BIRMINGHAM HORROR CRASH!!
A horrific crash occurred in Birmingham, leading to the death of six people. The horrendous crash happened at the entrance to the underpass on Lee Bank Middleway at the junction of Bristol Road in Edgbaston. The road had remained closed while police and ambulances were investigating the situation. Three men were killed when they were thrown out of their car and a taxi driver and his two passengers, a man and women, died after the vehicle was left on its side. The fourth man involved in the accident was left in critical condition. One of the victims that died was a local taxi driver named Imtiaz Mohammed, who was a father of six and was said to be a caring and hard working person. Mohammed worked for firm castle cars, which has offices located in Sandwell, West Midlands and Birmingham. Debbie Ormsby, in a statement on behalf of the cab company, said: “Imtiaz was a wonderful young, hard-working family man. “We were shocked and devastated to learn this morning that it was Imtiaz who lost his life in the serious road traffic collision which had been reported by our drivers. “He was loved and respected by all who worked with him, and he will be greatly missed. “Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and all the other families affected by this tragedy.” Five ambulances and three paramedics were sent to the scene and stated that it was shocking that the man and women in the first car were able to escape with minor injuries, despite the extensive damage to their vehicle. Ambulances services said that they treated 13 patients in total. It was reported that three other cars collided as they tried to avoid the scene at the entrance to the underpass. Many people took to social media to speak of their sadness, following the news of the collision. Ronnie Miah wrote: “I can’t get this out of my head! Am a taxi driver and was heading towards Broad Street when this happened, my thoughts go

out to the family. “Such horrible news, please wear your seatbelts! “RIP to the people who lost their lives.” Kamran Khattak wrote: “Fathers, sons, daughters, mothers have died in this crash. Let’s all take this tragic event as a wake-up call and drive safely. “Condolences to the families of those who have passed away in this tragic event.” Angela Fowler commented: “This is so tragic. It is
going to be the most terrible time for the injured and the family and friends of all concerned. Jodie Louise wrote: “RIP. Just heartbreaking at any time but at Christmas time just horrific. So absolutely dreadful. Sending prayers to the family of the deceased.” Sharon Shaw wrote: “I haven’t stopped thinking about this all day. The families and friends being told this awful news when the rest of us are just
waking up to a normal day’’ “RIP to all those poor people and credit to emergency services having to face this and go on to never forget these horrendous scenes.” West Midlands Fire Service said 40 fire fighters helped in the aftermath of the “horrific” crash, and were met with what they described as a “complex scene, spread over some distance”.
It is no less than a Holy Event that Commonwealth Games will be taking place in Birmingham in 2022. Birmingham has long waited for this moment as it is expected to be materialised after many decades of failure. For the event to be delivered successfully, as it is not just an eleven day sporting event but possess a huge economic weightage in terms of venues, transportations, housing and a variety of jobs, a wide coalition has formed among the city council, Government, and West Midlands Mayor, besides business and sporting organizations. The announcement was made at the Arena Academy in Great Barr near Alexander Stadium which will be one of the vital venues for the Games. It was made by the Chairman of the Commonwealth Games Federation Louise Martin saying, “Birmingham has earned the right for hosting the event.” Council leader Ian Ward and West Midlands Mayor Andy Street greeted the news as they introduced some of the most talented sportsmen in the city and guided the school students to the venues. Mr. Street said: “The Games will bring social and economic prosperity besides providing the opportunity for the residents to see the world-class sports. The credit for this successful bidding goes to the whole of West Midlands region that recognised its benefits.” Birmingham deserves Commonwealth Games The founder of the Great Birmingham Run and athletics legend, Brendan Foster said: “Birmingham has rescued the Commonwealth games and will put the event firmly back on the map. I never doubted the city would be successful.” Khalid Mahmood MP, a beneficiary of the Commonwealth Games in
terms of residence, transportation, and Alexander stadium upgradation, has been a proponent for the Games bid lately. He said: “It is indeed a magnificent achievement for Birmingham. I pay my gratitude to all of those who helped push this bid forward especially Ian Ward, the leader of Birmingham city council and staff.” “Birmingham Mail deserves all credit for highlighting this project persistently. I was among the hopeful ones while many were dejected.” “Birmingham stars are shining as this event will bring investment and engage young people of the city. This will be a huge boost for
our hotel industries and a chance to enhance transportation system in Birmingham.” Sir John Peace, chairman of the Midlands Engine which is overseeing business investment in the region said: “Today’s announcement that Birmingham will host the 2022 Commonwealth Games is fantastic news to cap off what has been an excellent year for the region.” “The reverberations of this event will be felt by the generations to come. Such has been the dedication of the population of the region for this bid.”

BRITAIN’S COLDEST WINTER!!
Britain faced the coldest winter in 5 years. Temperature’s plummeted to minus 12 in some areas. Streets were filled with snow and ice. The harsh weather conditions meant that schools across the UK were closed as the weather conditions became worse. Atleast 350 schools were closed in the West Midlands, and 180 schools were said to have been shut in Wales. More than 1,000 schools were closed in the UK. Britain also faced one of the coldest nights of the year, as temperatures dropped to at least minus 12. Railway services were closed, due to the weather conditions. Cross Country Trains, East Midlands Trains, Chiltern Railways, Arriva Train Wales, Great Western Railway, Virgin Trains and the West Midlands Rail Network, were all affected. The cancellation’s caused disruption for people who are travelling across the UK, for the holidays. National Rail had warned people to check the train services before heading out. Flights were all cancelled. Airports including Heathrow and East Midlands Airport had many cancellations, causing passengers to sleep on
airport floors. Travel expert, Simon Calder has said that atleast 50,000 British Airways (BA) passengers were stranded at airports across the UK and even around the world. According to the airline, the staff were rebooking customers on to the next flight and even provided them with hotel accommodation. That’s what you call good customer service. However freezing weather conditions not only disrupted trains and airport services, but the motorway and main roads caused chaos for people who are travelling to work. The severe weather conditions led to several car accidents, and hundreds of cars were stranded along Britain’s busiest motorways. Emergency services were warning people not to drive as the icy roads were slowing traffic down and causing accidents. The heavy snow and icy conditions meant that more than 1,000 homes had no power, as 140,000 homes were cut off. According to Scottish and Southern Electricity Network, atleast 750 homes had no power in Oxfordshire.

Black? Brown? Asian? The Minefield of Language and the Labels We Attach To People A few years ago, an acquaintance showed me a letter he’d received from hospital. Its opening line was “This 51 year old Caucasion (sic)…” It wasn’t just the fact that they’d got his age wrong by 10 years but as he remarked ‘What’s my race got to do with it?’ In this case none. It might have been relevant if he came from a racial or ethnic group particularly susceptible to certain medical or health conditions. More pertinently, why the use of ‘Caucasian’? Seeing as we’d only heard the term in American TV crime series or films, we automatically assumed it meant white. A simplistic interpretation and, anthropologically speaking, not correct. Caucasian can be a white or not-so-white person (Google any number of sources for informed debate and opinion). Caucasian led us to consider whether the NHS would condone the use of ‘Negro’ to describe a patient. After all, doesn’t that refer to a black person? An assumption that, again, is largely based on our exposure to US crime fiction. Used by the cops or coroner and usually referring to the mugger/robber/gangster/crook who’s been gunned down by law enforcement (unfortunately it’s still the negative way many black people are portrayed in the movies). Again, wrong. Or probably wrong. Apparently it’s archaic and not used nowadays and could be regarded, especially by ‘younger’ generations, as offensive. Yet the 2010 US Census had a question about race. “What is Person 1’s race?” The options were White, American Indian or Alaska Native, and Black, African Am. or Negro. One of the defences for including the term Negro was that many older Americans still identified themselves as such. In Spanish, Negro means black. So there is a River Negro, people with the middle name or surname Negro, and in Spanish-speaking countries and cultures, there are derivations like Negrito which can or can’t be offensive depending on context (dredges up Luis Suarez-Patrice Evra-LiverpoolMan Utd soap opera circa 2011).
So how does a black/AfricanAmerican react, or how should they react, on hearing the word Negro used by a Hispanic person? I don’t know. Just as I don’t know nowadays whether I should be using the term AfricanAmerican or black. Just as I don’t know whether, in the UK, I should be using Afro-Caribbean, AfricanCaribbean, black or British black. Or Asian, British Asian, or brown, coloured or darkskinned. (For the time being, with the former I’m veering towards ‘black’. But then would you refer to someone as ‘brown’?) In my youth, I’d greet some of my black friends with terms like ‘Rasta’ or ‘baldhead’, courtesy of our shared love of reggae. Transplant to today and with those particular friends, could I get away with greeting them with a term that is popular in hip-hop culture, used by young people and is a variation of the racial slur that is commonly referred to now as the N-word? If anyone’s confused, the word I have in mind
starts with ‘n’ and ends in ‘a’. Work it out for yourselves! I’m not using it because I don’t know whether it’s acceptable to use or not, or who will be okay with it and who’ll be offended. So who defines which terms are acceptable and which are offensive? Governments? Society? Culture? Common usage? In most cases, there’s no divine authority to issue
edicts. Even among black communities in the US, the UK and elsewhere, there is no consensus on use of variations of the n-word. Language has been, and always will be, a minefield especially when it comes to the labels we use to identify people. So, here’s a safety tip - always mind your words.

Two young men were due in court on terror charges in Birmingham as it was reported that they were plotting to assassinate the Prime Minister. The alleged plan was set up by launching a bomb attack on the security gates outside Downing Street before stabbing Theresa May. Details of the set up were reportedly given to the cabinet by the head of MI5 Andrew Parker. The Prime Minister’s official spokesperson declined to debate the attacks however according to reports, two young men had been arrested in London and Birmingham for plotting to kill the Prime Minister. The Metropolitan Police claimed that Naa’imur Zakariya Rahman, 20, and Mohammed Aqib Imran, 21, were arrested and charged and are being held in custody at City of Westminster Magistrates’ Court. Rahman, from north London and Imran from south-east Birmingham, were both charged with preparing acts of terrorism.

Irish border were merely a ‘statement of purpose’ and had no other political purpose. Ruthless MPs were caught in an unfavourable political state that accused Great Britain of “acting like gangsters,” while an important ally of Angela Merkel offered a new idea warning that the UK should not “assume” that there will be a transition period if it does not honour the EU’s commitments. EU leaders responded to a crucial summit on Friday, signalling that they will speed up the process of writing the divorce agreement - which also includes a 39 billion-pound financial charge aimed at guaranteeing EU citizen rights - in a formal treaty. At a press conference in Brussels, Barnier
once again pointed to his political views on the UK’s political behaviour and the situation in which the EU is located. “We will have a final agreement only if we respected the political commitments taken in May on behalf of the British Government last Friday and we will be vigilant. We will not accept any return from the United Kingdom,” Barnier said committed to EU political goals. In a letter to EU prime ministers, council Chief Donald Tusk suggested that they stay together in the second phase of the negotiations. “This will be a fierce race against time, where our unity will be the key again,” Tusk said, pointing to this political challenge that the European Union is facing.

young Mom who raced Mo Farah wins the BBC Best her ill toddler into A&E Sports Personality of the
A young mom raced into A&E after her son had difficulty breathing. However, she claimed she was ordered by the attendant to ‘sit down and wait your turn’. Daveanah Cowie is 21 years old, from Derby, was left speechless when she pleaded for attention but was disregarded while she held her son in her arms. She was ordered to stay in line but rushed to find a doctor who later revived her little son, TommyLee. The toddler’s mom stated her child ‘could have died’ if she had not taken matters into her hands. Tommy-Lee, who has bronchitis, has been in the hospital for over seven days with his twin brother Arlow-Jack, who has a similar condition. Ms Cowie was furious and has tagged staff at Derby Royal Hospital as ‘irresponsible’ and requested that measures be taken to thwart same unpleasant occurrence in the future. Ms Cowie said she is ‘outraged’ by the ‘lack of knowledge’, and she is, therefore, advocating for a better staff training for attendants. The unpleasant incident happened when Ms Cowie raced with her twins to the hospital. However, her son Tommy-Lee is, still on a ventilator fighting bronchitis. Both TommyLee and his twin Arlow-Jack are gradually making a full recovery. The mother of twins furthered: ‘I just can’t believe how anybody could be that irresponsible. If I had waited, my baby could’ve died. ‘I haven’t received an apology, and it’s not on. My baby’s life was at risk.’ A female representative for Derby Teaching Hospitals stated: ‘Our priority is always the safe care of the babies and children brought to our children’s emergency department, and thanks to the expertise of our highly skilled emergency team, the baby, in this case,

The EU’s chief negotiator threw the red line over the Brexit process as David Davis was accused of breaching his faith and violating the code of ethics. Moreover, Michel Barnier once again assured Britain that the bloc of EU states would not return after the decision was made by Theresa May. He also raised trade fairs, warning he had no opportunity for a full deal on the future relationship that would be reached from the time that Brex would be in March 2019. By contrast, Mr Davis suggested at the weekend that a deal trading could be achieved ‘a minute’ after leaving the EU. Many contradictory comments came after Mr Davis tried to calm down a fierce dispute over his claim that UK commitments to the

We are also happy to meet Ms Cowie to explain the steps we have taken.’
Year 2017 Award
Mo Farah won the BBC Best Sports Personality of the year 2017 Award, with 83,524 votes to his credit. Farah, a 34-year-old athlete and 10,000m world champion who could not be present at the award ceremony was genuinely surprised at winning this prestigious award. When the results were announced, fans saw Farah’s delight at having won via a video link. The Somali born, London based athlete said, “To be honest, I am kind of shocked. I didn’t prepare any speech.” He was one of the 12 contenders who was shortlisted for this award. Over the last few years, he has been shortlisted five times. 20 year old student died British Muslims in freezing temperatures in International Peace Initiative
Student, Ian Tang, was found dead after attempting to walk home from a nightclub in temperatures of minus two. He left the Club KA in North Walsham, Norfolk and had not been wearing a coat or jacket. He was spotted on CCTV on Mundesley Road on the outskirts of North Walsham after
leaving the club. Panic arose after he failed to arrive home the following morning and a search party of over 200 people gathered to find him. Two days later a body was found near the village of Swafield, around two miles away from the club.
Chief Inspector Wes Hornigold, of Norfolk Police, said “The death is not being treated as suspicious, but investigations are continuing into the circumstances”. Many parts of Britain including the East of England were hit by snow causing temperatures to drop below freezing.
On Saturday 9th December 2017, British Muslims joined fellow believers around the world to celebrate the birth (mawlid) of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). The Messenger of Allah was sent to establish the religion of Islam some 1400 years ago in Arabia. As part of the celebrations, British Muslims have coordinated a unique worldwide initiative which has come to be known as Mawlid in the City. The objective is to engage with local communities in city centres by promoting dialogue and spreading peace and understanding. The very simple concept of offering chocolates along with a rose themed card as a peaceful gesture to people has certainly gone from a very local idea to something which has become a national and international event. Some of the other aims and objectives of the initiative include: • Coordinating events worldwide to spread an awareness of the true message • A worldwide phenomena taking place spreading love, happiness and peace • Discussions to allow the public to have a better understanding of the Final Messenger A coordinated event initiative, born in the UK in 2012 has now spread across the world and is a global phenomenon. Over 100 locations are scheduled to take part with towns and cities as far as New Zealand and Canada joining a substantial number of UK cities and towns in this international effort for spreading true Islamic values. Events were held simultaneously
and all coordinated via social media and through the group’s central hub in Birmingham. Muslims all round the world walked into city centres, villages and towns giving roses, chocolates and cards containing messages of peace. The project, now in its fifth year of running, also visited 10 Downing Street as one of the many locations visited throughout the day. Greeting cards were delivered to the home of the British Prime Minister along with 12 roses symbolic with the Islamic date coinciding with the birth of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). The project has already achieved international acclaim with Capstone Publishers publishing a section on the project in the United States in an edition of a children’s book. This will aid in educating an entirely new generation of children on the shared human values of peace and mercy. The organisation is a network of “Mawlid Makers” around the world seeking to inspire other Muslims to engage in such efforts. The aim being to encourage Muslims everywhere to lead a peaceful revolution across the world in some of the most difficult social times faced by mankind. The network aims to achieve its lofty ambitions with the proliferation of the true message and teachings of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), known to Muslim’s as a mercy to the worlds. Further events remain in the planning and will be communicated throughout next year.

