The Assiniboia Trade Expo held April 20-21 at the Prince of Wales Cultural and Recreational Centre was once again a huge success for the Assiniboia and District Chamber of Commerce. With over 70 participating booths on hand, there were over 700 visitors through the gates. According to organizers, the profitable event provides a great profile of the many local businesses. There was also other activities to enjoy such as the Spring Fashion Show, an RCMP rollover demo and free movie for kids sponsored by Westcor Contracting. For those with a sweet tooth, many enjoyed the fudge booth. Media sponsors this year included 800 CHAB, Country 100 and the Assiniboia Times. The Trade Expo is an event held every second year. New legislation encourages value-added agricultural investment Last week Trade and Export Development Minister Jeremy Harrison introduced Bill 125, The Saskatchewan Value-Added Agriculture Incentive, for first reading in the Saskatchewan Legislature. The new incentive, announced as part of the 2018-19 Budget, is designed to improve investment attraction and retention outcomes in the province’s value-added agriculture sector. It offers a 15 per cent non-refundable tax credit for value-added agriculture facilities that make a significant capital investment to expand production capacity. “Robust economic growth and new investment in key sectors is crucial to Saskatchewan’s people and their communities,” Harrison said. “To accomplish this, we must continually find new ways to foster a competitive business environment in our province.”

Qualifying projects include new and existing valueadded agricultural facilities. To be eligible, a project must have $10 million in new capital expenditures, demonstrate that capital expenditures were made for the purposes of increasing productive capacity, and meet the definition of value-added agriculture. Potential examples include pea protein processors, oat milling operations, malt producers, or cannabis oil processing facilities. It is designed that this incentive will be used in addition to other existing incentives in Saskatchewan a project could also qualify for. Redemption of the benefits is limited to 20 per cent in year one after the facility enters operation, 30 per cent in year two, and 50 per cent in year three. There will be a maximum carry-forward of 10 years on any remaining credit amount. The program will begin accepting applications in mid to late 2018.

CANADIAN PRAIRIE TOUR ~ JUNE 2018
A4 Friday, April 27, 2018 - The Times
Weather looks ready to limit seeding options for farmers By Calvin Daniels, Yorkton This Week It is beginning to feel like 2018 may be the year of unending winter. There is some hope in the forecast that on the Canadian Prairies at least we are inching closer to normal temperatures. Of course normal in terms of temperature is basically an approximation which happens more years than not, so discounting extremes you sit somewhere in the middle of things. A meteorologist might have a different explanation, but in general terms normal temperatures are more guideline than expected occurrence. But even when you factor that into things, this winter is hanging on rather more tenaciously than usual. According to Saskatoon-based Saskatchewan Research Council climate researcher Virginia Wittrock, March was cold, something which anecdotally most of us are nodding in agreement with. In a www.producer.com story, Wittrock noted March had 20 days with average daily temperatures below the 30-year norm, based on data recorded between 1981 and 2010. The first two weeks of April weren’t much better as he also pointed out that 12 of the first 13 days in April had daily average temperatures also below the 1981-2010 average. The cold weather is not localized to the Canadian Prairies either. Opening day at Wrigley Field in Chicago was postponed for the Cubs because of snow. A picture of the famous baseball stadium covered in snow circulated widely on social media. If you follow the Toronto Blue Jays, then you have seen a number of players masked with balaclavas to fend off the cold during games this spring. There have been 20 postponed baseball games this season al-

ready, while last season there was only 26 the whole year. Ontario was also hit by a major storm. A powerful Colorado low continues to deliver strong winds, ice pellets, freezing rain and heavy rain across southern Ontario, leaving tens of thousands without power, reported www.theweathernetwork.com. “Nearly 47,000 Hydro One customers were without power. Meanwhile, more than 700 crashes in the Greater Toronto Area have been reported since the storm began,” according to Ontario Provincial Police Sgt. Kerry Schmidt. The naysayers will be suggesting the continued cold is showing global warming is a myth, but it more accurately supports that we are undergoing climate change more dramatic than any long term cycles would suggest as normal. The immediate effect for agriculture on the Prairies will be to delay seeding how long depending on what weather we experience over the next month. Farmers are going to have a smaller prime window to seed, and if the weather does not improve quickly it will force changes in crop choices, with moves to shorter season crops a must. But along with seeding delays, there are a number of other activities affected. The Fort Qu’Appelle Fish Culture Station for example is keeping fish alive in tanks longer than normal because ice cover on lakes has delayed stocking. Then you have the golf courses likely to experience a shorter play season simply because greens are going to have a late start in terms of being in play condition. It all again reinforces how much of what we do relies on weather over which we have no control.
Mossbank break-in under investigation by the RCMP Sgt. Donald Duplissea, commander of the Assiniboia detachment of the RCMP, reported on an investigation involving several individuals who attempted to break into a business in Mossbank in the very early morning of Monday, April 23. While they were unsuccessful in their attempt to gain entry, they fled the scene in a ‘stolen’ dark blue 2007 Dodge Ram 3500 pick-up truck, similar to the one shown here. If you have information regarding this or any other crime in the area, please contact the Assiniboia Detachment of the RCMP at (306) 642-7110. You may also call Saskatchewan Crime Stoppers
at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477), or text SaskTel@*8477. Tips can also be submitted on-line at www.saskcrimestoppers.com.

