WELCOME 01
I
t is my pleasure to welcome you to the Academy of St Martin in the Fields’ 2018/19 Season. As Music Director of this wonderful ensemble, performing with the Academy is always a highlight of my schedule. Over the coming months I am thrilled that we will travel together to Europe and Russia, as well as presenting concerts at London’s Wigmore and Cadogan halls. In addition, this new season offers up dozens of exciting performances all over the world with the orchestra’s Principal Guest Conductor Murray Perahia, Director/Leader Tomo Keller and a wealth of eminent soloists. Programmes include an eclectic mix of classical favourites alongside new music by Andrey Rubtsov and our Composer in Residence Sally Beamish. None of this would be possible without the generosity of our supporters. We’re delighted to have expanded our offering of exclusive events for these hugely valued members of the Academy
family, who are invited to join us for open rehearsals, performance screenings, musical soirées and a new Meet the Musicians interview series. Academy supporters can also take advantage of opportunities to come on tour with the orchestra and to get involved in our Learning and Participation projects. If you’re not already a member of the Academy do turn to page 18 to find out how you can join us as a Friend or Patron. We would love to have you as part of our musical family. We hope you can join us to celebrate the world’s greatest music this season, as we count down to the orchestra’s 60th anniversary in 2019.

ABOUT THE ACADEMY 15
PHOTO: UPSTREAM PHOTOGRAPHY
T
he Academy of St Martin in the Fields is one of the world’s finest chamber orchestras, renowned for fresh, brilliant interpretations of the world’s greatest orchestral music. Formed by Sir Neville Marriner in 1958 from a group of leading London musicians, the Academy gave its first performance in its namesake church in November 1959. Through unrivalled live performances and a vast recording output – highlights of which include the 1969 bestseller Vivaldi’s Four Seasons and the soundtrack to the Oscar-winning film Amadeus – the Academy quickly gained an enviable international reputation for its distinctive, polished and refined sound. Today the Academy is led by Music Director and virtuoso violinist Joshua Bell, retaining the collegiate spirit and flexibility of the original small, conductor-less ensemble which
has become an Academy hallmark. Under Bell’s direction, and with the support of Leader/Director Tomo Keller and Principal Guest Conductor Murray Perahia, the Academy continues to push the boundaries of play-directed performance to new heights, presenting symphonic repertoire and chamber music on a grand scale at prestigious venues around the globe. The orchestra looks forward to celebrating its 60th anniversary season in 2019 with exciting projects in the UK and beyond. Complementing a busy international schedule, the Academy continues to reach out to people of all ages and backgrounds through its inspiring Learning and Participation programmes. W
e are strongly committed to passing on our passion through our Learning and Participation work, aiming to deliver dynamic, inspiring and participatory musicmaking projects and provide access to participants of all ages, backgrounds and abilities. All projects are based around nurturing future talent and inspiring participants to explore their own creativity. This season, for the first time, the Academy will invite older people to join our Create,
Cultivate, Orchestrate! composition projects in schools, working with young people to enjoy, create and perform their own music. In addition, our Side by Side projects coach the orchestral players of the future in our trademark style of playing without a conductor; and we work to empower vulnerable adults through our community initiatives, such as our longstanding work with homeless adults at WLM Seymour Place. e are delighted that Sally Beamish is our first Composer in Residence, a partnership set to run until the end of the Academy’s 60th anniversary season in 2019/20. Sally Beamish is one Britain’s best-known contemporary composers. Renowned for her versatility, Sally’s catalogue of works includes concertos for instruments from violin to accordion; music for film, opera and dance; tributes to composers from Debussy to Britten; and incorporates diverse influences from jazz to the music of her adopted homeland, Scotland. In May 2017 her Variations on a Theme of Benjamin Britten was performed on the Academy’s European tour, and we’re thrilled to
be giving the world premiere of a brand-new work by Sally as part of our USA tour with Jeremy Denk in March 2019. Sally said “The Academy is very special to me, as not only did I perform with them for several years as a viola player, but my mother, violinist Ursula Snow, was a member before me. When I was starting out as a composer Neville was extremely supportive, and entrusted me with several orchestral commissions. This residency is a chance for me to re-engage with those wonderful players and to create works expressly tailored to the fantastic virtuosity and creativity which characterises the Academy.” Find out more about Sally at sallybeamish.com
