Francis calls for ‘tolerant’ society in historic U.S. visit By CHRIS JOHNSON cjohnson@washblade.com Pope Francis called for a “tolerant and inclusive” society on Wednesday during remarks on his first-ever trip to the United States. On a cool autumn morning, Francis called for an inclusive society and rejected discrimination as he addressed an estimated 11,000 attendees at a welcoming ceremony on the South Lawn of the White House.

“Together with their fellow citizens, American Catholics are committed to building a society which is truly tolerant and inclusive, to safeguarding the rights of individuals and communities, and to rejecting every form of unjust discrimination,” Francis said. But Francis tempered his call for inclusion by noting Catholics are concerned the efforts to build an orderly society “respect their deepest concerns and the right to religious liberty.” “That freedom reminds one of America’s most precious possessions,” Francis added. “And, as my brothers, the United

Obama nominates Fanning for high-ranking civilian post By CHRIS JOHNSON cjohnson@washblade.com President Obama has nominated gay Defense Department official Eric Fanning for the position of Army secretary, the White House announced last week. If confirmed by the Senate, Fanning would become the first-ever openly gay person to serve in a Senate-confirmed role as head of the civilian side of a military service. Obama praised Fanning in a statement, saying the official’s years in the Obama administration would be a boon to the Army. “Eric brings many years of proven experience and

exceptional leadership to this new role,” Obama said. “I am grateful for his commitment to our men and women in uniform, and I am confident he will help lead America’s soldiers with distinction. I look forward to working with Eric to keep our Army the very best in the world.” Fanning previously served as head of the civilian side of a military service as acting Air Force secretary, but that wasn’t a Senate-confirmed role and ended after the Senate confirmed Deborah Lee James as Air Force secretary. Currently, Fanning is acting under secretary of the Army, which is an appointment that many observers saw as a stepping stone to a nomination as Army secretary. Obama has already nominated leader of “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” repeal and former Rep. Patrick Murphy as under secretary of the Army to replace Fanning in the CONTINUES ON PAGE 15

Questions surround gay officer’s departure from LGBT police unit Officer Justin Markiewicz, who was honored by D.C.’s Capital Pride organization in June for his exemplary work as a member of the D.C. Police Department’s Gay and Lesbian Liaison Unit, has left the unit and began a new assignment on Tuesday as a patrol officer with the Sixth Police District. Police sources familiar with the GLLU have said Markiewicz was essentially forced out of his GLLU post, even though he submitted an official request to leave the unit. Police spokesperson Gwendolyn Crump said the department granted Markiewicz’s request to return to the Sixth District and is unaware of any issues that would have forced him to Officer JUSTIN MARKIEWICZ has left the leave the GLLU. GLLU. “My time at the GLLU has come to an WASHINGTON BLADE PHOTO BY MICHAEL KEY end,” Markiewicz stated in a Facebook posting on Sept. 18. “I’m sad that my tenure at the GLLU has ended in the way it did but I’m excited to continue the next step in my career,” he wrote in his posting. Markiewicz has told the Blade police department rules prevent him from talking to the media. But two police sources familiar with the GLLU said Markiewicz requested that his indefinite detail to the GLLU be ended and that he be returned to his earlier assignment to the Sixth District because higher-up police officials had created a hostile work environment for him at the GLLU. The sources said Markiewicz was subjected to greater scrutiny and what appeared to others as unfair disciplinary action for alleged minor infractions of rules and procedures after he filed a harassment complaint against Capt. Edward Delgado in August 2014. At the time Delgado served as commander of the Special Liaison Division, which oversees the GLLU and three other police liaison units. Sources said the complaint, which was filed with the department’s Internal Affairs Division, accused Delgado of repeatedly addressing Markiewicz in person and in emails as “Justine.” Markiewicz viewed Delgado’s action as a form of antigay harassment, the sources said. Delgado was transferred to another assignment shortly after the complaint was filed, but spokesperson Crump said police personnel rules prevented the department from disclosing the outcome of the Internal Affairs investigation into Markiewicz’s complaint. According to the sources, Markiewicz’s decision to leave the GLLU was based, in part, on the news that Delgado had recently been reassigned to a position that oversees the GLLU and the other liaison units after he was promoted to the rank of inspector. His new position would place him once again in a role of supervising Markiewicz had Markiewicz remained at the GLLU. “It is difficult to respond to ‘sources familiar with MPD,’” Crump told the Blade in an email on Tuesday. “However, we will state categorically that we will not tolerate retaliation in any form in MPD,” she said. “Officer Markiewicz made a request to end his detail to GLLU and that request was granted,” Crump said, adding that the department is unaware of any retaliation claim. “We encourage anyone who feels that they have been retaliated against to file a complaint through proper channels.” Crump said Police Chief Cathy Lanier has yet to decide whether to assign another officer to replace Markiewicz at the GLLU. Markiewicz’s departure lowers the number of GLLU officers assigned to the unit’s headquarters in Dupont Circle from five to four. Sgt. Jessica Hawkins, who serves as the GLLU’s supervisor, is also considered a member of the unit. “We will continue to ensure trained members are available to assist on GLLUrelated calls,” Crump said. “Hopefully this isn’t goodbye forever and just a see you later,” Markiewicz said in his Facebook posting. “I truly miss seeing everyone. Come visit me east of the river,” he said in referring to the Sixth District’s location in Southeast D.C. LOU CHIBBARO JR.

The words ‘no gay’ were painted on a building multiple times in Silver Spring. WASHINGTON BLADE PHOTO BY LOU CHIBBARO JR.

Silver Spring buildings hit with anti-gay graffiti The words “no gay” appeared more than 50 times Sunday night along the top of a four-foot-high white cement wall that stands in front of a flower bed and shrubbery surrounding an office building in downtown Silver Spring, Md. Tony Eastridge, the property manager for the 12-story upscale building at 1010 Wayne Ave., told the Washington Blade that his maintenance staff has painted over the anti-gay graffiti at least three times over the past year, only to see it reappear shortly after it’s removed. “There’s not a whole lot of crime here,” Eastridge said. “It’s just this kind of stuff, which is unnecessary and uncalled for but unfortunately it happens.” He said one of the building’s security officers called Montgomery County police on Monday to report the graffiti incident. Lt. Jennifer McNeal, deputy commander for the department’s Third District, which includes Silver Spring, said police would open an investigation into the graffiti incident. Among other things, McNeal said police would seek assistance from the public. Unless someone comes forward to help police identify the person or persons responsible for the graffiti it will be difficult for police to close the case, she said. According to McNeal, the scrawling of the graffiti along the top of the wall surrounding the office building has been classified as a form of vandalism. Thomas Petry, a gay Silver Spring resident who has observed the “no gay” graffiti while waiting at a bus stop for his daily commute to work in D.C., said the same person also appears to be writing the words “FBI gay, FBI gay” dozens of times near where he or she writes “no gay, no gay.” “I have no clue what that tie in is,” Petry said. “Maybe they blame the FBI for gays.” Petry said that over the past year or two he has observed similar graffiti appearing on a similar white decorative wall in front of an adjacent office building at 1100 Wayne Ave., which is owned by the same company as the other building, Brandywine Realty Trust. McNeal said anyone with information that could help police identify the person responsible for the graffiti should call the police non-emergency dispatcher’s office at 301-279-8000. LOU CHIBBARO JR.

Hillary Clinton to address HRC

Democratic presidential frontrunner Hillary Clinton will address the Human Rights Campaign on Oct. 3, the LGBT group announced today. Clinton is scheduled to speak to about 800 of HRC’s grassroots leaders, including its board of directors, board of governors, staff and volunteer leaders and supporters ahead of the organization’s National Dinner. “Secretary Clinton is a tremendous advocate for equality and has been a tireless champion for the advancement of LGBT rights as human rights around the globe,” said HRC President Chad Griffin in a statement. “A visionary leader fighting for an America where everyone is treated with equal respect and dignity, regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity, we’re thrilled Secretary Clinton will join us to discuss the challenges ahead in the fight for full federal equality.” HRC’s 19th annual National Dinner will be held later that evening. Speakers for that event are scheduled to be announced Friday. HRC has not yet announced an endorsement in the 2016 presidential race. “HRC will soon be putting staff and resources on the ground in early states, starting with Iowa and New Hampshire, in order to begin organizing and mobilizing members, supporters, and pro-equality voters,” JoDee Winterhof, HRC’s senior vice president for policy and political affairs, told the Blade. Williams’ appointment to att’y gen’l office extended D.C. attorney and lesbian activist Lateefah Williams’ appointment in May as an attorney adviser for the Office of the D.C. Attorney General has been extended to until at least Dec. 31, Williams told the Washington Blade. D.C. Attorney General Karl Racine announced in June that he had named Williams and Ward 8 community activist and former D.C. The release said the appointments were temporary and were scheduled to end on Sept. 30. Williams said she and White were recently informed that their appointments would be extended until at least the end of 2015. Williams, a former president of the Gertrude Stein Democratic Club, the city’s largest LGBT political organization, was among the unsuccessful candidates running against Racine last year in the city’s first election for the newly created post of an elected attorney general. She told members of the Stein Club’s regularly scheduled meeting last week that Racine is deeply committed to protecting the rights of LGBT residents as attorney general. Among other things, he has assigned her to reach out to labor and LGBT organizations as part of her job duties with the office. LOU CHIBBARO JR.

Grosso introduces youth suicide prevention bill D.C. Council member David Grosso (I-At-Large) said he worked with experts on LGBT youth suicide to help him draft a bill he introduced on Tuesday that requires “all school based personnel” in the city’s public school system to receive suicide prevention training. The Youth Suicide Prevention and School Climate Survey Act of 2015 calls on the D.C. Office of the State Superintendent of Education to adopt rules requiring that personnel in all public and charter schools receive at least two hours of suicide prevention, intervention and post-intervention training each year. The legislation also requires all public and charter schools operating in the city to administer “school climate surveys” to all students and school personnel to determine whether an environment exists at a school that may contribute to emotional stress among students that could lead to suicide. Grosso said in a statement that he recognized the need for the legislation following a June 23 hearing by the Council’s Committee on Education in which experts testified about the high rate of suicide attempts by D.C. middle school and high school students, especially LGBT students. He pointed to discussion at the hearing of a 2012 survey conducted by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention that found 33 percent of D.C. LGBT middle school students had attempted suicide in their lifetime. The survey also found that 28 percent of LGBT high school students in D.C. had attempted suicide within the previous year. “Throughout the summer, my office worked with advocates from the D.C. Center [for the LGBT Community], the Trevor Project, the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention and others” in the drafting of his bill, Grosso said. The Trevor Project specializes in LGBT youth suicide prevention. Grosso’s statement says nine of his fellow Council members signed on as cointroducers of the bill. They include Council Chair Phil Mendelson (D-At-Large) and

KENDRA KULIGA, (front right) who performs as Ken Vegas, said she could no longer operate the D.C. Kings. WASHINGTON BLADE FILE PHOTO BY MICHAEL KEY

D.C. Kings give final performance The D.C. Kings, a local drag king troupe, had their final performance Sunday night at the Bier Baron Tavern. Founder Kendra Kuliga (who performs as Ken Vegas) said she could no longer keep the group operating at the same level with other demands on her time. “There were times when I had to really sacrifice work in order to really make the Kings continue,” she said. “Looking at where I am in my life now, I really can’t do that anymore.” Kuliga has her own graphic design business and said she will focus more on that. The Kings, which celebrated their 15th anniversary in February, had about 25-30 active performers over the last year and performed monthly. Vegas credits the late Cheryl Spector with getting D.C. lesbians excited about drag king performance. In 1996, she suggested a drag king contest for the Dyke March event. Kuliga entered and won. Monthly shows started at Chaos after the Kings performed at Capital Pride in 1999. More than 400 kings performed about 500 monthly shows since the group’s inception. For years, the group performed at Phase 1, D.C.’s well-known lesbian nightclub. When it closed for renovations early this year, the Kings started performing elsewhere. Although the bar reopened, Kuliga said it would have been hard to continue there without former Phase 1 manager Angela Lombardi. “She’s the real reason we were able to stay there so long,” Kuliga said. “She always made sure we had our space at the Phase.” Kuliga said turning the group over to another organizer wasn’t feasible. “I built a brand with the Kings … in a very intentional way,” she said. “To give that over to someone else would mean I could never really walk away.” She said she’s confident, though, that local kings will find other performance opportunities. She said most of the kings “were very supportive” of her decision. She will continue to produce other shows and said D.C. has not seen the last of Vegas, her drag alter ego. About 160 people attended last weekend’s final performance, Kuliga said. JOEY DiGUGLIELMO

Walker drops out of 2016 presidential race GOP hopeful second to quit bid for White House By CHRIS JOHNSON cjohnson@washblade.com

AMANDA SIMPSON is the new deputy assistant secretary of defense for operational energy. WASHINGTON BLADE FILE PHOTO BY MICHAEL KEY

Pentagon swears in Amanda Simpson WASHINGTON — The Pentagon on Sept. 18 officially swore in Amanda Simpson as the deputy assistant secretary of defense for operational energy. Simpson, who had previously been the executive director of the U.S. Army Office of Energy Initiatives, is now the highest-ranking openly transgender official in the Obama administration. “With her extraordinary experience and talent, there is no doubt that Deputy Assistant Secretary Simpson will excel in this important position of leadership within the Department of Defense,” said Human Rights Campaign President Chad Griffin in a statement. “As an openly transgender American, her visibility and leadership is also incredibly important, especially as the Department moves to update the outdated regulations that continue to prevent transgender service members from serving openly and honestly. We congratulate her as she takes on this important role serving our great nation.”