25 year old, Safia Noor has been suspended as a school governor after she claimed that there was no proof that the Islamic state exists. Safia Noor had been selected as Labour’s new candidate for the Small Heath ward in the 2018 city council elections. Safia has apologised after she posted a string of controversial comments on Facebook. According to the Yew Tree Community School in Witton, Safia has been suspended as a parent governor while an investigation takes place. Headteacher, Shaukat Islam said that “After receiving that information, the trust decided to suspend her pending an investigation which is to be carried out. “But her statements breach our code of conduct.” The labour party had, in fact, declined to comment when they were asked if Ms Noor had been suspended. According to reports, Ms Noor had also posted a comment on facebook about the Westminster Bridge terrorist Khalid Masood who mowed down innocent victims on the bridge, killing four people as well as stabbing a police officer. On the day of the West Minister terror attack, Safia posted a comment on Facebook which said “Can people relax and stop fighting on Facebook? Sadly people died in Westminster today, but people die every day in Syria Pales-
tine Africa Rohingya Kashmir. Need I carry on?!! Grow up and stop pointing fingers!” She also said “Terrorist attack ...and even the terrorist died?! Let me guess, he was a Muslim!” She also commented on the Guardian article which said ‘“Westminster attacker Khalid Masood had interest in Jihad police”. She posted to her followers “So someone got stabbed after the attack last week as a result of media and government claiming that SO CALLED ISIS
HAD CLAIMED RESPONSIBILITY. There is no ISIS, and there is no proof.” Ms Noor issued an apology for the controversial posts. She said that “Having read these comments back I accept I should have chosen my words more carefully,” she said. “I didn’t intend to cause any offence, and I apologise to anyone who found those comments offensive or upsetting. I completely condemn all terrorist acts.”

Meghan Markle joined the Royal Family at Christmas
Meghan Markle had been invited by the Queen to spend Christmas at Sandringham. The 36-year-old fiancé to Prince Harry spent Christmas at Her Majesty’s estate in Norfolk, despite Kate Middleton only being asked after becoming Prince William’s wife. Meghan’s invitation from the Queen clearly showed the warm welcome that the Royal Family have for the US-born actress. She and Prince Harry are engaged and will be married May 19th, 2018 at Windsor Castle. Meghan attended the Christmas Day service at Sandringham as well as the traditional walk with the entire Royal family. The Queen’s decision to invite her is a break in tradition as Kate Middleton was not invited after her engagement to Prince William. The Duke and Duchess also attended Sandringham this year following their decision last year to spend Christmas with the Middleton’s. The traditions included the Royal party walk from Sandringham House to the St Mary Magdalene Church. It’s an event that attracted hundreds of local residents, some of which are greeted by the Royal Family. All the events that took place were strictly timetabled, making up a deeply traditional but personalised Christmas. It started with gift-giving on Christmas Eve and party games such as charades. On Christmas morning they walked 330 yards to the church to attend the service although the Queen is usually driven. For lunch, the men wore suits and the women wore smart silk dresses, but change into black tie and gowns for dinner.

Double-decker’s roof torn off by bridge in Bourneville
The Rohingya Muslim minority in Myanmar (Burma) is regarded by the United Nations as one of the world’s most persecuted communities. Thousands have been killed and more than 500,000 forced to flee to neighbouring Bangladesh in the latest bloodshed which has seen their villages burned, their homes destroyed and their families torn apart. In total, more than 1 million Rohingya refugees are in Bangladesh where they are struggling for the basics of life like food, water, shelter and medicine. With the distribution of emergency aid inside Myanmar prevented by a government crackdown, Islamic Help is concentrating its efforts on supporting tens of thousands of Rohingya refugees in Bangladesh. We have been providing relief aid to the Rohingya community at refugee camps in and around Cox’s Bazaar for the last two years. As previously, our field office, partners and volunteers are distributing desperately need emergency supplies to help those who have fallen victim to the latest crisis. However, we need your support to do that. Please donate to our Rohingya emergency appeal today. Call 0121 446 5682 or online at islamichelp.org.uk
The roof of a double-decker bus was torn off after it passed under a low railway bridge in Bourneville Lane, Birmingham. The top of the vehicle was completely removed when the bus went through the tunnel. Photos show extensive damage to the National Express West Midlands Bus, which was out of service at the time. However, no passengers were on board, and the bus driver was not injured. The bridge, near Cadbury’s World, displayed warning signs of a 10ft (3m) height limit. West Midlands paramedic Ben Pallante was called to the scene and claimed that it marked an ‘unusual end’ to his shift.

All of our services – whether they are provided at the Hospice, in people’s homes or in the local community – are completely free of charge and so we rely on the generosity of local people to help us provide our vital care to everyone who needs it.” Treecycling is supported by the civil engineering contractor, Fitzgerald, who has generously provided staff for the collection weekend, vans and financial support since the scheme’s inception. Nick Coley, managing director at Fitzgerald, said: “We have a longstanding partnership with Birmingham St Mary’s and it’s fantastic to be able to work together on the Treecycling campaign. Our employees always enjoy helping out during the collection weekend and it’s brilliant to know that every penny raised goes directly towards the Hospice. I know our staff are already looking forward to this year’s event and want to make it its biggest collection yet.” Treecycling is part of the Hospice’s ‘Care at Christmas’ campaign – a festive appeal to boost support for individuals and families living with terminal illness. Local charity challenges residents to recycle Christmas trees in city’s largest collection Statistics show an estimated 350,000 trees will be bought in the West Midlands this Christmas, yet only 3,500 of those will be recycled. Local charity, Birmingham St Mary’s Hospice is challenging residents to help increase that figure by recycling their festive firs in the largest tree collection the city has seen. Volunteers from the Hospice are expected to collect 3,000 trees from residents’ doorsteps across the city, in return for a donation. The ‘Treecycling’ scheme will reach out to a range of postcodes across Birmingham and Solihull, where all collected trees will be recycled into compost and biomass fuel. All funds raised from Treecycling will go towards Birmingham St Mary’s Hospice, which provides vital care and support to local families living with terminal illness across Birmingham and Sandwell. Richard Green, Treecycling volunteer at Birmingham St Mary’s Hospice, said: “After all the festivities are over, getting rid of the tree can feel like a post-Christmas chore. With Treecycling though, we can save you both time and hassle by picking up the tree right from your doorstep, saving you from getting needles in your car and queuing for the tip. “Not only is this scheme a fantastic way

Uber suffered a major blow in Europe after Europe’s highest court declared it as a transport provider and not an internet company. Uber argued it was an information society service - helping people to make contact with each other electronically and not a cab firm. However Uber stated that the ruling would not make a difference in the way it operated in Europe as it already operated under transportation law. Uber carried on by stating “millions of Europeans are still prevented from using apps like ours. As our new CEO has said, it is appropriate to regulate services such as Uber, and so we will continue the dialogue with cities across Europe. This is the approach we’ll take to ensure everyone can get a reliable ride at the
tap of a button. Uber labelled itself as an “information society service” that merely connects drivers with passengers through an app. The European Court of Justice has rejected that argument. The Luxembourg court said that a service whose purpose was “to connect, using a Smartphone application and for remuneration, nonprofessional drivers using their own vehicle with persons who wish to make urban journeys” must be legally classified as a transport service. “As EU law currently stands, it is for the member states to regulate the conditions under which such services are to be provided in conformity with the general rules of the treaty on the functioning of the EU,” the judgment read.

Islamophobia
Ross Kemp and armed police called to ‘terrifying raid’ and Racism on the Field at Shirley Post Office
Zeeshan Ali, a Muslim football player, was attacked on the field by an opposition player. Neither did Ali provoke the player in any way nor did he engage in any sort of unruly behaviour. Yet he ended up with a broken nose that was bleeding profusely. Unsurprisingly, the referee did not reprimand the opposition player but simply sent the two players off the field. This incident indicates how strongly racism prevails. This was not the first time Ali and his team had faced racist behaviour, and this surely won’t be the last despite the fact that complaints were registered with the FA. Ali said, “Having played around the world since the age of 12. This has to be the most unprovoked and shocking incident I’ve been involved in. I’m sure if I was playing in a white team, this sort of behaviour would not have happened.” Ali’s teammate Zahid Hamid posted on Facebook that when one plays in the league one just has to “develop a thick skin” when slurs of “Paki” and “I will deport you” are heard. One has to get used to this racial discrimination and racial abuse if they want to play for the league. Despite writing to the local FA and the national FA decisions to reprimand the perpetrators are yet to be made. The lack of action on the part of the FA makes one wonder if the FA actually supports racism. Islamophobia and racism are common occurrences. When formal bodies do not take action against such injustice that is reported to them, individuals who incorporate it in their daily lives feel free to pass their unwanted, racist comments and as seen in a lot of cases inflict violence. The fact that the attackers are not punished is a positive reinforcement for them.
Tamworth shop raids
A number of shop raids have been conducted in Tamworth for seizure of illicit cigarettes and a mass of hand rolling tobacco. Informed by intelligence in order to apprehend the sales of illicit tobacco and cigarettes across the towns including Tamworth, Staffordshire County Council’s trading standard officers, along with the sniffer dog, raided premises in the Rugeley and Burton as well. To sum up all, the stocks seized were approximately 13L of suspected duty-free vodka, 30000 counterfeit cigarettes, 8 kg illegal hand rolling tobaccos, and about £1000 in cash. Tamworth Herald can reveal that four out of nine raided shops were in Tamworth, while the remaining were in Rugeley and Burton. “This is one of our primary objectives”, as stated by the Staffordshire County Council’s community’s leader Gill Heath, “in order to put an iron-hand on the sales of illegal and counterfeit tobacco.” “The supply of obnoxious tobacco and cigarettes was successfully disrupted by our team with the help of efficient intelligence. In order to prevent the illegal tobacco from being caught, some shop owners hid them in ceilings, false walls, and light fittings.” “The residents of the area deserve our gratitude for informing us about the suspected sales of illicit tobacco which can possibly fund criminal gangs and damage businesses.” She added: “The counterfeit tobacco is usually sold at a cheaper price in the market and are damaging to people’s health so its presence can undermine smoking cessation efforts. Moreover, illegitimate cigarettes do not possess the property of self-extinguishing as opposed to the legitimate ones. Therefore they are potentially dangerous to the environment as well.” “The illegal tobacco market attracts the children and young people because of its comparatively cheaper price. From a taxpayer’s point of view, there is a decrease in the money being spent on schools, hospitals, and local communities, therefore, it cannot be, in any way, regarded as a victimless crime.” The raids of Tamworth are the latest ones by the trading standard teams countrywide. Trading standard officers are determined to implement a further enforcement action, in cooperation with Staffordshire Police. “Tobacco detection dogs”, as said by the dogs’ provider for the operation, Stuart Philips, “are the most efficient means of locating hidden illicit tobacco products. Our dogs have located over £12 million worth of illegal tobacco with over 104 trading standards teams across the UK in the past five years.” Anyone with information on illicit tobacco sales can contact the trading standards team confidentially on 01785 330356.
Three masked me received a shocking surprise when they tried to rob a post office in Shirley. The robbers ran into the post office as soon as manager Maria Ahmed opened the security door. However, Maria managed to elbow one of the robbers out of the way and lock herself inside the shop. Armed police then showed up with the one and only ‘Ross Kemp.’ Duty relief manager, Miss Maria Ahmed aged 20, said: “We are made of really hard stuff at Shirley Post Office, and we are even harder now that we’ve met Ross Kemp.” She also stated that two other members of staff were also threatened by the men. Two customers were also in the store at the time of the incident, including a man who stood with his hands up in the air and a woman who stood still in shock. Although the men left without taking anything, Miss Ahmed claimed that “But it was a terrifying experience without a doubt and something I wouldn’t wish on my worst enemy. “The main thing is that nobody was hurt and that nothing was taken. Maria has been working at the post office for four years since she left school at the age of 16 and this is the first time she has ever witnessed something so terrifying. Miss Ahmed said that she felt that no areas in the city were safe. She said that “Everything could have been so different, could have had real crime scene – but we were reopening by late morning today after clearing up the shop and removing all of the police
tape which had been there for forensics.” According to Miss Ahmed, the men were said to be wearing hoodies with scarf masks, tracksuits and trainers. “I didn’t see the other two properly – though one was wearing a long coat to the floor. “The man who threatened me was about 30 with fair skin, about 5ft 4in to 5ft 5in and fatter than normal. “He was shouting, so it’s difficult to tell if he was local, but he sounded like he was. “I was shaking, and my two colleagues were in the shop being threatened so that I would open the door. “They wanted me to open it, and I was screaming ‘No, no, no!’ “I thought they were just amateurs on what looked like a last-minute job.” “The police were here within four minutes but said they were waiting for armed back-up before going in. “When the armed police came there were loads of them. “And then I saw Ross Kemp! “But then I realised it really was Ross Kemp and thought ‘Oh, my God!’ “He just came in unarmed, so he’s got balls. “I used to watch him with my dad
years ago when he was playing Grant Mitchell in EastEnders.” When she was asked about whether she would continue working at the post office, Miss Ahmed said that “You have to work in a job that you love and the people around here are very nice, especially the older generation. “You can’t be frightened, but there is a fear (that someone might come in). “You can’t let (people like this) give you a bad day. “There were so many police outside, and they were really good with us – but I felt better when I saw Ross.”
Parade Horror as Horse Collapses in the Street!!
A horse collapsed in the street dur-
ing the London Parade. Thousands of people attended the parade and were lined up to watch the annual event which featured 8,000 performers from all over the world, including dancers, acrobats, cheerleaders and marching bands. The parade was hosted by the Lord Mayor of Westminster, but the event was brought to a standstill when a white horse that was pulling a carriage suddenly collapsed in the middle of Waterloo Place. The carriage drivers tried to help the animal after it fell to the ground. One witness, Fran Perrow described the scene as ‘very distressing,’ writing on Twitter that the horse had been stressed by the crowd and marching bands - and had reared up before getting its legs
caught in the harness and falling to the ground. She said the horse had been down for around five minutes and that the response to free the creature had been ‘very slow.’ ‘Horse down for 5 minutes, very slow response to free it, but up now and out of the parade,’ she wrote. Another Twitter user added: ‘I did enjoy most of the parade but found it quite upsetting to see horses and donkeys taking part, some of them were quite stressed. ‘They should most definitely not be there, is not a place for animals! Hope the horse is fine :’(‘ The 32nd parade themed Show time was shown around the world to 600 TV stations in a mammoth satellite airing and was said to be the biggest annual outside-broadcast in Britain. Britain’s legendary ski jumper Eddie Edwards was tempted out of retirement
to perform more death-defying heroics for the parade. The event attracted over 500,000 people. The free, family-orientated spectacle, featured around 8,000 performers from numerous and over the last 32 years. The event raised a spectacular £2million for charities across the capital. The parade featured 21 marching bands from the USA and 15 from London boroughs, 1,000 cheerleaders, giant inflatable’s, horses, donkeys, vintage vehicles-pomp, circumstance and thrills galore. The parade started around 12 pm on Piccadilly near Green Park Station and headed to Piccadilly Circus, before ending at Parliament Square around 3.30pm.

ALI FAMILY AWARDED £600,000
A local family has been ordered to hand over their £600,000 home to their neighbours after losing a legal battle over a 3-inch extension into their garden. The Constantine family have been ordered by the judge to hand over the keys to the Ali family so they can recover legal fees after the eight-year battle over the 3-inch extension. Yvette Constantine, 57 and her husband Herman, 66 have three weeks to leave their seven-bedroom home that they have lived in for over 31 years.
Yvette and Herman had accused the Ali family of knocking down a fence and building an extension three inches into their garden while they were on holiday. However, the judge ruled in favour of the Ali family and ordered Yvette and Herman to pay their neighbour’s legal fees. The order has given Sardar Ali, 62, his wife Haliman and son Tajammul, 36, the right to sell the property for atleast £500,000. A neighbour said: “They will lose the house they had for 31 years and be homeless after Christmas.
All because they objected about a neighbours’ fence.” Mr Ali, 62, said: “I don’t want to talk about it. “The time to talk about it was eight years ago but not now.” Other neighbours have supported Ali and his family and said they have always been “good neighbours” who take around food occasionally. Another neighbour also said: “I didn’t know anything was going on there, I don’t know them but I didn’t realise that was happening. “They’re just

normal neighbours.” The Constantine’s complained about the 3inch extension that was illegally built on their side of the house in 2009 which resulted in a civil court case in 2012. Four years later the case went to the Mayor’s and city of London County Court were the judge inspected both properties. However, the court ruled that the extension did not trespass into Constantine’s property.

