MESSAGE FROM
THE URBAN YOUTH ACADEMY Dear partners and future participants, Greetings! I am pleased to share that due to the great success of the first Asia-Pacific Youth Exchange (APYE) held last January, the Urban Youth Academy, along with most valued partners such as the Asian Development Bank, UN Habitat and AIESEC, come together once again to make the program even better! The next APYE is scheduled to take place from 31 July to 13 August, 2016 at the Asian Development Bank Headquarters, Mandaluyong City, Philippines. The APYE is a youth leadership development program with a specific focus on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG). Youth leaders from the Asia-Pacific region are engaged in a twoweek capacity-building program that equips delegates with the right skills and attitudes to tackle SDGs in their communities. On APYE’s first run, we welcomed 200 delegates from 11 Asia-Pacific countries. We aim to make this year’s APYE experience more meaningful by enhancing its three components: (i) Leadership Development Training, (ii) Local Immersion, and (iii) Asian Youth Forum. Our focus on the youth is firmly hinged on the hope that their generation, the #SDGeneration, has a legitimate chance to end poverty. By investing in the youth and beginning the process of sustainable development with them, we inch closer to attaining positive impact for all by 2030. This year’s theme is IMPACT2030 and it is with much hope that we ask you to join us as we begin a global movement to end poverty! To know more about the APYE, please do not hesitate to contact our team at ikingcorpus@urbanyouthac.org. We look forward to your positive response and most valued participation in APYE! Together, let’s make the dream of ending poverty happen! Yours sincerely,
Hyoungmin Kim Managing Director, Urban Youth Academy

MESSAGE FROM THE
ASIAN DEVELOPMENT BANK Endorsement of the Asia Pacific Youth Exchange Program, 31 July - 12 August 2016, Philippines Strategy 2020, Asian Development Bank’s (ADB) long-term strategic framework, highlights demographic changes in Asia as one of the key factors that would shape regional development.1 There are more young people between ages 10 and 24 today than at any other time in human history, and about 9 out of 10 of these people live in less developed countries.2 Asia is the region with the largest number of young people, with 754 million.3 In some of these countries, the percentage of young people under age 24 can exceed 50% of the population.4 ADB recognizes that young people present an enormous opportunity for Asia and the Pacific. Youth are powerful agents of change who, if supported and empowered, can drive the achievement of our vision of an Asia Pacific free from poverty and internationally agreed commitments such as the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Together, we must ensure that Asia’s young people benefit from and contribute to these rapid developments for inclusive growth in the region and help achieve the 17 SDGs. ADB Youth Initiative endorses the Asia Pacific Youth Exchange Program (APYE) under the theme, “#IMPACT2030.” To be held on 31 July - 12 August 2016, APYE will mobilize 250 young leaders and representatives of youth-led civil society organization from across Asia and the Pacific to support youth in contributing to the efforts towards achieving the SDGs. We look forward to your active participation in APYE and to hosting parts of the program that build the capacity of young people in the region. Yours sincerely,
Christopher I. Morris Head, NGO and Civil Society Center Sustainable Development and Climate Change Department Asian Development Bank

PROGRAM CONTEXT Over the past decade, there has been a growing recognition of the youth’s participation in economic, social and political processes. Governments, international agencies, civil society and private sector organizations have realized that young people are powerful agents of change who, if supported and empowered, can drive the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG). The youth sector’s immense potential is especially critical for the Asia-Pacific where 754 million young people reside – making it the most youthful region in the world1. The Asian

“Before participating in the APYE program, I had very little idea about SDGs and thought had the impression that it is the responsibility of developmental organizations to help them, not me. But that impression has changed through my experiences in the program and realized that even the smallest acts can make big changes. Also, every SDG goals are interrelated to each other so achieving one goal actually leads to achieving more and so, trying our best in achieving our vision-mission will make the world better.” 22
“The APYE was a stepping stone for me to know more about the SDGs in a deep and meaningful way. SDGs are the main avenues that we, the #SDGeneration, can work for the betterment of all generations.”

“APYE help me a lot to make all my plans turn into a reality. Last March 2016, after the APYE, I conducted a Youth Leadership Forum and consultative meeting held in the Mindanao State University, Marawi city to open a discussion on SDGs and how it will help our province and communities. The program was attended by the ARMM Regional Governor Mujiv Hataman and Lanao del Sur Provincial Governor Mamintal Adiong, along with 75 Young Professional Leaders from my province. Through this initiative, I got the support of several stakeholders that now allows me to execute future SDG related programs.”
“The APYE was a great opportunity for me and my friends to understand the SDGs. The APYE also connected me with top-notch SDG efforts led by international organizations such as the Asian Development Bank, where I now work as an intern continuing the challenge of attaining the SDGs, thanks to the APYE.”