New LGBT newspaper to launch in L.A. LOS ANGELES — The founder of New York’s Gay City News has launched a newspaper that will serve Los Angeles’ LGBT community. Troy Masters and Mirror Media Group, which publishes several neighborhood publications in Los Angeles, will publish the first print issue of The Pride LA on Oct. 9. Masters told Gay City News that the publication will be a biweekly newspaper that will cover West Hollywood, Beverly Hills, Hollywood, Silver Lake, Echo Park, downtown Los Angeles and universities that are located in those areas. He said he will publish 20,000 copies of the first issue that will also be available on its website. “Not every publisher has quite as much luck as I have had over 30 years,” Masters told Gay City News, reflecting on the decades he has spent working in LGBT media. “The progress for my media operations and the trajectory of gay rights have both been a sharp upward curve. I am thrilled to have this opportunity in Los Angeles.”

Doritos makes rainbow-colored chips PLANO, Texas — Doritos has announced that it will produce rainbow-colored chips as part of a partnership with the It Gets Better Project. Yahoo News reported Doritos Rainbows are tortilla chips that come in the colors of the Pride flag: green, blue, purple, red and orange. The website said they are only available in its Cool Ranch flavor. Yahoo said the Doritos are only available to those who make a donation of at least $10 to the It Gets Better Project. “There’s nothing bolder than being yourself,” reads the package, according to Yahoo. Frito-Lay, which is based in Texas, makes Doritos and other snack foods.

Republican presidential candidate Scott Walker announced this week he’s discontinuing his bid for the presidency, making him the second candidate to drop out of the 2016 race after Rick Perry also ended his run. After the New York Times first reported Walker was planning to quit his presidential bid, the Wisconsin governor made his exit official during a news conference in Madison, Wis. “Today, I believe that I’m being called to lead by helping to clear the field in this race so that a positive, conservative message can rise to the top of the field,” Walker said. “With this in mind, I will suspend my campaign immediately.” Walker also encouraged other GOP contenders to exit the field “so that the voters can focus on a limited number of candidates who can offer a positive, conservative alternative to the current front-runner,” which as it stand in the polls is real estate mogul and TV personality Donald Trump. Concluding his speech by thanking family and supporters, Walker said, “Most of all, I want to thank God. I want to thank God for his abundant grace. Win or lose, it has always been more than enough.” Upon his entry into the race in July, Walker held the lead among Republicans in Iowa likely to vote in the caucuses. But after Trump rose in popularity and Walker was saddled with bad reviews for his performances at the first two Republican presidential debates, the Wisconsin governor’s support bottomed out. A CNN/ORC poll published on Sunday indicated he was polling at 0 percent among the presidential candidates. Although he hails from a moderate state in the Midwest, Walker had some of the most anti-LGBT positions of any Republican candidate in the presidential race. Even before the U.S. Supreme Court ruled in favor of same-sex marriage nationwide, Walker said he supports a U.S. constitutional amendment against the decision that would return the marriage issue to the states. “As a result of this decision, the only alternative left for the American people is to support an amendment to the U.S. Constitution to reaffirm the ability of the states to continue to define marriage,” Walker said at the time of the ruling.

Gov. SCOTT WALKER (R-Wis.) has quit his presidential bid. WASHINGTON BLADE FILE PHOTO BY MICHAEL KEY

Chances of passage are unlikely, but Walker promised to uphold religious freedom in a way seen to enable antiLGBT discrimination. In addition to endorsing the First Amendment Defense Act, federal religious freedom legislation seeking to prohibit government action against opponents of same-sex marriage, Walker said his administration would act unilaterally to uphold religious liberty. “That means making sure that we uphold the Constitution, which says you have the freedom of religion,” Walker said. “Not freedom from religion, the freedom of religion. And that means, I’ll just speak about it, our Justice Department, our I.R.S. and others out there, will uphold that.” But Walker made his biggest splash in terms of anti-LGBT views when, right before the Boy Scouts lifted its ban on gay adults, the candidate said he supports the gay ban because it “protected children.” Amid outcry from LGBT advocates, including the Human Rights Campaign, which called on him to apologize for suggesting gay men are pedophiles, Walker recast his statement in subsequent media interviews, saying he didn’t mean “physical protection,” but protecting Boy Scouts from “political and media discussion.” Walker also said he “wouldn’t change” military policy when asked about the Obama administration’s plan to end the regulation prohibiting openly transgender service in the U.S. armed forces.

Campaign seeks national park to honor Stonewall Riots Nadler announces plans days before debut of film on uprising By CHRIS JOHNSON cjohnson@washblade.com More than 40 years ago, after witnessing the 1969 Stonewall riots in New York City, lesbian activist Martha Shelley led the coordination of a parade observing the oneyear anniversary of the historic event. That subsequent demonstration on Christopher Street started the annual tradition of Pride parades in support of LGBT rights. Now she’s working with a new campaign calling for designation of a national park site recognizing the initial uprising that was key to starting the modern LGBT movement. “It’s important for people to know the history, and instead of being a shameful secret and being the kind of people who get destroyed really for being who they are, we ought to be celebrated for who we are,” Shelley said. “And it’s important for people to understand change has happened, those kinds of changes, because ordinary people protest, because ordinary people are out in the street.” U.S. Rep. Jerrold Nadler (D-N.Y.) and U.S. Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand (D-N.Y.) announced this week the new initiative at the Stonewall Inn in New York City. Joined by LGBT advocates and community allies, they called for designation of a national park site days before the debut of the “Stonewall” motion picture depicting the uprising for which they’re seeking recognition. In an interview with the Washington Blade, Nadler said the designation of a national monument recognizing the riots — which began after patrons of the Stonewall Inn fought back against police during a raid — is important for many reasons. “The National Park Service, through national monuments, through national battlefields, all kinds of national things, illustrates the story of this country,” Nadler said. “It’s important to expand the diversity of this story presented by the National Park Service, in this case, to present the story of the struggle for civil rights of LGBT Americans. There is nothing in the National Park System that deals with this, and that’s a huge omission in terms of the history of this country, the history of this struggle and the ongoing struggle for human rights.” Of the more than 400 national parks in America, two-thirds are dedicated to sites of cultural and historic significance. The Women’s Rights National Historical Park in Seneca Falls, N.Y., tells the story of the first Women’s Rights Convention held there in July 1848. In Alabama, the Selma

to Montgomery National Historic Trail traces the march led by black activists in their struggle for civil rights. Drawing on President Obama’s invocation of Selma, Seneca Falls and Stonewall in his second inaugural address, Nadler said the designation of a site for Stonewall would enable the National Park Service to “tell the whole story” of the civil rights movement. Among the groups coordinating the campaign is the National Parks Conservation Association, a non-profit that advocates for the national parks and the National Park Service. Cortney Worrall, Northeast regional director for the National Parks Conservation Association, said her organization about a year ago started to hold informal discussions with New York’s LGBT community about designating a national monument for the Stonewall uprising. “Over several months, the overwhelming feedback that we received was ‘Please do!’” Worrall said. “It was just overwhelmingly positive and pointed us in the direction that this could be a national campaign to establish the first LGBT unit within the park system to commemorate the birth of the modern LGBT civil rights movement.” Other supporters of the campaign include Gillibrand (D-N.Y.), all but one member of New York City’s delegation to the U.S. House, 13 state senators, 36 state Assembly members, five city council members as well as the Human Rights Campaign, the American Civil Liberties Union and Log Cabin Republicans. The U.S. government already designated the privately owned Stonewall Inn in 2000 as a national historic landmark, but that’s considered a lowertier designation given to 2,500 sites throughout the country. Last year, the Department of the Interior announced it was undertaking

a theme study to examine ways to incorporate LGBT stories into the National Park Service. The new effort to have a national monument dedicated to the Stonewall Riots shares a similar goal, but is separate and distinct from the agency-led initiative. Worrall identified two ways to designate a national park. The formal way is through legislation passed by Congress; the other is for the president under the authority of a 1906 law known as the Antiquities Act to designate a national monument. “It’s a designation of national monument, but…for all intents and purposes, it is a national park,” Worrall said. “He would be designating it as a national park. And he does not require congressional approval for this at all; this is something that he has the administrative authority to do.” The White House didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment on whether President Obama would be willing to designate a national monument for the Stonewall demonstrations. Jessica Kershaw, a spokesperson for the Department of the Interior, said the Obama administration isn’t in a position to comment on the proposal. “That should not diminish the department’s commitment to capturing and telling a broader story of our nation and more stories reflective of all Americans and their experience, as the park service approaches its centennial in the next year,” Kershaw said. “That commitment is exemplified in the service’s current work underway to research and collect these stories and sites through its ongoing LGBT theme study.” Worrall said those behind the campaign have informed the White House about the initiative, but “we’ve not heard anything other than that they’re interested in hearing more.”

As for the legislative route, Nadler said he plans to soon introduce a bill that would designate a national park in honor of the Stonewall uprising. Still, the New York lawmaker said in the GOP-controlled Congress he’s “not terribly hopeful that my Republican colleagues will rush to celebrate the freedom that was fought for at Stonewall.” It’s the fear of a potential Republican administration in 2017 that’s prompting Nadler to call for Obama to act before his second term is over. Nadler said he’s “confident” Obama will take action when land ownership issues regarding the site are resolved. “If, God forbid, a Republican happens to be elected president, and this hasn’t been already, one doesn’t have confidence in the fact that Log Cabin Republicans are supporting this means that Donald Trump, or [Scott] Walker, or whoever it might be would do so,” Nadler said. “We hope it’s before then.” One site advocates are pushing for designation as a historic site to commemorate the Stonewall uprising is Christopher Park, the area across the street from the Stonewall Inn where the rioting began. But the president can only designate a national monument on federal property and Christopher Park is owned by New York City. Advocates pushing for the recognition are seeking to have New York City Parks & Recreation transfer ownership of the park to the federal government. Nadler said the process for such a transfer requires involvement from New York City and a meeting of the local community board to meet, adding, “I hope and believe it will not be an insurmountable issue.” “We don’t know exactly what would be designated, but, for example, the park in front of the Stonewall Inn is owned by the city, so somehow, and we’d have to work that out,” Nadler said. “It has to become at least legally federal land, and the National Park Service is working with New York City to figure out how to meet the federal legal requirements so the president can make the designation.” Among those to speak at the launch for the new campaign is New York City Department of Parks & Recreation Commissioner Mitchell Silver. “Memorializing the historic events that occurred at Stonewall goes a long way toward validating the struggle, and sacrifice of self, that many in the LGBTQ community made then and continue to make now,” Silver said in a statement. “Let’s make history again, nearly 50 years later.” The New York City Department of Parks & Recreation didn’t respond to a followup email on whether that means the city would be open to transferring Christopher Park to the federal government.

