Interview

LUKA GARTNER snowboarding coach Slovenia has a number of successful snowboarders, both on the national and international scale. However, since skiing has a longer and above all more deeply rooted tradition, snowboarders are sometimes pushed aside. When preparing the Winter Guide we had the opportunity to inquire about Luka Gartner, snowboarding coach to the Slovenian junior freestyle team.

What factors are important for the development of snowboarding in Slovenia?

» Development of ski centres and snow parks

in Slovenia (luckily, an increasing number of Slovenian ski centres have started constructing snow parks, which significantly influence the development of snowboarding in Slovenia. Unfortunately, we are still lacking suitable facilities for halfpipe and snowboard cross training.)

» Development in snowboarding coaching (the

quality of snowboarding instructor trainings is constantly improving, lately, more and more emphasis has been put on freestyle, which is the most appealing style to young people).

» Development of and more numerous

club programmes (young people taking up snowboarding more seriously along with the snowboarding life style and creation of the possibility to compete in Slovenia and abroad).

» Diverse competitive development of

snowboarding within the snowboarding community (extremely successful alpine snowboarders, snowboarders competing in acrobatic jumps and, recently, individuals taking part in halfpipe and snowboarding cross events). Important international contests (Alpine World Cup at Mariborsko Pohorje in 2005, Winter Universiade in 2013, organisation of European cup competitions, FIS contests and other races).

» Youth is drawn especially to freestyle owing to its attraction and life style (dress code,

music, related sports, etc.). Unfortunately, snowboarding is becoming an increasingly costly sport, which often prevents youth from engaging in it to the extent that they desire. Nevertheless, I feel that this is a very popular sport in Slovenia and I must say that Slovenians are good snowboarders.

Which country is most successful in freestyle? America (according to competition results); Canada has been gaining much strength as well (it will definitely be highly motivated to ensure that Canadian competitors perform successfully at the Olympics on home turf). In Europe, the sport is particularly developed in Finland, Norway, Switzerland and France. Asians are appearing as well: Japan, China and South Korea. It is interesting that, most likely, the Bahamas will also have a contestant competing in the Olympics (admittedly, the contestant lives in Canada).

How should novices start with freestyle elements? Beginners should be familiar with the basics of riding in both styles, normal and switch, before attempting any freestyle elements. These are the essentials that a beginner should know to start safely practising basic freestyle elements. Of course, some elements are, to a certain degree, already taught during basic elements training. Naturally, it all depends on motivation and the desire to learn.

What is included as mandatory snowboarding equipment? Every snowboarder should wear at least a protective snowboard helmet before entering the snow park. We also highly recommend crash pants and a snowboard spine-guard.

Are there any snowboarding rules? Of course rules apply in the snow park and should be read by each snowboarder before entering; each participant should observe the rules for his/her own safety and the safety of others. It is extremely important that, when entering the park, the snowboarders assess the features and choose the ones that suit their knowledge and abilities. The features selected by a snowboarder need to be scoped first (the landing area of jumps, the type of snow on the jump, the condition of sliding facilities, the sequence of the features, other users, etc.).

Can you describe a professional freestyle snowboarder’s training? Snowboarders seriously engaged in snowboarding are in training all year round. Usually there is a break (in on-snow training) after 1 May, but then off-season conditioning and school take their turn (it is of utmost importance that in spite of much absence they all regularly and successfully perform at school)! The first round of training is usually carried out in mid June, followed by around one-month of break time for older training participants (who

then leave for New Zealand) and a somewhat longer break for the younger team members (they undergo up to 14 days of on-snow training, whereas the rest of the activities focus on conditioning and other sports important for diverse sport development at their age).

In the end, some advice for youth interested in taking up this sport … Find a snowboarding club in your hometown or nearby to learn freestyle elements under the supervision of a professional coach. In this way, the readers of this article may realise their wishes and expectations and, who knows, perhaps in a few years we will come across them at a more professional level of freestyle snowboarding …
