Our Town Kinettes were an integral part of Telemiracle Several of the Assiniboia Kinettes played an integral part during Telemiracle 46, which was held in Regina on March 5 and 6. It was a record-breaking year for Telemiracle 46, the total was almost a million more than the previous record of 2017. Several of the Kinettes were in attendance volunteering during Telemiracle 46. A local non-kin volunteer, Fiona Graham, owner/ operator of Fiona Graham Photography, took the final image of the show that was circulated as part of the media release to news outlets across the province. Lisa Martin, the club’s Vice President, served as Social Media Coordinator for the event, along with her team of 12 handled all the social media accounts, photography and online graphics in the week leading up to and during the show. Cecette Brons Rhodes and Talsa Warken were part of Martin’s social media team. Raelynn Nicholson, Tara Pedersen, Lorraine Duxbury, Jesse Shkuratoff and Lisa O’Reilly also attended the event, working in other positions such as security, food services, messenger and Teddy handler.

This TeleMiracle was also special since some “Kin Kids” were able to attend the event with their moms. Kaelyn Pedersen, Lara Shkuratoff and Mina Wirges each attended their first TeleMiracle, volunteering in the messenger, food services and social media areas of the show. Raelynn Nicholson is currently serving as a Zone Rep on the Kinsmen TeleMiracle Foundation Board. This board responsible for processing the applications

for those requesting TeleMiracle funding. Nicholson works directly with families and individuals who are in need of financial assistance from TeleMiracle and presents their application details to the Foundation Board during their monthly meetings. The Kin Canada National President, Jennifer Burry, and National VicePresident, Cameron Kemp were also in attendance at TeleMiracle 46. Telemiracle provided National

Board of Directors member Lorraine Duxbury with the opportunity to finally meet both Burry and Kemp, with whom she had only been able to meet via online video meetings. The Assiniboia Kinettes were thrilled to share a special meal with them before the show. The Kinettes donated a total of $20.061.33 to Telemiracle 46, from community donations. One of their larger fundraisers, a Spin-a-Thon held at Stride Studio,

raised more than $11,000. The Kinettes collected $214.40 in donations from the residents at Eastside Court. There was $918 collected from the Assiniboia 7th Avnue School, through the Helping Hands fundraiser, a PJ day and a raffle. The Mossbank School donated $1,235.93 from the Helping Hands fundraiser, and yogurt sales. Assiniboia Elementary doanted $3,781.50 from a Toonie Tuesday (where students could wear hats

in the class), an art auction, a candy jar guess, student challenge donations and staff donations. As their own group, the Assiniboia Kinettes held a Christmas Lane raffle and a TM collection box, to raise $2,158.50. Local performer Jordan Engstrom also performed during the show. She presented the Assiniboia Kinsmen’s donation which was matched by Nutrien since she was a SaskTalent performer at Telemiracle.

Wendy Gibson DLM St. Paul’s UnitedChurch Crying for the World In this Lenten season, the world is an uncertain place. In the gospel reading for the second Sunday in Lent, Luke 13:31-35, Jesus is crying over Jerusalem as a hen over her chicks. Many of us are crying over the things that are happening around us – for some it is the immediate problems of everyday life such as rising prices for gas and groceries, the shortage and expensive cost of housing, or the icy roads and winter weather of the past few weeks. For others, there are global concerns – natural disasters such as the flooding in Australia; famine in parts of Africa; and especially the war in Ukraine and the increasing numbers of refugees fleeing the destruction in their homeland. It has become more and more evident that we cannot ignore events being reported in the news even though they occur half a world away. There is the proof that we are all interconnected, all part of God’s creation. 1 Corinthians 12:26-27 tells us “If one member suffers, all suffer together with it; if

one member is honored, all rejoice together with it. Now you are the body of Christ and individually members of it.” How much would Jesus be crying over the destruction and unrest in our world today? How many tears would he cry over our actions or inactions in the face of these challenges? It is easy to sit back and ask, “What can I do about all of this?” It is too easy to rest in the comfort of the familiar – the people we know who share our culture, our language and customs. As Christians we are called to follow Jesus – a man who didn’t sit back; who paid no attention to “the way things have always been done”; a man of action who healed the sick, cleared the vendors from the temple, who welcomed children, women and foreigners to his side. In these troubled times sitting back is no longer an option – it is up to us to find ways to help those in need - wherever they may be, in whatever way we can. We cannot afford to sit in our worldly comfort at the cost of a more just and fairer world, a world of peace, for all. It it not enough to cry, Christ calls us to action.

