New provincial SHA starts Patients and front-line workers in health care should not see any change occur, as the provincial Saskatchewan Health Authority (SHA) replaced all health regions as of Monday. Anyone who is receiving health care or visits any of the health care facilities should not see any change or disruption of service once the SHA took over. “The transition to a single provincial health authority is a significant milestone, as we work to better integrate and coordinate health care services for Saskatchewan people, wherever they live,” said Jim Reiter, Minister of Health. “The focus is on streamlining governance and management across the province. Frontline employees will carry out their day-to-day patient care responsibilities as usual.” All other health boards officially ceased to exist as of Monday morning, as now the SHA will administer health care services across the province, with local executives now taking on new roles. For senior executive positions, it will be “business as usual”, only now they will begin to report to the provincial level “until we’re told otherwise.” By moving to a single provincial health authority, the provincial government will be able to reduce senior administrative staff positions by 86 per cent and reduce senior administrative staff salaries by 80 per cent or $9 million annually. “Maintaining local connections and preserving strong community relationships is a priority for our government and for the Saskatchewan Health Authority,” said Greg Ottenbreit, Minister of Rural and Remote Health. Integrated Pest Management is a decision-making process by Brent Flaten Integrated Pest Management Specialist, Ministry of Agriculture Integrated pest management is defined as a decision-making process that combines multiple strategies (cultural, chemical, mechanical and biological) to suppress pest organisms, such as damaging weeds, diseases or insects. These strategies are based on being effective, economical and environmentally sound. Social licence is society’s trust in, and acceptance of, modern food production. As consumer scrutiny of producer practices increases, using an integrated approach and not solely relying on any one strategy helps build public trust in commercial food production. The steps to integrated pest management include: Prevention: reducing pest numbers primarily through cultural practices. Monitor and forecast: includes identifying pests, knowing pest life cycles and using predictive tools, particularly for diseases and insects. Intervention: scouting fields, knowing economic thresholds and various management strategies that suppress certain pests. Evaluation and recordkeeping: knowing what works and doesn’t work is essential for future planning. Integrated pest management does not rely on one management strategy in these steps, but uses an integrated approach. Management strategies should include a combination of the following: Cultural strategies are preventative and involve managing ecosystems to minimize pest organisms from causing significant economic crop damage. Examples include
diversified crop rotations, seeding rates and variety selection. Chemical strategies are the use of synthetic pesticides, including herbicides, fungicides and insecticides. A continuing issue with using this strategy is the ever-expanding pest resistance (whether they are weed, disease or insect pests), to various pesticides. Another concern that is important to both the agricultural industry and to consumers is the proper use of pesticides. Safe residue levels include significant safety margins that are based on using registered products, at the registered
rates, on the registered crop and pest stages, and that follow the registered preharvest intervals. Proper use of pesticides also includes using appropriate technology to reduce any spray drift and follow labelled buffer zones. Mechanical strategies include strategic tillage, mowing weeds, cleaning grain or milling weed seeds. Biological strategies include scouting for existing beneficial organisms that play an important role in suppressing certain weeds, insects and diseases; or use of biological pesticides to amplify naturally occurring beneficial organisms. 17122SS0 17122SS1
The Assiniboia and District Arts Council has installed a new exhibit for the ARTS UP! series for the month of December. Art works by K to Grade 4 students from the 7th Avenue School are featured in the Kay Cristo Room at the Assiniboia and District Library. The pre-Kindergarten class created Christmas trees. The children used a cardboard tube and acrylic paint to stamp green circles to create a tree. The tree was decorated using collage materials and puffy paint. The Kindergarten class taught by Patty Mergel featured bears in their art works. The students used forks dipped in paint to create bears. The class learned about the different types of bears found in Canada and how they hibernate. The students had a choice of brown, black, or white paint to create their bear. They then added eyes, nose and mouth when the