inter is here! Moody as winters can get nowadays, it is a bit risky to start this booklet with some idealised words like “take a look at the wondrous white landscape around us”, given that there could be just bare tress and rotting autumn leaves on the ground. But that would also mean you have grabbed this guide somewhere in Ljubljana or some other town in the basins and valleys. Keep calm - the snow, this essential condition for winter pleasures is not in doubt at higher altitudes – that’s where our winter resorts lie. Not only is the natural snow generous there, the artificial snow cannons are always loaded and ready to do the job. The winter resorts in Slovenia are the same as everything else – small and neat. Our resorts welcome more and more foreigners, who may not be exclusively fanatic skiers, but appreciate reasonable prices, kind tourist workers and all the other winter activities along with the so-called after ski-activities. They range from all sorts of wellness services offered in spas and recreation centres by the slopes, to other kind of joys which can start with a delicious meal and end up late at night in a pub. This winter guide presents the very best Slovenian ski resorts along with the services of the surrounding area. It will help you choose the one that best matches your preferences: a freaky snowboarder or someone in need to learn skiing from the scratch? Prefer a hill for an off-piste challenge or a gentle safe slope for your children? Is sunbathing by a hut as important – or even more than skiing itself? What about cross-country in the quietness of a magnificent landscape? Would your friends believe you if you told them you learned how to guide a sled dog? Of course these were just a few examples to tease you and make you examine this guide in order to find out all the rest. The Slovenia Times

Transportation

How to get around in Slovenia? T

ravelling in Slovenia is easy and comfortable. The variety of public transports makes it possible to discover the country in a relatively short time. There are good connections with European countries and the rest of the world.

The majority of trips within Slovenia start from the capital, Ljubljana. The railway station is the hub and there are regular train connections with all major towns in Slovenia. In high season, additional trains are available from Maribor to Koper, via Ljubljana. If travelling to major towns, take the Eurocity, Intercity or ICS (the fastest) trains, as regional trains stop frequently and take more time. Trains are air-conditioned and comfortable. There are several direct trains a day departing for: Munich, Vienna, Graz, Villach, Salzburg, Venice, Budapest, Sofia, Prague, Thessalonika, Zagreb, Rijeka, Opatija, Pula, Skopje, Belgrade, Zurich and Trieste. The network of bus stations and stops throughout the country makes travelling by bus easy and convenient. The hub is Ljubljana, from where it is possible to reach almost any part of the country within a couple of hours. It is opposite the railway station. In towns, you can use city buses. In Ljubljana, bus maps are displayed on every bus stop. Taxis do not have a daily or night rate, but prices can differ enormously depending on whether you hail one on the street or call by phone. The most expensive ones are in front of the railway station. The best way to see the country is by car, especially if you want to visit the more remote mountainous regions. Cars

can be rented from agencies at Ljubljana Airport and from tourist agents in towns. We highly recommend you to tune in to Radio Slovenia International for updates on traffic jams. Motorway construction is ongoing in the country and on some sections there can be major traffic jams; however, traffic is relatively light. Being a small country, Slovenia does not have internal airlines, but it does have good international flight connections. There are 3 international airports. Ljubljana Jože Pučnik Airport, is the largest airport, 20 km north of the capital. 13 airlines with 30 destinations throughout Europe serve Ljubljana. Two of them are low cost airlines - easyJet flies Ljubljana-London and Wizz Air Ljubljana-Brussels. Apart from major international airlines like Air France, Swiss Air or Austrian Airlines, the Slovenian carrier, Adria Airways, flies on a daily basis or several times a week to most European capitals and major cities. The most convenient access to the airport is by the E61 Motorway. There are two secure parking areas with 2,200 parking spaces. A taxi from Brnik to Ljubljana centre costs around EUR 35. There are also frequent bus connections to Ljubljana. The journey takes about 45 mn and tickets are purchased on the bus. You can also travel to or from Kranj by train, from where there are good bus connections to the airport. It is advisable to check for any traffic jams before heading for Brnik due to road closures and road works in the direction of Gorenjska. Maribor Airport is the second international airport. In addition to numerous charter flights during the summer, low cost airline RyanAir flies 3 times a week, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays, to London-Stansted. Portorož Airport is the third international airport, mainly used for private flights.