A Great Season
ver the past six years, I’ve had a lot of fun coaching volleyball whether with school teams, being an assistant coach to club teams, or an assistant coach at the Saskatchewan Summer Games in Estevan a couple of years ago. It’s been a whirlwind, but I now have 13 seasons of coaching volleyball under my belt. This particular season has been quite exciting for me. It was the first season that I took on a head-coaching gig for club volleyball. I have been in that role for the past six years at Arcola School for junior teams; but club volleyball is a little more competitive and I had always just been content being the assistant coach in that realm. Heading into the season, I had a vision for what I wanted to do. I’d encourage the multisport approach and attempt to make volleyball not too demanding on the kids. I wanted to leave them wanting more but showing them skills, encouraging them in competition, and hoping they’d bring a little desire and drive. I think that desire and drive are keys to doing well in a competitive situation. I must say this young group has been a blast to coach. Although we only practiced once a week, they did have other things on the go like dance, curling, basketball, and more. But the girls managed to go from not being ranked to 4th place at our first Sask. Cup. By our second Sask. Cup, other teams started to come watch our games a little bit and the girls managed to win 4th. It was huge to have not gained or lost any ground playing amongst the best of the province especially with one practice a week. Other teams would be going at least two, maybe even three times a week. Then at the third Sask. Cup, the girls managed to work their way to the final where they lost to JCVC Crush, but what an accomplishment with a second place finish. At provincials, they went in very determined and finished fourth out of 37 teams in their age group in the province – a huge accomplishment. Also the semi-final match against the team went on to win gold, and we only lost in the third set by four points. It’s been so much fun watching their growth as the season progressed. That’s the ideal coaching plan – to constantly improve throughout the season, which they absolutely did. They developed a lot, but one of their biggest assets was their desire. They wanted to succeed and they made the most of the practices they did have working hard all season. I’d like to thank all the parents for their support over the season, my assistant coaches Tracy Barsi, Eugene Brown, and Krista Light, and our team manager Della Dube. Most importantly though thank you to the girls for working so hard throughout! It was a phenomenal year. I also want to thank Leslie Joorisity-Dickie, coach of the Weyburn 14U. I’ve gotten to know her over the last couple of years and although we were rivals on the court she’s a great role model to have. I have attempted to take on some of her coaching style as I develop my own.
Well April started out on a sad note with the Humboldt Broncos bus crash, which was a very sad event. I would like to thank Darla Prefontaine and Kerri Martin for organizing the Vigil at the Civic Centre on April 8 and thanks to everyone who participated and attended. On a happier note the circus was in town on April 10, which was well attended and enjoyed. On the same day, the RCMP held a community consultation meeting, also well attended with lots of questions, suggestions and comments. At our April 16 Council meeting, we approved our 2018 Operational and Capital Budgets. CAO Carol White and myself presented and discussed this at the Chamber of Commerce AGM on April 24. The Budget package will be available for viewing on our website in the near future along with an informa-
tion brochure. On April 18, we held our Annual Volunteer Recognition and Awards Supper with 180 volunteers in attendance. The Chamber of Commerce held their bi-annual Trade Show on April 20 & 21 with a great turn out of booths and visitors. With spring finally here, the annual pothole issue is once again with us. Our Public Works staff started on April 19 using the hot mix machine and hopefully if the weather holds they will be able to cover the whole town. P.S. The Red Hat Society will be hosting their Annual Convention May 4-6 in Assiniboia this year. They are a group of ladies who enrich their lives through the power of fun and friendship. I hope you will make them feel welcome and that they will feel the heart of our community.