Death not a terminal event? Or Death not the final end of the journey of life? Or Researchers believe in life after death. The civilian government has also denied international journalists and humanitarians from entering the region. The manner in which the Rohingyas were attacked by the military are horrific. Mohamed Jabair has sustained severe burns all over his body when his roof was set on fire. Setara Begum, a 12-year-old girl, was a victim of a rocket hitting her home. She did not receive any treatment for the burn marks on her feet as a result of which she has no toes, and she has been mute since the traumatic incident occurred. Similar incidents, some more horrific than the
others have been incurred on the Rohingya Muslims irrespective of their age. Over six survivors crossed the borders to Bangladesh and have been living in refugee camps that are overcrowded, unsanitary and unhygienic. Refugees are still entering Bangladesh claiming to be victims of the violence. It is still unknown how many Rohingya are still there in the Rakhine state, waiting to be rescued. Last month, a deal was signed between Bangladesh and Myanmar in order to return all the Rohingya refugees, but nothing was revealed about the details of the agreement.
Terror attack in Pakistan
The US has accused Pakistan of playing a ‘double game’ on fighting terrorism and have warned Islamabad that they will have to do more if they wanted to maintain US aid. “They can do more to stop terrorism, and we want them to do that,” White House spokeswoman Sarah Sanders told reporters. The White House has stated that they will be announcing actions to pressure Pakistan, shortly after the US Ambassador Nikki Haley stated that Washington would withhold $255 million in assistance to Pakistan. ”There are clear reasons for this. Pakistan has played a double game for years,“ Haley told
reporters. ”They work with us at times, and they also harbour the terrorists that attack our troops in Afghanistan. “That game is not acceptable to this administration. We expect far more cooperation from Pakistan in the fight against terrorism.” These comments caused President Donald Trump to angrily tweet that the United States had been rewarded with “nothing but lies and deceit” for “foolishly” giving Pakistan more than $33 billion in aid in the past 15 years. “They give safe haven to the terrorists we hunt in Afghanistan, with little help. No more!” he tweeted. Pakistan civilian and Military chief rejected the

‘incomprehensible’ U.S comments summoned the American Ambassador, David Hale to explain Trump’s tweet. Pakistani U.N Ambassador, Maleeha Lodhi explained in a statement that her countries fight against terrorism was not based on any consideration of aid but on national interests and principles. “We have contributed and sacrificed the most in fighting international terrorism and carried out the largest counter terrorism operation anywhere in the world,” Lodhi said. “We can review our cooperation if it is not appreciated.” At the state department, spokeswomen Heather Nauert said that Pakistan knew what it needed to
do, including taking action against the Haqqani network and other militants. She also stated that Pakistan needs to earn the money that the US has provided in the past in foreign military assistance. Pakistani Prime Minister, Shahid Khaqan Abbasi, chaired a National Security Committee meeting of civilian and military chiefs, focusing on Trump’s tweet. The committee did not name Trump but spoke of ‘deep disappointment’ at a slew of critical comments from U.S officials over the past few months.

Researchers believe in life after death
Rohingya Crisis Continues The Rohingya crisis continues. In a report by Médecins Sans Frontières, also known as Doctors Without Borders, at least 6700 Rohingyas have been killed by the Myanmar security forces. This took place in the Rakhine state when the Myanmar government marched up to the villages- setting fire to the houses, inflicting violence on the villagers- mutilating them or killing them. The UN calls this move by the Myanmar government ‘ethnic cleansing’- a process of getting rid of the Rohingya Muslims in Burma. The Burma government, on the other hand, has denied all such allegations and said that 400 of the 732 children that have died in the Rakhine state were part of extremist terrorist groups and the rest of the violence was inflicted by the military forces. The military claims that they were only responding to the coordinated attacks by rebel groups on the border post.

Nine people were killed and forty injured when an Islamic State bomber blew himself up outside Bethel Memorial Methodist Church in Quetta’s high-security zone in Pakistan. A lot of the casualties were a result of the second attacker who fired upon the worshippers. The second attacker did not detonate his bomb and after an intense exchange of gunfire was shot down by the police. 400 Christian’s were attending the Sunday service and had it not been for the police nearby and their quick response, there would have been many more casualties. Mir Sarfraz Bugti, Balochistan Home Minister, said that on the basis of the weapons that the terrorists possessed it looked like they wanted to take hostages. Another official said that the two attackers are believed to be of the age 16 and 20. They each had 15 kgs of explosives strapped to their bodies. The Islamic State has claimed responsibility for this terrorist attack. The terror groups Amaq News Agency uploaded online that
the two bombers had attacked the church, but no further details were provided. Pakistani officials as in the past deny these claims of this being an Islamic State influenced attack despite the group claiming it as one if its own. The attack came a few days before Christmas. Christians are an ethnic minority in Pakistan, and only 2% of Christians are currently living in Pakistan. From the 2002 grenade attacks in the church in Islamabad to the bombings in the churches in Lahore, Christians have been targets of terror attacks in Pakistan.
The long-standing debate of whether there is life after death has possibly come to rest. British physicist Sir Roger Penrose concludes that the physical world that we live in is only our perception. When we die, it is only our physical bodies that meet their end, the rest of it exists in the form of quantum information. Researchers Stuart Hameroff and Penrose have found evidence of the existence of “protein-based microtubules—a structural component of human cells—carry quantum information— information stored at a sub-atomic level.” This discovery reveals that when a person dies, the aforementioned quantum information is released from the microtubules into the universe. Other researchers have also surmised that at the end of a person’s life, their consciousness travels to another universe. Another new theory by Robert Lanza about the existence of soul is explained in “Beyond Biocentrism: Rethinking Time, Space, Consciousness, and the Illusion of Death”. Lanza in this new scientific theory suggests that human beings are immortal. As biocentrism hypothesizes, time and space are abstract concepts. They are not as concrete a concept that we make them to be. Thus, Lanza deduces that
death is not a terminal event. Professor Hans-Peter Dur of Max Planck Institute for Physics in Munich applies the “waveparticle dualism” of the smallest particles to the dualism between the body and the soul. Dur believes that a universal code is applied to all living and dead matter- and thus agrees in existence after death. He explains his perspective in an interview. He says that life after death is an infinite reality which is much bigger than what we can comprehend. Consequently, we are already rooted in the afterworld. Dur says that when he plans, he makes a conscious decision to write his existence in the world in his brain which he calls ‘a sort of hard drive on the tangible’ In this way when he dies, he does not lose any information stored in his hard drive and in turn his consciousness. Thus, even though the body dies, the spiritual quantum field continues to exist. Hence, he ergo the rest of the humans are immortal. The theories mentioned above are recent ones. Each of them destroys our perception of deaththe finality which comes with it. Human beings leave behind something at the end of their life- some existence in Dur’s belief, their soul in Lanza’s theory, tremendous amounts of energy in Penrose’s research.

India-Pakistan, Suicide bomb attack kills at hope for better least 40 people at a Shiite Muslim cultural centre in Kabul relations?
The alleged role of Pakistan in the Gujarat Assembly Elections which involved a meeting with the Congress leaders, the High Commissioner and former ministers of Pakistan has stirred several controversies. In order to curtail the conflict, Ajay Bisaria, the newly appointed 25th Indian High Commissioner to Pakistan visited the neighbouring country through Attari land. In a brief interview, Bisaria stated that he hoped to strengthen ties with Pakistan and try to create an atmosphere of confidence. He believes that the relations between India and Pakistan should be different from their past. In the Gujarat Assembly Elections, the Indian Prime Minister, Narendra Modi alleged that Pakistan was interfering with the Gujarat elections. He also
enquired about the meeting between the Pakistani officials and the Congress leaders. Pakistan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Mohammad Faisal lashed out on twitter saying, “India should stop dragging Pakistan into its electoral debate and win victories on its own strength rather than fabricated conspiracies, which are utterly baseless and irresponsible.” While these disputes occurred, Bisaria was given a ceremonial Guard of Honour at the historic Attari border. He was also seen visiting the Partition Museum in Amritsar revisiting the historical past. Is there still hope to diffuse tensions between the two countries? Or is there still hope to diffuse tensions between the two countries.
The 10th death anniversary of Benazir Bhutto
The 10th death anniversary of former prime minister Benazir Bhutto is being observed Dec 27, 2017 . All arrangements for the congregation at Garhi Khuda Bux have been finalized with stepped up security to avoid any untoward incident on the occasion. A large number of leaders and workers of Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) are expected to visit the last abode of the first Muslim woman elected as Prime Minister to pay respects. The convoys of the leaders and workers from Punjab and other provinces have reached Larkana to attend the death anniversary of their martyred leader. On Dec 27, 2007 former prime minister Benazir Bhutto was assassinated soon after she finished an election rally at Liaquat Bagh in garrison city of Rawalpindi. A suicide bomber shot at her and then blew himself up in a gun and bomb attack on the fateful day. Ten years down the road, the prime suspects behind her assassination have not been brought to book yet. Of late, an anti-terrorism court acquitted five sus-
pects and awarded imprisonment of 17 years to two police officers – Saud Aziz and Khurram Shahzad – in the assassination of the slain PPP leader. Later, a division bench of the Lahore High Court suspended the conviction of the two officers and released them on bail against a surety of Rs one million each. Former military dictator Pervaiz Musharraf, who PPP alleged was behind her assassination, was declared fugitive by the court in the case. Benazir Bhutto, the daughter of Pakistan’s first democratically elected premier Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, entered in politics after the elected government of her father was removed in a military coup in July 1977 and was hanged on April 4, 1979 by the regime of General Zia-ul Haq after sham court trial. After untiring and arduous struggle as well as sacrifices, she became prime minister twice in the 1990s, but her governments were dissolved before completing mandated tenure.
ISIS has claimed responsibility for a suicide bombing that took place at a Shia cultural centre in Kabul, that killed atleast 40 people and injured 80. The extremist group targeted the centre with three bombs followed by a suicide bombing in a statement on it’s propaganda outlet Amaq. A few of the explosions were set off in the basement of the building where people had gathered during a ceremony to mark the 3th anniversary of the soviet invasion in the country. Afghan president Ashraf Ghani said: ‘The terrorist have killed our people. The terrorists have attacked our mosques, our holy places and now our cultural centre.’
He also called the attack a ‘crime against humanity’. One survivor said that at least one of the blasts went off as people convened at an Iranian-funded social and cultural activity centre for a meeting. The attack took place opposite the offices of the Afghan Voice news agency. Sayed Abbas Hussaini, a journalist at the agency, said one reporter at the agency had been killed and another injured. Wahid Mujro, spokesman for the public
health ministry, says the toll is at 40 killed and 80 injured.
Time for Afghanistan and US to do more for Pakistan
Director General of Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), Maj Gen Asif, Ghafoor has stated that ‘it is time Afghanistan and the US do more for Pakistan.’ Referring to the United States’ (US) demands to act against the alleged presence of terrorist elements in Pakistan, Maj Gen Asif Ghafoor has stated that “No organised infrastructure of any banned organisation is present in Pakistan. We have fought an imposed and imported war twice in Pakistan and now we cannot do any more for anyone.” “Whatever we are doing, and we will do, is solely for the people of Pakistan. The aid we received (from the US) was reimbursement for the support we gave to the coalition for its fight against Al Qaeda. Had we not supported the US and Afghanistan, they would never have been able to defeat Al Qaeda,” he added. “There are no facilitators [of terrorist groups] in Pakistan and we have gone a long way towards supporting peace in the region,” Maj Gen Ghafoor insisted, reiterating Pakistan’s stance on the US’s repetitive demand for the country to “do more”. After discussing measures taken by Pakistan to stop cross-border infiltration of terrorists, Ghafoor claimed that “We have started the construction of forts and posts on the Afghan border for effective border management — what more does the US and Afghanistan want from us?” “No country is more interested in Afghan peace than us, as we know that peace
there [Afghanistan] means peace in Pakistan,” the DG ISPR stressing, adding that the US needs to check India’s role in the Afghan region. “No amount of coercion can work — it is only trust-based cooperation that can bring enduring peace to the region,” he said “What kind of friends are we that we are being given notices [by the US]?” he asked, adding that while Pakistan Army was willing to work with its friends, it cannot compromise on its respect. Moving on to the Indian army’s recent claims that it infiltrated Pakistan’s borders, Maj Gen Ghafoor said: “India recently claimed that 10 of their soldiers came in Pakistan’s territory and killed Pakistani soldiers. But this is all false propaganda for their domestic audience to take the focus off the effective political struggle they are facing for Kashmir’s freedom.” Regarding India’s complaints on Kulbushan Jadhav’s meeting with his mother and wife, Maj Gen Ghafoor said: “India always looks to reduce the relevance of any gestures that Pakistan makes. However, every effort that anti-Pakistan

elements make, we will counter.” “The Foreign Office has given a detailed response [to the Indian accusations]. Even if we do something as a good gesture, the Indian media will colour it in a negative light. We allowed Jadhav to meet his family as a responsible state — if we were irresponsible, we would have given in to Indian pressure and allowed consular access to him,” the DG ISPR said. He concluded: “This will not impact the case at all.” He also discussed the army’s presence on the borders, stating that “We have fought well on western borders despite the threats that linger on the eastern border, but danger has not subsided yet.” “When we started action in Fata, the troublemakers turned to Balochistan,” he observed. He added that the purpose of the programme was to provide resources to help speed up development, provide security, carry out action against terrorism, and cleanse the region of separatist elements. “As a result of the programme, over 2,000 Baloch nationalists have given up their arms,” he stated. While answering a question regarding Maryam Nawaz and Nawaz Sharif’s continuous tirade against the armed forces, Maj Gen Ghafoor stated that, “We will maintain our silence on the matter as Pakistan’s armed forces are well aware of the threats and challenges we are facing and our achievements against them; thus we will not be distracted.”
Three months after ending a ban on Saudi women driving cars, King Salman issued a decree stating that from next June onwards, women will be able to drive motorcycles and trucks. However, even though there won’t be separate nameplates for female drivers, those who violate traffic rules or are involved in road accidents will be dealt with at special centre’s run by women. The Saudi General Directorate of Traffic released the details on the Saudi Press Agency.

Statistics show an increase in women taking over their family business
In 1977 West Germany, women did not have the right to work unless they had their husband’s permission. This meant that women who were the heir to their family business could not necessarily be one if they did not have their husband’s permission. Japan has an unusual way of dealing with the so-called ‘problem’ of running a family business without a male successor- they simply adopt a son. Kazunori Kaneko of the consultancy Business Succession Center says that about 10% of the family businesses that do not have a male heir adopt a son. In more recent times, the 2016 survey by PWC suggests that there is still resistance to women inheriting the family business. A female respondent from New Zealand said in the survey that the people in her generation (third generation) see it as an inherent right to succeed as an heir in the family business. Females are not even considered
for the position. But even as we see the struggle that women have faced and are still facing to be more involved in their family run business, recent statistics by EY and Kennesaw State University in their survey Women in Leadership: The family business advantage depict that the possibility of females taking over their family-owned businesses are increasing. 41% of the female respondents stated that they have been more interested in joining the family business in the last three years. 70% of the family businesses have women CEOs in mind, and at least 30% are considering women for the next higher position. 55% of them have at least one woman on their board. While the above statistics show that more women are being considered to be a part of the family business in the last couple of
years than they have been in the past, are women all over the world encouraged to be a part of the business? EY and Kennesaw State University in their survey also illustrated that females in different countries are becoming more interested in being involved in their family businesses. India (72%), China (28%), UK (35%), US (45%), Japan (52%), Indonesia (48%) and South Korea (59%) among other countries. EY Partner, Carrie Hall said that “I think women are simply getting more opportunities to prove themselves… and once the opportunity presents itself, gender becomes less relevant in the decision process.” With growing and easier access to better education, for both men and women all over the world, people’s own beliefs are widening, and the desire for a male heir is decreasing steadily.
Smart superglue pledge swift provisional remedy for critical eye injuries & wounds from gunshot Experts have successfully created a provisional glue which could now benefit people experiencing significant eye injuries valuable time in the course of pursuing urgent surgical treatment. Created at the University of Southern California (USC), the sealant is considered to be a possible sight messiah especially for armies who suffer painful injuries to the eye by explosives. Expectedly the hydrogel could be used to avert vision retrogression in situations where complete treatment is not obtainable. The provisional solution, which changes from a liquid to almost a solid when used, is capable of efficiently blocking cuts to the eyeball. Having achieved success on its test on rabbits, the gel was injected through a syringe which was discovered to safeguard
the eyeball with no injury, infection nor other harm, this is in accordance with a Science Translational Medicine journal study. The gel contains substance usually utilised as a part of retinal implants, the visual sealant turns liquid once cooled and almost solid paste if heated. This implies that the liquid binds whenever it is in contact with body warmth, therefore it can be detached using low temperature water. Because of its framework, a unique, convenient syringe with chilling calcium ammonium nitrate crystals was created to facilitate its use in delicate circumstances. One of the leading authors of the new research paper, Niki Bayat of the USC Viterbi School, held that the first initial embodiment as an eye embed glue was not entirely apt. So a couple of adjustment had to be
made to achieve the final result. He stated that “Given the first hydrogel’s change temperature was near the temperature of the eye of a human, we needed to adjust its properties to guarantee it would frame a strong seal once the hydrogel was used for the eye, either by a soldier or a medical personnel,” “Offering such a unique, though reversible seal, the hydrogel represents a great milestone for tissue adhesives for generations to come.” Also, the hydrogel could be used someday as a treatment for wounds from gunshots. As indicated by a colleague researcher John Whalen. He said. “The hydrogel could indeed be helpful in ERs in local neighbourhoods that don’t have an eye centre with adequate facilities close at hand.”

