T

he Interior Fitout Awards program is the jewel in the Australian Shop & Office Fitting Industry Association’s (ASOFIA) crown. The program, sponsored by Laminex, runs every 18 months in conjunction with the ASOFIA National Conference. The Awards presentation and gala dinner are the highly anticipated pinnacle of the conference. This years winners were announced at the 19th ASOFIA National Conference in Hobart with over 150 people from around the country present, including Adam Cook MP representing the Tasmanian Premier. The Awards provide ASOFIA members with an opportunity to showcase their work, highlight their creativity, skills and workmanship across a range of diverse projects including shops, offices, restaurants, health and beauty, lifestyle and leisure fitouts. These projects are judged in several categories including interior fitouts up to $250k to projects $1m & over.

One member is crowned “National Fitout of the Year Award Winner”. This year’s winner was Stag Shopfitting for their fitout of the Chanel Boutique in Melbourne. ASOFIA sincerely thanks our wonderful judges, in particular Bryan Sidgreaves and Fred Ryder (and Chris Hookham when required), who have generously committed so much of their time travelling the country to judge all the entrants’ fitouts. The production of this Awards Feature publication is a wonderful opportunity for ASOFIA to celebrate and recognise the quality and professionalism of our members.

Darren Doggett National President, ASOFIA

hanel quadrupled the size of its previous Collins Street store in Melbourne when it opened a new 620 square metres of retail space in October, 2013, in the former Church of Scientology headquarters at 140 Flinders Lane. The fitout features the latest in luxury retail design out of Peter Marino, New York. The ground floor is home to handbags, shoes and jewellery, whilst upstairs is devoted to ready-to-wear and a private salon for VIP clients. The five-storey building includes offices, a rooftop terrace and training centre, each showcasing outstanding electrical and lighting workmanship by Norm Phillips and Staff Electrical Subcontractors. Fabrics, finishes and art pieces were sourced globally from a range of world renowned artists and suppliers. The methodology in the design is an extension of Coco Chanel’s original boutique design in Paris. The interior design and use of specialist materials complements and enhances the jewellery and

accessories of the world’s leading luxury retail brand. The fitout centre piece features a hand cast brass handrail to the marble staircase, all manufactured locally, with a faux skylight over a giant Dorothy Napangardi Karlangu 2006 artwork. All of the wallpapers are handmade in New York with every drop drawn up, located and approved before hanging. The typical wall display system is made up of panels and shelves. The glass shelving has fine silk fabric in a resin poured interlayer which was locally made.

Chanel Boutique – Stag Shopfitting

The panels are custom made with multilayer painted lacquer on a honeycomb panel to avoid warping. Each area within the boutique has a different colour palate of handmade wallpapers and panel finishes. Dressing rooms have inner and outer areas where staff and clients can engage one-on-one and are furnished to provide a luxurious ambience. Laminex was used in back of house joinery and for retail floor light troughs. One of the key challenges for this project was constructing the fitout whilst the builder was still working inside and on the facade. Stag assembled a team of 5 office, 20 factory and 40 site crew and put well over 11,000 man hours into the retail fitout over two storeys. The international design was moulded to suit local conditions within very strict guidelines and with absolutely everything shop drawn to the millimetre.

NSW FITOUT OF THE YEAR

Alexander Interiors PROJECT SNAPSHOT: Client: Max Mara Location: Brisbane, QLD Project Size: 370 sqm. Fitout: Alexander Interiors

M

ax Mara is a luxury Italian fashion house, producing highquality women’s clothing since 1951. Its Italian heritage is reflected in the recent store fitout at 151 Edward Street, Brisbane Queensland, with many of the materials procured from specific sources in Italy, including some joinery such as the feature window displays. The store’s unique design is characterised by a mezzanine level with all structural steel used concealed in wall cavities. The new openings in the shopfront facade evoke an exclusive feeling when entering the store and demonstrate the high end designer fashion experience. This included the installation of large stone panels to the shopfront facade which proved challenging for the project team. Other key features of this project include the installation of upper level shopfront glass, and imported steel stairs and balustrade for the mezzanine level which were required to meet Australian standards without compromising on design.