paint dried. Ms. Andrie’s Grade 1A focused on Monarch Butterflies. The students learned that bears and ladybugs hibernate, and rabbits and deer adapt to the cold, but the Monarch Butterfly migrates. The class used a mixture of white glue and black acrylic to paint the wing outline that was left to dry overnight. The next day, each student painted with watercolours. Ms. Mailloux’s Grade 1B class learned about peace and how to solve conflict in a positive way in Social Studies. For Remembrance Day art, the class carried over the theme of peace. First, the students used water colours to paint the background. They chose the colours and experimented with blending them together and layering them. Once the background dried, the students cut out a dove and glued it in place. Finally, they wrote the word “peace around their flying dove and glued the paper on to a black background. The 1C/2A class created Remembrance
Day posters to acknowledge the many people who have served and continue to serve in the military in Canada. Students were encouraged to use words and symbols to represent their understanding of this important day. The art by the Grade 2B class features snowmen that they made before the exhibit. The snowmen were created using cotton balls that were stretched out to look like snow. To make them look like Frosty the Snowman, the students glued on a hat, eyes and buttons. The 2C class made a poppy to remember. The students created torn paper poppies with construction paper Miss Krogen’s Grade 3A was studying tint and shade. The students learned how to change the tint and shade of a colour by adding white or black to the colour they are using to paint. For the exhibit, students captured the magic of winter and created a winter scene as they experimented changing tint and shade using paint for their winter evening sky. The Grade 3C/4A class were studying celebrated artist Vincent Van Gogh. have created works that combine views of their own province with the style of celebrated artist Vincent Van Gogh. The students created art pieces inspired by Saskatchewan and used oil pastels in Van Gogh’s style. They had been studying his use of lines and colours to show motion and encourage emotion. Mrs. Marit’s Grade 4B class had been studying Pablo Picasso and his development of abstract art. The class adopted his cubism style to create autumn trees. They had fun creating geometric leaves and animals. In honour of Remembrance Day, the class designed stunning poppies on a painted background. The poppies were made by dying coffee filters, cutting petal and mounting them on a background. Some glitter was added in the centre to look like poppy seeds.

Physicians are optimistic for health authority launch Continued from Front “While there will be some changes to senior administration, management and support services will continue to be located across the province, and local health system contacts and representatives will still be available to community partners,” said Ottenbreit. When the Saskatchewan Health Authority launches, it will be the largest organization in Saskatchewan, employing more than 44,000 employees and physicians responsible for the delivery of high quality and timely health care for the entire province. Physicians in Saskatchewan are cautiously optimistic as the Saskatchewan Health Authority began its first day of operations. The president of the Saskatchewan Medical Association is encouraged by the level of physician involvement in the management of the new single health authority for the province. “I am pleased to see that on day one of the operations, there are physicians in key positions, and the SHA is moving forward with the physician perspective at the table. The amalgamation of the new authority was a big topic of conversation among physicians in this province over the last 10 months,” said Dr. Joanne Sivertson, president
of the SMA. A dyad leadership structure will see physician executives teamed with an SHA vice-president in four areas: urban health, rural health, northern health and provincial programs. Physicians and vice-presidents will act as a team to lead each area. Dr. Susan Shaw, former director of Physician Advocacy and Leadership with the SMA, is the senior medical officer for the SHA, while Dr. Kevin Wasko, a family doctor based in Swift Current, was named the physician executive for rural health, Dr. Mark Wahba is the physician executive for urban health, and Dr. Paul Babyn is the physician executive for provincial programs. There are also two physicians on the 10-member SHA board of directors: Dr. Preston Smith and Dr. Janet Tootoosis, a former SMA board member and family physician from North Battleford. “Despite the anxieties about change, many physicians see opportunities and are generally positive,” said Dr. Sivertson. “We are willing to work hard to build a more integrated health system in Saskatchewan. A single authority has benefits and ensuring high-quality patient care is delivered equitably across the province needs to be a paramount concern.”
