On the following pages you will find information about our keynote and plenary speakers, short courses, the technical program, the exhibitors, special events and more. You will find downloading instructions on page 59. Morning Lectures Nationally known speaker, Ruben Gonzalez will be the Keynote Speaker on Monday. A seemingly “ordinary guy,” Ruben Gonzalez wasn’t a gifted athlete. He didn’t take up the sport of luge until he was 21. Against all odds, four years later he was competing in the Winter Olympics. At the age of 47 he was racing against 20-year-olds in the Vancouver Winter Olympics! Tuesday’s general session will feature the 2018 Lester/Mehl Honor award winner Dr. Glenn Light. The morning lectures will conclude on Wednesday with a plenary on NDT 4.0 by Ripi Singh. All Lectures begin at 8:00 am. Technical Sessions The ASNT Annual Conference brings together many great speakers each year to present three full days of sessions. Beginning on Monday at 8am, the technical sessions will feature topics such as Chemical & Petroleum, Ultrasonics, NDT 4.0. and more! Exhibit Hall & Innovation Forum Featuring more the 200 exhibitors, the 2018 ASNT Exhibition will be held in the George R. Brown Convention Center Hall A3. Be sure to attend the Innovation Forum on Monday and Tuesday from 11am – 1pm. Additionally there will once again be a free welcome reception Sunday evening from 5pm – 8pm. ASNT holds this Annual Conference for the advancement of NDT and our fellowship as professionals. 2018 LESTER/MEHL HONOR LECTURE WHERE WOULD RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT IN NDE BE WITHOUT A LITTLE RISK Glenn M. Light, Ph.D. | Light NDE Consulting, LLC About the Speaker
Dr. Light received his Ph.D. in Atomic and Nuclear Physics from the University of North Texas in 1978, his M.S., Atomic and Nuclear Physics from University of North Texas in 1974, and his B.S., Physics from McMurry University in 1972. He worked at Southwest Research Institute for more than 38 years where he was the Director of NDE Research and Development for approximately 20yrs. In 2016, he formed his consulting company called Light NDE Consulting, LLC. Dr. Light joined ASNT in 1979 and became active in the South Texas Section of ASNT under the tutelage of Ed Ruescher. Over the next few years, he went through the South Texas ASNT chairs several times. He is currently the past chairman and on the board of directors of the South Texas Section of ASNT. Over the years, he made more than 170 presentations on NDE and NDE related topic, many at the Fall and Spring ASNT conferences. He also, became active in the Research Council of ASNT where he also went through the chairs of the council. He served two terms on the ASNT Board of Directors (2004-2006 and in 2013). He also became active in the T&E council where he served as secretary, vicechair, and chair from 2011-2015 and acting chair in 2017. He was instrumental in development of the Guided Wave Testing (GWT) Method and is presently chair of the GWT committee. Dr. Light has been awarded 20 patents on a wide range of NDE applications. These patents include a pulse-echo, ultrasonic squirter; a pump-shaft inspection system; a sound transducer apparatus system and method; an X-ray fluorescence test of laminate structures; a UT transducer for extreme environments; embodiment of a variableangle RFC ET probe; gas-coupled ultrasonics for gas pipeline inspection; the use of a priori CAD/CAM data to develop computed-tomography scan plans; a charged particle battery based on secondary Beta ray emissions; and method and apparatus for short-term inspection and long-term structural health monitoring. Holds Level III in UT and RT.

PLENARY WHAT ABOUT NDE 4.0, AS WE ENTER THE 4TH INDUSTRIAL REVOLUTION Ripi Singh | Plus4Pi LLC
“Industry 4.0” is a name for the current trend of automation & data exchange in manufacturing technologies. It primarily includes cyber-physical systems, the Internet of things, cloud computing and cognitive computing. Different thought leaders have included other disruptive technologies. The case as it may be, the 4th Industrial Revolution is upon us. Just like the previous revolution, only the adaptive will survive this one. During the ASNT Spring 2018 conference, there was a conversation around NDE for Industry 4.0. Ripi would prefer to call upon his NDE industry colleagues to think about NDE 4.0 as we enter Industry 4.0.

About the Speaker Ripi Singh began his career in early 90s as an Assistant Prof with fundamental research on Structural Integrity after a Post Doc from Georgia Tech. Since moving to industry in late 90s, he has enjoyed developing valuable technologies, and approaches for aviation safety. He contributed actively to the NDE community through his Research and formation of the ASNT committee on inspection reliability (POD). With MS in Business Strategy in 2006 and a decade of Leadership roles in fortune 500, he developed strong competency in driving change through innovation. He has contributed to over 25 defense & commercial entities in USA, EU, and Asia. Now, he routinely serves as technology and business advisor to individuals, incubators, universities, corporations, and the state as Council Member of CT Academy of Science and Engineering. Over the years, he extended the traditional practices such as lean and 6-sigma to a much more versatile and powerful innovation & productivity framework

