Amanusa (peaceful isle) occupies a gentle rise on Bali’s southern peninsula of Nusa Dua, overlooking the rolling fairways of the Bali Golf and Country Club and the turquoise waters of the Indian Ocean. The vibrant shopping and dining areas of Sanur, Legian and Seminyak and Denpasar International Airport are just 20 minutes away, yet the resort is a secluded tropical retreat, providing access to an alluring beach on one of Bali’s most beautiful stretches of coastline.

The focus of Amanusa’s openair entrance is a teak-wood sculpture depicting scenes from the Ramayana, the epic Hindu poem.

Perched above the resort’s 30-metre main swimming pool is The Terrace which offers alfresco dining with sweeping views of the peninsula, the island of Nusa Penida and the sea beyond. The restaurant specialises in Thai and Indonesian cuisines with the addition of Continental fare during the day.

Open for dinner only, the Italian Restaurant (left & below) serves Italian cuisine. Meals can be enjoyed in the elegant high-ceilinged interior or the romantic outdoor courtyard amongst flowering frangipani trees overlooking the pool. The Bar (above) is situated on the other side of the pool from The Terrace and provides equally lofty views of the southern peninsula and the Indian Ocean. The ideal spot for sunset drinks or casual meals throughout the day, it is also the serene setting for afternoon tea.

At Amanusa’s Beach Club, nine thatched-roof bales line the white-sand beach. A pristine coral reef just offshore is ideal for snorkelling, and other water activities offered include kayaking and cruising. Light meals and refreshments are served at the informal beach restaurant, and seaside massage can be enjoyed in the open-air bales. Private sunrise breakfasts and beach barbecue dinners can be arranged.

All suites offer wooden fourposter beds draped in white mosquito netting (right ) and a spacious bathroom which includes twin vanities and an indoor sunken bathtub (left ). The combined bedroom and living area also features a writing desk and bay-window sofa, and opens onto an outdoor terrace furnished with a daybed and shade canopy (above).

Eight suites, including the Amanusa Suite, feature private swimming pools with expansive terraces, while all 35 suites enjoy outdoor showers built into moss-covered paras-stone walls (left). Guests can dine in-suite at any time of the day or night with 24-hour private dining.

Amanusa’s Boardroom (left ) includes two meeting rooms, a reception area (top) for coffee breaks and a private washroom. The Library (above) is another quiet sanctuary and provides a laptop with internet access. Wireless broadband connections are available in all suites and public areas.

Massage (above left ), facials, pedicures and manicures are available in the privacy of guests’ suites or in the dedicated Spa Suite. The Boutique (above right ) offers a variety of Balinese handicrafts for purchase. Amanusa’s two all-weather tennis courts (below) are floodlit for evening play and partners can be arranged. Other activities include cycling, island cruising, shopping, cooking classes and visits to places of cultural interest such as the ancient Luhur Uluwatu temple (right ).

Amanusa guests who are golf enthusiasts enjoy a priority reservation system at the adjacent Bali Golf and Country Club. One of the region’s pre-eminent golf clubs, this 18-hole course offers three distinct playing environments.
