Local family in ‘best hands’ after using Shriners Hospital program The Shriners Hospitals for Children — Canada, located in Montreal-Quebec, provides world-class care to children from across Canada. The orthopedic team at Shriners Hospitals addresses the surgical and non-surgical needs of children so they can achieve their personal best. So many childhood aspirations are linked to the ability to walk straight and tall, run and move gracefully. Performance depends on how well feet, legs, knees and hips function. Babies born with clubfoot, a limb deficiency or hip dysplasia is among patients seen by the board-certified orthopedic specialists at the Shriners Hospital. Care also extends to children and adolescents who suffer accidental and traumatic injuries that impair function. The course of care is determined individually for each patient. In every case, the goal is to optimize function and put the child on the road to independence. The following is an account of a local family helped by the Shriners Hospital, as written by the mother. My pregnancy was normal by all accounts as nothing seemed to be out of place. Then at 20 weeks I went for an ultrasound and we were informed that we were having a little boy, but that there was something not quite right. Over the next few days and weeks we were told many things from there are a couple of bones missing in his right leg, to he has club foot on the right side, and that this may only be the tip of the iceberg. Duncan was born with Fibular hemimelia. This

is a congenital condition where some of the bones in the legs do not develop. It has affected Duncan’s right lower leg exclusively. The doctors are not sure exactly why this happens (why he didn’t grow all the needed bones). They believe it may have something to do with skeletal development and lack of blood supply during the first 12 weeks. Duncan has a normal knee joint on the right side and only a tibia bone from the knee down. He did not grow a fibular bone at all and the tibia that is there is approximately 40 per cent shorter and curved. He had the pad of a foot and a couple of little toes that are fused together that in what we called his ‘little fin’, but there was no usable bone structure within this little fin. We knew very soon after he was born, that the bone deficiency was only in his right leg and that he was going to need an amputation. After a month after he was born, we were attending the Regina Farmers’ Market, which just started to be held at the Shriners in Regina, and a good family friend asked if we had talked to any of the Shriners about assistance. I honestly had no idea what the Shriners did for children and didn’t even know if he would qualify for assistance. We went over to the table at the entrance where a couple of wonderful men were sitting and started to chat. We told them all about Duncan and they told us all about the hospitals and treatment for children that were available. It sounded too good to be true. We put in an application and we were accepted within a couple of hours.

It has been an amazing experience working with the Shriners. We traveled to Montreal to the Children’s Hospital twice now and both times I’ve been blown away at the level of care. When dealing with the stress of travel and a little one who is going for doctor’s appointments, it’s amazing just knowing that everything is taken care of. We were met at the airport by a Shrine volunteer that works at least two days a week driving patients and their families to and from airports and hotels and the hospital. When we arrive at the hospital the staff are kind and well prepared. They know the children that are arriving from out of province and greet them before they greet the parents. The first two appointments in Montreal were exceptional. We were in the hospital for a total of three hours each time and in that time met the doctor, did some developmental testing, had x-rays, medical photography, met with a psychologist and a financial counselor. It was a fantastic experience. Not once did we feel rushed, the doctor answered all our questions and we felt confident that Duncan is in the best hands. We went back to Montreal twice this winter and he has since had surgery and received his first prosthetic from Hangers in Montreal. He’s just started walking independently this past week and is doing great. I can’t say thank you enough to the Shriners Hospitals for Children and the local Regina Shriners and wives for all they have done for us.

RBC volunteer at Healing Garden Assiniboia RBC staff volunteered at the Healing Garden on June 9, completing various tasks as part of another “RBC Day of Caring”. The RBC staff pulled weeds, performed general tasks and clean up, built a new water fountain, reorganized the dry creek bed and spread many bags of mulch over an evening. During the evening, they presented Bev Monea, the creator of the Healing garden a cheque for $1,000. The monies were used to purchase a new water fountain, many bags of mulch and various other items used in maintaining the garden. The Healing Garden has been in existence for a few years now and is enjoyed by patients of the Assiniboia Union Hospital. On any given evening family members will visit the gardens their loved ones enjoying an evening outside in the beautiful garden. Patients enjoy the beautiful flowers, the many birds visiting the bird feeders, sampling the vegetables in the raised