This is another Max Mara project for Alexander Interiors, who also took out the NSW ASOFIA title in 2010/2011 for the Mecca Cosmetica, Myer Melbourne Project. With headquarters in Sydney, Alexander Interiors have offices on the east coast of Australia.

hen the first TAG Heuer standalone luxury boutique was completed in Brisbane, one of Project Queensland’s (PQ) valued clients, Tino Vella of Tino Vella Design (TVD) commented, “a complex project completed on time and a great result for all parties involved”. This assessment at handover of this prestigious project unknowingly transpired to be the forerunner to the 2015 annual ASOFIA award assessment as Queensland Fitout of the Year for PQ. The boutique footprint is 140 square metres with 17 metres on Elizabeth Street and with the entry via Edward Street – is a unique precinct for many global luxury brands. The facade is double story which provides impressive street-view vision. A significant structural steel frame was required for the façade and in particular to support the local, custom-built product of polished steel feature screens and large volume concrete graphite tiling. This combination of these highly polished screens and tiling accentuates the corner location and

atmosphere leading to a generous range of consulting rooms. The Apollo Health Superclinic is a great example of the outstanding workmanship of Masterplanners’ long standing employees and contractors. Kingman Visual created both the internal and external signage. Masterfloors supplied and installed flotex carpet, vinyl sheet and vinyl plank. Electrics were completed by Purely Electrics. One of the challenges of this fitout was the uniquely shaped building footprint. The existing building was also in poor condition. The new plumbing was further complicated by the multiple tenancies located on the floor below.

Laminex was used extensively on the Apollo fitout and included all reception desks in each medical department, TV units, chair rails, kitchens, consult room splashbacks, nurse base, treatment area cupboards, steriliser room, procedure rooms, skin room, offices, multiple storage and lockers, bathroom partitions and vanity units. With over 38 years of design and fitout experience, Masterplanners Interiors is a creative, diverse and experienced team of designers, project managers and construction crew.

All components of the fitout were Australian made. The Winkle Group is a second generation national company specialising in retail joinery and commercial fitout services. The sheer size of the bow tie ceiling feature was a challenge as it took up a lot of factory floor space during the production phase. The construction and installation of the ceiling features – the ‘bow tie’ and the donut shaped lights were extremely heavy and awkward to hang on such a high ceiling. Much planning and engineering went into the installation of these features.

INTERIOR FITOUT KIOSKS

Bencee Les Wilson PROJECT SNAPSHOT: Client: Brisbane City Council Location: Carindale, QLD Project Size: 24 sqm. Fitout: Bencee Les Wilson

B

risbane City Council engaged Bencee Les Wilson, to fitout their external office kiosk at Westfield Carindale. The kiosk was designed to provide a convenient communication point for rate payers to make enquiries, collect information, pay bills and lodge building plans and approvals. Designed as a prototype for future portable kiosks, the unique, clean and simple design made this project look very special. The fitout included large amounts of solid surfaces spread across a front facade of 6.7 metres. A combination of both Corian and Caesarstone were used for these surfaces. Council branding and signage was installed to the front counter and back walls and included tinted mirrors with logos. Located on the lower level of Westfield, adjacent to the front entrance, all work was completed after hours due to the high traffic area. A key challenge was working around a main escalator in a very small work area. Laminex ‘Black’ compact laminate and flint finish laminate were used on the majority of surfaces for the Brisbane City Council kiosk.

Manufacturing of internal cabinetry and solid surfaces took place at Bencee Les Wilson’s production facility at Marooka, Queensland. Bencee Les Wilson is a family owned business headed up by joint owners Mick and Veronica McLoughlin, who between them have more than 40 combined years of construction experience. The company has built its solid reputation around specialising in hospitality, medical and commercial construction and fitouts. Their team is well equipped to manage any project large or small, with full focus on a smooth transition from concept to finished product.