God wants you alive!
A ‘spring’ look during fashion show Eleven models were part of the fashion show held at the Assiniboia Trade Expo with clothing provided by Kelli’s Fashion.
The Rev. Bob Scott, Apostolic Church of Pentecost of Canada God is our refuge and strength, an everpresent help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear, though the earth give way and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea, though its waters roar and foam and the mountains quake with their surging. – Psalm 46:1 (NIV) “Do you want to go to Heaven?” It’s a question asked on radio and TV, as well as some church services. Most will answer “yes.” But the query points us in a wrong direction. The more important question is what we are going to do with the life we are living here and now. We all know folks who are challenged by the prospect of facing life’s ups and downs for just one more day. What can the Church offer people in those circumstances? Where can we find strength,
comfort, assurance, and all the rest of the things we need to face life’s challenges? We must develop a greater confidence in the promises and power of God. We need to trust Him, right now, to be the controlling, attitude-changing influence in our lives. A quick ‘salvation prayer’ won’t do. Too many people walk away from that experience unregenerated and ill equipped for life as it was intended. We should pray instead for the One who is our “refuge and strength” to have control of all of life. God has the power and, more importantly, the desire to help us face life today and in the future. That is a most compelling consideration. Certainly, it is comforting to know that there will be a place in Heaven for believers when we leave this life. It’s only part of the package, though. This can be a life free of regret. Eternal life can begin here and now. Trust in Jesus so you can REALLY live.
STS South Central Chapter hold meetings The South Central chapter of the Superannuated Teachers of Saskatchewan (STS) consists primarily of retired teachers of the former Golden Plains, Borderland and Red Cross Trail School Divisions. In Rockglen on April 10, they held their first of three annual meetings. After gathering together at the St. John’s Hall at 11 a.m. to get re-acquainted and enjoy a delicious lunch, chapter members consisting of President Diane Marchand along with Lois Giraudier, Donna Morris, and Roger Marchand were then entertained with a musical number with dance and original lyrics by local students from grade 3-5 classes, along with teacher Marina Thomson.
The students also displayed a great deal of confidence as they asked questions to the former teachers about their past classroom experiences. All in all, the presentations and handmade greeting cards with well wishes were very much enjoyed and appreciated by all. The business meeting began with Diane Marchand calling for a moment of silence for member and former president Michael Klein. The agenda included the confirmation of the local chapter at the 45th STS Annual General Meeting in Saskatoon May 8-10 where Roger Marchand of Gravelbourg would be receiving an Honorary Life Membership award. The finalizing of the school history book in
print form, on-line and CD will be discussed at the Tuesday, June 26 meeting to be held in Assiniboia. STS has 40 Chapters in Saskatchewan as well as two in British Columbia. Chapters meet regularly to discuss issues of concern, to maintain valued contacts with former colleagues, and to enjoy a time of fellowship. Chapter activities differ widely and may include speakers, tours, picnics, potluck meals, socials, parties, banquets, or tournaments. Many chapters are also active in volunteer work within their communities with activities such as UNICEF, Meals-on-Wheels, hospital visiting as well as sharing community history and folklore.
Saskatchewan residents eligible for free Naloxone kits Naloxone is a medication that, when administered properly, can rapidly reverse the effects of an opioid overdose. Over the past year, the focus of the Take Home Naloxone (THN) program has been ensuring naloxone was available in most areas of the province, and is now established in 15 communities including Saskatoon, Regina, North Battleford, Kamsack, Yorkton, Prince Albert, Moose Jaw, Weyburn, Estevan, Kindersley, Buffalo Narrows, Swift Current, Melfort, Nipawin and Tisdale. In addition, there are currently 29 communities with 84 pharmacies across Saskatchewan where THN kits are available for purchase including Assiniboia Shoppers Drug Mart and Southland Co-op Pharmacy. There
is no prescription required to purchase a kit, however a pharmacist must be consulted before a purchase is made. THN kits, education and training are also currently available through the Saskatchewan Health Authority (SHA). Nearly 600 THN kits have been provided to individuals through this program and more than 1,900 individuals have received training. THN is a publically funded program, and will be expanding to provide free kits to people who may witness an overdose, including friends and family members of those at risk. It is important to note that even after naloxone is administered, further medical treatment should include calling 911 immediately if you suspect an overdose.
“We believe that even one opioid related death is too many,” Health Minister Jim Reiter said. “Making Take Home Naloxone kits available free of charge to anyone who may need them has the potential to save lives.” As part of efforts to reach as many people as possible, the Ministry of Health and SHA are also working to ensure key community-based organizations are part of the expansion. The potential to integrate nasal spray into the program will also be examined. The province spends more than $46 million annually on a wide range of addictions services. An additional $400,000 for addictions support was part of the 2018-19 budget investment in mental health and addictions.

