‘Explore’ remote areas

Garuda to expand across Indonesian archipelago using smaller aircraft Garuda has launched a new subbrand to serve more remote parts of the Indonesian archipelago. Named ‘Explore’, the new service will use the airline’s new fleet of smaller aircraft to access islands and airports unable to handle larger aircraft. The move forms part of the Indonesian government’s plan to connect more remote areas of the country. The Explore brand will be split into

Virgin Australia

Adds Bali Flights

Airline to launch new services from Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne Commencing 19 December 2013, the airline added an extra weekly service from Brisbane, two extra flights from Sydney and three more weekly services from Melbourne. In total, the new flights will add more than 1,000 extra weekly seats to the Indonesian island. Virgin Australia’s chief commercial officer, Judith Crompton said, “Bali is one of Australia’s most popular international leisure destinations, visited by over 2.8 million Australians each year. By adding more than 1,000 seats per week, we will be able to support increased demand to this region.” All new flights will be operated by Virgin Australia’s 176-seat Boeing 737-800 aircraft offering both business and economy classes. The airline’s in-flight entertainment system will also allow guests to stream content to their own smartphones, laptops and tablets.

Mount Sinabung Eruptions

More Than 15,000 Indonesians displaced Residents on high alert and flights cancelled as volcano spews rocks After eight violent eruptions occurring just hours apart on Sunday 24th November, Indonesia’s National Disaster Mitigation Agency has called for the evacuations of more than 15,000 residents who live within a fivekilometer radius of Mount Sinabung. The 2,500-meter-tall volcano, located on the western Indonesian island of Sumatra, has been increasingly active since September. The latest string of eruptions has sent rocks and huge columns of gray ash as high as

Then it started raining down rocks, said Robert Peranginangin, a local government spokesperson. Kuala Namu International Airport, located just outside of Medan and opposite Mount Sinabung, has seen many flights cancelled or delayed

Mount Sinabung sits atop the “Ring of Fire,” an earthquake and volcanic eruption-prone area that stretches across the Pacific Ocean due to unstable plate tectonics. It is just one of 129 active volcanoes in Indonesia. Latest update: Mount Sinabung could erupt again

Indonesian authorities have reported no known loss of life due to the volcanic eruptions – a stark contrast to the country’s deadly 2010 eruption of Mount Merapi that claimed the lives of more than 350 people in

NUSA DUA FIESTA The 5-Day Nusa Dua Festival Celebrated Culture, Sports and Entertainment The 16th Nusa Dua Festival was held in and around the Nusa Dua Complex in South Bali from November 15-19, 2013. A celebration that incorporated elements of art, culture, sports and entertainment - one of the highlights of this year’s event was a unique Half-Marathon “Run Under the Stars” after sunset on November 17, 2013 conducted on Bali’s new Mandara Toll Road. The Indonesian Music Expo (IMEX) also formed part of this year’s Nusa Dua Festival with leading musical acts from Indonesian and abroad performing. The theme of this year’s event was “Wana Lelanguan” – a call to conserve Indonesian natural environment and forest resources. In support of this theme film programs for children focusing on energy and sustainability and workshops on marine conservation were conducted during the Festival.

A recent arrival was a three-monthold baby boy called Aiman. AIman’s pregnant Mother was widowed, poor and alone. Left with little choice she gave her baby up for adoption in order to care for her first child. Shortly after taking Aiman the adoptive parents noticed something was not quite right and took him to the local hospital. The hospital explained Aiman was suffering from a rare genetic disease called Icthyosis and no hospital in Bali could help. The Doctor recommended they take Aiman to Bali Kids for advice. Sadly the adoptive parents took Aiman straight back to his birth Mother declaring they could not care for her son due his condition. The Mother then reached out to Bali Kids and we were happy to provide a home for Aiman and offer the best treatment available in Bali for his condition. Sadly there is no cure for AIman’s disease but it simply needs to be managed. It is highly labor intensive to care for a child with Ichtyhosis and very difficult for a single parent. Bali Kids exists to help children just like Aiman and we hope to help him lead a happy and healthy life. Thank you to Asia World Indonesia for all its support and care for our children. 21

Tjokorda Istri Sri Tjandrawati is the late wife of Tjokorda Gde Putra Sukawati, head of Ubud’s ruling family, who died at Mount Elizabeth Hospital on October 14, 2013 in

Singapore at

the age of 59. More than 100 people were employed to build a 25 meter high tower which was used to carry the body of the deceased to the cemetery. The cremation ceremony is an important rite which is held for deceased members of the Puri Agung Ubud royal family to show respect to families and the local community. The Balinese believe cremation is a purification ceremony that returns Panca Maha Butha (five elements in the universe that formed life) and is also believed to release the body’s spirit so that they may reincarnate.

UNESCO World Heritage Site - Bali At the end of 2012 some of Bali’s rice terraces joined the coveted ranks of UNESCO World Heritage sites. Most Heritage sites around the world are historically cultural, but Bali’s ancient rice fields are still part of the islands everyday life. Recognition by UNESCO carries international status but also brings attention to the many challenges of ensuring that the subaks and the farmers are protected. The purpose of applying for WHS status was to make the traditional subak system visible to the world and by doing so, hopefully preserve it from extinction. There are many factors threatening the subaks, including a major loss of soil fertility and padi ecology due to decades of using agricultural chemicals. The rice farmers receive a very low income which these days, makes it very hard to live on and so they decide to sell their land. Once sold and developed, Bali’s precious rice fields are gone forever. The Balinese have been growing rice for over a millennia. The island’s irrigation water, leached through volcanic soil, is rich in natural dissolved

26

CHICAZINE

phosphates and potassium; it is a perfect hydroponic delivery system. The farmers grew many varieties of heritage rice and the cooperative system between the subaks of providing and withholding water controlled insect pests and rats. It all worked wonderfully for about a thousand years. Four subak landscapes in five regencies have been selected as the World Heritage Site, officially named Cultural Landscape of Bali Province. The first is the water temple Pura Ulun Danu Batur, where the priests and farmers traditionally meet to consult and gather holy water. The second is the subak landscape of Pakerisan Watershed, believed to be the oldest in Bali.

The third and largest is the subak landscape of Catur Angga Batukaru, which includes forests and two lakes. The fourth is the royal water temple Pura Taman Ayun, which represents the importance of the royal family. The total area of the WHS is over 19,000 hectares. UNESCO itself has no authority to protect the site. Disagreements and jockeying between different levels of local, provincial and national government, vested interests, development pressures and infrastructure all have to be considered. It will be challenging to manage the site as a whole when each area has its own traditional laws and regulations. According to UNESCO protocols no develop-

ment is allowed unless it’s sustainable, and the land can be sold only with agreement from other subak members and cannot be converted. But this is very challenging to implement. Part of the mandate is the conservation and promotion of the ecosystem. The government is now supporting the farmers in transforming the rice fields back to organic cultivation, beginning with the top fields, but it will be a slow process. Conservation of material culture, such as the increasingly rare lumbung or rice barns, and the culture of offerings, must also be protected. It is going to be a big job. UNESCO recognition brings these issues into focus on an international scale. The eyes of the world may ultimately save Bali’s ancient subak‌.
