Sask Party race to determine new premier Continued from Front One of the budget announcements that BeaudryMellor would like to reverse is the addition of PST on insurance. “We have done some great things as a party, and have had a very strong premier, but we need to think about positioning Saskatchewan more globally, and being an encomomic powerhouse in Canada,” said Beaudry-Mellor. Moe is proposing to establish a new cabinet position, a ministry of International Trade and Exports, along with establishing a Premier’s advisory council on international trade and exports which would include stakeholders representing the province’s exporting businesses and industries. In his proposal, the Premier’s Council “would provide input on a strategic trade missions plan that will map out how Saskatchewan’s government can develop and grow relationships that are crucial for increasing our private sector’s international exports,” he said.
The new minister is proposed to be responsible for international trade and exports, and will be mandated with establishing the province’s presence in the countries that account for the largest share of Saskatchewan’s exports. In spite of the challenges to the economy, Moe said the plan is to bring the budget back to a balanced state within three years. Some of Koch’s platform points include creating a competitive business environment, promoting free market solutions, taking care of the most vulnerable in society, making science-based decisions, running a fiscally responsible government, and ensuring all Saskatchewan residents benefit from the province’s growth and prosperity. On the province’s finances, Koch said she wants to see a return to a balanced budget, but feels it will take a year longer than Premier Wall had initially set out, and she wants to revisit the provincial sales tax on insurance, saying this was something the party should have con-
sidered more carefully before putting into the budget. “I think this leadership race was one of the best things to happen, as we’re seeing a lot of young people get involved,” said Koch, noting she’s learned from her two daughters (aged 21 and 24) that involvement via social media will be a key to reaching teens and young adults. The leadership convention is being held at the Prairieland Park Convention Centre in Saskatoon, and the first announcement of results is expected to be made around 6 p.m. on Saturday, January 27, with first speech by the new premier to follow. The Saskatchewan Party had previously announced they had 27,125 party members eligible to vote in the January 27 election at the leadership convention at Prairieland Park in Saskatoon. It was reported that membership had nearly tripled from the 9,500 members it had at the time of Premier Brad Wall’s retirement announcement on August 10, 2017.
New premier to be elected The new premier of the province will be determined on Saturday, January 27, after an election during the Sask Party leadership campaign. The five candidates are Alanna Koch, Scott Moe, Ken Cheveldayoff, Tina Beaudry-Mellor and Gord Wyant.

By Wes Bloom It’s just possible that the next Premier of Saskatchewan blew into the town on a northwest wind recently. Gord Wyant, a lawyer and Saskatchewan Party leadership ‘hopeful’ from Saskatoon, made a brief appearance in Assiniboia and the south country early in the new year. He was accompanied by former MLA for this constituency, ‘Yogi’ (Jim) Huyghebaert from Glentworth. ‘Yogi’ has thrown his support firmly behind Gord Wyant, and endorsed Wyant’s campaign bid to become the new leader of the Sask Party and the next Premier of Saskatchewan. Wyant, once a member of the Liberal Party of Canada, but now — for the time being, at least — is a self professed ‘moderate’ in the Saskatchewan Party. “I am slightly more moderate than the Premier, (Brad Wall) who is a little ‘offcenter’ to the ‘right’ of the party”, he said. Wyant is quick to point out that he was a ‘Martin’ Liberal, back in the day, but never a modern day ‘Trudeau’ Liberal. Robin Bellamy, a small business owner from Saskatoon and one of the ‘founding fathers’ of the Saskatchewan Party, said in a recent interview that Gord Wyant was “a good man ... a man of integrity ... That’s a wonderful quality to have in the office of the Premier”. Yogi Huyghebaert, retired MLA for this constituency, said in a phone interview, that he threw his support behind Gord Wyant for a number of reasons. He stated that “... In the last 10 years, Saskatchewan has become a very prominent and highly respected leader on the ‘world stage’. Gord Wyant is the best choice of all leadership candidates to perpetuate that highly important and prestigious position”. He also said that, “Over the years, Gord (Wyant) has been a huge supporter and staunch defender of my initiates in the ‘House’ concerning veterans and the military, two topics that are very near and dear to my heart. For this reason alone, he deserves my support”. ‘Yogi’ stated that he has watched Wyant carefully over their many years of friendship. ”He handles himself extremely well in the House of Commons, and he also performed
well in the various Cabinet positions that he held. Gord is definitely the best person to lead Saskatchewan into the future”. When asked what his focus and direction might be if he won the Sask Party leadership race and became the next Premier of Saskatchewan, Wyant stated that the challenge would be to reach out in a serious effort to reunite the party. He would make this a priority. He said that the public’s perception is that the party has drifted slightly away from its roots, so it’s “... important to get back to our ‘founding’ principles’. We need to return to our grass roots”. Wyant admitted that the party’s decision concerning STC may have been poorly thought out. “We need to move slowly and carefully forward from where we are with this and try to rectify the problems we are currently experiencing”. Regarding Saskatchewan’s position on the ‘carbon tax issue’, Wyant stated: “We need to remember the people and economy of southeastern Saskatchewan and the number of jobs that are at stake there. We do, however, need to cut our current emissions in half by the year 2030. This will be a serious challenge. We need to find a method - as quickly and as carefully as possible - to introduce new technologies into our economy and phase out some of the old, expensive, outdated ones.” “We don’t want to disrupt the economy and the lives of those involved in a way that might cause chaos and panic. Any decisions we make will have long-term consequences and effects. If we move ahead too quickly with a poorly thought out strategy, the results could be disastrous.” “My first ‘job’ in the office of the Premier, would be to sit down with the Minister of Finance to revisit, review, and re-evaluate some of the recent decisions that have been made. We would likely also take a look at Caucus and current Cabinet positions to see if changes are warranted. Other areas of priority will be Education and Mental Health. These are critical to the future of our province. We need to take care of the ‘vulnerable’ in our society. We need to take care of our Seniors and youth”!

SGI sets actual year definition for antique vehicles SGI has set the definition of an antique vehicle, changing from “vehicles 30 years old or older” to “vehicles that are model year 1987 and older” as of January 1. This change means vehicles with a model year of 1988 and newer will not be eligible for “Antique Use”. The change does not impact any vehicles currently registered with “Antique Use”. “This change is about addressing an imbalance,” said Penny McCune, Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of the Auto Fund. “The intent of the Antique Use class, when originally created, was to accommodate vintage vehicles that were used infrequently – for parades, special occasions or Sunday drives. But we’re seeing more and more antique-registered vehicles driven as regular-use vehicles; daily in many cases. Because they’re insured at such a low cost, this does not adequately provide for the injury and liability claim payouts in the event of a collision.” While physical damage coverage for antique vehicles is limited to $800, full liability and injury benefits are provided. All antique vehicles pay the same insurance premium ($85 plus PST annually), regardless of vehicle make or body style. The number of vehicles registered as antique in Saskatchewan has increased by 55 per cent over the past five years and the total number of vehicles registered as antique involved in claims has grown by 31 per cent since 2011. After SGI consulted with car clubs and antique vehicle enthusiasts, it was decided that the fairest option to address this imbalance was to cap the antique class at the 1987 model year, rather than increase rates for all antique vehicles. If your vehicle is a true vintage vehicle that is only used on special occasions, there are
other registration options available. For example, the vehicle could be registered shortterm (i.e. during the summer months). Other options for vehicles that are being used occasionally are to purchase 24-hour or eight-day permits. Your motor licence issuer can help you with the best option for your situation. Further information on antique vehicle registration is available at www.sgi.sk.ca.