Required winter equipment From 15 November to 15 March and/or during winter weather conditions (e.g. during snowfalls, black ice, etc.) private cars and vehicles up to 3.5 t must have winter equipment, i.e. winter tyres on all four wheels or summer tyres with snow chains in the car boot. In both cases, the minimum tyre tread depth must be 3 mm. Vehicles over 3.5 t must have winter tyres at least on the drive wheels or summer tyres on all four wheels plus snow chains in the car boot. This regulation also applies to vehicles with foreign registration plates but only during winter weather conditions (e.g. during snowfalls, black ice, etc.). Winter Guide 2007/08

Certain areas in Slovenian experience more severe winters, with temperatures below zero and avalanches. Heavy snowstorms can obstruct traffic, but usually only for short periods. In a day or two, the conditions on roads usual normalise, especially due to a well organized snow service. However, with sufficient winter equipment, generally all roads are driveable even in snow conditions, except the highest Slovenian mountain pass Vršič (1,611m) which can be closed due to the danger of avalanches. The Scent of the Holidays A

mong all the elements that make up culture and the Slovene way of life – elements that are rooted in our heritage and yet continue to evolve all the time – Christmastime traditions hold a very special place. Most of the holiday activity is focused on December 24th and 25th, the celebration of Christ’s birth itself, which is known as “božič”, (Christmas). Or we can consider the entire Christmas season, which begins with Advent and continues past Christmas Day all the way up to Epiphany. Based on the duration of some traditions and rituals, some people still celebrate Christmastime right up until Candlemas (2 February). Nevertheless, December is the most festive month. Nowadays, we Slovenes find ourselves caught between our heritage on one side and the more modern forms of spending these holidays on the other.

Since Slovenia’s independence, “Miklavžev praznik” (Saint Nicholas Day) has been celebrated publicly and no longer just in the private sphere. Besides family gift giving, special Saint Nicholas processions, featuring the company of angels and devils, are held in various towns across the country. St. Nicholas Day dances and other public celebrations of the holiday, which had already been popular before World War II, are now once again being organized. In the cities, St. Nicholas fairs take place each year, the biggest of being the one in Murska Sobota, a town in northeastern Slovenia. No distinctive meals have emerged specifically for St. Nicholas Day, but they do exist for Christmas. Modern-day Christmas festivities are closely connected with special holiday meals. Journalists often ask about typical Christmas dishes, what makes them special, and how they vary from one Slovenian region to another. Special seminars for chefs and restaurant owners are organized each year in order to advise them on special Christmas dishes.

This is a reflection on modern-day circumstances and the consumer society; most of all, it emphasizes the external manifestations of the holiday. There are still differences between Christmas meals in the towns and in the countryside, but even this distinction is becoming increasingly blurred. Among the oldest Christmas traditions is the preparation and baking of Christmas bread. Various terms exist for this special type of bread, which no longer has any of the profound meanings it once had. It’s most frequently known as “poprtnik” or “poprtnjak” (from “prt”, meaning “tablecloth”). These two terms, as well as the others - “župnik”, “božičnik”, “miznjek”, “mižnik”; the last two are derived from “miza”, meaning “table”), illustrate that the bread got its name from where it was eaten at Christmastime: from under the cloth or on the table. In some Slovenian regions, it was a tradition to place farm equipment and sheaves of wheat or a bottle of wine under or besides the table. Often, there were three loaves of Christmas bread, each made from a different type of flour. The type of Christmas bread baked in the region of Bela Krajina, known as “božičnik” (from “božič”, meaning Christmas), was shaped to feature an image of Christ’s birth on top. Christmas bread made from wholeWinter Guide 2007/08

wheat flour and dried fruit is still baked primarily in northeastern Slovenia, where it is known as “krhljak” or “klojcov kruh”. Everything connected with the specially prepared Christmas table is a remnant from the ancient practice of ancestor-worship, in a time when ancestors were considered crucial. Concerns about ancestors have their origins in the long-forgotten pre-Christian world. Christianity slightly adapted the meaning of Christmas bread and other elements of the traditional Christmas table. Nevertheless, specific ingredients remained essentially unchanged until the post-World War II era. Today’s traditional Christmas table in Slovenia is festive primarily because of the variety of dishes that are found on it. In the countryside, women prepare excellent dishes from the best farm products grown that year. In towns, Christmas dinners and/or lunches also involve top-quality meals, particularly poultry such as turkey or goose, as well as roasts, wild game, fish, and perhaps even a suckling pig, which is more a New Year’s Eve dish. In urban areas, cod with potatoes and parsley is a popular meal for pre-Christmas fasting. The central culinary event of the Slovene countryside is the pre-Christmas slaughter of pigs, known as “koline” or “furež”. In this country, a wide variety of products are made from pork, from sausages to various smoked and dried meats. The primary purpose of slaughtering pigs at this time of year is to ensure quality meat dishes for the festive and well-stocked traditional Christmas table. That’s why Christmas meals often include homemade roasts, various types of blood sausage, stuffed pork entrails, and other mouth-watering dishes.