LGBT Catholics among those welcoming pope to D.C. CONTINUED FROM PAGE 01

States Bishops, have reminded us, all are called to be vigilant, precisely as good citizens, to preserve and defend that freedom from everything that would threaten or compromise it.” Although Francis never explicitly mentioned LGBT issues in his address, his call for inclusion is consistent with his reputation for espousing more moderate views on LGBT rights. Although the Catholic Church remains opposed to same-sex marriage, Francis in a widely

publicized interview said of gay priests, “Who am I to judge?” The pope addressed other issues more explicitly. As immigration remains a hot topic in American politics and Republican presidential candidates have embraced extreme positions on the issue, Francis began his speech by noting his own immigration status in his country. “As a son of an immigrant family, I am happy to be a guest in this country, which was largely built by such families,” Francis said. Francis also during his speech discussed efforts to address climate

Motorcade passes HRC building Pope Francis’ motorcade passed the Human Rights Campaign building in Northwest D.C. on Wednesday as the pontiff made his way to the nearby Cathedral of St. Matthew the Apostle. Members of Dignity Washington were among the hundreds of people who gathered outside the building at the corner of Rhode Island Avenue and 17th Street, N.W., in hopes they would have a chance to see the pope. Dignity Washington members held a banner that read, “Pope Francis: The spirit is speaking through us,” with a reference to LGBT Catholics. Others wore blue T-shirts that asked the pontiff whether he would “welcome us home.” A large banner urging the Vatican to welcome LGBT Catholics back into the church hung from the side of the HRC building. “We’re welcoming the pope,” Larry Ranly of Dignity Washington told the Washington Blade before Francis arrived at St. Matthew’s Cathedral. “I would ask the pope to welcome us.” Dan Anderson of D.C. and his fiancé, Jim Rinefierd, walked to HRC after attending the White House ceremony during which President Obama officially welcomed Francis to the U.S. “The energy was pretty amazing,” Anderson told the Blade. “Everybody was just so pleased to be there knowing what was coming.” Anderson added Francis is “changing the world as pope instead of just living in the old dogma.” A handful of members of the Westboro Baptist Church gathered on the corner of Connecticut Avenue and M Street, N.W., near St. Matthew’s Cathedral on Wednesday to protest Francis. They appeared to have left the area by the time the pontiff and his motorcade arrived. Francis was scheduled to pray with U.S. bishops before celebrating Mass at the Basilica of the Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in Northeast Washington. The pontiff on Thursday was slated to speak to members of Congress and visit St. Patrick’s Catholic Church and Catholic Charities of the Archbishop of Washington before traveling to New York. change and the opening of relations between the United States and Cuba. In a speech welcoming Francis, President Obama touted the positive impact of the Catholic Church around the world as well as his unique qualities as pope. “You remind us that in the eyes of God our measure as individuals, and our measure as a society, is not determined by wealth or power or station or celebrity, but by how well we hew to scripture’s call to lift up the poor and the marginalized to stand up for justice and against inequality, and to ensure that every human being is able to live in dignity because we are all made in the image of God,” Obama said. In the meeting that followed between Obama and Francis in the Oval Office, the president presented the pope with a dove sculpture that incorporates an original armature bar from the Statue of Liberty and a key from the Maryland home of Elizabeth Ann Seton, the first native-born American to be declared a saint. The South Lawn was packed with the 11,000 attendees who waved miniature American flags and flags of Vatican City. Many of the male attendees were

dressed in suits and ties as women were in their Sunday best for the occasion. Some of the high-profile LGBT attendees included Rev. Gene Robinson, the first openly gay Episcopal bishop; gay Catholic blogger Aaron Ledesma; and Margie Winter, a Philadelphia-area teacher fired from a Catholic school in 2007 over her same-sex marriage. Although the Obama administration was criticized for inviting LGBT activists to the ceremony by an anonymous Vatican official in a Wall Street Journal article (a report later disputed by Vatican adviser Father Thomas Rosica) and Republican presidential candidate Mike Huckabee, the White House has shrugged off the criticism. After the ceremony, Ledesma told the Blade “it was an honor” to take part in the ceremony along with other members of the LGBT community. “Pope Francis’ speech was powerful,” Ledesma said. “He talked about respecting all individuals and the marginalized. He said we are called to show compassion and fight against injustice and discrimination. He’s leading with inclusion. Pope Francis is the Pope of Inclusion.”

Cardinal turns down invitation to attend Dignity Mass Official says gay Catholic group doesn’t support church teachings

By LOU CHIBBARO JR. lchibbaro@washblade.com Cardinal Donald Wuerl, who heads the Catholic Archdiocese of Washington, has turned down an invitation by the LGBT Catholic group Dignity Washington to attend a Sunday Mass with the group at St. Margaret’s Episcopal Church near Dupont Circle. An official with the Archdiocese informed Dignity Washington in a Sept. 3 letter of Wuerl’s decision not to join the group at its weekly Mass or at its social gathering following the Mass. Dignity released the letter to the media for the first time after its Sept. 20 Sunday Mass. The letter came as Dignity members in Washington and across the country were hopeful that Pope Francis’s visit to the United States, including the nation’s capital this week, would nudge the Catholic Church in the United States into taking a more welcoming stance toward the LGBT community that many believe Francis has taken. “Is it correct that your community is founded upon the assertion that the Catholic Church’s teaching on chastity is inconsistent with her affirmation of the dignity of all?” William W. Gorman, the Archdiocese’s Associate Moderator of the Curia, asked Dignity President Daniel Barutta in his letter announcing Wurel’s decision not to attend a Dignity Mass or social gathering. “The Church’s teaching magisterium does not accept this assertion, and attendance at a gathering such as the one you propose could symbolically communicate the opposite, thereby causing confusion,” Gorman said in his letter. Gorman was referring to the longstanding teaching by the Catholic Church that sexual relations are only allowed for heterosexual couples joined in a marriage recognized by the church and that those not joined in such a marriage must remain chaste or celibate. “The response from the letter inviting him to come to either our social or our mass is very disappointing,” Barutta told the Blade. “We took him at his word that he was trying to be more open minded and walk with us and be with the community at large like Pope Francis is trying to be,” said Barutta. “What we got back is pretty much what we’ve been hearing,” Barutta said. “What we’ve been hearing for the last 25 years was we don’t promote chastity. We’re not really Catholic and we’re not valid and therefore he’s not coming to meet with us.” Added Barutta, “So the Pope is saying

one thing and the Archdiocese is saying another. And quite frankly, we’re very disappointed.” In his letter inviting Wuerl to attend a Dignity Mass or social gathering, Barutta noted that the Cardinal stated at a recent news conference that he admired Pope Francis’s call for more inclusiveness. Barutta quoted Wuerl as stating that Francis “keeps saying, ‘Go out. Go out and meet people where they are. And in that encounter, walk with them, accompany them.’” “In this new spirit of openness which has energized the Church we all love,

we invite you to join Dignity Washington (D.C.’s largest LGBT Catholic group) as we celebrate a Catholic Mass at St. Margaret’s Episcopal Church,” Barutta wrote. “We love the Scriptures, and our Liturgy, and the Faith tradition that has shaped our lives,” Barutta told Wuerl in his invitation. “Indeed, although we have been exiled from Catholic buildings and rejected by Catholic leaders because we want to live our sexuality openly and without apologies, we are still Catholic and we still look to you for leadership,” he said. “That is why we invite you, in the words

of Jesus to his first disciples, to ‘Come and see’ (John 1:39).” In his letter informing Barutta of Wuerl’s decision to decline the invitation, Gorman suggested that not all gay Catholics agree with Dignity’s position. “There are many persons who live with same-sex attraction and who believe that the Church’s teaching on chastity leads us to better understand our God-given dignity and its relationship to the meaning of sexuality and love,” Gorman wrote. “Many persons have been treated badly by others in the body of Christ, and this I sincerely regret,” Gorman said in his letter. “However, every Catholic has the responsibility to seek communion with the Church and to believe what the Church believes.” Cardinal Wuerl was among the first to greet Pope Francis, along with President Obama, as Francis arrived by plane on Sept. 22 at Joint Base Andrews in Maryland in his first-ever visit to the United States. Barutta noted that Wuerl lives near St. Margaret’s Church and sometimes walks past the church as Dignity members are arriving for Sunday evening Mass. He said that if Wuerl has ruled out attending a Dignity mass, members of the group would be happy to meet with him at another location. “If he wants to meet at a coffee shop or at his office, at the Cathedral, at the Basilica, we’d love to meet with him,” Barutta said. “We’ll meet him on the Metro if we have to.”

White House shrugs off criticism over papal invites White House Press Secretary Josh Earnest shrugged off on Monday criticisms of the Obama administration for its selection of attendees — which include LGBT activists — for the Wednesday address from Pope Francis II. “I will say there was no theological test that was administered prior to giving out tickets to stand on the South Lawn Wednesday morning,” Earnest said in response to a question from CNN. The administration invited more than 15,000 people to witness Francis’ address at the White House on Wednesday. Among the guests were Rev. Gene Robinson, the first openly gay bishop in the Episcopal Church, gay Catholic blogger Aaron Ledesma and Sister Simone Campbell, a nun who supports abortion rights. But in a report in the Wall Street Journal, an anonymous senior Vatican official expressed concern about the attendees, saying their participation could be seen as an endorsement by Pope Francis. Earnest pointed to comments made by other senior Vatican officials who expressed excitement about the pope’s visit to the White House, including Vatican adviser Father Thomas Rosica, who on “Fox News Sunday” denied the Wall Street Journal report. “I think that he can speak more directly to the perspective of Pope Francis when it comes to the ceremony, but I can tell you that the White House planned a ceremony that would ensure that Pope Francis would receive the kind of warm welcome that reflects the kind of warm feelings that 300 million Americans have about him and his leadership,” Earnest said. Jumping in on the criticism over the invites was anti-LGBT Republican presidential candidate Mike Huckabee, who took to Twitter to criticize the invites and called them an attack on Christianity. Huckabee tweeted: “Classless decision by @POTUS to transform @Pontifex visit into a politicized cattle call is an insult to millions of Catholics #PopeInUS” He continued, “@POTUS show of disrespect for @Pontifex is a new low for an admin that will go down as most anti-Christian in American history … Why is it that @POTUS goes to extremes to accommodate Muslim terrorists but shows nothing but disdain for Christians?” Earnest was succinct when asked whether he had a reaction to Huckabee’s criticisms. “I don’t,” Earnest said. Huckabee assails Obama’s choice for Army secretary CONTINUED FROM PAGE 01

Army’s No. 2 civilian position. Fanning has served in various roles at the Pentagon over the course of the Obama administration, including deputy under secretary of the Navy, under secretary of the Air Force, acting secretary of the Air Force, Pentagon chief of staff and acting under secretary of the Army. A former board member of the Gay & Lesbian Victory Fund, Fanning is no stranger to LGBT rights. In a 2013 interview with the Washington Blade, Fanning said he supports openly transgender service and, as has now come to pass, adding sexual orientation to the list of protected classes under the Military Equal Opportunity policy. Matthew Thorn, interim executive director of OutServe-SLDN, said he’s “thrilled” with Fanning’s nomination to the No. 1 civilian post in the Army. “Having an openly gay individual in highlevel positions within the Department of Defense helps to set the tone at the top and provides an opportunity to bring better understanding about both the shared and the unique needs of LGBT individuals in the military and their families,” Thorn said. Also praising Fanning was Defense Secretary Ashton Carter, who said nominating the official as Army secretary is an “excellent choice.” “Eric served as my first chief of staff at the Pentagon, and it has been a privilege over the course of my career to work alongside him and watch him develop into one of our country’s most knowledgeable, dedicated, and experienced public servants,” Carter said. “I know he will strengthen our Army, build on its best traditions, and prepare our ground forces to confront a new generation of challenges.”