S

ambag can trace their origins to 1996 when Sam Wagner launched her range of tote handbags and iconic ballet shoes at Paddington Markets, Sydney. Since then, Sam has launched 12 Sambag stores across Australia including a new boutique at the recently refurbished Macquarie Centre in Sydney. Sambag provides stylish but affordable fashion that works effortlessly with their client’s lifestyle. Their brand ethos is ‘Classic Elegance’. This particular style was captured superbly by Round Peg Design. The store features large parquetry floors not often found in these types of interiors. Cabinets were specially made by Arc Joinery Brisbane and shipped to Sydney. There were many fine details in the cornices, picture rails and trims, requiring greater care and attention to detail. The installation of the parquetry floor took far greater

time than was initially anticipated and required a number of interstate trips to ensure that project components were complete. Tú Projects’ unrivalled experience and knowledge is well represented in this award winning fitout for Sambag. Their ability to deliver an entire project of any size or scope, from small neighbourhood cafes to multi-million dollar projects, enables them to be a true one stop fitout shop.

Sidgreaves & Co PROJECT SNAPSHOT: Client: Hugo Boss Location: Melbourne, VIC Project Size: 127 sqm. Fitout: Sidgreaves & Co from the UK. Around twenty five percent of the ceiling is open due to the smoke extract system which proved challenging for the Sidgreaves team. There was also a large rigid air conditioning duct servicing the shopping centre which restricted the smooth running of installation of lighting.

T

his project is the first international flagship store for the new Orange label concept by Hugo Boss. The Orange label is a quality urban influenced brand and consists of men’s and women’s clothing that is casual and sporty. Up until now all current fitouts in this concept have been limited to shopin-shop concessions. This 111 square metre store includes a spacious sixteen square metres of back of house and storage areas. The design concept for the store was based on drawings from Hollin & Radoske, Hugo Boss Germany’s leading external design architects.

INTERIOR FITOUT AWARDS 2014/2015

The design made use of extensive wired glass as a backing for all its joinery and perimeter walls. Wired glass was an unusual choice as it is more commonly found in prisons and other institutions because of its excellent fire safety. Being the first Orange store using this concept design in the world, Hugo Boss have created an urban looking space with a touch of industrial chic. Key to the layout of the store is a concealed cash register which divides the space into men’s and women’s clothing zones with tray service. Custom made glass chandeliers to each clothing zone were imported

One of the other challenges encountered with this project was that the interior joinery was manufactured overseas and due to the nature of the store design with fine detailing and simple clean lines, it did not allow for flexibility in the site installation. The accuracy of the site set-out was critical and accurate information was only available one week into the onsite schedule resulting in a very tight fitout and joinery installation period. As the existing floor slab sloped from one side to the other there was also some difficulty in levelling the entrance to the store. Sidgreaves is a multi-disciplined interior design, project management and interior fitout group. Their work includes international brands such as Bally, Hugo Boss and Jimmy Choo as well as established, national brands like Sheridan and Sportscraft.

P

rojects Queensland, (PQ), has a long-term association with Louis Vuitton (LV) which commenced in 1992. Since then PQ has delivered a range of LV projects with many stores in Australia, including Global and Flagship stores, stores in New Zealand and a major upgrade store in Perth with global store surveys/ setouts in New Delhi, Bangkok and Dubai. The recent expansion for LV’s Brisbane store has seen PQ awarded ASOFIA’s 2015 Best Fitout over $1million nationally, for delivery of this prestigious project. This was the first Australian LV store renovation incorporating the new store design created by LV’s in-house Paris based architects and part of Louis Vuitton’s latest global strategy. Project Manager Josh Turner said “LV needed to trade while the renovations were carried out and that meant the staging had to be carefully planned for minimum impact on the trading environment. The works were completed over four stages, which included the addition of a VIP salon, elevator and extending the floor space to incorporate a

new entry from Queen’s Plaza as well as extensive upgrading of the mechanical services with all the internal fixtures replaced. The project involved the importation of eight containers of fixtures for the four stages and required careful logistical planning, including the unpacking and inspection of the many components whilst taking into account the restricted site working and storage spaces. We worked closely with the freight forwarder to ensure precise delivery scheduling of the freight components at the right time. This process started with liaison at the manufacturing source overseas to ensure the items were packaged and marked in accordance with the scheduling delivery requirements”, said Josh.