Another typical dish is often the feature of the festive Christmas table: “potica”. Nowadays, it is the most typical and widespread Slovenian sweet, made from yeasted dough, stuffed with a filling, rolled and placed on a clay pan, and left to bake. There are various types of “potica” because there are many different types of filling. They include walnut filling, which is the most common, as well as chestnut, poppy seed, pork crackling, tarragon, chocolate (the most recent variation), and carob filling, as well as rolls made with various fruit fillings, and so on. “Poticas” are also known in urban environments, where The Slovenia Times

women traditionally bake various kinds of homemade biscuits or cookies. Nowadays, these baked goods represent one of the few remaining areas of local culinary originality, in stark contrast to many other dishes, where people have grown dependent on supermarket products. Another Christmastime tradition is the Feast of St. John, which takes place on December 27. On this day, the best wine (known as “šentjanževca”) is traditionally blessed in wine-growing regions. Since ancient times, this wine was kept in store for special occasions.

The Christmas season ends with Epiphany. This “third Christmas” however, is no longer as important as it once was. Much more prominent are New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day. Noisy New Year’s Eve celebrations only came to Slovenia after World War I, primarily in urban environments. They became more widespread after World War II, when the ruling ideology pushed Christmas into the private sphere and behind church walls. Because there was a need to find an ideologically acceptable replacement from St. Nicholas and Father Christmas, authorities “imported” Father Frost (“dedek Mraz”) from what was then the Soviet Union. He is a good-natured old man with a fur hat and a sheepskin coat, as worn by Slovenian shepherds in the Alps in the 19th century. A positive development of this artificial creation was that a foreign body was given Slovenian clothing. As a result, three gift-givers now dominate Slovenia’s Christmas time: St. Nicholas, Father Christmas, and Father Frost. At time, people attempt to reduce the significance of one or the other, usually the most recent of the three. Once again, politics and ideology are at the forefront, instead of expert opinion and lessons from our past, which clearly demonstrate how new cultural elements appeared throughout history, and how some of them vanished or were changed. Children are delighted because of the present situation, as they often get presents three times in one month. But honestly, it’s retailers who are the happiest of all. By Janez Bogataj

The upper stream of the Soča River is one of the most beautiful landscapes in the Alps. Those who are looking for pure mountain countryside may discover a paradise, but if you are ready for something more, there is a host of sporting activities, which are available to tourists and adventurers alike. Despite the small size of the country, the Soča River valley in the far west of Slovenia, seems remote. If you come from the North, you have to cross a high mountain pass (The Vršič or Predel pass). Because of this, many of the region’s residents complain that they are cut off from the rest of the world. Despite this, the people of this area have managed to develop a special kind of attraction for visitors who want their holiday to be more than simply a quiet rest where they are offered all of the usual pleasures provided by the tourism industry.

Bovec

For those who want an exciting experience and are not afraid to try it a world of excitement awaits. The excitement involves all kinds of more or less extreme sports that you can either try or watch.

Agencies in Bovec, the central town of this area will gladly inform you about the joys and thrills that they provide. During the summer, the list of sports is quite extensive. The best selling adventure is rafting. The Soča River is also known for its kayak competitions. Adrenaline junkies should try canyoning. Bovec has an airfield too. The landscape is beautiful with great winds for gliders and paragliders. You can get a great view from the sky by taking an air-taxi that will take you to the heights of the surrounding mountain peaks or by taking a ride in a “two seat” paraglider. Sledding down the Stol and Mangart road, the latter being the highest mountain road in Slovenia, is a special adrenaline experience, especially if you do it at night. Both roads are closed for traffic during winter and therefore offer ideal sledding conditions.

The transportation in jeeps to the top of Mangart or Stol is organized by local tourist agencies.