Cereals Corner: Wheat crop quality rated as outstanding Each fall, after the Canadian grain harvest, international buyers are eager to receive information about the quality and end-use characteristics of Canadian grains available for export. This year, the wheat crop quality is outstanding and we are excited to share this information with Canada and the world. The 2017 New Crop Missions delegation is comprised of representatives of the entire value chain: from farmer to exporter, including scientists and representatives from Cereals Canada, the Canadian International Grains Institute and the Canadian Grain Commission. Over the course of the next two months, delegation members will be meeting with customers from around the world to answer their questions about the 2017 Canadian wheat crop, such as baking and milling characteristics. Feedback will also be gathered from customers to ensure that the Canadian grain industry will continue to meet and exceed customersí expectations for years to come. By engaging directly with international buyers, New Crop Missions contribute to ensuring the continued marketability of Canadian grains and maintaining Canada’s international reputation for being a safe and consistent source of grain. “Listening, as well as providing information and support to Canadian customers around the world, is the main focus of the New Crop Missions,” said Cam Dahl, president of Cereals Canada. “During a year that is marked by high quality, it is still important to be there for our customers. The seminars provide a window of opportunity for customers to talk directly with the entire Canadian value chain, which then in turn has an impact on areas like research and innovation.”
“The new crop seminars provide a unique opportunity for face-to-face engagement with customers from many countries worldwide within a short period of time,” said JoAnne Buth, CEO of Canadian International Grains Institute. “Conveying technical information on crop quality
and end-use functionality in an open forum not only helps build trust with customers but ultimately facilitates ongoing two-way communication and a close working relationship with them on behalf of the Canadian industry.” “As the Canadian authority on grain quality and
safety, the Canadian Grain Commission is pleased to take part in New Crop Missions to provide data and expertise on wheat and durum, to assist international buyers in their purchasing and processing activities,” said Patti Miller, chief commissioner of the Canadian Grain Commission.

Is Celebrity Gossip Your ‘Local News’?
ockey news, fashion tips, TV and movie listings, retirement strategies, updates on Celine Dion – all of this information now constitutes local media -- at least according to federal Heritage Minister Melanie Joly. This past week marked a black spot in the history of Canadian newspapers with the closure of three dozen papers, taking out of circulation three million copies of printed newspapers each week and eliminating more than 300 jobs. Joly’s response in Ottawa was a refrain that she has been using more and more lately, saying the federal government is already helping news providers. “We value the importance of journalism and that’s why we invest up to $75-million per year in local media,” she said. This is true only if you use a definition of “local media” unlike any other ever attempted. The minister was referring to the Aid to Publishers program, through which the federal government provides annual grants to printed publications – magazines and non-daily newspapers -- primarily to help with distribution costs. Many Canadians will be surprised by who is getting this support for “local media.” Figures from the 2014-15 fiscal year show: The Hockey News, which primarily covers the NHL, got $1.3 million. TVHebdo got $1.5 million. It provides TV listings in French and is owned by the same company as the TVA television network in Quebec. TV Week, which provides TV listings in British Columbia, got $1 million. Allo Vedettes, which provides Quebec celebrity news and often features Celine Dion on the cover, got $218,721. Good Times, a magazine aimed at retirees, got $588,531. Flare magazine got $408,236; Chatelaine got $1.5 million for its English edition and $848,428 for its French one. Movie Entertainment got $1.5 million. It is produced for subscribers to the paid TV channel The Movie Network, owned by Bell Media. This is a snapshot of one year. The same publications get large grants year after year. Publications such as Macleans get the maximum $1.5 million annually. Chatelaine, which gets money for both its English and French editions, has received $19.3 million in the past eight years. Movie Entertainment has received $11.3 million in the same period. The list goes on and on to hundreds of magazines that