MESSAGE FROM DARG DARG is a charitable non-profit organisation, established as a pro-life animal shelter and adoption facility in Hout Bay, Cape Town, South Africa. The organisation primarily serves the disadvantaged communities of Hout Bay’s local informal settlement, Imizamo Yethu, and the impoverished fishing community of Hangberg. The focus is on rescuing, sterilising, vaccinating, re-homing and caring for previously abused, neglected and abandoned cats and dogs. DARG’s mission is to control the unwanted pet-overpopulation crisis in Hout Bay. It is also focused on improving the welfare of the domestic animals in the communities mentioned above, by providing basic medical care and support. DARG plays a vital role in the community by decreasing zoonotic diseases spreading from animals to humans, thus providing the community with safer and healthier living conditions. Furthermore, the facility concentrates on educating children from Hout Bay’s underprivileged communities. The education programme plays an important role in DARG’s vision of preventing abuse and cruelty of animals. DARG does not receive government assistance and relies solely on the goodwill of members from the public. Funds raised during the art auction will go towards a new Animal Ambulance. DARG desperately needs help in securing a vehicle so that they can continue with what they do best – saving animals’ lives. To continue with the work they do, they need to replace the current vehicle which is old and has been giving a lot of problems lately. The Animal Ambulance is used for many things and without it, it becomes difficult to get on with day-to-day duties. Injured animals from Imizamo Yethu and Hangberg are transported in the vehicle to the vet and abused and/or abandoned animals are brought to DARG. At present, DARG is sterilising up to 20 animals a week which need to be transported for surgery and then returned to their owners. Without wheels, DARG’s work is seriously hindered.

MESSAGE FROM ASPIRE Aspire Art Auctions is delighted to have been invited to partner with the Domestic Animal Rescue Group (DARG) on this fundraising initiative. The auction is the first of its kind for DARG and is driven by the major goal of raising funds for the purchase of a vital animal ambulance. The life-saving vehicle will not only serve to transport animals between DARG and veterinary clinics, but also aid in the rescue and caretaking of vulnerable animals from Hout Bay and surrounding areas. At present, DARG does not have a suitable vehicle to transport the 220 dogs and cats in their care. In order to achieve their goals, DARG relies heavily on the efforts and support of the wider community and it is in this compassionate spirit that Aspire takes pride in working alongside the artists, galleries and businesses who have so generously supported this initiative. All of the artworks included in this auction have been donated by the artists, and each will be sold at a hammer price free of buyer’s commission. The auction offers the unique opportunity of purchasing a significant work of art, whilst simultaneously supporting DARG and the community they selflessly serve. Individuals can also sign up for a monthly debitorder donation from as little as R50 and lend their support in helping DARG to dream big.
