I would like to just say that I am really pleased to see so many of you attending Family Nights on Fridays at the Village Hall - it’s great to see the new friendships being built and a general sense of community. Everyone is welcome to attend Family Night after all, we all have a family. Whether you are an older family where the children have all grown up and now have their own children or a younger family, it’s just a great excuse to have that family reunion once a week. The structure of Family Night is changing. You will still be able to have your dinner in a basket and a bounce on the bouncy castle weekly, but every week will vary slightly. The 1st Friday of every month is Chill Out Week. The 2nd Friday of every month is Quiz Night with rounds to suit all the family. The 3rd Friday of every month is Bingo Night (bring your blotters). I can hardly believe it myself – I’m so pleased and excited about what we’ve achieved in such a short time. My phone never stops ringing, which just goes to prove that we’re really hitting the spot, for readers and advertisers alike. You’ll notice I said “we” there – although the Living family of community newspapers started out as my idea, none of this would have been possible without the kind and generous support of so many people. then formed the music club. Although the club now promotes six live concerts each season, there is still a monthly recorded music group. Newark is fortunate to retain such a club as many others have closed. Maybe it is because it is able to use the Palace Theatre with all its resources and helpful professional staff.

2. Making the bed or lifting of hands slow and flowing up and down movements of the hands. 3. Holding the ball take an imaginary ball side to side gently turning it over as you focus on it. 4. Heaven and earth stretch both arms out

‘MEET THE LEGION’ NIGHT AT FERNWOOD VILLAGE HALL The Royal British Legion is a charitable organisation, providing support to the serving and ex-service community. It is perhaps not widely known that each week of the year the British Legion spends some £2million on welfare work. The Royal British Legion is the custodian of the Nation’s Remembrance and has diligently carried out this duty every year from its formation in 1921. The Legion’s aims were founded after the first world war and extend to the veterans of all conflicts since. Hence the Legion’s work is to be found among the older veterans of conflicts such as World War 2, Suez, Korea, Falklands, Northern Ireland and so on , but is just as active with the younger ex-servicemen and women from conflicts in The Balkans, Iraq and of course Afganistan. On Saturday 2nd October, there will be a reception at Fernwood Village Hall hosted by the Balderton Branch of the Royal British Legion. The object of the evening is to acquaint the people of Fernwood with the Royal British Legion – where it came from, when, how and why, and of course what it does today. It is hoped to be able to explore any possible avenues of common ground and how Balderton and Fernwood can provide mutual help and support towards the Legion’s aims. The evening will comprise a presentation showing where, why and when the British Legion came about and showing its development over the last 90 years. Afterwards there will be a buffet provided with an opportunity to meet and talk to some of the Branch members.

THE HISTORY OF FERNWOOD VILLAGE

THE CAKES AND NIBBLES WEREN’T BAD EITHER

R.A.F Balderton 1941- 1958 On 24th April 1939 the Ministry of War declared land south of Balderton would be surveyed as a potentail airfield, and that land at Stubton should be be considered for the laying out of an emergency landing ground (ELG). This formed part of the strategy which led to the area around Newark being cocered by airfields at a time when airfields were springing up all over the eastern side of the country. On 9th June 1939 the Balderton site was approved and proceedings put into motion to carry out construction of the airfield.In early 1940 the M.O.W named the airfield as R.A.F Balderton. Land owners and tenant farmers were given 6 weeks to vacate the area. Mrs. N. Hart (nee Richards) recalls that her father was the owner of Cross Lane Farm. He had just opened a new modern milking parlour for their dairy herd when the notice came and was given 6 weeks to vacate the farm. Within 2 weeks of their vacation, work started on the airfield and the farm was demolished. They were not given any compensation in land and they had to find their own accommodation. Spoil from various pits and sites was used to construct the airstrips. This procedure was used for Syerston and Winthorpe. NEXT ISSUE: The Canadians are coming M.R.S. Balderton R.A.F.A

Fernwood Ladies met at the end of July for a 'fuddle' which I believe is the term around here for a chat with the added excuse of a drink and nibbles. We were joined for the evening by Janet Robb from Balderton Library who gave us an insight into the library system in the UK in these modern times. Joining the library not only allows you to read books for FREE, you can use the internet (very useful when broadband in Fernwood isn't working well) and catch up on the papers or gossip magazines in their little cafe area. Check it out as there are a host of other facilities and activities that the library offers, including a mobile van that comes to Fernwood every fortnight. What an interesting night and the cakes and nibbles weren't bad either. We also enjoyed a party evening in August to celebrate that Strawberries and Pimms are sold in the shops! This was a great chance to meet partners and really get to know one another around the BBQ.