Toys ‘R’ US JOBS AT RISK
Toys R Us uncertain future put 3200 jobs at risk. Toys R Us has been told to put £9m into its Pension protection fund by Thursday in order for the PPF to agree to the retailer’s Restructuring plan. Toys R Us confirmed earlier this month that it would close at least 28 UK stories as part of its plan to agree with the retailers restructuring plan. Failure to agree to a deal could potentially mean that 3200 people lose their jobs. The proposed plan which is a company voluntary agreement will allow the firm to reform its finances. However if the CVA does not go through then Toys R Us faces administration. A leading retail consultant Richard Hyman told the BBC: ”This is a real Catch 22 situation. “The situation could leave Toys R Us having to choose between the futures of its past or present employees. The company has reassured shoppers who are seeking last-minute presents by saying: “There will be no disruption for customers shopping through the Christmas and New Year period.”
Toys R Us fact file The toy retailer started in the US in the 1950s It reached the UK in 1985, as a subsidiary of the US chain, when it opened five stores It launched its UK website in 1996 The retailer now has 105 stores around the UK Its flagship stores are at London’s Brent Cross shopping centre and in Bristol Malcolm Weir, director of restructuring and insolvency at the PPF, said: “We continue to work closely with the trustees of the Toys R Us pension scheme and externally appointed advisors given the current CVA proposals. “The pension scheme is already underfunded and, if we were to vote in favour of the CVA, we would need to take action to ensure the position of the pension scheme was not going to further weaken.”The Toy’s R Us’s parent company in the US is in the formal bankruptcy protection proceedings. Reports suggest that it is considering closing down 26 stores within the UK.

LEADER vs BOSS WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE?
There аrе usually three grоuрѕ - thоѕе whо lеаd, those whо fоllоw аnd thоѕе whо аrе ѕimрlу рrеѕеnt. You will quickly notice thаt оnе оr twо children аrе thе ones who hаvе thе idеаѕ that оthеr сhildrеn ассерt and fоllоw. Thеѕе аrе thе lеаdеrѕ. Othеrѕ have ideas аnd оffеr ѕuggеѕtiоnѕ аnd оссаѕiоnаllу their idеаѕ аnd suggestions are hоnоrеd, uѕuаllу because thе “leaders” аllоw thеm tо bе. Thiѕ group will gеnеrаllу jоin in аll the асtivitу оf thе group аnd bесоmе the “fоllоwеrѕ.” The сhildrеn in the third group will sometimes jоin thе grоuр as a fоllоwеr and ѕоmеtimеѕ ѕit on the ѕidеlinеѕ. Whаt dо these natural young leaders hаvе thаt sets thеm apart? Generally thеу hаvе creative ideas, fоllоw thrоugh, persuasion, еnеrgу, аnd a саmаrаdеriе thаt encourages еасh member of the grоuр tо ассерt their ideas. Thеу аrеn’t аfrаid tо trу new thingѕ аnd thеу aren’t afraid or ashamed to mаkе miѕtаkеѕ, оftеn lаughing bесаuѕе they did. Thе lеаdеr ѕауѕ, “Whо wants to bе оn mу tеаm?” аnd thе fоllоwеrѕ say, “Piсk me, pick mе.” Thе оthеrѕ ѕtаnd around waiting tо be told what thеу ѕhоuld do. Thеу mау wander off аnd do thеir own thing. Thingѕ don’t сhаngе muсh аѕ wе become аdultѕ. Now аnd thеn the roles ѕwitсh when a fоllоwеr develops ѕоmе lеаdеrѕhiр skills and discovers abilities and tаlеntѕ that hаd bееn dоrmаnt. Thiѕ сhаngе mау take рlасе bесаuѕе оf education, mentoring, self-development and ѕеlf-imрrоvеmеnt or simply thе орроrtunitу tо step into a lеаdеrѕhiр position. It may emerge ѕimрlу аѕ a rеѕult оf maturity. But as adults, thingѕ gеt more complex and thе ѕtаkеѕ аrе much highеr. One thing rеmаinѕ thе ѕаmе, hоwеvеr.
21
A truе leader аttrасtѕ the fоllоwеrѕ аnd even ѕоmе оf thоѕе in thе “оut grоuр.” Thеу want tо wоrk for him, and the еmрlоуее turnover is generally lоw. Thе leader knows hоw to inѕрirе hiѕ еmрlоуееѕ tо gеt thе jоb dоnе, оn time аnd sometimes еvеn undеr budget. Hе оr ѕhе ѕеtѕ аn еxаmрlе and bringѕ оut thе bеѕt of his fоllоwеrѕ as muсh аѕ роѕѕiblе. Hе аllоwѕ them tо tаkе credit fоr the wоrk they do and givеѕ thеm hоnеѕt, but kind, сritiԛuеѕ аnd рrаiѕе. Thе mаjоr роint iѕ thаt thе lеаdеrѕ lеаd, nоt рuѕh. Whаt аbоut a bоѕѕ? Whаt does a bоѕѕ do? What iѕ a boss like? Of course, a bоѕѕ is in сhаrgе - thе dесiѕiоn maker, thе keeper оf thе kеуѕ, thе budget аnd thе рау сhесk. Thе name implies “giving оrdеrѕ аnd еxресting thеm to bе followed.” Thе ѕtеrеоtуре is thаt thе boss is рuѕhу, “bossy,” in control, and оftеn unсаring, harsh аnd орiniоnаtеd. This iѕ оf course a stereotypical dеѕсriрtiоn but, unfоrtunаtеlу it iѕ ѕоmеtimеѕ true. The bоѕѕ lets еvеrуоnе know thаt hе’ѕ the boss and expects obedience tо his оrdеrѕ аnd реrhарѕ even tо hiѕ whimѕ. He gеnеrаllу dоеѕn’t wеlсоmе idеаѕ, ѕuggеѕtiоnѕ оr сritiԛuеѕ - thаt’ѕ his job. Thе boss is comparable to the schoolyard bullу. Puѕhing аnd shoving his employees to рrоduсе аnd conform. There is generally a high turnоvеr rate in thе оffiсе оr wоrkрlасе оf the “Bоѕѕ.” Thе lеаdеr can easily be titlеd “Thе Bоѕѕ” аnd lеаd hiѕ tеаm tо success. But it is highlу unlikеlу thаt thе реrѕоn who iѕ thе bully “Bоѕѕ” will ever bе a truе lеаdеr.

With energy bills on the rise, we have come up with 5 ways to save electricity plus make your home more energy efficient.
1. Switch energy supplier: save £237 If you haven’t switched energy suppliers in
the last three years, there a good chance you could save some money. Customers who used an independent comparison site, to switch their energy supplier, saved on average £237 a year. It is a good idea to take a look at comparison sites as you could save quite a lot of money.
2. Replace light bulbs: save £180
How To Save Money On Your Shopping
With supermarket prices slowly creeping up, we have come up with
says the Money Advice Service. It’s simple but still good advice.
1Before Only buy what you need: you buy, stop and question
high prices that accompany this do not necessarily mean that a product is better than its cheaper rival. You should experiment and find products that are best. A good example is testing a product, buy one packet of branded pasta with another packet of standard pasta – and see if you can spot the difference. If you can’t, then you’re better off at your standard pasta.
5 ways on how you can save on your shopping.
yourself – do I really need this? It is estimated that 30% of all food that we buy is gone to waste. Special offers and vouchers can be used to your benefit, but they also entice you to buy the product. “Never buy something you don’t need just because it’s on offer,”
2Flashy Avoid brand premiums: packaging, brand name and the
3store:Never buy from a petrol station
Products sold at a petrol station are more expensive. You should avoid the small branches such as Tesco Express, too, for the same reason. It could end up costing you up to £30 more on a £100 shop.
4AnySwitch your supermarket: consumer that’s hoping to save a few quid in goods or services should be well used to the idea of switching – changing providers to get a better
deal. Price comparison sites such as mySupermarket looks at the prices for goods across the major supermarkets and updates the site daily with the latest prices and promotions. Users can fill their online baskets in the normal way and are then offered the option of going to the cheapest supermarket.
5LookWatch out for reduced items: for the yellow vouchers in su-
permarkets. Finding the best bargains can be a tricky game – they are not advertised and can appear on different products.
Irish ‘contradiction’
Energy-saving light bulbs can help you cut your energy bills easily. An LED light bulb costs around £1.71 to run per year. Over its lifetime, it could cut up to £180 from your energy bills, compared with an old-style bulb. Remember, energy-saving light bulbs do last longer than traditional ones: 1,000 hours - traditional light bulbs 10,000 hours - CFLs (10 years of use) 25,000 hours - LEDs LED are the most efficient types of light bulbs and use 90% less energy than traditional light bulbs. High quality LED cost £3.50 and can pay for themselves within a few months.
4. Get a new boiler: save up to £652 a
year
save you up to £320. Experts state that a lot of heat is lost through the loft so insulating your loft will save you a lot of money. Laying loft insulation to a thickness of 270mm in a typical non-insulated threebedroom semi could trim £175 a year from energy bills, as less heat will be lost through the roof. Insulating cavity walls can save around £140 a year. Solid-wall insulation, although more expensive to fit, could save you £260 in the same type of house.

If you’re replacing an appliance, you can cut your electricity bills by choosing the most energy-efficient model. For example, running costs for washing machines vary between £20 and £100 per year. Choosing the most energy-efficient models can result in annual savings of around £80 for a washing machine, £70 for a tumble dryer and £89 for a fridge-freezer. And our research shows swapping these kitchen appliances for energy-saving ones could save you up to £239 a year.

Pierre Moscovici, a leading European commission official, says there is a danger of a “contradiction” at the heart of Britain’s separation deal with the EU. He stated it would not be feasible to have an open border on the island of Ireland if Britain did not stay in a custom union. If Britain agreed to a custom union with the EU, then the UK could be barred from signing free trade agreements with other countries. Liam Foc, the international trade secretary, stated that Brexit supporters did not vote to “part leave” the EU. There have been suggestions of a
technological solution to the issue, which would be digitally tracked between Ireland and Northern Ireland. However many trade experts have played down the idea as it would not be economical. Mr Mosovici stated, “How can you have no border - no hard border and not have at the same time internal markets and custom unions?” Mr Moscovici asked. “Because goods can come through that non-border - there would be a non-border between a part of the UK and Ireland, which is a part of the EU, so you see, that would be very complex.
“It’s hard to imagine that there is no hard border, and at the same time, no internal market and no customs union, there would be a contradiction there.” Mr Moscovici wanted a “close and intimate relationship” between Britain and EU after Brexit. The solution to the Irish border issue is key in the Brexit negotiation. Theresa May stated that the Irish border would be part of the trade negotiations next year and that a deal on the issue “will be delivered.” Mr Moscovici, the commissioner for Economic Affairs, Taxation and Customs, stated that Britain would
have to follow all the rules and could not partially follow the rules. “There cannot be cherry picking - at one moment the UK will have to choose its own model of relationship with the EU,” Mr Moscovici said. “Some speak about Norway, which is part of the internal market, others about Canada - well, there is a long way between Norway and Canada, but still no cherry picking will be possible. “You cannot deal with half of the rules - you need to act by the rules.”

Socratic: App of year 2017
10 tips for start-up businesses
From Cash flow to marketing, getting a new business up and running can be a difficult task, but new entrepreneurs will benefit from these 10 start-up tips which ensure you have all the boxes ticked before you start your business. The success of the product regardless of its quality often comes down to structure, cash flow and marketing. Here are 10 tips you should pay close attention to before you plunge into your start-up.
1 Seek Help There are many issues that you will face
Socratic is the number one app of the year, named by Google. It is a tutoring app, available for free on both Google Play and the Apple App Store which is designed to help you complete your homework. It knows what’s included in a wide range of subjects, including Math’s, History, Economics, English, Chemistry and Biology, and uses AI to help you understand and work through problems. The only thing you as a user need to do is take a picture of your homework and upload it onto Socratic. Automatically the app will recognise the problem and will provide you with a step by step response on how to solve it. Google says Socratic “blew us away this year — cleverly conceived, beautifully designed, and wonderfully useful.” It further added, “Socratic captivated us with its best-in-class artificial intelligence: ask a question, and it’ll curate the info you need — like step-by-step math’s solutions — to answer it. We can’t wait to see our App of the Year get even smarter.” The company has also compiled a list of the
top five most popular new apps of the year. In the UK, they are: • FaceApp – a photography app • Mercari – Buy, Sell, New & Used - a shopping app • Selfie Camera - Beauty Camera & Photo Editor - an editing app • 5 Gold Rings UK – a quiz show app • Don’t Ask Me Ask Britain – a quiz show app The US opted for a rather different list: • Photo Editor - Beauty Camera & Photo Filters – an editing app • What the Forecast?!! – a weather app • Boomerang – a cartoons app • TopBuzz Video: Viral Videos, Funny GIFs & TV shows – a trending content app • Yarn - Chat Fiction – a short stories app Google also revealed that Nintendo’s Super Mario Run was the most downloaded new game of the year, Moana took the crown for films, Game of Thrones was the most popular TV show and Kendrick Lamar’s HUMBLE came out on top for streamed songs.

about to burst? Bitcoin could spiral out of control before a huge crash, experts have warned. Watch live Bitcoin price update amid fears of a drop in the crypto currency. Bitcoin has been one of the hottest topics over the past month, but it is a ticking time bomb. A bubble or not? Oliver Isaacs, a Crypto currency investor, believes the cash coin bubble will eventually burst with massive consequences for investors.
He said: “Personally I think Bitcoin will be the biggest bubble of our lifetime. “Bitcoin has already reached over $10,000 a coin, and it will not be long until Bitcoin valuations and prices continue to rise and spiral out of control. “Currently if you invest in Bitcoin, you can make a significant amount of money, but similar to investing in the Stock Market it is important to be cautious and prevent putting all your eggs in one basket.
“Due to the lack of Bitcoin regulation, investing in Bitcoin is a risky business, and no one knows if or when Bitcoin will crash.” However other analysts have argued that Bitcoin is not a bubble by pointing to the fact that there is a limited supply of Bitcoin. Only 21 million Bitcoins are available, basic supply and demand of economics suggest that when things are scarce, and people want those things, their value will ultimately rise. Therefore many argue that Bitcoin is
not a bubble waiting to burst but a groundbreaking advancement in accounting and money. Has Bitcoin Peaked? After Bitcoin reached over $20000 per Bitcoin, many analysts argue that Bitcoin has indeed peaked and that it was just a matter of time before the value plunged. The value of Bitcoin has dropped 25% since its peak to $15000 per coin.

Innovative public procurement are three
words that are striking a cord with West Midlands MEP Malcolm Harbour as he works on major reforms of European legislation to help Small and Medium sized Enterprises [SMEs] get their share of the many thousands of public contracts. These reforms will help resolve the ‘double whammy’ facing public authorities – tighter budgets and growing demands from an ageing population and the drive to meet sustainability targets.

Mr Harbour commented: “With public procurement accounting for over 16 per cent of EU GDP, such huge spending power needs to be more readily available to our SMEs. Small, innovative, research driven enterprises can come up with the innovative solutions to the many problems that the public sector faces. “It’s also so important for public bodies to consider more than just the bottom-line cost; factors such as the environmental footprint or end-of-life recycling costs should also be considered. Let’s face it; lowest price isn’t always the best value for money at the end of
the day.” Support for innovation in public procurement has come from the top. David Cameron has taken the lead, with 12 other Prime Ministers, in calling for an EU funding plan to support ground breaking public projects involving SMEs. The recommendations on innovative public procurement made by the influential Internal Market and Consumer Protection Committee [IMCO], which Malcolm hairs, have now being adopted in the EU Commission’s reform plans.

