recommended to avoid foods that will increase the risk of compromising your pregnancy. Which is why a food safety guide for pregnant women is recommended. Chocolate is safe to consume during pregnancy and could even have health benefits in moderate amounts. However, with every pregnancy being different, we recommend talking with your doctor about the amount of chocolate that is safe for you to consume, depending on the circumstances surrounding your pregnancy. Overeating chocolate during pregnancy means that you are getting too many calories and too much fat, which could result in excessive weight gain. Adding too much weight during pregnancy could result in fatigue, gestational diabetes, high blood pressure, varicose veins, and it also increases the chances of undergoing a cesarean section delivery. An ounce and a half of dark chocolate contain 290 calories and 19g fat, and a similar amount of milk chocolate has 235 calories and 13g fat. Chocolate is also high in sugar, with about 18g per 1.5 ounces of dark chocolate, and about 23g for a similar amount of milk chocolate. Consuming too much sugar during pregnancy increases your risk of gestational diabetes, excessive weight gain, and dental health issues. It is necessary to ask your obstetrician to help determine the amount of sugar that is safe for you and your developing baby. Pregnant women should also monitor the amount of caffeine they consume. It is recommended that you limit your caffeine intake to 200-300mg per day. Chocolate also contains some caffeine, and if you consume it with caffeine drinks such as coffee, soft drinks, and tea, you could be exceeding the amount of caffeine intake considered safe during pregnancy. A 1.5-ounce serving of dark chocolate contains 43 milligrams, and the same amount of milk chocolate has 9 milligrams of caffeine. Consuming
high levels of caffeine could result in a baby with low birth weight, and in extreme cases could cause a miscarriage. The good news is, eating a controlled serving of chocolate once in a while won’t likely harm your pregnancy and could actually have health benefits. A 1-5-ounce serving of milk chocolate contains 83mg of calcium, and the same amount of dark chocolate contains 31mg. Calcium is crucial for your baby’s developing teeth and bones. Chocolate also has antioxidants that protect both your immunity and that of the baby and helps reduce the risk of health complications like cancer and heart disease. Controlled chocolate intake can also help reduce the risk of preeclampsia by up-to 70%. Preeclampsia is often characterized by high protein levels in urine and high blood pressure. This condition can lead to your death or the baby in extreme cases. That said, you need to choose your chocolate wisely. There are different types of chocolate, and some are filled with sugary content, while others have low sugar content. Dark chocolate has fewer calories than milk chocolate, but not everyone likes the taste of dark chocolate. If you prefer to eat chocolate-covered cherries or filled milk chocolates, consider reducing the amount you eat. If there are any underlying medical conditions that could potentially be worsened by eating large amounts of chocolate, it is advisable to skip chocolate until the doctor clears you. Even though snacking on a full box of chocolate is not the healthiest decision, overindulging could potentially harm your baby. But in reasonable amounts, chocolate can be a safe, lovely treat to indulge your sweet tooth or pregnancy cravings. So, is it safe to consume chocolate during pregnancy? Yes, it is safe, but watch your calorie, caffeine, and sugar intake. Learn more on the foods to avoid during pregnancy on childmode.com.

TECHNOLOGY BVRLA EMPHASISES THE IMPORTANCE OF CYBER SECURITY
T: 0121 771 4545
www.asianworldnews.co.uk
BVRLA Director of Membership & Legal, Shashi Maharaj said:
“
IT security and the safe and secure management and processing of data has never been more important to organisations as digitisation continues to expand. We are delighted to have obtained the Cyber Essentials Plus accreditation and will be displaying the logo with pride to signal to members, partners, and suppliers that the BVRLA is an organisation that takes cyber security matters very seriously and has processes in place to mitigate against a breach.
“
The BVRLA has obtained the Government’s Cyber Essentials Plus accreditation following an independent assessment of the association’s IT security infrastructure and processes. The accreditation is the latest investment to enhance the BVRLA’s IT capabilities following attainment of the precursor Cyber Essentials accreditation in 2020 and the recent appointment of a new Head of IT, responsible for IT infrastructure, operations, and systems. The accreditation, awarded by the National Cyber Security Centre’s partner IASME, demonstrates that the BVRLA meets the standards of IT security required to help protect against cyber attacks. A threat that has become increasingly prevalent as digital working increases and criminals exploit the Covid crisis to unscrupulously target individuals and businesses. The National Cyber Security Centre has published guidance to support businesses moving from physical to digital delivery as well as a short leaflet to help businesses as part of the ongoing Covid-19 response.