BEING ORGANIZED HELPS IN REACHING MY POTENTIAL Sabrina Kraft skraft@weyburnreview.com

I am one of those people who likes to be organized, and often arrives early when it comes to attending appointments. This habit comes from my parents, who taught me that it was always better to show up early, and that showing up ‘on time’ was being late. There are a lot of benefits to being an organized person, as it helps me plan out my week, or even plan for special trips that might be months away. For me, part of being organized includes having a monthly budget, making meal plans to increase my grocery shopping potential, and appointment reminders to myself on my calendar or my phone. One of the greatest assets to my organization is a little appointment book that sits on my work desk, and allows me to not only plan out the week ahead, but also make notes on what I have accomplished every day. This appointment book idea was first implemented by my mother, who uses her book to record everything from the weather, rain received, and even to how many birds have visited her feeder. I use my appointment book mostly for work, as there are many different deadlines and upcoming features for the newspaper that I want to keep in mind. As the appointment book covers the entire year, I can even make notes for future events. When I make plans to take a vacation, I find that

being organized and having a schedule helps me to plan ahead, so that I can ensure that some of my work responsibilities are already completed and just enjoy my vacation time to the fullest. My habits of being organized have already started to be picked up by my son, who has his own calendar, and makes his own plans ahead of time. Christopher has a few after-school household chores, which include feeding grandpa’s fish and our cats. He recently started driving training, which occurs right after school and has made arrangements with his grandfather to ensure that the fish are still fed on time. It has become that those aspects of our personalities are so ingrained into our lives. I actually feel a little anxiety or stress when I try to procrastinate, just because waiting until the last minute seems so foreign to my very nature. I know some people who thrive in those situations, and it just does not make sense to me. In those times, it is important to remind myself that what works for me, might not necessarily work for other people. It is important to find that compromise when you are working as a team, because not every person will have the same methods to get their work done. It is more important to me to find a balance and have everyone working at their own potential, whatever that means for them. As for me, I will continue to plan ahead, make a schedule for myself, and be dedicated to being organized. After all, that in itself helps me reach my potential.

On Monday, February 21, 2022, Mel left us to find greener pastures. Born on the Wondersprings family farm at Vantage, SK on January 16, 1930, he and his brother Stewart worked tirelessly in the fields and with the livestock, always striving to grow the best crop with the best machinery, create the best herd, breed and ride the best Quarter Horses. He was renowned for his great work ethic, his honesty, his generosity, and his familial ways with all animals. In 1967 he was proud to be the recipient of the SQHA 10-year grand champion award for total point showing and horsemanship of his horse Lexa Linda. In 1967 he met a young widow, Edith, at the John Deere dealership, and they married the following year. He learned a hard lesson - that it was easier to ride bucking horses than it was to raise Carla and Lars! As Lars became more involved in farming, Mel diversified to become a part-owner of Versatile/Deutz-Allis Implements for a few years. He was the proud recipient of the Century Farm designation in 2012. Special times were trips to friends’ ranches, livestock sales, family reunions with his American cousins, and scouting out Arizona. He continued to farm and ranch until 2021 when our old cowboy was feeling worn out, so he reluctantly found good homes for his treasured pets and moved into the town of Assiniboia. Predeceased by his father Albert, mother Mabel, sister Joyce, brother Stew and step-grandson Jeremy Rousseau. Mel is survived by his wife Edith (Coldwell, Tjeltveit), daughter Carla (Louis) Lafrance and their sons Matthew and Luc, son Lars (Dionne) Tjeltveit and their children Joshua Rousseau, Kristie (Derek) Howe and their children Tylar, Hayden, Allix and Dylan Howe, Scott (Sara) Sawin and their children Peyton, Hannah and William Sawin, Andrew (Jazmin) Tjeltveit and their children Rowyn and Bo Tjeltveit, Cassie (Leon) McCann and their daughter Addison McCann, beloved sister Illa Mitchell, nephew Ross (Charlene) Buchanan and family, and niece Nancy Buchanan. Mel’s wishes were that a friends’ and families’ scattering of ashes on his Wonderspring Farm take place after the calves have come and the seeds are planted. In all of his experiences, his newfound friendships developed into lifelong bonds and treasured memories. For this, his family thanks all of you. Online condolences can be shared at www.pichehawkinsgrondinfuneralchapels.ca

