CONCEPT: Automotive industry (with its ups and downs), Motown music (mixed by different people and genre), and the story of life death and rebirth (that physically and culturally defines the Detroit of today) are the phenomena and unique characteristics that inspire this project. ORGANIZATION: principal circulation space is a linear canyon/gorge space, facil-

itating movement and connectivity between programmatic components: theaters, auditoriums, exhibit halls, classrooms, library, café, social and secondary support spaces PROGRESS: As a result of a series of experiments AND forming different shapes of steel, we decisively come to the conclusion that this design is PRESENTING Detroit and its history BY USING ONE

OF THE MOST VALUABLE MATERIAL IN HTE BUILDING ITSELF. in view of the fact that the steelworks as main circulation (canyon) while the program is located around it. Through the canyon, visitors will have an experience that goes at the hand of the human senses.

OUR INTENTION IS TO OPTIMIZE THE EXPERIENCE OF USERS THROUGH THE HUMAN SENSES. ARCHITECTURE IS NOT JUST A VISUAL JOURNEY. PEOPLE SMELL THROUGH THE BUILDING AND THAT COULD EXTEND THE JOY IN THE EXPERIENCE OR MAKE IT WORSE. THE TOUCHING, THE HEARING, AND OTHER SENSES MAY CHANGE OUR PERCEPTIONS OF A SPACE.

SOUND

SOUND

SILENCE

SILENCE

SOUND

SIGHT IS AN OBVIOUS ONE AND DEFINITELY THE MOST USED SENSE RELATING TO ARCHITECTURE. TO VIEW A SPACE IS TO SEE NOT ONLY THE SOLID FORMS BUT ALSO THE OPENNESS AND SPACE OF AN AREA. USING BOTH LIGHT AND STRUCTURE IN COMBINATION CAN MAKE ITS OCCUPANTS FEEL COMFORTABLE. THE MERGER OF THESE COMPONENTS CAN ALSO TAKE THE SPACE FROM JUST ORDINARY TO SOMETHING SPECIAL AND A PLACE YOU WANT TO HANG OUT IN!

ACOUSTICS OF A BUILDING, THOUGH NOT INITIALLY OBVIOUS TO US, CAN RETURN A SPACE’S MOVEMENTS AND CREATE AN ATMOSPHERE THAT WE CAN CONNECT WITH. INCREASING SOUND CAN BOOST THE INTENSITY OF A SPACE JUST LIKE A SOUND TRACK FROM A MOVIE. TO ADJUST THE IMPACT OF SOUND, WE CAN USE SOUND ABSORBERS OR SOUND OPTIMIZERS. ALSO, THE FORMS OF THE BUILDING CAN AFFECT SOUND. THE CEILING HEIGHT OR SHAPE OF THE ROOM CAN AFFECT THE ACOUSTICS. WITH A HIGH CEILING, SOUND HAS FURTHER TO TRAVEL THAN WITH A SHORTENED HEIGHT. ALSO, DIFFERENT SHAPES OF SURFACES CAN BOUNCE SOUND IN SPECIFIC DIRECTIONS TO CREATE AN INTERESTING EFFECT.

THE SENSE OF TOUCH WITHIN A BUILDING CAN CREATE A FEELING OF EITHER RELATING OR DISLIKE. THE TOUCH OF BUILDING MATERIALS ITSELF CAN CREATE THIS FEELING BUT IT‘S ALSO POSSIBLE TO FEEL A SPACE WITHOUT TOUCHING ITS COMPONENTS. YOU CAN FEEL IF A SPACE IS DIM OR BRIGHT JUST BY BEING IN IT. THE EASIEST EXAMPLE IS THE FEELING OF SUNLIGHT ON YOUR SKIN AS YOU INHABIT THE SPACE.

WIND

SMELL IS OUR SENSE THAT IS MOST CLOSELY CONNECTED TO OUR MEMORIES. THE SMELL OF DIFFERENT MATERIALS OR FRAGRANCES WE USE WITHIN A SPACE CAN BE RECORDED IN OUR MEMORY FOR A LATER TIME. CONNECTIONS TO THESE DISTINCT SMELLS CAN BE RECALLED LATER AND CAN STIMULATE VARIOUS EMOTIONS THAT WE MIGHT HAVE HAD WHILE BEING IN THE SPACE.

