2 2014 NSW TRAINING AWARDS
MESSAGE FROM THE HON ADRIAN PICCOLI MP, MINISTER FOR EDUCATION Welcome to the 2014 New South Wales State Training Awards presentation evening. Tonight we will celebrate the success of the State’s outstanding students, teachers, training organisations and employers. The Awards recognise the “best of the best”, and many of our finalists will progress to representing New South Wales in national and international competitions. Last year’s winners went on to take out six national titles, and have emerged as ambassadors for training excellence on the international stage. There are finalists from right across our great State, and I am particularly pleased to welcome those representing rural and regional areas. Behind the stories of these people you will find a diversity of skills, trades and personalities. You will also read of the common themes of best practice and major achievements. It is not surprising that many of the people here tonight will emerge as the leaders of tomorrow, with a commitment to their trade or industry, as well as community service. As our economy strengthens across the State we must have the knowledge, skills and expertise in place to support this growth. I am confident that the high standard of our vocational education and training system will do exactly that.
Hon Adrian Piccoli MP Minister for Education

Mr Bert Evans AO Patron of the NSW Training Awards and NSW Apprenticeships Ambassador Few Australians have done more for advancing the cause of apprentices and vocational learners than Bert Evans. His advocacy for improving apprenticeships and traineeships is relentless and he has been at the forefront of initiatives to increase participation levels, expand industry support and ensure the quality of vocational education and training in NSW leads the nation. His support for the needs of disadvantaged learners has been impressive. Bert’s mission is based around excellence and fearlessness. He believes that for Australia to survive and prosper in a global economy, every enterprise must adopt an unwavering commitment to worlds best practice and a “fair go for all.” Further, he constantly challenges each one of us to never stop learning, to be active in our communities, and to never settle for “second best”. In May the Minister for Education Adrian Piccoli launched the new $2.4 million Bert Evans Apprentice Scholarship program to assist apprentices who need additional financial support. The scholarships are designed to assist those apprentices who face significant challenges in completing their qualification, particularly those students with a disability, Aboriginal apprentices and women in non-traditional trades. Bert was awarded the prestigious Life Time Achievement Award at the 2013 Australian Training Awards. He was made a Member of the Order of Australia in 1984, and was further honoured in 1996 when he was made an Officer of the Order. Bert was also awarded an honorary Doctorate of Science in Economics from the University of Sydney in 1993. Amber is passionate about children’s services and has completed the Diploma in Children’s Services. She never considered tertiary studies until she approached TAFE and was encouraged to build on her education. From here she went on to commence a Bachelor of Early Childhood. The Diploma in Children’s Services gave Amber an opportunity to start a career, gain professional skills and build on her training for the future. Amber stated that “Not everyone is attracted to university, TAFE provided an opportunity to learn new skills and gain employment through work placements in four different childcare centres. I am passionate about my studies and it has made the world of difference to me. I would like to encourage others to give it a go. It is a wonderfully supportive environment at TAFE”.
When Dianne was ready to re-join the workforce after raising her family, she aimed for a career in science and sought to build on her previous science degree. Dianne turned to TAFE to give her the up-to-date practical skills and knowledge required to conduct a wide range of sampling and testing within a pathology laboratory. As a mature aged student, Dianne found that her vocational studies have been beneficial at many levels. Dianne discovered her studies not only provided her with knowledge and skills, but also the “encouragement to achieve regardless of your circumstances in life, age or previous education”. Dianne has become an inspiration to those in her Salvation Army community as she has shared the story of her journey with a number of women’s groups.

Not satisfied with a Certificate III in Electrotechnology, Jonathon also completed a restricted licence in Air-conditioning Split Systems, Refrigerant Handling and the Electrical Safety Certificate. In the future, Jonathon plans on completing a degree in electrical engineering which would encompass all that he has learned and more. This award recognises an apprentice who has achieved excellence in their studies as well as demonstrated their capabilities in the workplace through the application of their learning. The winner will be a worthy role model for their trade into the future.
Phil Darby Memorial Award - Encouragement Award for an Apprentice or Trainee (Sponsored by The Australian Industry Group)