Sights worth seeing Bovec is a town with a long history of Alpine tourism, stemming from the time of the Trenta poachers, who led rich town-dwellers on excursions up into the nearby mountains. At homely restaurants, one can try delicious čompe (potatoes) with sheep’s milk, cheese and cottage cheese. The picturesque town offers a wide range of accommodation in hotels, apartments, private rooms, campsites, tourist farms and mountain lodges. The old farm cottages in the valleys between the steep mountains are a testament to the stamina, toughness and vitality of the Bovec people. The mighty fortress Kluže from the 15th century looks down over the wild Koritnica river, and together with the military graveyards and battlefield remnants silently testifies to the horrors of the largest mountain battle of WWI, which took place in the region.

Kranjska Gora

The Alpine world around the valley abounds in mythical and historical tales. Every Slovenian kid grew up with the stories of Kekec, a boy who, together with his pals, bravely stood up to the evil Bedanc and the self-centred herbalist Pehta. These characters partially derive from pagan myths. Kranjska Gora is situated within a few kilometres of the convergence of three state borders, however it is not just a place where three countries meet – Slovenia, Austria and Italy – but it is also a place where three different cultures merge: Slavonic, Latin and Teutonic (Germanic). Borders have traditionally kept nations and people apart, but the region centred on Kranjska Gora, is an excellent example of how multicultural co-operation benefits all.

The Slovenia Times

Russian Chapel Along the road to the Vršič mountain pass, you will come across a monument that requires no imagination, only simple reflection. The small Russian chapel was built in 1917 in memory of 110 Russian prisoners of war who were buried in an avalanche while they, and more than 10,000 of their comrades, built the 21-km stretch of road you are travelling on.

Dog sledding A white path amidst spruce forests covered with snow; the whooshing of snow under and in front of the sled; a pack of sled dogs, grey like wolves, seemingly tireless in their purposeful running. Sled dog rides are performed just across the Italian no-border (in an European, postSchengen manner). After a short introduction and lecture by the master of this sport (and the dogs), you will be able to ride your own sled with four or five dogs dragging it. The course takes about three kilometres – just enough for a magnificent experience.

Active adventures in winter Kranjska Gora is in no way merely a romantic winter destination although it is true that the snow falling from above transforms the area into a white wonderland. The white soul of Kranjska Gora has been and will remain Alpine ski. A distinguishing feature of the Kranjska Gora skiing offer is the varied terrain which offers quality skiing for both beginners and expert skiers. Kranjska Gora is known for its quick access to skiing delights: one could say that you step right out of bed onto the slopes. There’s only a beach of snow between your hotel and the slopes which sometimes lures you to bathe in the winter sun instead of ski. At the same time, you can keep an eye on your little ones. At the snow kindergarten, children with the aid of the children’s lift (baby lift) and various animated obstacles will quickly »feel at home on skis«. You can’t ski? No problem. If you have the willpower, we’ll give you a patient ski instructor

The Land of Champions Kranjska Gora owes part of its reputation to the two world famous skiing competitions. Vitranc cup is a world cup male alpine skiing competition taking place on the steep and challenging Vitranc slope. This year, the Vitranc cup slalom and giant slalom take place in March, a month that is traditionally dedicated to another great competition: the ski jumping world cup finals in Planica, which is considered as the cradle of ski jumping. Most ski jumping (or ski flying, to be more precise) world records, including the actual one, were namely broken here, on the hills of the valley under the Ponce mountain chain.

and lend you the skiing equipment so that you can let yourself go on the beginner’s hill. If Cross country skiing is your pleasure, you can hit over 40 kilometres of tracks and make your own adventure through the snowy landscape. Sledging is also a recreation you can take at many slopes. Adrenaline junkies should also enjoy ski touring or ice climbing.

While Bled, the iconic Slovenian lakeside resort boasts with its tourist glamour, Bohinj can be considered his quiet, yet more adventurous cousin. It lies deeper in the embrace of the mountains, wedged between mountains and mountain plateaus, one of which is Vogel, the most popular of the four ski resorts in Bohinj’s vicinity. The rest are Soriška Planina, Kobla and Pokljuka, offering a waste range of winter pleasures. Bohinj - Vogel 23

Vogel is one of the highest lying ski resorts in Slovenia which means that its natural snow conditions are very generous. It offers terrain challenging enough for both beginners and advanced skiers who love to take a ride off the beaten paths. Even for non-skiers, the place is great for sunbathing and other winter delights. Purely the ride up to Vogel by cable car, offering a breathtaking view on to the frozen lake, is something you will undoubtedly not forget.