Robert Conklin, Ph.D., American Society for Nondestructive Testing (ASNT), Columbus, OH The course offers to anyone at any stage in their career the opportunity to develop as technical writers. More specifically, the course is intended to assist NDT professionals who frequently have to write reports. It can also benefit prospective authors and reviewers of articles and publications. In this course, we’ll consider writing as a process that involves analyzing your audience, gathering relevant data, developing a clear organizational pattern, outlining your ideas, writing with an appropriate style, achieving technical accuracy, adhering to a proper format , being able proofread and revise your own material. Interactive group exercises, word games, and hands-on coaching sessions will supplement the presentation.
About the Instructor
By the end of the course, learners should be able to:
Anmol Birring graduated from Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi in 1978 and Iowa State University in 1980. He a MS degree in Engineering Mechanics. Birring worked at Southwest Research Institute and Houston Lighting and Power before opening NDE Associates, Inc. and later a training school called Birring NDE Center, Inc in Houston. In addition, he has published over 75 technical papers and holds two patents.

MM Compose a technical document using a clear, concise, objective writing style appropriate for the intended audience.
MM Evaluate a document, such as a report or procedure, for the technical accuracy of the content. MM Revise the draft of a technical document with an “ear” for sentence variety and rhythm, active versus passive voice, and effective transitions. MM Proofread a document for common grammatical errors and punctuation mistakes. About the Instructor Bob Conklin has an extensive teaching career as a communication skills instructor at several colleges and universities. Subjects he has taught include advanced composition, technical communication, and career development. As Educational Materials Editor for ASNT, he took a lead role in producing Personnel Training Publications for several NDT methods, as well as the second edition of Materials and Processes for NDT Technology. Currently, he serves as an Instructional Designer for the Certification and Technical Services department at ASNT.

Leadership and ethics are topics that are always needed for new supervisors and managers in the NDT business. The presenters will review the important role which leaders have in an organization in establishing an environment where safety takes precedence over competing demands. Key traits leaders exhibit on a routine basis to demonstrate the important role of a “safety culture” in an organization will be discussed using examples of strong leadership and ethics as well as the consequences of poor leadership and ethics. NDT is a business of quality and integrity. This short course will be relevant for the person attending the ASNT conference for the first time or senior leaders in the NDT community.

This success in the NDT business has required leadership and presented several challenges over the past 45 years. Don Norton is a profession leadership trainer, certified by John Maxwell. Both are NDT professionals that know the NDT business and challenges.
Joe Mackin is the Executive Director of the International Pipe Inspectors Association. Joe has an MBA and holds Level III certificates in MT, PT, UT, ET, ML and VT nondestructive testing methods. He has held his MT certification for 29 years. Joe is a past president of ASNT (2003-2004) and has worked on both the ASNT and ASTM MT/PT committees. He has also served on the Certification Management Council.

With the support from member volunteers and exhibitors, students and teachers from two local high schools will be attending ASNT’s Day of STEM workshop to learn about, see and experience NDT! This full day workshop will provide attendees an introduction to NDT and its industries and methods, as well as hands-on experiments and demonstrations.

In spirit and in word, this Code of Ethics shall guide the actions of the members of The American Society for Nondestructive Testing. It is the duty of all members to conduct themselves in accordance with the following precepts: 1. To uphold at all times the reputation of the Society and the dignity of membership therein. 2. To pursue their professional discipline and activities in a spirit of fairness to all concerned— employer, employees, customers and competitors— consistent with the high ideals of personal honor and integrity. 3. To refrain from associating themselves with any enterprise that would use their name or that of the Society in any manner countenancing misrepresentation. 4. To avoid damage directly or indirectly to the professional reputation, prospects or business of another member of the Society. 5. To advertise only in a professional manner; to avoid using improper or questionable methods of soliciting professional work, and to decline any connection with improper patronage. 6. To inform clients or employers of any business affiliations, interests or connections which might influence their fair judgment. 7. To treat as confidential their knowledge of any business affairs or technical information of employers, clients or customers, and to make no disclosure of such information without their express consent. 8. To accept financial or other compensation for a particular service from one source only, except with the full knowledge and consent of all interested parties. 9. To perform their work in the highest professional manner, protecting the life, safety and health of their associates and of the general public. 10. To contribute to the advancement of nondestructive testing by the interchange of information and experience with others, taking full advantage of the mediums provided by the Society-symposia, conventions and the press. 11. To encourage and provide opportunity for professional development and advancement of their employees or those under their supervision. 12. To consider their membership in the Society as affording a distinct opportunity to apply their special talents for the service of mankind. 13. Recertification
Recertification points are required to apply for ASNT Level III certification renewal. Attendance at any of the technical sessions earns ASNT Level III recertification points at the rate of 1 point per 3 contact hours under the 25-point system. To document your time in the technical sessions use the Conference App. At the end of each technical presentation you will be given a code to enter into the session “Check In”. Points will only be awarded to registered conference attendees. Attendance may not be claimed for more than one presentation per time period. Attendance at any of the Annual Conference Short Courses earns ASNT Continuing Education Units (CEUs) at the rate of 1 point per 3 contact hours. CEU fees are included in the course fees. All required documentation for these CEUs will be provided at the course.