The Indian Maharajah’s treasures have been stolen after an audacious heist took place at the Doge’s Palace in Venice. The jewels were owned by a member of the Qatari royal family. Two thieves stole earrings and a brooch during the final day of the four-month exhibition that displayed 270 items showcasing five centuries of Indian craftsmanship. According to police, the stolen items were made of gold, platinum and diamonds. However, the jewels that were stolen were not on display during the Treasures of the Mughals and the Maharajahs exhibition. It has been estimated that the stolen jewels are worth millions of euros. Investigators said the thieves had managed to take the items from a reinforced display case after they deactivated the alarm system and then melted into the crowd and escaped. The alarm was raised several hours later at the Palazzo Ducale palace in Italy.
“We are clearly dealing here with two skilled professionals who managed to pull off their feat despite all the display rooms being fitted with technologically highly sophisticated [alarm] systems,” said the chief police commissioner, Vito Gagliardi. The Al Thani Collection contains 270 pieces of Indian and Indian-inspired jewellery and precious stones that have been around for 400 years from the Mughal period to the present. The collection was assembled by Sheikh Hamad bin Abdullah Al Thani and now belongs to Qatar’s ruling family. A spokesman for the collection, John Maxse, said it was in contact with Italian authorities and Venice’s Foundation of Civic Museums, which runs the Doge’s Palace. The foundation said the stolen brooch and earrings were “contemporary pieces and consequently are of less historical value than other items in the collection”.

Rani Mukerji draws inspiration from her schoolteachers for Hichki
Through her character, Rani Mukerji will exhibit the invaluable life lessons she learnt from teachers that shaped up her life. Wednesday 27th December 2017 – Rani Mukerji plays a schoolteacher in her upcoming film, Hichki. The actor, who is a perfectionist when it comes to getting into the skin of the character, has drawn inspiration from her real-life school teachers who impacted her life and thinking and shaped her up as a human being. A feel-good, uplifting and inspiring story, Hichki is about the positive attitude of turning one’s weakness into a strength, and taking on challenges head on. “Rani plays a common girl who has an extraordinary situation and she stares down at the challenge and never backs off when
others would mostly crumble. She plays a teacher who practices what she preaches. She tries to bring out the best in her students. Rani drew upon memories of her schooldays and the friendly, supportive atmosphere that some teachers would build for students in her school to play the part. It was very nostalgic for her as she thanks her students for shaping her up the way she has in life,” informs a source. When contacted, Rani confirms saying, “We had many inspiring teachers in my school (Maneckji Cooper, Juhu, Mumbai). Mrs. Vakil, our Geography teacher, used to teach us in such a crystal-clear manner, that we wouldn’t need to study once we went home. Mrs. Dadarkar, our History and Literature teacher was excel-
lent. She would spend time with students, and teach us Julius Caesar in a manner that brought the story alive. She made us live a story like it was happening in front of our eyes.” She adds, “Our teachers were very friendly, informal and wouldn’t heap a lot of academic pressure on us. We had toppers, students who did well, like me, and students who would barely manage passing marks. But our teachers were never harsh on those who would fail or struggle to pass. I remember growing up in a manner where we were never forced to chase high academic scores all the time. We had fun studying. This realization of mine, I have tried to reflect in Hichki through my character.” “I think the biggest lesson today (for teachers and parents), is that students should be able to express themselves freely at school. They should be able to fly. School is the only space where one can express oneself freely, for once a child grows up, pressures of building a career and earning money will automatically emerge. It’s very important to let children explore and figure out what they are good at - it could be academics, sports or the field of art. As school years are the most formative ones, it’s important for parents and teachers to let children fly at this stage. I learnt this from my teachers and I thank them for shaping me up the way I have today. This was invaluable learning for me and my character in Hichki will live this philosophy, this learning.”

Manoj Bajpayee experiments with multiple looks for Aiyaary Neeraj Pandey’s next directorial venture, Aiyaary is a film with a power-packed star cast Wednesday 27th December 2017 – Manoj Bajpayee will be seen in several avatars in his upcoming next film Aiyaary. From the film’s trailer, the actor is seen in different avatars, which have raised the curiosity levels of audience. When the title of the film was announced many of the audience did not know the meaning of the word. But the trailer of the film explains the meaning of Aiyaary briefly. Director Neeraj Pandey shares, “Aiyaary represents someone who is a master of trickery. Aiyaary is a Persian word I had come across in Devaki Nandan’s Khatri novel in which he referred to them as shape shifters and the tricks they performed as Aiyaary. Manoj’s character in the film is that of an army spy. It sum-
marises what a soldier resorts to in extreme crisis. Further, it defines our film beautifully.” The director is returning to direction two years after his last directorial M.S. Dhoni, which not only won accolades from the audience and critics but also emerged victorious at the box office. Aiyaary stars an ensemble cast of Sidharth Malhotra, Manoj Bajpayee, Pooja Chopra, Rakulpreet, Anupam Kher and Naseeruddin Shah and releases in cinemas on 26th January 2018.

Anushka Sharma and Virat Kohli tie the knot In December, 2017, acclaimed actress and producer Anushka Sharma tied the knot with her boyfriend of four years, the captain of the Indian cricket team, Virat Kohli. It was a Tuscan wedding for the couple at the luxury heritage hotel Borgo Finocchieto, Tuscany, Italy. The wedding was kept a private affair attended only by family members and close friends of the couple. The couple’s attire for their special day was put together by Courtier Sabyasachi Mukherjee. The bride wore a pale pink lehenga of the Renaissance style, adorned with vintage english colours, an embellishment of silver and gold metal threads. The jewellery was an elaborate ensemble of Japanese cultured pearls, uncut diamonds, and a spinel matching the lehenga. The groom on the other hand wore an ivory raw silk sherwani in a banarasi pattern and a Kota Safa matching the bride’s lehenga. Tiger Zinda Hai, the action mega entertainer from Yash Raj Films, has wowed everyone first with its record smashing trailer and then its blockbuster love song, Dil Diyan Gallan. If you haven’t seen it yet, the song features the two superstars in their most romantic song to date. And the highlight of the song is Salman painting a portrait of Katrina on ice. Talk about freezing a moment in time. Director Ali Abbas Zafar sums it up as, “It is a romantic track that captures the beauty of a mature love story. We have filmed Dil Diyan Gallan in an old school, vintage way to bring alive the romance that two mature people share. It is like a classic Yash Chopra song.” Just like filming for action sequences on this remote Austrian mountainside had its challenges, shooting this ballad didn’t come easy either. Ali adds,
“Salman and Katrina shot this song on some very difficult terrain in the Alps. The biggest highlight in this song is the unique Katrina portrait that he has drawn on a frozen lake. We had to shoot on this lake and Salman converted it to a canvas. We had to source natural colors, as ice doesn’t catch all kinds of paints, which didn’t come easy. But once we got hold of this, he created a huge 20 feet by 20 feet portrait that features Katrina’s face. It’s a sight for sore eyes, this painting, and it makes Dil Diyan Gallan a truly unique romantic song visually.” Salman and Katrina’s scorching chemistry has become the talk of the town. Their onscreen romance makes Tiger Zinda Hai even more anticipated. The high-octane action thriller is set to release in cinemas on Friday 22nd December 2017.

Shaadi Squad were the appointed wedding planners. The ceremonies ranged from a mehendi function to the engagement party. The decor throughout was kept to a minimum and whispered elegance. A few hours after their wedding, Anushka Sharma and Virat Kohli took to twitter to announce their wedding. The message read, “Today we have promised each other to be bound in love forever. We are truly blessed to share the news with you. This beautiful day will be made more special with the love and support of our family of fans & well wishers. Thank you for being such an important part of our journey.” Following the wedding, a reception was hosted for relatives on December 21 in Delhi at Durbar Hall in the Taj Diplomatic Enclave and another for industry friends and cricketers in Mumbai on December 26.

Akshay Kumar’s upcoming film PadMan introducing his onscreen wife Radhika Apte
Padmavati Controversy Comes To An End
Padmavati, the historical drama by acclaimed Indian director and writer Sanjay Leela Bhansali, and starring Shahid Kapoor, Deepika Padukone and Ranveer Singh has tackled numerous controversies. However, the controversies seem to have settled down. Rumours suggest that the Central Board for Film Certification (CBFC) will pass the film certificate. Padmavati will be released in 2018. The major controversy regarding the film was whether the historical drama was a work of fiction. There were accusations that the film distorted historical facts and that in turn, might hurt the sentiments of certain groups. Reports suggest that the film may release on or before 12 February 2018.
PadMan is the world’s first feature film on menstrual hygiene based on the story of TIME Magazine’s 100 Most Influential entrants Arunachalam Muruganantham, a rural welder from India turned incredible innovator and inventor, who was moved to provide women with access to high-quality and affordable sanitary pads 20 years ago.

‘Akshay Kumar was not my first choice’
Twinkle Khanna, co-produced the movie Padman and it was revealed that Akshay Kumar was not her first choice to play the role of Arunachalam Muruganantham. Khanna had first decided that the role should be played by someone in the industry who was well respected by the audience which would make it easier to convey the message to the viewers. She said that initially she had some other actors in mind but was convinced when R. Balki, the director of the film suggested that Akshay Kumar should take on the part. The story of Padman revolves around Arunachalam Muruganantham who revolutionised the concept of menstrual hygiene by inventing the low-cost sanitary napkin machine. Khanna also said that she approached Balki for directing the film because she admires the fact that he gives voice to female characters in his films. She said, “Once I came across the story of Muruganantham, I felt it has to reach across states, borders, religions...and there are only two things that work in this country - cricket and cinema.” The film which is set to release on 26 January 2018 also stars Sonam Kapoor and Radhika Apte in important roles.

Meghan kept her look simple but flawless with a rose coloured blush and a some black eyeliner. Her lashes were very subtle and allowed her eyes to really pop. These are acne scars treatment methods that you can use to treat your acne scars right at the convenience of your home. Natural acne scar treatment is the best solution method especially for those who possess a sensitive skin because natural treatment doesn’t create side effects or rashes that may further destroy your sensitive skin. 1. One of the leading methods of clearing acne scars is the use of oatmeal cleanser. It helps eliminate other skin defect like blackheads and also help in the effective removal of acne scars. The oatmeal method consists of a mixture of rose water and an oatmeal powder; together they will form a paste that you can apply over the areas of your skin affected by the acne scars. After applying it allow for about fifteen minutes to pass then afterwards rinse it with cold water, this process allows the oatmeal to close all existing skin pores and helps clear up a lot of your existing acne scars. The most important thing to remember when dealing with acne scars is that you should be patient with one kind of treatment and use it until the remnants of acne scars are completely taken care of. 4. Other well known acne scar treatment is the use of the process called laser resurfacing. It’s a process that involves a laser being applied to the affected skin and with that it will kill the bacteria that forms the acne scars. This can take from a number of minutes until an hour or so and usually takes between 2 to 10 days before the skin to heal completely. Remember there are now a lot of ways to clear acne scars. THE 40 WINKS

WORKOUT
To look cut, with great muscle definition, many people have the misconception that you need to hit the gym. That’s the general belief: lift less weight and do more reps for definition. For bulk, lift heavier weight and do fewer reps. The idea that less weight tones muscles is wrong. Less weight and more reps builds endurance. For explosive power, do fewer reps with heavier weight. Just remember that to really increase strength the general consensus is that you have to work with at least 60% of your maximum lift (the heaviest
weight at which you can complete a single repetition). Definition is not an issue when deciding how many reps to do and how much weight to lift. In reality, there is no such thing as lifting for definition. Muscular definition is one thing: muscle mass minus body fat. You cannot lift to make your muscles more defined. To look ripped, you have to shed some fat. It starts with your diet. You have to eat right. There are many ways to eat right. One thing that works well for almost everyone is to cut out milk and
milk by-products (creamers for coffee) from the diet. Also, don’t eat any complex carbohydrates after lunch. A perfect dinner might be salad and tuna fish. In addition to lifting weights, do cardio often. Many people are afraid that they will lose muscle by doing cardio. In reality, doing cardio (in addition to eating well) is the only way to get cut because you have to lose that body fat. The more cut you are, the more jacked you look. In conclusion, lift weights, eat well, do cardio, and look ripped.
David Lloyd Clubs becomes first UK fitness brand to offer group napping classes, which are scientifically designed to reinvigorate the mind, improve moods and even burn the odd calorie Napercise’ arrives in the wake of research revealing the ‘tiredness epidemic’ across the UK, with 86% of parents admitting to suffer from fatigue, with 26% regularly getting less than 5 hours sleep a night With 19% of tired parents admitting to having had a kip work, 11% having found themselves drifting off while driving, and 5% having forgotten to pick up their child from school due to their tiredness, it’s clear the class is needed The frantic, stress-inducing nature of modern life means that few of us seem to get enough sleep, and if you’re a parent, regularly getting your full 40 winks becomes even more of a luxury. With this in mind, family fitness brand David Lloyd Clubs is launching ‘Napercise’ – a new type of wellbeing class for exhausted parents that consists of nothing but climbing into a bed and having a sleep. Being trialled for the first time this weekend, the Napercise classes consist of 45-minute sleep sessions that are designed to help reinvigorate the mind, body, and even burn the odd calorie. Upon arrival in the studio guests will find the spin-bikes
swapped for single beds, and upbeat workout tunes ditched in favour of atmospheric sounds, to create the perfect environment for the soporific sessions to take place. The studio temperature will also be dropped to a level that promotes calorie burning during sleep. Napercisers will be invited to curl up in one of the beds and indulge in some restorative mid-afternoon shuteye, before continuing on with their day. The development of Napercise is inspired by past academic studies into the important health benefits that napping in the day can bring1. This includes helping boost alertness, alleviate feelings of anxiety or stress, and improving your mood. Napercise itself has been developed alongside Dreams Sleep Expert Kathryn Pinkham. Pinkham commented: Sleep is a lot more important than people realise. We tend to focus on the shortterm effects such as being tired or lacking concentration, but it is also essential for our long-term physical and mental wellbeing too. In addition to a lack of sleep bringing with it a higher risk of developing anxiety or depression, when we are sleep deprived we lack the energy to exercise regularly, and also the mental clarity to make good decisions about the food we eat, which could negatively impact our physical health in the long-run.”

SUFFERERS OF BOTH TYPE 2 DIABETES AND SLEEP APNOEA COULD LOSE EYESIGHT WITHIN FOUR YEARS Research led by the University of Birmingham has discovered that patients who suffer from both Type 2 diabetes and obstructive sleep apnoea are at greater risk of developing a condition that leads to blindness within an average period of less than four years. Obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) is a condition where the walls of the throat relax and narrow during sleep, resulting in snoring and interrupting breathing, and it is common in patients with Type 2 diabetes. Meanwhile, diabetic retinopathy -the most common form of diabetic eye disease – affects between 40 and 50 per cent of patients with diabetes and is a leading cause of blindness in the Western world. Previous studies have shown a link between OSA and diabetic retinopathy. However, prior to this research led by the University of Birmingham, published in American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine, there had been no published studies assessing the impact of OSA on the progression of diabetic retinopathy in patients with Type 2 diabetes. Corresponding Author Doctor Abd Tahrani, of the University of Birmingham’s Institute of Metabolism and Systems Research, said: “Despite improvements in glucose, blood pressure and lipid levels, diabetic retinopathy remains very common. “Meanwhile, OSA has been shown to be very common in patients with Type 2 diabetes, which is not surprising considering that excess weight contributes to the development of both of these conditions. “However, most patients who have OSA are not aware that they have the condition and the disease could go undiagnosed for years. “Our study is the first to prospectively examine the impact of OSA on diabetic retinopathy. “Firstly, we showed that sight-threatening diabetic retinopathy was more common in patients with both Type 2 diabetes and OSA compared to those with Type 2 diabetes but without OSA. “However, more importantly, we have shown that patients with OSA and Type 2 diabetes, compared to those with diabetes only, are at increased risk of developing advanced diabetic retinopathy
over a period of three years and seven months.” The study was carried out at two diabetes clinics at hospitals in the Midlands and involved 230 patients with Type 2 diabetes. The study excluded any patients who were already known to have OSA or any kind of respiratory condition. The patients were assessed for diabetic retinopathy using specialist retinal imaging, while OSA was assessed using a home-based, multi-channel cardio-respiratory portable device. The results showed that diabetic retinopathy prevalence was higher in patients with
OSA (42.9%) compared to those without OSA (24.1%). The longitudinal study found that at
a follow-up appointment, on average 43 months later, the patients with OSA (18.4%) were more likely to develop moderate to severe diabetic retinopathy compared to those without OSA (6.1%). Meanwhile, the study also showed that patients who received treatment for OSA using a machine connected to a face mask that delivers pressure to prevent the blockage of the airways during sleep had a lower risk of developing advanced diabetic retinopathy compared to patients who did not receive the treatment. Dr Tahrani added: “We can conclude from this study that OSA is an independent predictor for the progression to moderate or severe diabetic retinopathy in patients with Type 2 diabetes. “Our findings are important because improved understanding of the pathogenesis of diabetic retinopathy is important in order to identify new treatments. “Following our research, it is important that clinicians treating patients with Type 2 diabetes are aware that their patients who also have OSA are particularly at increased risk of developing advance retinopathy and, hence, appropriate preventative measures should be put in place.”