Successful accreditation shows that the organisation meets standards in five key areas: ►►Ensuring a secure internet connection ►►Applying the most secure settings to secure devices and software ►►Controlling access to data and services ►►Protecting against viruses and other malware ►►Keeping devices and software up to date
THE SPACEX STARSHIP ROCKET PROTOTYPE REACHES ITS FIRST SAFE LANDING After four previous landing attempts ended in explosions, SpaceX successfully achieved the first successful landing of a prototype spacecraft rocket during the latest test flight of its next-generation launch vehicle in southern Texas. This feat marks an important milestone for billionaire technology giant Elon Musk’s private rocket company, which has developed a reusable heavy launch vehicle that will eventually transport astronauts and large amounts of cargo to Moon and Mars. The Starship SN15 exploded along the Gulf Coast from the SpaceX launch site in Boca Chica, Texas, along the Gulf Coast, reaching its planned maximum altitude of 10 kilometers, then hovered for a moment before flying nose down to Earth with aerodynamic control. This 16-story, three-engine aircraft returned to the vertical position under the action of rocket thrust when approaching the
ground, and made a gentle touchdown on its landing gear. SpaceX chief integration engineer John Insprucker said in a live flight commentary that they are down; the starship has landed. The engine was cut off, but the automatic fire extinguishing system trained a steady flow of water onto the landing pad and finally extinguished the fire. The flight took place on the 60th anniversary of the U.S. astronaut’s first spaceflight – Alan Shepard embarked on a 15-minute suborbital mission on top of NASA’s Mercury-Redstone rocket from Cape Canaveral, Florida. Musk announced his success on Twitter and gave a short message in low-key space remarks: “The starship has landed!” Previously, four test flights of Starship prototypes successfully took off but were blown to pieces. SN8 was launched in December. In February, SN9 was launched while SN10 and SN11 blasted off in March.
The full Starship rocket, which will be 394 feet (120 meters) high when paired with a super-heavy first-level reminder, is SpaceX’s next-generation launch vehicle at the heart of Musk’s efforts to make space travel cheaper and conventional. The first orbital spacecraft flight is planned for the end of this year. Musk has stated that he intends to fly the Japanese billionaire Yusaku Maezawa around the moon with the Japanese spacecraft in 2023.

Countries Unite To Fight Pandemic In India Countries Unite To Fight Pandemic in India By: Rida Khan Year 2021 brought disaster in India where the second surge of Covid-19 started. According to the expert’s death toll increased to more than 200,000. The cases are not ending, but growing and because of this shortage of medical aid are becoming the main barrier for Indians to fight with this virus. To overcome this shortage all the nations are coming together to help India. In this aviation industry is playing a vital role. They made the work easier and on time by bringing medical aid in India. Emirates built a humanitarian airbridge between Dubai and India to transport the medical and relief items to control the Covid19 situation. In the media release HH Sheikh Ahmed Bin Saeed
Al Maktoum , Emirates Chairman & Chief Executive said, “ We stand with India to get back on its feet. Emirates has a good experience in humanitarian relief efforts . With 95 weekly flights to 9 destinations ( New Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Kolkata , Ahmedabad, Chennai, Cochin, Hyderabad , Trivandrum ) in India are assigned. First shipment is already sent as a consignment of over 12 tons of multi-purpose tents from WHO to Delhi through Emirates which is coordinated by IHC in Dubai. These three flights departed one after the other bound for Bengaluru, Mumbai, New Delhi. Qatar Airways Group Chief Executive His Excellency Mr. Akbar Al Baker in media release said, “Having seen with great sorrow the impact this further wave of Covid19 infections has had on people in India we knew we had to be part of the global effort to support the valiant health care workers in the country.” Virgin Atlantic supported India by partnering with Khalsa Aid delivered 200 oxygen concentrators from London Heathrow to Delhi. Not only these, pilots of Virgin Atlantic are also helping India by raising funds like training Captain Chris Hall steered an internal campaign to raise funds to obtain further oxygen concentrators . Colleagues, friends of the airline so far raised over £13,000 in three days. Another consignment which came in India is from Dulles, US Carrier National Airlines carried the third set of emergency relief supplies from Dulles International Airport to New Delhi. Flights like this are continuously arriving with the urgent supplies like oxygen support, personal protective equipment, and rapid diagnostic tests to India. According to the data, the US Agency for International Development ( USAID) mobilized masks , cylinders, oxygen tanks & other medical supplies equating