Sun seeking above the clouds The Krvavec recreational centre, situated in the municipality of Cerklje, is the closest ski resort to an international airport (Ljubljana – Brnik, 8km) in Europe. Skiing in Ljubljana, skiing in Kranj and skiing in Bled are packages, which include skiing in Krvavec and accommodation in Ljubljana, Kranj or Bled. It is also a very popular summer destination. The location and altitude level make Krvavec an easily accessible retreat from the summer heat of the cities, providing mild temperatures and fresh Alpine air. In addition to the beautiful countryside and the unique atmosphere of Alpine pastures, Krvavec affords wonderful views of the Ljubljana valley and the Kamnik-Savinja Alps. The varied terrain of the ski resort turns into an oasis for hikers and mountain-bikers in summer, while paragliders add additional flair. Krvavec is also well-known for its numerous herbal and other medicinal plants, which colour the meadows in summer. A pleasant hike to Plečnik’s chapel, which was built in 1929, is a popular option.

Škofja Loka

Marko Pleško

Where the Julian Alps join the hills of Škofja Loka and Polhov Gradec, a settlement was founded more than a thousand years ago; it is now known as Škofja Loka.

In 973 the German Kaiser Otto II granted the broader area of Škofja Loka to the diocese of Freising, Bavaria: a part of the plain of Sorško polje, the Selška dolina (valley) and the Poljanska dolina (valley). Thus Škofja Loka became the administrative, economic and cultural centre of a large feudal dominion. The natural terrace above the confluence of the two rivers, Poljanska and Selška Sora, and the foothills under the shelter of Lubnik were an ideal site for a mighty medieval castle, under which later a town grew, surrounded by a defensive wall.

stockbreeding and forestry as well as all the trades connected with wood. The diversity of the area also contributed to a fast development of tourist activities with many tourist farms, mountain cabins, ski centres and excellent taverns. Škofja Loka, in cooperation with nature, attracts many tourists, who, beside the rich cultural heritage, can enjoy hiking, cycling and skiing as well as enjoying the delicacies of home cooking.

The Bishop’s Realm Skiing at Stari Vrh is becoming a great choice for the inhabitants of Slovenia’s capital: it is a nearby option offering night skiing, which means you don’t need to take a day off to go skiing during the short winter weekdays.

With its layout and panoramic view, together with its interesting and significant examples of historical urban and architectural development, Škofja Loka can be placed among the best preserved towns in Slovenia.

Stop! Wait a Minute Mr Postman! The Slovenia Times and the Ljubljana Tourist Board present a ‘new’ old-fashioned way of delivering newspapers. We are sending the time machine back 150 years to the dawn of the mail service that was. Throughout the merry December an old fashioned postman will tour Ljubljana’s old town acting as a mobile tourist in-formation point. As well as delivering copies of The Slovenia Times, Winter Guide and the Tourist Board’s information brochures, the postman will also give advice about places to see in Slovenia’s capital. Although the postman is modelled on a traditional postman from 1860, he represents one of the latest addition to Ljubljana’s tourist services. The postman will wear a dark blue and orange uniform. One particular challenge for the costume maker was to make the clothing, inspired by a standard Austro-Hungarian uniform warm and comfortable and therefore suitable for the winter chill.

Kamnik

The records of Kamnik’s history are hazy, but what can be discerned through a mixture of archaeology and legend is impressive. The town of Kamnik was first mentioned in written records in 1061. The Middle Ages were characteristically unkind to Kamnik, with plague, locusts and Turkish invasions wreaking havoc on the town’s idyllic existence. Some of Kamnik’s most famous buildings were destroyed in the assault, with only ruins of Mali and Stari Grad (the Little and Old Castles) left. The end of the nineteenth century allowed Kamnik to show its true colours and establish itself as a tourism and wellness centre.

is the most visited botanical garden in Slovenia, home to over 3,000 different species of flowers and trees put together into various exhibits and shows. Next to it is an 18-hole golf course and restaurant. Also in the vicinity of Kamnik is Terme Snovik, a spa with thermal waters rich in calcium and magnesium. For more wellness, head off to Natural Healing Park Tunjice, where the earth’s natural healing power can be felt in ten different energy centers.

