McCord UCW learn about Korea in presentation By S.Falconer, Southline Rev. Catherine Christie of Abbey was introduced by Hazel Blake at the McCord United Church on September 11. At the afternoon event, Christie, dressed in traditional Korean attire, presented an account of her time in South Korea complete with pictures. On behalf of the Mission and Service, Christie worked for the past seven years as a mission co-worker with Korean partners including the Presbyterian Church. She gave a brief summary of the history of both North and South Korea. Her duties were to teach the English language and to translate papers to English. Over the years, the church workers attempted to work for democracy, to teach the people their rights, to write to the government about injustices, to protest the poor wages of factory workers and to support families whose wage earners were imprisoned. There were also regular prayer services for peace and reconciliation. In 2016, the National Council of Churches organized a Peace Treaty Campaign to the United States. Participants traveled from Los Angeles to Washington, DC, to raise awareness. Women activists have even received permission to cross the Demilitarized Zone between North and South Korea to promote peace and to encourage unity. The 2018 Olympics provided a boost to re-unification with the joint flag and joint teams. Following the presentation, Christie answered questions from the audience. She felt her most significant contribution was being part of the weekly prayer services. The ‘Minutes for Mission’ booklet includes stories from Korea as well as other areas. The group, which included ladies from the New Venture Pastoral Charge, moved to the basement for refreshments and a time of fellowship. Christie also shared a ‘memory book’ with those present.