Local volunteers recognized for their service
By Wes Bloom National Volunteer Week was celebreated in Canada during April 7 to 13. This year’s theme was: “Celebrate the Value of Volunteering”. Volunteer Week is a time to recognize, celebrate, and say “thank you” to Canada’s estimated 12.7 million volunteers. Volunteering is often seen to be a selfless act: one gives one’s time, skills, experience, and passion to help others, without ever expecting anything in return. While volunteering is a form of service in its purest form, many volunteers say: “We receive so much more than we give”. From opportunities to develop new skills, to finding deep and meaningful personal relationships and connections, the magic of volunteering is simply that it creates social and economic value for all. The Town of Assiniboia sponsored and hosted a special Awards Night at the Prince of Wales Cultural and Recreation Centre on April 18, recognizing several individuals who demonstrate outstanding service toward the community. The town also partnered with the Saskatchewan Health Authority, once known

as the Five Hills Health Region, to host this gala evening and event. Three dedicated volunteers were recognized and presented with Rural, Urban, and Youth Volunteer Recognition Awards. More than 200 people attended the event to show their gratitude and appreciation. Recipients of the awards were selected on the basis of their outstanding volunteer contributions benefiting the community, and for their dedicated commitment to community development and volunteerism - either personally or as part of a service club. Shirley Punga, who is from Assiniboia, but recently moved to Moose Jaw, was given the Urban Volunteer Recognition award for 2018. Punga was recognized primarily for her work with the 55 Club, and the Ladies Auxiliary for Long Term Care. Gail Delorme received the Rural Volunteer Recognition award for her work as organizer of the annual Terry Fox Run in the region, as well as her work organizing the ‘Better Together’ food drive which takes place every year at Halloween. Delorme was also honoured for her tireless work in numerous ’ministries’ within

St. George’s Catholic Church. Last, but certainly not least, was the Youth Volunteer Recognition award given to Logan Fettes, a grade 12 student at ACHS. Fettes was recognized for his volunteer work as a youth baseball coach with 5 and 6 year olds and his work as a Bantam Basketball assistant coach. Planning to attend the U of R this fall, he is also a guest instructor, referee, and program volunteer for numerous other sports. Kerri Martin, Executive Assistant and Marketing Coordinator, helped plan the Awards night for the Town of Assiniboia and summed up the evening, “Assiniboia is so fortunate to have so many (capable) volunteers contributing so much to this wonderful community.”

MEN’S DRESSbySHOES
Make sure you file a tax return: Always file, because you could be entitled to other credits, deductions and benefits that get triggered by your tax return such as GST/ HST credits. If you’re receiving Guaranteed Income Supplement (GIS) through Old Age Security, make sure to file on time to ensure their benefits continue uninterrupted.
Income split and save: You’re allowed to split up to half of your eligible pension income with a spouse or common-law partner. Income splitting allows some seniors to enjoy a significant tax reduction. In the situation where the lower-income spouse has very little income, the tax savings are substantial. If your spouse is unable to completely offset his or her age amount, pension income and disability amount against tax payable, he or she may transfer the unused portion to your return. Split your CPP and save: You may be able to split part of your CPP retirement
benefits with your spouse depending on how long you lived together when you were contributing to the plan. This is an advantage if one senior is in a higher tax bracket than the other. However, to do so, you must apply to Human Resources & Social Development Canada using Form ISP-1002. It cannot be done at the time of tax preparation.
Double check how foreign pension income is taxed: Pensions from foreign countries may be subject to special tax treatment under the terms of a tax treaty. Always check with a tax professional to find out if the pension you receive from a foreign source is taxable in Canada.
Medical expenses can add up: A portion of most medical expenses can be claimed! Everything from medication to nursing home fees, and even medical insurance for a trip or wintering in another country is considered eligible. Medical expenses are calculated based on income so it is normally more beneficial for the lower income spouse to claim them. And if you had to travel to obtain medical treatment that was not available where you live, you may be able to claim the cost of transportation, meals and accommodation. Taking care of a senior has its tax benefits: If you are over 65 and dependent on
your children or other family members because of an impairment in physical or medical functions, they may be able to claim the Canada Caregiver Tax Credit. To qualify for the tax credit, your earnings need to be less than $23,046 in 2017 and a doctor needs to supply a note explaining the nature and duration of the impairment. If you are eligible for the disability tax credit, they may also be able to claim any portion that you do not need to reduce your taxes to zero.