Trade: Engineering - Mechanical Trade Certificate III Trained by: TAFE NSW - Illawarra Institute Employed by: Hunter Valley Training Company Hosted by: BlueScope Steel Limited
Trade: Automotive Vehicle Body (Vehicle Painting) Certificate III Trained by: TAFE NSW - Western Sydney Institute Employed by: Jonak & Jonak Services Pty Ltd
Stephen completed his mechanical engineering apprenticeship in December 2013 and excelled throughout his training. He chose this career pathway after several years in the building industry. He completed his apprenticeship with the Hunter Valley Training Company and was awarded the John Bybar Apprentice of the Year in 2010, a BlueScope Steel award. In the second year of his apprenticeship Stephen also commenced a Diploma of Mechanical Engineering with the support of BlueScope who awarded him a scholarship. In his final year Stephen was nominated and was a finalist in the Australian Industry Groups Apprentice of the Year award category. He secured a full-time role with Transfield Services, was quickly promoted to Mechanical Technician and is currently undertaking the Advanced Diploma of Engineering.
Phil Darby would have proudly supported Daniel in competing his apprenticeship. As a school-based apprentice, Daniel had a number of employers and endured some periods of unemployment, but despite this, he persevered to complete his apprenticeship . Daniel is philosophical about his experience, believing he has benefitted from working with a number of employers. This experience has given him the understanding of how important it is to look after and mentor apprentices and above all how important it is to listen to the needs of the employer and younger apprentices. He will be a great mentor for young apprentices who find the pathway to completion difficult and his philosophy is “it can be done if you have support and mentoring.

MITCHELL CONLEY
Trade: Stonemasonry Certificate III Trained by: TAFE NSW - South Western Sydney Institute Employed by: Einstein Building Services
Trade: Automotive Mechanical Technology (Heavy Vehicle Mobile Equipment) - Certificate III Trained by: TAFE NSW - Illawarra Institute Employed by: Hunter Valley Training Company Hosted by: Buckleys Plant Maintenance
Four years ago and after a couple of weeks labouring for her father, a certified Stonemason, Amba traded in her job as a Dental Hygienist for a rewarding career in Stonemasonry. She promptly enrolled in a Certificate III in Stonemasonry (Monumental/Installation). Amba found the experience a rewarding challenge - the role was physical, outdoors, very hands-on and gave her a chance to create something that she could stand back and appreciate. Since completing the qualification, Amba has been able to start her own small business. This has allowed her to build on the skills gained through both on and off-the-job training, including learning how to be independent and being able to quote, supply, construct and meet customer needs. Amba is interested in furthering her studies in the building construction industry and intends to use her skills and valuable knowledge learned in stonemasonry to help her obtain certification as a builder.
Mitchell said it was from talking to his father and older brother about their experiences in the industry that encouraged him to pursue his career and training pathway. He is an accomplished apprentice who displayed strong skills in his field from the outset and was a finalist in the Australian Industry Group Apprentice of the Year Award in 2013. Mitchell works to diagnose, repair and maintain the mechanical aspects of earth moving machinery, including frontend loaders, bulldozers and excavators. When things go wrong with this type of equipment it costs employers valuable time and Mitchell’s employers know they can rely on him to get things moving again quickly. He is currently undertaking Certificate III in Automotive Electrical Technology to further enhance his career opportunities.

TRAKKA PTY LTD
45 years ago Warren Simmons purchased a small Golden Fleece Service Station in Byron Bay. In 1970, he employed his first apprentice mechanic and a tradesman (who still works there today). Over the next 10 years he expanded into providing a 24 hour NRMA Road Service, Mini-Moke Hire and smash repair and was able to take on more apprentices in panel beating and spray painting. The 1980s and 1990s were decades of growth and consolidation for Simmo’s Automotive Group, with the establishment of a dedicated mechanical workshop, insurance/ admin office and the Byron Car Hire Company. The new century bought further expansion into towing and auto electrics where onsite training was encouraged, with staff completing retail and frontline management traineeships. Over 100 apprenticeships later and a continued commitment to on-going training, Simmo’s Automotive Group is now a family business.
The Telstra Licensed Shop Queanbeyan is a family owned and run business that is highly committed to its employees personal and professional development. THE MASK ACADEMY
The Australian Airline Pilot Academy (AAPA), a wholly owned subsidiary of Regional Express (Rex) was established in 2007 to battle with the severe shortage of pilots in Australia. At that time Rex’s skilled and qualified pilot workforce attrition rate was an unprecedented 50% for the 12 months. Rex decided that it must “future proof” itself and concluded that the only solution was to take responsibility for its future by training and developing its pilot workforce from the ground up. Based in Wagga Wagga, AAPA developed an innovative competency based program to train students from ab-initio stage (first flying lessons) to entry into the Rex airline as a First Officer with a Commercial Pilot Licence and Multi Engine Command Instrument Rating in 32 weeks. Nowadays AAPA has graduated more than 160 qualified airline pilots for its parent company as well as trained pilots for another international airline.