to 2,50,000 pounds of life saving supplies. The supplies of more than $ 100 million will be sent by the Biden administration to India. From Egypt the Egyptian military planes took off to India carrying the medical aid to help the citizens of India. Around 30 tons of medical aid is sent to India in cooperation with Egyptian Armed Force planes containing 300 oxygen cylinders, 100 medical beds, 50 IV pumps, 50 IV syringes, 30 defibrillators, 20 ventilators, 20 electrocardiographs. IAG Cargo with British Airways operated a relief flight to India transporting 27 tons of medical aid. B777-200 loaded with emergency aid with the special team formed to organize the flight left London Heathrow & landed in Delhi. It included hundreds of urgent saving oxygen cylinders & shipments of oxygen concentrators, respirators & blood oxygen saturation monitors. Not only this British Airways donated care packages for families in need. For this John Cheetham Chief commercial officer at IAG Cargo thanked the team of IAG Cargo, British Airways and all the charities involved in the project. He said without their support this special mission providing essential relief to communities in India would not have been possible.” To help India, Germany also came forward sending their A350 – 900 of the Luftwaffe , the German Air Force took off from Cologne Bonn Airport ,Germany to Indira
Gandhi International Airport , Delhi . Followed by two more shipments carried by two Airbus A400M four-engine turboprop military planes. The New Vauxhall Corsa is the UK’s best-selling new car so far this year, according to the latest new car sales and registration figures released today by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT). The New Corsa has been the UK’s best-selling car so far this year, with 20,024 registered in the first five months of 2021. Vauxhall’s electric models, including the all-electric Corsa-e and Vivaro-e were also the highest selling models in their segments, as the brand continues its electric vehicle expansion with the goal of offering an electrified variant across its model line-up by 2024. The all-electric Corsa-e has been the best-selling new electric car in the small Battery Electric Vehicle sector this year, with 2,204 registered, while the Vivaro-e remains the highest-selling electric Light Commercial Vehicle in the UK, with 874 registrations in 2021. SYNETIQ marks World Environment Day by unveiling latest EV delivery van
Rumboll added
“
Our internal carbon literacy training program, the independently investigated carbon audit we carried out earlier in the year and host of other internal schemes are designed to educate and encourage us both as a company and as individuals to act in the most sustainable way possible, not just on World Environment Day, but every day going forwards. We’ve worked hard to understand the true CO2 savings we’re achieving each day, and the next step on Our Road to Tomorrow is demonstrating this to our clients and customers.
“
SYNETIQ, the UK’s leading integrated salvage and vehicle dismantling company is marking World Environment Day with the launch of its new all electric green parts delivery van and the installation of EV charging points at its Doncaster site. Amusingly named “St-EV Wonder,” the new Mercedes Benz e-Sprinter is serious first step towards an electric vehicle fleet for SYNETIQ’s fleet, and forms part of the company’s new internal sustainability initiative, named ‘The Road to Tomorrow.’ Powering the van will be a newly installed bank of EV charging points, which will provide on-site charging not only for SYNETIQ’s vans, but also for any employees to charge their own EV’s while at work. Now fully installed at the Doncaster site, similar charging points are being installed across all SYNETIQ sites in the coming weeks. SYNETIQ CEO, Tom Rumboll, commented: “Unveiling our latest emissions-free parts van in celebration of World Environment Day underlines our ongoing commitment to sustainability. Of course, sustainability and the environment are important on more than just one day a year, so we introduced our ‘Road to Tomorrow’ strategy to ensure that sustainability is at the heart of everything we do as a company.” With a current level of 95.3% of vehicles passed through SYNETIQ being fully recycled, and with green parts use contributing to an annual saving of 5,500,000 kgs of CO2e over the last two years, as well as a comprehensive road map towards achieving further carbon savings, SYNETIQ’s sustainability bar is already high. The Road to Tomorrow initiative ensures that the current levels will be seen as a base line to be improved via revised working practices, employee education and incentives.