“Completion of this luxury store for an acclaimed global brand was the result of great PQ team work ably supported by dedicated suppliers and subcontractors”, observed Manuel Pena, PQ’s General Manager.

Projects Queensland PROJECT SNAPSHOT: Client: Sunland Brisbane Location: Brisbane, QLD Project Size: 467 sqm. Fitout: Projects Queensland

I

n mid-2014, leading national property developer Sunland Group relocated their national head office to 111 Eagle Street in the Brisbane CBD. This building is widely recognised as one of Australia’s best office buildings and has achieved the highest Green Star rating available and a 5.5 Star NABERS Energy rating. The Sunland space incorporates a circular floor plan with extensive use of curved detail throughout, creating a unique and open flowing workspace for the various departmental teams based there. Projects Queensland (PQ) was selected by Sunland’s Managing Director, Sahba Abedian, to complete the fitout elements. These included the use of high-end materials such as calacatta marble tops to the desks and bases in Laminex Ebony Macassar Diamond gloss and Euro Corvino veneer with a fully choked gloss lacquer finish that is not typically seen in an office workstation environment. PQ’s Project Manager, Russell Baker, said fabrication of the large curved desk elements created a number of

challenges considering the design brief dictated no visible supporting structures. “In order to achieve the fully choked finishes, adequate time had to be given to allow for any shrinkage to take place between the lacquer coatings - this was challenging given there were to be minimal joins on these large curved structures and they had to be delivered to a high floor in a busy CBD building”, observed Russell Baker, “and on time”. Manuel Pena, PQ’s General Manager said “the company was thrilled to receive this award from ASOFIA for work completed on the Sunland Group Limited office space.

About the Judging Process SHOPFITTINGS

T

he 2014-2015 Laminex/ASOFIA Interior Fitout Awards program program is open to all members with a vast number of categories to enter allowing SHOPFITTINGS plenty of opportunities to win. This year there were a range of categories to enter, including Kiosks, Food and Restaurant fitouts, Commercial Works, Health & Beauty projects, Clubs & Pubs as well as projects which are predominantly Australian Made. So, how does the judging process work? The entire process can take up to a month as judges travel from state to state to inspect the very best fitouts completed in the period since the Association’s last National Conference.

Each entry is reviewed by at least two expert judges. This can create some logistical challenges, which is why there are limitations on how far we can travel to judge entries. That being said, over the past 12 years there has been only two occasions where it has been impossible to judge an entry! That is of course excluding the fitout of that V8 semi-trailer that simply wouldn’t stand still long enough for us to judge! Upon arrival at a site inspection, the judging panel initially views the project from the outside, and then it’s broken down into elements. There can be as many as 15-20 elements to be considered ranging from shopfront, bulkhead, entry doors, signage & graphics. Once inside, again the judges identify various elements including plastering, ceilings, flooring, painting, electrical, upholstery, metalwork, tiling, joinery etc. To a much lesser degree consideration is given to design factors like layout, store planning and colour. Projects are also considered for use of sponsors’ products – Laminex and Polyflor. On average there are 10-15 elements in each entry. Every element is carefully inspected and scored, before the ratings are averaged into a single score and then converted into a percentage. The judging process is an expensive and time consuming one, which has evolved over the past decade. It is superior to other awards programs which are judged purely on submissions and photos. The Laminex/ASOFIA process ensures every project is judged on merit and considered for all awards. By keeping entry fees low, the awards program encourages maximum participation and offers significant exposure and marketing benefits for not only those members who win, but for all members who enter the program. – Gerard Ryan, ASOFIA CEO