Huckabee attacks Fanning Meanwhile, Republican presidential candidate Mike Huckabee invoked the ire of LGBT advocates after criticizing the nomination of Fanning — but each of the GOP presidential candidates remains silent on the attack. The Washington Blade contacted each of the campaigns of the 15 candidates running for president (as well as the campaign of Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker before he dropped out of the race), but days after Huckabee’s remarks none of the contenders responded to the request for comment. After the White House announced President Obama nominated Fanning for the No. 1 civilian position in the Army, Huckabee took Obama to task in a Facebook post, saying the choice was an attempt at “appeasing America’s homosexuals.” “Veterans suicide is out-of-control and

military readiness is dangerously low, yet Obama is so obsessed with pandering to liberal interest groups he’s nominated an openly gay civilian to run the Army,” Huckabee said. “Homosexuality is not a job qualification.” LGBT advocates that have called on presidential candidates to repudiate Huckabee’s remarks include the Human Rights Campaign and OutServe-SLDN. Thorn also called on Huckabee to apologize for his comments. “This nomination is not about pandering, it is about appointing an individual who will best serve the most technologically developed Army the world has ever known,” Thorn said. “Our lack of military readiness and veterans suicides, that Mr. Huckabee claims are not being honored in this appointment, are not policies of Eric’s or the Obama administration. They were left over from eight years of President George W. Bush’s presidency. We, as an electorate, have yet to hear any plans or policies from any of the Republican presidential candidates to address the concerns highlighted by Mr. Huckabee.” TJ Helmstetter, a spokesperson for the Democratic National Committee, said the silence from the Republican candidates suggests they agree with Huckabee’s attack on Fanning. “With his attack on Secretary-designate Fanning, Mike Huckabee is essentially saying that you can’t be both gay and

qualified to lead,” Helmstetter said. “We in the LGBT community are used to extreme ignorance coming from Mike Huckabee. But his comments are more dangerous when they go unchallenged by his Republican colleagues running for president. By failing to distance themselves from anti-LGBT sentiment, they are condoning it.” Just recently, one Republican candidate has stood with Huckabee on an anti-LGBT position. During the second Republican presidential debate, former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush said he agrees with Huckabee’s support for Rowan County Clerk Kim Davis’ refusal to issue marriage licenses after the Supreme Court’s ruling on same-sex marriage. Huckabee appeared with Davis on stage at a rally when she was released from jail after being found in contempt of court. Candidates seeking the Democratic nomination, however, took the opportunity to criticize Huckabee. Former Maryland Gov. Martin O’Malley said in a statement to the Washington Blade that Huckabee’s comments amount to bigotry. “President Obama has nominated Eric Fanning, a patriotic and dedicated person fully capable of serving as secretary of the Army,” O’Malley said. “I believe Gov. Huckabee’s bigoted rant against this nominee is not in the interest of our nation or our national security.”

Former Rhode Island Gov. Lincoln Chafee expressed a similar sentiment in a statement to the Blade, saying “the law” forbids anti-gay bias. “Enough of the bigotry Mr. Huckabee,” Chafee said. “Eric Fanning should be evaluated solely for his qualifications, record and vision for the job. The law forbids discrimination on the basis of his race, color, religion, creed, sex, or sexual orientation.” Harvard law professor Lawrence Lessig turned Huckabee’s own words against the candidate in another statement to the Blade. “I think the ‘obsession’ is Huckabee’s,” Lessig said. “It is time for him to let the hate go, and allow citizens to serve their country as citizens. President Obama is showing leadership. We should all support him openly.” A spokesperson for the campaign of former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton deferred to a tweet from her campaign saying the Fanning nomination was “a proud step forward.” A follow-up email on whether the campaign had anything to say about Huckabee’s attack wasn’t returned. Not responding to a request for comment on the Democratic side were the campaigns of U.S. Sen. Bernard Sanders (I-Vt.) and former U.S. Sen. Jim Webb of Virginia. The White House also hasn’t responded to a request for comment on the remarks.

The Club Hippo, a mainstay in Baltimore’s LGBT community for 43 years, has announced its closing dates. The last night for the dance club portion of the bar will be Saturday, Sept. 26 while the last drag show will take place on Sunday, Sept. 27. The last night for the Saloon and Karaoke bars will be Saturday, Oct. 3. The following statement was posted on the Hippo’s Facebook page: “From all of us at The Hippo....the closing dates are at hand. We would like to thank each and every one of you who has visited and supported us for 43 years. We hope to see many of you in these last final weeks ahead. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts.” The Hippo announced its closing in May to coincide with the retirement of its owner Chuck Bowers. Bowers will continue to own the building but it will be converted into a CVS drugstore. Members of Baltimore’s LGBT community knew of the eventual closing scheduled for later this year but some expressed surprise and disappointment that it was taking place this soon. “Well that was abrupt,” said Paul Hummel, a one-time employee at the Hippo. “I’m hoping I can come by one last time, but this didn’t leave a lot of notice. Such a bummer.” Bowers declined to discuss the reason for the sooner-than-expected closing.

In an effort to determine how many transgender individuals reside in Maryland, the Transgender Response Team (TRT) has launched a census project called “Count Me In, Maryland.” TRT is a stakeholders’ group convened by the Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene. According to the project’s website, countmeinmaryland.com, “Anyone who currently lives in Maryland and who identifies as a gender different from the one they were assigned at birth is eligible to participate.” “Count Me In, Maryland” is not a needs assessment, says the website, and it does not seek sensitive or personal information. The goal of TRT is “to focus on efforts that: reduce the stigma and oppression that fuel risk and risk-taking behavior; facilitate power-sharing between consumers and providers; and promote solution-based dialogues and actions.” Data collected will be used to provide information to help increase and improve health and wellness services for transgender Marylanders. The results will be updated and reported every three months on the website and at community meetings indicating how the data are being translated into practical applications to benefit transgender Marylanders. Daraprim maker says price will be reduced WASHINGTON — The pharmaceutical company boss under fire for increasing the price of the drug Daraprim more than 5,000 percent this week said he would lower the cost of the life-saving medication, NBC News reports. Martin Shkreli did not say what the new price would be. No word on when the price will be announced. He told NBC News the decision came to outrage expressed this week when the company announced it was changing the price from $13.50 to $750 per pill. “Yes it is absolutely a reaction — there were mistakes made with respect to helping people understand why MARTIN SHKRELI we took this action, I think that it makes sense to lower relented and said he would reduce the price the price in response to the anger that was felt by of Daraprim. people,” Shkreli, 32, told NBC News. Turing Pharmaceuticals of New York bought the drug from Impax Laboratories in August for $55 million and raised the price. Shkreli said Tuesday the price would be lowered to allow the company to break even or make a smaller profit. Daraprim fights toxoplasmosis. The infection is particularly dangerous for people who have weakened immune systems, like AIDS patients, as well as for pregnant women, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Shkreli, the founder and CEO of Turing, had said the money from the increase would be used to develop better treatment for toxoplasmosis that have fewer side effects. He told NBC News Tuesday that drugs like Daraprim will not exist if small companies cannot get a return on their investment. “It’s very easy to see a large drug price increase and say ‘Gosh, those people must be gouging.’ But when you find out that the company is not really making any money, what does that mean?” Shkreli said in a phone interview with NBC News Tuesday. “It’s very hard stuff to understand.” The Human Rights Campaign was among the critics of the increase. “Your greed in raising the single-pill price from less than $15 to more than $750 is unconscionable,” HRC President Chad Griffin wrote in a public letter to Shkreli.

Russia’s HIV patients struggle to get treatment MOSCOW — When Russian health care officials announced last week they would start replacing foreign HIV medication with drugs produced in Russia, patients’ rights advocates were quick to point out that HIV patients have complained that domestic drugs are ineffective and have undesirable side effects. Patients themselves say that drug shortages are a far bigger problem for them, the Moscow Times reports. Medical experts and NGO activists agree that the move over to domestic medication — announced as part of the import substitution campaign sweeping Russia — pales in comparison with frequent drug deficits all over the country that force patients to wait for months for their treatment, the Times article said. “The number of HIV patients [in Russia] is increasing faster than the funds to finance treatment, and the worsening economic situation is contributing to it too, so the lack of funds is an issue (in drug shortages),” said Vadim Pokrovsky, head of the Moscow-based Federal Center for Fighting AIDS and Russia’s most renowned specialist in the matter, to the Moscow Times. The number of registered cases grows every year and is very likely to reach one million by 2016, Pokrovsky told the Moscow Times in written comments.

Argentina ends gay blood donation ban NEW YORK — Argentina ended its ban on gay and bisexual men donating blood on Tuesday, a decision that may have an impact on countries like the U.S. that still restrict blood donations from men who admit same-sex relationships, Time reports. Health Minister Daniel Gollán said the decision was “scientifically and technically accurate,” Slate reports. Gay rights advocates in the country have been advocating for a law change for 15 years. The U.S. ban remains in effect for any men who’ve had sex with another man after 1977.

Appeasing the ignorati GOP sinks in brainlessness and bile

RICHARD J. ROSENDALL is a writer and activist. Reach him at rrosendall@starpower.net.

Any sufficiently shameless and ambitious politician knows that a smoothly delivered fabrication on live television impresses millions more than will read the next day’s refutations. Take Carly Fiorina (please), the neverquite-senator from California with her bag of imaginary business triumphs, whose numbers shot up after her well-delivered zingers at last week’s Republican presidential debate. Never mind that repeated investigations of Benghazi have turned up no sinister actions by Hillary Clinton. Never mind that several state investigations have turned up no wrongdoing by Planned Parenthood. Carly has to appease the Ignorati (as I dub the right-wing base), so she touts a nonexistent fetus-harvesting video. Just as her $40 million golden parachute cushioned the impact of being sacked by Hewlett Packard, her bump in the polls softened the blow of being called a liar. The facts don’t matter any more. Donald Trump pushes a discredited link between vaccines and autism. Mike Huckabee says the Dred Scott decision remains in effect despite the citizenship clause of the 14th Amend-

ment. Ben Carson says no Muslim should be president, ignoring the Constitution’s Article VI prohibition against religious tests for public office. Marco Rubio dubiously claims North Korea has the capacity to hit America with a nuclear weapon. Jeb Bush says, “My brother kept us safe,” as if 9/11 never happened. Bobby Jindal (in the “undercard” debate) raises the specter of an influx of terrorists by falsely saying Obama wants to “short-circuit the vetting process” for Syrian refugees. If one lie flops, you move on to the next. At a rally on Sept. 17, Trump, a leading Obama “birther,” responded amicably to a man’s call to “get rid of” American Muslims. He answered the resulting furor with, “I love the Muslims.” This mad march of misinformation is more than mere coffee chat fodder. Spreading baseless fears of vaccines endangers the public health. Portraying America as weak promotes wasteful military spending while our domestic infrastructure crumbles. Stoking Islamophobia endangers lives at home and strains relations abroad. As any 12-year-old on a playground can tell you, assuming he hasn’t been shot by police, discriminatory profiling does not only target adults. In Texas, as the world now knows, police refused to admit they were wrong despite having arrested 14-year-old Ahmed Mohamed for bringing a clock to school even though they knew it wasn’t a bomb. They tried to cover themselves by calling it a “hoax bomb,” though he never said it was anything but a clock. Some suggested that anything with wires and a clock looks like a bomb. Saying “I don’t know what it is, so it must be a bomb” is true in the same sense as when you’re unable to identify a disk-shaped

cloud over a mountain and conclude that it must be an alien spaceship. This is called the argument from ignorance. There are too many examples already in this campaign, from Huckabee’s exhibitionistic constitutional cluelessness to Trump’s endless bullshitting. Confidently mouthing urban legends no more makes you an expert in climate science or medicine than playing Neil deGrasse Tyson makes you an astrophysicist. Profiling disproportionately targets people of color. This harms the America we have, in defense of one that exists only in the minds of people clinging desperately to unmerited privilege. As Edward R. Murrow said in 1954, “We will not be driven by fear into an age of unreason if we dig deep into our history and our doctrine, and remember that we are not descended from fearful men.” The brown-skinned teenager who tinkers with clocks today might make an engineering breakthrough in a decade or two. We cannot afford to squander the gifts and crush the hopes of a growing portion of our population, as we do when we encourage reflexive bias. If we are going to demonize young Ahmed, we might as well revise the security warning on the Metro to “See something, say something, learn nothing.” The GOP’s pageant of know-nothings will not end any time soon. We who know better must do more than resist joining the rabble; we must raise our voices. Once stirred up, a mob is hard to quell and can cause mayhem beyond the imaginings of the instigators. This toilet needs a plunger. Copyright © 2015 by Richard J. Rosendall. All rights reserved.

