IMPROVING THE STANDARD OF CARE WITH DENTALMONITORING AND THE QUANTIFIABLE DATA THAT’S COMING

Dr Chris Orloff is the Director of Class 1 Orthodontics in Perth, WA.

Class 1 Orthodontics encompasses seven clinics. The adventurer and alpaca farmer is also a dedicated research fellow with a keen interest in sleep disorders and refining orthodontic techniques using the latest in dental tech to serve his community and improve sustainability. I talked with Chris about the future of virtual consultations, where we are, and where we’re going.

What was your reason for starting to use

DentalMonitoring (DM) in your practices? There was a desire to be innovative, and we understood the benefit to patients and the approach to begin. We did a patient survey a few years back to see the average travel time required for dental appointments, 90 minutes for ultimately a threeminute doctor-patient interaction. Last week alone, we did 70 virtual consultations by using DM, reducing stress on staff, patients, and parents. Even a more significant value to patients in remote areas.

Class 1 philosophy is about giving back to your community and environment; how does

technology play a part? We support local sporting clubs and have just started planting 2,600 trees on our farm. We have installed solar in four clinic locations and are trying to make our practice more sustainable and environmentally friendly. Virtual appointments and reducing people travelling are all a part of the sustainability approach we are tryingto develop.

What type of treatments do you now monitor with DentalMonitoring?

The plan was always to go all in; we started by monitoring all aligner patients and now expanding. We have begun monitoring braces and retention, and other groups of patients are planned to be added. We see a multifaceted plan within the practice to monitor all patients required and improve our communication to connect with those patients. We are improving the standard of care.

You have been a part of the DM Insight pilot which is being released on Sept 15. DM Insight is about giving back the data to the Doctor. What have you gained from having access to business analytics

you have been testing? What it’s enabled us to do, which we couldn’t do before is look at cohorts of patients and learn things. With the information, we can go back and think well do I need to change my movement or sequence protocols so overall we can make better-informed decisions based on the data