Green tea was originally grown in China, but now is grown in other places as well. It can be used either as a drink or an extract. The claims about what makes green tea effective are that it contains polyphones and flavonoids. The percentage of flavonoids in green tea is higher than can be found in most vegetables, fruits, or wine, all of which have fairly large amounts. Flavonoids in particular are what gives green tea antioxidant and ant carcinogenic qualities. Green tea also contains vitamins A, E, and C, as well as zinc, selenium, chromium and manganese. It is packed full of things that are recommended to improve the overall quality of your health, and possibly the
quality of your hair. It is packed full of things that are recommended to improve the overall quality of your health, and possibly the quality of your hair.
Shortage of CPR skills and awareness in the West Midlands are putting lives at risk, BHF warns. Just 36% of people in the West Midlands would be confident in performing immediate CPR if someone collapsed in front of them, warns the British Heart Foundation (BHF). Performing immediate CPR can in some cases double a person’s chance of survival, but with less than half (41%) of people in the West Midlands trained in CPR, there is a shortage of skills and awareness that is putting lives at risk. The BHF says that people are reluctant to perform CPR because they are unsure whether a person has experienced a cardiac arrest, they lack training and confidence, and they fear to cause more harm than good. A survey of people in the West Midlands found: 63% of people would be worried about knowing what to do if someone collapsed from a cardiac arrest in front of them, 56% of these people said that they would worry about making things worse by trying to help 42% admitted they would feel helpless. Only 23% of people could correctly identify the signs2 of cardiac arrest Research funded by the charity has found that bystanders who witness a cardiac

Many people who have used green tea to reverse their hair loss problems attribute the effects to the high levels of antioxidants. To improve survival rates and train more people in CPR, the BHF launched its ‘Mission CPR’ campaign that saw thousands of schoolchildren learn CPR. ‘Mission CPR’ is part of the BHF’s Nation of Lifesavers campaign which aims to equip all young people and adults with the CPR skills to save a life. Since its launch, more than 1,300 schools across the UK have been given free CPR training kits by the BHF to teach young people how to save a life. Simon Gillespie, Chief Executive of the British Heart Foundation, said: “It is worrying that so few people in the West Midlands would feel confident to perform CPR if someone collapsed with a cardiac arrest in front of them. “When someone has a cardiac arrest, every second counts, and immediate CPR can double their chance of survival in some cases. “Thousands of people still lack these skills, and we know that many more lives in the West Midlands could be saved if more people felt confident and able to intervene. We need as many people as possible to learn CPR and become a potential life saver.

I thought it was because she was overweight and unfit.” “My brother and I encouraged her to see her doctor. I am so glad that she did. She received treatment and is doing very well.” “In the Asian community we are lucky to have such close-knit families that we can spot the warning signs and make sure action is taken without delay. So if you notice your loved one is getting out of breath doing things they used to be able to do, encourage them to see their doctor.” Dr Shafick Gareeboo, Respiratory Consultant, Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Lewisham and Greenwich NHS Trust, who treated Mr Raval, comments “Breathlessness and a persistent cough are symptoms that can be easily ignored, put down to getting older, or seen as just minor health issues. But these symptoms can be warning signs and it is really important to get them checked out by a doctor. If anyone has concerns, I would encourage them to seek medical advice, as getting help early rather than waiting until the problem gets worse is vital. Early diagnosis saves lives and can improve quality of life for people with long term conditions, so if you find yourself getting out of breath doing things you used to be able to do, or if you have a cough that has lasted for three weeks or more, tell your doctor.”
DO HOBBIES RELIEVE STRESS Despite advances in technology or perhaps maybe because of them, many in the world today suffer from stress and stress-related illnesses. There is so much noise, information and distraction coming from every direction. Now more than ever it is important to find a way to relieve some of this stress. However, there is wonderful news! There are tons of ways to relieve stress. Do you wonder “do hobbies relieve stress?” If you do, I have an answer for you. Though hobbies as a form of stress relief is nothing new, it is important to choose a hobby that is right for you. Before you find the right hobby, you should think about the following things first:
1. An effective hobby will allow you to escape from responsibilities and
obligations that we all have in our lives. Choosing a hobby that adds to your stress is not going to be very effective. As an example, many consider golf to be a hobby. If you are the competitive type, you may not be happy unless you are golfing like a pro and this could very well increase your stress level. Another thought is to stay away from any hobbies that will strain your budget. If you are not able to pay for your hobby, it may not help you relieve stress and even have the opposite effect.
2. The finished product is what gives many hobbyists satisfaction. As an
example, a gardener can show off their prized rose bush or huge pumpkin, a carpenter could admire a new table. A hobby that will provide a finished product as a result of relaxation will pay off because you can admire the results of your stress relief. Some of the biggest stress relieving hobbies would be woodworking or gardening because you will have a finished product to enjoy.
3. Many will find stress relief from simply stepping outside of the norm.
They will learn a second language or learn to sew as a means of relaxation, and they may not do those things every day of their lives. When you make yourself a better person you enrich your life which will allow you to have a different perspective should problems arise and will allow them to eliminate unneeded stress. Sometimes we just need to get over ourselves to relieve stress. So in answer to the question, “do hobbies relieve stress?” yes they do in a way. Some hobbies can be more relaxing than others. It is just a matter of finding the right hobby that will work for you and relieve your stress.

CALLING DR INTERNET: A UK health charity has expressed deep concern following new data which reveals the alarming use of online self-diagnosis. The British Dental Health Foundation believes an over-reliance on websites, particularly online symptom checkers, could lead to delays in the diagnosis and treatment of life threatening diseases such as mouth cancer. Four in ten people1 questioned by the charity say they prefer turning to the internet to investigate their symptoms, while less than one in three (31 per cent) would see their doctor or dentist first. Dr Nigel Carter OBE, Chief Executive of the British Dental Health Foundation, said: “The internet can undoubtedly be a fantastic source for information but it would be highly ill-advised to place too much reliance on what we read online. Incorrect advice, biased agendas, invalid sources and our own mis-interpretation regarding what we read and search for could lead to potentially dangerous results. “I went on a well-known online diagnostic website today and searched for ‘white patches in the mouth’, one of the major symptoms of mouth cancer. The only diagnosis it suggested was for thrush. “White patches in the mouth, alongside red patches, non-healing mouth ulcers and unusual lumps in the head and neck area are the
main signs of mouth cancer, as well as having many other causes the least of which is thrush. Being given a misdiagnosis of these online may lead to a delay in visiting the dentist and receiving timely treatment. “With mouth cancer, early diagnosis is vital as it can dramatically improve the chances of survival from 50 to 90 per cent. “November is Mouth Cancer Action Month and throughout the month we are asking you to be aware to any of these symptoms and to be alert for any changes in your mouth. Instead of consulting Dr Google, ensure that you visit your dentist or doctor as soon as possible if you notice anything out of the ordinary.“ Mouth Cancer Action Month, organised by the British Dental Health Foundation and sponsored by Denplan, is aiming to raise awareness of the signs and symptoms of mouth cancer in order to get more cases caught early enough to make a difference to the chances of survival. Statistics show that mouth cancer rates are seeing a rapid increase, with more than 7,300 Brits now being diagnosed with the disease each year. Mouth cancer also claims far more lives than cervical and testicular cancer combined and some of this can be attributed to late diagnoses. In the study, which aimed to analyse the UK’s knowledge and
attitudes towards mouth cancer, the charity found that while the internet was the most used source for diagnosis, it was also the least trusted. Less than one in four of us indicated that we always trust what we read on the internet while the survey found that health professionals such as doctors and dentists came on top of those who we trust. (30 per cent.) Dr Carter added: “It is encouraging to see that there is an excellent relationship that clearly exists between ourselves and health professionals. “While the internet is a great source of information nothing can beat the tried and tested way of seeing a professional when it comes to our health. “It is so important to keep to regular dental check-ups and a strong level of trust between the patient and the dentist means that this is more likely to be maintained. “A dentist can not only ensure our teeth and gums remain healthy but they also visually examine us for signs of mouth cancer – something we certainly cannot get at from logging in at home.” To learn more about Mouth Cancer Action Month and find out how ‘mouthaware’ you really are, please visit

BINGE EATING
AW

DISORDER-MORE COMMON THAN YOU THINK It is often common for individuals to overeat on certain occasions, such as a special meal or during the holidays. But what you ate every meal in this fashion? That’s what occurs for those who suffer from a binge eating disorder. To them, no special requirement is necessary in order to consume large quantities of food.
Approximately 2 million people from differing backgrounds have this condition. It does not single out certain groups according to ethnicity or age. In fact, an alarming fact is that it can even be found in children. People with this type of affliction are often overweight, if not obese, although it is not a necessity in order to have the condition. They find it necessary to consume massive quantities of food at every sitting, even though they are not hungry. When a person begins to eat, it takes the stomach approximately 20 minutes to register what has been eaten and to notify the brain that it is full. That’s why the recommendation is to wait this period of time between helpings to give the body
time to signal that no more food is necessary. But in these extreme cases, there is no cut off, nor does the brain intervene. The individual is so adept to continuing in their eating that they pay no attention to the body or the brain as a way of stopping. And not only do they consume large quantities of food, but they do so very quickly, which further complicates the matter. Many times, others may think that these individuals do not care or that they might even wish to be overweight, but that is simply not the case. In fact, research has shown that those who suffer from this condition do so because of a loss of control, which is why the condition has also been known as compulsive eating. The compulsion to continue eating is there, but not the will to stop. There is any number of triggers that can set off one of these eating sessions. It can be anything ranging from guilt, to fear, anger, resentment, depression or even stress. When one of these times occurs, the binger is looking for solace in the food, even though they typically feel guilty and upset while they are doing it. The treatment for a binge eating disorder is medication, psychotherapy, or even a carefully designed combination of both. Regardless of the course of treatment, the main goal is to determine what the triggering mechanisms are and to learn to effectively deal with them without the use of food.

CAPTIVATING CRETE Legendary birthplace of the Greek
God Zeus. For a relaxing holiday, with the option to explore Crete’s fascinating history, a 5 star luxury stay at Aldemar Resorts’ Knossos Royal, and the adjacent award winning Royal Mare Thalasso and Spa Centre, ticks all the right boxes…
Introduction:
The history of Crete stretches back thousands of years. It was home to Europe’s first civilisation, the Minoans, from around 3000 years B.C. to 1100 years B.C., during which time they built extravagant palaces. The remains of these buildings are now major tourist attractions with the Palace of Knossos being Crete’s biggest crowd puller. Other highlights on a holiday to Crete include the newly refurbished Heraklion Museum, the Gorge of Samaria, a natural wonder that is a must for nature lovers and walkers, and for beach lovers there’s the famous Vai beach with palm trees, the uncrowded Xerokambos beach or the Matala beach with its artificial caves. With its long hot summers the island of Crete is bathed in sunshine from April to late October with hardly any rainfall during the peak months of June, July and August. If you are looking for a relaxing break with the option to explore Crete ’s fascinating history then Aldemar Hotels offer exclusive holidays that cater for your every need.
Getting There:
Aldemar Resorts have three luxury, 5 star hotels situated in Hersonissos approximately 25 km east along the coast from the capital Heraklion. Just over 4 hours flying time from the U.K., there are a number of airlines offering daily direct flights. Jet2.com provide regular low cost flights to Crete and it would be well worthwhile checking their website for details.
Hotel Facilities:
The Aldemar Royal Mare, Royal Villas and Aldemar Knossos Royal are
situated very close to one another. My week’s stay was at the Knossos Royal. This is a stunning and stylish hotel with the whole complex laid out to sweep to the sandy beach with breathtaking views out over the turquoise-blue waters of the Cretan Sea. From the hotel reception and main restaurant the hotel grounds are beautifully designed as a mix of two storey villas between exotic, well kept gardens. As you would expect from a hotel of this calibre, there’s an excellent choice of restaurants and bars and the standard of service was impeccable. I had a number of wonderfully prepared meals at the Artemis and Fontana Amorosa restaurants. This hotel has 346 rooms consisting of double rooms and very generous family rooms suitable for two to four persons, so this is an all round hotel equally at home for couples and families; with children being particularly well catered for. There are two central outdoor pools, one with a 45 metre waterslide, great fun for the young and not so young! In addition there are a number of private pools for the exclusive use of guests staying in Royal Villas by the sea. There were plenty of comfortable beds and shade – a perfect setting for relaxing days in the sun. All guest rooms are furnished to an outstandingly high standard and the facilities for children are excellent. Children have the option of eating in their own restaurant with specially tailored menus, there are children’s playgrounds, mini-clubs and a super early evening disco near the main bar where the kids were having a great time every evening before heading off to bed tired and happy.
Sport & Activities:
In addition to the usual sports facilities such as table-tennis, mini golf, keep fit, etc, there is a dedicated water sports centre near the private beach offering a range of water sports such as canoeing, diving, windsurfing, water skiing, and banana rides. The clay court Tennis Academy is situated in the grounds of the adjacent Royal Mare and has seven
international standard clay courts and a practice court with training wall. Bookings are easily made at reception or even on-line before you go! Aldemar have added a Golf Academy and the Crete Golf Club (www.crete-golf. com), just 7 kms from the hotel. Entertainment is laid on both during the day and the evening arranged by the lively and hard working animation team, either in the hotel complex or in the open air amphitheatre.

Pakistan, The Number One Travel Destination!
The British Backpacker Society have
declared that Pakistan is the worlds leading adventure travel destination. The Backpacker Society announced the results after counting down the top 20 adventure travel countries throughout the course of the year. Samuel Joynson, a member of the British Backpacker Society, visited Pakistan with his colleague Adam Sloper, and said that although they have visited over 100 countries worldwide, Pakistan was a ‘clear winner.’ The British Backpacker Society described Pakistan as ‘one of the friendliest countries on earth, with mountain scenery that is beyond anyone’s wildest imagination’. Samuel Joynson, 26, and Adam Sloper, 25, visited Pakistan in the summer of 2016, crossing the Indian-Pakistani border at Wagah before spending a few days in Lahore, Rawalpindi and Islamabad. From Islamabad, they travelled overland through the Kaghan valley to Naran, before heading over Babusar Top to Gilgit. They finished their journey by heading to the idyllic Hunza Valley, where they climbed to the top of the Hon Pass (4257m) from Karimabad. Samuel said that “I have never experienced this more than during my two weeks in Pakistan”. He also stated that “Travel in Pakistan is an experience that just keeps surprising. Whether it is gazing at the astonishing peaks of the Karakoram, dining in the delicious back-street restaurants of Rawalpindi, or finding a new group of friends on a long-distance bus journey, it
is a country that offers tourists a new intrigue at every corner. I have no doubt that as the story of Pakistan’s wonders spreads to travellers around the world, the country will enjoy a true renaissance of international tourism and adventurous travellers will soon be filling the markets of Lahore and the hiking shops of Hunza. I wish the Pakistani tourism industry all the best on this journey, and hope that the British Backpacker Society can assist
Thalasso and Spa Resort:
The Royal Mare award winning Thalasso is listed among the 10 best Thalasso Centres in the world and I could easily see why. An extensive range of treatments for men and women dedicated entirely to well-being were on offer, including wellness, new energy, body lipo control, silhouette slimming, vertebral, vein tone and harmonia. The Royal Massage was an experience which totally relaxed and unstressed my body. The Thalasso Centre is a luxurious 4000 square metre environment with first class treatment rooms, swimming pools, beauty and fitness facilities and knowledgeable, helpful staff. The building just oozes luxury and relaxation.
Conclusion:
I went looking for a super hotel, at a great price with excellent facilities, access to a world class spa and wonderful dining options. I wasn’t disappointed, I found all this and more at the Aldemar Knossos Royal in Crete. For more information have a look at the fact box below

Pakistan in this endeavour wherever possible!” Adam Sloper added: “The only real concern for tourists in Pakistan is the number of selfies that they will be asked to be in. I would advise all prospective visitors to prepare to smile for the camera, and get ready to enjoy some of the best hospitality on earth.” The British Backpacker Society has ranked the top 20 adventure travel destinations: Pakistan, Russia,
India, Turkey, Kyrgyzstan, Lebanon, Tajikistan, China, Georgia, Uganda, Bosnia & Herzegovina, Jordan, Iraq, Democratic Republic of Congo, Algeria, Montenegro, Egypt, Rwanda, Uzbekistan and Kosovo. The British Backpacker Society have said that they will be returning to Pakistan in 2018 to travel to Skardu and the base camp of K2.