Vocation: Engineering Drafting - Certificate IV Trained by: TAFE NSW - Western Sydney Institute Employed by: Toshiba International Corporation Pty Ltd
Bree completed her HSC in 2011, studied Exercise and Sports Science at Charles Sturt University before realising it wasn’t a good fit with her career goals. She subsequently commenced an administration traineeship with Headspace and has been promoted to Youth and Community Engagement Officer with Centrecare New England in Tamworth. She is a great example of someone who has engaged in her learning and encourages youth to participate in their own health journey.
Victoria moved to Albury from Newcastle to take up a traineeship in Museum Practice, working full-time for the Albury City Council. A highly regarded member of the cultural services team at Albury City Council , Victoria was responsible for the design and implementation of the very successful ‘Floral Festival’, an exhibition to celebrate the role the festival played as a fundraiser for the wider Albury community. Trade: Engineering - Mechanical Trade Certificate III Trained by: Hunter Valley Training Company Employed by: Hunter Valley Training Company Hosted by: WDS Ltd
Trade: Electrical (Electrician) Electrotechnology Electrician Certificate III Trained by: TAFE NSW - North Coast Institute Employed by: Mackie Electric and Refrigeration Pty Ltd
Following a work experience placement with Van Der Veer Building Services, Jake was offered a Carpentry apprenticeship. Following its successful completion, he also completed a Certificate IV in Building and Construction and is currently undertaking a Diploma of Building and Construction. Jake has received a number of honours during his time as an apprentice, including the Milton Fraiser Apprentice of the Year Award and the Jim Kirkness Order of Australia Student of the Year Award in 2013. He participated in the ‘Fly and Build Program’ in Thailand and raised $2500 towards the building materials. As a Master Guide of the Pathfinder Club, Jake is actively involved in his local community. He completed his Duke of Edinburgh Bronze award and in his spare time teaches kids to water ski.
Andrew began his employment with WDS in 2010 after a past of mixed experiences and achievements. After completing his HSC, he began a Certificate II Traineeship in Agriculture, working on his family’s mixed farming and grazing property where he learned a lot about the running of a small business. Andrew managed the property while his parents were away or overseas and used this period as a working “gap year” between school and commencing a Bachelor of Engineering Mechanical. After two years of university, Andrew decided he needed hands-on practical experience in the industry and commenced an apprenticeship. In 2013 Andrew was awarded Apprentice of the Year at the Hunter Manufacturing Awards and was nominated for the NSW & ACT Group Training Awards.
As a mature aged apprentice, Mark has proven his thirst for knowledge by completing apprenticeships in Electronics and Electrical (Electrician). He is now onto his third apprenticeship in Air Conditioning/ Refrigeration. He sees the future of his work as firmly in the digital ageand recognises that many aspects of the electronics/electrical and refrigeration trades are merging. The future is automation through electronic controls. As Mark states “if it’s not connected to the internet and controllable via Wi-Fi, iPhone, Android or smartphone then it’s only a matter of time before it is”. Life is busy for Mark, he is married with two young children and if he’s not at work or studying at TAFE, he may be on duty as a retained firefighter with NSW Fire and Rescue.

Trade: Engineering - Mechanical Trade Certificate III Trained by: TAFE NSW - Illawarra Institute Employed by: C & M Leussing Engineering Pty Ltd
Trade: Automotive Mechanical Technology (Heavy Vehicle Mobile Equipment) - Certificate III Trained by: TAFE NSW - Western Institute Employed by: Whittaker Contracting Pty Ltd
Through Endeavour Energy, Jean-Pierre was provided with experience in a range of electrical settings through secondment to three electrical subcontractors and gained exposure to a broad range of work in the industry. He was one of three apprentices selected on the basis of the high quality of their work for secondment to Australian Brown Boveri, specifically to assist with the installation of gas insulated switchgear, a technology which is new to Australia. Jean-Pierre’s apprenticeship has seen him work on every part of Endeavour Energy’s network, from the distribution network that interfaces directly with homes, all the way to the highly technical environment of a state-of-the-art transmission substation. He sees trades as providing the infrastructure to support technology and higher-order services and providing a framework for built society.
While helping his grandfather restore vintage cars as a young boy, James developed an early interest in working parts. He undertook work experience with his current employer and was encouraged to apply for an apprenticeship. James excelled in his apprenticeship, competed in the TAFE World Skills competition in Turning and received other awards from TAFE. He plans to continue studying with a Certificate IV and a Diploma in the future. James mixes his love of the outdoors and work by going to Gawa, in the remote far north east of Arnhem Land. Gawa relies on a diesel driven generator and a 30 metre wind turbine to supply power to the settlement. While there, he services the equipment to ensure its operational in this extremely remote area.
After completing work experience with Whittaker Contracting, James knew that his future was in diesel mechanics. His employer was impressed with his work and offered him an apprenticeship. James came to Whittaker Contracting with minimal knowledge of heavy mobile plant equipment and their involvement in the mining industry. After three and a half years he has a high level of knowledge and is able to articulate on-the-job training to younger apprentices and fellow tradesmen. The highlight of his apprenticeship was in 2011 when he was part of a team that built nine Komatsu 230 tonne haul trucks in Mudgee. James is currently completing a qualification in road transport conversion through TAFE NSW - Western Institute.
