THIRD YEAR - FALL SEMESTER 2015 LOCATION AND PROJECT: THE SITE IS IN AL MUWAILEH AREA (SHARJAH-UNITED ARAB EMIRATES). THE AREA IS HOT/DRY AND SANDY. THE PROJECT IS INTENDED TO BE AN INFILL PROJECT THAT INTRODUCES A COMMUNITY CENTER AMID RESIDENTIAL AND COMMERCIAL BUILDINGS. IT CONCENTRATES ON THE WAY IN WHICH A BUILDING RESPONDS TO SITE CULTURALLY IN TERMS OF CONCEPT, PROGRAM DISTRIBUTION, CIRCULATION AND THE QUALITY OF PUBLIC SPACES. APPROACH: IN RESPONSE TO FIXED BUILDING HEIGHT ON SITE, THE PROJECT SERVES AS A TRANSITION FROM URBAN SCALE TO LANDSCAPE THROUGH THE DECREASING HEIGHTS OF THE VOLUMES INTRODUCED. MAIN SHADED PUBLIC SPACE CREATED THAT IS A FOCAL POINT IN THE PROJECT. ALL CIRCULATION ROUTES ARE NARROW AND ARE A REINTERPRETATION/RECREATION OF THE CONCEPT OF A SIKKA TO INTRODUCE BREEZE. A SHADING SCREEN STRUCTURE COVERS THE EXPOSED AREAS OF THE PROJECT. THE PATTERN IS A TRANSFORMATION OF ISLAMIC GEOMETRIC PATTERNS. THE SHADING STRUCTURE IS MADE OF A NUMBER OF GEOMETRIC SHAPES WITH AN INTRICATE PATTERN, SUCH AS THE ISLAMIC PATTERNS TO PROVIDE MAXIMUM SHADE AND IS PLACED IN RESPONSE TO SUN PATH.

SUMMER 2014 | STUDY ABROAD TRIP IN CAMBODIA - SUSTAINABLE DESIGN PROJECT LOCATION AND BRIEF: THE COURSE TOOK PLACE IN CAMBODIA, A COUNTRY IN SOUTHEAST ASIA LOCATED SOUTH OF THAILAND. LAKE TONLE SAP (SITE) IS THE LARGEST FRESH WATER RIVER IN SOUTHEAST ASIA, LOCATED SOUTH OF SIEM REAP (TOURIST CENTER OF CAMBODIA). PROJECT IS A STUDY OF SUSTAINABLE LIVING IN THE CONTEXT OF A FLOATING SHELTER. APPROACH: STARTING WITH A FLOATING SYSTEM, I DECIDED TO USE WOVEN BAMBOO BASKETS FILLED WITH RE-USED PLASTIC BOTTLES BECAUSE BAMBOO IS A CHEAP VERNACULAR MATERIAL, WEAVING IS A VERY COMMON CAMBODIAN PRACTISE AND THE AREA HAS A SEVERE PROBLEM OF PLASTIC BOTTLES POLLUTING THE RIVER. THE ROOF TAKES THE FORM OF A HYPERBOLIC PARABOLA TO DRAIN EXCESS RAIN WATER AND TO MAXIMIZE SUNLIGHT EXPOSURE FOR THE SOLAR CELLS. THE ROOF IS SUPPORTED BY A SERIES OF BAMBOO MEMBERS IN AN ALTERNATING PATTERN OF THICK AND THIN MEMBERS. THE THIN ACT AS SUPPORT AND THE THICK ACCOMMODATE THE VERTICAL HYPROPONICS (WATER BASED PLANT GROWTH) IN THE HOLLOW SPACES WITHIN THE BAMBOO.

FALL 2015 - FOURTH YEAR TEAM PROJECT : ASIL ZUREIGAT AND KHALID ABU SHAHLA PROJECT LOCATION AND BRIEF: THE PROPOSAL IS LOCATED AT THE AMERICAN UNIVERSITY OF SHARJAH, AT A PUBLIC PARK DISTINCT FOR ITS LINE OF PALM TREES. APPROACH: OUR INTENTION WAS TO INTEGRATE THE PALM TREES AND RECREATE THE EXPERIENCE OF THEM THROUGH INTRODUCING A SERIES OF REFLECTIVE OPENINGS ON THE INTERIOR THAT ACT LIKE A PERISCOPE. THROUGH THAT WE BROUGHT THE TALL PALM TREES INTO THE INTERIOR AND AT THE LINE OF VISION OF THE USERS. THE PROPOSED OBJECT/CUBE WAS SKEWED IN PLAN TO DISRUPT THE SYMMTERY OF THE SITE. THE CUBE WAS ARTICULATED IN HIGH CONTRAST TO THE INTERIOR TO SUPPORT THE ELEMENT OF SURPRISE.