3 Instagram Strategies for Marketing in 2018
In case you hadn’t noticed, for the past few years, Instagram is fast becoming the social network brands and entrepreneurs are turning to in order to connect with their target audience. Instagram’s user numbers have grown at a phenomenally rapid pace over the last few years. The social media platform currently has more than 500 million daily active users. There are two reasons that make Instagram a great marketing tool that you cannot afford to ignore. First, it shouldn’t be understated, that the average consumer is active on Instagram daily. It’s where the eyeballs are on and attention can be found. Second, Instagram uses Facebook’s advertising features, giving brands the most extensive targeting options available. Advertisers are clamouring to the platform with an increase in user activity, requiring brands to use intelligent strategies in order to take their Instagram marketing to the next level. Here are some of the best strategies for the upcoming year. Use the ‘Stories’ Feature to Tell Your Brand’s Story In an effort to grab a share of Snapchat’s audience, last year Instagram introduced their own Stories feature to that allows users to share videos and images that disappear after 24 hours. “The Stories feature is a great way for brands to leverage FOMO -- fear of missing out. Since the content disappears after 24 hours, your following needs to view your ‘Story’ on a regular basis. You can use this constant attention to showcase company culture, provide educational information or push special offers. The attention you can command here is the true value,” says Brian Gwinn, CEO of Greenview Investment Partners. In April, Stories became more popular than Snapchat, and there is no sign of it slowing down. If your Instagram account is verified, you also have the ability to add a link, which the user is taken to when they ‘swipe up’ on your story. Dive Head First into Your Comments
and Start Engaging Too many brands spend most of their time creating great content, and then they simply ignore it once it’s been posted. Excellent content will receive a lot of likes and comments, and that engagement can help your posts receive organic exposure, resulting in even more comments. It’s very important that you spend time “in” each post, commenting back, which creates loyal brand supporters. When you reply to a comment, even just a simple ‘Thank you,’ you are showing the person that you value them and their opinion. This creates a loyal supporter of your company or organisation, whether you are a retailer, manufacturer or a service provider.” You don’t have to be glued to Instragram to view your comments, as that would be counterproductive. Just spending five minutes replying to your newest posts a couple times a day will suffice. When you reply to someone they will receive a notification, so delayed replies can still be effective Post More Video Content Increasing popularity of video-based content has been a result of two main contributing factors. It’s highly effective and it’s no longer costly to produce within reach of everyone’s budget. Today’s smartphones are equipped with cameras that produce HD 4K video quality that is comparable to high-end video equipment. Having the ability to produce HD quality video on demand and on the go is very convenient, especially for those that want to use a personal brand to market their business. “Posting video content allows you to create a very personal message and deliver it in a way that outperforms an image and text-based post. Consumers want to connect with a person — not a faceless company. Video content allows you to make the human connection,” suggests Fred Dahr of the Law Offices of Fred Dahr.

WeAreTechWomen unveil next generation of female tech talent with TechWomen50 Awards winners WeAreTechWomen is proud to announce the winners of the
2017 TechWomen50 Awards. The winners of these awards showcases remarkable women within the technology sector covering a wide range of roles such as software engineers, Java developers, security engineers, students and college lecturers. The winners also include individuals from leading firms such as SONY, IBM, BAE Systems, O2, Mastercard, Barclays and Amazon. Alongside the individual TechWomen50 category, we are also pleased to announce the winners of the TechWomen50 Champions, Company of the Year and Network of the Year. Recent statistics have revealed just how much more there is to do to encourage women into the UK technology sector. Currently, only 17 per cent of employees in the UK technology sector are women; only one in six school leavers starting a degree in computer science in 2016 was female and the total number of girls taking either ICT or computer science at GCSE fell by 12 per cent in the same year. Since September 2017, WeAreTechWomen has been searching the UK for the best female tech talent in the country. The TechWomen50 awards are the first of their kind to focus solely on the female tech talent pipeline and to also recognise the impact of champions, companies and networks that are leading the way for the future generations of tech talent. In its inaugural year, the awards were entered by over 500 nominations from across the UK and Northern Ireland and judged by a panel of 20 industry experts. Over 15,000 public votes of support were received for the 100 shortlisted nominees. Speaking about the awards, Mark Kimber, Chief Information
Officer, Worldpay said, “I have been working in technology for more than 20 years and I am pleased to say we have come a long way in building an inclusive working environment for women and men. I know we can do more and that’s why the WeAreTechWomen 50 awards is important.” “They showcase great technologists working across our industry who are making a difference, building an environment for the future and shaping the way we build our tech community.” Kayleigh Bateman, Head of WeAreTechWomen, added: “Over the course of my career, I have seen some truly talented and inspirational women who have been recognised by a multitude of awards. However, there is not one awards series that focuses on the next generation of female talent as a whole, or those who support these individuals.” “Our hope is that by recognising not just our shortlist of 100, but also those that champion women in tech too, we can encourage more organisations to follow their lead.” The TechWomen50 Awards were kindly supported by Worldpay, SAP, Verizon, Amazon, Barclays, Bloomberg, Capgemini, Deloitte, EY, Oliver Wyman, PwC, Santander and is partnered by IT Pro, Streets Consulting and Kaleidoscope. We would personally like to thank our judges who all gave up their valuable time to assemble our winners and to help WeAreTechWomen recognise the fantastic achievement of all of our amazing nominees. Once again, we would like to congratulate all our winners and extend a sincere thanks to everyone who supported the TechWomen50 Awards during 2017. Winners’ will shortly receive an invitation to an awards ceremony to be hosted in February – details to follow.
Apple reveals it’s secret IPhone users shocked after Apple reveals its secret Apple recently confirmed the already existing suspicions by iPhone users that it has been deliberately slowing down the performance of iPhone as they grow older. They reasoned this move by saying that as a battery’s life diminishes over time, by slowing down the performance of the iPhone through its various iOS updates, it has tried to prolong the life of a customer’s device. The company said that in cold conditions the lithium-ion batteries are less capable of supplying the peak current demands, so when a device has a low battery charge or has aged over time, it will shut down in order to protect its electronic components. When the charging and the discharging cycle occurs, the lithium

ions degrade. This is because during the process the ions migrate through the material to form the battery. The more the ions migrate, the more is the degradation. In other words, the more the charge is transferred, the more the erosion of the material and lesser the battery life. Customers, technology consultants and bloggers have had a varied response to what Apple has done without informing them. Some feel that Apple should have informed its users and given them an option before slowing down their devices. There is a lot of mistrust growing among users by the secret Apple has held from them for so long. Others feel that it is an understandable situation as in the end it does help mitigate the problem of diminishing batteries.
About the TechWomen50 Awards
I
t is no secret that the technology industry lacks female representation at all levels. However, many Women in Technology awards choose to focus on inspirational women that have already achieved seniority, in roles such Director, CIO or CTO. Whilst we feel it is extremely necessary to highlight successful and influential women, we also believe the pipeline of female technologists need a platform to shine too. We hope that by highlighting the accolades of up-andcoming inspirational female tech talent, we can help to create a new generation of female role models for the industry. Through the awards, we would also like to recognise a number of senior individuals who are championing up-and-coming women, as well as any organisations that have designed and implemented successful initiatives and programmes in order to attract, retain and develop the female tech talent. Finally, we applaud the often-voluntary efforts of the women in tech networks that operate across the UK, and again would like to formerly recognise these within our awards. The TechWomen50 awards are the first of their kind to focus solely on the female tech talent pipeline and recognise the impact of champions, companies and networks that are leading the way.

MERCEDES-BENZ E-CLASS NAMED PROFESSIONAL DRIVER’S ‘ CAR OF THE YEAR’
T
he Mercedes-Benz E 220 d AMG Line has been revealed as the 2017 Professional Driver Car of the Year. The E-Class won the ‘Executive Car of the Year’ category, while the V 250 d Extra Long won ‘MPV of the Year’. The E-Class was commended thanks to its innovative technology and interior comfort. The V-Class won its category thanks to being “especially practical” and “offering excellent rear seat comfort for five and ample luggage space for everyone’s bags”. Mark Bursa, editor of Professional Driver Magazine, said: “The new E220d is such a versatile vehicle. It’s roomy and comfortable, and good enough for chauffeuring work, yet economical enough to use for private hire work such as airport runs. It incorporates a lot of safety technology and its interior finish is up to S-Class standard. And ignore the hysteria about diesel – this is an economical and clean car with very low emissions of CO2, NOx and particulates.” Professional Driver magazine, launched in 2009, is the monthly publication for the UK private hire, chauffeur and taxi industry. Electric Road Trip
One year on from showing the I-PACE Concept at the LA Auto Show, Jaguar is back in town with a production prototype for final range and durability tests ahead of its official global reveal in 2018. Thousands of potential customers have pressed the ‘I want one’ button on www.jaguar.com to place a deposit or register a strong interest in the hotly anticipated electric SUV. Not only will they be at the front of the queue when order books officially open in March, but a lucky
few have been chosen to accompany Jaguar’s engineers as prototype vehicles complete final validation tests. Ann Voyer from Pasadena asked Jaguar if the I-PACE would have enough range to complete her favourite road trip along California’s West Coast. To answer her question, Jaguar engineers took her on a long-distance range test – on one charge only. The I-PACE production prototype drove 200 miles from Sunset Boulevard, Los Ange-
les, to Morro Bay, San Luis Obispo, on a single charge of its advanced Lithium-Ion battery. Ian Hoban, Jaguar Vehicle Line Director, said: “After 1.5 million global test miles, the I-PACE is ready for production and is proven to deliver long distances on a single charge. Jaguar’s first battery electric vehicle will also be fast to charge; our target is a zero to 80 per cent charge being achievable in a short break.” Full specification and pricing for Jaguar’s electric performance SUV
will be announced in March 2018 when order books will officially open. • Jaguar I-PACE enters final validation testing ahead of global reveal in early 2018 • Pricing and specifications will be announced and order books open for full configurations in March 2018 • Over 200 production prototypes have completed 1.5 million miles and 11,000 hours of component rig testing

McLAREN SPECIAL OPERATIONS CREATES A NEW COLOUR WITH A McLAREN FAMILY HISTORY: ‘MURIWAI WHITE’ McLaren Special Operations, the bespoke division of McLaren Automotive, has delved deep into the company’s heritage to create a unique colour with a family story attached. ‘Muriwai’ refers to different episodes of the McLaren story: it is the name of the New Zealand costal community where McLaren founder Bruce McLaren won his first motor race; it is also the name he gave to his family house in Surrey, England and it is now the name of a new special paint colour in the MSO catalogue for the recently launched 570S Spider. Inspired by the whitewashed walls, deep blue doors and shutters of the handsome McLaren homestead, Muriwai White paint is white with blue flecks. The colour was developed by McLaren Special Operations, Amanda McLaren, Bruce’s only child and a brand ambassador for McLaren Automotive and McLaren paint Partner AkzoNobel. Amanda returned to her childhood home in the first 570S Spider to be finished in Muriwai White, recalling the importance of the house that shared the same name. “My mother Patty had been at a dinner party with a palm reader, who told her she’d live in a big white house with blue doors and shutters,” revealed Amanda. “Whether by destiny or design, that is what transpired and Muriwai was a place of pride for Bruce and comfort to Patty years after my father’s premature death in 1970 at the age of 32. Muriwai was always special to my father; the exotic name as much as the house. Fortytwo kilometres’ northwest of Auckland, it’s where he grew up and won his first hill climb, aged 15, at the wheel of an Ulster Austin which remains in McLaren’s heritage collection in Woking. “ Bruce and his wife Patty settled in Surrey after he won a racing scholarship which brought him from New Zealand to Great Britain in 1958. With Bruce McLaren Racing established, Amanda was born and after renting
modest accommodation in nearby Surbiton and Weybridge, the family built their dream home in Waltonon-Thames into which they moved in 1967. “I’m sure my parents would have loved this ‘Muriwai’ colour, and they would be so proud of the 570S Spider and the other McLaren road cars, as that is where my father saw the future of the company,” commented Amanda. “The M12GT was his vision of the road-going supercar and the DNA of that 1969 car is evident in all of McLaren Automotive’s products. To compare photos of the M12GT outside our old house with the 570S Spider today is a rather lovely circle to behold.” McLaren Special Operations can create any colour a client wishes. Muriwai White is a particularly special shade given the family story behind it. As well as personalised paintwork, MSO offers other enhancement options – such as material upgrades – and takes bespoke commissions for ultra-limited or one-off models, taking something that is already rare and making it truly unique. Many MSO customers like to order ‘off the menu’, but in this instance MSO is offering the Muriwai White as an ‘à la carte option’ available on any McLaren road car, with personalisation beyond the signature paintwork according to individual taste. • Muriwai is the New Zealand costal community where Bruce McLaren won his first motor race at the age of 15 and the name chosen for his family house in England that was painted in a blueish white colour • Daughter Amanda McLaren worked with McLaren Special Operations (MSO) to develop a new MSO paint colour of a similar hue, initially for the 570S Spider and now proposed for the whole McLaren Sports Series • The Muriwai house where Bruce McLaren and his family lived is currently for sale

HYUNDAI MOTOR UK LAUNCHES ‘INNOVATORS OF THE FUTURE’ SUV INTERIOR DESIGN COMPETITION High Wycombe, 30 November 2017 – Building on its commitment to innovation and future thinking, Hyundai Motor UK launches an SUV interior design competition ‘Innovators of the Future’. Aimed at UK design students, the competition asks students to harness their design genius and create a future Sports Utility Vehicle interior. It is predicted that in 50 years’ time all SUVs will be driver-
less – which means that current interior designs will be obsolete. Removing the necessity for forward facing seats, steering wheels and windows, SUVs may become an extension of our homes or offices. The competition, Innovators of the Future, asks the question, what will these interiors of the future look like? The winner of Innovators of the Future and a friend will be sent on an exclusive 5-day trip to Seoul, South Korea with £1,000 spending money. The trip is complete with a tour of the factory where Hyundai’s designs come to life. The
winner and runners up will also have their submissions showcased on the Hyundai website, which receives millions of visits annually. Hyundai has assembled a judging team of influential experts from the world of motoring, technology and design to make the final call: Geraldine Tan, Editor of Little Big Bell, a London based, award winning interiors and lifestyle blog, Seetal Solanki, Founder and Director of Ma-tt-er, a materials research design studio and James Taylor, Deputy Features Editor at Car Magazine. They’ll be looking for innovation, future-proofing, design and sustainability. Tony Whitehorn Hyundai Motor UK’s President and CEO comments: “We are proud to offer this once in a lifetime opportunity to design students in the UK. The industry continues to change rapidly spurred on by new technologies – the cars of today will be nothing like the cars of the future, so I am excited to see how these talented students will interpret the brief. Good luck to everyone who enters the competition!” • Hyundai launches interior design competition to UK design students • Win a 5-day trip to Hyundai’s HQ in Seoul • Influential judging panel consists of experts from world of motoring, tech and design • For more information and to enter visit: http://www.hyundai.co.uk/suv-4x4