What Tax Changes Mean For Your Wallet
Over the last few months, the Federal government announced changes to the tax system that have significant impact on what you can on your tax return. Whether you’re a parent, student, or small business owner, staying in the know is the best way to avoid surprises and keep more money in your pocket.
THE GOOD NEWS:
1.5% increase to the Canada Child Benefit. For 2018, the Canada Child Benefit will increase 1.5% for July 2018 – June 2019 benefits. This means more than $80 annually per child with those who qualify for Canada Child Benefits, and $41 more annually for those who qualify for the Child Disability Benefit. These changes had been scheduled for 2020, but were moved ahead two years. And don’t forget – the Canada Child Care Benefits are not included in income on your tax return.
More people now qualify for the Canadian Forces and Police personnel deduction. The Canadian Forces and Police personnel deduction applies now to all members on an overseas mission, regardless of the assessed risk factor. Before, only those classified as being on a high-risk mission were eligible. The legislation is retroactive to January 1, 2017 and if you qualify, any income earned during an international operation will be tax exempt.
Drop in Federal tax rates for Small Business. Canadian entrepreneurs spoke out about the proposed Federal tax changes and the impacts on small business. It seems they’ve been heard. The first change to the plan will start on January 1, 2018 when the small business corporate tax rate will be reduced 0.5% from 10.5% to 10%. The government also promises a further reduction to 9% by January 1, 2019.
THE NOT-SO-GOOD NEWS:
Federal children’s fitness tax credit and arts amount is no more. For 2017, the children’s fitness tax credit and arts amount are now fully eliminated. The impact of this change amounts to $75 worth of tax savings for anyone who maxed out the fitness credit, and $37.50 tax savings for those who maxed out the art amounts, per child. Although the Federal children’s fitness tax credit and arts amounts are gone, British Columbia, Manitoba, the Yukon and Quebec offer credits for children’s activities in fitness and art.
Public Transit amount takes a back seat.

The public transit amount was removed and riders can only claim public transit passes purchased in the first six months of 2017. This change will affect you differently, depending on how much you spend on transit passes and which city you live. For example, in Toronto, a monthly pass costs $146.25 per month. In this case, the reduced tax savings for six fewer passes would be $131.63, calculated as $877.50 x 15% tax credit.
Students, take note. For 2017, full- and part-time students will no longer be able to claim their education/textbook amounts, federally. A typical full-time student who claimed these amounts for 9 months would have reduced their personal claim amount by $4,185 for 2017. Some provinces are also following suit, including Ontario, Saskatchewan, and New Brunswick, which are also eliminating the credit for tuition fees. Fortunately, the federal credit for tuition fees continues and you’ll still be able to carry forward unused education/textbook amounts from previous years.
Incorporated? Hold the sprinkles. Until recently, income sharing or “sprinkling” allowed owners to split income earnings between adult family members, even if they didn’t work for the corporation. This allowed the family to take advantage of allocating income to lower earners and reduce the family’s overall tax bill. Under the new rules, family members will need to prove that they made a reasonable contribution to the business before they’re able to claim any income. These contributions include labour, investment or other financing to the business, or financial risks such as a co-signing a loan. With all the recent discussion in the media, please note that these changes do not apply to your 2017 tax year.
Pending changes to passive income. Since corporations are taxed less than an individual tax payer, they have more after-tax income with which to make investments.. The government feels this gives corporations an unfair advantage and proposes to level the playing field by increasing the tax rate on investment income earned by corporations. These changes are still pending, but will apply only to corporations with more than $50,000 of investment). Similar to the income sharing changes these changes will not take effect for the 2017 tax year.
I wish to thank all our customers for their patronage this past tax season, and look forward to seeing you all again next year For more info, visit an H&R Block location near you. HRBLOCK.CA | 1–800–HRBLOCK (472–5625)