Assiniboia Times, Assiniboia Saskatchewan -- March 18, 2022 13

RCMP: Vehicle thefts increase, 29% of reports had keys left inside vehicle A total of 1,519 vehicle theft files were created by Saskatchewan RCMP (in Saskatchewan RCMP jurisdiction) January 1 December 31, 2021. At least 451 or about 29 per cent of the vehicle owners reported to police they had left keys inside the vehicle. According to the Saskatchewan RCMP, this is consistently more than 100 vehicle theft reports a month. (Notes: “Vehicle” includes: cars, trucks, SUVs, ATVs, snowmobiles, motorcycles and other vehicles with a motor such as tractors, skid steers, etc. A few of these files had more than one vehicle reported stolen). There were 1,095 reports of vehicle theft resulted in the vehicle being recovered or about 72 per cent of the total. These

vehicles were recovered minutes, hours, days or even months later. It is important to note that smaller vehicles, which could be loaded onto a trailer or into a truck (such as ATVs or motorcycles), had a lower recovery rate than cars, trucks, and SUVs. There were 368 recovered vehicles that had been damaged in some way including being burned, stripped of parts or involved in a collision. Some vehicles may be left running with keys inside as people warm them up and leave them to enter their home or a store for a brief moment, and return to find their vehicle gone. It is important to always take the keys with you when you leave the vehicle. Hiding your keys inside or with the vehicle is as risky as leaving them in

the ignition. With today’s push button start key fobs, the thief doesn’t even have to locate keys to steal your vehicle. Even if a key is needed, there are only so many hiding places in or on a vehicle and the thief is likely to find it. Reminder: the same risks apply to commercial vehicles such as semi trailers, farm tractors and heavy equipment as they do a personal vehicle – keys left inside can lead to theft. “Our Crime Analysts are able to sort through the data we receive when people report crimes such as these vehicle thefts and are able to track criminal activities and trends this way,” says Sgt. Scott Hunter of the Saskatchewan RCMP Crime Prevention and Crime Reduction Unit. “This intelligencebased information tells us

that some stolen vehicles are additionally used in the commission of other crimes including break and enters, dangerous driving and flight from police. So vehicle thefts sometimes end up being more than just vehicle thefts.” Here are a few additional tips for vehicle owners to help prevent theft: Remember to remove all valuable items out of your vehicle whenever possible, including tools, bank cards, and personal identification – all of which can lead to additional criminal activity. Remove garage door openers from vehicles which may allow someone access to your home. Do not leave keys in the vehicle when you run out of fuel on the road. Someone else might come by with a jerry can of fuel and help themselves to your vehicle.

SARM joins tech startup to offer a new initiative to prevent trespassing A new initiative to prevent trespassing: SARM joins Saskatchewan tech startup to help rural landowners manage property and reduce unsolicited visitors and trespassers “The SaskLander platform concept is simple. Post the land you own and then deny or give permission to those who request to enter onto it. The general public can request the required permission from landowners for hunting or recreation. The app works for rural municipalities because it gives the public access to a rural map and identifies the parcels of land and the listed no trespassing locations. It truly is a must-have resource for our 296 RMs,” said Ray Orb, Saskatchewan Association of Rural Municipalities (SARM) President. Amendments to the Trespass Act require the general public, such as hunters and recreational users, to gain permission to enter onto private lands,

whether the land is posted or not. It is currently illegal for a member of the general public to access private land that has been posted with “no trespass” notifications for recreational purposes. The legislation amendments will transfer the onus of responsibility from the landowner to those wishing to access the land by requiring them to ask for permission before entering. SaskLander is an opt-in service that lets landowners add land and set their permissions by activity, in effect posting land digitally. “One of the issues has always been that the general public, when seeking to access private land, wouldn’t always see a no trespassing sign. They might not know who the landowner is or how to contact them. SaskLander platform has bridged that gap, it’s as quick as opening the website and looking at the parcel of land you plan to be on and sending a message to the landowner,”

MARKET REPORT

added Orb. The SaskLander platform has 268 landowners registered online, accounting for 730 parcels. Usage of the platform spiked during hunting season in 2021, with notable and ongoing growth from recreational interest. In December, SaskLander noted increased signups as well, attributed to snowmobile season and the Trespass Act starting enforcement January 1, 2022. SaskLander is in early access and free to try. Trespassing presents a threat not only to feelings of personal safety for rural municipality landowners, but also the livelihood of the landowner. Unfortunately, livestock has been lost to hunting accidents or because gates have been left open as a result of trespassing incidents. Additionally, the potential is high for the spread of noxious weeds, invasive species, and soilborne diseases, like clubroot. This concern alone

AS

SIN

IVESTOCK AU IBOIA L CTI

presents a serious biosecurity threat to Saskatchewan’s agricultural economy. SARM sees the SaskLander app as a solution for landowners and recreational users to obtain permission to enter private lands and help diminish the risk of land trespassing.