CHARITY BEGINS ON FERNWOOD

PASSIONATE ABOUT HELPING CHILDREN The family of a little boy who was born with a heart defect is appealing for help to raise £120,000 for Heart Link, a charity which is based at Glenfield Hospital where their 10 month old Ethan is cared for. The money raised will buy two specialist incubators for Glenfield Hospital. The problem was discovered when his mother Miss Hollie Goldstraw, 24, had a routine scan at 20 weeks pregnant and it was noticed that the baby’s heart was on the wrong side. Ethan has undergone numerous scans and tests are still being carried out, but it is believed he has Scimitar Syndrome, which affects one to three out of 100,000 births. He often has recurring chesty coughs and has inhalers but on a whole he is a happy and contented little boy. He has a big brother Luwi 4, who dotes on him. “On the whole we are extremely lucky during our visits to hospital we see many poorly children and this is why we decided to raise some money for Heart Link” says Hollie. The couple organised a 10 mile family bicycle

ride, which started from Fernwood village hall at 11.30am on 11th September. The route took the riders into Newark, up Beacon Hill, through Coddington back to Balderton before finishing at Fernwood, where there was a children’s fancy dress bike ride. The event continued during the afternoon with a bouncy castle and the bar was also open at the village hall. Over £2500 was raised on the day. “We feel so passionate about helping children cared for at Glenfield Hospital. We just wanted people to take a few hours out of their day to take part in the bike ride, which could potentially save a baby’s life.” For more details and sponsorship form call 07970 687196

150 MILES IN ONE DAY Paul Walker from the construction team building the new homes on Fernwood cycled from Farnsfield to Skegness, a total of 150 miles in just one day on Sunday 5th September, raising money for Leukemia & Lymphoma Research. I AM SCARED OF HEIGHTS Help for Heroes is a charity that I hold in high regard because of the amazing work that they do to give our injured boys and girls serving in current conflicts the best possible care. I am scared of heights so I thought jumping out of an aeroplane at 13,000ft would be a good way to challenge myself and raise some money for a fantastic cause. My nerves were with me for about 2 weeks before I jumped until the moment I was leaving the plane!

It is an experience that everybody should have and given the choice, I would go back up tomorrow! So far I have raised over £1000 and am still collecting donations which is fantastic. Next year, hang gliding! Dawn Crossland

I did not need to worry so much as it was without doubt the most amazing experience of my life (and I have had some good ones). The adrenaline rush was unbelieveable and at no point did I feel like I was falling at 120mph whilst strapped to Nath, my Red Devil! After 45 seconds of freefalling, my parachute opened (thank God!) and we landed safely. back on land.

NEWS FROM THE RESIDENTS’ ASSOCIATION The Committee meets regularly to try and resolve, in cooperation with other parties, how to consider measures and actions that could be implemented for the benefit of Fernwood and its residents. The committee meeting will take place at Fernwood Village Hall on Tuesday 7th September at 7.30pm and the FDRA Residents meeting will take place at the Village Hall on Tuesday 5th October at 7.30pm.

SCHOOL BUILD The results of a petition have already been submitted to the office of our local MP, Mr Patrick Mercer, calling for action regarding the intended build commencement date. The build of our promised school should prove the catalyst and trigger point for the reintroduction of a much needed bus service, increased usage of our village hall as our community centre and greater uptake on the shop units. FEATURED GROUP FERNWOOD BIKE CLUB I’ve been a paid up member of the Fernwood Bike Club (FBC) for about a year now. Shortly before joining the FBC I had traded in my then beloved Suzuki 250 for a Triumph Bonneville, a very bitter-sweet day saying goodbye to the machine that brought me back to the road and then roaring off on a classic icon of the motorbike world. I heard about the FBC from some biker friends who encouraged me to go down and meet up with a newly formed bike club. The FBC recently had an article in the local newspaper telling everyone what the FBC was about, so I thought I had an idea what it would be like: typical bike meet, where it was either all sports bikes or cruiser riders which can get quite dull if you’re not one of them. I was pleasantly proved wrong. The minute I walked in everyone was friendly and I soon got talking to Kelly and her husband Steve; not long after Steve offered to go out on the bikes with me and see where I could improve. This was certainly a surprise and this certainly improved my confidence and is helping me to becoming a better rider. Steve has spent some considerable time with me and other club riders, helping out with riding technique and bike mechanical problems. But Steve is not the only one who has helped; the other FBC members are as varied as the bikes, they have offered helpful advice and have always given the slower riders or less experienced time to catch up. Wednesday night at the Village Hall in general is a social night to kick back, relax and have the odd beer. Quite often the conversation will revolve on who’s the better Moto GP rider, what is the best make of bike (which is Triumph of course but then I would say that) or what happened on the last ride out. That said it’s also a time for the partners and anyone else, who may not ride, to join in and be part of the club. The atmosphere is a bit like a large family gathering with its different personalities getting together and sharing the things we have in common. So far on the regular ride outs, something unexpected has happened, be it wasps in the helmet (nasty), getting lost or pulled by the cops because they where having a quiet day - yes, the ride outs can be quite a adventure at times. Recently the club has bought a track bike so that members from novice up to experienced can book a track day and enjoy the thrill of racing.

