Jacob’s Ladder program is a game changer Submitted by Pamela Mytroen Game changers happen to all of us. Many of them we don’t see coming. When Jason and Rilene Johnson’s son Jacob passed away at the age of nine on October 19, 2014, it changed their lives. “We will never know the reason for our loss, but choose to trust God’s plan in all things,” said the Johnsons, who are from the Assiniboia area. The family wanted to find a way to honour their son’s memory. They decided on a climbing wall at Kedleston Gospel Camp on Long Lake and to name it Jacob’s Ladder. They felt it would be a fitting memorial for their son because he loved to be active, play outside and spend time with his friends. The climbing wall would benefit the camp too. Jacob’s parents invited
his friends to attend the dedication of Jacob’s Ladder on August 7, 2016 at Kedleston Gospel Camp. Jacob’s Ladder is over 40 feet high and features four sides of climbing challenges in a variety of skill levels. Climbers are harnessed in and supervised by safety-trained personnel. It is one of the many activities for the children and families to experience at camp, but it has made a big difference to the atmosphere. “Jacob’s Ladder has been a game changer,” said Kerri Lewis, who co-directs the camp with her husband Cam Lewis. The overwhelming support of the local community was also something they did not see coming. “We are so thankful for our community, and all the individuals and the many businesses who donated to Jacob’s Ladder,” said

Dedication of Jacob’s Ladder Nine of Jacob Johnson’s friends attended the dedication of Jacob’s Ladder at the Kedleston Gospel Camp on August 7. From the left are Van Ager, Carter Skarbon, Davin Karst, Quinton Fettes, Brennan Chadwick, Conner Paliuk, Walker Berner, James Ogle and Marshall Ruzicka. the Johnsons. They, along with their boys Ethan and Peyton, wanted to followup by showing everyone where their contributions were spent. One of the many individuals who donated was Jacob’s friend Davin Karst. At his birthday party, Karst asked his friends to bring donations to Jacob’s Ladder instead of gifts. Later, he also initiated his own fundraiser, ordering camo bracelets to remember Jacob. They included his name and the saying “Trust God’s Plan.”
Karst raised about $2,700 for the climbing wall. “It was really cool,” Karst said about Jacob’s Ladder. “There’s no way a grandma could climb it. It’s uber-tall.” Another one of Jacob’s friends, James Ogle, cut his hair, and donated the funds raised to Locks of Love in Jacob’s memory. Jacob was a game changer. He made a difference in his class in school, his family and at camp as well. Jacob was an energetic and fun-loving child. He loved playing outside

with his friends, especially if he could go hunting or practice archery with them. One of his teachers, Patti Mergel, described him in this way, “Faith was number one in Jacob’s life, but he was all about fun, too. His life could be summed up in these words — faith, family, friends, and fun.” Jacob’s grandparents, Kelly and Carol Johnson, added, “Faith in God is what gets us through.” “It still hurts everyday,” said Rilene and Jason Johnson as they remember their son. “Building the ladder in his memory, and seeing his friends climb it did not take the pain away.” “It was great watching them all climb, but it was also difficult seeing the
boys his age on the ladder. We knew that’s how Jacob would have looked, that’s how he would have played.” The ladder stands as a memorial of the many businesses and friends who supported them and continues to offer encouragement. “That our community would remember our child this way, it is such an honour for us.” Four of Jacob’s friends stayed for a week of camp this summer. They are already talking about going back again next year. Jason and Rilene Johnson hope that many more children and families will experience camp and Jacob’s Ladder. Maybe it will be a game changer in their lives.