Sightseeing A stroll along Šutna street provides a perfect introduction to the Kamnik town centre, and is the beginning of the medieval atmosphere woven throughout all its attractions. Mali Grad displays the remains of the medieval castle. Perched on a small hill, ascending the castle can be quite a treat, with spectacular views of the town center and the Kamnik Alps along the way. Unfortunately, there is little left to see of Stari Grad, of which only ruins remain. The Zaprice Castle houses the Intermunicipal Museum of Kamnik. The Franciscan Monastery and Library dates back to the 17th century and houses 10,000 books, a rarity even in Europe, of which 25 are first editions, including a copy of Jurij Dalmatin’s Bible from 1584. A visit to Budnar’s Museum House in the village of Palovče near Kamnik take you back to the way Slovenians used to live, with an authentic ‘black’ kitchen where diners can eat and which is open every Sunday afternoon from 2 p.m. till dusk.

Natural wonders Kamnik is filled not only with architectural attractions, but is also blessed with natural ones. A stroll along Kamniška Bistrica stream is often a refreshing pit-stop for mountaineers and trekkers, who find that the water is pure and clean. The Kamnik and Savinja Alps surround Kamnik on its northern side and provide a challenge for those mountaineers and trekkers willing to take it. Kamnik, in the lap of the mountains, is filled with flora and fauna. An arboretum in nearby Volčji Potok 46   Kamnik - Velika Planina

Mozirje

Our most famous traditional winter-time event is the shrovetide carnival. Each year Mozirje hosts a tradidional carnival parade with domestic and froeign groups. The town is a member of European carnival towns society (FECC) from 1999. The Public institution for tourism, culture, sports and youth Mozirje aslo features a tourist agency with trained local guides. They can offer you readymade tours of entire Upper Savinja and Saleška Valley as well as customized tours according to your preferences.

Family tripping You really need no special reason to visit Golte in summer, but if you need some facts and figures to encourage you, here they are: Clean mountain air at an altitude of 1400 m is a refreshing 10 degrees cooler. Being a high karst plateau, it displays many astonishing geological forms and makes innumerable opportunities for relaxation and leisure. A ride by cable car to have a picnic on a picturesque plateau is an unforgettable experiance, but there’s much more: The hiking map of Golte offers a match for everyone’s fitness level - from mountaineers to children. The initial ascent from the foothills to hotel Golte can be made by cable car, but also by foot. From there on, you are invited to take a walk to Medvedjek and climb the belvedere to enjoy the natural beauty. In the other direction, you can hike to Mozirska koča (Mozirje hut) or take a horseback ride to Smrekovec, a peak of volcanic origin where another hut awaits you. All these are relatively undemanding “family” trips.

Snow Cycling Most people give up cycling as it gets cold and the first snows of the season fall. However, the reasons people do that are not as obvious as they seem. You easily get warm on the bike and it is not more dangerous than skiing at all, especially when you learn to master the slightly different surface. No wonder winter cycling is gaining in popularity and there’s no reason you wouldn’t at least give it a try. The Slovenia Times

The town was established by the Counts of Andechs and it has lived through centuries of changing rulers and shifts of craft and trade. Together with its walls, the town acquired fair privileges, a judiciary and a mint. Over time, craft and trade were accompanied by art. Around 3,000 people live in the centre of the municipality. Sources of economic strength in the area include: Unior d.d., Comet d.d., GKN Driveline Slovenija and many smaller firms. Agriculture is also an important branch of this young municipality that was only created in 1995. Additionally, for the last three decades the municipality has been developing tourism which is becoming increasingly important and employs around 500 people.

In Skomarje, the birthplace of the poet Jurij Vodovnik, the typical Pohorje architecture - skomarska hiša (skomarje house) has been preserved. Another sight worth seeing is St. Lamberta church, first mentioned in 1313.

Rogla-Pohorje Tourist destination Tourist destination Pohorje Rogla draws an especially high number of tourists to the area. Beside the outstanding skiing conditions on the ski slopes Rogla offers an additional offer of sport activities which can be performed in the climatic tourist centre right next to the ski slopes. The Terme Zreče spa resort with its extended wellness offer rounds up the offer of the region.

Winter events Entertainment adds to all December events. This year, domestic associations of the Zreče municipality together with Unior Turizem are preparing rich weekly and daily events on the platform in front of the Terme in Zimska vasica (the Winter Village). Traditional December events include: St. Nicholas’ Eve party, celebrations in schools and kindergartens, Christmas and New Year concerts, Christmas march with lights to St. Neža, the arrival of the Bethlehem light in Zreče and concerts and cultural events at the end of the year, prepared by local musicians, singers, ensembles and associations.