Let’s do the Time Warp again! ‘Rocky Horror Picture Show’ turns 40

KATHI WOLFE, a writer and poet, is a regular contributor to the Blade.

Unfurl the toilet paper! Throw the toast! Get out the fishnet stockings and gloves! I’ve got something to say, damnit, Janet! It’s the 40th anniversary of the cult movie “The Rocky Horror Picture Show.” “Rocky,” the phenom embraced by aficionados since its release in 1975 is just out on Blu-ray – in time for Halloween. The film starring Barry Bostwick and Susan Sarandon as Brad and Janet, the virginal young couple whose lives are forever changed after a night spent with the cross-dressing, mad-scientist Dr. FrankN-Furter (Tim Curry), has been featured in movies and TV shows from “Fame” to “The Perks of Being a Wallflower” to “Glee.” “Rocky,” perhaps, the longest-running feature film, is still shown in some

theaters. The Library of Congress, added the movie to the U.S. National Film Registry in 2005. In our fragmented culture, there aren’t many things loved by people of different stripes and generations throughout their lives. Yet, “Rocky” fans include everyone from first responders to government workers to college students to hipsters to boomers. I’d bet Rocky’s birth tank that you remember where you were when you first saw Frank-N-Furter (the “sweet,” alien “transvestite”), Magenta, Columbia and the other denizens of Transylvania. I first saw “Rocky Horror” with friends in New York in the late 1970s. What I remember most is our giddiness from not only the joint we’d shared before entering the theater but from the campy singing, dancing, gender-bending, free-spirited sexuality and punk costumes on screen. (Though, we likely wouldn’t have called it “gender-bending” or “punk” then.) Here was a movie that, along with lovingly parodying the Hollywood sci-fi and horror flicks that so many of us adored, encouraged sexuality and difference. Less than a decade after Stonewall, when only recently being gay had been considered a mental illness, we were watching Transylvanians of all genders and permutations joyously doing the

“time warp” in “Rocky Horror.” True, we were far from being anywhere near as innocent as Brad and Janet. Even so, it was transforming to see the couple enjoying sex with Frank-N-Furter without fear of

thinks, my friend George, who worked for the first Bush administration told me, “I saw it in Washington, D.C. in the afternoon with a few other people. We laughed and sang the whole time! It was great!”

Long before ‘Transparent’ or ‘Modern Family,’ ‘Rocky Horror’ increased our culture’s comfort with sexuality and gender non-conformity. sodomy laws or other repercussions. At a time when women were often expected to be sexually passive, it was freeing to see Janet boldly seeking sex. In an era when coming out took guts, it was heartening to hear Dr. Frank-N-Furter exhort us to “Don’t dream it, be it!” In the decades since its release, “Rocky Horror” has been life changing for generations. A documentary about the film’s impact on its fans “Rocky Horror Saved My Life” is in post-production. The movie is “a place for people who are a little outside of the mainstream to meet, and it’s a rite of passage. It’s a family film,” Lou Adler, the executive producer of “Rocky Horror,” told Rolling Stone. “Rocky Horror” is people being themselves – not giving a damn what anyone

Long before “Transparent” or “Modern Family,” “The Rocky Horror Picture Show” increased our culture’s comfort with sexuality and gender non-conformity. My 70-something pal John hadn’t met many LGBT people before he saw “Rocky Horror” when he was in his 30s. “But, I loved it! Frank- N-Furter was so likable, so non-threatening,” he said. “One day, I was driving with friends near Olney, Md. The car was stopped for at a long traffic light. We got out and did the time-warp dance!” Has “Rocky Horror” gotten old, I recently asked a 30-year-old friend, who lives in New York. “No,” she said, “it’s still fun! I saw it two years ago at midnight. People were still dressing up!” Happy anniversary, Rocky Horror! Let’s do the time-warp, again!

State Fair in Syracuse goes gay — and other signs of progress Fall reunions a reminder of how far we’ve come

KATE CLINTON is a longtime humorist and regular Blade contributor.

This fall I returned to Syracuse for a weekend of reunions: a family reunion and my 50th Catholic high school reunion. Cosmically there was a lot going on in my house of reunion. I made plans to meet up with an old friend who was a year behind me in school. She asked, “Can’t you come early and go to the Fair with me? Thursday is Gay Day at the State Fair. Melissa Etheridge is headlining.”

“Gay Day at the State Fair.” Said in an un-ironic way. It was like hearing, “5 to 4 in favor of marriage equality,” but somehow more visceral and incredible. My hometown, Syracuse, is the site of the New York State Fair. We Salt City folks are quite

Midway. When my first customer ordered a hot dog and “a Bud,” I had absolutely no idea what ‘a Bud’ was and got fired. Empire State LGBTs had been gathering informally at the Fair for years, but Aug. 27, 2015 was the first formally rec-

Right now, in an otherwise mad, mean world, I feel whole and hopeful. proud to be the host city. Everybody goes. In my early years, I went to The Fair with my mother who favored the quilt shows, the baking and canning contests. I wanted to go to the tractor pull. In my teens, after a deliriously sexy swoon of a summer at a Catholic girls camp, I went with my counselor gal pals to the Fairgrounds. To prolong the delirium of being together, we all lied about our ages and got jobs. I got a job at a hot dog stand on the

ognized, governor-proclaimed, widely advertised Pride Day. The morning started with a ceremony raising the Rainbow Flag over the Main Gate. The LGBT info booth was at the center of the Center of Progress Building. Melissa rocked the main stage for three hours for 17,000 people. I wish I’d been there. I had my own Gay Day at my 50th high school reunion. I banged from one vaguely familiar older face to another as if I were in a pinball machine. I tried to flush out an-

other kindred LGBT soul. Tilt! Sadly, no luck. My former classmates, most still practicing Catholics, all good people, all white and all retired — teachers, nurses, cops — greeted me warmly. Who am I to judge? The Gay Days continued at my family reunion. There it is no longer about coming out. After the initial tsuris, my siblings have come around. Each has had his own journey. Some were fine from the start. Some shunned me. Some were guilttripped by their kids. I opened more of my life to them. It takes time. All have been won over by my dear partner, now the official deejay of the family reunion dance party, a joyful, sweaty multi-generational jitterbugging, shagging, voguing, bhangra mash-up. Right now, in an otherwise mad, mean world, I feel whole and hopeful. I am happy to be out in my family and now to my old classmates. Sad to find no one else. Amazed that in my old stomping grounds, where once gay people marched in the small Pride parade with paper bags on their heads, there are now Gay Days.

The changing nature of our ongoing battles Taking on the Vatican, Kim Davis and other LGBT critics

PETER ROSENSTEIN is a longtime LGBT rights and Democratic Party activist.

Eric Fanning and Xavier High School make us proud; Corrine Brown (D-Fla.) needs to explain herself; the Vatican needs to come into the 21st century; and Kim Davis belongs in jail. The LGBT community was the focus of a series of headlines last week. In Kentucky it was marriage licenses, “Lawyer for Deputy Clerk: Kim Davis May Be Violating the Judge’s Order.” In New York City it was Xavier High School: “Room in Catholic School for Gay-Straight Alliance.” Then President Obama invited gay and transgender Catholics to the

White House welcoming reception for Pope Francis. The Washington Post editorialized about the Vatican raising objections about this, fearing the Pope would be pictured with these guests indicating a support that isn’t there. Then, “President Nominates first Openly Gay Army Secretary.” Finally, Brown changes her vote and says no to same-sex spouses getting benefits in the military. Despite the Kim Davis’s of the world and the Vatican’s official position, acceptance of LGBT people is moving forward and quickly in many cases. The Kim Davis’s of the world will eventually be hoisted on their own petard. Her claim of her religious beliefs being undermined by doing her job are specious to say the least. Now she is violating the agreement that got her out of jail, promising not to interfere with her deputies who are giving out marriage licenses to same-sex couples. She is requiring them to use different forms and one deputy has gone to court saying this is interference. The view of a legal scholar I spoke with suggested the best outcome would be for the judge to order the office to go back to using the original form with her name on it, she then fires the deputy,

and the judge throws her ass back in jail. A good idea all around. But I take heart learning what is going on at Xavier High School in New York City. A Roman Catholic school that has a Gay-Straight Alliance demonstrates how thinking is being transformed in both the community at-large and in some of the Catholic Church. The column in the New York Times reads, “This is a reflection of a moderating tone from the church.” “Students and their advisors met in a physics classroom and on the walls hung a crucifix and posters of Einstein and Homer Simpson. Two flags flanked the door. One was the American Standard, while the other was a rainbow banner of gay pride.” President Obama continues to ensure openly LGBT people are part of every event at the White House and are appointed to positions at the highest levels of government. Only a few years after winning the fight to end “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell,” he nominated an openly gay man, Eric Fanning, to be his Secretary of the Army. Fanning is supremely qualified for the job and it appears whether or not he is confirmed by a Republican Senate, it will have more to do with the politics of all Obama

nominations rather than the fact he is gay. As the LGBT community moves into the future and toward gaining acceptance, there will be many bumps along the road. There will be legal issues to overcome and cultural issues that will be even harder and take much longer. Organizations like HRC and the Task Force, fighting for our civil and human rights, will be fighting different battles from the ones they fought in the past. We will have to reinforce our coalitions with allies in order to move forward. The Washington Blade recently published a column about an issue we will see more and more often: More than one member of the LGBT community running for the same political office. In this case, it was for mayor of Palm Springs. It is an issue the Gay and Lesbian Victory Fund will have to grapple with when issuing its endorsements and it most likely should cause them to look again at their criteria for supporting candidates more closely. We will continue to make progress in attaining our full civil and human rights if we stick together and commit the needed resources of time and money to the battles ahead. VIEWPOINT