get federal funding. It raises all sorts of questions. Why does a TV book distributed by a broadcaster qualify for funding when a TV guide distributed in a daily newspaper does not? And how on earth does giving a subsidy to a promotional magazine for a TV channel qualify as support for local media? The simple fact is that the Aid to Publishers program mostly supports magazines, an industry that for the most part does not have a viable business model without public subsidies. Many community newspapers get money, but relatively little. Those affiliated with NewsMedia Canada got between $3,301 and $124,252 in 2014-15, and averaged $25,831, less than two per cent of what The Hockey News received. Daily newspapers are not eligible. The Assiniboia Times is also not currently eligible to receive these funds. Overall these community papers got about $7.8 million of the $68.9 million handed out. Some went to ethnic, farm and religious publications. The Catholic Register got $403,355; The Western Producer got $1.2 million. The bulk -- $53.4 million -- went to magazines. Some individual magazine companies get more per year than all community newspapers combined. TVA Publications got about $7.5 million this year, as did Transcontinental Media. Rogers Media, publisher of Chatelaine , Macleans and other magazines, got $8.9 million in 2016. Readers Digest got $3 million this year for its related publications. The Aid to Publishers program is being revamped. It’s unclear what the new qualification criteria will be or whether the program will get any more money. However, the review is doomed to failure unless the federal government understands that it is not currently supporting local news media in any meaningful way and that the current funding, even if redistributed, will do little to help reporting in local communities across Canada. We have not heard this from Joly. In fact, her Tweeted response to this week’s closures suggested she still does not understand what is happening in local media, where collapsing revenues are forcing cuts in reporting across all traditional news outlets. “We know Canadians care about their local media and we will continue to support it,” Joly Tweeted. “The decision to swap and shut down these community papers on the same day is cynical and disappointing. Our thoughts are with the hundreds of workers and their families affected by these closures.” The closures this week were not cynical. There were inevitable in a challenged business in which print newspaper revenues have fallen dramatically. We will see more of them. What they mean for many communities is less reporting about what is happening in people’s back yards. It’s unlikely that people in those communities will be comforted by Joly’s claim that her government supports local media.
Kindred live together in unity Right now, as I’m typing, my Christian sisters and brothers from all the churches in Assiniboia are gathering here at Messiah to take their turn at reading aloud a portion of the Bible. Together we are witnessing our faith to one another and to the world; a faith in Jesus Christ, who prayed for us about 2000 years ago, that we would be one in him. Together, over 10 days, we are reading the whole Bible. There is something truly holy happening here, where God’s word and Holy Spirit are at work in the lives of each one who reads and each one who listens. Having read certain parts of the Bible many times, many of us are hearing familiar readings as if for the first time. How good and pleasant indeed, that God is so faithful. I don’t believe we all have to be one church to be one in Jesus. What I see here in Assiniboia is a revival of Jesus’ prayer that we be one. God is creating new possibilities for our relationships to deepen, for our people, which are the church, to love one another.
Acts 2:44-46 “All who believed were together and had all things in common; they would sell their possessions and goods and distribute the proceeds to all, as any had need. Day by day, as they spent much time together in the temple, they broke bread at home and ate their food with glad and generous hearts,” I have also seen what God does for families who center their lives on God. I have worked for employers who gathered with staff for prayer and blessing for their new place of business and who commit their business to God. That commitment played out as a business practice of loving God and loving their neighbour. As I sit and listen to someone read the Bible for me, I dream about what God will do for our whole community, and for our world. Pick up God’s word, ask someone to read it for you, or read it to someone you care about. You too may begin to dream of new possibilities. May God bless your desire to read the Bible; for yourself and for others. From the Messiah Lutheran family.