FERNWOOD FOXES The Fernwood Foxes Junior Football Club was founded in 2008 by myself and Scott Whittaker with the team that we had been running for two years. We decided to enquire into bringing our Under 9s team to Fernwood as there were no junior football teams playing in Fernwood. With the help of Jim Gould and our dedicated parents we established our own team for September 2008 and our season was off, bringing teams from around Newark and Nottinghamshire to the village of Fernwood. In our first season we finished mid table and with the help of our sponsors MDS SERVICES we had an excellent presentation night. As the new season was approaching we had formed 2 more teams, Under 8s and Under 10s, and had Sean Grant’s team wanting to come and play at Fernwood so we had 2 Under 12s 11 a-side teams ready for the 2009-2010 season. As a club we had some tragic times during the season with the passing of co-chairman Scott Whittaker who is clearly missed in the club and always will be. The season 2009-2010 was a rollercoaster ride but as a club we all pulled together so thank you to all parents and managers especially Joe Whittaker, Karl Thaxter, Terry Sharpe and Natalie Hempsell. With the new season starting in September, we are very excited, with the under 9s being placed in Division 1 and having a fantastic team and manager. Also the Under 11s are growing in strength along with their management team, And this season we have my team, the Under 13s, being sponsored by the Fernwood Village Hall. We are hoping to bring some incredible football to Saturday mornings during the winter period. FERNWOOD NEIGHBOURHOOD WATCH We are looking for volunteers to help run the Police Contact Point in Balderton. Anti-social behaviour incidents have decreased in Fernwood but we continue to encourage you to ring in any incidents. Recently, we have been targeting off-road motorbikes and their use around Balderton and Fernwood. There have been positive results from our concentration on the issue; however, we still encourage members of the public to inform us when this is occuring. We have been working with the Nottinghamshire Police Off Road Team who have assisted with dealing with this issue. FERNWOOD OVER 55s We are a friendly group of varied people meeting for tea and a chat. We sometimes break free and go for a trip away from Fernwood. This year we have been to Skegness,Cleethorpes,York Matlock and Mablethorpe. Our next trip is to Clumber Park. When we meet some of us shed the years and play games on the Wii, darts, dominoes and pool. Our meetings are held on the 1st and 3rd Thursday of each month in the afternoon from 2pm to 4pm at Fernwood village hall. FERNWOOD AMATEUR DRAMATIC SOCIETY

In the Autumn of 2008, just after the hall opened, I thought it might be a good idea to try to form a drama group. Several people were interested so we put on a very small piece of entertainment at the 2009 Summer Fete. Heartened by this we gained a few more members and soon had a proper – though small – drama group. Our first real production, in March this year, was two one-act plays with a supper in between which seemed to go down well. Although the facilities in the hall are not the best for drama as we have no real stage, no wings and have to use the football changing rooms, looking on the bright side, having few facilities encourages us to be creative and imaginative and as we have no funding of our own we rely on the village hall for support. After our expenses are taken out all proceeds go back to the village hall. We have two new younger members who have recently joined which hopefully will bring our average age much lower and might encourage more young people to join us. There is room for all ages in the FADS.