Gay Millennials can embrace Rubio’s vision Now we need jobs and rising incomes to solidify our marriages By GABINO CUEVAS Progress. There are several definitions for the word but in the political context it often applies as “the development of an individual or society in a direction considered more beneficial than and superior to the previous level.” Today we have a president that Millennials wildly supported in 2008, but who appears to be managing America’s economic decline. In an era in which many Millennials are cynical because they face stubborn unemployment or underemployment, many are looking for youthful alternatives that do not represent the past, be it Democratic or Republican. I believe that youthful leader is Marco Rubio, who is compared by some to John F. Kennedy. Of all the candidates currently running in the crowded Republican primary field, Rubio stands out as a man who demonstrates the enduring power of American exceptionalism and is capable of effectively communicating conservative principles to younger voters. He is also Hispanic and

will dramatically broaden his party’s outreach to Hispanics and Latinos. If the GOP does not significantly increase its share of the growing Hispanic vote, as well as its share of the gay and Millennial vote, it will suffer defeats in 2016 and beyond. His campaign has emphasized the need for America to meet the challenges of the fiercely competitive new global economy to ignite a “New American Century.” Gay Millennials are well aware that they are now forced to compete with educated workers across the globe. They are more receptive to a candidate who is confident in our ability to prosper in the 21st century rather than those who encourage a class warfare mentality based on the assumption that we can only succeed at the expense of others. Millennials may be ready to wise up and realize our outdated tax code that penalizes middle class gay entrepreneurs, just as much as it penalizes all U.S. employers and fosters Millennial under employment. As Rubio puts it, “these ideas don’t move us forward, these ideas move us backward.” This is the sort of new candor that Millennials are seeking in a president. On other issues, Rubio is equally responsive to the concerns of younger voters. The plan he proposed to simplify the

tax code would unleash the potential of LGBT workers and business owners when government eliminates the artificial burdens placed on them by misguided policies and counterproductive regulations. Rubio and increasingly many gay Millennials recognize that “when our economy is growing and thriving, employment isn’t a zero-sum game.” For gay Millennials who went into debt so they could graduate with degrees that ultimately failed to lead to jobs, Rubio’s proposal to require that college faculty advisers publish the average salaries of the majors they recommend would go a long way toward insuring new Millennials make a profoundly better choice of their major field of study. And this all goes to the essence of what “progress” actually is. It means confronting and remedying problems head-on with new strategies, not pushing them further down the road. Having seen them in practice while growing up, more and more Millennials are beginning to recognize that to continue fashionable Democratic policies of expanding government power with its scheduled 2016 $20 trillion debt has more in common with Einstein’s definition of insanity than with the dictionary definition of progress. Their way leads

only to underachievement and a lethargic economy. We can only counter their outdated ideas with better newer ideas. As Rubio aptly describes it, “Most people who have ever lived were trapped by the circumstances of their birth, destined to live the life their parents had. But America is different. Here, we are the children and grandchildren of people who refused to accept this.” If we do that, we’ll have achieved true progress, and that includes gay people. While gay Millennials are predominantly Democratic, often one-third and sometimes more of gay voters quietly vote with the GOP. And they have good reason to take a second look at the GOP, given the Supreme Court decision legalizing gay marriage, for it was George W. Bush’s former solicitor general, Ted Olsen, who won the California case against Prop 8 (the ruling was made by a gay Republican judge). Yet, make no mistake, Millennials need long-term meaningful jobs and rising incomes to solidify their marriages, be they gay or straight. Let’s be all we can be. Yes, America can! GABINO CUEVAS is the former 2008 Entrepreneur of the Year winner from Hispanic Business magazine in the Heavy Industry category and serves on the board of Log Cabin Republicans of Miami.

Demand a record of excellence when looking for a Realtor.

A commitment to excellence in all things By DAVID BEDIZ Dr. Martin Luther King once said, “If a man is called to be a street sweeper… he should sweep streets so well that all… will pause to say ‘here lived a great street sweeper who did his job well.’” King was talking about excellence. Walt Disney had a similar quote: “If it’s worth doing, it’s worth doing well.” Everyone from Aristotle to Abe Lincoln has opined on the value of striving for something greater. Whether it is just because you—and the world—deserve more than mere mediocrity (“Mediocrity will never do. You are capable of something better” –Gordon B. Hinckley) or as a means of survival in a competitive world (“Change before you have to” –Jack Welch), excellence is hailed as the goal to strive for in work and life. I don’t read a lot of self-help books, leadership books or build-a-betterbusiness books, but any time I do, I am struck by a central theme in all of them. Any book you read that purports to help your work, your life or both, will, subtly or not so subtly, try changing your attitude first. Perhaps it will help you see things from a different perspective. Take a deep breath. Step back. Try to see the forest and not the trees. Once your view changes of the landscape ahead of you, you’ll sometimes see the problems you face in a different way, and your attitude about the smaller things will change along the way. Sometimes those problems fade in importance, and some will come to the fore. But in all these experiences, you’ll probably see that being the best, or at least doing your best, is more important than all the small dayto-day problems that seem to consume all our time and mental energy. Rising above the quotidian annoyances to strive for excellence, and perhaps to achieve success, is difficult. It’s not easy

to think big when so many little things are calling for your attention. After all, the bills must be paid. But those who seek excellence, and certainly those who find it, do so by taking time to change their perspective, and then to attack problems and set goals with a more productive (usually a more positive) attitude. That’s the kind of thing that I strive for every day. In the grand scheme of things, real estate and street sweeping aren’t much different. Neither task is likely to change the world, and in a thousand years I have about as much chance of being remembered as a street sweeper. But what if I worry more about the world around me, and try to change it for the better while I’m here? As Dr. King said, “If I cannot do great things, I can do small things in a great way.” Approaching any challenge with a deliberate goal of being the best I possibly can be is what helps me do real estate with excellence. When choosing an agent to help you with the largest investment you may have ever owned—perhaps the largest one you may ever own—wouldn’t you want someone involved that has that macro vision of the process, of your satisfaction, of your mutual success? There are lots of agents out there. More than 10,000 licensees in Washington, D.C. alone. And there are even a lot of us with a focus on excellence. But with all the hustle and bustle of daily life, it is not always so apparent who has that commitment to quality, to constant improvement, and to exceeding your expectations. Take a moment for yourself. Extract yourself from your daily annoyances. Gain a new perspective, and then evaluate what you need in your next transaction. If excellence is important to you, demand it when you consider your next Realtor. DAVID BEDIZ is an 11-year veteran Realtor and the founder of the 12-agent Bediz Group, LLC team. He currently serves on the boards of directors of GCAAR and DCAR, the local and state level associations of Realtors, and is proud to be a nominee for Best of Gay DC for the third year in a row. from the experts at Exmark to get the most benefits from aeration: • Timing: Ideally, aeration should take place during times of active growth to help with recovery. Avoid aeration during times of heat stress or times preceding dormancy. It’s typically best to aerate cool season grasses in the spring or fall, while with warm season grasses, it’s best to aerate in late spring or early fall. • Proper equipment: Use gear that meets the needs of your lawn. For example, Exmark offers a 30-inch StandOn aerator that makes quick work of even large properties with the ability to easily maneuver around landscape features. • Follow-up: After aeration, it’s a good idea to water the lawn, as well as a good time to apply fertilizer or overseed if needed. Be careful not to apply a preemergent if you plan to overseed, however, as it will prevent the new seed from growing. Don’t let this important, but often overlooked, lawn care task escape your attention this season. At the ideal time for your lawn, either take it upon yourself or hire a professional to give your grass a better chance at thriving.

When speaking to an HVAC contractor, be prepared to ask the right questions. (Photo courtesy Emerson Climate Technologies via StatePoint)

(StatePoint) — Not all home upgrades require a ton of research. But for more complicated repairs and replacements, being informed can help you make better decisions. For example, replacing your home’s HVAC system is one thing you want to get right, as a good decision can benefit both your comfort and pocketbook for years to come. “Before talking to a contractor, homeowners should be prepared with questions,” says Karl Zellmer, vice president of air conditioning at Emerson Climate Technologies. According to Zellmer, here are some important factors to consider and questions to discuss with your contractor: • What size or capacity system is right for my home? • What is the expected life span of my current system? • How much should I plan to pay for a new system if mine has to be replaced? • How much will my monthly energy bill be reduced with a new system? Are there ways to reduce it even more? • Will the new system reliably produce the desired air temperature and humidity

levels evenly throughout my home? • What maintenance will the new system require? Will it automatically notify me when it needs servicing or repair? • What are the contractor’s qualifications? Can they provide referrals from previous customers? • Is my system environmentallyfriendly? Are there any government and utility rebates available for buying certain “high efficiency” equipment? • Am I going to be adequately covered by a warranty and how long will I be covered? • Am I purchasing the most up-to-date technology available? For example, will I be able to remotely monitor and control my home’s climate via the internet or a mobile device? To view the results from recent homeowner research, and to learn more about what type of system might be best for your home, free resources are available at ac-heatingconnect.com. If you own an older, problem-prone system, it might be time to skip the repairs and opt for a replacement instead. No matter your priorities, long-term reliability, modest operating costs and great year-round performance are key features to seek in your next HVAC system.

JOSEPH IRELAND How long have you been out and who was the hardest person to tell? Since I was 18. Everyone was very accepting. WASHINGTON BLADE PHOTO BY MICHAEL KEY

By JOEY DiGULIELMO joeyd@washblade.com Joseph Ireland, a native of the D.C. region, started his company JDIreland Interior Architecture & Design 15 years ago specializing in residential interiors with a “classic, modern, chic” aesthetic. “We specialize in fully customized high-end interiors that are a direct reflection of the homeowner,” he says. “The client’s taste is our springboard to the unique space designed to reflect them, not us.” Look for him next month in Home & Design magazine in which a waterfront property he recently finished will be featured. His work is also online at jdireland.com. He charges by the hour. Ireland says the gay cliché associated with designers doesn’t bother him. “I’m not the stereotype you might see on Bravo!,” he says. The biggest mistake he sees repeatedly? Furniture not proportioned to the scale of the room, he says. Ireland is married to Richard Jordan and they live at 16th and U streets, N.W. Ireland says design is both his work and hobby. He also enjoys travel.

Changes coming for loan applications, closing on new homes By TIM SAVOY Applying for a loan and closing on a new home is about to change in October. In November 2013, the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) combined the Real Estate Settlement Procedures Act (RESPA) and Truth in Lending Act (TILA) disclosures and regulations. This means that all settlements for real estate in the United States must now use new closing disclosure forms. Initially, the new TRID forms and procedures were to be implemented on Aug. 1, 2015. However, because of the vast amount of changes to the lender industry, these changes were delayed to begin on Oct. 3. This date is now considered final, and these changes will be coming. Homeowners who have been through the buying and selling process will see some changes at the closing table starting with any purchases originating after Oct. 3. A new Closing Disclosure and Loan Estimate will replace the HUD1, the settlement statement used in all real estate transactions. This new Closing Disclosure will be more detailed and give the purchaser a much more in-depth look at the costs associated with both their loan and closing costs. As the CFPB has stated, the goal is for the purchaser to, “know before you owe.” In addition to new forms, there will also be changes to the closing process and review of the approved loan. For example, starting on Oct. 3, all closing forms must be ready three days prior to closing. This is a drastic difference from our current practice and home purchases can be closed once the final HUD-1 statement is produced (normally two days prior to settlement). Because of these changes, most

Realtors, lenders, and title companies are now recommending that buyers get everything needed to the lender at least seven days before closing. This way, the three-day review period will not provide any surprises. What are the implications of these new rules and regulations? As David Toaff, loan officer with First Home Mortgage, describes it, consumers should expect a slightly longer time from contract to close. Whereas the traditional contract period is about 30 days, TRID changes will likely push the contract period to 45 days because of the increase in review period after loan approval. This number of days may shorten eventually to 40 days, but the first months of implementing new forms and review periods will need a conservative number of days to close. For buyers who are interested in purchasing a home over the next month, there should certainly be an understanding of being prepared in the loan process. These procedures are certainly not a surprise to the industry, but they will take time to adjust for all parties. Sellers who are putting their homes on the market this fall should understand how these changes might affect their sale. While the D.C. market is primarily seller focused, offers that include financing may automatically be geared toward a 45-day close to protect the buyer. In all, these new TRID guidelines are in place to protect the purchaser from predatory lending. This initial rollout of new forms and rules will certainly take time for the market to respond, but as lenders, buyers, sellers, and agents better understand them, the market will adjust accordingly. TIM SAVOY is a real estate agent with Coldwell Banker Residential Brokerage, Dupont Circle. Reach him at 202-400-0534 or at timothy. savoy@cbmove.com. David Toaff is a loan officer with First Home Mortgage. Reach him at 610-348-3772 or at dtoaff@firthome.com.

JONNY BEAUCHAMP, left, as Ray, and VLAD ALEXIS as Cong in ‘Stonewall.’ Although the filmmakers have been accused of ‘whitewashing’ history, it does include several Latino and African-American gender-nonconforming characters.

