Aung Tun from the Myanmar Tourism Federation. “Those [restaurants] that have discipline, can meet quality requirements and satisfy customers will be approved to run night stalls at the market. We have studied the factors contributing to the success of night markets in other countries,” said U Kyaw Myat Moe, general secretary of MROA. A date has not yet been confirmed for the opening of the night market.
Domestic pilgrims tipped to hit 5 million
T
he number of internal pilgrims continues to grow, with up to 5 million people this year expected to travel to the country’s prime religious and historical sites. According to recent figures, domestic pilgrimages increased in number from 3.1 million in 2011-12 to 4.2 million in 2012-13, 4.6 million in 2013-14 and 4.8 million in 2014-15. A study of recent festivals, including the iconic Taungbyone festival outside Mandalay, held in August, indicates that more tourists are making their own travel arrangements. Southern Myanmar is getting particularly popular. A popular new destination is Cocks Comb Island in the Myeik Archipelago. Demand for short trips to Kyaikhtiyo, Kayin State, Chaungtha and Ngwe Saung is also expected to be strong from December through to March.. 12

T
he luxury river cruiser “Anawrahta” is ready to set off on its maiden voyage in late September from Yangon harbor after leaving Ho Chi Minh City on July 8. After arriving from Ho Chi Minh City last July, the ship is currently under renovation process by skilled Burmese artisans and will soon be ready for final testing. “Anawrahta” will offer the best of river cruising with a host of shore excursions, including eight newly developed tours that embody the unique “Anawrahta” style. The cruiser’s purpose-built design allows it to cruise further out and to stay longer in areas with very low water levels.

Thingyan Water Festival Celebrating the Myanmar New Year, this festival lasts for several days and is marked by major, good-natured water throwing. It is also a time of merit making, and older people go to temples for prayer and alms giving. October Thadingyut Festival (Festival of Lights) Marking the end of Buddhist Lent, this festival, held on the full moon day of Thadingyut, lasts for three days during which houses and streets are festively decorated and illuminated. People crowd into their local pagodas to offer alms and make merit. Younger people also pay homage to their parents, elders and teachers. Phaungdaw Oo Pagoda Festival, Inle Lake Phaungdaw Oo Pagoda’s Buddha images are ferried from village to villages for people to pay homage. Fairs, dances, the leg rowers’ boat races and general festivities counterbalance the more austere ceremonial aspect. This is the biggest celebration in the Shan state. Elephant Dance Festival Though enacted in several towns and villages, the town with the best festival is Kyauk-se, 40km south of Mandalay. Two full size paper elephants, one black, one white, each with two men inside, dance through the town with much pageantry and ceremony

November Tazaungdaing Festival Held on the full moon day of Tazaungmon according to the Myanmar Calendar, this festival finds houses and public buildings decorated and brightly lit. Robes and other requisites are offered to monks with the special offering of Mathothigan - a robe that is woven in one single day - held on the eve of the full moon. Dedicated teams of weavers compete with one another to complete the robes, which are then reverently offered to images of Buddha.
