“The Jewel in the Crown of the Fringe” Scotsman
Welcome to Assembly 2013 The Edinburgh Festival Fringe is the largest and greatest arts festival in the world. In the midst of so many offerings, Assembly sets out to be distinctive by creating a programme that appeals through its excellence. This is led by a new testimonial piece directed by internationally acclaimed playwright and Director Yael Farber (creator of last year’s award-winning hit Mies Julie), NIRBHAYA, a searing new work that will move, and inspire. Steven Berkoff has written and will star in a new show, AN ACTOR’S LAMENT, whilst we present the first ever Lars von Trier stage adaptation of THE BOSS OF IT ALL, and are joined by ‘80s star Corey Feldman in WHITE’S LIES. We follow last year’s success with a second South African Season, featuring Dame Janet Suzman in SOLOMON AND MARION, along with other brilliant shows. RICK WAKEMAN leads the music programme mixing his remarkable musical genius with hilarious stories. This is followed by the likes of ANTONIO FORCIONE and MUGENKYO TAIKO DRUMMERS. Our comedy programme is awesome, and includes MILTON JONES, ADAM HILLS, PAJAMA MEN, RICH HALL, (winner of this year’s Melbourne Comedy Festival Barry Award) and many more. Circus and cabaret abounds, led by last year’s hit, KNEE DEEP, who are joined by the fabulous BRIEFS, 2012 TO&ST Cabaret Award-Winner LADY RIZO and the juggling revolution SMASHED. For children’s shows, start the day in George Square with THE BREAKFAST CLUB, and HAIRY MACLARY, along with a kids ROMEO AND JULIET from the Bristol Old Vic. In all we present 150 shows in fourteen temporary theatres across four sites: ASSEMBLY HALL, ASSEMBLY CHECKPOINT, ASSEMBLY GEORGE SQUARE and ASSEMBLY ROXY. For a “powerhouse of creative energy” and a great festival look no further!

PLEASE SUPPORT ASSEMBLY We love the Edinburgh Festival Fringe and we know that many of you do too. We ask that you consider supporting our work so we can continue to present great work from around the world in the best venues in Edinburgh. We cannot build Assembly Festival and shows without your support. As a registered charity (a strictly not-for-profit organisation) we do not receive any regular public funding. We rely on donations and sponsorship to grow our work and create presenting opportunities, for the artists and organisations we work with. We invest all our income (box office, bars, sponsorship, donations) in presenting the highest standard of work, supporting arts companies to present and making our venues the best places in Edinburgh to showcase our handpicked programme. We bring the best talent in the world to the Edinburgh Festival Fringe and beyond. We have built a reputation for excellence as the leading home for the best international shows. This year 45% of our programme is sourced internationally from over 20 countries. We risk money presenting shows and produce nearly a third of our programme, higher than any other major venue. Assembly invests so that new work, international work, and work of very high artistic merit is presented to the Edinburgh audience. We believe that great work deserves an audience and wish we could produce more. By supporting innovative new and international works we hope to help broaden and grow audiences for the performing arts.

Assembly Teresa Cálem scans the world with extraordinary skill. Her art constantly seeks out hidden thoughts. Every face displays enough of the individual to make it unique and yet, each one of them is conveyed to us as being part of the same moment. There’s a sort of harmony between each look, between the outer and the inward vision, between seeing and being seen. There’s an incredible alliance and her painting is witness to this miracle. THEATRE
Central Standard Theatre - Kansas City Bedtime Solos tells the story of a couple over an evening of lovemaking, exploring the isolation that exists between two people even in the height of passion. At times, they speak in conversation, the subtle dance of seduction... at other times, they verbalise their innermost thoughts. Poetic and dense with imagery, this examination of how we love also considers why we love. www.cstkc.com | Twitter: @cstkc

by Kate Saffin Alarum Theatre When dowdy Pauline allows her bossy neighbour to talk her into a holiday on a canal boat, she isn’t expecting to revisit her past, or find a new future. Kate Saffin has created a warm and witty look at what happens when a waterways holiday takes an unexpected turn - back to carefully forgotten memories of stifling respectability, young love, and the 60s that didn’t swing for everyone. www.alarumtheatre.co.uk | Twitter@alarum_theatre £5 W