Director says he’s proud of film, despite activist backlash By JOEY DiGUGLIELMO joeyd@washblade.com When the world got its first look at the “Stonewall” trailer in August, reaction was swift and withering with some even calling for LGBT people to boycott the film, a dramatization of the 1969 New York riots that were a turning point for gay rights. The film was assailed, from snarky social media posts (“Ah yes! That

wonderful point in gay history where super models got really angry”) to outright vitriol. Pat Cordova-Goff, who identifies as a “transwomyn of color” is calling for a boycott with the Gay-Straight Alliance Network. “Do not throw money at the capitalistic industry that fails to recognize true s/heros. Do not support a film that erases our history. Do not watch ‘Stonewall,’” she writes. The beefs are essentially that historical events have been “whitewashed,” that trans characters are pushed to the sidelines and played by non-trans actors and that, as Tim Teeman wrote for the

Daily Beast, “everyone appears to have been bused in from laughably predictable central casting.” The events are centered around a fictional character named Danny, a white Midwestern teen kicked out of his home for being gay. Ironically, few have pointed out that Jeremy Irvine, the 25-year-old “War Horse” actor who plays him, is straight. Irvine, director Roland Emmerich and writer Jon Robin Baitz (all white, the latter two gay) have defended the film, which opens on Friday, Sept. 25 (it’s screening at area theaters such as Landmark E Street Cinema, ArcLight Bethesda, Angelika Film

Center and more). They counter that most of the criticism is based on the trailer, not the film itself, that the true events of the riots are shrouded in myth and that any dramatization uses artistic license to varying degrees. Legendary gay writer Larry Kramer defended the filmmakers. Emmerich, widely known for helming major films like “Independence Day” (1996), “Godzilla” (1998) and the Mel Gibson vehicle “The Patriot” (2000), is already at work on his next project. The German-born auteur spoke to the Blade CONTINUES ON PAGE 42

‘Silverbration’ festivities scheduled for early October By MARIAH COOPER CAMP Rehoboth celebrates 25 years of service to the community with its Silverbration weekend on Friday, Oct. 9 and Sunday, Oct. 11. Oct. 9 will be the Silver Gala at Nassau Valley Vineyards (32165 Winery Way, Lewes, Del.) from 7-11 p.m. and will feature illusionist Christopher Peterson. The Silver Block Party will be Oct. 11 on the second block of Baltimore Avenue and will run from noon-4 p.m. Murray Archibald, board president of the LGBT community center that serves the Rehoboth Beach community, says the planning committee has been working on this anniversary weekend since last year. Despite having other big events to work on, such as Sundance, their biggest event festival of the year over Labor Day weekend, they were able to organize the two events. According to Archibald, the gala will have a more traditional vibe with a band and

dancing. There will also be food served from several restaurants in the area. Peterson will emcee the night. General admission tickets for the gala are $100. General admission tickets with seating are $125. Gala table sponsor tickets are $1,500. The block party is new for CAMP Rehoboth. Plans for vendors, food trucks and a stage in front of CAMP Rehoboth for different performances have well been underway. Archibald says the city has allowed CAMP Rehoboth to close off the second block of Baltimore Avenue, something they usually don’t do, for the party. Admission to the block party is free but there is a suggested $10 donation. The gala and block party are the two celebration events planned for the weekend but CAMP Rehoboth will remain open throughout that weekend for visitors to stop by. Archibald is amazed to see the growth CAMP Rehoboth has made in the past 25 years. “It’s grown from a little tiny room where people said, ‘You’re crazy. What are you doing,’ to the full community center and being able to serve the community the

way we do,” Archibald says. “Not just the community but all of Delaware. Even if something gay related is going on in the news anywhere, we get a call.” He thinks that all of the hard work CAMP Rehoboth has put into helping the community has caused the same community to want to celebrate with them. “Part of our goal was to be a bridge to the whole community when we started it and I think the community is celebrating,” Archibald says. Although CAMP Rehoboth has established itself as a staple in the LGBT Delaware community, it goes far

beyond just servicing that community. Archibald says that CAMP Rehoboth’s close proximity to D.C., Baltimore and Philadelphia has allowed it to spread its vision beyond the resort town. Archibald also says that despite originally serving only the LGBT community it has now become an important part of Delaware as whole. “People gay and straight turn to CAMP Rehoboth for things,” Archibald says. “It used to strike us as funny, but it doesn’t anymore. We’re visible, we’re downtown, we’re involved in things. It really shows that we’re involved at all levels of the community.”

PHOTO BY LONNIE TAGUE; COURTESY OF GALA HISPANIC THEATRE

MABEL DEL POZA, center, as the title character in ‘Yerma.’ Gala’s smart production never veers into melodrama.

Work of gay ’30s playwright revived at Gala By PATRICK FOLLIARD Federico García Lorca didn’t stand a chance. When Franco’s fascist troops rose to power during the Spanish Civil War, there was no place for a freethinking, gay dramatist — internationally acclaimed and critical of the opposition — in their nationalist plan. So in August of 1936, one of Franco’s death squads abducted Lorca and shot him to death. He was 38. And though Lorca’s body was never recovered, his works endure. His most important plays are tragedies featuring strong and complex women: “Blood Wedding” (1933), “Yerma” (1934) and “The House of Bernarda Alba” (1936). All set in the Spanish countryside, they’re collectively dubbed Lorca’s rural trilogy. And now Gala Hispanic Theatre mounts a searing, modern-feeling “Yerma” (translates as “Barren”) helmed by out Spanish director José Luis Arellano García. The title character longs for a baby but can’t conceive. She blames her husband whom she rightly assumes doesn’t want children, a desire that’s anathema to both her and the surrounding villagers: “A woman from the country who doesn’t bear children is as useless as a handful of thorns — even sinful!” Director García makes us feel Yerma’s unrelenting pain. Even during intermission, a miserable family dinner plays out on stage. Yerma is collapsed at the kitchen table while her husband and his two shrouded sisters eat in silence except for the clanging of metal spoons against ceramic bowls. It’s a stylized production that somehow never crosses over to melodrama. The script and set add to the intensity. In his world premier adaptation of Lorca’s luminously poetic text, Fernando J. Lopez, a Spanish writer who is gay, effectively pares a larger cast down to its five essential characters (not counting the sisters who appear briefly): Yerma; her husband, Juan; Victor, a lusty shepherd;

new mother Maria; and Dolores, an amalgam older woman character. Scenic designer Sylvia de Marta serves up a stark set of corrugated metal and stainless steel. A swathe of dirt (in which the actors sometimes flail and roll) borders the front of the stage. The set is lit with alternating soft and harsh fluorescent lighting. The actors are costumed in contemporary, very casual summer clothes. Mabel del Pozo’s Yerma is passionate, definitely earthy, and generally miserable. Though not exactly clawing, her hands are never far from her loins. Yerma wants a baby badly. She communes with the unborn son she desires, sometimes speaking aloud to him. She believes his addition to the household would fix her otherwise unhappy life. There are two men in Yerma’s life — Juan (played by out actor Eric Robledo) the cold husband that her father chose for her. By day he works the land and at night counts his money. Yerma is too much for Juan. He’d prefer a contented wife who remained quietly in the home and didn’t nag him about lovemaking and ways to conceive. Then there is Victor (Iker Lastra), a family friend with whom Yerma steals charged but chaste moments. The players are well cast. With a dancer’s poise, Natalia Miranda-Guzmán assays Yerma’s friend Maria, an ambivalent young mother who so easily conceived but was never eager to start a family. A sad moment comes when Yerma poignantly and enviously notes that Maria’s new baby has his mother’s eyes. And Dolores, a freewheeling mother many times over is played by Luz Nicolás who unbeknownst to last Friday’s audience was performing on a newly broken foot. “Yerma” is performed in Spanish with gracefully translated, easy-to-read English surtitles. ‘YERMA’ Through Oct. 4 Gala Hispanic Theatre 3333 14th St. NW $20-42. 202- 234-7174 Galatheatre.org

Be prepared to vogue on Friday, Sept. 25 as Reel Affirmations holds a birthday party for the iconic film “Paris Is Burning.” The 1990 documentary by Jennie Livingston chronicles the ball culture in New York City in the late 1980s. Against a backdrop of cheering crowds, witty commentary and blazing house music, gay and trans ball “children” compete in an evolving array of categories that recognize both realness and fantasy. The movie combines footage of the fabulous balls and interviews with the house mothers and rising icons of the house culture, capturing how new families and a defiant queer culture were formed in the face of poverty and oppression. The fabulous House Mother Rayceen Pendarvis of D.C.’s Team Rayceen, who will preside over Reel Affirmation’s miniball, says, “’Paris Is Burning’ allowed mainstream society an opportunity to have a glimpse into the lives of people who were black, Latin, gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender at a time when not only were such people discriminated against, but our very existence was rarely acknowledged.” Pendarvis says the film also, “examined intersectionality long before that term was coined. It spoke volumes to the determination and willpower of a group of people who against many odds created a safe space where not only were they tolerated and accepted, they were celebrated and free to express themselves.” Cast member James Goode, who appears as the clever master of ceremonies under the name Junior Labeija, also notes that the balls have deep roots in African-American history.

He says the late Paris Dupree, the Queen of Hearts, who was the originator and creator of the Paris Is Burning Ball, made him realize that, “the ballroom community was the next generation that stemmed from the Harlem Renaissance.” The Reel Affirmations mini-ball will start at 6:30 p.m. at the office of the Human Rights Campaign on Rhode Island Ave., N.W. Filmgoers will enter on the red carpet and can be photographed in front of the banners for both Reel Affirmations and the Testing Makes Us Stronger campaign. The screening will start at 7 p.m., followed by a panel discussion and book signing The panel discussion will include cast members Sol William Pendavis and Freddie Pendavis. Sol was one of the first people to bring the Military category to the ballroom (his fierce performance is one of the unexpected highlights of the movie). He says appearing in the movie, “Gave me a more positive view on life and where I could go. I realized the sky was the limit.” He reminds audiences to approach the film with an open mind and an open heart and to appreciate the unity of the ball family that made so much progress possible. The cast members will be joined by Lucas Hilderbrand, author of “Paris Is Burning: A Queer Film Classic,” an excellent guide to the making of the film and some of the controversies that have arisen since it was released. Lucas notes that the movie has remained timely and looks forward to a great conversation with the Reel Affirmations audience. CONTINUES AT WASHINGTONBLADE.COM ‘PARIS IS BURNING’ SCREENING AND MINI-BALL Friday, Sept. 25 Human Rights Campaign 1640 Rhode Island Ave., N.W. $25 reelaffirmations.org

IT’S SOME KIND OF

WONDERFUL!

MICHAEL RADKOWSKY, Psy.D. is a licensed psychologist who works with gay individuals and couples in D.C. He can be found online at personalgrowthzone.com. All identifying information has been changed for reasons of confidentiality. Have a question? Send it to Michael@personalgrowthzone.com.

DEAR MICHAEL, My boyfriend and I are getting married next June. We’re very excited. We’ve been a couple for four years and we’re each other’s first serious relationship. We’re putting a lot of effort into planning the perfect wedding and we think that we should put even more effort into building a great marriage. So far it’s been smooth sailing — we really get along well, agree on most things, and (corny as it sounds) are deeply in love. But we want to be prepared for the tough times that will surely arise. Everyone keeps warning us that marriage isn’t always easy. So, we thought of asking you: What are your recommendations for how we can be great husbands to each other? MICHAEL REPLIES: Congratulations on your upcoming wedding and on being so thoughtful about your future together. I’m happy to give you my top suggestions for how you can have a great marriage. Know that perfection is impossible: Every couple will fight at times, hate each other occasionally and disagree about important topics. Think about marriage as an ongoing challenge to get along well with another person on a life-long journey in very tight quarters. All along the way, you will have to deal with the unexpected, collaborate on tackling problems and learn to tolerate disappointment. You’ll have to work hard to keep yourselves calm. And no matter what, at times you will explode. Don’t expect your partner to meet your needs: There’s a popular view that your spouse should be like an ideal parent, who will comfort you when you’re upset, pamper you when you’re worn and generally provide you with a safe haven in life. Of course, marriage can sometimes be cozy and warm, and it’s a good idea for spouses to be caring and considerate toward each other. But taking care of yourself is your own job. When both

partners aspire to be strong, selfsufficient individuals, you increase the likelihood that when one of you slips, the other will gladly help you up. Advocate for what you want and let go of the results: While you are welcome to speak your mind, please don’t try to control what your husband wants to do or how he thinks. Don’t try to be right: If you’re right, then he’s wrong. And you don’t want to have a marriage where there’s a winner and a loser. Instead, accept that you’re two different people. Consequently, it’s inevitable that you’ll have different ways of seeing things, different preferences, different goals and different outlooks. Wondering how you can make decisions about important matters when you don’t see eye to eye? Avoid compromise: Compromise means that you meet in the middle, that you each give something up. Often this means that neither of you really gets what you want. It can also mean that you sacrifice this time around because he sacrificed last time, which is a recipe for score-keeping, deprivation and dissatisfaction. As an alternative, consider major disagreements as opportunities to talk about why each of you wants what you want. Cultivate an attitude of generosity toward each other, meaning that as often as possible — and only if you can do so wholeheartedly — you are willing to lean in your husband’s direction because you recognize that something is really important to him. Finally, here are two bonus suggestions especially for gay couples: Keep your marriage out of the closet: Whenever possible, be open about who the two of you are to each other. Even today, much of the world is dangerous for gay people. You can lose your job in many U.S. states for being gay and lose your life in other places. So of course it makes sense to be careful. But hiding your relationship from friends, loved ones and even strangers can take a big toll on how you feel about yourselves and about your marriage. Think carefully about outside sex: You haven’t mentioned if the two of you are monogamous, but if you are considering outside hookups, don’t rush into anything you might regret. Jealousy and hurt feelings cause wounds that are hard to heal. Trust, once damaged, is hard to repair. If you’re going to have an open relationship, be certain that you’re both prepared to risk the possible consequences. Readers: Do you have other suggestions? Email me and I can feature your ideas in a future column.

