Province announces additional funding for recruitment and retention of Early Childhood Educators

The Government of Sas katchewan and the Govern ment of Canada announced an investment of $2.59 mil lion to fund one-time grants in support of the recruitment and retention of certified Early Childhood Educators (ECEs) and group family

child care assistants to regu lated child care centres and group family child care homes in the province.

“The Government of Saskatchewan is com mitted to supporting the recruitment and reten tion of more Early Child

Lafleche meeting raises questions

Residents of Lafleche were made aware recently of a special meeting of Town Council, leaving some curi ous as to the outcome of the items discussed.

“In the interest of trans parency, notice of this meeting was posted on the Town’s Facebook page and on the window of the Municipal Building,” said Lafleche Town Council in an emailed response to The

Times. “No resolutions or bylaws may be passed dur ing a closed meeting and all matters discussed in a closed meeting are to be kept in confidence until dis cussed at a public meeting; therefore, no further com ments will be provided.”

Provincial group family child care homes and child care centres will re ceive more information and application forms for the Early Learning and Childcare Workforce En hancement Grants from the Ministry of Education starting from October 11.

“This announcement is another step in providing resources to the Early Learn ing and Child Care (ELCC) sector as we move forward in building an ELCC system,” Saskatchewan Early Child

hood Association Executive Director Georgia Lavallee said. “This grant can help fortify our sector and sup port Early Childhood Edu cators in our province.”

The Early Learning and Child Care Workforce En hancement Grant is just one part of a larger initiative by the Governments of Sas katchewan and Canada to implement a Canada-wide Early Learning and Child Care System.

Last month, the prov ince announced an invest ment of $5.4 million for increased wages for ECEs and in August 2022, the government announced free post-secondary training for ECEs. These are only some of the steps taken to ensure high-quality early childhood education programs and ser vices are available to all Sas katchewan children.
