fluid transport systems

General Information

The Shurjoint* grooved and hole-cut couplings and fittings available from King Systems provides you and your customers with a high quality advanced mechanical piping system with proven versatility and reliability. King grooved pipe coupling products are suitable for use in a variety of piping applications which include industrial fluid transport, fire protection, heating, and air conditioning. King grooved systems offer a fast and easy assembly system, that can be installed 3-4 times faster than welding, and is more reliable than threading or flanging. The result is that using grooved pipe systems gives the lowest total installed cost, saving in both time and money. The King Systems range of couplings are designed to mechanically join standard rollgrooved or cut-grooved pipe. The pressure responsive rubber gasket provides a leak-tight seal when the housing segments are tightened. Pipe end preparation is fast and easy and can be done in the workshop or on the job site. A Grooved system is an ideal means of connecting pipe utilising roll-groove technology. An extensive range of hole-cut mechanical tees provides a fast and easy method to install mid-point branch lines and outlet connections without welding. A hole is first cut or drilled at the desired outlet location. The mechanical tee is then positioned in place. As the housing is tightened the pressure responsive moulded gasket moulds to the pipe OD, forming a leak-tight seal. King System flange adaptors from grooved components or pipe adapt to or make direct connections to ANSI Class 125 or Class 150, PN10, PN16 and Table E flanged components within a grooved piping system. This allows for fast and easy connections to valves, pumps and flanged piping systems. A full line of Grooved fittings and components including short radius bends and threaded branch reducing tees are supplied to satisfy the widest range of piping applications. Manufacturing processes meet or exceed the ISO-9002 quality assurance standards and are certified by Lloyd’s Register Quality Assurance Ltd. (LRQA). To allow use in fire protection, King systems products intended for this application have also passed the performance requirements of UL, UL of Canada, FM, LPC and VdS. This is your assurance that King products are manufactured to internationally recognized quality standards. Our strict quality control system ensures continued product performance and reliability. For information on Approvals listings for individual products contact your King Distributor. When you use King Systems you can be confident you are connecting with the best. Clean and safe to work with a King Grooved Pipe Coupling installation will flow fast and easy.

Most fittings are provided in ductile iron conforming to ASTM A536 Gr. 65-45-12, some styles and sizes are produced of segmentally welded steel or stainless steel (304, 316, 316L). Fittings are painted Red or as an option can be supplied hot-dipped zinc galvanised or epoxy coated. Working pressures of fittings are designed to allow use with any Shurjoint coupling up to the working pressure of the pipe being used.

Grooved-End Pipe Flow Data (Frictional Resistance) Threaded Branch Tees A range of reducing tees with a choice of grooved or threaded branch outlets are also provided to give optimum versatility and ease of installation.

Flow Data/Frictional Resistance (Expressed as equivalent length of straight pipe) The values listed in this table express the frictional resistance of representative fittings as equivalent meters (feet) of straight pipe. For the branch of a tee that is reduced in size, use the value that corresponds to the branch size. For example, the branch value of a 4" x 4" x 3" tee is 3.9 metres (12.8 feet). For fittings not listed in this table, the equivalent length of straight pipe can be estimated from the data provided. For example, the flow resistance of a 22-1/2° elbow is approximately one half that of a 45° elbow.

Mechanical Tee The King System hole-cut mechanical tee provides a fast and easy mid-point branch outlet without welding. First a hole is cut or drilled at the desired outlet location. The mechanical tee is then positioned so that the built-in locating collar fits within the hole. As the housing bolts are tightened the pressure moulded gasket forms a leak-tight seal. Use of the King mechanical tee can eliminate the need for multiple couplings and fittings. Bolts should be tightened equally and evenly. A comprehensive choice of mechanical tees are available in the King range: Class 7721: Threaded outlet, NPT or ISO pipe threads Class 7722: Cut-grooved outlet Class 723: Saddle-Let; Small mechanical tee with threaded outlet, NPT or ISO pipe threads (For Fire protection and low to medium pressure applications).

Bolt Fastening Torque for Mechanical Tees & Crosses, Class 7721, 7722 and Saddle-Let Tee Class 723 All mechanical tees and crosses are designed with a gap between the bolt pads. Do not attempt to bring the bolt pads together (metal-to-metal) when tightening the housings. Excessive torque may result in joint failure. Apply the recommended bolt fastening torque given in the table below. Class 7721/7722 Bolt Size 3/8 Ø 1/2 Ø 5/8 Ø 3/4 Ø

Mechanical Cross Connections A mechanical cross connection can be made by combining two mechanical tee upper housing segments. While the housing segments must be the same size the branch outlets can be of the same or differing sizes and configurations as shown. Caution: Piping practices require that main and branch connections are at a true 90º angle. Also be certain that the locating collar is securely positioned inside the outlet hole before tightening the housing. When mechanical tees or mechanical crosses are used as transition pieces between two runs, the tees or crosses shall be assembled prior to making the branch connections.