FERNWOOD POKER LEAGUE Welcome all Poker Fans. Fernwood is delighted to have started its new season of poker on Thursday 13th May 2010 at the Fernwood Village Hall on Ruby’s Avenue, Fernwood Newark and every Thursday thereafter. If you love the excitement of poker and the fun social side of the game, you will love the league format and weekly cash prizes, all to play for over a 10 week season. Registration is every Thursday 7.30pm and Tournament starts 8pm prompt. Registration fee is £1 and the entry fee will be announced on the night once the numbers have been counted. Congratulations to Zach Ashford for winning the most Man of the Match awards last season. My role at the club is the secretary. I am also Head of PE at Ambergate Sports College in Grantham.

We meet regularly on the last Tuesday of every month at the village hall and are always happy to welcome new members. So come and join us at our next open meeting on 28th September when we shall meet our local neighbourhood police and also hope to have an insight to the day to day life of being a paramedic. The community cafe Tuesdays is a great meeting point. Someone from Fernwood Ladies will always be there as a friendly face and if you're interested in knitting, painting, bridge or reading Tuesdays may be able to introduce you to others with the same interests. Or just come along for a coffee and a chat.

CAFE.COM Cafe.com, the cafe church that meets in Fernwood, celebrated the summer by holding its August meeting outside on the Green. This is always a bit of a risk in British weather, but we were blessed by beautiful sunshine all afternoon. We took part in a variety of games and activities, from quizzes to rounders. Some of us even braved a keep fit challenge before undoing all the hard work when we tucked into our picnics. After this venture outdoors, we return to the village hall on September 26th at 6 pm for our usual 4th Sunday meeting when our activities and discussions will be on the theme of Harvest. As always anyone who is interested in exploring issues of faith and meaning is welcome to join us.

WHO YOU GONNA CALL... THE GHOST MAN

It was such a filthy wet night when I set off to join Ian Gillanders for his Newark Ghost Walk that no ghost with any sense would have been seen dead in all the teeming rain.

PARANORMAL PROCEEDINGS So I feared I might be Ian’s only ghost fancier that sodden summer evening, but I hadn’t reckoned on the sturdy souls who make up Sutton-on-Trent WI. Fifteen members and one guest duly assembled under massed umbrellas at the Gilstrap Centre before moving on to the Castle Grounds, where Ian began his unique tour linking Newark’s historic buildings and the strange paranormal proceedings that allegedly took place in them. Ian, who now lives in Balderton, is Newark born and bred and is an amusing and insightful guide to the ghostly goings-on as well as a fountain of knowledge about the town’s history. His ghost walks were born out of a passion for that history and for Newark’s historic buildings, so anyone joining his tour is set to learn a lot as well hearing plenty of spooky stories. “All I want is for people to enjoy it,” says Ian, “and I really enjoy it too when I tell one personal story with a twist in the tail, and hear them gasp…

of vigils in the Castle’s undercroft or cellar, when witnesses reported a sensation as if small stones were being tossed at their feet. And it’s surprising how jolly the evening turned out, considering the number of suicides, murders and executions in the stories. But Ian’s enthusiasm is infectious, as indeed are the ghost stories. When he asks early on if anyone in the assembly has had a paranormal experience, a lady under a brown umbrella gives a nod. She didn’t want her name published but confesses to having seen “a dark lady” when walking her dog. Ian is accustomed to such confessions. “It’s fantastic. I never know what people are going to come up with, I really don’t.”

EYE-OPENING LOOK AT NEWARK

Ian, who works for Vodafone and has a background in sales, is keen to develop his side-line and make locals of all ages more aware of the history and heritage around them that may get ignored or taken for granted when we’re all busily going about our daily business.

“I’m entirely self-taught. I just do this as a hobby and for the love of it.” For starters he takes his audience right back to the Bronze Age and the earliest signs of a settlement here, moving briskly on to detail Lady Godiva’s little-known but well-documented links to the town.

The tour offers an eye-opening look around Newark for local WIs and other groups or individuals, but tourists are another target. “There’s lots of potential to develop this for tourists,” says Ian. “It would particularly appeal to Japanese and American visitors. I don’t think we make enough of the Civil War heritage and the town’s history. My dream would be to organize package trips where they stay over. I’d like to organize more overnight vigils too, and ‘Meet A Medium’ nights.”

Godiva (or Godgifu – ‘Gift of God’ – in Old English) was a substantial landowner in the Newark area, and in the 11th-century, Newark was as important as Nottingham, thanks to the magnet of its bridge over the Trent. Ian sets spines tingling with stories

was entitled to a fair trial but were overruled when King James invoked his Divine Right to have the man hanged. Ian points out that the house named Gallowsfield on Baldertongate marks the spot where the unfortunate and possibly light-fingered victim breathed his last.