Alta Ball
Alta Ball, resident of Grande Prairie, formerly of Fort McMurray and Grande Cache, passed away on Sunday, April 15, 2018, at QEII Hospital in Grande Prairie, at the age of 62 years. Alta was born in the Assiniboia Hospital on September 2, 1955 to Ralph and Nora Spaerman. She lived her first few years of life in Mazenod, SK. The family moved to Wood Mountain, SK, where she lived till she graduated high school in 1973. She then moved to Edmonton to pursue a Bachelor of Science in Zoology at the University of Alberta. While in Edmonton, she met and married Dan Ball. Alta had many careers though the years. They included Restaurant Front End Manager, Veterinary Assistant at Edmonton Race Track, Bank Teller, Lab Tech, Environmental Health and Safety, and lastly a Power Engineer which she completed in June 2016, at the age of 61 years. Her most important job, however, was being a mother, wife, grandmother, and her life-long journey to discover and grown in relationship with her Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. Alta had a love of knowledge, and the digging to acquire the knowledge. She was athletic and could run, boy could she run! She was also strong-willed, and always fought for her beliefs and what she felt was right. She loved spending time outside: sitting on her bench on the front lawn, running, or tending to her garden. She was also an avid antiquer and real-estate shopper. She window-shopped often or would just sit with a cup of coffee while she watched passers-by in malls, parks, etc. Alta will be sadly missed by her husband Dan Ball; son Josiah Ball; daughter Jordana Ball; daughter in-law Kirsten; grandchildren Tauren and Lincoln Ball; mother Nora; sisters Donna and Twila; brothers Albert and John; sisters in-law Alice and Lorna; brothers in-law Less and Jim; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and countless friends across Saskatchewan, Alberta, and BC. She was predeceased by her father Ralph, brother Hebert, father in-law Ron, mother in-law Nina, sister in-law Margret, and granddaughter Willow. A Funeral Service was held on Monday, April 23, 2018, at 10:00am, at Evergreen Memorial Gardens in Edmonton, AB. Memorial donations may be made to Sorrentino’s Compassion House (10909 76 Ave., Edmonton, AB, T6G 0J6 www.compassionhouse.org ). Condolences may be sent by visiting www.oliversfuneralhome.com

Glentworth School holds ‘Pink Day’
By S.Falconer, Southline Glentworth students ended off the school week before Easter break with their own ‘Pink Day’. Along with pink shirts, milkshakes, cupcakes, gum, eggs and balloons, K to 12 spent the afternoon building school spirit, working together and enjoying each other’s company. Their graffiti art displayed around the school, each student also wrote down their personal commitment towards helping to make someone else’s day a little brighter. The School Community Council drew the names of two students who had completed their letter writing initiative. Congratulations to Rhys on winning the boogey board and to Mary-Jane on winning the food sale coupon. Mr. Ryan Gallinger decided to resign his teaching position in Prairie South School Division. Thanks to Mrs. Ruby Sayers who has been subbing in Glentworth. Mrs. Callie Hertz will start on Monday and finish off the school year. Welcome back. Glentworth School hosted the OSAC’s Performing Arts in Schools Program presenting ‘Hip Hop Hoop Dance’ on April 17. World Champion Hoop Dancer, Terrance Littletent, a member of the Kawacatoose Cree First Nation, collaborated with interdisciplinary artist, Chancz Perry and drummer Jayson Littletent, to produce a cross-cultural fusion of First Nation hoop dance and North American hip hop. The engaging performers shared a historical, educational and inspirational outlook of the two dance genres. Joined by students from Mankota School, it was a wonderful afternoon of culture and learning enjoyed by all. Community Events Mankota Branch of Chinook Regional Library organized an afternoon event with Thelma Poirier telling stories about Grasslands National Park. Introduced to the audience by Loretta Smith of Swift Current, Thelma described the circumstances behind her book, ‘The Grasslanders’ and recounted many interesting tales of the ranchers in the area. Books were available for purchase and refreshments served following the presentation. Fir Mountain Hall held their annual ‘Pig on a Pole’ on March 7. The pork supper was excellent and they had a fair crowd.

Gearing up for spring
Radio personalities sell Spring Fever tickets
Two well-known radio personalities - Jamie Lewis (on the left) from CKRM Regina, and Jason Lee (on the right) from CJWW Saskatoon - blew into town on April 19 and 20 to help local volunteers and fundraisers sell Spring Fever Lotto tickets.
Spring Fever Lotto announces early bird winners By Wes Bloom If you know Jerry Peterson from Bengough, shake his hand and slap him on the back! He’s this year’s winner of the 21st Annual Spring Fever Lotto Early Bird Draw made in Assiniboia last Saturday. Peterson won either $5000 cash OR a seven day Alaskan Cruise for two. But he hasn’t yet made up his mind. The Grand Prize Draw for $150,000 in cash or one of many other grand prizes will be made on Sunday, May 27, 2018. Money raised from this year’s lotto will go towards building the new $10 million sport’s complex and arena, planned to be built across from the Prince of Wales in Assiniboia, where the old Legion Hall stood proudly for many years. “Come hell or high water, we’re turn-
ing the sod on our new sports complex in 2019. Hopefully in the Spring!” Curtis Nelson of the Spring Fever Lotto fundraising committee said. “We’ve already raised $3.7 million cash and have pledges for nearly $1 million more. A total of $4.7 million should allow us to turn the sod on the new building by then.” Over the past twenty years, this highly respected and long standing lotto, along with its many faithful volunteers, also raised the necessary $6.5 million needed to build the Prince of Wales Cultural and Recreation Centre in Assiniboia, a place very much the ’heart and centre’ of this small Saskatchewan town, and the envy of many, much larger, prairie communities.