L I V E - ARTIST’S HOUSE
SECOND YEAR - SPRING SEMESTER 2014
PROJECT LOCATION AND BRIEF: BASTAKIYA IS INTIALLY AN OLD RESIDENTIAL AREA WITH TRADITIONAL INTROVERT COURTYARD HOUSES THAT NOW HOST A RANGE OF ART GALLERIES, CAFES, HOTELS AND CULTURAL SHOPS. THE PROJECT IS INTENDED TO HOUSE AN ARTIST’S PRIVATE SPACES AND WORK/GALLERY SPACE. THE PROJECT’S MAIN CONCENTRATION WAS ON PROGRAM DISTRIBUTION, SPATIAL ORGANIZATION AND DIFFERENT EXPERIENTIAL QUALITIES OF SPACES. APPROACH: MY APPROACH FOCUSED ON THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN PUBLIC AND PRIVATE SPACES, BUT MAINLY THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN ARTIST WORK/GALLERY AND THE PUBLIC. I ORGANIZED THE SPACES ON AN IRREGULAR GRID CREATING TWO COURTYARDS, ONE IS PRIVATE WHICH MOST PRIVATE SPACES ARE DIRECTED TOWARDS AND THE OTHER IS PUBLIC WHICH THE ARTIST’S WORK/GALLERY SPACE IS DIRECTED TOWARDS AND IS VIEWD/ACCESSED BY THE PUBLIC. BASTAKIYA AT NIGHTTIME APPEARS LIKE A BEAUTIFUL CITY OF STERIOTOMIC/THICK WALLED BUILDINGS THAT CELEBRATE LIGHT IN DIFFERENT WAYS, HENCE WHY I DEPLOYED THE BRICK WALL WITH OPENNINGS IN THE FAÇADE OF MY PROJECT. THE ARRANGMENT OF THE OPENINGS SERVED AS A TOOL TO HIGHLIGHT/DIRECT CIRULATION OF THE PUBLIC. THE THICK WALL ALSO AIDED ME IN MAINTAING/ FOLLOWING THE INTROVERT NATURE OF THE NEIGHBORING BUILDINGS.

BATHE IN LIGHT
SECOND YEAR - SPRING SEMESTER 2014
PROJECT BRIEF: THIS PROJECT REVOLVED AROUND THE EXPERIENTIAL/ATMOSPHERIC QUALITIES OF A BATHING SPACE. APPROACH: MY APPROACH CONCENTRATED ON LIGHT ADMISSION TO CELEBRATE/UTILIZE LIGHT IN DIFFERENT WAYS. I DERIVED THE DESIGN FROM INITIAL IDEA OF OPENINGS; BY WHICH A SERIES OF OPENINGS LEADS TO A MAJOR ONE (HIERARCHY). FIRST ONE AS ENTRANCE, SECOND AS A THRESHOLD BY WHICH LIGHT ENTERS TO HIGHLIGHT OR EMPHASIZE THE DIRECTIONALITY OF THE SPACE, DIRECTING THE USER INTO THE MAIN/BATHING AREA. A LARGE OPENING IN THE BATHING AREA WHICH IS SITUATED AT THE END AND ONLY FULLY VISIBLE WHEN APPROACHED UP CLOSE, IS INTENDED TO ENHANCE THE EXPERIENCE BY TEASING THE USER’S CURIOSITY AT ENTRY.

SECOND YEAR - SPRING SEMESTER 2014
PROJECT BRIEF: THIS PROJECT CONCENTRATED ON EXPLORING WAYS TO DEMATERIALIZE A BRICK WALL BY TESTING THE CAPABILITIES OF THE BRICK THROUGH DEPLOYING DIFFERENT VARIABLES AND MANIPULATING THOSE SOLID RIGID MODULAR UNITS TO CREATE A SMOOTH, SURFACE/FORM THAT IS NOT EXPECTED TO RESULT FROM BRICKS. APPROACH: I CHOSE HEADERS (BRICK ORIENTATION) TO ALLOW A MORE FLEXIBLE DISPLACEMENT RANGE (250MM), SO THAT I CAN SHIFT AND PULL TO MAKE DRASTIC CHANGES AND YET ABIDE BY THE SHIFT/PULL HALF A BRICK RULE, TO GIVE THE WALL THICKNESS AND GUARANTEE STABILITY AND TO ALLOW FOR MORE VARIATION BY HAVING THE CHANCE TO MANIPULATE A LARGER NUMBER OF UNITS. HAVING SETTLED ON A SPECIFIC UNDULATION AFTER SEVERAL EXPLORATIONS, I AIMED AT UTILIZING ITS INWARD CURVATURE YET HIGHLIGHTING IT, HENCE THE ARRANGEMENT OF THE HORIZONTAL BANDS IN THAT MANNER. I DEPLOYED THE VARIABLES OF DISPLACEMENT AND ROTATION.