Located in Sydney International Airport, the store is best known for its unique Macaroon flavours freshly available in gift sets for travellers as well as a sampling treat station to while away the time. Modelled on a French Delicatessen, ‘A Little Something’ blends French Provincial with Victorian design to create a high end retail experience. The greatest challenge for this fit out was adapting the exacting international design to BCA. Shop joinery needed to be signed off internationally which was testing given the tight timeframe. Custom designed refrigerators used to ensure extended shelf life for the Macaroons were also installed. ‘A Little Something’ epitomises visual merchandising with a thirty metre shop frontage, sophisticated product branding, packaging and display. Craig Watkinson and his team at Alexander Interiors worked collaboratively with more than fifteen contractors on this 170 square metre project, responding to airport site constraints and delivering a quality fitout to the highest standard.

he style of Cape Cod has been faithfully captured in what must be Brisbane’s most beautiful restaurant, Nantucket. Designed by Round Peg Design, the project features white walls and dark timber floors modelled around a typical Hamptons style. The layout is expansive and inviting with an island bar, open kitchen and several dining areas. Patrons are spoilt for choice with options to sit in the casual dining area, formal dining area and a terrace complete with glass windows that welcome natural light into the restaurant. There is a private dining room with full conference facilities for business that can also service comfortable social functions. Some of the challenges encountered included installing the 16 tonne, Marrone Monobloc Cookline, which was crane lifted in. This was a highly detailed, extremely intricate fitout which included special features such as 2 Pac panelling, Currey & Company Crab Pot Lights, and Boyae ‘Banana Leaf’ wallpaper.

SHOP FIT BY TU PROJECTS

The upholstery was by Oliveaux Interiors. The designers worked closely with the owners to ensure all their specific requirements were included. The Tú Projects team paid strong attention to detail by ensuring each design element was brought to life. Given the uniqueness of the construction Tú Projects took all the necessary steps to ensure only the best materials were sourced for the restaurant. The specification called for importation of one-of-akind kitchen equipment and fixtures sourced from Italy, USA and Asia. Tú Projects managed the construction with passion enabling completion on time and to the highest standard possible.

O

ne Central Park has become a community landmark, helping Sydney make claim as one of the world’s great urban destinations. The Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat (CTBUG) has named One Central Park as “Best Tall Building in the World”.

The project features one of Australia’s biggest interactive display walls which is possible for the public to control. A thriving vertical garden is located alongside the escalators. There are two distinct food court areas with natural timber throughout the lift lobbies and mall dining areas.

The Retail Precinct within the Award Winning building offers a multicultural dining and shopping experience with the laid-back atmosphere Sydneysiders love. Central’s mix of restaurants, and fashion stores offer everything from a quick snack and caffeine fix through to a full casual dining and shopping experience.

All works were carried out under a tight timeline to meet the client’s handover date forcing the final weeks into a 24 hour work shift, reaching peaks of 400-500 workers onsite, from multiple fitout contractors and subcontractors/suppliers. Fitout of common areas showcased outstanding joinery workmanship by Prestige Joinery. The retail precinct

fitout had to be coordinated with the base building contractor, Watpac. Watpac were simultaneously building the two residential towers above the retail precinct with over 1000 workers onsite working to a similar client’s handover date. All contractors were sharing the same loading dock and street access creating challenges around coordination of trade and deliveries. Dynamic provided a multi-disciplinary approach to this project, leveraging off their extensive built environment experience. Their proactive attitude to delivering an innovative and outstanding result was integral to this project.

he new Avenue Hotel Canberra is a 5-star luxury accommodation property located in the city centre adjacent to the Braddon dining and shopping centre. Developed by Kappelle Construction Canberra, the hotel consists of 213 luxury rooms, the Marble & Grain Restaurant and Luxury Bar showcasing the best of Australia’s produce, wines and beers. The restaurant and bar features lavish leather lounges and stools, American Oak wood panelling and heavy-seat banquet tables creating an atmosphere of old world sophistication brought into the modern era with clean lines and sharp details. The fitout included custom designed and manufactured ceiling panels and wine display cabinets manufactured and installed by Ryde Joinery. Many of the intricate ceiling panels were stained and polished to meet the ‘old style’ design brief. This complex and often complicated process presented a few challenges for the Ryde Joinery team. Laminex ‘Deep Sea’ 465 Natural was used for the waiter table and host desk, whilst ‘Pewter’ 329 Natural was