BRYAN FRANK in action.

By KEVIN MAJOROS It is the middle of the night and triathlete Bryan Frank wakes up to the sound of hissing in his bedroom. Earlier that day he had changed the front tubes on both his road bike and his time-trial bike and one of them had started to go flat. “When I realized what it was, I was like, ‘What the hell?’ I didn’t even get to ride on that tube,” Frank says. “And despite what people say, I don’t sleep with my bikes, they were just in my bedroom.” Later that day, when he was 30 miles into his bike ride, the second bike went flat as well. Two flat tires in one day. The bikes are lucky to find a spot among Frank’s gear as his apartment looks like multiple athletes are in residence with bikes, running shoes, cycling shoes, sports clothing, bibs and caps scattered throughout the place. His favorite running shoe by Mizuno has been discontinued and he has been buying them up on the internet and stashing them in his closet. They are all necessities on the road that leads to his plans on Oct. 10. Frank will be living the dream that all triathletes dream; he will be competing in the 2015 Ironman World Championships in Kona, Hawaii. After racing in qualifying Ironman events in Lake Placid in 2011 and Austria in 2013, Frank made the cut at the Chattanooga Ironman in Sept., 2014. “Kona is the pinnacle of triathlon races and two years ago I never thought I would qualify,” said Frank shortly after the Chattanooga race. In a race that turned up a dead body in the Tennessee River during the swim and a vandal who tossed oil and tacks on the course during the bike, Frank hung tough during the run to finish between a Russian athlete and a Danish athlete to clinch the fourth place spot. Shortly after finishing, he headed to the recovery tent and was told that he had qualified for Kona. He scrambled to find his parents who had been cheering him on from the sidelines.

“My body started breaking down during the run and I began to feel my Kona dreams fading,” Frank says. “When I found my parents after the race, I was glad for the rain that was hiding my tears of joy.” His final time was 9:36:17. Frank, who works in biological research, is sponsored by Rose Physical Therapy and the Snapple Triathlon Elite Team. He is a Dallas native, has lived in the D.C. area since 2008, is the treasurer of D.C. Triathlon Club and is a member of its LGBT offshoot, TriOUT. His life for the past 12 months has been pointed directly at the Kona race in two weeks. Starting back in the early spring, he began a 17-week build with his training peaking at 18 hours per week and ending with a three week taper going into a race alongside his teammates in the Mont-Tremblant Ironman. That race was just last month. Following that he did a short recovery training period, went back into a build and will taper to peak at the right time. “My speed on the bike is good, my run pace is good and I feel good in the water,” Frank says. The Kona course will be standard Ironman fare, a 2.4-mile swim, a 112mile bike and a 26.2-mile run. However, there will be 45 mph crosswinds, 95 degree temperatures, no shade and an unforgiving course. A little over 2,000 triathletes qualified for the race and roughly 200 more are brought in through a lottery. Ten percent of the athletes will not finish the race. “It’s definitely not a race where I will be looking for a best time,” Frank says. “I want my friends to cheer me on at the finish line, not from the medical tent.” In a nod to his sexuality, Frank will be bringing a pride flag to Kona and is planning to have a friend hand it to him when he is a half-mile from his run to the finish line. “It is all starting to get real and I am really getting nervous. The world championships are a big stage for me to be playing on,” he says. “All the sacrifices have paid off. I have wanted this for a long time.” The event will be streaming live on Universal Sports on Oct. 10 and the D.C. Triathlon Club will host a Kona viewing party on Nov. 14.

A RT S & E N T E RT A I N ME N T

CONTINUED FROM PAGE 33

by phone from his Los Angeles home. His comments have been slightly edited for length. WASHINGTON BLADE: What was the genesis of “Stonewall”? ROLAND EMMERICH: Actually a producer friend of mine, Michael Fossat, proposed it to me. I was kind of like, “I don’t know, with so many great gay directors, why should I do a gay movie?” But then I started checking it out and read a lot and at the same time I took a tour of the Los Angeles Gay & Lesbian Center and saw the homeless youth program and I realized that 40 percent of homeless youth are LGBT. Compared to the overall population, that’s actually quite a big number and so slowly I kind of started thinking that maybe this is something for me. We started looking for a writer and I read this terrific play by Robbie Baitz and it kind of came together. First we wrote a script and then we took it from there. BLADE: The trailer got a lot of criticism. Did it give the wrong impression of the film or were people too quick to judge the film based on it? EMMERICH: I like the trailer. We premiered it at the GLAAD awards and it got a standing ovation. Nobody had any criticism of it there. It’s very unfortunate that some people kind of felt it was kind of some sort of whitewashing, but it isn’t. The film itself uses a white character as a catalyst but the film itself is actually quite ethnically diverse. It has, you know, like all facets of the LGBT community both historic and invented. I didn’t comment on it much because I really felt I didn’t want to comment on criticism of the trailer. BLADE: I’m not a filmmaker. What dramatic purpose does it serve to have a character such as Danny to center the action around? Why was that a device you wanted to utilize? EMMERICH: Well, a friend of mine told me his story and that interested me a lot because it’s still a story that happens today with kids getting thrown out of their homes for being gay. These are often quaint kind of middle-class homes and then they end up on the street and I just felt that would be a unique approach because these stories show that you can be in that situation and hold on to your dignity and your dream and not lose them in the process. So it was a coming-of-age story with kids, which I could imagine very well. Also, the overall theme was one of unrequited love. When you look at the movie, it’s a lot about people who love somebody and it’s not that the other person doesn’t love them, but they cannot be together and yet at the end they all come together and create something great. That

Director ROLAND EMMERICH says ‘Stonewall,’ despite its relatively small budget, was a tough film to get made. PHOTO COURTESY OF ROADSIDE ATTRACTIONS

was overall, dramatically, I’d say, when I started with Robbie, you first talk about the approach you want to take. We are also big (J.D.) Salinger fans and he was a big writer in the ‘60s, you know. So that was a type of an influence, and it all came together from there. When you do your research on this, you realize there’s not really one standout character in these riots. I loved the idea that it was this group of homeless kids that we know about who were part of it. Just an overall riot of many people who had just had it. You know how riots happen. It was actually really sparked by a lesbian who resisted arrest. That’s what really threw everything into high gear. BLADE: Theoretically could the film have worked with somebody like Marsha P. Johnson as the protagonist? Could you have gotten a green light with that approach? EMMERICH: Well we never did get a green light. I gave my own green light. I love the Marsha P. Johnson character. I have friends who are trans women, but it felt to me like I’m a white male, I’m openly gay and we can have all forms of sexuality in this film, but I think it’s good to use somebody very close to yourself, you know, and find truth in that. We also didn’t want to make the Jonny Beauchamp character (Ray, a composite) as just Sylvia Rivera because she was the one who said she was at the Stonewall that night. I didn’t want to invent stuff around Sylvia. She was not a club kid and didn’t really have any relationship

like that. So all this kind of came together through discussions and we used a lot of historical characters but also with these invented characters. I thought it was a better approach, at least for me, to show the feel this time had. We talked to some Stonewall veterans and we only found white guys, you know? I think actually there was one who wanted to call me but then this person died shortly after.

we had some photographic backgrounds and maybe only one or two scenes were bluescreen, the march and one other scene. It was a very gritty atmosphere on the set and I think the actors get something out of that. … I got a lot of knowledge working on those big movies that I could use in “Stonewall,” you know? I just kind of know how to make things realistic looking when they’re not.

BLADE: How was the shoot? EMMERICH: Well it was odd because we wanted to make it first on location in New York but it was too expensive and we found they’d never let us do what we wanted to do there. … New York is a very expensive town. So we ended up doing it in Montreal where we were able to use some Canadian actors and get a huge tax rebate. Once we decided to film it there, everything came together nicely. We had a very nice shoot, like 42 days, and it was one, big, happy family.

BLADE: Sometimes controversy works in your favor. Will it help you here? EMMERICH: Maybe it brought more attention to the film. I don’t know if people would have known about it otherwise. Now at least the gay people know. Sometimes a controversy works against you and sometimes it works for you. We won’t know till it comes out. It’s an interesting dynamic. Nobody knows what will happen but you never know this with any movie what will happen. I’m quite content. I’m already making my next movie. I’m very proud of the movie we did and everybody who was involved.

BLADE: Was it hard to get it financed? EMMERICH: It was about $17 million and we got like $4 million back in tax rebates and the rest we did as a pre-sale to Germany and other countries. A friend of mine and I put in the rest. We went to all my usual contacts and they all said, “Oh, this is too niche, there’s no real big name in it,” and blah, blah, blah. BLADE: Are the Hollywood bean counters squeamish about gay themes or is there a legit point in the math? EMMERICH: No, they’re not. When somebody like, you know, Sean Penn takes on Harvey Milk, they’re all there because they know that’s an actor who can win an Oscar. So there’s more incentive to do films like that where the actor can be the incentive. They also say things like, “Why is he making a movie like that, why is he not making one of his big movies where we can make a lot of money?” And I’m saying, “I will make those movies, but I want to make other movies too.” I like these smaller projects sometimes, like “Anonymous.” Nobody wanted me to do that one either, but it’s fine. BLADE: What’s it like making a small film like “Stonewall” versus a big-budget action spectacle like “Independence Day?” Do the headaches increase with the scope as one might expect or not necessarily? EMMERICH: I think it is more complex making a film like “Independence Day” because you’re dealing with a little bit more complex techniques, like shooting half the movie on bluescreen, where it’s very, very tough to keep the actors involved. “Stonewall” was a very different method, a very old-fashioned method actually, where we actually built the street and everything, then in the back

BLADE: How much straight support will the movie need to be successful? EMMERICH: That will be a very interesting thing. … When we tested the movie, it actually tested better with straight people than gay because straight people don’t have all this sense of they think they know what it was about. Gay people think, “Oh, it was because Judy Garland died,” and they think they know the story, where as straight audiences don’t think like that. They think, “What was the story like and how did I get into the story and what did I learn?” They were actually amazed at how emotional they got in the story. I hope for a wider audience but it’s also not a big release. It’s like a 100-print release, so it’s perfect for me. We’ll see what happens. BLADE: Have you been out your entire career? EMMERICH: At the beginning in Germany I wasn’t out because I never wanted to become the gay director and it was kind of a typical thing in Germany, if you were out it was like you were a gay director and you only did gay movies, so I didn’t think it was good to come out. It was also a different time. Then I came to America and, of course, my friends knew, but at a certain point I realized I’m making big movies, I can be out, so I came out. This was like maybe 20 years ago, which was a bit late. I’m 59 turning 60, so it was a little different time. For me, “Stonewall” represents this mythical moment. I went to Christopher Street the first time I was in New York and stood in front of the Stonewall and it was always kind of like Germany to me. A little bit of this coming out, this proud moment because of what happened there.