Submitted by Pat Hanbidge,a horticulturist with the Saskatoon School of Horticulture It seems that this spring will never arrive! Last year at this time in the Saskatoon area for example, we had already had our annual crocus foray to truly welcome spring. But this year, as the sun warms our faces, we are still carefully walking over areas that are slippery and treacherous. Let us only hope that a later spring will also mean a long, warm summer and a very late fall for us all! In early spring, it is a good time to begin to ease into the gardening chores. Try not to overdo it all at once as gardening muscles have been resting for the long, cold winter. If you have not kept up your personal physical fitness since fall, then do yourself a favour and work into gardening slowly. Make use of those lovely mornings and evenings by going for a brisk walk (where the ice has melted) and follow up with some simple stretching exercises using of course those same muscle groups you will use all summer long in the garden. As the snow recedes and the soil dries, it is a great time to clean up the borders. Take away any dead plant parts, dig out any offending dandelions that seem to be already so green but take some time to ponder what is coming up. I find that each spring I get a few surprises. Things seem to be sprouting in places where you can’t quite remember planting something! I guess that is what we call a “spring bonus”! It is also a good time to tidy up the garden shed or garage. The temperatures are warm enough that it is not an ordeal to be outside for longer periods of time. Take a look at your tools, clean them up, sharpen them and get rid of what you do not use. The expression ‘spring cleanup’ is generally meant for your garden – but for me – it is for every part of my property! It is always such a great feeling to dispose of clutter! If you still have not done your spring pruning – you still have a little bit of time. Try not to miss this chore as to prune later in the year is not ideal for most of our woodies. The rapid growth of spring will ensure that any wounds caused by pruning will heal over quickly thus reducing any chance of disease transfer. Remember that it is not a good idea to catch up on pruning but instead to do a little bit each year. Do not remove more than one third of the canopy in any given year. If you have any trees or shrubs that need moving, then as long as the soil is fully thawed, but not too wet then this is a good time to do this rather big chore. The buds have not yet burst so moving anything at this time will be the least risky time of all. Better yet, anything you move will have the entire growing season to get re-established. Rake your lawn areas if they are dry enough. It is amazing how this small chore really spruces up the landscape. It seems that the grass areas turn green overnight once they have some of that thatch removed. It is a bit early to start using conventional inorganic fertilizers, as that will encourage fast green growth that is susceptible to late spring frosts. Pay close attention to any seedlings you have growing inside. If you have started your seeds without additional lights and have them sitting on a windowsill, you will likely have noticed them reaching for that sun. Try to give them all the light possible as if you find them reaching for light the seedlings will be less strong and more susceptible to stresses like disease.

Spring is a “Fresh Start” for Communities in Bloom By Wes Bloom At long last, spring has finally arrived and not a moment too soon. Spring is magic here on the prairies. Very soon, the grass will be green, buds on shrubs and trees will become leaves, and flowers will be all in full bloom. Thanks to a non-profit organization called Communities in Bloom, Assiniboia will also once again bask in the beauty of the organization’s floral designs. Each year, more than 20 dedicated volunteers will work selflessly to help make and keep our community colourful and beautiful. There are not enough ways to say thank you! Marita Williams and her daughter Diane, who owns ‘Fresh Start’, a restaurant/cafe in the Shurniak Art Gallery, have found a unique and delightful way to say “thank you” to Communities in Bloom. On April 10, these two ladies presented a cashier’s cheque to the organization for $1,138. Joanne Girardin, spokesperson and volunteer with Communities in Bloom, gratefully accepted the cheque. This donation will help a worthwhile organization in need of funding. Said Williams in an interview, “We were looking for a very practical and sensible way to say thanks to a wonderful organization for a job well done, and the beauty it graciously shares with this whole community.” The donation was part of funds raised at an Easter bake sale held to raise money for Communities in Bloom. Williams added, “The Easter bake sale will now be an annual event here at ‘Fresh Start’. It’s just one tiny way we can say thanks and show our appreciation.”