Zlodejevo summer−winter adrenaline sled run If you are among those who enjoy an adrenalin rush, the winter - summer alpine coaster Zlodejevo is just the thing for you. Rushing down the course is truly an adventure. The comfortable sleds are meant for two people, but you can also drive them alone. The run on the 1.360 m long winding track is also fun when it rains or snows. Your pulse heightens, but you can leave fear behind, as the brakes always work excellently. The speed of your driving is in your hands, but does exceed 40 km/h. The adventure ends at 1340 m above sea level, from where the ski tow brings you, together with the sled, back to the top.

Fun park on Rogla An important acquisition of the ski season 2007/08 at Rogla will definitely be the fun park, snowboarding and free-style skiing polygon, which will go along the Mašin žaga ski slope, where the first youth snow channel world cup took place over a decade ago. It is intended for snow games and fun. 60  Zreče Pohorje

Ljubljana

A perfect day and night

Tourist info: TIC Centre Adamič-Lundrovo nabrežje 2, 1000 Ljubljana +386 (0)1 306 12 15 tic@ljubljana-tourism.si www.ljubljana-tourism.si The Slovenia Times

The capital of Slovenia never sleeps! Just like everywhere, Christmas time, when long nights put on their holiday decoration, creates that unique unforgettable atmosphere. The festive lights illuminating the centre of the Ljubljana Old Town turn its squares, buildings and streets into a glittering fairytale landscape. Get yourself into a jolly mood by exploring the festively decorated stalls along Cankarjevo nabrežje (embankment) and Vodnikov trg (square). The sweet scents of mulled wine and mead wafting around and the hundreds of merry people looking for fun - just like you - should do the trick. Ljubljana 69

Getting Around: When you don’t feel like walking… Ljubljana is a pocket capital. Crossing it by foot is literally a matter of one hour. However, the best ways to cover longer distances are buses and taxis. 22 bus lines cover the entire urban area and it usually takes no more than one change to reach any destination. Buses are boarded with tokens, which you can buy at newsstands. The alternative is filling the token box with cash, but the price in this case is higher. The urban railway was a non-existent term for Ljubljana until recently, when a short line from the main station to BTC shopping centre was introduced. Not only shopping, but also cinemas, recreation, and bathing await you on the other side of this unique train line, worth exploring. Should you be out too late at night, with too much luggage, or a little lost, a taxi is a friendly solution. Fares are reasonable, considering the fact that Ljubljana is also too small to make a ride cost more than some EUR 15. The price varies depending on

the luxury. Taxis, which wait in certain “strategic” positions like the railway station, also charge a bit more. Prices cannot be negotiated, with a possible exception of some long rides far out from Ljubljana.

Chill’ in The City Enjoy a late breakfast and take a train ride to BTC City, where you will find yourself in front of Atlantis, the largest waterpark in this part of Europe. The total area of the Atlantis complex measures 20,000 m2, of which 1,800 m2 is occupied by leisure pools. There are, of course, bars and restaurants. The accompanying services and facilities (Thai massage, solariums, a hair salon, shops selling diving equipment and bathing accessories) all combine in making Atlantis Water City a truly modern European waterpark – not only in terms of its architecture, but also in the variety of its offerings.

Ljubljana’s walks The city, as any other modern central European capital, can seem almost too busy, especially in the winter working frenzy, with city-dwellers working late, shopping big and organizing all those New Year’s celebrations everyone seems to be looking so very forward to. An escape from the frantic city life is still just a stone’s throw away, be it to the large tranquil city parks, along the architecturally rich river banks or strolling aimlessly around the town’s old castle. A nature prone visitor, taking a break on a workday will do best to choose a prolonged walk in the Tivoli city park which spreads itself on Ljubljana’s west side. Plečnik’s promenade will take you right to the park’s heart, past the century old trees all the way to the Tivoli castle, guarded by four famous castiron dogs, crafted in detail by the sculptor Fernkorn. The anecdote says, he never realized until the work’s completion, that all four animals lacked their tongues. Right next to the castle, its imposing stairs and the fountain, perhaps the prettiest work in Tivoli, Stojan Batič’s Ballet stands in a meadow. Not far away, a popular café, the Boathouse, serves delicious cakes and coffee. The holiday season brings with it the illuminations and art market stands, selling beautiful handmade arts and crafts sold right on the stands by the artists themselves.