RACE CAR BOOKINGS ACCELERATE AHEAD OF FATHER’S DAY
As Father’s Day approaches just weeks before the 2021 British Grand Prix, bookings for motorsport driving experience packages are selling fast, says leading driving experience packages provider TrackDays.co.uk. Indeed, the spike in bookings for a variety of single seater packages comes as children young and old alike across the country look to race into pole position as the No.1 child, just in time for this year’s paternal celebrations. In fact, since the beginning of the current Formula 1 season back in March, the experience day provider has seen an increase in popularity for its Formula F1000 Driving Experience package, which gives drivers the chance to channel their inner racing spirit on one of the most exhilarating single seater experiences in the UK. Dan Jones, operations manager at TrackDays.co.uk, said: “Race car experience vouchers have become increasingly popular over the last few months, as many of our customers are gearing up to finish
in P1 this Father’s Day, whether it’s as a gift for dad or as a treat for themselves.” Meanwhile, the driving experience provider has also seen strong sales of its Jordan driving experiences with race fans looking to jump behind the wheel of a genuine piece of Formula 1 history. With a selection of packages to choose from, it’s actually the most exclusive Jordan package which accounts for most bookings with TrackDays.co.uk. Possibly no surprises there, as this unique Eddie Jordan Chassis was driven by Takuma Sato in 2002, battling against the likes of Formula 1 legends Michael Schumacher, David Coulthard, Jenson Button and Rubens Barrichello, making it the perfect gift for those looking to be at the front of the starting grid this Father’s Day. To learn more about TrackDays.co.uk, including singer seater race car experiences like the Formula F1000 or the Jordan packages, visit www.trackdays.co.uk.
Britain’s fastest growing car brand continues to break records

The company achieved 2,453 registrations in May 2021, giving it a share of 1.57%. Its total sales in 2021 amounted to 10,760 at month end – a greater number than it sold in the whole of 2018. In addition, more than three in 10 MGs sold (31.7%) were pure electric against an overall market penetration of 7.5% for BEVs across all brands. Guy Pigounakis, MG’s Commercial Director, said: “So far in 2021, we’ve seen an incredible sales performance from our dealer network, which itself is growing at quite a rate. As we emerge from the stricter part of lockdown, it’s great to see dealerships so busy and a strong appetite for our models from the British car-buying public. “The EV volumes in particular are fantastic. We are committed to making EVs affordable for everyone and MG is clearly firing the public’s imagination with its combination of great quality, high tech, incredible value and our 7 Year Warranty.” MG currently offers three plugin models in the UK – the established MG ZS EV, the gamechanging All New MG5 EV and MG HS Plug-in, all backed up by MG’s incredible 7 year Warranty and fast-developing dealer network.

