Assiniboia Child Care Services hosts steak fundraiser By Dan Archer Assiniboia Child Care Services held a fundraiser at 121 Steakhouse on February 7. The fundraiser was successful with 130 tickets sold. Kelly Yasuda won the 50/50, taking home $225. Michelle Vallieres, Director of the Assiniboia Child Care Services, along with the rest of the staff, noted that there were a lot of parents, grandparents, coworkers, friends and community members who got involved in making the fundraiser a success. The Assiniboia Child
Care Services is a nonprofit, charitable child care service run by parents for parents requiring daycare needs. The non-profit provides care for the entire family. “We are fundraising to help meet many program needs. This is our first steak event. We host annual Art Sale in the fall and a Riding Toy Raffle in the spring,” Vallieres said. Most of the participants really enjoyed their night out in support of the Assiniboia Child Care Services. “It’s called a fundraiser, because it’s fun at 121,” Camibry (age 4).

Archivist publishes a book on province’s photographic history By Dan Archer “An Honest, Genial and Kindly People” is a published collection of photographs featuring the First Nations of southern Saskatchewan as archived by Adrian K. Paton. The book title is taken from a quote by Cecil Le Mesurier, a British settler from The Channel Islands. One of the remittance men connected with Cannington Manor, Mesurier and other European settlers were intrigued with the
roaming lifestyles of the First Nations of the southern grasslands after arriving in Canada. The 188-page book published by McNally Robinson documents the lives of the First Nations people in Saskatchewan from the early 1900s and upwards. These photographs were amassed and archived by Paton, who created the South Saskatchewan Photo Museum in Arcola in 1993. Originally from Gravelbourg, Paton moved to Arc-
ola when he was 22. Paton started gathering the historic photos in the late 1980s and they cover a large span of Canadian history from the 1870’s to the 1950s, with the majority from the early 1900s. Paton has taken care to meticulously preserve his collection. “I have a whole bunch of pictures hanging in file folders in binders with labels.” The author is particularly interested in the First Nations of the Treaty 2 and Treaty 4 areas and how

their lives were modified by the effects of colonialism. Previous to European settlement, many nations lived and journeyed through the southern Saskatchewan prairies in search of buffalo, including the Cree, the Sioux and Ojibwa nations. The First Nations viewed land much differently than European settlers. The First Nations saw themselves as stewards of the earth. From their perspectives, everyone lived on land given to them to use and share by the Creator. Paton’s book documents the adjustments to European colonialization after the buffalo vanished and when foreign notions
such as the concept of private land were introduced. Paton’s print collection contains photos from all over Western Canada and even parts of the United States. Today, Paton is reported to have more than 8,000 photographs. He accumulated this massive compilation of photographic history from drives throughout the province, as well as from conducting research and sending out letters. At this time, Paton is centring his archival work in the far south of the province. “I’ve been working south of Assiniboia in the Big Muddy area.” Paton’s book is steadily gaining interest for those
wanting to examine a volume of historic Canadian photos. In fact, his book has been on the McNally Robinson Book- sellers’ best seller’s list for two weeks, according to Paton’s daughter, Val- erie Guillemin. Many First Nations members are also taking notice of Paton’s ground-breaking effort. “A chief from a local reserve took a case of books and distributed 30 books to the elders,” Paton said. Paton’s book is available for retail at the Gravelbourg Tribune on Main Street, as well as at the Arcola Town office for $35. The book can also be purchased online on the McNally Robinson website.
