Radon is second leading cause of lung cancer

Continued from front page

Fortunately, repairing the issue is not overly cost ly. The first step is to test the level of radon in your home using either a passive single-use test requiring three months of data col lection before being sent to a lab, or by using a continu ous monitor. The benefit of the latter is faster results, they’re reusable and can be used short or long-term.

When a building is deemed to have high lev els of radon, Kirkpatrick explained general remedi ation measures. The basic process involves giving the radon a lower, more desirable point to migrate - often involving the instal lation of a fan - and con trolling how the gas enters the atmosphere outside of the house.

“We’ve been all through this area fixing houses,”

Kirkpatrick said, noting most repairs fall into the $3500 range. Compared to the damaging health ef fects, it seems like a small price to pay.

“Radon is the second leading cause of lung can cer,” he noted. “It is the leading cause of lung can cer in people who’ve never smoked.”

Winter is the sea son with elevated radon readings detected, hence Kirkpatrick’s timely pres entation, spreading the message of prevention.

Amistra Consulting recognized as Canadian champion

Regina-based Amistra Consulting Ltd. (“Amis tra”) was awarded the 2022 Constantinus Inter national Gold Medal. This prize, which rec ognizes excellence in management consulting services, is awarded an nually by CMC-Global.

Amistra was also named the 2022 Constantinus International Award Can adian Champion.

Amistra is being rec ognized for delivering the South Saskatchewan Ready Sector-Level Feas ibility Study: Offsetting Clean Energy Transition

Impacts on a Coal-Reliant Rural Economy.

The study has had an immediate impact in help ing the south Saskatch ewan region plan its future without a coal-fired grid energy plant that currently accounts for over 87 per cent of the region’s GDP.

Kyron Manske, vicechair of the South Sas katchewan Ready board said the study “has helped create a guide for us to work with as we try to navigate through this transition.”

Sean Wallace, Man aging Director for South Saskatchewan Ready, said that the forward-thinking recommendations in the study has enabled the partnership to “embark on

a journey of growth.” Five projects totalling over $500,000 have already been awarded based on this study.

Amistra formed a multi-disciplined expert team to develop a vision for economic survival. The resulting sector feasibility study identifies over 40 vi able opportunities in the four economic mainstays of the region: Agri-Value, Mining, Green Energy and

Tourism.

Al Thibeault, President of Amistra, puts the work in perspective. “An im portant aspect of man agement consulting is taking on big challenges to benefit real people. Here we’ve tackled two big challenges – clean energy transition and eco nomic renewal – to help over 2,500 people in our home province. It doesn’t get better than that.”