SECOND YEAR - FALL SEMESTER 2014
PROJECT LOCATION AND BRIEF: THE RETREAT, A GETAWAY NEAR THE SEA AT CYPRUS IS A PROJECT THAT ADDRESSES SPATIAL ORGANIZATION AND UNDERSTANDING/RESPONSE TO LANDSCAPE. APPROACH: AFTER ANALYZING THE SITE, I UTILIZED SPECIFIC ELEMENTS WITHIN THE SITE TO CREATE ZONES THAT HELPED ME IN ORGANIZING THE SPACES IN THE BUILDING IN ADDITION TO DEPLOYING A RHYTHM/GRID. MOREOVER, I EXPLORED THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN THICK/THIN WALLS AND MASS INTERACTION. WHICH LEAD ME TO A DIAGRAM OF TWO INTERLOCKING MASSES THAT ARE EMBRACED/ACCOMMODATED BY A THICK WALL, WHICH SERVES AS A RETAINING WALL IN THE SLOPING/IRREGULAR NATURE OF THE LANDSCAPE. THE THICK WALL’S ORIENTATION/FORM AND THE SEVERAL OPENINGS IN THE FAÇADE DIRECT THE ACTIVITIES/VIEWS WITHIN THE BUILDING TOWARDS THE SEA AND THE EXISTING OLIVE TREE ON SITE. LOUVERS WERE DEPLOYED TO RESPOND TO SOUTHERN/WESTERN LIGHT CONDITIONS.

B E A M A R C H I T E C T U R E C E N T E R - STRUCTURAL STUDY
THIRD YEAR - SPRING SEMESTER 2015
THIS IS THE INITIAL EXPLORATION STAGE THAT IS TO INFORM THE DESIGN OF THE ARCHITECTURE INSTITUTE. IT IS A STUDY OF STRUCTURAL SYSTEMS AND THE DIFFERENT POSSIBLITIES OF CREATING AN ENCLOSURE. I DECIDED TO CONCEPTUALLY STUDY THE BEAM GRID SYSTEM AND I AIMED AT EXPLORING ALL THE DIFFERENT POTENTIALS INHERIT IN THE BEAMS. STARTING WITH THE CONCEPT OF ELEMENTS SPANNING IN TWO DIRECTIONS, I TESTED WAYS IN WHICH THE STRUCTURE COULD START TO SUPPORT ITSELF BY CREATING ITS OWN SUPPORT/COLUMN (STUDY 1), FOLDING DOWN TO MEET THE GROUND (STUDY 2), OR FORMING ITS OWN INDEPENDENT, VOLUMETRIC ENCLOSURE (STUDY 3 + 4). TO TAKE THAT FURTHER, I DECIDED TO EXPLORE THE POSSIBLITY OF USING A ONE DIRECTIONAL SYSTEM THAT INTERACTS WITH THE LANDSCAPE (STUDY 5) TO ALLOW FOR PROGRAMS TO EXIST BELOW AND ABOVE STRUCTURE. FINALLY, MY PROPSOSAL CONSISTED OF ONE DIRECTIONAL ELEMENTS THAT ARE INTRODUCED IN A WAY WHERE THEY START TO COMPLETE THE LANDSCAPE AND BE PART OF IT, IN ADDITION TO CREATING A CAVE-LIKE SPACE BELOW THAT FURTHER EMPHASIZES THE IDEA OF UNDERGROUND INHABITAION.

THIRD YEAR - SPRING SEMESTER 2015
PROJECT LOCATION AND BRIEF: LOCATED IN AL QOUZ, AN INDUSTRIAL AREA IN DUBAI. THE BUILDING INTRODUCED WAS TO HOUSE AN ARCHITECTURAL INSTITUTE AMID THE WAREHOUSE AND GALLERY CONJESTED AREA. APPROACH: GIVEN THE BINNALE CONTEXT AND MY PREVIOUS STUCTURAL STUDIES I AIMED AT RECESSING BUILDING ACTIVITIES BELOW GROUND AND INTRODUCE A LANDSCAPE CONDITION ABOVE. I ACHIEVED THAT THROUGH SPANNING A NUMBER OF ONE DIRECTIONAL REINFORCED CONCRETE BEAMS THAT CURVE DOWNWARDS TO MEET THE GROUND FOR STRUCTURAL SUPPORT. THIS STRUCTURAL DROP IS TRANSLATED ON THE EXTERIOR SURFACE AS TREE POTS AND PUBLIC SPACES. ON THE INTERIOR, THE DROPS DEFINE/DIVIDE SPACES AND GUIDE CIRCULATION THROUGH OUT. GLASS BLOCKS SIT INBETWEEN THE BEAMS TO ALLOW FOR MAXIMUM LIGHT ADMISSION INTO THE SPACE BELOW. THE MAIN DROP IN THE STRUCTURE IS WHERE THE BEAMS PENETRATE THE GROUND TO SYMBOLICALLY MEET THE WATER TABLE, A GESTURE THAT IS MEANT TO EMPHASIZE MY CONCEPT OF INTRODUCING LANDSCAPE INTO THE CITY