Awareness campaign launched for organ and tissue donation The Ministry of Health and the Saskatchewan Health Authority are launching a campaign to raise awareness about the importance of organ and tissue donation. Three donor physicians have signed contracts to share a half-time position, which is responsible for providing leadership and education as part of a new model for Saskatchewan’s organ and tissue donation system. “Our government is committed to improving Saskatchewan’s organ and tissue donation rates,” said Jim Reiter, Health Minister. “In addition to signing three donor physicians, we are launching an advertising campaign to remind Saskatchewan residents that agreeing to be an organ donor saves lives.” In 2018-19, $566,000 has been allocated for the Saskatchewan Health Authority to establish a leadership model for organ and tissue donation, including donor physicians and Registered Nurse donor coordinators. The awareness campaign launch coincides with National Organ and Tissue Donation Awareness Week, and includes video and print media with powerful, real-life examples of organ donation and the impact it has on the lives of Saskatchewan people. “Donor physicians will champion organ donation across the province,” said
Scott Livingstone, Saskatchewan Health Authority CEO. “Their leadership coupled with initiatives aimed at improving the donation process itself, will pave the way to improving organ donation rates in Saskatchewan.” Speaking with loved ones about your intention to donate is important, because organ and tissue donation is only possible with the consent of next of kin. Visit www. saskatchewan.ca to learn more about organ and tissue donation in Saskatchewan, and view the powerful, real-life experiences of three Saskatchewan families. Quick Facts • Saskatchewan’s rate of organ and tissue donation from deceased donors is 14.6 donors per million population in 2017 (up from 12.2 per million in 2016). • Canada’s organ and tissue donation rate was 20.9 deceased donors per million population in 2016 (most recent). • In 2018-19, $566,000 was allocated for the Saskatchewan Health Authority to establish a leadership model for organ and tissue donation, including donor physicians and Registered Nurse donor coordinators. #BeADonorSask: A four-week awareness campaign encourages Saskatchewan residents to consider organ and tissue donation, and talk about their wishes.

Starting mid-May, our Sales Flyers will begin on Thursdays instead of Fridays. For the Food Stores with late night Wednesday shopping hours, this didn’t allow our staff enough time to put up new sales signage on the shelves and throughout the store. Since we knew we’d need to make some store hour changes, we thought we’d revamp all the store hours to better serve our communities. We will now be open until 7:00 pm on every Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. We will also be trying Sunday openings at the Coronach, Gravelbourg and Lafleche branches to see if there is a need. If sales levels reflect positively, we will continue with this year-round.

Community rallies to fight huge prairie fire Strong winds helped to fuel a monster prairie fire near Glenworth on September 4. But thanks to an immense community volunteer effort, the fierce fire was contained. At least three ranches were affected. Six Mile Ranch was the hardest hit losing 3,200 acres of its best fall grazing grass. The fire was reportedly started in the daytime by a spark from a swather in a neighbouring field that was rapidly spread through some of the field by the strong wind and into grass pastureland. Very quickly the fire grew out of control on the tinder dry prairie grass. It developed into a fire that was almost eight miles wide. It was difficult not to notice the huge wall of dark flames being whipped up by the high winds that day. The community rallied to help fight the fire. Word spread rapidly by phone and Facebook. Volunteer fire departments from Mankota, Glenworth and Kildeer arrived with grass fire-fighting equipment. Over 300 ranchers in the area flocked to the scene to help bringing their own water tanks. “Watching rural families come together is truly amazing,” said Corinne Gibson, whose ranch was most affected. Some of the volunteers controlled the advance of flames. It was difficult to see the fire line because of the intense smoke. Graders plowed furrows to stop the spread of the fire. Others patrolled the perimeters to keep the fire contained. Still others in the local community pitched in in the background by bringing food, coffee and

Volunteers continued fighting the fire until about 10 p.m. when it was brought under control. The few remaining hotspots were monitored overnight and into the next day. Miraculously, there were no animals injured on the cattle pasture that burned and no human injuries. The Gibsons were able to move most of their 300 cattle out of the pasture area when the fire started. However, the frightened cattle scattered and the

family spent days searching for them and rounding them up. The Gibsons are now assessing the damage having lost their best grass to the fire. They face an immediate problem of where to locate these cattle this fall and how to feed them over winter. The RMs in the south area are some of the driest in the province with practically no rain since April. The RMs issued fire bans back in July following extreme drought conditions this summer. This fire demonstrated how fast a fire can get out of control in dry conditions.