“THE MOST HAUNTED BUILDING IN NEWARK” Next we are shepherded to the Ossington, now Zizzi’s restaurant, “the most haunted building in Newark,” presumably because, when it was built as a temperance hotel in 1880, benefactor Lady Ossington made it a stipulation of the 99-year lease that no alcohol should ever be served there. She has probably been spinning in her grave for the last 30 years as a succession of licensed premises took over the ground floor. Other ghostly spots en route included the old timbered building in Kirkgate that now houses Charles 1st Coffee House, plus the parish church, the Friary on Appletongate and the Elizabethan splendour of the White Hart pub on the Market Square. WI member Sue Pike gave her verdict: “I’m not convinced about the ghosts I’m afraid but I enjoyed it – and I did learn things that I didn’t already know, even though I’ve lived in the area all my life.” Fellow-member Linda Jordan said the walk brought back her own youthful memories of Newark –

including a ghostly story about a row of houses demolished to make way for the Victoria Street Coop. “One of the houses had a well and a lady fell down it and perished when the floor by it gave way. This was close to a house where relatives of mine lived and they said you could hear the chains of the well rattling at night…” Curiouser and curiouser. As the WI party splash off through the rain for a well-deserved dinner at the Roman Way, Ian and I repair to The White Hart to chew over the evening’s events and Ian tells me about the building on the Market Place, now occupied by Betfred, which 50 years ago was Stennet’s Printers.

MAN IN DICKENSIAN CLOTHES

A lady told him that 50 years earlier she was a new girl just starting a job there when she went to the topfloor stationery store, not realising that older hands only went in pairs. She saw a man in Dickensian clothes who walked straight through a wall. Petrified, she went down to tell the other staff members. “Oh, you’ve seen Billy Weaver,” they said. Generations before, Billy had lived on the third floor and died there. Hi all – I’m Amy Watson and I’ve been dancing since I was four! Some of you will know me from dance classes at the village hall but for those who don’t, this is just a little bit about me and how I’ve fulfilled my dreams to have my own dance school…

I was obsessed by Michael Jackson’s dancing. My brother and I would do all the moves.

”

Although I started out learning ballet with Kids & Co, I was obsessed by Michael Jackson’s dancing. My brother and I would do all the moves – we’ve got the videos to prove it! – and our parents soon decided to enrol us at Grapevine, now known as Jayne Ross School of Dance, so we could act on our crazy style of dancing. The nicest teacher ever, Jayne is still a great friend and has given me lots of help fulfilling my ambitions. From the age of 6 till I was 16, I went to Jayne’s classes – I made some good friends there and we all had a great laugh. At the same time, I was performing in the community pantomimes directed by my dad, Steve Watson, and worked with some excellent choreographers like Charlotte Hamilton, Elaine Varny and Mark Hedges.

When I got a place at a top London performing arts school, I was all set to become the next big thing but then I met someone I thought was the boy of my dreams. Surprise, surprise, it didn’t last… A lesson to everyone here: if you have a dream, follow it – don’t let anything or anyone stop you! But by the time I reached 18, I knew I wanted use my dance skills to teach and started a six month course with my friend Emma. After a lot of hard work, we both qualified as student teachers, which meant we could work in dance schools but not run classes on our own. So the next step was to take the Associate exam – more hard work, as I managed to learn everything in just two months (it’s supposed to take a year’s studying!), then I went in and danced my heart out for the exam – and PASSED!!

AJ’S DANCE At last I was able to found my own school, which I called AJ’s Dance – that’s me, Amy Jayne! – and began to teach everywhere, running new classes in Lincoln, Collingham and Newark, in schools and youth clubs and at all kinds of events. We even performed at half time at Lincoln City Football Club! During this time, I also worked at LA Fitness and trained with Aleysha