Gasket Selection

correct gasket selection is essential. Many factors must be considered when determining the best gasket for the specific application. The type of fluid, temperature, duration and continuity of service are primary factors for selecting the optimum gasket for a specific service. A guide to gasket choice is given below and in the Recommendation List to be found in the Design and Technical Information pamphlet, or if in doubt contact your King distributor. Specify the gasket when ordering and always check that the colour code on the gasket is for the intended service before installation.

Gasket Recommendations

To assure the maximum gasket life for your intended service,

Note: For operating temperatures above 82ºC contact your King distributor for recommendations.

Note The temperature, chemical composition and concentration of the transported product and the in-service environment all affect the durability of gasket compounds over time. Always refer to the Gasket Selection Guide in the Design & Technical Information handbook before selecting the appropriate gasket and grade. King System gaskets are not recommended for certain applications. If in doubt, or when the intended product, service condition or temperature is not listed or recommended contact your King Systems Distributor for guidance. Ensure compatibility of the King Coupling housing or fittings and any related components for the service application prior to use. Notes. Elastometric Gaskets are unsuitable for use directly on rubber lined valves. It is recommended to use the GapSeal™ gasket for dry fire sprinkler systems. All Gasket Styles are available in E, T, O, & L material grades.

Gasket Recommendations

Standard Gasket Standard gaskets are the most commonly used both in rigid and flexible couplings, and are suitable for a wide range of applications in fluid transport.

GapSeal™ Gasket The GapSeal™ gasket has a solid centre leg that fits flush over the adjoining pipe ends. When the coupling is tightened the gasket is compressed over the pipe ends forming a leak-tight seal. The GapSeal™ gasket prevents fluid from entering the gasket cavity. The GapSeal™ gasket is recommended for dry fire sprinkler systems, lined pipe connections and other applications where fluid retention in the pipe line may be hazardous.

Reducing Coupling Gasket The reducing coupling gasket features a unique built-in retainer, that prevents smaller pipe from telescoping into larger pipe during vertical assembly. This gasket also provides generous space for pipe insertion and can eliminate the need for steel plates or washers which can hinder installation.

Flange Gasket The Flange gasket is designed to seal on the pipe end and on the flange. Suitable for the Class 7041 flanges only.

Outlet Coupling Gasket Designed for use with Class C-7 outlet coupling. The gasket seals on the ends of the pipes to be connected and also in the neck of the outlet.

Mechanical Tee Gasket This C-shaped pressure responsive gasket is designed for use with Class 7721 and 7722 mechanical tees for sealing on the curved exterior of the pipe.

The Class 723 Saddle-Let gasket is an integral gasket consisting of a solid cylinder and a curved fringe. This gasket seals on a wide range of pipe surface with permanent compression.

Standard Roll Groove Dimensions

Notes: Column 1:

Nominal pipe size. IPS pipe to ANSI B36.10, ISO pipe to ISO 4200, BS pipe to BS1387 and BS3601 and JIS pipe to JIS G3452.

Column 2:

Pipe outside diameter. Maximum allowable tolerances from square cut ends is 0.030" (0.76mm) for sizes 3/4" through 3"; 0.045" (1.14mm) for 4" through 6"; and 0.060" (1.52mm) for 8" and above.

Column 3:

"A" is the gasket seating surface. For optimum sealing by the gasket, the "A" surface shall be free from any indentations, roll marks or other harmful surface defects such as loose paint, scale, dirt, chips, grease and rust. The "A" surface is measured from the pipe end. Roll-grooving of bevelled end pipe is not recommended as it may cause unacceptable pipe end flare.

Column 4:

"B" is the groove width. The bottom of groove shall be free from loose dirt, chips, rust and or scale. The radii recommended for corners of the roll-groove bottom are 0.06R (1.52mmR) for 3/4" through 1-1/2"; 0.08R (2.03mmR) for 2" through 6"; 0.05R (1.27mm) for 8" and above.

Column 5:

"C" is the groove outside diameter. The C diameters are average values.

Column 6:

"t" is the minimum allowable wall thickness that may be roll-grooved.

Column 7:

"d" is the groove depth; reference only. The groove must be of uniform depth around the full pipe circumference.

Column 8:

This is the maximum allowable pipe end flare diameter.
