CWE brings pro wrestling to Assiniboia Canadian Wrestling Elite is bringing pro wrestling to Assiniboia on Sunday, August 13. The Winnipeg-based CWE is on a tour of 20 different towns in Canada from July 31 to August 20 with The Nightmare on Elite Street Tour. “We really look forward to coming” said Danny Duggan, promoter and performer. “We like to go to small towns. There are big crowds, people get excited.” Duggan noted that in larger markets CWE has to compete with other entertainment events, but in the small towns they become the main event. This pro wrestling event coming to Assiniboia is a full live event with champions, Duggan said. The tour will bring a wellrounded program with special guests, hallof-famers and pro wrestlers from Japan, India, the U.S. as well as from across Canada. It also features special attractions like a special women’s match and a six-man tag team match. The event also features a special guest for the local audience. Travis Kleinfelder, who is originally from Rockglen, is CWE’s
“The Creed Cowboy” Jacob Creed. The evening is headlined by Ring of Honour stars “The Last Real Man” Silas Young and “The Octopus” Jonathan Gresham, GFW/TNA star Mahabali Shera, threetime CWE Champion “Hotshot” Danny Duggan, and ROH star “The Gatekeeper” Kelly Klein. The show also features a very rare appearance by NWA/WCW legend “The Russian Nightmare” Nikita Koloff. Beginning his career as one of the most hated villains in the history of professional wrestling, Koloff went on to become one of the most popular and recognized wrestling stars of the 1980s and a Hall of Fame inductee into the National Wrestling Alliance Hall of Fame. He is best remembered by wrestling fans as one of the most iconic personalities of wrestling’s “golden age”. He is also one of the few superstars to turn down Vince McMahon and his World Wrestling Federation when they overtook the wrestling world decades ago. The CWE tours to all provinces across Canada and they do shows in Canada

and the U.S. In 2017 the CWE saw eight of its stars and alumi rank in the Top 100 Mid Year Report, including ACH, Chase Owens, Lio Rush, Danny Duggan, Michael Elgin, Christopher Daniels, Jason Kincaid and Tommy Lee Curtis. Wrestling has experienced a revival recently. The sport has attracted growing interest since 2009 with a boom in attention in the last three years. There is certainly no other entertain-
ment quite like wrestling. It made popular television entertainment in the 1980s. “There is no substitute for watching it live,” Duggan adds. It is an event that is part sport and part show with its athleteperformers sporting outlandish names and character personas. The Assiniboia event promises to be high-flying drama with every style and genre of wrestling. To cap off the night, fans can join the after-party at Nash’s to meet the wrestlers.
Thomson Lake holds Ladies Golf Tournament The Ladies Open Golf Tournament was hosted under sunny skies at the Thomson Lake Golf Course on July 11. There were 77 golfers participating in this annual tournament for ladies. The first-place winner of the tournament with the highest score of 88 was Denise Woodly. The winner of the horse race
was Kyla Mosse and the runner up was Colleen Andries. The tournament included lunch and supper for the golfers. Each golfer received a gift for participating. The tournament was organized by Debbie Zimmermann and Elaine Bothner. Thomson Lake held two golf tourna-
ments earlier, the Spring Par 3 on June 24 and the Men’s Open on July 8. The ladies participated in Thomson Lake’s first “Golf Fore a Cure” on June 29. The event raised $3,060 for the Cancer Society of Saskatchewan. Over the Canada Day weekend, the Assiniboia and District Shrine Club hosted pancake breakfasts on July 1 and 2 attracting 390 people to the events. There is still a lot of golf to be enjoyed this summer at Thomson Lake. Its golf club hosts a charity golf tournament, St. Joe’s Saturday Night Swing,
on Saturday, July 29. Tee off begins with a shotgun start at 4 p.m. with best ball and 9 holes. The event includes a meal, auctions and prizes. The proceeds of the event are directed to enhancing patient care at the St. Joseph’s Hospital/Foyer d’Youville Foundation in Gravelbourg. The Junior Open golf tournament takes place at the Thomson Lake Regional Park on August 3 starting at 10:30 a.m. Golfers can play nine or 18 holes for cash prizes and a horses race. A meal is included. The Lakecrest Golf Club is sponsoring the tournament.
