FIRST IDEAS AND DESIGN REFERENCES Actually our idea was to start with an easy form and then to try to make the form more interesting and complicated. But we were obsessed from the idea to make something 3D dimensional with more character. We started with simple sketches. Everyone did some and then we discussed the final form. We decided to create something which remembered fish scales.
DESIGN PROJECT We made different versions of the idea using grasshopper with RhinoCeros. Our idea was to create something which creates an exciting shadow and has more than one layer. It is possible to use the fish scale in different directions and add them to the wall.
FABRICATION PLAN When the dimensions were clear we started doing a 3D Model at Rhino. We made drawings with the scale 1:1 and discussed the plans with Jose Miguel Rico-Martinez and finally Asier Erana and Natascha Junge discussed the plans in the fablab. We had to do some changes because our form wasn’t thickenough.
MANUFACTURE PROCESS Finally our work was good enough to order it and mill it. When we picked up the finished forms we had to sanded the wood forms. We glued the forms and let them dry for one night and then we repeated the sandpaper process again. The next step was to vacuum the forms with thin plastic sheets. After this process we removed unnecessary plastic and prepared the forms with tape, insulating foil and screw clamps. Then we filled the cement-fiberglass mix into the forms. During this process we shaked the form to avoid bubbles inside. We were waiting six days to let the fish scales dry. When we opened the forms we were very carefully. Removed unnecessary cement and took the fish scale out of the form. For the finishing we cutted some fiberglass and removed some cement by using the grinding machine and made the shape of the fish scale properly. We repeated the process two times and then we had four fish scales.
FINAL RESULT We made the cement pouring process two times so that we could have four pieces and see the effect they make together. They individually have the shape of small scales and when they are joined they form a framework that remind us to the skin of a fish.