SOCIAL MEDIA ADDICTS, DRINK AND DRUG DRIVING AND MOBILE PHONE IAM RoadSmart’s third annual Safety Culture Survey which examines the attitudes and concerns of UK drivers, has found that for the third year running their biggest worries are people updating social media or sending text messages while driving, drink or drug driving and mobile phone use. Drivers checking social media is the biggest single perceived threat that road users feel – slightly higher than those who text and email, and closely followed by drink and drug drivers. The survey of more than 2,000 motorists found that more than 90% of those surveyed thought that the dangers caused by people accessing social media or email messages while driving was a significant threat to their personal safety and that the problem is increasing, with 80% believing the problem more significant than three years ago. Driving while under the influence of alcohol or illegal drugs also remains an issue, with 90% of drivers surveyed identifying this as a serious safety problem. And while around half of the drivers surveyed believe the dangers posed by drink-driving have remained the same over time, the problem of people driving under the influence of drugs is increasing, with 64% identifying this as more significant over the last three years. Other key risks to personal safety on the road identified in the survey include talking on mobile phones (89%), speeding on residential streets (87%), drivers ignoring red lights (87%) and tired drivers (86%). Aggression behind the wheel was also identified as a problem, with 75% of those surveyed believing this a danger to their personal safety. When asked about their own driving habits, about one in three (30%) said they drove slower than others on the road, while just over half (55%) said they drove at the same speed as others around them, with only one in seven willing to
admit to going faster than everyone else. IAM RoadSmart’s survey also found there is little tolerance for breaking motoring laws; 50% of drivers feel it is unacceptable to drive 10mph higher than the speed limit on a motorway. This figure falls substantially for other forms of speeding such as driving at 5mph more than the limit on a residential road (76% unacceptable), and driving at 5mph greater than the limit near a school (90% unacceptable). While 45% thought it was acceptable to drive using a hands-free phone, that
figure drops to just 9% when it comes to a hand-held one. The least accepted actions surveyed were driving when the motorist thought they had too much to drink (6%) and driving after using marijuana (7%). When it comes to which motoring transgressions those surveyed had committed themselves, speeding was the one most admitted to. Some 16% said they regularly or often drove 10mph more than the limit on the motorway, while 14% said they drove 5mph more than the limit regularly or often on a residential street. There is also widespread support for tough laws against many motoring offences. Some 96% strongly support laws against reading, typing, or sending a text message or email while driving, while 95% strongly support the law against using a handheld mobile phone while driving. Meanwhile 93% strongly supported a law requiring all drivers age 85 and older to pass a simple screening test and 91% strongly supported a law requiring all drivers age 75 and older to provide an eye test certificate. Finally, support for drivers to continue to improve their driving skills by taking advanced driving tuition and passing an advanced driving test has been increasing each year since IAM RoadSmart began the safety culture survey – rising from 61% in 2015, to 65% in 2016 to 68% this year. Neil Greig, IAM RoadSmart director of policy and research, said: “In the three years we have been running this survey, people’s worries about drivers using new smartphone technology have remained consistently high. And while public awareness of the dangers of using handheld mobile phones is now good, almost 60% of drivers still believe it is acceptable to use a hands free phone despite growing evidence of the distraction this can cause. “With three years of data there are several other trends emerging which do cause us some concern. Around a quarter of drivers still feel it is acceptable to speed at 5mph over the limit in residential areas and one in in ten believe it is alright to get behind the wheel after taking alcohol and marijuana. These figure show we have a long way to go before all the dangers caused by reckless driver behaviour are eradicated from our streets. Road safety activities have suffered from recent public spending cuts but our survey shows that key issues still remain that must be tackled through education, training and publicity.”
BUILDBASE HONDA ON TOP!
Build base Honda’s Charles Lefrancois raced to a commanding victory at the opening round of the 2018 Arena across Tour at Manchester Arena. Throughout practice and qualification the 27-year-old Frenchman didn’t drop out of the top two on his 2018 CRF450R before running 2-1 in his heat races and picking up an extra three championship points by topping the hot lap competition. When the gate dropped on the Main Event he grabbed the holeshot and then controlled the race from the front, leading every lap and taking the chequered flag with a two-second advantage over the second-placed rider. “It’s a very good start for me and I’m really happy,” he said. “All night has been good for me with great starts and I have a good feeling with the Buildbase Honda so I am very happy for the team. “I took the holeshot in the Main Event and then concentrated on my lines because the track was difficult with many ruts – the dirt was very soft but I like that because it gave me many lines to choose from.” “It’s not been the best start for me and I’m a little bit disap-
pointed,” said the Frenchman. “It was difficult in qualifying and hard to make a fast lap but I got a good start in the Main Event and was fourth until I got a flat tyre. Fifth is not the best but it’s okay for the first round. “The track was very soft but I’m sure it will be better for the next round in Newcastle so I’m looking to improve my position.” Team boss Dave Thorpe was delighted with the result. “It’s been a fantastic night for the team,” he said. “Charles didn’t put a foot wrong – I’m absolutely chuffed to bits for him. We didn’t really know him too well before he came over to test but straight away we realised he was a quality rider. “He’s ridden amazingly all night. I’m so pleased for him and the whole team because they’ve all worked very hard. Arenacross takes a lot of effort to get right – I’m sure we won’t have the highs all the way along but tonight has been great. “Unfortunately, Fabien got a puncture with three laps to go which probably cost him a podium but it’s been a solid opening night and I’m confident he has what it takes to run at the front. He knows how to win this championship.”
NEW RANGE OF RACE WHEELS TO BE LAUNCHED
The range of race wheels has been testing and setting new standards in construction and performance, achieved by the use of FEA technology to design the wheels, ensuring that weight saving doesn’t compromise strength. Modern flowform casting techniques, using virgin alloy, results in wheels able to pass with ease the stringent 690kg impact and cornering fatigue test, resulting in wheels that perform better, are more durable and will last longer. Understanding what their customers want from a wheel has enabled the company to create a standard where each wheel can be customised to suit specific vehicle requirements by machining the wheel to any offset within its range. Revolution’s managing director, Warren McKiernan says, “We found a niche some years ago dealing with the more discerning type of rally competitor, who would rather purchase a wheel that was custom-made and deal with distributors of ours who were knowledgeable about the product and passion-

LEASYS ARRIVES IN BELGIUM The internationalisation of Leasys SpA, the Contract Hire company of FCA Bank, continues with the presence, as of today, in Belgium, with a new branch of the Italian Holding. After entering Spain, France, Germany and the United Kingdom, Leasys therefore takes up the announced expansion program abroad, arriving in a market that is mature in the leasing sector but still has significant growth prospects for Contract Hire, especially with regards to small and medium-sized enterprises and the private customer’s target. A market where Leasys will be able to measure itself immediately thanks to the variety and flexibility of its mobility solutions, which have already met the favour of new foreign customers, generating volumes up more than 20% in the countries where Leasys has arrived in 2017. In Italy, Leasys records an increase of about 5% of hired cars compared to 2016 - the record year with over 54 thousand vehicles delivered - and it is growing particularly in the segment of professionists and private individuals, demonstrating how private customers agree to evaluate Contract Hire when the proposal is clear, convenient and easily accessible. Overall, Leasys now operates a fleet of about 200,000 units (cars and commercial vehicles). Leasys success is based on efficiency and innovative services
thanks to digital technologies - a strategic asset in which Leasys continues to invest - and draws strength from the renewed range of Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) products. Today Leasys is able to respond to the most diverse mobility needs with Jeep Compass, Alfa Romeo Stelvio, Giulia, Fiat Tipo and Fiat 500, the latter capable of persuading even
the Millennials, who hire it on Amazon. Moreover, internationalisation is part of the broader growth and diversification strategy of the FCA Bank Group, which aims to increase its market share by proposing FCA models more effectively at European level to the fleet and private markets. With the expansion of the reference markets, Leasys will be increasingly competitive and able to best meet the needs of its local and international customers: the goal is to become one of the top five European Contract Hire players within the next three years. In Belgium, too, Leasys will “export” its flagship product in the last year - Be Free and Be Free Pro for SMEs and professionals - already the star of the launch campaign for Leasys operations in Spain, France. At the helm of Leasys Belgium is Danny Meulenberghs, under coordination by Jean-luc Mas, General Manager of FCA Bank Group in Belgium.

ate about the sport - and that really built the brand. With our new range of race wheels, we will be able to cater for a wider audience but on the same basis.” Since the company began back in the late 60’s, it has managed to stay abreast of trends in manufacture and it is this heritage that enables Revolution Wheels to continue to offer retro wheels for classic competition vehicles, as well as the newcomers to racing who demand a product that is not only technically advanced but also craftsman finished. “With customers such as Jimmie McRae and Stig Blomqvist over the years, demanding a wheel that they can totally rely on, it isn’t really surprising that we should have quietly had a path beaten to our door by customers seeking that little extra,” concludes McKiernan. Balancing proud heritage with an eye to the future, Revolution Wheels will be pleased to discuss visitors’ requirements as they view the new range on the stand.

Battered Fish, Chips, Mushy Peas and Tartare Sauce
My Homemade
Homemade Fish and Chips Supper!
Ingredients – Fish 1.5KG Fresh Cod Fillets (skin removed) 4 Cups Plain Flour 1.5 Teaspoon Salt 1.5 Teaspoon Red Chilli Powder 1.5 Teaspoon Garam Masala 2 Teaspoons Black Pepper
Ingredients – Mushy Peas 2 Cups Frozen Peas 2 Tablespoons Butter 1 Teaspoon Salt 1 Teaspoon Black Pepper
Ingredients – Tartare Sauce 6 Pickled Gherkins 2 Teaspoon Chopped Fresh Dil 1 White Onion 3 Quarters of a bottle of Mayonnaise 1 Teaspoon Salt 2 Teaspoon Sugar
Good old fashioned fish and chips is steeped in British history and no matter where you look – on the seaside, on the high street or just around the corner there’s easy access to a good old pack of fish and chips any time of day! I personally love a good takeaway, who doesn’t? But recently I’ve become a little more
aware of what I put into my body and as a result this made me realise just how I have no idea what any chip shop or takeaway uses in their recipes! I’m not debating that you can’t get some good hearty fish and chips but frankly I decided it was time I make it at home. This was good and I mean jaw dropping good.
I paired this with some fresh cut fried chips, homemade mushy peas and some of my now famous tartare sauce! Try it and believe me, you’ll never look at a chip shop in the same way again.
Method
For your tartar sauce simply chop up your onions and gherkins into small Diced pieces, add in your Mayonnaise, dil and your salt and sugar and mix. Leave this in the fridge as the cooler it is, the better it will taste. Boil your mushy peas, mash, and add in salt, pepper and butter. In a separate large pan heat a lot of oil, once you feel like the oil is ready (feel free to test with a drop of batter) turn down to medium and fry a few of your battered fillets at a time. Don’t fry too many as they’ll start to stick and
then batter will come off. Fry for approximately 7-8 mins until your fillets are nice and brown. Fry some chips. I’ll admit mine were shop brought but they did the job for me! That’s really all there is too it. Serve your freshly fried cod fillets with your mushy peas, tartare sauce and your fried chips and of course lashings of salt and vinegar! Try it and let me know what you think. Hope you enjoy this as much as my whole family did!
– Ensure your fish fillets are clean and you’ve halved any pieces if there are any pieces that are big. In a bowl mix in all of your dry ingredients, add water a little at a time to create a batter thick enough to coat but not so thick that your fish disappears! This process takes time as the flour can almost gel together and decide that it’s going to make your arm work for it but keep whisking as it’ll be worth it! Leave your batter to one side.

Now Or Never For Asian Cricketers In The UK Lord Patel of Bradford, an independent director on the ECB board said: “There are 3m South Asians in Britain. A third want to engage with cricket every day. Cricket is the only sport in England and Wales that has the South Asian community knocking the door down and we have been shutting it! “If we don’t crack it in the next few years we will never do it. We’ve just had the Champions Trophy. Next summer India and Pakistan are touring. In 2019 it is the World Cup and the Ashes. Then in 2020 it’s the new T20. The stars have aligned. The Asian community is saying yes to working with the ECB for the first time ever.” “Britain’s South Asians represent only five per cent of the population, yet they account for 18 per cent of the £685m spent on cricket every year,” he added. Lord Patel moved to Britain from Kenya when he was
Brit Asian Girls Go For Bowls Bowls started in the 13th century Britain, as a slow-paced sport for gentlemen. Girls in Oldham from British black, and Asian backgrounds, are changing this perception. “I thought why not just try it,” says Qhadijah Begum, a 17-year-old Oldham College student. “It’s fun, it’s not the hardest of sports and you can learn in a good 10 minutes.” Qhadijah and her friends, all aged 16-18, take part in weekly Bowls sessions at Freizland Bowls Club in Saddleworth. The sessions are organised by Sport England, where £5m of lottery funding went into 49 colleges, aiming to get under-represented students fit and active. Sport England’s Active Lives Survey (2015-2016) shows that South Asian women are the least likely group to play sports, with over 51% not exercising for at least 150 minutes per week. Qhadijah reveals “I was scared that
people would look at me and ask ‘this girl wears a hijab but she’s playing sport, doesn’t she have respect for herself?’ - but every human has a right to do what they want.” Aklima, an 18-year-old student from the same college also agrees with this, and said: “People will think that because she’s all covered up, she won’t be active. But all we want is motivation and someone to tell us we can do it.” Paul Townsend, chairman of Freizland Bowls Club said: “The only criteria is flat soled shoes, they can wear anything they want to - that’s what makes it accessible,” “People think it’s an old man’s game but this has to be washed away, because there’s a lot of young people and it would be fantastic for the sport to make it more diverse with other cultures and faiths playing the sport.” By Ambreen Mahmood.
one, and encountered dreadful poverty and racism. “I never quite figured out why I got chased regularly by skinheads shouting that they were ‘Paki bashers’ – suffice to say I didn’t hang around to seek an explanation – I became a good runner!” “Currently in the UK, 30 per cent of recreational cricket is played by South Asians. If you add backstreets, tape-ball and so on, it’s nearer 40 per cent. Despite living in urban areas, in poverty and deprivation, they will still spend money on cricket – equipment, pitch hire and so on. “We need people like me who love cricket but can bring something else to it. I defer cricket knowledge to others. We don’t necessarily need people who are associated with a specific county – we need people who can run a Test, know what it takes to be a professional cricketer and so on.” By Ambreen Mahmood.

Pakistan’s Female Powerlifters Go For Gold P akistan stunningly won 15 gold medals at the Oceania Powerlifting Championship and Pacific Invitationals in Singapore. With four medals a-piece from three female players including Saniha Ghafoor in the 57kg event, Sybil Sohail in the 47kg event, and 20-year-old Twinkle Sohail in the 72kg event. Twinkle said, “Women are just as good as men, and we’ve just proved it with powerlifting, haven’t we? Hopefully I’d become the first Pakistani women to even win the World Championships someday. It is only to show that more women should take up strength sports.” With her performance, Saniha impressed the Australians and received an invite to a three-month training program in Melbourne by the Australian Powerlifting Federation.
Sybil overcame a major setback as she reduced 1.5kg 12 hours before the weigh-ins to ensure her participation. This did not stop her from winning four gold medals for Pakistan. Their male team-mate, Mahmood Heera won gold in the 120kg event, lifting 609kg, beating his national record of 590kg. Syed Nadeem Hashmi lifted 530kgs in the 105kg event to take the gold medal, and teenager Muhammad Ahmed Khan won gold in the 120kg sub-junior category. Pakistan’s head coach Rashed Malik said, “It was one of my aims to make sure that we show the world that Pakistani women can also thrive in powerlifting events. We’ve got a very good response from the international community; they were surprised and impressed. We made sure that our athletes, and especially the girls, get their professional gear before the event and do not lag behind in any way. They’ve just proved that with the right training and facilities they can win accolades for Pakistan and have the potential and talent to be among the best in the world.”

Meet The Afghan Bruce Lee.
The Afghan Bruce Lee is another step closer to fulfilling his dream of becoming a famous martial artist or an actor. Abbas Alizada of Afghanistan has captured the attention of kung fu legend Jet Li, the BBC and RT, a Russian television network who have made a documentary on the Afghan star. 24-year-old Abbas has an eye-catching resemblance to the legendary Bruce Lee. With his perfect physique and trademark kung fu techniques, that have helped him gain popularity from all parts of the world. He first became famous three years
ago after posting a picture of himself striking a pose next to an image of Lee on Facebook went viral. Alizada, the youngest of 10 children in a poor household, comes from Afghanistan’s Hazara community, an ethnic group that possesses Central Asian features. His increasing popularity brought pride to his fellow Hazaras, Shiite Muslims who have long been tortured by the Taliban and other Sunni extremists. Just by watching Bruce Lee’s fight scenes, he was able to imitate his moves and even knows how to handle the nunchaku, a popular martial arts weapon. Amongst the iconic backdrop of the Darul Aman palace in Kabul, he performed fighting moves from Bruce Lee’s films, Fist of Fury and Way of the Dragon. In early 2017, Jet Li sent his production team to Afghanistan to make a documentary of his struggle in pursuing his dream of becoming a great martial artist. Abbas is on the verge of international fame, one can only hope he succeeds and makes Afghanistan proud.