OBITUARIES
OBITUARIES “Beth” Elizabeth Foley (nee Bains)
Beth Foley of Coronach, Saskatchewan, passed away October 31, 2017 at the Coronach Health Centre. Beth was a farm girl all her life. She was one of six children. All six, over the years, were born in her mother’s bedroom on the farm south of Semans, Saskatchewan. Each of these births was usually attended by local midwife, Mrs. B. After the birthing event was complete, Dr. C. would drop by to check on the newborn?s health. Dr. C. would then celebrate the “blessed event” by having a few drinks and would spend the rest of his visit chasing the midwife around the house. Beth?s Dad had come from Newcastle, England when he was 18 years old. He built a sod shack and spent his first summer breaking land with horses and a walking plow. Beth’s Mom came from Liverpool, England to work in a local hospital. Beth’s folks married at Govan in 1917. As World War II began in the late 1930’s, Beth was part of the Clear Lake High School Tap Dancing Troupe. This troupe of six girls in white military uniforms sold Victory Bonds by performing on stage at regional movie theatres for a few minutes just before the show started. Additionally, three of Beth?s brothers; Richard, George and John fought in World War II for its entire duration. Beth rolled into town on the C.P.R. passenger train in August 1940. She never left until now. She was 20 years old and had come to teach at Hart School, which was located 10 miles north of Coronach. She met Martin Foley at one of the school dances at Hart school. Beth and Martin were married at Fife Lake on November 4, 1942. Beth and Martin were active in 4-H clubs, the Coronach Credit Union Board, curling and other sports events. Beth enjoyed farming, gardening, canning, quilting, picking berries and the Art Club. Additionally, she somehow managed to be a member of both the Catholic Women’s League and the Anglican Church Women simultaneously for many years. For eleven years, Beth was secretary of the Coronach DropIn-Centre while Andy Giraudier, who succeeded her at Hart School historically, was President. Beth travelled to England a couple of times and did enjoy the occasional trip south in the winter, especially to locations where she could loot the casinos with friends and neighbors from the Coronach area. Beth was very involved in the lives of her loving sons and was extremely proud of her three grandchildren and their accomplishments, talking about them to anyone who would listen. When her health failed in December 2015, Beth moved first to the Ross-Payant Nursing Home in Assiniboia for several months before transferring to the Coronach Health Centre. She received excellent care at both facilities. While her health permitted, she enjoyed socializing with fellow residents and participated fully in the Heath Centre’s activities. In the evenings, she looked forward to a little game of cards. Beth reached out and fully embraced her life. She was a warm, loving wife, mother, grandmother and community member who cared a lot about people of all ages. Beth was predeceased by her husband Martin Foley (deceased in 1991), her parents Arthur Bains and Meta (Laughlin) Bains, infant son Dale, sister Dorothy Henry/Berry, brothers John Bains, George Bains, Richard Bains and Norman Bains. Left to mourn are her three sons: Conrad of Burnaby, Barry of Coronach and Bryan (Rosemary) of Quill Lake. She will be sadly missed by her three grandchildren: Tyler of Quill Lake, Megan (Mike Hiltz) of Calgary and Ryan of Quill Lake, as well as numerous relatives and many close friends. The Funeral Mass was celebrated at Coronach Catholic Church on November 10, 2017. Father Dennis Remot was Celebrant with Father Joseph Strohoffer as Co-celebrant. Servers were Kali Buckler and Ashton Rousseau. Linda Poirier performed a series of beautiful musical selections during the service. Rosemary Foley read the Tribute. Megan Foley read the First Reading. Gail Foley read the Responsorial Psalm. Molly Korbo read the Second Reading. Archie Foley read the Prayers of the Faithful. Pallbearers were: Brian Wrolson, David Brenner, Jim Foley, Rick Cairns, Greg Foley and Jason Korbo. Following interment in Coronach Municipal Cemetery, the Coronach C.W.L. organized an impressive lunch and social hour at the Coronach Drop-In-Centre. Memorials were received for the Coronach & Area Health Centre. Arrangements entrusted to Ross Funeral Service, Assiniboia, SK. Ronald Nicholson passed away on November 10, 2017, at the Ross Payant Centennial Home, Assiniboia, Saskatchewan, at the age of 76 years. He was the eldest and last surviving son of George and Fannie (nee Tonita) Nicholson. Ron was born on May 25, 1941, in the Flintoft district. Hard work and determination was instilled at a young age. During his time at school, it was his job to collect the coal in the coal pail and light the furnace. While working in the produce department at the Assiniboia Co-op, Ron met his soul mate, Donna Hanson, when he got the nerve to ask her for a date. His Romanian charm worked, and they married on September 15, 