Phoenix is both the capital and the largest city in Arizona. Symbolically, the Capitol Mall represents the State and its aspirations; functionally, it accommodates the executive, legislative, and judicial branches of government. Because of its proximity to downtown, the Capitol Mall is poised for an inclusive revitalization and redevelopment that will establish Phoenix as a national exemplar of the 21st –century Capitol City. The Capitol Mall Centennial Plan has been developed to achieve the significant goal. Unlike many historical capitol districts, which are isolated and uninviting, the Capitol Mall, as envisioned in the Capitol

Mall Centennial Plan, features a series of sustainable connective infrastructures that make public spaces and services more accessible; enhance the efficiency

of the complex and facilitate more effective governance; and promote an identity for a world-class capitol community.

Providing filtered light into the chamber in order to connect building occupants with outdoors and reduce the use of electrical lighting.

Cool towers are natural down draft evaporative cooling devices topped with a hydro unit typically equipped with wetted pads, sprays and other cooling devices which provide cool air by gravity flow.

The hot air drafted from the surrounding areas, cooled by evapotranspiration process. In addition, the cool tower increases the evaporation process which make the air cooler and that create a cold breezeway to the Wesly Bolian Memorial Plaza.

At the daytime, the center canopy collects the solar radiation, Warm air is less dense and as such rises upward. It also provides shading to the W under the canopy to the Wesly Bolian Memorial Plaza where the warmer air flows up through the opening in the middle. 22

CIVIC DESERT CANYON VISTA|ACADEMIC PROJECT|2018

The geometry of the central canopy design to collect rainwater. It has cones that collect rainwater into downspouts where people can see the rainwater through it and then into some sort of underground storage vessel. This water is used for the surrounding landscape as well as for certain indoor amenities in the additional space and the cool tower. In the whole project, we collect 2.5 m gallons per year and we have 6 tanks in the underground.

We studied the profile angle of the site at noon solar time and we design the canopy to provide shading for the people who are around the memorial and create a microclimate that improves the outdoor human thermal comfort. Our canopy has adaptive solar panels which follow the sun to get the most efficient renewable energy.

• Capitol mall complex consumes: 3,850,000 kwh/year, and new extension consumes: 17,210,000 kwh/year • solar energy produced by PV panels: 22,640,000 kwh/year • Total production - concussion: 1,580,000 kwh/year to the city

Wesly Bolian Memorial Plaza. In contrast, at night time, the heat absorbed by a canopy shading released to the sky. Cold air is denser so it falls

Evaporative cooling is a physical phenomenon in which evaporation of a liquid, typically into surrounding air, cools an object or a liquid in contact with it. Latent heat describes the amount of heat that is needed to evaporate the liquid; this heat comes from the liquid itself and the surrounding gas and surfaces. When considering water evaporating into air, the wet bulb temperature, as compared to the air’s dry bulb

24

temperature is a measure of the potential for evaporative cooling. The greater the difference between the two temperatures, also called the “wet bulb depression”, the greater the evaporative cooling effect. When the temperatures are the same, no net evaporation of water in air occurs, thus there is no cooling effect. Therefore evaporative cooling technology is more efficient in dry climates than in humid regions.

Water is fed into a feed pipe that runs into the hydro unit. The punctured PVC sprays water onto the top of the gutter splashing it back down towards the pads. Once the water has run down the pads, it will drain through the runoff pipe into the water catheter. There it will gather and eventually escape into the landscape through another runoff pipe.

The water catcher below the discharge area helped improve the evaporative cooling of the system which aided in the decrease of temperature in the area which was felt by every- one in the vicinity.

The cool tower helped to enhance the outdoor human thermal comfort in the underwood garden.

