EDITORIAL Academic activities occupy an important place in this edition of the Newsletter. We are doubly delighted because this shows the interest that Olympism incites among the academic world and because the Newsletter contributes to their dissemination. Please do not hesitate to ask us to share other academic initiatives concerning the Olympic phenomenon. We are sure that they will rous e the interest of those active in the field of Olympic studies and that they will provide valuable sources of information.

IOC ACTIVITIES (CONT)

- To facilitate research in preparation for the London 2012 Olympic Games, the Research and Reference Service has compiled a London 2012 content package – Part 1. It provides all relevant facts and figures about the London 1908 and 1948 Olympic Games as well as key participation figures and other facts about Beijing 2008 as the last edition of the Games of the Olympiad. In July, a second part of this package will be released, which will include further relevant sources from the historical archives and IOC library and related research papers from our academic network. - We invite you to visit the new Sport for All section of the web site, an interesting tool that maintains the dynamism created during the last World Conference on Sport for All, shares “best practices” and maintains the link between the various people involved.

- On 1 January 2011, the archives from 1990, which until then were under embargo, were made accessible. For more information, please contact archives@olympic.org. - Do you want to consult the library’s works without going to Lausanne? Don’t hesitate to use our national and international inter-library loan service. - In 2010, the IOC Images collection was added to with new photographs from the St Moritz 1948, Cortina d'Ampezzo 1956, Innsbruck 1964 and Sapporo 1972 Olympic Winter Games. These photographs cover the opening ceremonies and the bobsleigh events. For more information, please contact images@olympic.org. - The Archives and library are proud to make their contribution to safeguarding worldwide Olympic patrimony through the publication of two management manuals for National Olympic Committees entitled “Managing archives: a practical guide” and “Managing a library: a practical guide”. - A total of six grants have been awarded by the OSC for the 2011 edition of the Postgraduate Research Grant Programme. Information on the grant-holders and their projects are available in the news section of our site.

IOC ACTIVITIES -

- The IOC has launched the registration process for the second edition of the International Forum on Sport, Peace and Development, which will take place at the United Nations (UN) headquarters in Geneva on 10 and 11 May, and the 2011 World Conference on Sport and the Environment, which will be held in Doha from 30 April to 1 May 2011.

ACADEMIC WORLD AND OLYMPISM - In the framework of the Olympic Chair Henri De Baillet Latour - Jacques Rogge activities, “The Week of the Olympic Chair 2011” will take place from 28 March to 1 April at Ghent University. On this occasion, American researcher Susan Brownell has been invited to give lectures about the specialisation of sports management and the socio-economic aspects of the Olympic Movement and the Olympic Games. More info - The Centre for Olympic Research & Education (CORE) was launched by the University of Tsukuba in December 2010. The CORE is the first OSC in Japan and focuses on, among other things, the development of Olympic education at 11 schools attached to the university, in cooperation with external organisations such as the JOC, JOA and the Kano Memorial International Sports Institute. The first module will be taught from 19 to 25 September 2011 at the German Sport University in Cologne. Applications will be accepted until 1 July 2011. For further information please contact Wassong@dshs-koeln.de or consult the German Sport University Cologne website. - From 19 to 24 July 2012, the International Convention on Science, Education and Medicine in Sport 2012 (ICSEMIS) will take place at the Scottish Exhibition and Conference nd Centre in Glasgow. The main theme of the Convention, the 2 edition of this four-yearly event, is Inspiring a Learning Legacy. In this initiative, the IOC is working with the ICSSPE, the IPC and FIMS. A call for abstracts will be announced in July 2011, and the closing deadline is 1 November 2011.