PAS applauds designation of Pharmacy Appreciation Month The Pharmacy Association of Saskatchewan is applauding the province for designating March 2022 as Pharmacy Appreciation Month. “Pharmacists have long played a critical role in the health of Saskatchewan residents, but over the past two years, that role has increased substantially,” said Michael Fougere, CEO, Pharmacy Association of

Saskatchewan. Fougere points to the more than 600,000 COVID vaccines administered by pharmacists to date, and the nearly 180,000 Flu shots given to Saskatchewan residents over the past year. During the pandemic, pharmacists have also played a critical role in prescribing for a wide range of ailments including bladder

infections, skin infections, headaches, hemorrhoids, and birth control, among many others. “Pharmacists are absolutely key members of the provincial health care team, “said Fougere. In addition to dispensing medications, they assess medication use, they provide counselling for chronic disease management such as diabetes,

asthma, and hypertension, smoking cessation and addictions management, they administer a range of vaccinations including those for travel, shingles, pneumonia and others, and they prescribe for 23

minor ailments. Fougere is encouraging everyone to pause this month, in appreciation of the role played by pharmacists in supporting the health of Saskatchewan residents. He is also ur-

ging residents to consider nominating a deserving pharmacist for PAS’ People’s Choice Awards. The awards are presented each year to recognized pharmacists at PAS’ annual conference in April.

From Where I Stand: to all the bullies of the world, beware! Submitted by Wes Bloom Like most people in the world, I was totally stunned a couple of weeks ago to hear of the recent Russian invasion of the Ukraine. To be perfectly honest, I never really thought it would happen. Like so many folks, I threw my hands up in the air in absolute shock and utter disbelief. How could this even happen in 2022? Unbelievable. And impossible. Or so I thought. Yet it happened, nonetheless. And there didn’t seem to be much the world could do to stop it, at the time. It made us all realize how helpless and vulnerable we are, and how inadequate we were in the moment. What’s most disturbing to me is that there is yet another World-Bully alive and living on the planet today - Vladimir Putin - the likes of which have not been seen since Saddam Hussein, the Iraqi dictator, who was ultimately captured, convicted of unbelievable war crimes, and finally hung on December

30, 2006. Perhaps, like me, you’re left standing there, scratching your head trying to understand how one single, power hungry bully, could cause so much pain and suffering for so many people in the world today. It’s not possible for him to justify such blatant disrespect and disregard for human life and suffering. As a result of this unprovoked Russian invasion, things have become so unbearable for the Ukrainian people, that nearly three million souls have fled to neighboring towns and countries for refuge. Before February 24, 2022, when Russia invaded, the Ukraine was home to more than 43 million people. Today, terrified men, women, children, and seniors are fleeing for their very lives - many, with nothing more than the clothes on their backs. Imagine, if you will, having to run for your very life. Leaving behind everything that you worked so hard for all of your life. Heading into a dark, uncertain future. With no hope in sight. All because of one sick, de-

mented, and crazy man. How is it possible, that a dictator - a tyrant really, and a monster - could even think that such behavior would be acceptable in the eyes of the world? Thank goodness that the Ukrainian people - at least those who are able - are standing up to the terrorist Putin and are determined, against incredible odds, to never give up. Ukrainian president, Volodymyr Zelenskyi, stands tall and defiant in the face of such a formidible enemy - the Russian ‘Bear’. He, and his courageous countrymen have become heros in the midst of this devastating nightmare they find themselves in. And in so doing, they have become an inspiration to those of us who fear bullies, dictators, confrontation, and war. What they have taught us is, that no matter the cost, it’s best to stand up to the bullies of this world. What Russian president Vladimir Putin failed to understand was the resolve, determination, and incredible strength of the Ukrainian people who are

not about to lie down and die without a fight. What he failed also to recognize was that the world, even in the midst of a paralyzing and crushing pandemic, would rise up to stand beside the Ukrainian people and offer them much needed help and support. I was ‘taken aback’ a short time ago as I viewed a somewhat concerning internet meme. It showed a photo of the elder Clint Eastwood sitting quietly on his front porch in the cool of the evening, drinking a beer. The photo was taken from one of his most recent films called “Gran Torino”, and warned: “Wait until the people who just want to be left alone get involved”. The world is now involved - reluctantly - in this tragic, senseless battle against tyranny. If the Ukrainian struggle and people have taught us anything about this war against their freedom, it would be that it’s time to send a message to the bullies of this world: “We’re done. So be warned. And beware!” That’s how I see it at least. From where I stand.
