GENERATIVE×DATA-DRIVEN

POSTERS: Creative Coding

A week-long Workshop was organised with RNDR co-founder Edwin Jakobs, also the creator of OPENRNDR, an “open-source framework for creative coders”. The workshop held in 2020 introduced the basics of creative coding and OPENRNDR to our Final Synthesis Design Studio students and challenged them to create a generative and data-driven poster. The goal of the workshop was to introduce designers with creative coding and the idea of using coding as material for personal and creative expression.

PERSPECTIVE OF GOD

We explored the boundaries between languages and ideas, by examining and visualizing the word/idea of “God” and how it is portrayed in 20 different languages.

The aim is to show how every culture is diversified by different entities and how the concept of supreme power transcends language barriers.

INSPIRATION

Decreased focus on face by bring at tention to other details. Distortion. Taking the image apart & rearrange.

PROCESS

Defining a direction to represent the idea of “God” visually, while balanc ing it with the project theme and technical feasibility. The first idea was to slice the images, then distort it with animation, while maintaining the majority of its original integrity.

DESIGN STUDIO:

Milestones of Internet (Phase 1)

From the invention of initial Internet to now, many things happened in this period, but which can be called as milestone? And what are they? This data cum information visualization focuses on the milestones that led to the establishment of the Internet as we know it today, from its inception as an idea in the 1940s until the early 21st Century.

CONCEPT:

The communication goal is to outline all the important milestones in the history of the Internet since 1945 to the present day. This data cum information visualization focuses on the milestones that led to the establishment of the Internet as we know it today, from its inception as an idea in the 1940s until the early 21st Century. The varied and complex social and tech nological transformations we witness today have their roots in the way the Internet has been developed.

More detail description of the project is on this link: https://bit.ly/2UizYLU

Facial Recognition (Phase 2)

In the second phase of the course we learned how to make use of online data to study social and cultural phenomena: in a question-driven process, we designed protocols for data collection and analysis and produce research findings using data visualizations. At the end of the phase we designed an interactive research report.

We designed a report which analyzes a specific issue: Facial Recognition, Different concerns from east to west and its countermeasures. More detail description of the project is on this link: https://bit.ly/3duCTbP

In which terms are people talking about facial recognition on the most popular social media platforms in U.S. (and other English speaking countries), China, Italy and India ?

Which are the most mentioned potential threats caused by facial recognition on the videos from YouTube and Bilibili?

MAIN FINDINGS

Out of 40 videos selected from YouTube and Bilibili, we’ve come up with 7 categories of potential threats by facial recogni tion. Among them, 9 videos are smart phone related, and it also has the highest proportion of views which made the smart phone the most concerned threats caused by facial recognition.

The potential threats caused by face recognition has almost the same concerns on both platforms, but as the technology has been more widely used in people’s daily life in China, it may cause more problems there, such as home security threats associated with the widespread use of smart door locks with face recognition.

DATA VISUALIZATION

DATA PUBLICS: WELCOME TO CITY X (Phase 3)

In the last phase, we turned part of the research carried out in the previous phase into discursive communication artifacts that expose, show or make known the critical aspects of the subjects researched to a specific audience. To this end, the aim is to design communication artifacts that invite the public to reflect and act on the explored subjects. We reflected on the meaning and agency of “the public”, how different groups mobilize around various issues and how data can play a central role in the process of forming publics, and they are also encouraged to recognize the political role that their design prac tices play with technology and how they impact on society.

The result of the phase is an experimental digital artifact that can be used by a specific audience to act on the topic.

City X is an over populated metropolis in China. This research aims to analyze & engage the western public about com plex & controversial social issues of facial recognition through the analysis of data contents by designing a behavioral map of a person’s daily activity line.

Western public knows little about social issues on the complex and controversial topic of facial recognition in China. We (Group 10) designed City X, a behavioral map based on the daily activity of a citizen of an overpopulated chinese metropolis to help to understand this topic.