Dixon’s choreographer, learning a set fitness dance routine – that was a really good class! When friends living in and around Fernwood suggested I should start a class in the village hall, I wasn’t sure at first but decided to give it a try. The response was amazing – I’ve never heard a phone ring so much in my life! Having decided to put on an adult class, I couldn’t believe how many ladies came to the first session – we now have over 25 attending regularly and everyone has a great laugh in the classes. Five years after qualifying, I started to think it was time to have my own dance school and now I’m just a few steps away from achieving my dream. The studio is being decorated and will open soon, although I’m not giving away any details just yet – it’s going to be

a big surprise but look out for leaflets, posters and articles in the local papers. All I’m going to say is my dance school will be completely different from all the others in Newark, aimed at all you Street Dance fans out there… A big thank you to everyone who attends the classes – keep up the good work, you’ll be on Britain’s Got Talent in no time!! PARTY IN FERNWOOD Fund Raising for the Spinal Injuries Association Saturday 28th August 2010 What a fantastic day, even the weather couldn’t dampen our fundraising community spirit. The day started for some at 8am with many hands making light work, the marquee went up and the stage arrived, along with all the PA equipment. That was it - the stage was set, Howard from Boundary Sound arrived to compere for the day, now all we needed was for the local talented bands who had kindly offered to play for free, to help us raise as much money as we could for the Spinal Injuries Unit. 12 o’clock came and we were ready to go. We would like to thank Tonberry, The Strafes, Erosion, Jack & Josh, The Unusual Suspects, Loveboat Captains, The 49ers and The Framed, you were all amazing. The biggest thanks must go without a doubt to Joe and Darren Pointing (FM Event Management), without whose help the day would not have been possible. After a very long day, eight live, very talented bands later we raised an amazing £300. Again the Community of Fernwood all pulled together, we had a fantastic day, raised some money for a very worthy cause - bring on next year. CHILDREN GET CONSTRUCTIVE WITH DAVID WILSON DURING SUMMER HOLIDAYS Children living at David Wilson North Midlands’ Fernwood Village development in Balderton have been given the chance to do something constructive during their summer holidays by taking part in a site safety tour. The housebuilder invited all children currently living at the development on Great North Road to take part in an educational tour of the site to learn more about where they live. The aim of the tour was to promote site safety and the children were taught how to stay safe by NHBC winning site manager Martin Rose, who was on hand to lead the tour and to answer any questions the budding brickies had about working building sites. The youngsters, who were aged between five and 12, also got an insight into the house building process as a whole and were shown how each of their new homes were constructed. Rob Hutchings, Construction Director at David Wilson North Midlands, comments “As a predominately family orientated development, we have a lot of children living at Fernwood Village and of course, their safety is of utmost importance to us, which is why we decided to organise this site safety visit. “As a working building site, children could be forgiven for looking at the machinery and equipment and seeing it as a fun and exciting playground but that is certainly not the case and these visits are a great way of teaching them all about the dangers of playing on building sites, whilst promoting the

This month, my friend and I headed to the Tawny Owl for a spot of lunch. Sitting down at a table, we were greeted almost immediately by a polite and friendly waitress who was attentive and served us throughout our meal.

COOKED PERFECTLY We decided to give starters a miss and for our main courses ordered Cajun Chicken - chicken breast marinated in spices to give it a taste of the Deep South - to Beef Enchiladas - spicy beef wrapped in flour tortillas topped with a cheese sauce. The spices in the Cajun Chicken made it flavoursome and the chicken breast was succulent and tender, and further complemented by a sour cream and chive dip. The chicken was served with chips and a side salad, while the Beef Enchiladas came with garlic bread and a side salad. I would certainly recommend the enchiladas, which were cooked perfectly to crisp, and

the tortillas and the beef were spiced just to the right degree.

SPOILT FOR CHOICE We were left satisfied with our meals but had just enough room left to squeeze in a dessert. With the large selection on offer there is something to cater for everybody’s palate. We were left spoilt for choice but finally opted for a Toffee Waffle and Melt in the Middle Chocolate Pudding. The Belgian waffle was drizzled with toffee sauce leaving it sticky and delightfully sweet. The waffle itself, which was complemented by creamy vanilla and toffee ice cream, was soft and fluffy on the inside yet crisp and golden on the outside. The Melt in the Middle Chocolate Pudding (served with cream, ice cream or custard) is simply a chocolate lover’s dream- warm, rich chocolate sauce oozes from the centre of a light and delicious chocolate sponge. Heaven!

Overall, the Tawny Owl proved itself to be not only a place for evening meals but, with its friendly and more serene atmosphere, the perfect place to visit on a weekday afternoon to catch up and have lunch with a friend.