1962. He continued with the Co-op, changing from produce to the fuel department. In 1968, they welcomed their first child into the world, son Greg. Shortly after they moved to the farm in the Wood Mountain district. In 1971, they were blessed with their second child, daughter Leslie. Outside of the farm, Ron worked for Minovitch Cattle Company and later as a Livestock Brand Inspector in both the Wood Mountain and Assiniboia Stockyards. Over the years Ron and Donna built up their farm through risk-taking and a lot of hard work and determination. Ron was a passionate farmer, rancher, and supporter of the community. The 4-H club was a lifelong passion for Ron. He was the leader of the 4-H club for several years and recruited many families to the organization. In 2008, Ron and Donna moved to Assiniboia. Ron continued to be actively involved in the farm. He enjoyed his daily visits to the local businesses. Always remember Ron’s favorite saying “If you think you should?” He is predeceased by his parents, George and Fannie; brothers, Kenneth, Kelvin, and Clinton. He is survived by his wife, Donna; his son and daughter-in-law, Greg and Raelynn, grandsons, Cooper and Mason; his daughter and son-in-law, Leslie and Victor, grandchildren children, Hayden and Kennedy. A Celebration of Life was held on Friday, November 17, 2017, 2:00 pm at the Assiniboia Alliance Church, with Lionel Moffatt, officiating. Eulogy was given by Leslie Nicholson and Greg Nicholson. The poem “Close The Gate” was recited by Mason Nicholson. Music was shared by Scott Heatcoat, Gordon Zahariuk, Lori Okraincee. Pallbearers were; Cooper Nicholson, Corbin Selody, Brian Mergel, Kelly Kiel, Lee Peterson, and Dave Landa. Honorary Pallbearers included; Ritchie and Donna Hordenchuk, Gordon and Arlene Zaharuik, Dick and Kay Richards, Lloyd Heatcoat & Colleen Bourassa, Al & Jocelyn Beauregaurd, Floraine Zahariuk, Sharon Caragata, Laverne Karst, Kay & Ed Zado. Lunch and fellowship followed. Interment at Mount Hope Cemetery, Assiniboia, Saskatchewan. Memorial donations in Ron’s memory to the Rockglen and District 4-H Club - Beef Project, were greatly appreciated. Online condolences may be shared at www.pichehawkinsgrondinfuneralchapels.ca

Glentworth hosts curling clinic A curling clinic was held at Glentworth Curling Rink on November 12. Leading the clinic were Penny (Roy) Barker, the 2017 Provincial Ladies Curling Champion, and coach Leon Roy of Moose Jaw. The clinic also featured warmup exercises emphasizing that “everything starts in the hack”, which is the foundation of the game. There were 31 students and adults, ranging in age from seven to early sixties, who took in the clinic and received valuable information about curling. Leon Roy, who was born and raised in the Fir Mountain area, said that it was great to give back to the community.

NEED NEW FURNITURE FOR CHRISTMAS? Community rallies to fight huge prairie fire Help Wanted Driver/Yardman CALL NOW! 306-642-5566
Strong winds helped to fuel a monster prairie fire near Glenworth on September 4. But thanks to an immense community volunteer effort, the fierce fire was contained. At least three ranches were affected. Six Mile Ranch was the hardest hit losing 3,200 acres of its best fall grazing grass. The fire was reportedly started in the daytime by a spark from a swather in a neighbouring field that was rapidly spread through some of the field by the strong wind and into grass pastureland. Very quickly the fire grew out of control on the tinder dry prairie grass. It developed into a fire that was almost eight miles wide. It was difficult not to notice the huge wall of dark flames being whipped up by the high winds that day. The community rallied to help fight the fire. Word spread rapidly by phone and Facebook. Volunteer fire departments $ 99 from Mankota, Glenworth and Kildeer arrived with grass fire-fighting equipment. Over 300 ranchers in the area flocked to the scene to help bringing their own water tanks. “Watching rural families come together is truly amazing,” said Corinne Gibson, whose ranch was most affected. Some of the volunteers controlled the advance of flames. It was difficult to see the fire line because of the intense smoke. Graders plowed furrows to stop the spread of the fire. Others patrolled the perimeters to keep the fire contained. Still others in the local community pitched in in the background by bringing food, coffee and

Volunteers continued fighting the fire until about 10 p.m. when it was brought under control. The few remaining hotspots were monitored overnight and into the next day. Miraculously, there were no animals injured on the cattle pasture that burned and no human injuries. The Gibsons were able to move most of their 300 cattle out of the pasture area when the fire started. However, the frightened cattle scattered and the

family spent days searching for them and rounding them up. The Gibsons are now assessing the damage having lost their best grass to the fire. They face an immediate problem of where to locate these cattle this fall and how to feed them over winter.
