Farming practices have influenced drought conditions By Dan Archer Although nature has a front and centre role in dictating weather patterns, farming practices in agriculture could have influenced drought conditions for centuries. For example, degrading the flow of river waters downstream for irrigation affects the flow of water. Moreover, deforestation and the removal of native grasses and shrubs all reduce the
amount of moisture accumulated in the soil, causing surface run-off as the rain flows over the land without soaking into the earth. Overgrazing might be another contributing factor leading to drought conditions. Unsustainable land practices are said to have placed enormous pressures on agricultural lands by altering the soil chemistry and hydrology in the earlier civilizations in parts of the

civilizations remarked how the salt table of the subsoil in southern Mesopotamia became devastated from overirrigation and poor drainage years after the Sumerians in 1595 B.C. Saskatchewan writer and historian, Barry Potyondi, in Farm Settlers on the Periphery in the historical review Wood Mountain Uplands, discussed how settlers in the south country were given an additional 160 acres of land beginning in 1908. After this offer, the prairies of south central Saskatchewan were populated with farmers. Potyondi recorded a sudden upsurge in population despite explorer John Palliser’s earlier views of the land being inhabitable and unproductive. Saskatchewan’s population soared from 46,560 people in 1906 to 178,200 in 1916. A rapid need for farmers grew especially during
the World War One years in Canada. Amanda Stephenson in the Calgary Herald wrote how agricultural production in Western Canada developed in strength from 1914-1918 along with a high global demand for food. Moreover, the farmers were given substantial prices for their harvests. More land was cleared and ploughed than ever before in the early 1900s. Harvests brought a sense of optimism to Saskatchewan’s south country; despite being known as an area with arid conditions year-around. Even before the Depression years of the 1930s, arid conditions came and went through the south country. Starting in 1919, strong winds ripped through south central farms and lifted off the topsoil – these windy circumstances persisted, ruining harvests
until 1922. Potyondi wrote “Without roots and moisture, the pulverised soil literally blew away as the hot winds came.” According to Green Facts, a non-profit program founded in 2001, there are methods that might be addressed to solve desertification and droughts, excepting Mother Nature’s noncompliance. The incorporation of land and water management protects soil from erosion. Using vegetative coverage such as tree windbreaks shields soil against destabilization brought from either incessant winds or rain. Mixing the use of land for grazing and farming permits a more capable rotation of nutrients within the soil. Green Facts also recommended the use of dryland aquaculture and greenhouse agriculture for increased production above soil.

world such as Mesopotamia, known as the Cradle of Civilization. Intensified agriculture had imposed extraordinary stresses on the agricultural lands of Mesopotamia, starting in Sumer, one of the earliest civilizations in Western Asia and geographically located in modern Iraq, Syria and Kuwait. Once a forested zone and now mostly desert, Mesopotamia lay between the Tigris-Euphrates river system. When Mesopotamia’s civilization grew, the area became more reliant on irrigation for agriculture. Historian Thorkild Jacobsen noted the fields in the Sumer civilization of Mesopotamia were spoilt by 2028 BC. A shortage of grain ensued, causing the prices to rise by 60 times in comparison to the norm. A.K Grayson in his study on a latter period of Babylonian