used for the kitchen bar and washup area. Ryde Joinery has been providing the best quality, architecturally designed and manufactured joinery since 1974. Their manufacturing facility in Punchbowl, NSW includes the latest technology CNC robots and provides rapid turn-around in timber, plastic and metal fabrication. Alexander Interiors PROJECT SNAPSHOT: Client: Mecca Cosmetica Location: South Yarra, VIC Project Size: 230 sqm. Fitout: Alexander Interiors produced which incorporated detailed moulding, doors and individual designs. Base building work was required on this project, with the removal of a 100 square metre existing slab to bring level the slab at the front of the store. Excavation of existing base materials and massive bluestone footings were required. Council plans for sewer lines and water supply were not accurate, so major investigation and trench digging was required. The building is heritage listed so structural issues were a concern. The supporting structures for the stairway were dilapidated and needed replacement.

M

ecca Cosmetica offers the best in global beauty stocking more than one hundred cosmetic brands. The South Yarra location is the flagship Melbourne store with individual brand sections.

A key feature of this project is the separate NARS store within the main store which is the first in Australia and required speciality supply and installation of joinery by Whytehall. Each brand had custom joinery

The project design was ongoing and a major area of works was the installation of the 1500mm x 850mm x 20mm ELBA marble slabs for the floor finish. Whilst the end result was brilliant, the weight and labour time to install made works move slower than anticipated. Despite these setbacks, Alexander Interiors were able to meet the tight timeframes for the project and deliver within budget.

A

rkade Interiors worked closely with project leader Alexander Interiors to manufacture the joinery for the Bump IVF Surgery in Mosman NSW. Bump IVF is part of the Monash IVF Group who are world leaders in fertility science. The task of manufacturing the joinery for Bump IVF required many different components for the fitout of a day surgery, consulting rooms, reception area, staff rooms and offices. The feature walls in the reception area were custom made of Innato Boston Oak and a central point of this area includes a unique circular information stand. Solid timber doors in European Oak lead into each of the consulting rooms, where traditional medical cabinetry is housed. The joinery for the nurse’s station was two colours in grey and white

with Innato Boston Oak surrounds. The staff room cabinetry is white with polyurethane surrounds. The key challenge for this project was the manufacture of the glass doors for the surgery entrance. Arkade Interiors philosophy is to achieve the maximum return on the client’s investment. With over 30 years experience, they bring together a skilled and superior team of trades people and offer a unique experience of management to provide quality projects delivered on time with minimal fuss and at a reasonable cost.

The project required Medical Engineering for the design and installation of Nurse Call Systems and Equipment Monitoring Systems. The project also included the management of some 50 coreholes of under floor plumbing. The small ceiling cavity proved challenging in the coordination of medical gases, air conditioning, plumbing and electrical. There were also access concerns regarding the air conditioning system and generators on each floor. This is Alexander Interiors fourth ASOFIA Award for 2015. SPECIAL RECOGNITION AWARD FOR INNOVATION

Emac Constructions PROJECT SNAPSHOT: Client: Inhabit Location:Doncaster, VIC Project Size: 32 sqm. Fitout: Emac Constructions

I

nhabit is a standalone kiosk for rotating retailers who are not otherwise represented within the shopping centre. These retailers are invited to display their apparel for a limited period of six weeks, to a unique and differing customer base. Located on Level 1 in the High Fashion Precinct of Westfield Doncaster, Inhabit was designed by architect Matthew Herbert. The retail designers in residence during 2015 include Ellery, Mr Shirts and Strateas Carlucci. This ‘pop up’ or retail kiosk design incorporated brass and stainless steel with curved joinery and structure. The unique structural connection below the slab whilst being critical to the fitout project, proved challenging due to the need to conceal all the floor plates. The running of cabling through the slab and structure was also time consuming. The Inhabit fitout project was a one off custom design for the Doncaster Westfield centre. Outstanding workmanship by Everlast Stainless Steel for metal fabrication is a fundamental feature of this project. Many hours were spent hand polishing the mirror finished stainless steel. Glazing was completed by Hills