AN ACTOR’S LAMENT BY STEVEN BERKOFF
Assembly Steven Berkoff stars with Jay Benedict and Andree Bernard in the world premiere of this new play. This hilarious satire is a glimpse backstage, lifting the curtain on the bizarre and often hilarious world of theatre. From precious playwrights and dictator directors to the goodwill (or otherwise) of the critics - there is a maze of thickets the actor must negotiate before they ever reach the stage. A comedy about the bizarre lives of actors and the many fights, frustrations... and madnesses they are prone to. www.assemblyfestival.com | Facebook: assemblyfestival | Twitter: @AssemblyFest

NIRBHAYA
Assembly, Riverside Studios and Poorna Jagannathan On the night of December 16th 2012 - a young woman boarded a bus in urban Delhi with a male friend - heading for home. In the hours that followed, the lives of these two young people; a nation and all who were touched by this night’s shattering events - were changed forever. Dubbed NIRBHAYA (”Fearless One”) by the national press in India, Jyoti Singh Pandey’s unspeakable suffering sent shock waves throughout the world. The streets rose in waves of protest; veils of silence were torn away - as this young woman’s death blazed through an endemic numbness, and penetrated deep into the personal realm. Probing the complexity of what makes such a night possible, internationally acclaimed, playwright and director Yael Farber [Mies Julie] brings a searing new work Nirbhaya to this year’s Fringe. Invited to India for this creation, Farber leads a cast and creative team comprising some of the country’s finest artists. Nirbhaya is a haunting voyage into the realm of personal testimonies culled from the performers (survivors in their own rights) who were powerfully stirred from silence in the wake of Jyoti’s death. Like Farber’s previous award winning testimonial creations [Woman in Waiting (Fringe First Award Winner), Amajuba (Angel Herald Award Winner) and the acclaimed He Left Quietly - Nirbhaya bears powerful witness to the human spirit’s extraordinary capacity for survival, redemption, and enduring change. An unforgettable work that will move, inspire and speak for the turning tide. www.assemblyfestival.com | Facebook: AssemblyFestival | Twitter: @AssemblyFest £10 W

art
at the 2013 Edinburgh Festival with GALLERIES the UK’s leading art magazine
Edinburgh – this beautiful city
of Enlightenment brings a huge display of exhibitions and shows in its vast array of historic and contemporary spaces. Scotland's National Galleries show Man Ray Portraits – very cool – and Through American Eyes: Frederic Church and the Landscape Oil Sketch – for a calming moment – and if you feel like something a bit pagan, then Witches and Wicked Bodies at SNGMA (Modern 2) follows our fascination with these harpies through the ages, from Goya to Paula Rego – magic.
The next generation of artists also gets a chance to showcase their talents as 80 post-graduates of the Edinburgh College of Art exhibit their innovative and sometimes intricate artworks – many prize winning career artists have begun art life here
– a place to spot fame of the future. The grand lady of Scottish art shows her more intimate side with Elizabeth Blackadder: The Nature of Things at The Scottish Gallery, alongside Paul Reid's Mythologies – super-realistic renderings of ancient mythical creatures.
Whatever you see, do not miss the newest and most contemporary building in Edinburgh – although this city is famously ancient it has a wonderfully stylish and aesthetic sense for modern structures and The Chapel of St Albert the Great is a stunning example. For the Festival the Chaplaincy hosts Ana Maria Pacheco's extraordinary sculptures and prints – truly a must see. For more arty information pick up a copy of Galleries magazine free in any art gallery. www.galleries.co.uk