Winter Guide 2007/08

Passing the Ljubljanica River over its many bridges, you can meander along both banks, strolling upstream starting at the Prešeren square, past the Shoemaker’s bridge through the quiet Trnovski pristan and Prule, turning back downstream and joining the residents drinking their coffee in the numerous cafés along the Cankarjevo nabrežje or the near city squares. If you’re up early on a Saturday, you should not miss the bustling yet easygoing city market, just next to the Plečnik’s arcades, the Catholic seminary and Minster church. Always a place to buy fresh fruits and vegetables, meet with friends, and enjoy the scenic colors, sights and sounds. Should you on the other hand relish solo walks and panoramic views of the snow-covered Alps, the city castle with its tower should be your goal. Built as a non-residential fortress in the 11th century, it now serves as a secluded tourist site; its walls are open to public and its somewhat clumsily renovated tower nevertheless commands a beautiful view over the capital. Although when the sun is warm and the spirits high, you can also try for something a little more adventurous. Catch the Number 8 bus to Tacen, and climb the solitary mount Smarna Gora which projects some 370 m above the broad plains of the Ljubljana Basin. With two peaks, the western Grmada at 676 m, is slightly higher than the eastern summit of Gora (669 m). The latter though is the one where you can help yourself to some of the traditional dishes: turnip with sausages, smashed beans or a nut roll.

city that lies along the banks of Ljubljanica River. Numerous events, atmospheric lighting and the December stalls by the Ljubljanica River mark the up-coming New Year. In the stalls one can buy gifts or souvenirs, take a light meal, or simply warm up with a glass of traditional New Year’s drinks (mulled wine and mead) and mingle with the people. For a small fee, one can also take a guided tour of the significant sights in the shelter of a comfortable and warm boat. Stara Ljubljana is also arguably the best place to watch the New Year’s fireworks. The City also organizes an extensive cultural program, consisted mostly of theatre and music events that should satisfy all tastes. Various small outdoor stages will host groups performing all sorts of music from ethno jazz bands to Academic vocal choirs singing. The concerts will take place at Prešeren Square, Čevljarski most, Mestni trg, Kongresni trg, and on the banks of the Ljubljanica. Lovers of classical music will have the opportunity to visit one of the concerts in Slovenska filharmonija.

From mulled wine to cocktails A walk through Ljubljana in the evening is a sight worth seeing. The most attractive spot is Stara Ljubljana (Old Ljubljana), the old heart of the

The Slovenia Times

Bar Hopping and Clubbing The jewels of Ljubljana’s nightlife are its bars. They also represent a suitable place to begin a

night out. For starters, one might choose a quiet place, like Galerija (next to Cevljarski most), Fraga (Old Ljubljana), or BiKoFe (Kongresni trg), or even the jazz club Gajo (Beethoven Street). Hovever, as spirits become merrier, many visit bigger bars with louder music offering a wilder party. One of the most popular clubs is situated on the top of the Nama building on Slovenska Street. Apart from a nice view to the city centre it also offers a considerable supply of drinks and cocktails and a lively dancefloor. Bachus, in Kongresni trg, offers the same. Another hotspot for Ljubljana’s bars is Knafljev prehod that lies a couple of steps from Prešeren square. Cutty Sark, for instance, is a lively English-style pub, offering 25 beer brands. Those who the favour alternative scene should turn towards Metelkova City, an ex-military barracks that is now a centre for alternative culturel. After being squatted by various cultural associations and civil initiatives, this vast area has turned into a vivid party area, consisted of 6 clubs. This heterogeneous cultural centre features music that ranges from gothic, industrial and trance to punk, rock and fusion.

Even though K4 on Kersnikova Street started up in the eighties (which makes it a legend on the Slovenian clubbing scene) it is now dedicated to electronic music. The activity of the club consists mainly of the organization of high-quality events for the student population and the young at heart. Ever since the club was established it has been the representative of liveliness and energy of the young Slovene urban culture. Finally, one cannot overlook Orto Bar, a club that stays true to its rock legacy. It is situated on the crossroad of Masarykova and Bulgarska Street. A good option is also one of the many concerts, which you can find in the Slovenia Times event guide. One thing is for sure, though. With cheep beer and friendly people, one can definitely have a well-spent night out.