The design is rooted giving the users the opportunity to see the project through varying vertical and horizontal perspectives. A dynamic movement between the spaces; plazas in layered at different levels, each with a different use. The building addresses the harsh desert climate of Tucson by locating most of the building underground, while also naturally ventilating the spaces and providing daylight in

every level. Contextually, the design respects the Tucson Transfer and Warehouse Building by lowering the profile and maintaining the visual connection through the site. The dynamic shape of the building translates the idea of the active movement, related to the program uses, and responds to the environmental by optimizing passive cooling strategies. The shape direct prevailing winds to flow inside the

plaza and self shade. Rainwater is collected from the sloping roofs and harvesting from the site and re-distributed it trees via a waterfall that moves through the plazas. Additionally, the geometry and orientation of the roof makes it possible use solar panels on the roof. Furthermore, the different levels place the spaces inside so they can be optimally suited to program.

I rose my building to create an infinitive view, which means that there are no view borders or boundaries. Besides that, there are some tunnels around the site that inspired me to think about an attractive environmen-

tal space underneath the site. my building skin can be interpreted either as intelligent environmental screens or as public communication interfaces which related to the art. My design interact be-

tween environment and interior, the architectural facade, in search of a latent aesthetic enabled by kinetics.

This course provides a comprehensive introduction to advanced digital technologies in architecture with a specific focus on parametric modeling for design applications. My case study was the Phare Tower in Paris. This tower has designed to be oriented respond to the path of the sun. You can clearly see that when in the skin of the tower that covers some specific façades. In Phare Tower, the skin covered the west, south, and east façades which makes me study the sun as an attraction point which the skin panels follow. By using Grasshopper, I tried to study the orientation of the skin panels in the morning, at noon, and in the evening which gives me the different result of the orientations. In Digital Fabrication part, I tried to make an abstract

idea about my case study, the Phare Tower. I used a shelter which reflects the concept of the tower, and the concrete reflects the environment around. You can see clearly that the shelter I used designed in a parametric way, and the levelling in the shelter describe the highest of the tower. What makes me use the parametric design is the fact that the skin of the tower was designed to be related to the sun in a complicated way which is the same idea that the shelter provides.

The enjoyment of the interior spaces of this house was the central motive around which the project revolves, based on this idea proposed to the owners, the house was designed in such a way that the exterior gesture was powerful and that the subtlety of the environments interiors will help to have particular experiences for each space of use. The project was designed to meet the space and growth needs of a family of 6 people, where the future requirements for the children in the following years would have to be considered. Through a composition of very forceful elements that dialogue with each

52

other with their respective materials, the house develops on two levels, the lower level being partially closed in front of the lot and translucent to the rear

garden; while the upper floor has some inconspicuous visual escapes, for the most part they enjoy the interior.

It is one of the biggest projects in the area of it is kind, the owner wanted something make difference in AlBukairiah city. It should offer several options for the customer. We try to make some new treatments and add some items to the elevations in this project. We made two concepts for the villas with 500m2, each design had different program. On design stage these climates should be carefully considered in the design to avoid the excess thermal load and bad ventilation and to accommodate the most adequate indoor work environment for the occupants and most important is to reduce the power consumption. The natural appeal, versatility and strength of

56

wood makes it the superior choice for external cladding. Through specification, planning, design and finishing processes, wood cladding not only

creates a building of superior strength, acoustic and thermal performance but also creates a place of beauty, style and natural appeal.

White can help smaller spaces appear large. It can also make rooms look livelier, fresher and crisper. In this house, we tried to design it as an open space plan which is somthing not common in Saudi Arabia. Also, we tried to encorage the connection between the indoor and out door spaces. 58

The Hail House is located on a farm in the countryside close to the city Hail, in Saudi Arabia. From the get-go, the slop of the land imposed the challenge of creating private spaces and, to some degree, protected visually and climatically. The solution adopted, from the outset, was a one-level house which, on one side looked out to the waters

features and farm; and, on the other, to an internal patio demarcated by stone walls, which end up defining all of the spaces of the house. Houses do not move. They are made of heavy materials, put together with mortar, concrete and stone must be used. These prejudices are hard to break, as the immobility of constructions.