Ab crunches to trim that belly fat
The Belly zone is probably where we put on weight first, and it is one of the most difficult spot areas to lose fat from! To truly tame your trouble spots, you need combine cardio with strength training. Ideally, you should do at least 30 minutes of cardio 4 to 5 days per week. Cardio activities can take form of whichever form of aerobic exercise you’re doing—aerobics, dancing, walking, running, biking, swimming, hiking. The key is to be consistent with your exercise regime and to do the exercises with intensity. Indulging in being active all day, would also help you in burning fat as opposed to shunning any physical activity, which would slow down your system instead! For e.g. walking around to do the chores, cleaning up a little, working a little in the garden, so as to increase your activities of daily living. Here are 3 excellent spot training exercises to do to burn that Belly Fat! The ‘AB’ Crunch: This is your typical abdominal crunch exercise and it if done right, it really make your abs work and are super effective to burn the fat off the belly area. Lie on your exercise mat on your back. Bend your knees. Place your hands behind your head, keeping your elbows wide open. Press the small of your back into the mat by pulling your belly button towards your spine. Contract your abdominal muscles and slowly bring your
shoulder blades about 2-3 inches off the floor. Exhale from your mouth as you contract and come up, and inhale from your nose as you come back down. Make sure to keep your neck straight and your chin up. Once you raise up to your maximum, hold the Ab crunch for a few seconds and then slowly lower back down to start position. However, do ensure that you never completely relax back on the mat once you lower back. Do 4 sets of 16 repetitions and increase the sets as your Abs get strength to do more shoulder lifts. Bicycle Crunch: This is a particularly effective exercise as it works to strengthen three different Ab muscles at the same time: the Upper Abdominal muscle, the lower Abdominal muscle and the external Oblique Abdominal muscles. Lie flat on your exercise mat on your back, pressing your back into the ground, as well as reducing the curve in your lower back. Contract your core Ab muscles. Position your hands gently behind your head. Lift your knees up to about a 45 degree angle. Turn your right elbow to your left knee and twist to try to reach that knee and go to your maximum, so as to contract your side Oblique abdominal muscle. Now change your elbow and knee, and alternate to the opposite side, with your left elbow aiming for your right knee. Put in your maximum effort and intensity into each ‘pedal’ move. Do 4 sets of 10-15 repetitions to each side. Ball Crunch: The Ball crunch is excellent for strengthening your core abdominal muscle — the rectus abdominus. Position yourself such that the ball is under your lower back. Take your arms and place them either behind your head, keeping your elbows wide open. Inhale through your nose as you contract your abdominal muscles, pulling them in tight, and using them to lift your upper body or torso off the ball, straight up towards the ceiling, with the ball stationary and firm on the floor. Each time try and lift higher, contracting in your Abdominal muscle, and hence increasing the intensity of each Ab Ball Crunch. Now, gently lower back into starting position and do 4 sets of 12 repetitions. The more resistance and intensity you put in to the above Abdominal crunches, will help you strengthen your Abs further and get the flat belly look faster!

Faisal Malik – The British Asian MMA Fighter - wants to take UFC to Pakistan The 27-year-old comes from a Pakistani background, signing a new contract with the Cage Warriors of the European MMA Tour and achieving a 5-0 victory record in this sport and dreams of one day participating in the UFC championship in Lahore. Once overweight, he is a rising star, waiting for his first Cage Warriors game-but he has the confidence to add his name to more than 100 players from promotion to UFC List of fighters. How it started? Malik had been training in boxing until the age of 15, and started learning Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu at the age of 16. He gained a terrible reputation, which was a troubled period in his life-until he discovered MMA. He said his brother and a few friends were like, ‘Why do you waste time on the road when you can put this energy into a sport? From there, he met the UFC. When I was about 22 years old, I became a professional player. I have devoted my life to MMA because it is not a joke. A good example also helps-Malik’s grandfather had achieved remarkable success in fighting sports, and he was inspired by him. “He wrestled in Kashmir, Pakistan,” Malik said. This has always been a motivation for him and he still believes it is a genetic factor. When asked about his inspiration in
MMA he said, it is George St-Pierre and Khabib Nurmagomedov. That’s why I put them in my gym. My biggest inspiration comes from these two, and how they define themselves as a person, how they carry themselves-in the cage and outside. One of Malik’s goals is to bring UFC to Pakistan. “That’s where my roots are,” he said. Moreover, he added that by promoting MMA in Pakistan, it will promote the entire MMA scene. Malik’s beliefs-and his traditionsare also very important to him. “Everything has a reason. I am grateful that I left the road and en-
tered the gym. I believe this is a blessing from Allah.” Malik is still in the early stages of his career, but has plans to open a gym in Luton and provide free mixed martial arts courses for impoverished young people. He said that Mixed martial arts are fairly new, and there is no real gym in the area from where he belongs. His goal is to help people with mental illness. His goal in the gym is almost to train high-level fighters. When he was asked to define himself in one word, he defined himself as an uncaged animal.