& Mason and electrics were supplied by Overload Services. One hundred percent of components for this project were Australian made. Emac Constructions specialises in boutique and custom fitout work for mid to high end retail stores. Their experience has enabled them to branch out into retail concept stores. Key to their success is their focus on detail and construction methodology. Their manufacturing facility employs eight specialist joiners and is based in Dandenong, Victoria. The company’s achievements over the past ten years are a result of showcasing their innovative design and project management.

rojects Queensland (PQ) General Manager, Manuel Pena said the company was delighted to receive this ASOFIA sponsor’s product award for best use of Laminex within the Brisbane Louis Vuitton (LV) Expansion project. “Laminex has been a product used on almost every project ever undertaken by PQ in its history so the receipt of this award after using Laminex products for over a quarter of a century is particularly pleasing. “Our business has developed longterm partnerships with our suppliers and subcontractors and these relationships, such as with Laminex has contributed to the success of our fitouts in multiple locations Australia wide”, said Manuel. The LV specification nominated

Laminex product in back-of-house locations. These included Formica Manitoba Figured Velour and Black Velour Finish for wrap bench edge strip and skirtings. The Laminex Classic Beige was used for the kitchen cabinets and utilised for staff changeroom doors and pidgeon holes, uniform cabinets and for various desks. The brand’s HMR Particle Vertiboard Black Flint Finish was also used to enclose the store’s exposed airconditioning ducts. According to Josh Turner, PQ’s Project Manager for LV there was a significant quantity of Laminex product required throughout the various stages of the project and the reliability of supply for each stage of the project was critical.

“With the demands of the project for our factory production and on-site installation teams, on-time-delivery of materials saw Laminex provide exceptional service and a high quality product. With all our projects we need to meet or exceed our client expectations and partnering with a supplier like Laminex contributes to achieving a successful handover - this was ably demonstrated by Laminex for the Louis Vuitton Expansion, and evidenced by the two peered reviewed assessments and ASOFIA awards received by our company and team for our fitout capability for this acclaimed global brand”, said Josh Turner.

BEST USE OF SPONSORS PRODUCT POLYFLOR

Onward Concepts PROJECT SNAPSHOT: Client: Billabong Location:Wollongong, NSW Project Size: 200 sqm. Fitout: Onward Concepts

T

he legendary surf brand Billabong is part of the recent $200 million expansion of GPT’s Wollongong Central shopping precinct. Known for its utilitarian style, Billabong’s timeless and classic range of premium surf gear is located in a 200 square metre store in the heart of one of Illawarra’s key commercial hubs. Central to the Billabong store design was the unique surfboard ceiling feature, with American Oak used for the shopfront portal and frameless glazing on the shop windows. Another stand out feature were the change rooms made of steel and perspex. The lighting finishes off the design by highlighting the entrance and the rear of the store. Several challenges were met with this project including the surfboard feature which had to have a continuous look in the store, and the team had to contend with the installation of the concrete shopfront plinth. Like many refurbishments of this size, site access didn’t always run smoothly. Laminex designed timber veneer was used extensively in this fitout and

Two types of Polyflor product were used: Expona Vinyl Flooring Design Honey Ash 6167 and Expona Vinyl Flooring Design Black Slate 7153. OUTSTANDING CONTRIBUTION BY A SPECIALIST CONTRACTOR

Hills & Mason PROJECT SNAPSHOT: Client: Furla Emporium Location:Melbourne, VIC Project Size: 172 sqm. Glazier: Hills & Mason

H

ills & Mason worked alongside project leaders Emac Contructions on the recent Furla store fitout at Emporium in Melbourne. The company provided the awe inspiring glazing across the shop front and internally with manufacturing of bespoke steel components. Fundamental to this project were the custom made stand offs. An entire steel structure was required to be built behind the glass which basically held all the stand offs. All the steel structures were fabricated off site and as there was a significant amount of welding required, this put pressure on the glass tolerances during the job. Hills & Mason are a well established company having served the shop fitting industry for many decades. Their highly skilled team of tradespeople and market leading production facilities has made them a formidable force in the glazing and steel fabrication industry in Melbourne.