WHAT IS DRY CLEANING? Dryclean Plus was established in Newark in 2009 on the corner of Northgate and Slaughterhouse Lane, in the area known as The Clock Tower, Bargate. At the end of May 2010 the company was purchased by a local man who, whilst in London, became one of the countries leading silk garment and stain removal specialists. His name is Antony Pollard.

Since his takeover Dryclean Plus has gained a rather good reputation in the specialist dry cleaning field. Whilst in London, Antony worked at the highest levels in the dry cleaning industry with famous London stores such as Max Mara, Hermes and Aquascutum all using his services. Moreover, Antony has a long list of well know individual clients from the pop group Take That, to past Prime Ministers such as Margaret Thatcher and the entrepreneur, Richard Branson. Such was the standard achieved by the shop he managed in Clapham South, named ‘Mr. Steeds’, that they became the chosen dry cleaner to the very highest members of the Royal Family, including Her Majesty the Queen. Steeds were subsequently awarded the coveted Royal Crest for their outstanding customer services, presentation and services to the dry cleaning industry. Whilst in London Antony also became a London tour guide and has published a book called ‘Tales of Old London Town’. In 2006 he returned to Newark to read history at the University of Lincoln, leaving with a degree in history in 2009. So ‘Fernwood Living’ thought what better person to ask the question: -

‘The term ‘dry cleaning’ is somewhat of a misnomer, as the garments brought for my attention do actually become ‘wet’ in the dry cleaning process, but not with water. The solvent used is a non-aqueous solution know as perchloroethylene, or ‘perc’ for short. Anyone working in the dry cleaning industry should be familiar with the Frenchman Jean Baptiste Jolly, for it is often said that it was Jolly who, quite by accident, discovered the process of dry cleaning in 1855. Jolly, a French dye-works owner, noticed that his table cloth became cleaner after his maid accidentally overturned a kerosene lamp on it. Operating through his dye-works company, Jolly offered a new service which he called ‘nettoyage à sec’ or ‘dry cleaning’. The name has stuck ever since.’

‘SO HE DISCOVERED DRY CLEANING FLUID?’ ‘No, we must first turn to our very own Michael Faraday, for it was Faraday who first synthesized the solution tetrachloroethene as far back as 1821. It was this somewhat volatile synthetic solvent that was used in the dry cleaning process until the 1940s, when it gave way to the more stable and safer chemical, perc. Perc is by far the most aggressive solvent one can use in the dry cleaning process, but it is also the best.’

‘SO WHEN DID DRY CLEANING BECOME POPULAR?’

‘It was the British company Spencer that introduced the first in-shop dry cleaning machines. They consisted of three models, the Spencer Minor, Spencer Junior and Spencer Major. The cleaning and drying process was controlled by a punch-card, which fed through the ‘Spencermatic’ reader on the machine. Spencer continued to produce machines until the late 1980s, when the company closed. Look carefully and you may still spot Spencer machines in some dry cleaning shops today.’

‘SO WHEN I BRING AN ITEM OF CLOTHING TO DRYCLEAN PLUS THAT HAS A STAIN UPON IT, WHAT IS THE PROCESS?’ ‘We have tried and tested chemicals for stain removal that if used correctly do not damage the garments, or spread the stain. Your stained garment is first tested to see which chemical is suitable to remove the stain without causing any colour damage, although that said, this can never be guaranteed due the fact that colour damage may already have occurred. The stain removal chemical is then carefully worked into the marked area using a very delicate brush under special lighting and a vacuumised table. Once satisfied that the stain is beginning to lift, the garment is dry cleaned, wherein the stain and chemical solution are ‘washed’ from the garment leaving no trace of the stain. Your garment is then expertly finished and presented back to you to wear at your next occasion or function. Lastly, may I also put a myth to bed regarding the removal of red wine by using white wine. Often we have customers coming to the shop stating that red wine has been spilt on their clothes and they have put white wine on it but it has not removed the stain. This myth has arisen due to the fact that on a dining table there is often found red and white wine, so white wine is the closest clear liquid to hand with which to dilute the stain - which it does, but it only spreads it to a wider area. My advice to anyone who has a stain, no matter how small on their favourite item, is that they should always take it to be treated by a professional.’

‘SO ANY MORE LONDON TOURS PLANNED IN THE FUTURE?’ ‘The last couple of tours I have done have been for Newark CAMRA, so they did involve several historic London taverns. All of which, of course, had to be inspected. I am hoping to organise a riverside tour next spring via its old and historic taverns, so anyone wishing to join us, just pop into my shop for details’.
